Can't believe i'm saying this but I'm looking for Corrina after the 1 in Philly...and a Cream Puff War- Ruben and Cherise..and the elusive Stagger Lee
what's the shakedown like in times square, don't go to many of the city shows, whadda all the groupies do without any lots, eh?
There is no Shakedown Street at Manhattan shows. There might be a couple people in various parking lots or decks and a few people with a poster or two outside the show, but no Shakedown Street.
i assume i'll find some 'goods shaking down in the theatre if i bop around a little bit before the show starts eh
there is a 2 shakedown, least when iwent to phil @ nokia nov. 07, there was a large huddled mass of a shakedown right in front of the venue. freakin sardine can shakedown right out in the open just stay in the middle. haha
Ive seen Shakedowns in NYC...check the street level parking lots on the west side

Does anyone know what time you need to turn up at the Nokia to get through security and ticket check and still get in the theater when doors open? I do not want to be in the front rows at the stage but I do not wish to be at the back either. I would like to have a chance to look around, have a few beers and mingle before the show starts. Doors open at 7, show at 8.
My experience was that 6.15 was good in 2007 and 2008 - though these shows may be more pressured
Dropped by Nokia box office on Friday and was told shows are completely sold out
Be careful & have Fun !
Hey now everyone. Big show tonight in midtown Manhattan. Whew!!!!

No worse. Bobby gave up on the song. He sung first verse of El Paso twice i think with sbout a 5 minute jam on between while he tried remembering the words. I have never seen anything like this. I feel bad for Bobby.

The Tao of Bobby
shit...i cant remember the lyrics to el paso either, no sweatbrother bobby....just let the band rock till you feel right....critics will be critics, just keep on playin in the band
"...out of the west texas town of hells' asshole..."
Actually, I'm ditching too, Rob. It's 3:44am here. time for bed for me. nite all. Travel safe, Rob.
Intoashes: Bobby is amazing, but part of his amazingness is his incredibly high cheese factor and his complete and utter lack of judgment at times. You have to take the good with the bad, the Jack Straws and Estimateds with the Easy Answers and the Corrinas, as it were. Such is the Tao of Weir.
Well put, Imagine. He is a character to be sure.
Yes, The Tao of Weir
i would sorely miss him if he were to cease this "job" enjoy this encore friends....
Tao of Weir is one thing, but that was a sad sight. He could barely stand up and did not know where he was. People scrambling back stage, Jill chewing someone out. Bobby is wasted or sick and it aint pretty tonight. Still wouldn't be anywhere else though!
As would I. It was funny how different Jerry and Bobby's personalities were. I think Bobby cracked Jerry up onstage alot of times. Yet, they really complimented each other.
There's the man himself, Jim. He gets all the credit.
any comment on the theater? bit of a different venue. underground, neon...im heading tomorrow, been there once, experience was....odd...but that may have been my fault. is it jammed, hot? comfortable?
lets face it, Bobby is awesome. Did he really sing the BEWomen?! I thought that was a John tune(w/the phil "old man's gettin' on.."). If so, perhaps that is what messed him up. Or not. It really doesn't matter. I thought I would be bummed about him singing the Cream PUff War but after hearing that new potatoe>cream puff from the sbd of herkimer castle, I am again reminded of how willing he is, nowadays, to keep it real. I am afraid of my new theory, though, that Bobby will be singing the Stagger Lee. Maybe that is why they bailed on it in Philly, Bob wasn't ready to sing it yet. Oh well, I hope not. I hope John sings it, when they do eventually play it. But I know it will be killer if Bobby sings it too. It doesn't matter, now that John is ripping it up on guitar, it keeps the cheese in check, at the end of the day.
i think i would call a lost sailor and let him find his vibe again....lost saint and rock-n-roll from there, cant wait till tomorrow
love the tao of bobby
rock on man!
is he wearing capri pants agian?
band's on stage
I'm back up.
let's hear it!
Saw the shows in Philly. Going there I was hoping for more JK based on what I had heard of previous shows. In Phila, however, I thought Bobby was a pleasant surprise as far as how with the program Lost>Saint etc was. Bobby helped to make those shows special for me. Obviously he's capable of carrying that torch as far as anyone. I hope he continues to bring the light he brought to Philly.

lol - wooks & hooks in Times Square is nothing special to the boys being in town!! Was the naked cowboy there also? Damn, work and twins keeping me home during these shows right in NJ!!
How did Bobby fare near the end of the show? Was he OK?
Diagnosis on Bobby please....
The rest of the band did great!

last nourider w/o china cat was when?
That was a disaster. Bobby looked disoriented the whole show. He struggled and mumbled lyrics. Many miscues. The end of good lovin would have been considered a mess if not for el paso setting the bar. I was more concerned that he was having a serious medical issue than about the quality of music after a while. Truly the most disconcerting performance I've seen by a band member since 95. Let's see what tomorrow will bring.

Yes Bobby wore the Yogi pants. John looked like someone in a simple black T-Shirt- and delivered the goods on Stella. Wow.
The real story is that Bobby was really in another world- Lost lyrics on Brown Eyed Women- completely lost El Paso twice- and even flubbed CassiDy lines. He seemed ok towards the end- touching moment when Phil went up to him after the encore and gave him a kiss on the cheek and a hug- They didnt do the normal group bow I've seen them do.
chopper 5 star special..Weir was lost..
stoned? drunk? senile? Phil gave Bobby a hug at the end....as if to say...You made it..
Totally Bizarre night w Bobby
maybe he was dosed?
Solid "B" grade show.
I am an emphatic phan btw.
Poor, poor Bobby. I felt so bad for him just standing there helplessly, utterly unable to remeber any of the words to El Paso. He made a couple faints towards the microphone but would then back away when he realized he didn't have a clue what to sing. He just seemed despondent. Was it because he couldn't come up with the words or was the forgetting a symptom of something else that was wrong?
I hope it was just a brain fart or a touch of jet lag or something. But it had more of the vibe of "his dog died" or "his wife just told him she wanted a divorce and she was taking the kids." I'm not even theorizing...just trying to relate how it felt.
The energy never really recovered during the first set. Good transitions between the Miracle>Bertha>G. Lovin.'
2nd set much better. Howling feedback jams between verses of Bartering Lines. Pretty tight St. Stephen>Born Cross Eyed.
I was pretty close. Bobby still seemed down. Also, even when he wasn't completely forgetting the words his voice sounded weak. He was really looking down a lot the whole show (with his eyes). Hanging his head.
Everyone has their own experiences at a show, but I sensed a lot of aggression and bad vibes. I encountered a lot of drunkenness, elbows, posessiveness about personal space on the floor. There were a couple security altercations. Stark contrast to the mellow vibe of the many Phil shows I've been to at the Nokia over the last couple years.
Anyway, tomorrow is another day and I can't wait. Best wishes for healing to Bobby. I'm rooting for him.
Sweet venue. The sound at the Nokia is pristine. You can hear every instrument separately and cleanly.
A case could be made that this was a rehearsal show in prep for the Vibes this weekend. Just like the Mill Valley and San Rafael rehearsal shows there were highlights and then, well, not so much.
After a huge and funky Shakedown that was perfect the wheels starting coming off for Weir during Brown Eyed Women. I thought that's "ok" since really it should be a JK/Phil song and not a core Bobby song. That said, I think the forgotten Browneyed lyrics really got Bob flummoxed and threw him off his game. Do you know the movie Tin Cup where Kevin Costner keeps hitting the golf ball over and over into the water? That was El Paso. Flat out the El Paso Weir space was by far the biggest lyrical trainwreck I have seen at any concert - ever. Weir got the first verse right, played the whole song without singing, then proceeded to tell the audience he was going to start over, got the first verse right again and then...spaced the rest of the song - again. Phil finally put Bob out of our misery and gave JK the nod to rip a nice Dire Wolf. Fatherly pat on the shoulder to Bob from Phil after the Dire Wolf to make sure all was ok.
I really liked everything from that point on. The Row Jimmy was sweet. Miracle>Bertha>Good Lovin was fun. Music Never solid. All The Colors sounds promising. Cassidy a bit shaky on lyrics, jam worked nicely. JK turned in a much needed allstar performance on Cold, Rain & Snow - really rocking. Stephen>Caution>Stella>Rider worked very well. JK really showed me something on Stella Blue. I agree that he "brought it" with excellent singing and beautiful leads. Those ballads late in set 2 are such an important part of the GD experience, great to see them placed correctly in the set.
Despite the Weir trainwreck during Set 1 I am still a huge fan of this band. JK, Russo, Chimenti and the background singers just get better and better. For me Chimenti was a standout tonight - mostly because you could hear him so much better with the great sound system.
And yes, quite the surreal scene on the outskirts of Times Square with Wooks and Hooks intermingling. Good times.
I just finished uploading my iphone video of tonight's Cold, Rain & Snow. Enjoy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9uo_uWijFA
Was it a possible telepromter issue? I'm there tomorrow, by the way what are wooks?
anyone have deja vu of the January 1987 El Paso at the S.F. Civic Center?
perhaps they were doing a reprise of that version, which previously was the worst trainwreck ever performed by a Grateful Dead band.
1st set: Disaster. Train wreck. Meltdown.
2nd set: Nice comeback.
Weir looked completely out of it the whole first set. He was looking at his guitar like he'd never held one before. He was terrible on B.E.W., and then sang two lines (TWO LINES!) of El Paso. There was a teleprompter right there, it either wasn't working or there was another problem not technical in nature. It was brutal. I was worried the guy was having mini-strokes. I was convinced he was going to go down, right there on stage. That bad. I have never seen anything like it on any stage in 30+ years of concert-going. Two JK songs in a row spared us from more pain, but Bobby was in a daze at this point. He was ok for Miracle and for most of Good Lovin', but he extended it too long and got himself and everybody else lost before ending the set.
Then came the second set, which was much, much better, with some real highlights. Bobby still looked at little shaky, but his playing and singing were both stronger in the second set. They would have to be, because he could not have put on a poorer show than that first set. The St Stephen was first rate, as was Stella and Rider.
Uncle John's Band encore was also strong.
Let's hope Bobby is feeling better tomorrow, and that this is not a sign of things to come.
what are wooks?
lol
Weir really did look out of it. I was up front. After the El Paso issues, Phil asked him if he was OK and Bob shook his head yes. Weir only smiled once - near the very end. And the Phil - Bobby hug at the end kinda said it all.
what a total meltdown by Bobby last night
i was thinking to myself was this the same bobby
i saw just 2 weeks ago in philly
he looked completely disoriented- i mean drunk or stoned off his ass
be women was a complete shit show followed by
an almost instrumental el paso
this show as a total dissapointment for myself
thank god for John and Phil
the sound was way to low and Bobby was absent the entire show
anyone who knows the music and has seen further
knew there was major issues
they owe us a loud insane show tonight
i was really worried Bobby needed medical attention it was that bad
bizarre evening to say the least
bobby better rest up and have his shit together
tonight
I don't know about 'owing us a loud insane show'...I just hope Bobby is OK (both medically and mentally).
ok here we go...as everyone knows im a huge fan of this band...was really looking forward to this....had the wife beautiful day people everywhere...started off good...now this is for all the critics who tell me im not critical when i should be....i seriously dont even think weir jnew where he was...ike above post he was totally and completely lost the entire show...thank god for john...he saved the night and was completely wailing...im convinced theyturned down weirs guitar because he was so out of it he couldnt play...he kept shaking his head like he was trying to wake up.....phil finally and mercifully walked over to him during el trasho and basically in my opinion asked him what the fuck was going on...he a had a dzae to him and looked drunk to me...then phil waliked up to the mic and probably through the headsets told john he was the last hope and to take over...and he did...thak god...i actually thought they were going to stop playing at one point and call it a night...el paso wasnt even a trainwreck...it was downright hands down the worst one ever...then weir knowing he was totally out of it kept changing guitars...i counted 3x during one song and then he fell down and couldnt get up while he knelt down to fuck with hs amp he fell over....it was painful to watch...he couldnt play guitar either...he looked like he hadnt slept and then got hammered...his hair was all in disarray and he really did look like he was totally lost...bad....but john saved the day...they took a long break and im sure puped 6 cups of coffee into him which appeared to help a little...still loved the band and the show but i felt bad for both...i swear he probably doesnt remember last nights set list if you asked him today...hopefully hes not sick and in the hospital and somebody is watching him today...i wouldnt be surprised if they cancel tonight....it was that worrisome......still a good time but just the absolute worst of bob ive seen in 31 years....i hope he is ok...
Davino - had same q... from urban dictionary:
Wook - noun or adjective. a dirty, hairy, stinky, mal-nourished, dishonest creature that often travels in packs, with possibly and unfortunately, mangy, multi-colored dogs on hand-made all natural, organic hemp leashes, or alone wandering aimlessly around a concert (usually "hippie music") parking lot with a few seemingly more important than the music goals; find as many mind altering substances and cram them into their bodies as fast and furiously as possible, get into the show somehow, don't lose the dog this time, and if by chance they come across unattended property such as a cooler, chair, backpack, or a beverage, it will then become their own. also once inside the show and the music begins, even if it sucks, a true wook will never be able to tell the difference because once the substances take effect, many of them can actually be seen dancing and "gooving" to music that only they can hear. wooks are only useful in one way: if you are trying to warn or scare a younger more easily influenced friend about the dangers of drugs, just tell them to observe and study the behaviors of wooks in their natural surroundings, but warn them that if they get too close, they may risk becoming one themselves!
"A case could be made that this was a rehearsal show in prep for the Vibes this weekend."
Uh, no it can't. When you're charging folks for admission at a show, especially in NYC, you can't come out and play like it's a practice session. Many folks went through a lot to get to these shows, which have been highly anticipated. I have no idea what Bob's problem was and I'm sure it will be better tonight, but you don't charge top dollar in NYC for a rehearsal session (and I'm sure they didn't intend to, just one of those nights).
"Wooks and Hooks"
Good one.
"maybe he was dosed?"
That was my first thought.
he even messed up music never stopped...painful....hard to watch....contemplating not going tonight.....if it wasnt total jet lag follwed by all afternoon at mcsorleys hes shot and finished....im expecting an apology somewhere along the lines or even at the show tonight from someone in the band....he couldnt play his guitar at some points...and he kept hitting himself in the head like saying to himself wake up or snap out of it....i personally would have unplugged him and went with john jgb style ...he did appear though to somewhat wake up a little in the second set...if he had to walk 5 blocks he would not have made it....he couldnt even stand up...he was swaying the whole time
I really love Bobby...and let's pray he is OK...one and all. BTW Thanks Brian Lukow for that post about Phil hugging Bobby...Meant a lot to know that!
Well the show is well documented thus far. I sensed something was off as soon as they took the stage because Bob was like 4 minutes behind everyone else getting on stage. He looked like he was tripping. But I think he was doped up. Likely drunk as well. Shakedown was decent then Bob started to lose his cool a bit and during el paso I saw Phil throw his hands up and say "i give up'...Phil was upset, concerned, embarrassed, depressed etc...not a cool moment in GD history. I seriously thought they were making calls to Trey- who could step in here if need be-or someone else. I have never even seen Jerry this fucked up. Despondent dark eyes, like a doll's eye...no life in it (okay I will complete the Jaws line.."until he comes up and bites ya, and those eyes roll over...")seriously though, no life in his eyes and when I saw them start Miracle, I figured Bob was getting better and he was. But the vibe was off for the night-it was thrown off..some bad energy grew and as was pointed out, the floor was a territorial place. It seemed like one of those days where Bob was out with some friends all day and showed up 15 minutes before the show fucked up. I need a ticket for tonight...the second set was very pleasing and the band seemed to want to make up for the earlier disaster by ripping off a nice second set and they did. Cold rain, stephen, rider, uncle Johns encore...cassidy in there- good jams nice times. Bob should be better today. At one point my brother turned to me asking if Bob had parkensans or alzheimers...but two weeks ago he was fine. Bob just got too wasted- end of story. Still a cdecent show. The few drunk asses and shouters on the floor were worse than Bobs issues.
set 1 here> http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/8584447
just want to say thanks for the reviews and incite. I was not at the show, i couldnt make, but i did the whole summer type tour thing. YOu know i have always checked fact, rumoura, and reviews with the ratdog board, and i have to say that peopole who post here are alot more considerate, understanding and more in touch, i feel, than those over in ratdog board. people here made mention of a shitty bob weir last nite and they didnt jump immediately to drugs or alcohol, and condone him. i felt the ratdog board is kinda doing that and has done it before this isn't a dick competition . Is it because a bunch of youngsters post there and are thickheaded and cant see behind the lines or what.. Such judgement ive read from ovrer there WTF.. Ive seen a shit ton and i mean a shit ton of phil and ratdog, both are completely different music enjoy it bitches. any way im kinda young my self (30) and im just grateful to keep seeing some great and sometimes not so great music being made by musicians who have touched my life.... Boo Yah bitches GDF
"Bob just got too wasted- end of story."
I think it's sad that so many, if not most, people here are assuming that this was his fault. My bet is that he was either very sick (and went on with the show anyway, in which case he should be commended), or he was dosed by someone without his knowledge (doubtful but possible). In either case it's not his fault. I really doubt that at this point in his career he's showing up at gigs so drunk (or whatever) that he can't play.
As always God Bless The Grateful Dead, a strange out of sync performance with many difficulties. I am reminded of a NYE 2 or 3 years ago when Bobby looked very uncomfortable on stage, even sitting down as J Greene continued the post midnight set. The whole night seemed lacking of any flow (nokia). Loved the row and the UJB encore. Let us see what tonight has in store.
Poor Bob. I hope the guy's alright. He's given us so much.
well said Boys, i agree Fully
3 guns shy, steal my kissin'.
Definitely a tale of 2 different bands. 1st set was almost a complete loss, but they managed (due in a big way to JK) to get through and build a little momentum (although I could have done with out Good Lovin)
2nd set musically was pretty damn good. Weir just didn't belong anywhere near a microphone last night, his vocals were totally weak; although I give him big props for the Bartering Lines The St. Stephen was one of the all time best versions I've seen any of the post Jerry bands play.
All in all, B- for last night, tonight could be very interesting.
Ithink this happened to bobby in LA if memory serves correctly during a rat dog set...walked off stage and they played without him. 3 years ago id say, and he has rocked manhy a set since. maybe he forgets you cant take pills and kill a bottle of wine, or dose like he used too. going tonight...love bob....hope he bounces.
Additional thoughts on last night.
I was pretty close but in different locations for both sets. I didn't get any staggering drunk or doped up vibes. If he did fall over at one point it might have been while I was in the bathroom, so I can't comment on that.
He seemed sober but just beat and down. Whatever it was seemed primarily emotional in nature. Again, it could have just been jet lag and exhaustion and then he got totally dorked up about missing in BE Women and then the El Paso disaster. But I don't know. It seemed like something major underlying it. Although the Shakedown to open was pretty strong and the crisp transition to the energetic BE Women didn't show anything amiss except for the missed Bobby lyrics in BE.
El Paso was definitely not on the tele-prompter. If it was then Bobby was definitely dosed because he didn't even try to look towards it. He was just hanging his head. I could just see him before the show, "Nah, just put Colors of the Rain on the teleprompter...I've played El Paso a thousand times."
Music Never Stopped and Cassidy definitely were on the teleprompter and he was definitely reading along to try to get things right.
Phil can be pretty transparent. Like I said, I was pretty close. His face and body language were more about concern and compassion. He was never really pissed or annoyed. But I guess there was some "oh well, I guess we're just going to have to make the best of it."
yeah weirdest thing i've ever seen. bobby was holding his guitar and (seemingly) playing notes throughout but was just a million miles away. the analogy that he looked like his dog died is spot on. hope he feels better tonight. but wow. actually got me depressed enough to cut out mid way through second set. i just felt awkward watching the whole thing. bummer.
I was scared. I thought he was going to fall down on the stage. I've been bashing Bob for years but it's the way I bash my cousin. Deep down, I love them both.
Fuck the show, I hope he's okay.
Looking forward to a new and improved Bob tonight.
(I can't believe I wrote "fuck the show")
My friend who bought my ticket did not sell to two friends but another lucky head who she didn't personally know...but indeed she definitely confirmed it was a total Bobby fiasco, and yet there were entire songs...very much in the second set that were wonderful such as Stella Blue...JK wonderful... Sooo if they don't cancel today's show by late Am or early PM then I may assume the condition was preventable...Bobby was in rehab a little while back...Hmmm?
Listening to the stream from the link above posted by taperrob. EXCELLENT quality. Great job Taperrob! Shakedown is very nice. Brown eyed is good even though bobby is missing in action. Extra jamming. El Paso is a "Meandering Mess" but you gotta give the band credit for staying with it and making the best of a bad thing. Dire Wolf was fine and the crowd was so obviously loving it. Bobby was no where to be heard. Row Jimmy is row jimmmmmmy.....rather unremarkable. Miracle is rocking and Bobby seems to be back in the groove vocally. Bertha is good. John saved the set. Hope Bobby drinks bottled beer tomorrow and not from an open mug.
The room EXPLODED when they came out and ripped Shakedown. Blistering, and I thought "her we go again! Phil loves NYC". What followed was not Bobby missing a few lyrics. It was something far more pathological and fucked up, and it killed the vibe in the room dead. I was chatting with two guys on the upper rail. We smoked a huge joint as soon as the lights were off and were FLYING during Shakedown. Stone cold sober by the end of El Paso and just BUMMED. The energy in the room was weird. Bobby could not even play his guitar.
Umm... reading all these posts, not one peep mentioned what this weekend really is about, the fifteen anniversary of Jerry's passing.
That has to be weighing heavy on Phil and Bobby's minds and hearts, and as we all know Bobby clearly took it the worst of them all.
I am curious have they ever played together on this weekend before?
I mean Friday they will see many people from the Family, and their collective pasts, and that has to be something that is gonna be emotional intense for all involved.
Music is healing and maybe Bob just needs our love right now?
I am sure that this may be something to consider, plus I am sure it will happen to many of us at various points this weekend.
I mean come on? It has to we have to do it for Jerry man, his music is still alive and we have to send that out to the universe and there is no better place to be, it will be something quite special I am sure.
I wonder if Bobby was going through a sugar low...it can have disorienting effect?????
I have been going to Concerts for 40 years, last night was the most pathetic, saddest, unproffesional behavior from a performer i've ever seen in my entire life. It was so bad it was comical. The audience was laughing, but probably in a bit of a shock too, hoping Weir wasnt having a stroke in front of our eyes. From the beginning of BE Women through El Paso, nobody, definitely not the other musicians had a clue as to what was happening. I joked to my friend that i'd have fired him during set break, or that they need to keep Fake Bobby from DSO in the bullpen in case this happens again.
Miracoulously he bounced back and the second set had some great moments.
The sound in the Nokia was horribly low in the firt set, maybe their monitors were not working too which might have thrown Weir. Garcia had some bad days in the end too, but nothing like this..
They hould have tried El Paso for the encore....Going back tonight, dont know what they have in store, but it will be interesting
Ted...Jerry died on August 9th...
i dont see how Bobby or anybody should forget lyrics. yes i have seen it 1st hand but its a pretty easy fix = teleprompter, hello???
the set list is planned, so put a computer screen with big lyrics in front of Bobby that so he doesnt have to strain to read it. this way he can reference the words if and when he needs to.
i saw the philly shows and herkimer this month and they blew the roof off so i am quite sure he hasnt gone senile in 2-3 weels LOL.
problem solved - you're welcome!
yes.. but yesterday was the 20th anniversary of Brents death.
The fact that Phil did the shortest donor rap that I can remember, didn't thank the crowd and didn't say how happy they were to be in New York- like he usually does- clearly indicated that he was embarrassed about the show.
Phil has had all of those years experience with leading Phil and Friends and knows what to do in these cases- in retrospect- he might have jumped in sooner to fix the first set around Bobby. We all have wonderful memories of Phil's professionalism during all of those Nokia shows- pulling off all of those nights.
Tonight is another night and Phil knows the band needs to perform.

" hope he feels better tonight. but wow. actually got me depressed enough to cut out mid way through second set. i just felt awkward watching the whole thing. bummer."
Troodle and I felt the same and did the same...Any good energy got sucked right out of the room in the beginning. They should give at least a cursory explanation as I was very upset and concerned and half jokingly yelled out 'Is there a Dr.in the house?"
Then Poz met Troodle and all was good in the world..
Ted- Sorry to have to say it, but . . .
This weekend is not the anniversary of Jerry's passing. It is his birthday Sunday (August 1).
Jerry died August 9, which is a week from Monday.
There is no way, NO WAY, that last night's disaster was because of long ago personal tragedy (for Phil and Bobby, and for all of us)! He was unsteady on his feet. He was Dazed and confused for the entire first set. Yes, he managed most of the lyrics to Miracle and Good Lovin', but the guy looked like he might fall over at any minute. I won't speculate on the reason, but the problem was manifested physically. You could see it from the back of the room.
Not the first time Bobby has spaced. He has actually been doing it for decades. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes unprofessional enough to get him "mock-fired" as stated earlier and sometimes a scary buzz killer. I wasn't there but clearly he was beyond the help of a teleprompter. Let's hope it's not the oxycontin again and he rallies tonight.
And Ted...you are so far off with the Jerry rap that you should print a copy of Claude's response and carry it around for a while.
Bobby will be fine tonight, if he wasnt they would have cancelled by now....That said, Stranger opener!
dancin opener
>>Bobby will be fine tonight, if he wasnt they would have cancelled by now....That said, Stranger opener!
Good, good call! I predict Phil will make good on last night by bringing some monstrous thunder to the proceedings. Load Bobby up on ginseng and B12, rehearse like fiends for a few hours and all will be well!
Actually the 26th was the 20th anniversary of Brent's death ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brent_Mydland
Chopper5-
Brent died July 26, 1990. Three days ago, not yesterday. Thought you'd want to know.
Sorry, everybody, I don't mean to come off as a know-it-all.
Weir is severely dyslexic: teleprompters are useless.
He's got 150+ songs rattling around upstairs. He can nail desolation row, but he'll blow Truckin'...
I hope he's fine, hopefully I'll see tonight: Anyone got an extra??
More thoughts on last nights show..
i was right up front/ center.
The whole band came out on stage with tjhe exception of Weir who came on a couple of minutes later..
Before the BEW & El Fiasco..Bobby was barely playing on Shakedown.
In fact, for much of the first set, Bobby was playing very little... Almost like there were 3 guiyar players on stage and he was trying to figure out where to fit in.. Phil and JK certainly did their best to cover..
I kept looking at Phil to see if he was getting mad, but didn't show any visible signs of that..
During the first set break, everyone was speculating on Weir.. Was he dosed? drunk? high? sick?
My guess is (just a guess) he was stoned on Oxy as he kept rubbing his face in a "down like matter"..
I think the teleprompter was on but whether its because Weir is dyslexic or because he was too buzzed to read, he mad little effort during the first set to use it. During the 2nd set, he made much more obvious use ans started strumming. I thought his best playing of the night was during Stella and Born Cross Eyed..
Finally, If Weir is addicted to pills... again- educated speculation on my part- cancel the shows and get help now..We don't want to lose you Bobby.
Special thanks to chopper for the duckit..
>>>>Ted...Jerry died on August 9th...
I know silly, but many festivals acknowledge the weekend before, since it is his birthday 8/1.
As for the speculation and the disagreement with my thoughts, who is to say who is right or who is wrong?
This all has been speculation all morning.
Does anyone know if Phil and Bobby have played together round this time?
It is just another possibility, I would much rather think is plausible; then to think it is Oxy, but we may never know.
Doughboy just for the record I have been around here for thirty years so spare me your hyperbole.
Just listening to BEW from Rob's stream. Wow, is all I can say. Cringing for the upcoming El Paso. Hope those of you going get a better show tonight. I'm sure things will be fine. I thought they might release some sort of statement though, just to quell the rumour mill and ease concerns from the faithfull.
Same thing happened in San Diego a few years back with Ratdog. We never got an explanation as to what was up with him then and I suspect we won't here. I just hope it is not a health issue.
Here's some more vids for you.
Shakedown

Shakedown>browneyed
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5nk1K0gTRE
Check out the Chimenti keyboard jam at the end of shakedown, really funky.
First time in 35 yrs of going to shows that I've ever been embarrassed for a member of the band. I'm amazed at all the BW apologists in the thread. He was high as a kite, and unable to function at his job.
I hope for his sake he returns home and gets the help he needs. There is no way Phil will continue to participate with him under these sort of conditions, not that I have an issue with that.
Isn't everyone allowed to have a bad day. Maybe he slept like shit for a couple days in a row. I saw him at the hammerstein last fall and the band ended stuck inside of mobile after many tries because Bob just didn't know the words. This band has been good and Bobby has been a big part of that.
We'll see tonight.
On the second video link, just after the 5 minute mark, you can see where Bobby fukks up the second verse of BEW, and the crowd sings the verse. Then a little explosion of laughter from the audience...unaware of the trainwreck that was unfolding.
Ted... The Other Ones/Further played on or about Jerry's birthday or anniversary of his death in 1998 and 2003.
What I'm reading about Bobby is disturbing to say the least. I hope he's alright. I wasn't at the show last night. I saw a great show 2 weeks ago in Philly. Everyone, including Bob, seemed on then. I sometimes wonder how these guys keep up the schedule they do. I'm 54 years old and I find that shows take a lot more out of me than they used to. I'm younger than Phil and Bobby and I'm not traveling from place to place every night and trying to keep all those fans happy! It has to be exhausting for them. I've also found that the old substances hit me harder than they used to. Don't know and won't speculate what was going on with Bobby last night but I urge him to do whatever he needs to do to take care of himself. Jerry abused himself to keep up and we all know the sad result of that! We should all send out positive vibes to Bob Weir, the human being who has touched our lives in so many ways. Get better, Bob and take care of yourself! Peace, Bro.
Ted, I've been around 30 years also, and certainly know that Jerry was born August 1 and died the 9th.
Two years ago at the Vibes Phil played August 2, and that weekend we marked the fest coinciding with Jerry's birthday NOT his death. I think you got caught with your facts wrong, just admit it. It's not such a big deal, but don't call someone "silly" because they called you on that.
As far as Bobby is concerned, I'm really surprised if he would risk flubbing a show due to backstage activity. I'll never forget first night Hartford '84 when you could tell he outwardly angry at Jerry who obviously was not all there, for whatever reason. Show preceidng, 10/12 Augusta ME was best show I ever saw. That Hartford show was the worst.
All we can do is hope whatever is ailing Bobby that he'll put it behind him and be well. I always thought he was the picture of health, and a true professional. I hope this was just an isolated incident.
Don't forget , Ratdog played at the Hampton Beach Casino the day of Jerry's death in '95 ...
One thing nobody has mentioned, that being yesterday was hot and muggy in the city. Maybe Bobby exerted himself physically biking or jogging and didn't recover by show time. I was out bike riding last night for about 2.5 hrs. and it really kicked my butt.
I was at that Phil show as well , and with the two only being a week apart, at least in my mind, they are one event. It is clear folks tend to prefer honoring his birthday rather than his death.
I am sorry I used the word silly, I meant that in a loving sense, not a ball busting one.
My point is that this weekend would be the first time Phil and Bobby would be playing together since 2003, thanks Doughboy, and I think that is significant to note along with it being the 15th anniversary next week.I mean you know who will be at the Vibes tomorrow. It gonna resonate deeply for them all.
nothing to worry about. probably to much (or not enough) Bee Pollen...
has anyone thought of how confusing it must be to him while hes concentrating on something and then when you mess up or get off track...thousands of people; clap, scream, laugh, and try to sing along..
though from the vids iv watched he is "out thar" more than usual.
oh no our idols are human..
(((Bobby))))
We all love him.
I say everyone light a candle, say a prayer, talk to Buddha, do whatever you do...
This scares the hell out of me, makes me so sad to read all this. Especially after seeing him at all those Mill Valley and Seafood Peddler rehearsal shows and him looking and sounding pretty great, surrounded by all his close hometown Marin friends and family. I thought things were back on track...and he appeared to be doing so well. I hope this was just that he was sick/flu type thing. But I remember the San Diego Rat Dog show, and this sounds identical to that situation, which is not good. I am hoping, and even praying that IF this is what many of you are thinking it is...that he gets it together. Not selfishly just for all of us, but for himself, his friends, and his beautiful family. We don't need another tragedy in this big GD family of ours. ((((Bobby))))
Taperrob: Thanks alot I appreciate it!
I just saw the video of El Paso. It was bad, but I was expecting worse. Let's rally and pray for Bobby that he will bounce back tonight. Be sure of it!
Yeah, we tend to celebrate the birthday because that's when he came to life as opposed to the death when he left this Earth. With birth so begins the potential, with death potential ceases.
As far as Bobby is concerned I'll place a wager that tonight will be a great show. If Bobby's health is at risk they'll cancel the show and we should all be grateful the right decision was made.
Listening to the first set and thinking wow some people seem to have seriously over-reacted on the quality. Yeah Bobby was bad but the rest of the band sounded great. Whatever his trip was I hope its all straightened out by tonight, but from what Ive heard the show wasnt bad at all. This is far from the worst show I have ever heard.
Wow, just listened to the 1st set. that was an interesting bew and el paso, especially the "start over" part. Reminds me of when I'm wasted and trying to play my acoustic and sing at 3 in the morning, can't remember any words. I hope he is okay and it was just an "I drank too much robotusin or accidentally took tylenol pm instead of regular" type of event. just listening I could feel the energy leaving the venue. Hopefully everything is okay with him. I was really impressed at many of the earlier shows last fall and this year at how bobby seemed back in shape, more energetic, and especially up-tempo. I did feel that he was slipping into some slower rat-doggish ways at some previous summer shows on certain songs. Hopefully just a bad day whatever the circumstances were. I think we'll be surprised tonight in a good way. See you there
Think Good Thoughts!
I am with Rob on this one...let's rally and pray for Bobby that he will bounce back tonight. I'm thinking he will, and it was just a very "off" night. Positive vibes only! No nay saying allowed! (((Bobby)))
Everyone has said it all, and I praise Bonito for observing Bobby's dislexia. Telepromters won't help. First let me say that the show last night was smokin'! The playing was through the roof awesome and JK kicked but---they all did. The rider was off the hook and Uncle Johns stole the show. A trully awesome version with the la, da,da,da ta daaaa... at the end was beatifully harmonized. Music never stopped was another highlight with spacey jams and superb playing.
Now onto Bobby. I wondered after the first two songs if we would see Bobby stumble down satge and fall into the audience or trip on his chord and topple the drum set. This was more than just Bobby missing lyrics. This was about a man who was either under the influence of a heaby duty substance, or someone who is suffering from a illnes we are not aware of. I honestly think that Bobby is ill. He has deteriorated tremendously this past year or so and looks too thin. I suspect he is suffering from a terminal illness (God forbid) or is being treated for a medical condition. Maybe he has a brain tumor or a nervous system disorder. I am only speculating but he truly looked comprismised by something. This was unprecedented in Dead history. The entire band was very nevous for him. It was clear t everyone in the room that something was very wrong. Bobby simply could not play or speak.
I will finish this post stating that Bobby was in full command two weeks ago so I do not know what happened last night. In the end, the show last night rocked!! Great tunes and great playing even in the face of a Bobby disaster for the first few songs of the first set. We should all be pulling for Bobby and ut him some slack right now. cheers...
Stella video...so sweet
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XoGAKBkveE
i drink...i play in a band......he was drunk...period....end of story
Here we are, Bobby had a real bad night, lets hope its not his health and he doubled or tripled up on his meds. Who hasn't needed their meds now and again. We fogave Jerry when he had to much to fast. These guys continue to bring IT for us despite their shortcomings; we all got em; I know I do. It is sad to see a man stuggle, yet we've all seen it, many have our own. Pray for Bobby, Pray for Phil, Pray for the Band and most importantly, pray for each other. Together our family will prevail. We are a breed unto ouselves, we will get by, we will survive.
Many thought the GD wouldn't make it through the 60's....yet..here we are....Over the past year or so I've seen a few handfuls of some of the best music I've ever see; and Bobby was a part of it. I've never been a huge Bobby fan but he's part of the desl. A big part. Intuition tells me he'll be ok for a while, so will Phil, but none of this will last forever. I'm taking what they give me, and I'll leave the rest.
Remeber to pray, think of what we've witnessed, how fortunate we are; I'm here to say I'm grateful. Thanks to all these guys.
Big deal, Bobby stumbled last night; God forbid he meets his reward like Jerry, Brent Keith , Pig and so on. My hopes are for Bobby and Phil to conyinue on this journey and keep brining us this joy we provide, if not I'll cry and greive and say this sucks. But for now its still happening. Can't we all just be grateful it's still happening.
What a long strange trip its been. Lets hope it continues so long as the prophets from heaven keep brining it to us so long as they see fit.
Peace,
Hoff
> God forbid he meets his reward like Jerry, Brent Keith , Pig and so on
well, no one gets out alive - in the long run
Sorry, terms like unprofessional, emabarassing, etc, just do not fly. Phil being pissed is mere speculation, especially since he reportedly gave Bob a peck at the end of the show. For the 40 years I have followed these guys/themes and variations, forgetting lyrics is old hat. You try and remember a couple hundred songs, even with a prompter. After thousands of performances I am sure this is not the first where he or any of them might have had issues, but at age 62 (I think) they become a bit more obvious. Bottom line give him a break and pray his issues are minor. Quit speculating and wait for the truth.
I just looked at the vid of Shake PT2 with part of BEW. Seems obvious, if you have some reasoning skills and experience with all of the substances in question, he was dosed. I'd bet the farm, the wife, the dog, the cats, the kids, the CDs, AND the guitars. Half of you are clueless, and the other half know exacly what's going on.
This band doing a bad show because one of its players is too stoned kinda makes it more similar to the GD, don't you think.
I hope Bobby is okay. An older person's ability to rid its body of foreign substances is diminished. The older a person gets the longer it takes to recover from a hangover, for example. If Bobby was dosed it could take a long time for him to recover fully from it. I bet he got a huge dose of vitamins after the show last night.
And to the asshole that did, fuck you, and I don't swear much in a public forum. How dare you give a unaware person a drug. I hope you get caught and prosecuted for assault.
Peace.
Let's give Bob the benefit of the doubt whether he was pranked and involuntarily dosed or dosed himself or took too much of his own medication.....it wasn't booze-- he's not falling over like a drunk-- he is spaced.
It's over-- no refunds-- I watched the Grateful Dead trying to tune their guitars for 30 minutes nearly 40 years ago they were (mostly) all tripping and they took ten minutes between songs to discuss what's next how do we feel etc etc as Bob scratched his head trying to re-tune his guitar repeatedly and Jerry had a smoke or two. That's partly why the shows back then were six hours or longer.
That was normal then. Bob screws up one time in 2010 and everyone is having a cow. Sorry but these guys have given me the joyful experience of nearly 150 shows and you don't abandon the best touring rock musicians in American history over one night in the big apple when they had one intoxicated singer and there's enough remaining talent to go on with the show.
Bob you are still the chief and I know you are a pro through and through and you will do whatever is needed to avoid a repeat of "Nokia Wednesday"
Give me (and Bobby) a break. Would the critical posters like to disclose the intoxicants they used before and at the show.....please.
In the interim does anyone have a gripe about 2010 Furthur at Penns Peak ? the Sherman ? or Philly Mann I and II ? because I know I don't-- I saw and heard them all and they were all great especially the Sherman and the band ALMOST never disappoints you.....
Bobby I will be there when you get back here on the east coast.....just look for my spinning bandana.....you've seen me up front [and I've retreated to the back center] for almost four decades now..... abandon ship ? not me......furthur onward !
Excuses and rationalizations.
"They were once messed up even more."
"Everybody has a bad day."
"The other guys on stage weren't screwed up."
"They played better at other shows."
"I've been going a long time and I plan to keep going no matter what happens."
I was there. It was awful. End of story.
