I've got to say that I had forgotten just how much fun Lyle Lovett is w/ the whole Large Band in tow. Saw them last night at the Welmont Theater in Montclair, NJ, and had an absolute blast. I've seen Lyle in quiet settings, at Elvis Costello's Spectacle taping, and a Lyle/John Hiatt acoustic songwriter's gig, but not with the Large Band in many years.
At their largest, they we 15 strong, including Lyle, 2 electric guitars, a fiddle, a cello, mando/flat picker double, 5 singers, piano, drums, percussion and Leland Sklar on bass. Not for nothing, but I'm convinced that Leland is a Muppet.
Lyle is an excellent entertainer as well as musician and writer. His droll, deadpan delivery suits him so well. The musicians are all top notch. Played in many different configurations, from Lyle on a solo acoustic, to a quarter of bass, fiddle, mando and Lyle, to Lyle, bass, drums, strings and guitars, to the whole shooting match. Many favorites played, stories told, laughs had, and walking away, all I could say that as much as any show I've ever been to, that I got every pennies worth of my ticket purchase back, and more.
Highlights, hmmm... well, Church, You're Not From Texas, My Baby Don't Tolerate, Cute as A Bug, If I Had A Pony, much, much more.
Grinning like a fool, and to think that this was my Mother's Day present to Mrs. Zeke...
Cool! I was lucky enought o see Lovett at Telluride years ago. Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas sat in for the whole show! If I remember correctly, they played FOTD.
