Dave Alvin acoustic, in a room so small that you don't even need a mike. The Gig Performance Space seats 70. Dave played a Martin and Chris Miller was on a tele. A fine set from a well versed musician in his element. Here's most of what he played;

I was even more impressed with his acoustic playing compared to the electric I've seen him play. Chris did a great job on slide and tasty leads that never overshadowed Dave's fingerpicking. They got it up for the outro after Abilene and the jam leading into Ashgrove was pretty deadish. His storytelling was as entertaining as the songs. Some of the arrangements were quite different from the records, especially Down the Rio Grande. Great vocals and a true songwriter worth supporting. Hope you get the chance to see him soon.
Alvin is an incredibly talented and under-rated player, he is the real deal and always worth the effort in any situation.
I've always wanted to see HIM play with Phil and I think he'd really fit into the current band well, he really knows how to bring it.
Thanks for the review and lucky you for getting to see him in that format.
I hope he brings The Guilty Men to the East coast next year. I missed the last Guilty Men show in New York becuase I was out of town. I will see Dave in any format except The Blasters. I thought they kinda stunk last time I saw them. I saw The Knitters to get my Dave fix this summer and it wasn't all that satisfying. I like them but much prefer Dave with Guilty Men or stripped down solo like the show above.
I love the acoustic Dave Alvin but nothing compares to a full on raging Guilty men electric show.
Love ya, Dave.
The recent merger of the XM and Sirius music channels left Dave Alvin's 9 Volt without a home. The show was hosted on XM's X-Country which was dropped in the merge. Word is that it will return on Sirius' Outlaw Country. It's Dave playing a lot of roots music including an occasional song of his.
Hope so. Thanks for the info.

I couldn't agree more. Hopefully he'll be back on the east coast soon. If you go to his website, or the Yep-Roc website, Dave has released some mighty fine digital tracks. You gotta buy 'em, but I made a nice little album from them.
Thanks for the review!
he was great w/ the knitters last year...
