Rob, how did you know set 2 at 10:05?
he was there
amazing show tonight, and I was standing behind TaperRob all show long. Thanks again for taping and sharing your amazing pics and audio. I'm now thinking I need to sneak back down to NYC again before this run is up...
all the sunday shows at nokia are matinee's i believe. explains how the entire setlist was posted as early as 10
set 1 started at 6:41, ended at 7:51
set 2 started at 8:22, ended at 9:55
encore at 10:00, ended at 10:05
this show was a lot stronger than saturday's show (i was not at friday's)
the samson and delilah was intense and very heavy.
The Uncle Johns Band has Jackie on acoustic guitar, Larry on mandolin and Barry on guitar
Barry had a wicked mutron III sound almost exactly like jerry's - very, very satisfying
but from China Cat all the way through to the end was as good as it gets, some out-there-space followed by intense groove - the floor was dancing and lost - wonderful
saturday was fun, but it was a song night - this was the rockin night
i'll post more later - gotta refuel....
Excellent!
Thanks Taperrob and fellow Zoners. I will be there on Thursday...
After a really bland first set, an absolutely mind bending second set. I danced my ass off front and center, and was surrounded by some cool people who were really in the groove. Sless adds so much to this band, it's not even funny. Great to see Phil and him embrace warmly after the set, and Phil lingered long after everyone had left and applauded the audience. Really proud. Great mature performance from this band. Deep deep deep 74 style free jazz space. At some point there was an honest to god Mind Left Body Jam, which blew me and a few other people away. Stranger, Althea and Sampson were incredibly hot, but the freom UJB on it was just on a different plane. Elevator cannot be adequately described, and Rider was just too much. Box was the perfect encore for a very special night
IntoAshes...you had curly hair and were dancing your ass off. I was the guy just behind you to your left. It was great, wasn't it?
Very strong show. My first of the tour and I was very happy with it. Not sure if there were discreet jams after Good Lovin' and NFA. Will have to listen to tape. Talk about a great set ending combo! The Good Lovin' was very inventive. There was a brief, fierce jam after Crazy Fingers which hinted strongly at New Speedway. Great, full speed transition from NFA>Franklin's. Great to see that one in the rotation both with and without Help>Slip.
Sless played some very clean melody lines in Stranger. Phil did a relatively clean job with the vocals in Althea, which he sometimes struggles with. Interesting instrumentation: UJB through The Eleven had Larry on mandolin and Jackie on acoustic guitar. I guess having Sless there on the electric (he played more electric than he did slide all night) opened up some possibilities.
I think it was in Althea, Larry and Barry played a beautiful unison part on electric and pedal steel, respectively. Sweet.
The jam after UJB did in fact contain a brief Mind Left Body jam! Then, before China Cat, Jackie hinted ever so slightly at Midnight Rider. I got the feeling he was ready to go for it but Phil, while quite amused, decided against it and kind of nodded the idea away.
I would say that it was a pure space after China Cat, not a jam. However, looking at the set list I may just be mis-remembering the location of the space. Wherever it was, it was a pure space.
Gonna be a fun run. The band is playing great. Can't wait.
That was indeed me, curly hair and all. Can't wait to hear the tape of this one.
This was a loose, laid back but RIPPIN' show (stronger than I ever thought this band could be). The addition of Barry adds some real psycedelic energy and firepower. It also caused Larry Campbell to come out of the coma he seems to perpetually be in (at least at the 4-5 shows I have been to with him in the band) and make a real contribution. I have always felt his fiddle/mando playing much more interesting than his guitar work but he was really laying it down a few times, especially in the jams. The jams were SICK... reminscent of the "Q" of 2001-3 (the standard to which no post gd band has risen above)- long and exploratory and never stale. This was a very heady show... a true Sunday nite stealth show. I hope they roll with this groove tomorrow!
Larry has always played better when Barry is in the band. Just go back and listen to the late '05 shows. Barry on guitar is what this band needed in a bad way, glad that Phil saw the light. Can't wait for Saturday.
>>>an honest to god Mind Left Body Jam
Can anyone confirm this? Downloading now...
I assumes its in the China Cat > 11 >>>> Rider somewhere?
Hey everyone thanks for a great night. I had a blast! I posted a review of the show on my blog if you wanna give it a read.

It's not very long, but it's definitely there. It's somewhere btwn UJB and Rider, but I can't tell you where. It's all one big happy blur at this point...
Yes, there was a MLBJ, but very short, I think they only went through the chord sequence twice, so that's like eight to twelve bars of music or maybe 25 seconds worth, but it was definitely the MLBJ - I wrote it down at the time in my notes.
The mind left body jam is between uncle johns band and china cat.
definite mind left body although very subtle and surreal... with Larry on mando and I believe Jackie on acoustic guitar... these guys are starting to get it!
Uncle>China was the best part of the show for me!

Uncle Johns Band thru The Eleven - Jackie acoustic, Larry mando, Barry guitar
Listening to the stream of this show now. Yup, it was as good as I thought at the time. The drugs don't lie. This band has come on leaps and bounds from the summer shows I saw, and they were not too shabby back then. Can't wait to pick up a few more dates once El Sless returns...
Highlights:
Franklins - really good Barry and Larry solos
Uncle Johns Band - really good steve piano solo
Barry's guitar sound was superb here, with a mutron III sound almost exactly like jerry's from the 70s.
Mind Left body Jam, although very short, almost like a quote rather than a full performance
Everything from China Cat on - this was the intense hard rocking groove that I love so much
Other thoughts:
Crazy Fingers was okay, but jackie's singing was not right (and I am jackie fan).
They should have let Teresa sing it. I think she would have made it superb. After hearing her sing Here Comes Sunshine on saturday, I think she could have done a better job on crazy than jackie.
I think she should get more lead vocal chances. She has a great voice and she retains the vocal phrasings that jerry used. Jackie sometimes changes the phrasing, which is fine cause the music should evolve, but Teresa's verison of HCS was so powerful, I think she should get another chance at one of the ballads, like China Doll, Stella Blue, To Lay Me Down, Brokedown Palace, or Row Jimmy.
The contrast between saturday and sunday was dramatic. Saturday was a "song" night. Sunday was a "steamroller" rock night.
One mans treasure is certainly anothers trash....one man gathers what another mas spills.
I am not a big Samson & Delilah fan, but they killed it. Best I ever heard. Iactually love UJB, but ironically I thought this version sucked some life out of the second set - i loved the first 4 songs of set 2. They recaptured it as they jammed, then went into the Eleven - what a treat that was! Some intersting placings of songs, and not all the usual pairings which was cool. Thought jackie green had some fine moments in Set I. But Barry and Larry were the men in Set 2. Sless on regular 6-string along with Larry takes the band to a whole new level, he was great. Molitz was fine throughout the show. Another part of the show i liked was Ball & Chain - i really like that tune. peace out ya'll !!
The key to success, imho is keeping jackie AWAY FROM THE ELECTRIC GUITAR!!!He is NOT a leader and should leave the REAL WORK to players that have the most chops; ie larry, or the deepest improv skills;barry sless to get the music where it should be. I have been on the bus since 67 and it can still get to where it needs to be; IF!
really enjoyed the spirit of this show. an out-and-out psychedelic barnburner? nope. just a sweet-spirited, committed, looose-but-tight show > indeed, the 'stealth sunday' that someone mentioned up above.
much of the second set's arrangement - with jackie on acoustic or piano, larry on mandolin/fiddle, and barry on electric guitar, was really really nice. i was worried that it wouldn't be able to get into the deep groove, but that was most def not the case, as china cat > 11 > space showed! barry is such a melodic player in contrast to the more (hate to say it) "cliche" / pentatonic approach of larry and jackie, it really adds depth to the music.
they seemed to give molitz a little more presence that i have seen in the past - he is a very well rounded player and contributed well.
it was a great mix of americana, good ol' grateful dead, a bit of psychedelic seasoning here and there, and a persistent theme of LOVE running throughout the show. box was a fitting closer, reminding us of phil's wisdom and devotion to creating sacred energy together. spread it beyond the concert hall, phriends!
It was an entirely awesome show. Some great comments above... but ultimately you just gotta go with the vibe, which was high energy, acrobatic and very positive right throughout. John Molo drove all those tempo and mood changes effortlessly - if you listen to the show again, listen for that. And Jackie brought it home time and again, shaping the musical conversation. You could see Phil appreciating his efforts as he regularly landed the transitions musically. It'll be hard to top this one - but they've got 11 more shows to try.
Listened to it twice now, once each for joe beacon's and muletaper's version (I wasn't there) and it sounds like the best of the 3 nights to me so far.
Great stuff.
Hope they bring it tonight and I'm sure they will.
Heading downtown Now.
Barry makes all the difference in the world. 1st 4 tunes of the 1st set I was just "not feeling it" (even had to step out to the lobby for the Jackie Pop Tune) - same ol', same ol' - then Barry switched to 6-string and the rest of the set took off - the first Crazy F for this lineup (I think) - raw but well attempted - Franklin's w/o Help-Slip - typically I would not be happy w/this but since all of the Slipknot's by this lineup are so Phoned In, I was happy - the transition into Franklin's was good, and they FINALLY played it with much conviction. Then the 2nd set - all the first run of tunes was good (I even like About Cell Block #9 as a Jackie Pop Tune) - then the UJB-China Cat-11 brought it all home - Barry on lead lets Larry play other instruments and Jackie on acoustic sounds MUCH better than him trying to wank away clumsily on this type of stuff - overall this run of tunes was the best performance by this llineup I've seen or heard yet - and Barry was NOT sounding like a Jerry clone to me - very subtle and supportive of the other players - THANKS PHIL for letting Barry play lead! He went back to pedal for the Elevator but Larry's lead on that is so cool it didn't matter. Oh and it seemed to me they didn't do the last verse of Uncle John's so I was expecting a reprise but I could have missed it - will have to listen to the stream. Oh and yeah, funny thing is everyone around me was dancin' up a storm for the 1st few tunes I was not into, then as soon as it was interesting (Crazy Fingers) all the conversational yakkity yak started - go figure!
They just keep getting better and better. Clearly the band is having as much as we, the crowd, are... even compared to the spinning twirling areas!! NFA > Franklins --- SICK!!! Did Jerry justice on Crazy Fingers, Stranger, Samson, China Cat, 11, ELEVATOR JAM!!!!, IKYR... are you kiddin' me?!?!!! 100% silly dancing fun inspired with pure spiritual MAGIC!!!
Hey guys, I am new to the Phil Zone... The only Phil show I have seen before this one was the 7/13 show at Jones Beach. I was lucky to find that whole show availible for free on Archive.org.
I haven't had luck finding this one, however I will do anything to have this show! I will even pay, I need this thing on my itunes. It was amazing!
I am not experienced with etree.org and all that stuff.
Please show me the way! I need to have this show!
I may be going back Thursday, too. So psyched!
It will eventually be available on Archive.org. Just gotta wait. Funny that 10/31 & 11/3 are already there but not yet 11/1 or 2. Just a matter of the tapers being on tour and needing some down time to deal w/uploading. With the 2 days off now it has a good chance of showing up.
My short video clips from this show can be found here_http://www.vimeo.com/strobephil/videos/sort:date
peace
cant believe i missed this
cant believe im missing all of them
Wow! thats for those videos.
For who ever was here, I'm curious to know your favorite part of the night.
I was against the rail all night, I'm at the tender age of 17 and never experienced anything like it.
I would have to sat my favorite part was Crazy Fingers, I never would have thought I'd be hearing it and Barry's playing on it was just too good...
Strobe, the video stammers on my end. Is there anything you can suggest? Was watching Althea and Crazy Fingers.
Vincent, good for you!! Nice show to see for your second show. Were you on the rail of the front row or by tapers?
I was on the rail in front right in front of Steve and Barry..
I really hope to be there tonight.
I'm listening to this show for the 3rd time through. I wasn't there in person, but I think so far the:
Jam (Mind Left Body Jam) ->
China Cat (jackie) ->
The Eleven (primarily steve) ->
space ->
Elevator ->
I Know You Rider * (sung by all)
stretch is the strongest segment of the run so far. The unexpected mandolin and acoustic guitar on China Cat>Eleven is brilliant! I hope Nokia gets some stuff on par with this when I return for tomorrow and saturday's shows!
THANK YOU PHIL (and all your amazing friends)!
Hey Althea
The vids are kind of large. You need a faster computer if they are jumpy.
I can't view them at work with a slow computer and DSL.
At home my Comcast Cable and laptop scream.
Try letting them load all of the way before playing.
I hope you get them to work.
Thanks
strobe
I caught the first 3 nights of the run. And they were all great shows. Here's a video of Elevator from this show that I took. I had to edit it down to fit on youtube. just had to cut out the space that led up to it. hope you like it.
