These shows have been Fuckin Great! This band seems to get better every show they play. God Bless Phil Lesh and his very talented Friends
This isn’t a review of 9 November, but see my new post for Thursday 6th, for an Englishman’s perspective on that show.

anybody else think that jackie looks like eddie munster?
and what is the deal with that schmatta on his head?
ps- phil's new bass kicks ass!
report is jackie has a bad cold. helps to keep the head warm...
We wear hats because we need haircuts...
Wow, what a setlist
Does anybody know if all the shows of the run are going to be released? Soundboard recordings though?
it would be a shame if they didn't do that. Phil needs to talk to Bob about what he does, you buy a cd before the show and they make you a copy. You pick it up 15 minutes after the show, excellent quality.
I wish Phil did that.
To me this is one of the strongest 1st sets. Every song looks perfect with each other.
sweetest, most cohesive first set for me
all philathon buyers get all nights on cd-soundboards
well . . we'll know that phil reads the zone if they do esau on this run
thanks again TAPER ROB!!!!! WE LOVE YOU!
<<<<<<<<<<<<<Does anybody know if all the shows of the run are going to be released? Soundboard recordings though?
go to phils site, the whole NYC run is available...

Whoa awesome
so... just say I buy the whole run, do I get the shows that already took place now and the rest later? and I am confused on how I get the shows, is there just a link for m to download the shows...
oh man, this set list looks awesome I can't wait to here it.
I can go to one more show of the run... anyone have any ideas? do you guys think the last show is going to be something special? (not to say any of the others shows weren't because they definitely were!)
i believe it takes a few weeks after the run before the downloads are available...
Each show will be available for download 2-3 weeks after the performance date.
http://phillesh.shop.musictoday.com/Dept.aspx?cp=2 05_15014
do you guys think the last show is going to be something special? <<<<
It's the last show and it's on a Tuesday night in the middle of the week--- what do you think?
I have never come away disappointed from any Phil & Friends, Ratdog, TOO, or Grateful Dead show in my life... There All Good...
sounds like u bring the right attitude to them...
oh cool, definitely ordering the whole run
5:17 PM [taperrob] Set 2: Jam> Althea
If I had to guess I'd say the next show could be something special, too. I actually noticed it the first time I saw the dates, I mentally circled the 11th and 18th. Maybe I'm wrong but it seems like the stand alone days would be different somehow, maybe not outwardly so, but setlist, song selection and performance wise. I don't know about anyone else but an acoustic set would be bad ass, the Sunday night Chicago show I went to last year was awesome. Anybody think Phil would or, would want to for that matter, play an entire acoustic show or do you suppose he'd annouce that kind of thing just in case someone didn't want to go due to no electric music?
or you haven't been to very many
jk
i don't think that they would do an entire acoustic show. it would some beautiful stuff for sure, but an entire acoustic show, i feel, would have to be announced.
now, surprising us with an acoustic set, like in chi-town last year or the nokia is extremely plausible. Tuesday seems like a prime candidate.
how many have you been to kamloops? = )
hope your doing well. looking forward to seeing you and the missus. hope all is well
5:30 PM [taperrob] Set 2: Jam> Althea, Loser
AH what a setlist!
WOW! This setlist is sublime! I may just break my self imposed furlough from burning live music. I can't pick just one night, though. I feel if I was to burn any one of these shows, inevitably I'd end up with all them. DAMN this pack rat obession with dead music!
surrender, dude. no use struggling...
5:39 PM [taperrob] Set 2: Jam> Althea, Loser> Jam>
5:40 PM [taperrob] Set 2: Jam> Althea, Loser> Jam> Don't Let Me Down
The copy paper box at my house suggests otherwise, as it is full of unlistened to discs. When I first got a burner and internet about 5 years ago,I went nuts and burnt like 500+ discs in a couple of months time. I was taken in by the novelty of it all, and now I know I'll never listen to all of it. But, we phil's band as good as they are right now it makes it tough not to. I'd be fine if I knew I'd listen to it all, but invariably in a few months they'll be a whole 'nother batch of phil shows to oooh and ahhh about and burn and never listen to. Such is my dilemma... (Admittedly a good dilemma to have. LONG LIVE PHIL LESH!!!)
DON"T LET ME DOWN!!!! DON"T LET ME DOWN!!!
i'm in the same situation, dude, but don't know that i won't have the time to listen to them (and i've been doing this 4 over 3 decades..)
5:48 PM [taperrob] Set 2: Jam> Althea, Loser> Jam> Don't Let Me Down> Jam> Cryptical Envelopment
5:55 PM [taperrob] Set 2: Jam> Althea, Loser> Jam> Don't Let Me Down> Jam> Cryptical Envelopment> Jam> Dark Star
I'm thinking of putting away the GD stuff for a while and spinning new music (to include Phil). My usual problem tends to be that I'll get a new show, for instance, the Reconstruction that TMel just sent me (Thanks, btw) and am re-reminded how fucking amazing Garcia was as a musician and then I get on a Jerry kick and everything else gets neglected.
Despite all of this, I will definately be downloading this show!!! Wow, wow, wow is all I can say...
there's something else? ;-}
>>>there's something else? ;-}
LMAO
Mostly just Phil and Friends, and the occasional Dylan or MMW spin. Although, I just got Lifeboat, Jimmy's CD, the Word, and Crosy's If I Could Only Remember My Name this week. It was a good week, needless to say.
6:04 PM [taperrob] Set 2: Jam> Althea, Loser> Jam> Don't Let Me Down> Jam> Cryptical Envelopment> Jam> Dark Star(v1)> Jam> The Other One
6:15 PM [taperrob] Set 2: Jam> Althea, Loser> Jam> Don't Let Me Down> Jam> Cryptical Envelopment> Jam> Dark Star(v1)> Jam> The Other One> Jam> Mountains Of The Moon
this set list keeps getting better and better...
I cannot wait to hear this show.
I naturally assumed DS v2 was next(after TOO), hot damn! This setlist keeps getting better.
I'm not sure I'm familiar with this "Jam" song but they're playing the shit out of it tonight! ;-)
6:25 PM [taperrob] Set 2: Jam> Althea, Loser> Jam> Don't Let Me Down> Jam> Cryptical Envelopment> Jam> Dark Star(v1)> Jam> The Other One> Jam> Mountains Of The Moon> Dark Star(v2)
6:28 PM [taperrob] Set 2: Jam> Althea, Loser> Jam> Don't Let Me Down> Jam> Cryptical Envelopment> Jam> Dark Star(v1)> Jam> The Other One> Jam> Mountains Of The Moon> Dark Star(v2)> Cryptical>
Oh man...
6:30 PM [taperrob] Set 2: Jam> Althea, Loser> Jam> Don't Let Me Down> Jam> Cryptical Envelopment> Jam> Dark Star(v1)> Jam> The Other One> Jam> Mountains Of The Moon> Dark Star(v2)> Cryptical> The Music Never Stopped
WOW!
BEST....SHOW....EVER! If the playing holds up to the setlist, we may have a winner here, folks! Anxiously, awaiting forthcoming reviews. I'm almost done at work, and won't be back till Wednesday. By then I expect everyone who was there to have filed a full report, that is all, carry on...
set looks great on paper. can't wait to give it a spin
6:44 PM [taperrob] Set 2: Jam> Althea, Loser> Jam> Don't Let Me Down> Jam> Cryptical Envelopment> Jam> Dark Star(v1)> Jam> The Other One> Jam> Mountains Of The Moon> Dark Star(v2)> Cryptical> The Music Never Stopped, Donor Rap/Intros, enc: Ripple

Oh, THAT 'Don't Let Me Down'....
I thought Phil stopped doing Beatles songs when Warren left.
Never dawned on me.
When did they start doing Big Railroad?
wow....
Oh, THAT 'Don't Let Me Down'....
I thought Phil stopped doing Beatles songs when Warren left. <<<
Nice try.
There's only one Don't Let Me Down & they played Revolution two nights ago. (She Said on Monday night when Warren was there)
They also played several last fall.
Just saying
Drew R - Napphilphreak!!! This is your buddy Steven from Indy. It figures I would find you on the Philzone. I sent you an email, check your inbox. Get in touch, brotha, it's been too long.
damn, that is one hot looking show. Thanks TRob! :*)
What time did the show let out? I am going next Sunday and hope to make a 10:11 train.
Thanx yall!!!
That was the second set I was expecting last night, haha... sounds killer, can't wait to listen... has Phil ever played Music Never Stopped?
Wow.
Tomorrow I head back to the west coast.
And man o man did I get my phil of some amazing music.
Groovy people.
Tonight was fantastic. Quite a trippy 2nd set.
"has Phil ever played Music Never Stopped?"
Yes, in the Fallout from the Philzone cd he says it is one of his favorite Bobby songs
tremendous fucking show tonight, from start to finish.
I wasn't there on Friday and Saturday, but I thought that tonight has been the best one so far.
I haven't heard a Phil and Friend's Other One like tonight's in quite some time.
It was flat out ferocious.
One of the most beautiful Peggy-Os I've ever heard, too.
And the Ripple encore was just a perfect way to send us home....oh baby!!
Great meeting you Greg...Trails? See you at the next show!
this is why i go to shows! gotta love phil the prankster dropping that second set MONSTER on the unsuspecting heads (and ears) of the laid-back, relaxed mantinee sunday crowd. after a very nice althea and loser, i dont think anyone was expecting THAT... still not sure exactly what THAT was, except it was really, really good.
dark star v1 and v2 themselves were pretty short but the other one was literally out of control and the transitions were the most seamless ive heard out of this group.
is it dead circa 72? no, but this is one talented band phils got together right now and tonight they were hitting on all cylinders - i dont want to say tonight was them playing at their peak, but with a show that included a beautiful peggy-o and ripple and also featured some loud, amp-shattering music, i dont think it would be overstating that tonight was really a high watermark for this current lineup.
i can do a song-by-song breakdown but i think tonights show stands up, top to bottom, as one cohesive, excellent piece of music.
cool!
funny thing was, i heard someone say after show "i go to one show on this whole run and they had to play THAT setlist? not a single song i was looking for."
i really couldnt believe what i was hearing - maybe he wanted more jackie tunes or something
can't make everyone happy now can you
So, who says you have to close a set with a Deal and open one with a Scarlet>Fire or Shakedown? Way to mix it up Phil!.
Alligator was lots of fun. Peggy O was beautiful. Didn't think much of the Jackie tune. I thought his Hollywood tune from last night was a lot more fun and interesting. Tenn Jed was well played. Set I seemed rather short.
Yes, set II was as good as it looks on paper! The Loser tonight was better than the last one. Real high energy build at the end. I thought the Althea was very hot, too. Don't Let Me Down melted me, just like the first time I heard it at the Nokia last year. The Cryptical sandwich was heaven. Most of the songs were on the short and not so jammed side but were still great. Other One was ferocious with a mighty Phil bomb intro. One of the gripes I've been hearing the last couple days (and one I feel as well) is "where the heck are the Phil songs?" Maybe he was resting up for tonight. In II, Jackie only sang Loser and MNS. Phil sang everything else (I think), in fine form I might add. Music Never Stopped!! Ripple!!! Who could ask for anything more?
There have been musical peaks that really gave me a buzz at all of the 6 shows I've seen at the Nokia so far. However, this second set was probably the best set of the run so far. At least that's how I feel about it right now. Just another satisfied picky DeadHead.
I've heard The Other One many times over the past 30 plus years, but this one really roared. The intro, of course, is one of the best intros to any song, but tonight Phl had it at full throttle. Nokia shook. People outside must have looked around wondering if they were hearing and feeling an earthquake. The band joined in and just kept on going.
Fun show...
list to the show here> www.live365.com/stations/2012_live
second set looks quite psychedelic.
Great show - but I must admit I think last night's show was much better - all around. Tonight was definately a short show and talk about psychedelic - listen to Sat. set 2. Seeing Larry play fiddle on 2 songs and mandolin ( I think) on another is always nice. These are my 1st shows since last years Nokia run and the overall improvement in the band is incredible. Jackie's playing has dramatically improved - love the "dueling" or "trading" guitar leads that Larry and Jackie do. Can't wait for Sless to return either.
This show was an absolute gift from Phil, from start to finish. The Alligator was the best this band has ever done, finally getting the pace just right and nailing it, into a killer Bog Railroad. Jackie's Shaken was real nice and then just a beautiful, church-like Peggy-O followd by a carnival closing Tennessee Jed. The second set was epic as both Althea & Loser were just dripping with good ol' Grateful Dead intensity. The Dark Stars were actually the least of the jams this set as the Cryptical & Other One mind bended everything, wrapping a Mountains of the Moon that was real sweet, follwed up by a perfect, bouncing Music Never Stopped. Certainly one for the ages....
This show had a flow that reminded me of a Grateful Dead show. First set was a clear, crisp alt/country/folk/rock set. Second set was just flying deep into the universe. The band looked and sounded like they were being played by the music. It just ripped and flowed from start to finish.
Tonight we had a very special guest; Phil Lesh and Friends at their best.
Looking forward to Tuesday and beyond. Should be interesting to see how they work Barry back in to this. Also have heard rumors of another night of Warren and a night of Trey.
This band just keeps getting better.
Thank you Phil!!
An absolute priveledge to be there last night.....it's all just gravy now.
(((correct mr.Sunra…˜!°)))®
Tr••dle™2008
Phil played other Beatles tunes since Warren left...and I know for a fact he played 'Dont let me down' back in '05 in Milwaukee, after the chicago shows in nov.
Mr. Mustard last year in CO - which needs to be brought back big time
She Said a couple of days ago with Warren
Revolution is in the rotation
Guys, guys...
Never let facts get in the way of a good argument or opinion!
Sunra,
Usually you have good info. Which nights are the rumors for Trey and Warren? How good do you think your sources are? Thanks...
What time do you need to get on line to be up in the first few rows, around 6:00?
Andrew,
I've been getting there 15-30 minutes before showtime and have had no trouble getting to the middle of the floor. It hasn't been too packed up front. I guess the people for whom close quarters are a challenge are staying away from the floor, so those who do go up front are tolerant of the tightness. Friday was the tightest so far. Sat & Sun were relatively mild comparitively. Go figure.
Thanks for the info.
going sat. night & cant wait. what setlists phil has been playing so far, fantastic.
Thanks again
Source is not one of my 'usuals', but rather a 'zoner who seems to be passing along reliable information. She did not indicate a particular night.
My 'usual' source is pretty much 100% reliable, but it is often information I cannot pass on too early. No special info for the rest of this run as of yet. Except it should be a nice second half of the philathon if show #8 is any indication.
Not to kill the vibe on a good night for everyone. Thank you to everyone that responded with such kindness to my run-in the other night. I posted a response on my blog as to the outcome of my Tea "Session". If you want to give it a read, you can check it out here..

someone asked about sunday night show end times
the 11/2 set 2 ended at 9:55, the encore was over at 10:06
the 11/9 set 2 ended at 9:35, didnt write down the encore end time, but i remember being on the street before 10:00
Pretty sure last night was over right about 9:45.
I was thinking about that too.
I wonder if there is a really strict curfew on Sundays due to perhaps the security folk being in a union, or something like that.
Makes sense why they ended so early last night, and why the shows are at 6 in the first place, and why (aside from the added last night) last year they didnt play on Sundays at all.
Just typing out the CD label for this and find myself amazed once again at this show.....many thanks Phil!
The 6pm matinee start time makes life much easier on the bridge and tunnel crowd.
All shows Monday thru Saturday ends at midnight and Sundays ends at 10pm. It's not Nokia's curfew, but what the band agree to pay for. If Phil go past the allotted time, he has to pay an additional full hour for overtime.
I have attended all eight shows and each show have its momemt. Last night (Sunday, that is) was the best of the run! Unbelievable, cohesive, tight 2nd set!
I have been to all but this past Friday and Saturday, but out of the rest that I saw, I agree, last night's was the best!
Sunday's really end by 10pm? that actually sounds pretty darn good.
do they start early?
ES
Yeah, Phil went on around 6:20 last night and was off by 9:45.
I was home with 5 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter of the Giant's game last night!
wow the althea is the best I have heard BY FAR for a long time...Phil figured out how to play that one again finally...he has to be turned up......like he was in Rochester in 05 with Scofield
That's Buffalo... 12/3/05.
And the version Sunday night, while really enjoyable, never even touches that version, at least in my opinion.
No Trey this run. Another night of Warren is highly probable.
Have you checked Warren's upcoming schedule lately?
And Your Bird Can Sing tease near end of Don't Let Me Down.

I'm not sure I'm familiar with this "Jam" song but they're playing the shit out of it tonight! ;-)
I guess it's just semantics but a lot of these jams aren't jams in my book. Just because the piece of music isn't one song or the following song doesn't qualify it as a jam. If the only criteria for it to be called "jam" is that it's the taint between two other songs, then there are an awful lot of lame interludes where the band was tripping over each other and just couldn't lock in to the start of the next song that would count as "jams." I feel the passage needs a certain amount of grooviness to qualify as a jam.
I prefer to reserve the term for passages of music with clearly defined melodic or thematic elements that differ considerably from the songs on either side. Otherwise, I just think of them as interludes, which I generally don't notate in the setlist. Likewise, it needs to be a certain length to be considered a jam. If it's only a minute I'll refer to it as a jamlet. If it's shorter but still worth mentioning I'll call it a hint or tease.
Anyway....
I seem to get lucky with these shows and have decided that Sun. night is a sure bet, at least it has been for me. I found the 1st set of this show to be rather weak, unlike others on this post. I was saying to myself though- They have to pace themselves-they're playing 14 shows- They have to utilize their energy properly- so I thought- Theyr'e conserving the energy for the 2nd set. I was thinking I was wrong for the 1st 2 songs because it still seemed like the energy and enthusiasm was low. But when they pulled out Don't let me Down- Beautiful-Then the journey into the stratosphere commenced. Cryptical>Dark Star>Other One>Mountains of The Moon!>Dark Star>Cryptical>Music Never Stopped. The Music Never stopped pulled it together so well and the energy of the crowd and the band was pure bliss. I don't think Ive ever experienced a level of musical joy and intelligence for such an extended length of time.
The Ripple encore actually made me cry, which has only happened to me once at a show in my entire life- few thousand concerts. (Frank Zappa Watermelon in Easter Hay at Farleigh Dickinson many years ago did it to me and I was very surprised at how it kinda just happened) I danced like I haven't in years-spinning in front of Phil on the side of the stage. It was the religious experience we all seek. Communion, evolution, possibility, inspiration, intelligence and pure focus in the now to reveal the infinite possibilities of the music and life. A great gift is provided to us all by these guys and Theresa William's hauntingly beautiful and sincere voice. Well, thats just like my opinion for there may be others who did not experience it in this way at all and only have critcisms. My sense is that that number of people would be pretty low. What a wonderful gift these musicians give to us.
For the first time in a long time I was there for THE NIGHT. Usually I go the night after. What a show!....I too got choked up during Ripple
