Hey hockey pucks! How come I haven't seen any of you up here in Canada?
Sounds like the band's border crossing was full of adventure at the crack of dawn this morning. We came a day early and it is hot as hell here.
Did someone say photos?

BTW, it is hard for me to believe this is now a shirt that is over 20 years old from my last GD show ever in CA (5/5/90 - the day of the Kentucky Derby and they played THE RACE IS ON)....
setlist please
Looks like a good time.
If you're going to take shots at the show please try to show us the venue and crowd, not just the boys with their toys.
Thank you.
OK; will try! The venue looks to be right out on the Ottawa River.
>>(5/5/90 - the day of the Kentucky Derby and they played THE RACE IS ON)....
if you were at that show, the heat in Canada can't be as bad.
my border crossing did not go so easily back in 92 for the copps shows
have a great time
can't wait for this weekend
You guys have fun, I'm headed out later today for AllGood! You may see us, I think my buddy will be painted Green on Friday night for Phil and the boys.

Well, why suggest doubt I was there? Look at the shirt. The show was in Carson at Cal State Dominquez Hills. It was the 1984 Olympic venue for cycling and and some early round soccer too (as I recall). In any case, it was hot that day for sure, but this is 20 years later now and the immediate heat seems a whole lot more bothersome. The one Dead show that I do vividly recall as being truly incredibly hot was Dillon Stadium 7/16/72 and not just because Betts and Berry jammed on the last several songs on the second set. I think it was 104 that day!
Say Zone Deaf, looks like a good time in Canada's capital. Can you help me out? I'm trying to post a couple pix for the first time. I get as far as the "your image here" but can't upload the pix. I'm technically inept. You seem to have solved the problem.
have a great time in the great white north zoners!!!
Hi Folks! First post... Waiting to leave for the show tonight, and getting pretty antsy. Old Dead Head, New(ish) resident of Ottawa. Pretty Ain't it? ZoneDeaf, if you're still around? At the set break, take your lovely wife and your camera back by the Subway Stage. The river at sunset there is beautiful. Enjoy Ottawa!
Long time Philzone member that hasn't post in ages, just wanted to say what a great thrill it is to see a thread for a show in my hometown! I'm used to travelling to see the boys so this is going to be a memorable night. Have fun everyone!!
It gets hot in Canada? Who knew?
>>>I get as far as the "your image here" but can't upload the pix<<<
Once you get that icon actually send your post and you'll get the deal for uploading.
If you're alreaady doing that and still can't get it to go then you probably have to re-size your image to less than 500 pxls or whatever they're called.
WE WANT PHOTO'S!!!
what time does the show start?
Is this a two set show????
The pictures are nice and all, but I've got to scroll past all of them to get to the actual review. How about you post your personal photos somewhere else, like, I don't know, under photos? No offense intended, I hope you have a great time.
Really trying to make this work.
i hate cranky people, hey Claude just press the "end" button on your keyboard to skip all the stuff you dont like in order to get to the bottom post with the most current info. it's not hard.
i'd rather see pictures of beautiful scenery relative to the show than read your complaints, so there!
Good point, Knight. Or at least keep them show specific.
Show starts at 8:00 according to festival website
Apologies for posting the terrapin there. Just finally got my first photo to work. I'll try hard to do it again after tomorrow's show under Artpark.
no worries, jane. shoot us the setlist when it starts.
Thank, VA Jim. I'm not cranky, well maybe a little, it's freakin' HOT, but really . . .
I don't necessarily want to skip to the end, I'm not checking every 5 minutes, but thanks for the tip anyway, Wavydavy. And really I meant no offense, it just seems like the wrong place to post pictures of buildings and your wife. I truly don't want to bum anyone out.
Claude, its all good, i should have minded my own bees wax anyway, lets have a good show tonight!!
Can't wait for Philly shows!!
All songs will be themed to difficulties encountered crossing border. A single set show of 2,5 hours supposedly. Began at 8:30. So far.....

I heard through the grapevine, when the band was crossing the border everything was tossed and searched. Then they took Bobby on the side and he had to explain his wardrobe to them. I also heard they confiscated his "sweat pants/ pajamas"

In '84 he got hassled over a bag of bee pollen that they thought was some sort of drug, might have been that.
Gotta say, not my set list so far. Glad to see a lot of things I won't want to hear in Philly getting played.

They have what? A half hour left?
Why didn't they fly into Ottawa? Much easier way to cross the border.
The challenge wil be driving back into the good old US of A, but its a good thing they have a White House connection.
>jam>Help On The Way>
Flying equipment would add to many $$$ to overhead, but why they don't fly in is kinda odd
I think they will play at least 2+ hours (2.5 is what I heard) straight, according to a source.

there's that smokestack i've been waiting for. I heard somewhere they were going to bust that out. I love this setlist. I've been waiting for some cowboy songs like Mama tried. I was hoping we might get that into big river on saturday. oh well. Miracle is always good. Hope they bust out some unplayed songs in Philly.
This just made the night and the trip worth it!!!!
yo
You think they can do 2 1/2 hours straight? At their age? I don't know about that.

Yes I also caught the Coney Caution. Coney's was a little snappy vs tonight. This one was a longer intro I think. This setlist though is unique due to the time they have to play. Also small crowd for a festival. Some heads here but many who have no idea who these guys are too.

Goodnight all. Thanks for the coverage. Be safe getting to Buffalo. Talk to you tomorrow.
This is my first post since last year and yes this is indeed a great (long) set. It opens up alot of doors for tomorrow though. My early call(s) for tomorrow include (but not limited to)a Dew, possible Stephen and who knows what else. Maybe even a Cosmic!! Looking forward to this one. See ya in Lewiston.
According to what I picked up, I FOUGHT THE LAW was Phil's idea and it was unrehearsed. Not a bad rendition for some in the group that only knew The Clash version. Also, the official setlist was for a single song encore and TOUCH was a late addition. One super long set due to the terms of the Festival time table (an 8PM start, which became almost 8:30 and an 11PM end, which was actually 10:55). I'll post some photos for those that care.
First some more local color from touring around town today on another scorcher......

Wow interesting list. Thanks for the photos to the dude with his chick who went to 5.5.90...I have sick snbds of that show. I like that you posted them. Hope your show was great! I'm off to Philly this weekend and am interested in feedback on the Casey and those who saw the last estimated and dancing s....
Good Morning all,
First off...it was hot out there in at the fest, but its a pretty cool spot and there's lots of great performners coming through there. There wasn't much of a crowd for until just before the show, but there were alot of people there by the end. We stood right up front and had lots of space.
As far as the show goes, I have to say that i was really impressed and the absolute highlight for me was the Jam that went into Help on the Way...had this realliy cool funky shakedown thing going. Loved Wharf Rat aswell.
There was good energy flowing through the music and Phil really stood out in ways I havent seen before. Bobby still looks a little lost, but he was really fine form vocally. If I were reviewing the setlist, I would have been happy that that i missed alot of those tunes, but they were all played so well and each one had some great moments.
The show started off in a relatively structured way and then got spaceier as the night progressed. There is very little to complain about and hope all have a great time tonite at Art Park!
Was at the tour opener in Rochester and drove up from Montreal for the show last night. Much different crowd in Ottawa than in Rochester as many of the tour-rats probably made a wise decision to not cross the border. So that left Furthur probably playing to a majority "non-Dead" and straighter crowd than usual, with a minority of heads able to enjoy the show from as close to the stage as they wanted (if they could handle that hot hot sun pouring in).
And my thoughts are that Furthur delivered the goods again. I don't think the setlist will catch many many eyes compared to others on this tour, but the playing was top-notch throughout. Alabama Getaway, not my favourite, but John K rock n'rolled and killed it (in a good way). And I don't know if the band has ever played faster than the rave-up at the end of Casey Jones, but that drummer just kept upping the tempo on each repeated chorus until it reached a crazy, crazy level/pitch. The crowd really appreciated that. Again Casey Jones can seem a bit trite for some, but this version did smoke.
And last but not least was Phil. He was LOUD (admittedly I was at the stage and then only as far back as twelve rows but he must have been loud from wherever). And he was AWESOME. Particulalrly on the Help on the Way funky jam and then he had alot of room to lead the jam in Caution. INCREDIBLE. He was having such a good time, and he ripped it. If you love loud Phil, and wanna hear him being give some room, well listen to the Help/Slip/Caution. I hope the sound is well picked up on the tapes.
Whole show was awesome. Thanks Furthur.
thanks for the updates!
Um, I detected no SLIPKNOT between Help and Caution. I'd like to hear the show, but I believe you are mistaken.
yeah it probably was just Help/Caution. that's what you get for writing fast when you are at work. just wanted to pass along the message that Phil (and the whole band) was awesome throughout, and particularly at that point in the show.
I do believe that Joe Russo and John K are pushing Phil and Bob to play hard, and that the seasoned vets are up for the challenge. I don't think Bob is really that "lost" on any tune. He flubbed a few lyrics (once at least to his own great amusement and laughter) but his rhythm was loud and clear throughout and, as someone else wrote, he was great on his usual vocal rave-ups.
Way to go Blackie, we really appreciate all this!
Hay Streicher
Totally agree with everything you wrote about the show!!! I was there, but didn't see you anywhere. I was centre stage, just right of the security barrier, about 10 rows back. Unfortunately this is my last Furthur show for a little while, until they announce some more dates closeby. It was a treat to see them and not cross the border.
Maybe we can catch a show together sometime.
Been a long time since the last time I saw you, playing cards at George's. Hope all is well, take care buddy!

ok JackStraw, let's catch a show next tour on the East Coast. Last night, I was right up in front to the right for a bit when the show started (in front of John K). But I moved back to the seats (yep I was a sucker who had bought expensive reserved seat tix) after a few songs cause I was with an older concert-goer who couldn't stay standing through the heat. take care and keep listening!
Zone-Deaf-thanks for posting the pixs from Canada, eh? (had to add that in) set list, too......hope yall had fun-sounds like it ))
ps-the "monument" looks like a Native American totem pole
Hey JackStraw! I was in the same area so we would have been really close to each other.
Just wanted to add my two cents. I felt like they really took the "blues" in the festival's title seriously as they kept it pretty grounded for the most part. I would have liked to hear more spacey jams myself, but given the context (lots of not so familiar people) I understand their choices.
I'm living in Montreal these days and though I've been to Ottawa quite a few times this was my first time to the Blues Fest. I got there at 7:40, later than I had planned, but happily strolled up to right by the stage without a problem; there was lots of space to move thankfully. Unfortunately they had a corridor blocked off from the sound booth to the stage so the two halves were divided thus reducing the ability to communicate with people on the other side or go back and forth. Security was really lax (I walked in without even a pat down) with lots of people smoking pretty freely although I did see two security guys going through the crowd who did give one guy shit for a joint that he had dropped when he saw them. I chatted with a number of people before the show started who either had never seen the Boys in the Dead or any group since or hadn't been able to in years because of problems going to the USA who were really happy they were there so there was a lot of positive energy. I was expecting a two set show, though, so I was a little bummed out when one of them assured me that the festival only ever had single sets. As it turned out it didn't matter as they played a LONG set.
Alabama was a surprise opener - not one I was expecting although very appropriate given the aforementioned context. Very well jammed out all in all though very much “inside” the song; the same as well for Don’t Ease, Mama, Dire, Hell and Bertha. The jam out of Truckin’ was where things started to get interesting with Smokestack a total surprise when the main riff came through. The CJ (not my favorite song personally, but…) was, as others have said, good with an hell of a speed build-up at the end. By this point I was honestly getting tired of the shorter songs so INAM, though good, was a bit of a disappointment but well played. They really began to stretch things in the jam out with some really great moments. HOTW was (obviously!) a great surprise although I would have loved a really jammy Slipknot>Franklin’s to which (again, my opinion) Caution just couldn’t compare. The New Speedway was, again, fitting for the context but again a nice surprise. (And “One way or another/This darkness has got to give” seems so appropriate these days given the state of the world, but that’s another story...). Wharf Rat was a delight. A great jam into it and really well played. I Fought the Law was a total surprise. I know the Dead did it once or twice in the 80s (I think), but not at all what I was expecting. Someone mentioned up thread that it was Phil’s last minute (second?) call and it showed as it was pretty loose. Good for them to have tried it though. Then Liberty - a great latter-day Jerry tune IMHO and one I’ve enjoyed hearing Bob sing over the years. Very fun. OTRA was honestly a big let down since I really only expected them to do one tune for the encore. It’s a fun song and worked great in ’80 acoustic sets, but there were so many others I would have rather heard. To say the least, I was very happy when they went into Touch of Grey!
All in all, a very fun show. Met some great people, danced beside this beautiful tall girl in a green dress who (I don’t think I was imagining this!) was giving me smiles the whole show (although she was seemingly with a guy so I didn’t do anything! but if you happen to be reading this…. ), and very much enjoyed the mellowness of the festival compared to shows Stateside. I prefer the spacey-jammy side of them myself, but given the undoubted unfamiliarity of most of those there I understand them wanting to save those for a more expectant audience. And I’m going to both nights in Philly so we'll hopefully get that there!
Peace
Incornsyucopia
although I would have loved a really jammy Slipknot>Franklin’s to which (again, my opinion) Caution just couldn’t compare
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
FWIW, I'd wager a Beau's Lug-Tread Lager (bring one, or better yet a sixer, to Philly when you lose this bet) that on this you were in the minority.
wow! what a show. gotta say THIS is exactly the sort of setlist i love. reminds me of the great late 80's shows. man wish those days were here again! listening on archive and it sounds great!
The festival's poster...
Try to find FURTHUR on here....it is the start of the third line, which on this photo is probably too small to make it out.
