gotta be better tonight right?
Oh yeah! I think after a show like last night, I'm sure Bobby was beating himself up for going a little too far!
I say that when the band get on stage, everyone in the audience should turn on their lighter to show Bobby our support. I think if we can do this to start the show, bobby will be moved to tears...
new thread...new day
I flew in from Chicago to see the show. It was interesting and an intimate venue. How many of us in the crowd would like to be center stage during these shows? He's allowed to enjoy his own show once in awhile I guess. It's a heavy burden making us all happy. If you weren't there, save the negativity. If you were there, there was good and bad, but the good is difficult to describe and talking about the bad will only make matters worse. However, way to adapt to the situation band, we still love you.
Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu opener?
In "light" of last night, I call a TRUCKIN' to open --- "other times I can barely see..."
In light of the lyric issues for Bobby last night I definitely do not suggest a Truckin' opener. Even in the best of times Weir struggles on those lyrics.
anybody got an extra for tonight? I just got burned
I hope y'all have a good show tonight and Bobby is in fine form, as with all the band members. May there be a see of lighters to greet him.
Don't mean to be a bummer here, but I'm amazed at what people are asking for tickets for this run. I hope no one reading this paid more than double face value, which is still too much. I've never charged more than face, but paid it a couple times in 30 years. I know some of us learn about supply/demand in school, but only the band and those they employ should determine what a ticket should cost. To real Dead heads you can't really place a monetary value oon attending a show. Please don't tell me about it's NYC, etc. I paid face for ticket to 6/14/85 Greek, 20th anniversary, so I know what I'm talking about. cheers!
My car died at Herkimer and I couldn't go into the show because I had to wait for AAA. I did not sell the ticket. I miracled someone.
Bobby will come out and announce that the rumors of his demise are greatly exaggerated.
long live rock and roll and to bobby"ace" weir, from a fellow problematic situational player with certain types of drugs, long ago and far away, will hope that's something that can be dealt with, and not anything serious, and let's support someone who we have grown to more than tolerate over the years.Lets just stop the rumors, and let the guy hopefully get on with his life in a healthier way.....STAY WELL & GET WELL BOBBY...an appreciative fan for 35 years and going!!!
So the fuckin guy took one too many shrooms or double dosed and not really thinking about it.
That's happened to me countless times.
I demand the other ones tonight.
Super freaky style with Bobby exclaiming
The bus came by and I got on
ikofun so sorry you missed Herkimer, that was a show for the ages! You have few miricles saved up for that one. next time ditch the car...

It might be like riding a bike if you're a 20-something who hasn't indulged in several years. Surely another thing for a 62-year-old who might not have taken a ride in several years. If indeed Weir got dosed, well, that might explain what everyone described about last night's show.
Somewhere up there Bill Graham and Pigpen must have been giggling at Weir having been dosed.
Classic BS from our boy Phil, but glad to hear Bobby is ok tonight.
At least we know that the Pranksters aren't dead with Kesey. The question is, did bobby pass the test?
I think he did. Glad he's not stroking out.

Richard, I know that old bootleg, its Harper College in Binghampton, NY 1970. They go into Direwolf after that and end the foirst set with a great cold Jordan. I did not get to the show tonight but looking to catch my Scarlet>fire at the Vibes. Brendan, did you get in??
Got shut out. Oh well, I'm glad for all y'all that's there diggin' what looks like a groovy show
Yes, it was Harper College. One of those classic bootleg vinyls is what I had at the time. Isn't that the same show where Phil also says "how come everything seems so straaange? I believe they did Don't ease as well. Have a good time at the Vibes. RR
Yes it is Kesey's daughter. Well documented.

Yes, Kesey has a daughter - who is also named Sunshine, but the singer in Further is no relation. Different Sunshine, Different Garcia. I know, what are the odds?
For the last time, Sunshine Garcia is NOT Keseys daughter. Sheesh.
Oh, and thx for the updates!
Can someone please explain what a stream is?

wanna bet?
Sunshine is Jerry's daughter, no?

Who sends the link the band?
that's a lot of money. jerry's daughter, funny. wise cracks in here. nice set eh?

since there is so much educating going on tonight...someone please explain Wooks and Hooks for me, please? and are they dangerous? LOL
Try this:
http://www.myspace.com/sunshinebecker
Scalc what is happening?
What is the Bobstar meter reading?
dave - dirty, sleazy people that are trying to capitalize on the scene in a negative way. Unfortunately tough to tell between some of the lot crowd that are good people. sad thing man, the ruining of the scene started with the wooks and the mass profit off of tanks (as i see it anyway)
Since no one is saying otherwise, am I correct to assume that all is well with Bobby tonight? I was there last night, and was uneasy and concerned all day. The Coney Island shows were so good that I want to believe yesterday was an anomaly, albeit a scary one.
Would love to hear some details beyond the set list if anyone gets a chance. Thanks!
thats sums it up in very good way
thanks kevin. don't like to cause offense with my word. At times I would've been vulgar due to anger, but I don't think negative to negative is good.
............SOOO how does Bobby sound tonight?
From Darkengo... from urban dictionary:
Wook - noun or adjective. a dirty, hairy, stinky, mal-nourished, dishonest creature that often travels in packs, with possibly and unfortunately, mangy, multi-colored dogs on hand-made all natural, organic hemp leashes, or alone wandering aimlessly around a concert (usually "hippie music") parking lot with a few seemingly more important than the music goals; find as many mind altering substances and cram them into their bodies as fast and furiously as possible, get into the show somehow, don't lose the dog this time, and if by chance they come across unattended property such as a cooler, chair, backpack, or a beverage, it will then become their own. also once inside the show and the music begins, even if it sucks, a true wook will never be able to tell the difference because once the substances take effect, many of them can actually be seen dancing and "gooving" to music that only they can hear. wooks are only useful in one way: if you are trying to warn or scare a younger more easily influenced friend about the dangers of drugs, just tell them to observe and study the behaviors of wooks in their natural surroundings, but warn them that if they get too close, they may risk becoming one themselves!
isaw my 1st dead show in 84 at alpine valley and from then on saw the scene get litered with nitros and bad stuff started happening
too funny. i particularly like the "then it will become their own" part - but needs to go so far as "will even open up tents and grab bags" - because they have risen to that level this year
Deadhead Land reports Bob is well and doing great!
Wook and Hooks, yes do tell how these terms came about. As for Sunshine G. Who really cares as long as she can harmonize.
As for Bobby. I mean these days it's hard for me to stay on my feet for an entire show without cramping. I don't know how these guys do it. And FYI those geetars ain't feathers!! Try standing up for 3 plus hours lugging one of those around!!
As for the Hooks in Times Square there is no one definition... You have to do your own research.

Her MySpace says nothing about who she is related to, what it says is that she comes from a musical family, doesn't say if she is or isn't related to Jerry. I will just have to ask Jeff Pehrson tomorrow, I talk to him all the time, never thought to ask as I assume it was true. ;)

God Bless our boy Bobby tonight as he bounced back.
just a wonderful show. Phil has the energy of a 25 year old. Parts sounded like 1969, parts sounded like 1989, but the continuity of sound and range of vibe and emotions throughout the show was thrilling. Didn't go last night, but I have to believe that anyone at both shows would say that Bobby rebounded beautifully. A soulful, bluesy performance from him all night. The interplay between John and Jeff is something special. Looks like I'll have to get my s$%t together and go this weekend. hope everybody else had as good a time tonight
God Bless our boy Bobby tonight as he bounced back.
Amen!
A few overall notes from tonight's epic show:
The backup singers MADE many of the finest moments - particularly on Death Dont Have No Mercy.
Many of the complaints from prior night were fixed - total volume noticably higher, JK's guitar definitely louder,
Bobby was very strong, both vocally and playing - his playing tonight was extremely creative at times and very solid throughout - it was fantastic to see him this way, particularly after last night, but i might be saying this about him even if last night hadnt happened.
Bobby was THERE tonight - and it really made the evening
ok here i go....truth #1 phil did apologize for last night.......#2 bob is not dead and played his ass off tonight.....my personal opinion is last night he was drunk....tonight was sunshine sfter a hurricane....just a breath of fresh air....t jed half step and let it grow ripped...2nd set was very good...highlights were so many roads...dr mr fantasy and going down the road......have to get up and go to work ....goodnight grateful bill.....bobby is alive and well...thank god...have to admit ...didnt like touch of grey encore...but still a great time and great show
2 different people from last night to tonight....im not buying the dosing phil theory...i think he was drunk....bot so what....i liked last night but i loved tonight....and BOB IS ALIVE AD WELL
I was on the rail with my dear friend and fellow 'zoner Dz for both nights. Tonight, an awesome show. Phil's announcement is up there with Cal Expo "bullshit lie" -- best stage banter ever. Weir incredibly strong vocally, musically, presence-wise. Get the tape folks, this one's a keeper.
Did they play "Celebration", the old Kool and the Gang song, or the Hunter/Lesh song that the Quintet used to sing?
It was the P&F Celebration.
Hot show. Really hit the spot. Totally different energy on the floor from last night. It was smiles and good vibes all around. I danced my ass off and had a rockin' good time.
So relieved Bobby is OK
just got home to philly area. quick review, but first some clarification. Mountain Girl Kesey, Ken's wife, was Garcia's main love in the 60s. They had a child they named Sunshine. Garcia and Mountain Girl split, some time later she married Kesey, who adopted Sunshine (Garcia) Kesey. Jerry's daughter and Kesey's are the same girl, who is not the Furthur backup singer.
Show started slow, although Phil was dropping lots of bombs during SOTM. The band tried heroically to get Celebration to work, just couldn't do it. Several old heads I was with or near hope this song dies soon - and please I hate to be negative!
Alligator kicked some butt. Liked Philly version better - more energy - but this was nice.
Rest of set was high energy and very well done. Ruben was stellar.
Getting tired going to bed soon so brief, 2nd set started much as first, initial song selection left a lot to be desired, even though they really tried with the new one. But from Mr Fantasy on it was just killer. Dark Star wrapped around some real fun.
Keep on seeing this band.
Peace,
rt
Yay! Bet it was fantastic. I too am relieved Bobby is OK, and as said above~
God Bless The Grateful Dead
>>>although Phil was dropping lots of bombs during SOTM.
Now I'm confused as I don't see that song on the setlist~???
very happy last night
as soon as they came out Bobby looked like Bobby
loved the song selection
got my dancin opener 1 day later
let it grow was amazing
half step and the REUBEN was great
looking forward to red rocks
btw Nokia Sux as a venue
Well, that set list paints a pretty clear story, doesn't. It speaks to the toll that the road life will take, and that there will be bumps and ups and downs (So Many Roads, Fantasy, Goin' Down) including the inevitable (Death Don't) with a determination to rise above, dance, celebrate and survive!
"Hard to believe last nights train wreck was because of some stray lysergic. I dosed tonight just because I planned to then got shut out. Oh, it's sooooo hard on my system, will take a month to recover. Yeah, right. It's not like Bobby sits home between tours playing X box and eating cheesy poofs"
What a completely asinine comment. That's right, they just decided to come out and lie to everyone when it would have been easier to have said nothing at all. If you think getting dosed behind your back, by a substance that you're not familiar with, is the same as a planned trip (especially for someone 62 years old) you're out of your mind. If this did happen to Bob you have absolutely no idea how much he was given or the quality (and I know for a fact that there's some low quality crap out there these days). And you try getting up in front of 2,500 people that are all staring at you and expecting you to perform under those conditions. What are you, ten years old to think that Weir sits around getting drugged up all the time when he's off the road so he should be use to it? Try growing up if that's even possible.
Re: "missemeveryday (Rtmcdo) Mountain Girl Kesey, Ken's wife, was Garcia's main love in the 60s. They had a child they named Sunshine. Garcia and Mountain Girl split, some time later she married Kesey, who adopted Sunshine (Garcia) Kesey."
Wait, here's one for ya', did you know that the stub of Jerry Garcia's missing right middle finger was really his penis and he used it to pee but not for sexual purposes? It's true man. It turned out the axe story Jerry & Tiff told was just the "for publication" version...what really went down was really much sicker and involved covert military experiments for repairing war injuries so they tried to keep it hush hush. That's also how Jerry's dad died. Really man. I heard it from the guy who used to deliver macrobiotic fungi to Jerry's first wife's pool cleaner in Eureka.
Everybody is just so full of knowledge about all things in the GD universe.
So anyway, Sunshine Kesey is the natural born daughter of Mountain Girl and Ken Kesey. There are some lovely pictures of Jerry holding her when she was a baby but she wasn't swimming in his gene pool. She is also the big half sister of the couple kids that MG had with Jerry. All this is readily available on Wikipedia under Mounain Girl or Ken Kesey. Sunshine Kesey is a cool glass artist and you can find pictures of her and her cool giant marble like thingies online.
The singer in Furthur was named Sunshine probably for the same reasons that mothers nowadays are naming their girls "Olivia." They thought it was cool and different and had a nice ring to it. If you swing a dead cat at my daughter's day care you're going to mow down Olivias after Olivias.
They share a common name. That's it. Stephen Colbert is not related to Stepen Stills. Jerry Seinfeld is not related to Jerry Garcia. Andy Garcia is not related to Jerry Garcia and neither is Sunshine Garcia. They just have some names in common. It's really not that complicated of an idea.
cosmic sugar how do you do?
last night looked great. definitely a scarlet / fire coming tonight...cheers to bobby!
glad all is well
RT Close but no cigar. Kesey and Mtn Girl were together BEFORE she was with Jerry. Sunshine IS Keseys daughter. Jerry had a kind of paternal relationship with her being as he was with her mother for a long time afterwards. Jerry has 4 daughters. Heather, Sarah, Theresa and Keelin. Sarah and Theresa are his kids with Mtn Girl. But you are correst. The Sunshine in the band is NOT Sunshine Kesey and is no relation to Jerry. Anyone that doesnt believe that can just google image Sunshine Kesey and will see that.
ggod morning people....after donor rap phil did say and i quote "WE WILL BE BACK NEW YORK".....cant go tonight but vibes is going to get the bomb as long as someone is watching bob during the day today.....definate terrapin...scarlet....blues for allah...help slip...brokedown....have a great time everybody...wish i was there....and to whomever said nokia sux is just not from ny /nj...place is new ..clean...nice people work there convenient....it was such a trip walking around times square on a beautiful day with 50,000 tourists looking at us like we were from mars.....the sound is loud and great i was home in nj at 12:45...as opposed to the clusterfuck at coney island.....i hope they play nokia or radio city in october...that is the rumor and he did say we will be back new york...later people...have a grateful day

I thought she was Tom Constanten's daughter????
:-)
Bobby got dosed Wednesday night.... pure and simple.
Phil's comment at the start of Thursday's show confirms that. The hug was to reassure the legions that it was innocent and things are OK between them. When you get dosed, you don't know how much you've ingested or where you're headed or for how long. Wow... chills. It must have been quite an adventure for him, but understandably a concern for the audience. But as far as this forum is concerned: Many of you may have brilliant careers ahead of you as script writers.... the stories that were written after Wednesday's show regarding the reasons for Bobby's behavior plus the so called 'insights' into his life and situation were wildly creative. Some certainly more reasonable than others. I had a couple myself... but kept it to myself.
Now my own Friday morning insight: I bet Bobby feels even more like a survivor today than he did before. You know.... that euphoric feeling you get after a close call? We all need to scare ourselves once in a while. Furthur indeed! Wow... chills.
"....In the land of the dark, the ship of the sun was driven by the Grateful Dead...."
Reports of Bob Weir's demise were have been greatly exaggerated.......He was ON tonight!
For me, the show really took off at Ruben & Cherise throught the end of the 1st set. The 1st four tunes were uneven at best (Alligator didn't come close to the electricity of the Mann version)
The 2nd set was excellent from the start. I even enjoyed the new Bob tune tonight (hated it at Gelston Castle)- something about it made me think it is the new Black Throated Wind.......
Dark Star throuhg the end of the show = Heaven
If they had played a Dew, the place would have melted down (Oh well, saw 2 already this tour)
Very Happy this morning......not even giving a 2nd thought to skipping GOTV. Can't wait to get the sbd!
thanks for the updates good to know that bobby got it together

Closer, but no cigar.
Heather, Annabelle, Theresa (Trixie), and Keelin.
Glad you had a great time Keith, excellent.
WOW!
"but vibes is going to get the bomb as long as someone is watching bob during the day today....".
The show tonight will be what it is...another show. I hope it's good. Do you folks really think bobby needs a babysitter? Perhaps he does. Steve Parish tried like hell to guide Jerry, but to watch him.... I think not. These guys are adults and really don't need watching. He'll do what he wants to do; just as we all do. "Now bobby remeber to drink your juice and finish your veggies; oh and it'd be best if you pour yor juice yourself." C'mon folks, the dude had a bad day/night, and he follows 24 hrs later in good form. I'm just glad he isn't seriously ill. I'm by no means an expert; I didn't even know sage & spirt when it was being played in Herkimer; I learn something new everyday. I do know I've been going to many many shows sense 1977, and I like it. I've seen and more importantly learned alot in those years. Some show are better than others; some days folks have a bad day or take or drink one or 2 more than they should have. Furhtur is a band that exceeds my expectations as a phan, dead head, tour junkie; whatever I call myself. IT is still happening, bobby bounced back from a rough night, and they've got more shows planned. Let's keep going, its fun, I'm still learning, I feel the love when I'm there and get to carry it around with me. Any of the negative vibes are left behhind for others to do what they will with.
I'm still sucking air, Phil at 70, Bobby at 60 something are still doing it night after night and very very well I might add; hey, it's all good....right?
I ride Harley, So Many Roads, along with about 100 other songs touch my heart; ya know, everytime I let the clutch out, I'm never totally sure where the road will take me, but one thing is always certian, there will be bumps in the road, I'm never sure whats around the next bend, at times it's as smooth as silk, there are moments of sheer beauty, awe, some fear, friendship and joy. Lots of feelings going on; to manyreally to mention them all, oh yea I even get angry too. Ya know, I love every minute of it. I love it, so I do it. The same goes for The Grateful Dead for me, thats why I still do it. I love it more than words can tell. You never really know what's going to be around that next bend in the road.
IT is still happening! Peace - I think I'll take a ride....
Agree with Tom 's comment above. I was dosed without knowing it at a show in the summer of 88. This was a frightening experience not knowing what/how much/how strong/how long. I went from 0-1000mph in a matter of moments. Bobby's whole demeanor changed within moments at the end of Shakedown. That deer in the headlights look he got was fully explained to me by phil's comment since I've been there.
Last night's show was fantastic. The band was playing like they had something to prove. R&Cerise had a great outro jam. Let it Grow was nailed. Jeff was rocking the Hammond all night. Bobby's was impassioned during Death Don't and the background singers brought the whole tune up several notches. The floor was bouncing during gdtrfb. With only 8 hours of sleep over the last 2 nights, I fell completely energized by that performance. This is why I have kept going back 100s of times.... Thanks furthur!
Back to work....sigh.....
That
Well you see all the negative speculation was just that, and whomever posted why would they even say it if it were not true is spot on. They have no reason to lie....Phil knew what was going on last night...thus the hug and peck....if Bob was drunk he would have been upset. Being dosed at 62 is no fun, Thom2 thanks for setting someone straight, now a days these guys have lives and just do not sit around and get high all the time, even back in the days Weir abstained quite a bit. At 58 I was dosed a year or so ago at a show by drinking something someone gave me.....I was pissed and worried since I had no clue of what it was. I was with friends and worked through it but it was not a real good time.....the only solace was that having taken many a venture in past days I at least had some idea of what to expect....it becomes mind over matter. Glad these issues have been put to bed. Glad Bobby is back to form.

You are correct sir. Not sure why I had Sarah stuck in my head.
Probably thinking of Jerry's first wife, Sarah Ruppenthal...
Sarah was Jerry's 1st wife: http://www.thefreelibrary.com/JERRY+GARCIA'S+DAUGHTERS+RECALL+LIFE+WITH+FATHER.-a084037391

Well~have fun at the vibes love.;)
Mid Afternoon the next day and I'm still juiced and groovin about what a great show it was. Still smiling too.
On reflection, I don't buy Phil's line either but I'm glad he said something to acknowledge Wednesday rather than nothing.
And Scalcione, you told me that Becker was Garcia's daughter last winter.
HaHa, no you didn't.
The DJ (Stef) just repeated the story on Jam On Sirius.
I agree with those that say dosing someone, especially at this age and in this day, is just not cool!!! It's not the sixties/seventies and we're not in our teens/20's.
I never thought it was cool, period. That's a serious thing to do to anybody and no one has the right to put another human being (or horses in Mickey's case) through that experience without their consent and knowledge of time, placement, etc.
In NYC, anything is possible...
dosin', out of body experiences, alien abductions, etc...
They ALL performed BEAUTIFULLY and they did my song!
XXXOOO
NYC has always presented some issue for our friends. Garcia always "misbehaved" in NY and several times it was the ruin of his abstenance. Good source, no reason to doubt if you listen to shows same run later dates. If I was with good friends and was dosed I knew I could trust them....out of the blue like several years ago.....not so cool......no trust. Trust the ones I was with was always a key element of good trip vs bad....not to mention knowing where it came from.
First of all, about the thing with Bobby--whether he was dosed, drunk, whatever, its a lesson to all of us that when we get too fucked up, things stop being fun (by accident or on purpose). We've all gone to a few shows, parties, etc., where we've gotten way too drunk/high, took too much of whatever and ended up really fucking things up--and I've pissed people off and fucked up a few friendships that way that I'll never get back. Bobby pissed some people off two nights ago that, judging from some of the reviews, will never forgive him because of their disappointment coupled with what they paid, how far they traveled, etc..but he's human like the rest of us and he made a mistake, intentional or not. We have to forgive, but not forget...and remember there is a lesson here.
I was talking to a nice couple and some other people at the show about knowing your limits, getting just fucked up enough to have a good time but still being in control. Its a hard thing to do. We all want to have fun, we all like getting messed up but we have to serve our function in society as well--we have an obligation to our employers, friends, etc (unless you were begging for change outside the venue last night), and these guys have an obligation to make music and perform to a standard that die-hard fans expect when they shell out lots of money and travel long distances to see them. I talked to a 19 year old kid from Montreal and a 50 year old guy from Wisconsin who flew in just for this show. I also knew a few people who paid over $200 for tickets and heard of some going as high as $400.. I almost sold my ticket to this one after hearing the Bobby bashing but so glad I didn't.
Give it to Bobby and the guys for coming through and making up for it in a big way last night. Bobby was very solid and Phil and John were absolutely killing it as usual. John/Phil interplay during some of the jams was really special and got everyone really into it.
Set 1 Highlights for me were an inspired Tennessee Jed and R&C that really got the crowd into it. Did anyone else notice during R&C John singing "and Rubin's song took on a different tone"...then gave this little smirk and played some ridiculous lick on his axe I've never heard before. I'll tell ya that guy can F'n rip it...and there were times last night they really let him take over. Mississippi Half Step was great, especially at the end "Across the Rio-grand-e-o" mellowness that turned into a sick jam at the end of the show. Then right into Let it Grow which Bobby really did a nice job with with a good jam during. My mind was officially blown by that point and those I talked to in the crowd thought the same.
Set 2: So Many Roads--John plays and sings this one like none other (except Jerry). I was up close and looking at the emotion in his face he is so in tune with the song and the music, and the spirit of the song he conveys so beautiful that if it was your first time hearing the song you couldn't help but feel its conveyance and meaning EXACTLY the way Bob Hunter and Jerry wrote the fucking thing. The first time I heard that song live was at the same venue, Nokia, 9/27 of last year when John sang it with DSO. John brought it that night.. I shook his hand after the show--he didn't say anything but sort of gave me this look of relief, letting all the energy out of his body, soaked in sweat, humbled that I waited until security was almost throwing me out just to shake his hand.
The new tune was nice, but what really did it for me was the Other One and then out of nowhere the ELEVEN (just learning to play this one on my guitar--which I started playing/learning after being inspired by THIS band)! Was waiting for this at Mann after they played St. Steven the 2nd night--hoping to get it later in the set that night but never came. They brought it back just for me. SECOND time this happened on the tour, I booked early at Herkimer when they were playing Terrapin Flyer--then at the Mann 2nd night they picked up where they left off in the song--as if they knew I missed that part of the song at Herkimer and wanted to hear it...just WOW! Talking about getting exactly what you wished for without even wishing for it (if thats possible). GDTRFB and WBYGN were nice to close, and I enjoyed Touch but was hoping for a Terrapin encore.
I really agree with "dnem"'s review--that the show was a metaphor about the roads that life will take (including for the band) and the setlist was written with that intention. The best show I've seen out of 13 Furthur shows...cant wait till October (if the rumors are true)
Dave
Just saw that Furthur has announced 2 MSG shows in Nov. The 20th and 21. That ought to be quite interesting
As a musician, there is NOTHING like trying to play music when you are dosed, especially if you were not expecting it. This music is tough enough to play as it is. Whew, I can't even imagine.
Some people are incredibly gullible and WANT things to feed into the romantic mythos, even when it isn't romantic at all. I'll bet everything I got, and everything I'll ever have, that Bob wasn't dosed, and that whole bit of theater was just that. I won't pretend to understand Phil and the band's motives. Better to give a silly explanation than no explanation at all. Helps to put it all behind them/us a lot more quickly than the monster of speculation. Sharp political move. Move on.
Yo! Check out Further.net. Worcester and MSG as the "LAST THREE SHOWS" of the fall tour. Looks like we're in for more....
MSG-----ACE is A...OK
everybody needs to stop buyg into this dosed crap....i personally do not drink anything from a stranger unless it is sealed and theres no way he would either...on top of all that i was standing 20 feet away from him and watching him the whole time...he couldnt stand up...and he did fall down while he was kneeling...he was drunk...plain and simple...if he was dosed dont you think a doctor back stage would have told him to skip the second set or get medical help...and on top of all that i was told by a friend who is phils manager that bob drank a bottle of gin by himself an hour before the show...after the show jill and phil confronted him and im being told it wasnt pretty....im also being told by someone in the know that bob isnt supposed to drink and when he goes out hes usually with a sponsor...when in san fran his usual sponsor is lars ulrich from metallica...the few times ive met weir he was drinking non alcoholic beer...ill even tell you the brand he dranks...i saw him drink 10 sharps in a bout 4 hours after a further show in 96 in ventura at the hotel bar after the show...he did however smoke 2 packs of marloboro mediums because i went across the street and bought them for him...having said all this theres nothing wrong with controlled or social drinking but when your a performer you need to wait til the show is over...still love the man
^^^ innie like a motherfucker
If your trying to stop drinking stop with the fuck in non alcoholic beer that is no fuck in help
"Feels like I've been here before..." Well, one could certainly use that to represent Furthur's two night run at Time Square's Nokia Theater in New York City July 28 and 29th. While not attending the first night of Furthur's eventful two night stay at the small theater, it was apparent that the whole crowd knew what happened the previous, whether being there or not. Bob Weir had lost his stability and overall control onstage for reasons not nescesarilly unknown. However, being the classic showman that Weir is, he did not call for a canceling of the show, nor did they shorten it by any means from what I heard. Just a month earlier, it was Coney Island which was in correlation with these two shows as part of a triple-threat package. The overall love that Bob and Phil have shown for New York City is indefinitely present. From the Dead 09 tour where they had three shows in a day, then two Madison Square Garden appearances, and two East Rutethford, New Jersey performances, it was no wonder why the crowds still showed support even during the episode Weir and the crowd both experienced.
The night got off to an interesting beginning when bassist Phil Lesh walked over near Bobby near the beginning of the show, wrapping his arm around him, and spoke to the crowd (with a straight face) "I told Bobby prior to tonights show, never drink out of a cup you never poured yourself." Now, this wouldn't be out of the ordinary for the friend of someone for 45 years to joke about, but the humor was not revealed anywhere from Bob Weirs straight face. Given the pre show talk, the crowd appeared to take it as confirming the rumor of Bob Weir being dosed. Nevertheless, the show started up with a rough beginning to "Dancing In The Streets" but found its form at certain parts, finally stabilizing enough to segue into "Celebration," a Phil Lesh/Robert Hunter 2001 debuted song. Then, the Phil Lesh famed song found itself evolving into the early Grateful Dead classic off of Anthem Of The Sun, "Alligator." While when played in the early days of the Grateful Dead it was usually a second set song according to the 51 times it was played from January 1967-April 1971, Furthur wailed on this tune from a early standpoint in the show, and graced with empowering jams, lead by John Kadlecik's stellar licks and singing. The four song combination came to a finish with a steady "Tennessee Jed" where Bob Weir focused on his guitar playing, foreshadowing a strong night from him ahead.
"Reuben And Cerise" was where the first set really took off for me, highlighted by John Kadlecik's lead guitar work and Jeff Chimenti's top-notch keyboard talent. As the Jerry Garcia Band classic came to an end, it was Bob Weir's time to shine once again with Ratdog's "Money For Gasline." From past versions that Furthur has done, the band really grasped the vibe and culture of the song, therefore letting it breathe out through its pure nature rather than rushing or trying to perfect it. Next was a crowd enthused "Mississippi Halfstep," again led by Bob Weir, and also held down in the percussion section by New York native Joe Russo who was on point with being fantastic throughout the night. "Let It Grow" sent the first set packing and parallel with sending the energy through the roof. My take on "Let It Grow" is that it could be considered the "Terrapin Station" of the Weir/Barlow collaboration back in the Grateful Dead era. Furthur carried out this jam packed masterpiece with a gentle approach but carrying a pouch of intensity, eventually erupting during the peak.
During set break, I heard things very much similar to "wow, Bobby is back!" and, "Bobby is just on fire, especially after yesterday." Before you knew it, the floor got packed, then the 2nd level, and people in the top level got to their seats in anticipation of another great set ahead.
The band crawled on stage, and after some tuning and making sure the sound was fine, "So Many Roads" started up. John Kadlecik sweetly sang with his own persona, and Jeff Chimenti complimented his vocals from the graceful piano playing that he laid on top of the surrounding instrumentation. Following "So Many Roads" was the new Bob Weir/Robert Hunter tune "Seven Hills Of Gold." From other versions of this new installment in the repertoire of Bob Weir, you could tell that this song needed some tweaking to make this a fan favorite. It appears the band has worked hard on tackling the overlapping instrumentation, and showing the accents that allows it to flow. Bobby seemed confident in his singing and playing. A blues influenced "Dear Mr. Fantasy" had the hugest cheer at the beginning of any song prior in the first set. Jeff Chimenti, John Kadlecik, Joe Russo, and Phil Lesh all locked in to a heavy jam frenzy, where Bob Weir seemed to sit back and enjoy the improvisation flowing through his band mates. The backup singers Jeff Pehrson and Sunshine Garcia Becker's highlight of the night took place during "Dear Mr Fantasy" when they tied together the different tones that is all throughout Furthur's vocals. A jam that started more heavy, into a light jazzy frolic initiated a segue into "Dark Star (v1)". This lineup provides a early Grateful Dead sound (1970's), so the channeling of this song is something that a portion of the song most likely didn't experience as the Dead didn't get as loose with this song after the 1970's, nor did they play it as often. It was nothing spectacular, much more a entrance into a early dead themed extravaganza. The loose noodleing towards the end of "Dark Star" enabled Phil Lesh to signal for something new, in this case "Unbroken Chain." Phil's vocals lightened up the crowds faces, because his unique and usually discouraged (by some of the same people who chanted "Let Phil Sing" in the 80's) voice was so fitting for his own song. As the time progressed, the music got heavier, and then faded into another Phil Lesh gem, "The Other One" which begins with him picking with a low tone in a quick manner, where the rest of the band follows with a explosion of euphoria. Following "The Other One" was once again a early Grateful Dead tune, "The Eleven." Shaking the room with cheers from the crowd, locked in musical communication toppled on top of one another, still keeping in time with the deeply detailed song.
Following "The Eleven" was a Rev Gary Davis standard "Death Don't Have No Mercy." Weir came to the microphone and paid little to no attention to perfecting the rhythm guitar part, as he nailed the blues aspect during his emotionally saturated vocals. As a song that a lot of people know, everyone stood in shock of how into the moment Bob Weir was, eventually on the tip of his toes belting out "No no no, dead don't have no mercy, in this land," toying around with the lyrics to emphasize a point. To have some closure on the earlier "Dark Star," another hazy spaced out period of unstructured improvisation gave way to "Dark Star (v2)." It was here where the crowd took the previous combination in and voiced their opinion in a huge roar. "Going Down The Road Feeling Bad," was nothing out of the ordinary, rather was where I was hoping the band would then transition into a huge "Scarlet Begonias," or "Help On The Way> Slipknot> Franklin's Tower," but instead ended the second set with a chill giving "And We Bid You Goodnight."
As the band walked offstage, Bob Weir looked relieved to have made it through the night without another freak accident, and the crowd was on the same page as well. It was a quick banter, as the 7 piece band came back on to finish off the night with an average performance of "Touch Of Grey." I was more impressed by the crowd enthusiasm and that feeling of having a real connection with everyone else attending the show rather than this encore.
It was a night filled with intimacy, nervousness towards the beginning, and satisfaction in the end. Nothing short of a great performance from the two men who have played the New York City area countless times, following this performance with an announcement regarding two nights of Furthur at Madison Square Garden in November.
I have been to a bunch of Furthur shows and got lucky to see of the better ones (7/11 Phily; 7/5 Stroudsburg; 2/24 RCMH) but something about this show was awesome. Always psyched when I get to hear some pretty psychedelic stuff (Alligator jam, Dark Star, Awesome Other One!, Eleven)...but Mr. Fantasy>Dark Star>Unbroken Chain>Other One>Eleven>Death>Dark Star>GDTRFB>WBYGN was one of the hottest sustained run of songs I've seen this band play.
I had a great time. As I do at almost every Furthur show I've been to.
Like my sponsor told me 16 years ago: "non-alcoholic beer is for non-alcoholics".
well put Tyler
