Thanks for posting the link Spike. I enjoyed that. I think this was really good for what it is. In "Other Stuff" here on the Zone, some folks have complained about the song's length. And said the performance "sucked." But what else could you expect? The band would need at least 10-15 minutes to open up and do a cookin' jam that is the ensemble's real strong suit. But this TV format doesn't allow for it.

This abridged performance worked really well as a "teaser" to try to fill some seats at the weeknight Nokia shows. Everything I love about the band was shown here, but just in very small doses.

I enjoyed this a lot more than when the "Dead" played on Conan or one of the other late night shows a few years back. Their version of "The Wheel" just really fell flat. I thought this "Sugaree" however had a spark to it. There was good guitar interplay between Jackie and Larry and Jackie sang with raw passion. Plus you got some good close ups you can't get from the seats or floor at Nokia. And you could actually hear Molitz loud and clear for the whole thing!

Funny though, with Jackie doing the lead vocals and getting the spotlight, the uninitiated might have said to themselves "wow that Lesh guy has aged well! He doesn't look a day over 27!" At least though, Conan addressed Phil by name while shaking hands at the end to clear up some possible confusion.

Very nice! Tight arrangement of Sugaree with a fun twist or two. Jackie did a good job fronting the band, but he looked really stoned or something? Teresa could try to liven it up a bit. Better than Donna though on harmonies. Sure do miss Joan Osborne from that one Dead tour- she rocked this tune to high heaven a la Pigpen. Larry did nice, tight leads, Particle Dude pulled off a nice B3 moment, Phil looked like a really healthy old rocker, Mt. Molo had fun on his cocktail kit. Solid performance in a clutch situation. If I had never heard of these guys before I'd want to check 'em out further.

>but he looked really stoned or something?

if you are attending any more of the Nokia shows, look closely. I think this is Jackie's normal demeanor (possibly assisted with frequent doses of cannabis.) He has this look on at a lot of the shows

Hey Now!
Saw it on TV last night. Pretty good performance, nice short song, they couldnt do more with such little time. The dumb thing was - the 2nd guest didn't show up!! I was excited fpr a sec - thought Conad would give Phil the extra time. Instead he does some dumb time wasting crap and rambles on like a fool. Oh well. Smoe tasty guitar from Larry though, even if brief. and as Pinman said, Molitz had a nice monment too. well - i still have 2 more Nokia shows to see!! hahaha. ttyl

I thought Phil and Friends were great, Jackie sang really cool, and they should have let them play more since that one guest didn't show up, instead of watching Conan spin his wedding ring, Eddieboy!

So I'm going to post a seemingly stupid question. Who's the chick? I haven't seen Phil in a few years because well, PLQ is over and the new band just doesn't do it for me.

I think Sugaree, while not bad, had none of the energy of PLQ, and frankly that's how I've felt about every post-PLQ Phil recording I've listened to.

The "chick" is Larry Campbell's wife Theresa Williams. That's the guitarist with the long brown hair for the uninitiated. For a good idea of what TW brings check out Levon Helm's Dirt Farmer. Beautiful harmony vocals from Theresa W.and Amy Helm.

Why do bands like this never get interviewed? Mainstream acts do.
