Just got home. SMOKING. As usual. For me, now that i look back at the show, the highlight (not that there was only one!) was DEFINITELY Help>Slip>Eyes. SUper DUper. I know, it had to have been hotter in set 2, and it was, but pound for pound, that helpslipeyes was the best stuff of the night. The rest of the first set was dynamite as well. LARRY CAMPBELL cannot be stopped. For the 3rd time in 5 shows, i was parked on the rail right in fron of him and he was as crisp and clear as a bell. Awesome job Larry.
US Blues cooked (have video) and the jam into Golden Road was very nice too. Iko, wasnt really Iko until the audience deemed it so. Watching Phil and Jackie after Golden road, they were making gestures towards each other that resembled "what are we playing?" and the other saying "i have no idea"- thats when Jackie turned to the audience and SARCASTICALLY said "do you guys know this one?" and everyone just started singing Iko- but no verses which was a problem. Just hey now hey now, and giacomofeenanay. Was fun, and funny.
Playin was playin- nice and green and blue and mellow (have video)
The Wheel cooked, Jackie flubs lines left and right but who cares. Standing on the Moon was poignant, and of course, that thought goes thru your mind for a split-second that says "Jerry didnt sing it like that" but you quickly realize that noone will sing that song like Ole Jer.
Unbroken Chain was just that. Fine. For all we know, that was a rehearsal version.
Sugar Mag was a nice rollicking cherry on top of the night.
Phil was dropping um, how we say, bombs, left and right as usual, and he just drowns out Jackie, but hey thats life! Maybe because im on Larrys side of stage.
Another rock solid performance by Phil and his merry clan. Ok will post some video soon.
Seeya tomorrow!
I was really, really disappointed with the sound tonight. I tried to find a sweet spot and just couldn't. Unlike other nights, the PA over the seats towards the rear was so out of tune that there was almost a delay (or lack thereof) and it sounded to me like they were sometimes a half-a-beat off. Larry and Molo seemed out of synch. At one point it sounded like they were running the monitor mix through the PA. Jackie's vocals were tinny and distant sounding, and Larry's guitar was waaaaaayyy too loud. I normally love Larry's playing and tone, but not tonight. It was overpowering, and because of the sound/PA issues, there were times it sounded like he was playing too loud and not listening to the band. This "effect" seemed to be much better when I ventured Front of Board and even behind the board but dead-center.
Anyone else notice anything unusual?
I actually heard a great sound. I was against the rail, Phil's bass sounded great, it was clear and perfect in the balance, I thought Larry and everyone else was great in the mix too.
I thought this was an amazing show. I have to say my favorite part was the Help On The Way>Slipknot!>Eyes Of The World, Phil gave a nice little speech before too. I really thought they played some amazing music tonight, I really hope to make it another show of the run.
Really great show. Loved every minute. Sound was absolutely fine on the floor (FOB). At the start Phil said words to the effect that we (the audience/fans) deserved some of the credit for the historical election results.
Help>Slip was very tight but not really long. Eyes...who could ask for anything more from a show opener? How Sweet was great to hear with Jackie & Theresa sharing Jackie's mic and alternating vocals. The sentimental highlight for me in set I was Built to Last. Not sure when the last one was played but I certainly haven't heard one for about 15 years.
Cookin' opening to II! I'm pretty sure US Blues segued into Golden Road without stopping Note: the IKO-IKO was only one verse and that was sung by the audience. They jammed and jammed in a bo diddley vein until the IKO became distinct. Then that went on for a while until Jackie went up to the mic and said to the audience, rather timidly, "do you know this one?" Then the crowd started singing. Very funny.
Playin'>Jam>Wheel was very tight and fun. The Playin' wasn't so long, but what was there was tasty. Other than a premature chorus entry by Jackie, the Wheel was really nice and seemed long and well jammed. SOTM was the set II equivalent of BTL in I. Another sentimental puller at the old heart strings. Unbroken Chain, which can sometimes fall apart, was, once again, really tight and well played. Only Larry on guitar, Jackie played keyboards. Sugar Magnolia was as good a version as I have heard from this band.
To introduce Dancin', Phil mentioned the election results again and how, right out in Times Square, people had been Dancin' in The Streets in celebration on election eve....
I was pretty close to the stage all night (and for the two shows before this one as well). Phil is going to need a cheek transplant next he's smiling so much. He is just having such a good time up there playing with this band. It's such a pleasure just to watch him having so much fun.
I was worried when I got tickets to seven shows..."what if the band's not together," or "what if I'm not digging it?" These fears have proven unfounded thus far. I've been getting nothing but enjoyment from them and I'm very happy I have more shows to come!
WHOSE GOT AN EXTRA FOR THIS SATURDAY???

I too really enjoyed the show. Setlist was excellent.
It was neither flawless nor mind-bending but the band put out good vibes all night.
Not particularly memorable but thoroughly enjoyable from start to finsish.
Nice surprises. Help>Slip>Eyes was very well done. How Sweet It Is was sweet. Built to last and Standing On The Moon were poingent and well done. Nice ending of Sugar Magnolia and the capper for me was the encore. I always seem to miss that song whether it was the GD or Phil. Didn't expect it -- two Motown songs in a show but it was fitting given the excitement that endures after the election.
Phil's wrap at the open of the show was very cool. I could here every word and it set the tone for the night.
No complaints. Made the mistake of standing behind the tapers who were guarding their turf with gusto.
great reviews by all...i was there last night and i had a blast...good vibe, phil is clearly having a great time!!!
LONG LIVE PHIL LESH !!!!!
"Unlike other nights, the PA over the seats towards the rear was so out of tune that there was almost a delay (or lack thereof) and it sounded to me like they were sometimes a half-a-beat off."
I noticed that last year and will never locate myself in the seats again...floor and SBD level is where it's at...
Hey now.
If it's Aiko - you got have the "A" first!
I can't quite articulate it, but seeing the set list I feel some sort of theme was being played out (esp. in set 1), perhaps related to the election. Anyone who was there care to confirm/deny/elaborate?
Rich.....I think you are correct. There was a sene of "joy" last night. Phil started the show fefering to the election and the Help o the way was a reflection of that. U.S. Blues is a no brainer and the encore again a reference by Phil as to the celebration ad partying he had never seen before resulting in a Dancing in the streets.
Your theme concept is on the money from where I was standing.
i love the theme of this show: CELEBRATION!
phil mentioned what a great time this was and called the election of Obama the most significant in our lifetimes. the songs thematically covered renewing, growth, change, and just dancing in the streets!
Phil was obviously having a blast, his bass was WAY high in the mix, on built to last he was practically playing lead, right over the guitars.
beautiful music, beautiful vibes, my name is chris, if kat, jeannete and her boyfriend or those two young ladies whom i met up front in the middle find this email me! cshum372@kutztown.edu
Thanx Rob and gang for All that you do!!! -so kind.
Hope you Catts are havin' fun! ;)
Lovelight! Bring on the Pig!!! I'm hopin' for a OverSeas Stomp Next Time they're in Chicago. (a girl can dream)
Glorious energy all the way through. Phil in ecstasy during SOTM and from where I was standing, dominant in the mix all night. Of course, I was standing directly in front of his woofers LOL
That is my absolute favorite thing...when I can hear each and every note Phil plays. Larry was a bit too loud for me at times, especially in the upper registers, and when he and Jackie went at it I had to cover my ears a few times. But otherwise I thought the sound was even better than usual--got some keyboards which are rare on the Nokia rail.
Larry played a particularly good show I thought. He really seems to be stretching himself.
The band "let" the audience sing the first choruses of Aiko-Aiko, but unfortunately we couldn't seem to manage the verses LOL
Personally, I thought about Jerry even more than usual (especially considering that he wrote only 8 of the 16 tunes of the night). "How Sweet It Is" was one of his favorite songs, and of course he would have flown on the Eyes.
But you know...during the Eyes it occurred to me that since Tuesday night, I've been feeling better about this country, and about the world in general, than I have since he died. For the very first time I was able to feel completely joyful that he lived and that we have the legacy of the music he wrote, without immediately also feeling tremendous pain that he's gone.
Wow, who'd-a thought Barack Obama could do that?! ;-)
I was there last night, and they just flat out rocked.
the Help>slipkont>eyes was like nothing i've ever heard before and then how sweet it is was beautiful.
all in all a tremendous show, the energy inside the nokia last night was palpable.
So far i was at 10/31 and 11/1 and last night, and i think last night blew the other two out of the water. Just good to see the guys having fun.
**
The jerk behind me yelled "ALLIGATOR!!" every 30 seconds no matter what the band was actually playing.
And the people next to me yakked through every jam, segue, intro, etc., attempting to talk OVER the music. They only shut up when words were actually being sung. I cannot fathom why somebody would fly across the country for a show only to get shitfaced drunk immediately, stand directly in front of the band, and not pay attention to a single fucking note.
Fortunately for me, it was fairly easy to ignore all of those people. But just a few feet farther from the stage, they would have impacted my night significantly. And not in a good way.
Delia.....Been to 10/31, 11/1 and last night and 11/6 was best by far the best all round show. Throughout all three shows I bounced around the venue searching for the sound. Last night started the show in dead center about 10 rows in front of Phil. Sound was good but it is coming from mostly the PA and the mix is kind of a bit murky. Went back to the area in front of the sounboard ( near the tapers) and it was much better. Clean and crisp. I do love being in front of the band and seeing the intercommunication between band members but sound wise ..... mid section is my favorte.
PS....IMHO sound upstairs directly behind the soundboard (Goldenrd seating) is pretty good but moving higher can not compare.
Sometimes we live no
particular way but our own
Sometimes we visit your country
and live in your home
Sometimes we ride on your horses
Sometimes we walk alone
Sometimes the songs that we hear
are just songs of our own
THANK YOU PHIL!
I just remembered, Phil blew Jackie a kiss at the end of Standing On The Moon. You could tell he was so appreciative of playing it again after all these years.
Awwww, how Sweet that Uncle Phil is - XoXo
Yowzers, this run sounds like a Blast!!! Good 2 hear
Phil also introduced Jackie as "the guy who lights a fire under my ass"...to which I add: thank G*d!
;-)
Look.....if they'd have just stage monitors and get rid of the ear monitors it would be like the old daze and the sound would come from the stage and not just the speakers. But then how would Phil give directions?
My son, Michael, and I trekked all the way from Newcastle, England, to see this show, on the basis that I doubt that Phil will ever perform on the our side of the Atlantic (although hope springs eternal). Unfortunately it was the only show we could catch – combination of flights, work (!) and shows that were already sold out really narrowed our options.
Before making a couple of comments about the show, I want to thank firstly, Grady, for his advice on how to get a good position in the Nokia (I tried to e-mail you Grady, but the message kept bouncing back). Standing at the rail, just along from the tapers, was tremendous – view and sound were both excellent and, as a bonus I got some really good photos. Secondly, thanks to all the people we met while waiting in line and then in the Nokia – it was great talking to you and you made us feel really at home.
So…what about the show? From the outset we realised that, being the first post-election show it was going to be something special – and we weren’t wrong – absolutely upbeat, non stop dancing/partying/celebrating- Phil has described how he is trying to achieve a theme each night and he certainly succeeded on Thursday. It was very clear to me that songs take on new significance in Obama-land. For example, standing at the rail I had a great view of the crowd below and I doubt very much whether the “Wave that flag” line in U.S. Blues would have drawn such a “punching the air” response a few days earlier!
Two songs that really captured the positive moment and mood for me were How Sweet It Is and Golden Road (not bad, when you consider that a song that was celebrating the SF scene over 40 years ago is still an appropriate way of commemorating a special event). These were highlights for me, but there were many others such as the rip-roaring double barrelled opener of Help>Eyes and the audience sing-along-with-Jackie version of Aiko Aiko.
On a personal level, I said to Michael before the show started that I would go away happy if I could see one of two songs – the spacey version of Mountains of the Moon that the band has been cooking up this year, or Unbroken Chain…..so I went away happy. I’ve loved that song since Mars Hotel and it still hits the spot! I was especially pleased that Phil managed the upper range vocals successfully (“floats like a feather….”) and I like the extended Larry coda, reminding me at times of David Gilmour (how’s that for an English perspective??).
Do I have any regrets? Of course – when the band has such a huge pool of songs to draw from there are bound to be disappointments. I would really liked to have seen Larry play a greater selection of instruments (especially mandolin and fiddle) and to have seen either Dark Star or the Other One would have been exceptional, but at least I can compensate by listening to the tapers’ output – and there are the soundboards to look forward to.
We are very envious of those of you who are lucky enough to catch the rest of the run – I’m looking forward to following progress on this site.
It's unbelievable that Lesh is so taken in by this Obama nonsense. Didn't he ever hear "Won't Get Fooled Again"? Didn't he notice that Obama's first appointment was a seriously pro-war Democrat?
"But you know...during the Eyes it occurred to me that since Tuesday night, I've been feeling better about this country, and about the world in general, than I have since he died. Yes, and he cured my arthritis as well! I can walk again, I can walk again!
