Started one! Last night was great. Much better than last Sunday. Maybe has to do with being on the floor instead of in the seats and having more freedom to partake of the whole experience and meeting some FUN folks.
Peace, Bob

I'm hoping it's not too chatty and cramped in there tonight - but Saturday shows are always a party.

Back in black
I hit the sack
Gone so long I'm glad to be back
Yes, I'm gettin' loose
From the noose
You gotta catch me if you want me to hang
I've been looking at the sky
'Cause it's gettin' me high
Forget the hearse 'cause I never die
I got nine lives
Cat size
Usin' every one of them and I'm runnin' wild
CHORUS:
'Cause I'm back
Yes, I'm back
Well, I'm back
Yes, I'm back
Well, I'm back, back
(Well) I'm back in black
Yes, I'm back in black

Back in black
Of a Cadillac
Number one with a bullet, I'm a power pack
Yes, I'm in a band
With a gang
They've got to catch me if they want me to hang
Cause I'm back on the track
And I'm beatin' the flack
Nobody's gonna get me on another rap
So look at me now
I'm just makin' my play
Don't try to push your luck, just get out of my way
CHORUS
Well, I'm back, Yes I'm back
Well, I'm back, Yes I'm back
Well, I'm back, back
Well I'm back in black
Yes I'm back in black
Hooo yeah
Ohh yeah
Yes I am
Oooh yeah, yeah Oh yeah
Back in now
Well I'm back, I'm back
Back, I'm back
Back, I'm back
Back, I'm back
Back, I'm back
Back
Back in black
Yes I'm back in black
Out of the sight

i got myself to the front and center, somehow everybody let me through. it was awesome. got some of phil's sweat on me - broke out a bottle, scooped up his sweat and now i'll have it forever.

anyway, that's not the big news. the real big news is that i saw the setlist on the floor and - lo and behold - there was "my brother esau" listed on it as the encore. understandably, i was psyched. but imagine my sadness when all they could do it break out a viola lee blues.

oh well, there's always tomorrow - it never knows.

Incredible show. Might not look so great on paper set list wise if I didn't experience it - but everyting was played full o' heart.

Fantastic Wharf rat - deep deep Cumberland with a sloooow verse "lot o' poor man make a five dolla bill...." then right back in - Phil Beaming.

Thak You Phil.

New Jackie tune awesome lyrics - nice groove...

"Surprise,surorise,
he's not a diamond in the rough.
hes a demon in disguise...."

Great time. Thanks all.

Damn Doctor Trip - that is a bummer - but your take on it is deep and makes one reflect for sure.

Then again - its only a disorderly Conduct charge and chances are if you contest it - Officer Sam won't even show up in court and it wil be dismissed - especially if you recount the tale exactly as you have done on your site.

Peace to you and may you have a worthwile and revealing meditation.

Lost of fun tonight again. Theme for the show: slowwww. A lot of slow tunes. Loan Me A Dime was slow. They played one of the verses in Cumberland slow (to interesting effect). The New Speedway was very slow.

Yes, Jackie was sitting for New Speedway>W. Rat. During the New Speedway he started to tease Nobody's Fault and then I could see him mouth it to Phil but Phil just wanted New Speedway. Jackie sang a little snippet of Nobody's anyway and then went right back in to Speedway.

The Cumberland and JB Goode in I were decent, but you had a lot of "watchers" in the crowd. Judging by the energy they were putting out they could have just as easily been watching a taping of Oprah. My formative Grateful Dead experiences taught me there's much truth in the saying "you get out what you put in." I just know the music would be taken to higher levels if there was more energy from the audience spurring on the musicians.

Anyway, II was so much fun. China Cat again, but this time with 2 electric guitars. Very nice. OMSN was a big surprise to me and, while not perfect, was pretty good. Nice jam>a very good Born Cross-Eyed>Space>a typically rockin' Elevator. Very good jam after the New Speedway as I recall. Wharf Rat was very good. As usual, Jackie read some of the lyrics prematurely. However, he seemed to really be trying to get the phrasing right (now if only someone would play him a tape of Sugaree so he could learn how that one is supposed to go...). Watchtower was solit. Know you Rider is so overplayed I can't really comment objectively. It's getting to be a bathroom song for me.

Viola was raging. Some HeartBreaker (I think) teases in it.

Another super solid show from this group.

Thanks so much for hooking me up with the ticket yesterday, Royce.

>>>Where is "Elevator from?
I believe it's a tune from Molitz' band, Particle.

The detailed review will probably come tomorrow. It's a quarter after 3AM and I need some rest. But if I had to describe the show in short, it would be "non-stop energy!" The band came out of the gates on all cylinders and didn't let up til the end of the Viola Lee encore.

The second set featured the extended jams and seamless segues I'd been hoping for last night. I got repeats of the songs I really wanted to hear from from 11/2 show I missed: "Elevator" and "China Cat"

The contrast between the fast-paced tech-y dance throwndown of "Elevator" and the super slow "New Speedway" that followed was mindblowingly intense.

And in the first set the Cumberland Blues was superb. Molo tore up the toms and double bass pedal and the "lotta poor man make a $5 bill" verse was done unexpectedly in a very slow Allman Bros blues style only to snap back into the fast paced hoedown we know and love to end the song.

And yes, I heard the Heartbreaker riff played during the
Viola Lee encore

I got to meet Jilluvslife and Jenny Jenkins from here on the Zone. We had a great little dancefloor going! And it was lovely to run into cute blonde radiant dancing Amy from NJ, who I met at the Phil/GRAB shows of'06

Dr Trip,

Very much a bummer for you. I'm glad it was not worse. If those guys arrested you and brought you downtown and you spent the weekend in the tombs it would have been far worse.
The best course of action when faced with people like that is to "yes sir, no sir" them and then say a prayer for them later, but odds are they are beyond hope. You can't win.

Sounded like a great show!

VERY disappointed in last night's show. Did'nt care for the song selection (It's not Shecky Greene & Friends), TOO SLOW (New Speedway was played at a snail's pace), and no flow......they even blew coming back into Viola Lee after the monster crescendo. A real clunker imho.

fitzman, your "shecky greene" comments are deeply offensive, at least to me, but i guess that's your point...

to quote phil from the other night: jackie is..."the man who lights a fire under my ass."

so why don't you pick on the main man himself if you need to be so rude?

my 1st phil and friends show. Went by myself and chatted up with a few "Philheads" who told me that his shows are the real deal. Luckily i was NOT dissapointed!!!!
SHOCKED they broke into Loan me a Dime! I listen to the Duane/Pickett version alllll the time at home so to hear this song live was amazing.
Cumberland, New Speedway, Wharf Rat, and of course Viola Lee all satified my appetite.
Had a great time, ran into old friends and made some new ones (especially while waiting in line to get in).
My 1st show but CERTAINLY won't be my last!

Last night WAS super slow, but it was crazy fun.
AFter all the others, I say we deserved a slow night. It was kinda nice to just hang back and chill a bit. I got handed a setlist too, and despite the fact they canned the Ripple encore, Viola Lee was pretty, well...amazing. Sweet sweet sweet. See ya'll tonight! What an unbelievably gorgeous day outside in NYC.
Damn.

Will he FOR SURE be at Tuesday's show??
I asked my friend to ask him this yesterday, but have not heard back yet.

great show. i loved watching the lady who does the sign-language thing - she was having a ball last night.

the one small thing that bothered me (besides the absence of esau) was the amount of time jackie spent fiddling around to the side of the stage. i guess he had to take a pee break at one point, but before that there was a lot of time with him futzing around. what's the deal? anybody know what the problem(s) may have been?

Wasn't it Keyshawn who coined the nickname ??

And Mandala, if you're honestly offended by Fitzman's remarks, you clearly haven't noticed his opinion since the beginning of this particular line-up.

Personally, I'm surprised Comrade Fitzman's still going to see this band.

For that, his Native American name must be "Still Has Hope".

Dude = hes smoking cigarrettes over there.

If he realy wants to channel Jerry - hes gotta huff 'em down in two puffs like the fat man used to and then get his guitar right back on.

Jackie was awesome last night.

in general, my opinion is that people who are disappointed by this music are usually disappointed because they have personal expectations that they wish TO IMPOSE upon the music - when those preexisting expectations are not met, they feel let down

but to really get high off the music, you have to have no expectations - let the music take you somewhere - it is in letting go of the expectations that you can get turned on in some new way

SO MUCH FUN being in the front... the key is to wait until they finish a song or get into a slow jam, and people start going on beer runs... then you can go forward through the channels they made and get right up close to the band... I had my first-ever "Phil looked right at me!" moment last night.

This band continues to amaze. The synergy on their stage is like almost nothing else. Could a band have more fun on stage?!?! Schoolgirl was as crunchy and bluesy as could be. Good Lovin', as always, happy-go-dancin', setting the tone. Hollywood was very enjoyable and really strong. Very cool song. Loose Lucy is my delight! SLMD...was it me or was that just totally smokin'?! Cumby > JBG...holy rippingness!! The slowdown during Cumberland was a first for me and after the blistering jams just prior, offered a way for them to build back up into a frenzy that launched into JBG that was mock 10 from start to finish. The place was rocking and dancing and giggin' down hard!
The entire second set was possibly the strongest set of the 8 sets I've seen this run. China Cat. Don't have to explain that. Saturday Night was in the best spot in the set it could have been and set the tone for pure smoke from there on out. Born Cross eyed was perfect ending in another jammy jam jam jam into the sweatiest spinning Elevator I've heard. This tune us off the charts if you like to dance! I think the 100 people closest to me were all completely melted down by the perfectly tempo'd and powerful Wharf Rat. Jackie's got this one DOWN! What next???? What could they do? Oh, how about a rip snortin' blistering Watchtower to completely blow the roof off the place followed ever so perfectly by the second piece of delicious bread for the China Cat Second Set Sandwich!! The second tier, left side of the floor was in full motion raging dancing jumping smiling hugging giggin' down!!! Huge energy. Just pure energy. Viola Lee encore.... just when you thought it couldn't keep going that strong. This show smoked!! Thanks to all the phreaks and amazing energy and vibe going on where we were last night!!!!
See you soon....

it's strange and wonderful thing that opinions of this show have varied so greatly. Some are calling it the best show of the run so far (I'm in that camp as of right now, though this is pending hearing the tape to confirm what I heard in person) while others are calling it slow and disappointing. I thought the flow was perfect, though some one here called it disjointed.
Totally glowing after the show, I ran into my buddy in the hall. He said, "tonight was good but Friday night was better!" Meanwhile, I thought the exact opposite.
There's no clear right or wrong. It's such a subjective thing, though I often don't understand where people are coming from with their opinions. As the saying goes "One man gathers what another man spills."
But the cheers from the crowd after hot songs, solos, and after the show suggested the crowd overall was pretty damn excited on Saturday night.
While a lot of people here have called the show "slow," I don't understand that. I mean there were 2 notably slow moments that everyone noticed: the oddball section in Cumberland and the snail's pace Speedway, but that accounted for about 10 minutes of a 3 hour show. I thought all the other songs were played at their normal tempos and second set was pretty fast-paced.
And as I said previous, I thought the slow segments had a brilliant contrast effect coloring the rest of the set

As for Jackie's vocal delivery: yeah, sometimes i get the sense that he's reading it straight off his cuesheets without a strong idea of phrasing, but other times I think he's trying to "make the song his own." Us Deadheads know Jerry's "correct" delivery by heart so when Jackie deviates from that, and we can't sing along, then it hits us as bad. But Jackie is a born bandleader, I don't think he wants to sing like Jerry. He wants to sing like Greene. I think Phil hired him because he has a unique style of playing and singing coming from outside the jam/GD scene. When it comes to technical skill, I think Larry eclipses Jackie, but Jackie's sense of "feeling" can run circles around that of Larry. I'm glad they're both in the band.
That said, I thought Jackie was really struggling to sing the part of Wharf Rat that came before "I'll get up and fly away" it seemed as if he didn't know how to fit the words into the instrumental lines. But his stumbling delivery really worked (coincidentally?) with the theme of the song. The song is about struggling to recover from addiction and bad luck. And the hesitant delivery of that section, while frustrating in the moment, seemed to make the "Fly away" part soar even higher.
Hopefully, it'll still sound like that when I hear it as a recording :-)

The venue, and the staff struck me as really cool at Saturday's show. They finally got the entrance line under control and I was able to walk right in at 7:15. The pat-down was really gentle and the guy who did it was friendly. Inside the theatre, security seemed really laid back in my section--- stage left, near the front. The guy told folks to just hold off from puffing until the second set, AFTER the Lion King let out in the theatre on the other side of the wall. And I heard reports that folks caught smoking and toking elsewhere were just given a warning the first time they were caught. I didn't see anyone get thrown out. I'm sure a least a couple people got bounced, but the vibe seemed friendly, the staff didn't seem like our adversaries. It reminded me of the early 00s at the Beacon.
And the icing on the cake about the Nokia, on top of the good sound and sight lines was that I noticed they had speakers in the rest room right above the urinals. I had to run out during Loan Me A Dime to pee and it was really nice to still feel connected to the music, because I could still hear it.

I'm looking forward to Friday night at the Nokia in "the speaker room" section.

And I'll cop to being a little jealous of him. I don't think he's any better of a songwriter than I am.

>>does anyone have any clue who those girls were that came on stage at the end?

No - assume they were friends of Jackie's/random hot girls backstage -- but the whole sequence was pretty funny. Almost right out of the gate of Viola Lee I thought Jackie was urgently trying to summon his guitar tech for some problem, but he was just coaxing out the young ladies to join him around his keyboard. The priceless part was Phil's expressions that followed a progression of 1) hard double-take head-shake, 2) momentary "mock disapproval", and then 3) a resolution of a sort of grandfatherly "well, kids will be kids, let's rock this out" smile...

Saturday was an odd but at the end of the day satisfying show. The first set was concise and crisp and well-played with a great song selection, though with excessive breaks, without much in the way of flow, and an oddly-muted lack of crowd energy up front. The Cumberland was as noted by others very strong and notable for the super-cool slow-down segment -- genuinely interesting musically, not just novelty.

2nd set however was brimming with unexpected rewards from this band -- a lineup that while possessing many stellar attributes lacks (as many have noted here) a certain "psychedelic orientation". The whole sequence of the highly atypical jam out of OMSN through the Born Cross-Eyed and the subsequent jam was completely captivating. I see Phil frequently enough these that I don't really listen to a lot of recent recordings, but I'll definitely want to hear this segment again. I wouldn't go so far as to say that the jams were "organically collaborative" but there was enough wiggle within the jam structures to make it interesting. Elevator was great fun; the deliberations out of the super-slow-mo New Speedway jam were far from run-of-the-mill; the Wharf Rat was spectacular. Watchtower and IKYR were well played if a little rote, and the Viola Lee just killed. A roller coaster set but in a good way... the overall vibe went counter to more typically "Saturday night" crowd-pleasing formulations.

I've only gone to 11.7 and 11.8 thus far, had a better visceral/buzz/party time on Friday but felt far more musically satisfied with last night's 2nd set.

Looking forward to next weekend! Mad props to all the swell people we were chatting up before/between sets up front on Jackie's side.

Obligatory complaint: $4 for a HALF bottle of water? Dude.

Bonus surprise: I didn't once over two nights have a close encounter with anyone smoking a cigarette. Human evolution, gotta love it.

>>$4 for a HALF bottle of water? Dude.

it's one dollar for the actually liquid and 3 for the custom "Phil and Friends" novelty label.

Here's a tip for water: find an empty water bottle on the floor (believe me, there are more than enough). Bring it to the bathroom, wash it out in the sink with soap and water, fill it up at the water fountain and BAM! cold water for $0. Save money and the environment! This is what I do at most shows.

the band is a lot less consistent than during the nokia run last year. I was at the Thurs and Sat shows and while there were certainly moments, overall I found both to be underwhelming. and the JG dancing girls, what a joke, can't believe Phil put up with that.

I think this version of the band is coming down the home stretch and expect Phil to mix it up again soon -- Molo stays -- everyone else is tradable.

I didn't realize so many people are not fans of the band line up...But aside from that, I was really surprised about the female following - I mean it would have been fine if they weren't like 15, isn't Jackie like 20 something? That was the only disturbing part. Ok I guess one could be Jackies, another one or two someone's daughters, but there were like 4 or 5 which was odd. It was like a kings of leon show or something... But if they were all Jackie's then, maybe I'm the only one but I lose a bit of respect for him hanging out with such a made up crowd.

actually Anna I loved what they were doing last year, had it all going on. but they are much less consistent now and I think Jackie has regressed, not progressed. Jackie blowing lines all over the place, tentative, dancing girls, etc...

...it's just time for a new look. JMO.

having said all that, Larry was really impressive Saturday, knew all his lines and sang them well - imagine that! and the guitar work, well...

I do feel that last year the first sets were jammier with less free falls. I went out R, F, and S and have almost come to expect the first/second sets to be black/white. Very different. I still have at least 3 more shows, so we'll see how it goes. I agree with Grubby about having expectations, which I don't and am just grateful to see them play. I hope I hear dark star this year! Why are so many people harping on Jackie for this? It sounds like it was just a spontaneous celebratory move on his part to invite them out. It didn't seem like the music suffered as a result. So I don't understand why it matters so much. If you found it distracting, it would make sense just to close your eyes or look towards the Molitz side of the stage instead.
I was in an obscured view area during the encore and didn't even hear about the dancing girls til after the show. Just hearing the song with my ears it just sounded like good old Phil and Friends.
Remember the leader of this band had Barney the Purple Dinosaur take his place for a song during a GD show in the early 90s, so weird visual things onstage are not unprecedented

A preview of the coming administration: you are not allowed to have a negative opinion ("Barack won't allow you to be cynical anymore") and we will hunt you down if you do. Just ask Joe.

I was at the show, my sixth over the past year with this line up. I had front row Golden Road seats so the sound and view were excellent. I wasn't that impressed with last night and haven't been impressed with any of the shows over the past year. And that included two shows with front row center seats. Jackie might be what Phil wants in his band, but he's not what I want to hear in Phil's band. And that opinion is shared by every one of my friends that have been touring since the early 70's. The tone of this band is too harsh, there are no "smooth" moments like every other line up Phil has ever had. The guitar tones of Larry and Jackie are too similar and do not offer enough variation. Larry always sounds better with someone like Scofield or Barry taking some of the leads, it allows him to concentrate on coloring the music with interesting fills. Jackie is a competent player and singer but nothing special. I've seen a ton of guys in local bars that are better players, singers, and writers. That's just my educated opinion after 35 years in this scene, I hope I'm still allowed to have it. Not once in the six shows that I've seen with him in the past year did he play or sing anything that made my ears stand up or my jaw drop. That use to happen EVERY night with the Q and most nights with the '05 and '06 lineups. There have been very few times that I have thought I was hearing a conversation among this line up, and that includes the 20 or so shows I have on disc. At this point I am gladly giving up my seat on the bus for those who like what is currently being offered; it isn't my cup of tea.

When can I expect the thought police to come for me?

Fitzman, sorry I didn't catch up with you last night.

I should add that the one highpoint of almost every show I've seen or heard with this lineup is Cumberland Blues; they kill it every time. But the Q could do that as well (like Hershey Park '01).

"guitarist and keyboardist Jackie Greene, whose voice suggests a compromise between the Grateful Dead’s two main singers, Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir" Now that one should stir up some thoughts around here!

"His [Phil] playing was the positive counterweight to his voice, pale and inexpressive, and the fact that at 68 he leaves much less to chance as a bandleader than he once did. ...reads his lyrics off a prompter." Good job pointing that out ben, I'm sure he couldn't remember them otherwise (sarcasm)

But the bottom line is while I am very open to other bands, or just random run ins with great musicians at bars and halls, there's something about artists like Phil who collectively represent an untouchable, abstract genre of truly great music that fills the hearts of people from all walks of life - and in the end, I think that's what really matters.

I hear you Tom. I have attended several shows (sans Nokia) with this lineup, and I generally agree with your assessment....but no way am I off the bus.

I'm attending 11-18 and am hoping Barry will be there and will be given the latitude to take more leads and make things more interesting.

We are considering the Golden Road upgrade. Can you tell me more about it? How was the sound from there? I understand it is just behind the board. Is it elevated on a second level? Please let me know.

and i think to be fair, tom, everybody gets what you are saying... jackie is slowly getting acclimated to the psycedelia that is phil... and there is an adjustment period there.

however, things are much more extended then they were last fall and it's still a party... and you gotta appreciate the extra songs in the rotation...

in all honesty, it took me a while to be down there, look up and be able to give myself to little jackie. i'm okay with it now, though.

in fact, i think i might have licked him post show yesterday. can't quite remember ;)

I was really disappointed that Barry was not at the show I had a chance to attend, I think that it would have made a big difference for me.

I appreciate that Phil is trying new things, I'm just not getting the charge from this line up that I have from all of the past ones.

Hey, Ben Ratliff is a friend of mine. Don't diss his review!
LOL, just kidding, though he is a friend of mine. He actually is quite knowledgeable about the GD all the way back. He knows a lot about music. Duh!!!!

I agree his review was probably more boring than some people find this band.

He was impressed by how Warren was able to lay back and blend in, for a change. And of course the Death Don't was awesome. No holding back there.

Of the two shows I went to (Fri & Sat),I enjoyed the Saturday show far far more. I am wondering if the candy some lady offered me during set 1 had anything to do with it.

i'm not saying you can't disagree or have your own opinion, everyone is entitled to one, it seems there is a lot of bashing here. just my observation.

Expressing a valid opinion without malice is not "bashing". You folks need to get out in the real world a bit more if you think it is. When I have loved what Phil was doing I said so, and when I haven't I've said so. You could just as easily (in fact, IMO, more easily) say that there are a lot of folks posting here who are willing to accept whatever Phil does without any thought or criticism. Just because it's being done by Phil Lesh doesn't mean that it is necessarily perfect, and in fact I would think that he would be the first to agree. Weir used to say that he wished that folks would run them out of town on a rail after a bad show instead of giving blind and uncritical devotion. I saw a lot of shows where that was the case back in the day, and I happen to agree.

Interplanetary, Sorry about Ben, but as I mentioned, I applaud his effort. He was after all trying to convey the Phil experience to a Times audience.

This is the first time I've ever followed a review strain for one particular show so intensely, it's very fun. I think those of us who have been, let's call it "participatory" in this review should all get together in a big group after the next show when we're all drunk/else and tingling with excitement and awe and then see who's got something to say besides "Wow, do you remember..." or "OMG Phil, dude"! lol

I'm with many of the heads I know out there who have been On the Bus for 25+ years and think this is the hottest Phil lineup yet! It's pure rippin' smoke every night! Jackie kills it and the clear relationship between he and Phil and the rest of the band appears so incredibly special. Totally diggin' Jackie's song writing and love his phrasing of the Dead tunes. Warren could pull it off with his vocals and phrasing and Jackie pulling it off to in his own way. They're 40 years apart in age and we're so lucky to be experiencing this amazing bond between Phil & Jackie. Larry is the man. Not many guys out there as diversly talented he is. These guys get it!!!

Howdy Keith. Next time.

To be fair, I have to admit that the set list Saturday was, for me, the least interesting of the past few nights. Especially the second half of the second set. I would have probably enjoyed myself more Sunday or Tuesday based on what was played, but I still have issues with he overall tonality of the band and the lack of two hot guitarists.

Hot as in female's?

Sorry Tom but this lineup as well as other combination's that Phil has pieced together over the years, sound & play very well in their respective moments.

A long time ago while emerging as a human being and influenced by a constant change in music, I took in each show as its' own performance. This way there is no way to compare any given get-together.

Any time we are able to get in a show, "There All Good"!!!

Hot as in having a unique chemistry that transcends normal musical boundaries. You have your opinion and I have mine. Yes, they have their moments (listen to any Cumberland Blues this lineup has done for instance) but they are fewer and farther between then previous lineups. That is obvious by reading the reviews which use to be extensive and glowing. You're lucky to get two complete reviews anymore, the majority of comments these days are simply "I had a great time". That doesn't mean that it was a great show. Larry is incredibly talented but without another "snake music" guitar player in the band to compliment him (why do you think Barry is playing guitar all of a sudden?) his talents aren't being used to their best advantage. He was much more effective with Barry or Scofield as his partner. And not to beat a dead horse, but Jackie is a run of the mill musician. He doesn't play badly, but he doesn't play anything inspired either. He has the basic blues licks down, but that's about it. There are guys in every town in this country that can play as well as he does. The thing that has made earlier incarnations of Phil's band special is the combination of better then average musicians. Jackie is a good utility player for a band; he can sing and play competently. His songs are ok but not great (he's no John Hiatt or Ryan Adams). But he is an average guitar player at best. The interplay of the guitars is what I have always loved about Dead music and for a number of reasons (similar guitar tones being one, Weir says that he always tried to have a distinct tone from Jerry) this band isn't hitting that spot for me. This line up does not create a weave, it relies on the tried and true blues format of having one player do leads over a backing beat with the occasional dueling guitar work. And the lack of a full bodied keyboard sound doesn't help. If you like Led Zeppelin, this band is for you. I never did. All I know is that after a year of seeing this lineup live I have yet to walk out of a show glowing.

And I really don't understand why people have to be so defensive about some folks not being thrilled by this line up.

Let me clear my throat: I'm tired of these old farts that can't stand for someone to say that the show sucked. Whoever else wants to tell people their comments are "offensive" when all they said was they didn't like the show can go bite a Boards Head 1/4 lb hot dog. If any of you care to check the widespread/phish boards, like phantasytour.com a good chunk of the reviews are bad or cynical ones, and as long as people aren't like "TREY SUX" or "JIMI SUX" people are cool with other peoples feelings whether they be cynical or not. Phil shows have literally gone from the best to less the subpar and its pathetic that no one will speak up about it, and when someone else does people make them feel ostracized. So Melvin, I'm on your side bro, Mandala its not cool to tell people they are offensive when you are actually being the toolbox. Everytime someone like me or Melvin posts criticism that is actually constructive 99% of the time you turn around and cry about it like a little schoolgirl. You should want constructive criticism on here, nothing gets fixed or felt out otherwise. People should express the way they feel because its obviously real, Mandala wants this board to be like a Chinese history textbook, where only the good side of things gets reported and the bad stuff is taken out completely. Sorry but Jackie is really not that good all together, he's fun, he seems like a nice guy, I guess he's got some cool hats, but his guitar playing doesn't fit in the band. I'm sure Mandala I bet you weren't at Glens Falls when Trey came on and showed Jackie how to stop breast feeding, it was like night and day how good that show was compared to the rest. And you others who say this is the best lineup yet, obviously you never saw the quintet and thats the end of that comment, I shouldn't even have to dabble in that one. All of this is very real and its great that someone has the balls to stand up to the majority on this board that don't care how bad the show sucked and say its good regardless. So Melvin and the other 1 or two who kept it real in a constructive way, I got mad respect for you and I agree with you to the T, and thanks for posting your criticism, I don't find it offensive. Mandala you want someone to pick on the main dude, fine, you asked for it, the setlists are lackluster and its obvious they are being written for people that can't handle heavy segues. Good enough?

>>And I really don't understand why people have to be so defensive about some folks not being thrilled by this line up.

Indeed it is unfortunate that this forum shuns -- for the most part -- the intelligent exchange of diverse opinions on Dead music. You would think that a more solid majority of folks would be able to appreciate the difference between a "discussion forum" and a "fan club message board" but alas, such is not the case. Sometimes reading the "its all good, bro" posts I feel like I'm listening to Sarah Palin, i.e. "out here in the DEADHEAD part of America, the REAL America, where nobody talks 'ill of Phil' there is the AMERICA I LOVE, also". Boooooring. We can love our country and critique it at the same time, and the same goes for Phil, folks.

Please do note however that there are many of us (perhaps even a "silent majority" lol) who appreciate and respect diversity of opinions intelligently expressed. Keep it up!

I wanted to tell you about this lucid dream I had on November the 8th. It was crazy and filled with the pulse of the universe. I was walking through a labyrinth of city streets when I saw the sleekest china cat I had ever seen, it looked at me and spoke in a clear voice of a thousand saturday nights and as I turned to respond I found myself in a elevator surrounded by tiny green frogs all dancing to a tune somehow familiar, so one way or another I joined the revelry until my floor came. When the doors opened there was this huge wharf rat sitting on a throne beconing me to join him for a walk along the watchtower. As we approached a rider appeared out of the mist, one with familiar build and stature and as I exclaimed "I know you" he dissolved as I found myself transformed into a blue spaceship named the Viola Lee.

INTENSE!
