Pardon my gushing, but thought every song was very well-played. Tremendous energy throughout the night. Nice dynamic jams, mostly tight vocals with only a couple minor flubs. Think the band brought everything they had to this show, and that's a real good thing. Bitchin song selections.
So is the timing of the nearly full moon rising directly behind the stage merely a coincidence? Made for a nice effect.
Wish all Zoners could experience the magic of Red Rocks because it never phuckin phails!
"lets dump asses and gas and stick w money for gasoline or a new hunter tune if you have to get ultra-modern bobby"
should've been there... you might reconsider??
is this "this old poeple's music" that we we're seeing? if it is then it sure is great being old
highlights for me:Deep Elem,Ashes and Glass, early fast paced Charlie, nice Scarlet-Fire sandwich, Death and UJB were well-done.
Jeff's playing on Eyes and Death and Uncle John's was really special....can't wait for tonight
San Leandro?
Was he wearing a Raiders skull cap and tweaked out on biker meth?
Ditto for Ashes & Glass belonging in the line-up- Was one of the better tunes in Buffalo... I could do without the Ryan Adams tunes though in favor of more originals. How about Esau?
Speedway was the first "mountain" song...two more new ones to go!
What's the word on Big Bad Blues.
The traffic was rough. Band dipped their toes in the water gently in the first set with a mild tempo, but everything was well played and tight. The moon over the stage for much of the first set was so sweet. Jupiter rising and the lights shining off the rocks was so beautiful. Red Rocks was in all it's glory...
The second set was roaring with energy. Scarlet was big and bouncy, we loved Bobby's intro of Big Bad Blues and the Mountains of the Moon was liltingly kind. Ready of take off now with the Estimated > Eyes > Fire!!! WOW!
During the Fire, the Red Rocks behind the stage were being engulfed in red and orange lighting that made it look like they were on Fire. Incredibe! Everything in this set was as good as it gets and heck - it's Red Rocks. The warm gentle wind swirling in there from time to time and 2 more to go!
Great night, yet so much more with 2 more to come.
Just saw that this show has popped up on archive.org already - http://www.archive.org/details/furthur2010-09-24.a kg483 - waiting for it to finish seeding. In the meantime re-listening to UJB at Cuthbert on 9/17 and how sweet it sounds. Thank god this tour is putting the final stake in the heart of all that "fake jerry" negativity crap - FURTHUR INTO INFINITY AND BEYOND!!!
>>>The traffic was rough...
Have you tried the back road in from Morrison? Always used it in the past and it was sweet compared to the front entrance.
>>>...it's Red Rocks.
A sacred place in time and space! I'll have to settle for the tapes but I can transport myself back to earlier shows there to fill myself with the spirt of the place! Remember The Rocks have a life force all there own which is what makes every show there special. The "band" just knows how to harness it's power!! Enjoy!!!
Fun show! Here's my .02 cents....
The opening jam was short and cooked right into Truckin. My brother was thrilled since he had called it as the opener earlier in the day. Bobby flubbed the start of the second verse--very authentic!--but it was an otherwise solid opener. The backing vocalists really helped round out the singing, and I enjoyed their contributions all night.
The subsequent Truckin>Speedway>Charlie was a wonderfully crafted trio with a nice mix of song and jam to start the show.
Weir sang West LA, and I thought the droll tale suits his current vocal style. JK really stepped out on one of the jams and got me shuffling my feet.
Deep Elem kept the bluesy vibe alive under the waning harvest moon, and everyone contributed some good leads and vocals.
I thought FOTD was outstanding, maybe the best rendition I've ever heard of this Dead classic. (Except for Phil's "lost verse!" I actually like the lyrics as written by Hunter, but I don't know why Phil sings it the way he does??? It barely even rhymes! Oh well...) The band traded some great solos during the jam, and I thought Bobby's strumming was especially soulful. The climactic chorus was also really well orchestrated. Nicely done!
I also really dug Ashes & Glass. I'm not too familiar with Bobby's solo material, but I thought of it as a more playful cousin to Throwing Stones, which has always been a personal favorite. Once again the backing vocalists really swung on the nursery-rhyme chorus.
Casey Jones was the perfect bookend to this early-70s-heavy first set. The tempo build toward the end had me dancing and musing, "This really is what it feels like to be high on cocaine."
All and all a very well-crafted first set for the RR run.
The band jumped right into Scarlet Begonias for the start of the second set, and I thought it was a highlight of the show. The jam kept getting hotter and hotter with JK leading the way. I must admit I was disappointed that they didn't use the momentum to launch right into Fire, but the new material that followed was interesting. I actually thought they played two different new songs back-to-back, but I may have just been confused by the unfamiliar material. I liked the rollicking, Deal-like chorus.
Mountains of the Moon was another perfect song selection for this autumn night. Phil's singing was fantastic the whole show (best I've heard since Fall 2000 Q tour), and he really put his soul into this one.
The band eventually meandered into the chunky reggae rhythm of Estimated Prophet, and I thought it was the only clunker of the show. For some reason it never seemed to click. The mid-song jam was especially underwhelming. However the band recovered nicely for a standout version of Eyes. Chimenti owned one of the jams, and the rest of the band followed his lead into some really beautiful music. My cousin (this show was a family affair for me) hoped for a "Stronger Than Dirt" jam, '73-style, and I think this band could really pull that off, but it was not to be this time.
Instead they wound back down to a bluesy B3 groove, and Weir gave us a gut-wrenching performance of Death Don't Have No Mercy in this land. I thought it was THE highlight of the show, and I'm sure Garcia is smiling somewhere. Powerful stuff.
UJB was the right response to Death's call. It brought back the warm autumn glow that I'd been feeling all evening. The shared and traded vocals were tight, and the ending jam was great. I was then surprised to hear Russo start pounding out the Bo Diddley beat, but I really enjoyed the chance to dance hard at the end of the show. NFA was more compact than I would have liked (I miss those wild, meandering versions that Jerry led in the early 80s), but it got everyone on the Rocks clapping and singing along. Great fun!
Phil then gave a heartfelt tribute to Cody and followed it up with a soulful Tom Thumb's Blues. Once again he nailed the vocals, and his bass thumping was relentless throughout the song. Back to San Anselmo indeed!
Final thoughts until tonight: This is a really good band. It's obvious that they have worked hard on song arrangements, but they also have some great musical chemistry that shines through on the better jams. They'll probably never be as inventive as the Dead or the Q, but they have the greatest repertoire in the world and do it justice with really tight performances.
And of course PHIL IS THE MAN! His playing really led the way furthur the whole night, and Russo is very capable of holding down and pushing the grooves right there with him. Phil also seems right at home trading licks with JK. I can't stop smiling....

Checking out "Big Bad Blues"
Good show overall. I've found that their transitions are getting even more seamless since the two Broomfield shows. I was really glad to see John sing more of the Jerry songs.
Good mix of bluesy & jammy songs, Phil & John were definitely on. Phil was laying down some good bombs throughout the night. Estimated > Eyes > Fire was an awesome trifecta, although I agree with PHarmer that the jams in Estimated weren't quite as energetic as Eyes or Fire.
Good vibes & energy throughout the show. Phil also gave his blessings to Red Rocks at the end of his donor rap, which was awesome. :-)
...and I get to see these guys 2 more times, what a treat! :-D
Big Bad Blues - New tune? Cover? 1st time played? (Haven't wanted to check the recent setlists - keepin' open to the suprises) Don't know if I like or not yet -- haven't had chance for a second listen-- but it was a helluva lotta fun last night!
OMG!! what an absolutely beautiful show! joe russo bringin' the madness all nite, phil thumpin' bass like 77', bobby terrific singin & playin w/such passion, jeff c playin' w/soul & chops, john k. an incredibly talented guitarist playin like a dream , & harmonies from heaven! the lights, sound & power were all the best of the tour so far! an honor to see this band play so well at such an incredible venue there is nothin like furthur @red rocks! last nite the switch was flipped to a higher level! so much fun!best band on the planet right now!amore
Nice review, there, MattyB! Wish I was there too.
these auds from Orgeon, Redmond and the Rocks sounds GREAT on archive. must not have had the traditional redrocks wind last night, or else Jeff Frank is VERRY FOB.
nice work tapers!

Fire on the Mountain
Fantastic first night at Red Rocks. The full moon rising behind the rocks was just beautiful. Planned or not, Gravytrain, the poster artist saw it coming and incorporated a beautiful full moon into a very quality show poster.
Loved the opening trio...The tempo was lazy and loping, but really fit the vibe. NSB is one of my faves and I keep missing Cosmic Charlie so hearing it so early was a treat. Ashes & Glass is a real sweet song to me...maybe it speaks to Dads.
I loved the split between Scarlet and Fire...Fire deserved a special place at these shows for the folks in the 4 Mile area and the band really jumped into this one with energy.
I really enjoyed Big Bad Blues...really sets a funky vibe the way they go into the chorus slightly acapella and then Phil jumps in with a groovin bass line...sweet new tune indeed!
Echo everyone's comments above about Death...Bobby dug deep!
And I always love the NFA chant...great way to close a show in a place that is all about three-way power...
band <> audience <> environment
Speaking of three way power...the new boys are really first class. I saw a posting about Furthur MVP...I vote for the whole band, it's a team effort up there!
TWO MORE NIGHTS!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1okYlwA-pqM
super nice show guys...some good lights last night, here during scarlet, check out the rest of my vids there too from Eugene! All my camera went dead by 2nd set..DOH, not tonight...
Thanks Brian,great job,love Eddieboy!
YEAS!!!
thank yew captain Kurt for posting the link
Bobby cut the ending of Mts of the Moon to begin Estimated, not letting Phil sing the final verse, '...bow and bend to me', the transition is awkward, but then
again, Weir seized the moment and went with it...counting down the intro as Lesh attempted to brinf the song back for the final verse which he and JohnK seemed to be trying to do. Oh well...full moon and all.
Only low point to these ears...great show.
Also should mention John K sang the whole Speedway Boogie...a first for this band. Plus a birdsong jam to open set one leading into Truckin
