This was a good one.
Rob, why the fuck weren't you there?
You missed a fatty.
Golden Gate Park.
A special place.
Psychedelic jamming in a psychedelic place.
THEIR psychedelic place.
A great show.
Great show! Two and a half hours straight powerhouse. Wonderful to see them play so well.
OK, just because I'm not ready to hit the sack yet...
I thought tonight was a GREAT show.
The Cassidy, Loser and jamming in Let It Grow washed out the kids and non-heads quickly and opened up some nice space, musically and physically, and the Let It Grow took us oooooooouuuutside and oooooouuuuuutside we stayed.
The Time cover is not something I'm generally excited to hear and so I headed from my nicely open space near the rail to the back for a beer, but this version of Time was played really well and I started really listening to it, and I suddenly got the "time" theme of it, and I found myself really enjoying it (and my beer).
This show was so poorly sold there was room wherever you wanted to go. Don't get me wrong, there were a LOT of people there, but this is a BIG space and you could go from the side rail to anywhere and back, room anywhere you felt like grooving.
It was great to be able to move around and really trip on the Polo Fields and the lights shining on the trees and on the FOG above us! THAT is the best fucking light show happening. Lights of all kinds shining on the low-lying fog above our heads. Far out.
Bob nailed Death Don't, and coupled with Time the sense of where we were became strong.
The Fire was outstanding and then the other One just BLASTED US!
Everything from there on was dialed in and it was just great to be in that giant misty field at lands end.
I really thought the Unbroken Chain was the best I've heard JK play, with looong jamming, and overall I thought the band really came together and played TOGETHER tonight.
And Phil & Bob were back home.
I kept getting the hit of Time and Home.
REAL good show!
Just got home from the show in GG Park. There was a strict 10:00 p.m. curfew so after Rider, Phil did quick donor rap right into a group bow. Weir also thanked the locals who live in the neighborhood for, "Putting up with us." They came on-stage at 7:30 and started at 7:40 (Weir was having technical problems with his ear piece.) Then it was straight until 10:00 sharp! Cold, foggy, San Francisco summer day! Levon Helm was a lot of fun but his set was only scheduled from 3:45-4:35 and that's when he was on stage. Way to short. All in all, a fun day in Golden Gate Park.
Wow, what a great day in GGP! So special to have won tickets (thanks KFOG), and even more special - I was finally able to get my wife out for her first Furthur show! Pile on top of all that we got to see Levon Helm w/ Larry and Teresa (of course) a killer brass section, some NOLA jazz and much much more.
Furthur was a treat and the boys were spot on from the beginning of the set through the whole 2.5 hours with no break! The fog enveloped us in a blanket of love and set a lovely screen for the light show. The Cassidy opener had everyone guessing what would come next. John did a stellar job with Loser and by the time they hit Grow it was jam until 10:00pm. Time was another surprise but surprisingly they nailed it!
I agree with heathentom - Fire was on fire as the boys hit their stride with Phil dropping some solid bass bombs and the place came alive! I felt like Terrapin was a poignant moment picking up on a theme of the journey - perhaps the journey always leading us back home or to where we belong. It was great to be "home" with the boys and they delivered the goods.
A solid shout out to the video crew who did an excellent job keeping the big screens filled with Hi-Def goodness.
Missed you Rob and sorry I didn't call - I was dialed in my scene taking care of my lady.
ack, double post somehow <ignore>

And I'm still psychotic over the GOTV show - amazing!
^Sweet video. Confirms the great vocal presence and hot Jeff playing in this show.
And at the end you can see Bob telling Phil to come back and take a bow 'cause they're out of time, which of course was a theme of the show.
Making me smile on a day of rest.
I had to stay home to get the set list posted... I got my hours cut at work, times are tough. Yet, due to friends back East, Red Rocks awaits! Glad you all had a blast.
thanks for the setlists and reviews !!
Is it OK to still miss Jerry?
ok with me! that's mainly what i do...
Interesting day in the Park. The logistics of GGP and the hurdle of minimum entrance fee of $75 worked strongly to limit stray dogs, litter, and folks wanting a spill of one's swill.
The festival setup was well done. Levon Helm and crew, though not as high energy as at the Independent show, delivered a wonderful set. Favorite new sounds to these ears: Langhorne Slim. Crowd great multicultural blend; tie dyes meet lite couture; thanks, ladies of SF!
The Furthur scene: as others have commented, space was to be had in many parts of the field. Peculiar, but not that I was wishing for a dense 90's Shoreline lawn, relatively low total numbers for crowd for the hometown heroes (reflected in low # posts for this show vs. earlier Summer tour!).
I feared after a blazing MMJ set, that our boys might seem a bit, well, old. But, once Bobby got his ear monitors sorted out during a tasty 4 man jam, our boys took back this sacred turf.
I truly think this show was the finest example I have heard since the 80's of Bobby's ability to throw out sophisticated, angular guitar riffs, perfectly creating a rhythm power trio w/ Phil and Russo.
The general vibe of this nearly 145 min set to my ears was Mahavishnu Orchestra-Dead, searing, sometimes mathematical, very psychedelic. Many of my older head group bemoaned the lack of mellow sing-alongs; not I. As others have posted, this was psychedelic contemporary music in a psychedelic venue of great history.
DO NOT miss this band in the next 6 months!! This is not a "Dead" tour of the past 5 years; gone are the clumsy pass-offs of guitar lines, gone are the two bands on one stage. IF you dig the past ventures of 69, 74, 77, this is your contemporary challenge. Enjoy!
They got IT!
sake you get it...thanx for the post...ive been saying what you just said for the past year...thank god i am not alone.....msg msg...just in time for thanksgiving
Awesome set. Does look like Westies aren't repping as hard as Easties, but it is what is. Can't wait for Woostah and MSG in the fall.
"I truly think this show was the finest example I have heard since the 80's of Bobby's ability to throw out sophisticated, angular guitar riffs, perfectly creating a rhythm power trio w/ Phil and Russo."
F'yeah and don't forget Chimenti here! JK and the vocals. I, for one, am in heaven (first show 1973)! Wish I could see them all!
Those Shoreline lawns: fun! Esp. right in front of the speakers!
