Surrounded by big NW fir trees, a heavy gray sky & lots of good beer.. Should be a quintessential NW evening
Too bad it's just before shroom season.
On my way!
Giddyup!
Is it raining there?
Shite, there are 40% of the total Marymoor posts for the Worcester show in 2 months, what's up PNW folks? Anyone going? No pre-show banter? Show's in 10 minutes.
I know, I get it...West Coast chill vs. East Coast exuberance. Where would you want to play as a band? Just sayin'...
Got 2 East Coast transplant friends going, hoping for a winner.
Just joined up! I'm in Chicago, but I have a friend at the show. He says it's raining, but the crowd is happy.
I agree with Kuz. I've been on the board the last three nights and I've seen little to no pre-show or show for tha matter. C'mon, we have shows coming up in the NW and we want to hear whats going on out there! Just sayin.
Kinda dead in here folks... No one's got the setlist yet?

Excellent show! Hit Rider/Road hard! Always love the Ryan Adams tunes. Great Sugaree. Sweet fire.
It is the Ola Belle Reed song- with added lyrics from Brian Lesh (the new Robert Hunter?-we'll see)
Yup, you were right Cloud Forestgump,2 new mountain songs in as many days. West Coast inspiration?
http://furthur.net/the-news/188-highonamountain
Anybody able to decipher the Encore song that was rejected in favor of One More Saturday Night? Inquiring minds want to know....:P
Mountain Song - Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra outtakes from Crosby's 1970 "If I Can Only Remember My Name" Phil played on the original jams with a chorus. Hunter added verses recently.
High On A Mountain - As stated above an Ola Belle Reed song with extra lyrics courtesy of Brian Lesh.
Great, fun show. Til The Morning Comes? Sweet. The whole band was on. Harmonies were great, the middle section of Cassidy was awesome. And We Bid you Goodnight. Gorgeous.

Very cool that Furthur is covering Ola Belle Reed's High on a Mountain (with add'l verses written by Brian Lesh). It was written by Ola Belle for her mother after she died. My band Tangleweed from Chicago recorded the song several years ago and was invited to play the annual Ola Belle Reed memorial festival in 2008 as a result. We visited the cemetery where Ola Belle actually wrote the song. She and her mom are both buried there now. Here's a picture:

nice pictures Scoobie!
The band sounded great last night. The vibe was cool and I don't think the rain put a damper on anyone's good time. There was a dude dressed as uncle Sam up front, I thought I saw Phil smile at it when they came out. the music was really well played, there were more than a few jams that went into the primal dead space, no joke.
Thanks Furthur for continuing to play wonderful music for us. Already looking forward to the next one!
Fantastic time last night... 4 hours in the rain listening and partyin to my favorite music through a crystal clear soundsystem. It was one big ol wet and wild party! My big takeaway from last night and is still with me today is that it "felt right". Ever since Garcias departure, it just never felt correct. DOn't get me wrong, Phil and Friends was pretty damn fine most of the time.. But the big DEAD tours just didn't quite scratch that itch. Last night it was scratched again and again.. On top of the spectacular playing, the rain, many friends was the realization that they ar eplaying the music the way it should be played.. finally... I was thinking that they listened to the fans and have distilled all the great stuff we loved about the band and packaged it up and are just lettin it rip! Hearing the female backups on 1/2 step just brought huge tingles as it was very Donnaish... Jeff ecapsulates all the best keyboard action over thier career. anyhow... finally drying out and have been grinning all day.. Hope they can keep it in the small venues like the old days.. way more managable and fun for sure.
NW head checking in. Been reading about how we don't contribute much. Sorry, everybody, maybe it is just too chill out here. Come show time time, we rise up, don't worry. The show atmosphere this weekend was really mellow, super calm vibe. Could have been the weather. Virtually no security/police either. All three shows were pretty equal in quality..... they were all smoking hot! Very consistant. Bob shone at Cuthburt, Jon and Jay were insane at Marymoor. Phil... well, I had one of those moments again at Marymoor, where it feels like the bass sound is echoing through my chest cavity. That dude is amazing.
Cuthburt is a sweet little venue in the shadow of Autzen Stadium. Phil played there with cheese and moe once in the past. The Dark Star>Other One>Dark Star>Other One segment was well played. Jammed out, but not all that long. Felt that way about a lot of the tunes this weekend; great jams, and killer transitions, but efficient, never getting too carried away. Not concise, but not way out there either. 2nd Cuthburt was a bit of a challenge, because it absolutely dumped almost the whole 2nd set. Several of us considered bailing during Terrapin, it was that bad, but hearing the Flyer and all that stuff was great, my first. Killer Lost Sailor Saint, with the Golden Road to close 1st set. Very nice!
Marymoor Park is huge, the show area is simply a fenced off area in one corner. After the show, most of the fence was gone, so you just walked out into the park. Flat, and because it rained the whole damn show, muddy. But we lucked out with reserved seats up front which were being removed five notes into the first song. They had this weird rubberized padding to stand on, but hey, no mud! This show was great. TTMC was a first for me, I think. Two newer songs were both strong. Also liked that Top o the World. Jon was nuts on that. Same with So Many Roads. They teased GDTR before settling on Rider, the songs mesh so well, and the transition was going great, but in the only real fuck up of the three shows, the band stopped playing entirely before finally starting GDTR. Bit awkward.
We were some soggy, happy heads after these shows. Secret to success: having dry clothes in the car to change into!
My highlights from the torrential NW run:
> Golden Road (Cuthbert) Bass drops from Phil @ Marymoor, Cumberland (Cuthbert), Jam out of Estimated @ Cuthbert and into Passenger.
> Cool energy from old-school heads at Cuthbert, even w/ the rain. Ran into a lot of old tour friends from west coast.
> Energy at Marymoor very different, it seemed like a lot of heads from Eugene shows didn't even make the trip north...
> the 9:30pm curfew @ Marymoor was a big disappointment.
> Given the wealthy communities surrounding Marymoor, one would think that they might invest more in the arts and build a proper concert bowl (like Cuthbert).
>I saw only a couple of tapers last night.
> Marymoor would also be a killer venue for camping, but the community is against it.
>>> Marymoor would also be a killer venue for camping, but the community is against it.
Especially after the Widespread Panic camping event. They were very upset about the all night bonfires that consumed some fences for fuel.
Glad that they did well on their Eugene & Redmond shows, now I'm really, Really, REALLY psyched for their Red Rocks shows! Should be fun to see what tricks they have up their sleeve. ;-D
I'm just drying out after a wild few shows...... Playing was amazing and VERY high energy.. I have the wicked funky Stagger Lee dancing around in my head.. Cali & Rocks are in for a treat, as these boys really have a head of steam built up!!!!
I have many pics from Friday-Saturday, but this really shows the sheer intensity of the monsoon-like downpour during Fridays second set
Had so much fun in the rain the last 3 shows. Great to see everyone jammin' out in waterproof gear, it just got that much more intense with the wind/rain/light show!
Man that show was fun. Best performance I've ever seen of John. He really let loose several times in the second set and showed me a side of him I've never seen. Highlight of the show for me was this middle passage in the wheel. It started off with a teeth rattling phil bomb that he held on to for about ten seconds, just looking at his hand like it had something really important to say. The next 2 or 3 minutes contained some of the most introspective improvisation I have ever heard. Nobody played louder than a whisper and it was surreal. It sounded more like classical counterpoint than improvisation, almost like what it may have sounded like to hear beethoven improvise. I know you rider was off the charts with the band taking the changes around and around with a palpable look of glee on everyone's face. John just ripped it up on this one.
That is so true about that Rider. And the Wheel for that matter. Combine the otherworldliness of Phil and Jon's interplay, and the rain falling through the lights... that was a pretty intense 2nd set.
Gotta say though, that Santa B. set list looks pretty damn good.
Glad someone else mentioned Phil's bomb leading into The Wheel, I'm sure it left a mark!
Yeah it most definitely left a smoking crater. No recording on archive yet. Anyone else see tapers I thought I saw a few.
Looking forward to hearing the NW shows, Eugene > Redmond. The rain still has me smilin' on a cloudy day! What a ride, thanks to all.
