Think we'll hear The Eleven?!
Or a Veterans Day theme?
See you tonight.
Hoping for a Guest. (trey)
Definitely the Eleven good call....
For this old Head, who’s been on the bus since the late ‘70s, I enjoy Phil shows because I enjoy experiencing the greatest canon of songs ever created interpreted in new ways. I love these songs; they are part of me, as they are, of course, for Phil. And Phil has clearly taken great joy in creating new readings and interpretations of the canon these past 10 years. Each lineup has brought its own flavor to the party, and wild over-the-top psychedelia ain’t the only flavor that I look for. For me, careful, artful, completely within the lines “first set” readings of gems like Friend of the Devil or Peggy-o are as much part of it as off-the-hook second set explorations. And yes, it took me a while to get with Jackie as an interpreter of Garcia/Hunter songs, but I’m totally there now. I had a total blast at Friday and Saturday and can’t wait for my next dose of Phil. Enjoy all.
Brother Esau would be sweet , looking forward feel lucky to be able to catch such great spirit & sounds. Theresa was superb on MUSIC NEVER STOPPED last night
good way to put it Dnem, I'm glad Phil isn't trying to just recreate the songs the same way the Grateful Dead played them, he is doing his own thing and it is awesome.
They play The Eleven really well, I love the way Molitz sings it.

Dnem, you hit it right on the head...nailed it. I agree with you 99%. I have approached music with an open mind, no expectations, for quite some time now, and that makes for getting the most out of it. I, too, have been on the bus since the late '70s, and my enjoyment of the GD shows increased immeasurably when I just left my expectations at the door. Many of my friends could not do that, and all they would do is critique the shows, eventually getting off the bus.
I am so glad I stayed on for this wonderful musical ride!
I'm really excited for tonight's show; so far this run I caught 10/31 (fun but not wonderful musically), 11/6 (nice and tight), and 11/8 (a real smoker). They're hitting their stride in that little room.
i'm really pulling for an esau, but i can also see phil playing the following songs, in this order, as his tip of the hat to that great song without even playing it:
E-yes of the world
S-carlet begonias
A-lligator
U-nbroken chain
phil sometimes works in mysterious ways, he's a sneaky fella.

rob again that potato pic,nice.
Wow...looks amazing.
Welcome back I Am The Walrus...
Last played 7/19/06.
set 2 added to the live365 stream...
2nd set struggled at points...
It's all a big struggle just getting there, and trying to get in on time and make it feel right, but tonight I thought it was a real nice setlist, and all the transition jams were just nice and melty.
Had a great time, people were nice and mellow, and the sound was in that optimal area between 'good and loud' and 'too loud'. All the folks in the band looked like they were having a bunch of fun tonight.
Most fun I've had on Veterans Day for quite a while.
That looks fucking GREAT!!!!!
Pictures have been super. Live 365 wonderful but I CANT WAIT TIL FRIDAY to catch the last 4 shows. CAtchin some PHil with close friends and meeting in the big APPLE (FLA -VT) Our time is almost here and I don't know how i will make it thru today and tomorrow. Thak goodness for taper rob. You have provided me tremendous appetizers and soon its going be my turn to watch Phil take the music whereever he wants it to go. No expectations, Im just looking to feel/hear that music and ENJOY
SMILE SMILE SMILE
The first set was great; very nice country, twangy feel to it. Second set started HOT, with a Feels Like a Stranger getting torn apart. But Molo struggled to find the right beat for the first half of DITVW, and they didn't really click again until they kicked into I Am the Walrus. From then on, no complaints.
Nice empty venue, sweet sound, good crowd, and pretty rocking show, except for a couple of spots. Nice to have Barry back.
How much, if any regular guitar did Barry play?
A fair amount of regular guitar, but I'd say he was mostly on the pedal steel. Larry was switching constantly, played a lot of mandolin.
Barry was a welcome addition. He really filled in a lot of the sound with beautiful pedal steel and psychedelic 6-string.
Barry kicked in several songs and brought that key Jerry sound for signature riffs, hitting the high "kitty meow" notes for STRANGER, the crescendo in Cassidy, and i think The Eleven or Terrapin.
Do you know what kind of guitar he plays? Is it a PRS?
It is also amazing what Larry can do with a mandolin and his other exotic strings. Big River was great, and so was Sampson, but back by the sound board during Sampson, Phil's bass could have been much louder to really "bring that building down".
I remember House of Blues in AC one night Phil got the whole f***en builidng vibrating. I like the new Bass, and from High time on Phil had the blue lights going, but I miss that bone shaking Phil Bass Speak.
All in all, I thought the show ebbed a little more than it flowed, but christ did jackie nail High time.
>>>Do you know what kind of guitar he plays? Is it a PRS?

Great that Larry mixed it up a fair bit last night... but gosh I wish he'd play pedal steel more often, even with Sless in the mix.
Two totally different styles and tones between them.
Any chance that Phil and Mr. Weir are getting together tonight and tomorrow as their schedules and proximity in location are in order...?
I am in no way rumoring anything, perhaps reaching a bit far
Nice - I like that clean redwood look. Man, Barry is four finger fluid.
I killed some time before yesterday's show by going to Manny's on Musicians Row on 48th between Broadway and 6th. This a great way to have fun and stay warm pre show.
They had a Gibson sunburst signed by Warren Haynes. They said he stopped in last week and signed it. Anyway, Gibson has this thing in selling "pre-conditioned" new guitars, like pre-faded jeans. I mean WTF? If you want to sell me a new guitar for $5k it damn well better look pristine!!!
After about 45 mintutes of noodling they realized I don't want to buy it, and sent me packing! ;-)
jackie was so terrible... phil had to keep telling him to listen to what was going on, or to turn down, or to stop playing... keyboard player had to tell him from across the stage to stop noodling, let sless solo, then him... it was so awful... and the worst part is, despite phil telling him over and over to get his shit together, he just kept on noodling, ruining jams, playing over larry, trying to steal the show... that would be all well and good, BUT HE CANT PLAY! he hit so many wrong notes, when he would really screw up, he would put down his guitar to go smoke a butt, or act like something was wrong with his rig and dick around on the sidelines or move to his piano....
kid cant hang
I screamed out for Phil to play New Potato Caboose at the first Saurday night show. You know I am a happy camper today after seeing it last night. Next on my most wanted to hear list is Morning Dew.
Just make sure I'm not near you when you decide to start screaming for that.
esau comments are just dumb
doug,
were you onstage with the band so you could hear all these things? sure you might not be doing some projecting?
isn't this the same "kid" that phil just said lights a fire under his ass and complimented "the student for teaching the teacher" on wnew?
seems like there's a reality gap somewhere...
Changing instruments, a sure sign of musical incompetence!
LOL
mandala,
steve pointed to sless, to tell jackie to give him some time, then pointed to himself, to indicate the order of the solos... and they in fact did switch to sless, then steve, but the whole time, even tho steve tried to get some room for he and sless to play, jackie was totally playing on top of them.
before that even, jackie was totally ruining a jam, and phil had to get his attention, and point to his ear, as in "chill out and listen to whats going on"... i'll give jackie SOME credit for snapping back into it when phil did that, and giving sless and steve some room to play, (even though he played right over them)... it was terrible... listen to cassidy and tell me that kid knows what he's doing....
ive never seen a band member that had to be told by another band member which order they will play their solos in... it should be natural, and everyon on stage seemed to be sick of the jackie greene show... maybe its ok if someone tells you to turn down or something, but if phil says it, you better damn well listen and not ignore requests from the seasoned vets i paid to see... not some snot nosed bob dylan wannabe .. jackie was totally getting everyone down
Theresa and Jackie shared the mic on Cassidy, which changed up the sound of the tune nicely. Also Sless leads on pedal steel stood out as highlights all night, especially in Mr Charlie and Tom Thumbs...
you Say Jackie was off Last night. Im sorry to hear that, Just an Observation, On Saturday Night he seemed to be sitting alot and disconnected from the band, not whats up.
The transition into Mr. Charlie was smooth as glass--a real highlight for me in what I thought was, overall, a very well-played show.
Having Sless there makes all the difference.
And, with all respect Doogles, I don't agree with you about Jackie. Fortunately, there's room for all kinds of interpretations of what he contributes and how the other band members react to it/him :-)
This show was very unique and the sound was much better than the 11/3. Phil was playing very loudly. The first set was good, but got loose at points.Mr. Charlie was very funky,Jacki forgot the last verse, Molo was a beast the entire show, he was driving it big time! Big River cooked & High Time, pedal steel from Barry > Bird Song were excellent. Samson rocked but I know they can play it out more and better.I hope to see that one again. Stranger was intense and very tight, Barry was quite good as was Molo then Cosmic Charlie...go on home your Mama is calling you, was great.Down in the Valley sort of slowed things down but the audience appreciated it by the end.New Potatoe Caboose was wow, what an amazing surprise! The Jam into I am the Walrus was cool, they nailed it. It was like 1969, although it seemed the obscure songs dampened some of the energy from the crowd. Many just stood and watched, Terrapin was another highlite. Phil tried to bring up the tempo in the inspiration part, like he has done before, but it ending up staying more traditional. The Eleven continued in the 1969 theme and was good.Steve seemed more comfortable singing it and Larry on the mandoline gives it a very celtic sound, although it is more subtle as a song as a result. Cassidy was a total surprise and it got ripping, it was played more like a 1977 slower version.Tom Thumb was perfect.
doug,
those are your interpretations of communications you saw between band members; phil's very recent comments in support of jackie suggest your interpretation might not be accurate...
it's obvious jackie was getting you down, how can you be sure of what everyone else was feeling?
your reference to jackie as "some snot nosed bob dylan wannabe" blatantly shows your bias. as for the bob dylan connection let me add my experience: i was lucky enuf to first see dylan in 1963 and was turned onto jackie a couple of years before phil discovered him. his resonance with the young dylan was striking from the beginning; it was not something he was trying to be; many who saw the early dylan have commented on the synchronicity.
i'm listening to new potato caboose right on the stream right now on the way to cassidy, so i will listen for what you're saying. but right now your comments sound like deadhead subjectivism at its worst...
So last night's killer set list wasn't so killer? Personally I think that having 3 guitars ( or instruments in that range) is overkill and with that a keyboardist of such limited ability as Steve Molitz playing so tententivley, is a reciepe for a trainwreak. And if you have Molitz directing the traffic then you're really in trouble. That said, I do like Jackie Greene and if he's your frontman you need to clear the sonic landscape for him to play.
last night was my first time seeing jackie really up close with phil... i might have been reading things wrong.. but there was def. an air of contention between the band and jackie last night. i know everyone around me was feeling it, as well as my friend i was with. phil seemed to be getting frustrated... am i just projecting or did anyone else see that?... or does that happen alot, or what? pointing to your ear and the around to the band, to me as a musician, seems to indicate phil trying to get jackie to listen to whats going on, instead of playing whatever he wanted. phil turning his fingers, as in "turn your guitar down and chill out" seems to be an obvious request, to which he shook his head no and kept playing. and he's not a terrible player, there were certainly jams that he could not handle, but when he was good he was good... but larry or sless would play right after and blow him out of the water. i'll give him credit for his vocals... i think thats why phil likes him so much... and he certainly has a good presence, he just needs to take a chill pill in my book
Is it at all possible that Phil was motioning to the sidestage sound guy?
Or was it directly at Jackie?
i didnt see any tension. i thought phil was motioning to the sound guy.
at one point between songs last night phil put his hand on jackie's shoulder in what seemed to be a congratulatory way
to me it was an all around well played show
there is also an established signal that phil uses to indicate to the band where to make a change - 2 fingers pointed down means move a whole step down in the key signature - usually at the next repeat of whatever the form is at the time - phil often has this stuff planned out in advance, but i've seen him use this signal before - bob weir uses it all the time.
it is easy to use data to confirm a pre-existing bias, but it doesnt always prove a point -
on the other hand, phil might have been telling jackie to ease up - so what?
He tells molo to slow down or crank it up all the time - by rolling this hand over and over for 'pick it up' or by moving his open palm downward for 'take it down' - what's the difference with signals to jackie?
Phil gives a lot of direction onstage, both through the muted monitor system (couple of times last week, phil forgot to mute it) and through hand signals - it doesnt mean anyone is playing poorly or fucking up...
All of this logical and non opinionated stuff has me scared!
Where's the drama in it all? It falls flat if someones not on the edge of being fired!
> It falls flat if someones not on the edge of being fired!
Exactly!
saw this interview with miles davis where he says he can't stand to play with anyone who isnt troubled - cause when he plays with someone who is comfortable with everything, nothing bounces back.
Music is all about tension and release - struggles on stage might actually make that happen more
JFC!
Relax and have a good time, will you?
There is a very fine line between this band, and the GD for that matter, and a run of the mill bar band. Flashes of brilliance and spillage of shit, at times.
It is a work in progress, and I love it every night. Yes, at times Jackie or Steve seem off, but at times they bring it and surprise the shit outta me.
Can't wait for tomorrow, and I will be sad when this run is over.
I was being sarcastic in reply to the hunt for drama, but you do raise an interesting point. If you're too comfortable, the music is UNcomfortable...
Doug,
I have attended all 9 shows so far this run. I have to say that you are way off base about Jackie's communications with the rest of the band.
Sitting upstairs (every night) facing Jackie - the communications between the band is nothing short of phenomenal. Yes, Phil did say before introducing Jackie one night "light a fire under my ass". If that does not speak volume about how Phil feels about Jackie - maybe you are speaking to wrong choirs. Phil loves Jackie's playing as well as the rest of the band. The KID can play a mean guitar. Quite frankly, you are definitely in the minority with your point of view!!
What fun would it be if everything was perfect? When you have 3 guitarists there is going to be some overstepping. Also, Barry has played mostly steel in this band and they are playing a lot of new material lately. If I want perfection I'll listen to a cd.
Here is last nights Walrus:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FNslJg7QcE
more to come- phil is just booming.
i have seen a few of these shows and several with jackie in the past - i dig his singing and presence - i think his guitar playing is decent too but sometimes i do think he plays too loud and does step on jams a bit...it could be the mix or where i'm sitting...i still think he is good and i have had a great time but at all the shows i have seen he definitely has been louder in the mix than larry or barry - don't know if that was him or the house sound
while i am not a big jackie fan, he didn't ruin the concert.....i don't think all of phil's gesticulating was aimed at jackie; some was for the sound guy offstage and it seemed to me that phil was asking for changes in his monitor mix when pointing at his ear.....jackie did sometimes play during others' solos but if it was at a lower volume, more in the background, it would have been ok....he sometimes gets lost in his own stuff but for me, it's Phil who allows him too prominent a role....the contracts are up soon so we'll see what personnel changes happen....i won't miss jackie but phil needs a vocalist....bring back rob barraco.....
I was at the show last saturday 8th Nov, it was great but i was just listening to show I went to last year on Nov 5 and I've got to say the band sounds a lot more together a year ago. On Saturday Larry's guitar was really high in the mix and overshadowed the other guys.
Check out the opening jam into Brown Eyed Women from last year and you'll see what I mean. The fact that Ryan showed up for the whole second set also added something. I came from London to see both shows and will be back next year...................it's not quite Bickershaw but it's still wonderful
This band gels as one!! Amazing listening and communication on that stage!!
Phil definately signaled the sound guy to turn him up in the second set. Finally he did get turned up during New Potato and I Am the Walrus.
Fun setlist but show definately had its rough spots. The shows this weekend should be better!!
Now on Archive.org here: http://www.archive.org/details/plf2008-11-11.95760 .sbeok.km184s.flac16
Overall this show was really about TRANSITIONS - LOTS of them - done very well, too.
Seems Barry really helps the transitions work better than w/o him in the band.
It also frees up Larry to play other instruments - he played Bazouki quite a lot at this show.
I actually liked both Spots of Time (is that a Jackie song or Ryan Adams?), and the Down in the Valley, which was a very different arrangement, ala Dylan, with Jackie on electric and Larry on hollow body steel. Very interesting arrangement. The Eleven was much more powerful and developed than the 11/2 version. Cassidy was sung very well by Jackie and Teresa together (I was SO GLAD it wasn't Sugar Mag). Someone noticed a Simpsons riff in Cassidy but I missed it.
Of the 3 shows I've seen (2nd, 7th, 11th), this was by far the best. Not an in-your-face rocker, but very subtle and jammy, with lots of transitions.
One annoying thing I noticed is that as soon as the band quiets down at the end of a tune and starts jamming/teasing other tunes, I always want to listen closely, while everyone around me is distracted and starts jabbering with their neighbors or even trying to talk to me. I guess the lack of familiarity with what is going on onstage leads to boredom and/or the booze factor shortens people's attention spans (I am SO DONE with wasting $$$$ drinking @ shows now). Someone said to me "wow how do you always know what the next tune is going to be?" Simple, I LISTEN . . .
someone pointed out that spots of time is written by phil and warren
Walrus is kinda super cool and the band really does justice to this Beatles masterpiece...
lotsa guitar lines covering horns, strings etc...
Molitz!!!!

enjoy the rest of the run.
I've seen 6 shows of the run so far. (So pissed I missed this one; DAMN YOU PHIL LESH with your
Mr Charlie, High Time> Birdsong> Jam> Spots Of Time and your New Potato Caboose> Jam> I Am The Walrus and Cassidy and Tom Thumbs Blues...ALL WITHOUT ME. NOOOOOOOO!!!).
I've seen all from within 20 feet of Phil. I've seen a great deal of gesticulating and hand signals from Phil, almost all directed at the tech who controls the monitor mixes --off stage left, which is right behind Jackie from Phil's perspective.
I think onthebusin03 hit the nail on the thumb with his question "Is it at all possible that Phil was motioning to the sidestage sound guy?" Based on what I've seen so far, I'd bet that's what it was 90% of the time. However, due to the physical layout of the participants it would be very easy to believe Phil's communications were directed at Jackie instead.
Likewise, just as it's tough to sing and play an instrument at the same time, it can also be tough, distracting and frustrating, etc. to try to communicate with the sound guy to turn someone's volume up or down in the mix while you're trying to make music. Phil's facial expression sometimes reflects this, I'm sure, not necessarily unhappiness with the music being played. From what I've seen, he's been gleefully happy thus far.
"jackie was so terrible... phil had to keep telling him to listen to what was going on, or to turn down, or to stop playing... "
"kid cant hang..."
Riiiiight, Doug. And Lesh is an idoit who just keeps hiring him again and again.
Sorry you got the bad acid, man.
i really don't think anyone pays any attention to some of these looser jackie haters. They are just a bunch of OLD GRUMPY MEN who like to sit in their seats and think they are rock n roll critics. As anyone who is in the music biz knows there are good days/moments and bad. nobody should know that better then a head. Jackie is an equal part when they are great or slightly off. often he is the spark that gets it all going.
If you don't like it just go do something else like sitting on your ass watching tv
everyone is entitled to an opinion but you guys are just a bunch of grumpy old winers.
The rest of are just enjoying the shows
I just noticed, there's a quote of the Simpson's theme in the Cassidy instrumental break: 3:34-3:44 in the Joe-Beacon recording!
