Fucking A! These guys were great. As was the venue and the whole experience. 1st, I drove to Black Mtn from Hendersonville via Highway 9. Moutain road straight through the moutains. Desolate shit. Someplace I could easily see myself living.
The venue, Pisgah Brewery was outside Black Mtn and had a Industrial/wharehouse feel but in a good way. A laid back western NC way. Out in the sticks. The cover was 5 bucks and the room was almost like a large garage w/ one side completely open so you could dip out for a smoke or whatever and hear/see the music perfectly. There were maybe a hundred people there.
Apparently, they have great beer but I didn't imbide going w/ a root beer instead. Anyway, I walked in as the band started w/ a improv and I ponied up to a corner seat at the bar. Dead center probably 10 feet from the band.
The Music was primarily material from the new album but they did stetch some of it and do some improv stuff. I was particularly interested in Skerik's keyboard playing. Had a Marco benevento feel. Maybe they've been in discussion about it.
Anyway, some 'standard' jazz type stuff and then some real agressive/funky/ avante garde (?lol) stuff. Very Unique. It's worth noting Brad Houser held it down on bass/baritone/lowend. Just solid, in the pocket. Nothing flashy although he clearly had chops.
Also, Seeing Mike Dillon on drums was cool. So use to seeing him solely on vibes. He rocked it when need be on kit.
Skerik is just a cat I've always loved. That guy can play and he's always been cool as hell to me. Big fan. All the effects on the sax at times could make it sound like a guitar...just all the different sounds that guy can make w/ that gear and his overall skills on sax is just mind blowing. Helluva show! Helluva venue! Cool/chill crowd!
Oh yeah, the 'soundboard' and maybe one of the room if i can clean it up
'soundboard' & somebody taped!
more band...
Wow!
Looks like a nice show. Cool photos and a nice review.
Please post a link to a recording if you find it.
Thanks.
