"Back in the day" there was a Dead Friendly bar, "Mr. Charlie's", only two blocks away from where the Sov Center now stands. Wouldn't a Mr. Charlie bust out be perfect? Or how about Big Railroad Blues? Any, all or none won't matter...going to be a great time. So glad to have Furthur coming through Greater Reading, Berks County.

Can anybody tell me what parking runs around this place? I see lots of places listed on the venue site but am curious if any are better deals.

Super excited about going after reading the last few nights reviews. Thanks Rich!

So where's it at off the main road there? Been to Reading but only the Silo. Lewis, what road did you take off I-76?

No better deals on the parking here. Most of the lots are garages. I like the lot at 5th and Cherry, its an easy walk to the venue and it is right across the street from the best bar nearest the show. The Ugly Oyster.

Alternative entrance to the City of Reading:

If the Penn St. Exit is backed up continue to the exit for 222 business, Lancaster Ave. (a weird left lane exit) and go left at the bottom of ramp, over the Bingamen Street Bridge and then left on 5th Street, (like the candy bar)....That will take you right to the heart of town.

Let us get there safely folks...Probably gonna be wetter than a Wharf Rat out there.

I thought Days was the ballad in Ohio?

Ahh, I feel like Pennsylvania is synonymous with Wharf Rat or China Doll.

I have been hoping to catch a Furthur Wharf Rat. Wondering what the ballad will be for last show of tour.

Looking forward to hearing a recording of this. They can do a wonderful PitB, and Colors is my favorite of the new songs...and a great song, period. Phil drops some tectonic bombs in The Wheel. Just a nice looking sequence there. I was hoping for a Colors in Chicago.

im going to totally agree with carmine.....if i was looking at the setlist i would be wondering also....but thats why we go....everything went above and beyond.....rolled into rainy reading at about 3 .....and then went to the ugly oyster ...whomever made that call from here hats off to you...we drank the harp tap dry...all deadheads...then off to the show which upon walking down the street i was very impressed by the sheer number of poloice officers who had the road totally blocked off like around the united nations when somebody is giving an all important world changing speech...felt like i was in a combat zone out of a movie there were so many cops...but they were cool...by there sheer numbers everybody had to be cool....then off to the 5th row drinks in hand ready to rock and did they rock...setlist does it no justice...from the beginning it rocked..bob was 100% and once they got the sound right it just took off like a rocket ship....we were waiting for the other shoe to drop which didnt they dropped it hard...anybody who rips jon is not worthy of a response...he had the toal 100% guitar and effect setup to a tee...he was off the hook and it just got better as it rolled along....first set was great and then we waited...i was bummed when i heard the opening notes of playing but then it just kicked into high gear...let it grow into wharf rat was off the hook....it was 8-7-82 alpine valley...go to the tape...from rise and fall on i was having a total flashback...jon almost sounded like he was playing jerry note for note and it was fucking loud and awesome at the same time...then help-slip sandwiched totally on cue...the definately practiced it then back into slip into franklins the only bummer was johnny b goode i was hoping for brokedown....either way killer...baltimore will be tough to top this....everything.....the arena...the cops...the people...the attitude was just 1 total cool ride from start to end...might as well...might as well....so...off to baltimore we go...the aquarium all you can eat crabs and then fucking playing dead...cant wait...get weird...happy trails...see you all tonight

Nice show. Well played, of course, as this band has shown they bring a solid show every night.

HIghlights for me were the Greatest Story, Bertha and pretty much the whole second set.

Come Together ws actually a nice groovy jam, but they broke the flow by having to stop and change key after they had jammed so nicely into the song. Kinda a bummer. Couldn't Bob have just played it in another key? Not a complicated song, lol.

Regardless another highlight for me WAS Bob. His vocals were very strong, his playing was OK, even good at times.

Overall, nice show. Enjoying this band a lot. Though not jonesing to get to another show right away, I 'd go again in a heartbeat, as always.

The show was lame, to be generous. I can't believe this is the same exact band I saw in July. This will be a tough one to live down.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By We Travel the Spaceways (Sunra) on Wednesday, November 17, 2010 - 09:39 am: Edit Post

There were a few lame moments, but that is what you get when a band lives in the moment. I'd rather some rough spots with some magic moments than something more predictable.

The Jam out of China Cat was a trainwreck, but it was rescued by a nice solo by JK.

AND THAT IS ONE OF MY ALL TIME LEAST FAVORITE SONGS TO OPEN A SHOW WITH!!! WTF?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Dirkstar (Dirkstar) on Wednesday, November 17, 2010 - 10:45 am: Edit Post

Hmmm - I liked the slow moments - i walked out to take a leak and grab a beer. The celebration opener allowed me to make it to my seats w/o stress (this venue was overwhelmed by the throng of heads).

Second set was VERY well played, but agree the 1st half was a little slow and meandering. Wheel>UJB>Let it Grow were off the hook.

I loved the China>CT. I was thinking 'wow, this sounds like a bluesy Rider' I was with a buddy who hasn't seen a show in 25 years and he LOVED every minute of it.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By whatshisname (Liquidmike) on Wednesday, November 17, 2010 - 11:36 am: Edit Post

I'll agree that there were a few rough spots but overall I thought it was a really well played show. Phil practically hammered the Rain song in after Playin. It did make for some nice moments with him striking what I like to call the "super hero" pose. leaning into the rest of the band thumping the shit out of that bass. Unfortunately the song itself didn't do much for me. I liked the groove and I like the chorus, but the vocals didn't make it to me at all. Sounded really muffled most of the time. I thought they rocked the shit out of the Grow>Wharf Rat. I loved that segment. I was expecting the HSF combo and the inserted Xeyed was done well I thought. Seemed really seemless to me. I also could have used anohter encore but I'll take anything well played these days.

This was my first trip to Reading and I like the joint. The town and the place seemed to accept teh throngs of freaks well. I didn't see any hassles anywhere. Nice venue with $5 beers and $2.50 water. You don't see "reasonable" prices often, at least I don't. They did make you cup the water, which I thought was strange. Why no bottles?

First show since the southern February route and this was sort of spontaneous too. Haven't done that in years and it was a nice boost to my morale for the year. Well worth the 4 hours to and from Jersey and will put a smile on my face as I fly back to NC later this week.

I wanna thank Rich again for the ticket. I had a great time meeting you and Tommy and the nice lady whose name is escaping me right now. Hope you guys had a good trip back home and have fun in the Garden this weekend.

"if u were there we all know the magic was in the house last nite"

Absolutely correct. Still putting my brain back together after last night, 6th row right in from of Phil, sound was perfect down there. One of those shows where the looking at the set list doesn't even begin to explain what went down. Great hall, really nice people everywhere, fantastic hotel three blocks from the hall. Great great time, looking forward to tonight.

i freakin loved this whole show but particularly the 2nd set..the real highlight for me in the 1st was greatest story ever told...they do not play this often and i love it...they nailed it! absolutely nailed it...i did not really care for come together..i've seen them do it enough, nd thts not counting thhe billion ratdog versions...noticed tons of cops outside, not sure if anyone was getting busted

Judge, the polarity of opinons did not escape me. Nor did the fact that I seem to be the only one with a very low opinion of last nights show. But I am calling it as I saw/heard it. I would agree that the Let it Grow showed some signs of life but most of the show really was (to me, I guess) uninspired and uninspiring.

Wonderful night of Lesh taking the floor away and reappearing on a different level, and everyone else soaring. Totally enjoyed the festivities. John was so in command of Wharf Rat and it was one of those peak experiences!

Really enjoyable show...best sound since Ames...this show was noticeably louder than any other on the tour so far (I'm doing all the shows this tour). Phil was loud and clear and I good hear Bob's guitar much better. The band played great and song selection was fantastic. Might be the best show of the tour so far for me, though i really loved Ames and Cincinnati as well. Looking forward to tonight and hope the band can continue to maintain the energy and level of playing.

"any one have a picture of Bobby's feet from last night?"

I assume that comment was in reference to the photos I put up the other day. Pretty funny if in fact that is all that the photo was...

The photo was NOT to concentrate on Bobby's feet, it was to show that I could actually see and read the Setlist BY his feet. Never in my over 300 shows had that ever happened to me and I couldn't help but to look and see what they were going to play - I wouldn't do this as a habit, but it was fun in how unique it was...

Check it out again...you can make out almost the entire set

As predicted, there were plenty of tix to be had, although I didn't see many people selling.

Shakedown Street was across the street from the venue. It was a tiny area, so it got very crowded, but a fine selection of food and items for sale, including Christmas tree decorations for your favorite wook.

Lots of police presence but they were mellow from what I saw.

Reading is crazy to drive into and out of. Especially rush hour with all that shiny rain.

Venue is nice. 10-years old. It's basically a 1/2 sized sports arena. Halls narrow, but beer for sale and bathroom lines not too long. Good views and sound. But floor was packed with chairs and people. We were three rows up aboutone-third way back.

Started with Celebration. Like any new tune it didn't give the show a rocket lift off. Kind of reminded me of the pace lap before the Indy 500.

Big River was nice. Played good and fast. Weir's vocals were on, as they were all night. In fact, I thought he and the band sounded as good vocally as I've heard them.

Bertha (got that call right). Enjoyable if not a little loose. Always like JK doing the Jerry songs.

Sittin on Top of the World. A highlight for me cause first time. But also because JK wailed on guitar and vocals.

High on a Mountain. Nice. This song has real promise. Vocals were muddy for lyrics, but nice harmonies. Got very spacey towards end.

Greatest Story. Straight off Ace. Good stuff. Again Weir on tune and on beat.

China Cat. Different arrangement from last time I heard in Philly but it sounded good. ..Gave the Rider tease before dropping back into Comes Together, which was dark and funky and on. Jeff doing his best Billy Preston. Very enjoyable. No shattnerizing and flat out playing with crowd singing at full capacity.

Seemed like a long intermission

Playing in Band. Had a feeling we'd hear this after GSET. I grew tired of this tune during the Dead days, but Furthur plays it well and is willing to explore with it.

Jam into Colors of Rain was odd. Lesh stepped to the mic half a dozen times. At one point he just picked up the pace and volume. Lots of communication with Russo. JK talking to singers...FInally it got going. It was enjoyable and also has noodle room to grow.

Wheel. Fun crowd pleaser with a nice jaunty won't you try just a little bit harder refrain repeated again and again. It was at this point that the 2nd set really took off. FIne version of Uncle John's Band seemless into a gorgeous Let it Grow. Weir again on target and JK jamming crazy.

Wharf Rat. JK did it justice ....I know that the LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIFE.

Then drop into a funky syncopated beat. It was strange seemed some were playing faster than others. It reminded me a bit of Corinna. Then bam, dropped into Help with a dandy slippery slip knot. Then Jeff jumps from one keyboard to next. On a dime they are into Born Cross-eyed. (Huh, wuh, were's Franklin's? I'm confused says wife. Don't worry says I, they'll get to it.) Sure enough into Franklin's to end set.

JBG encore..... meh.....played fine but not the inspiration I was looking for. Others loved it though. I'm not complaining.

Wish I was going to Baltimore.

It was an ok show. Just so you know, the police also block the street like that for most Reading Royals games, so it wasn't anything special for the Heads.

The place was only about 75% full and the security was cool - Plenty of the reefer being smoked all around me in both places I sat.

I did get to see Sittin on top of the World and Born Cross Eyed which I had never heard live before, but I HATE Wharf Rat. Sorry - that song is just a big momentum killing turd in any set (and just as I was thinking "Cool - no ballads tonight!" too).

And to be anal, the sequence was technically:

Help on the Way>
Slipknot!>
Born Cross Eyed>
Slipknot!>
Franklin's

Having seen 30+ Dead shows since '78 and many of the Phil incarnations and even a Rat Dog show or two i have to say that i really enjoyed this Furthur band. It was my first Furthur show and i think the goods were delivered. I did not mind the Celebration to open, it reminded me that even when things are tough, you can Celebrate. The Big River and Bertha were rollicking and well played, the out jam in Bertha had some nice Phil Bombs and the new High on a A Mountain was sweet and rolled right into a high energy Greatest Story, Bobby was in full form and sounded strong. The intro jam into China Cat was interesting and the bluesy turn the out jam took had me wondering how slow would this Rider be and then wham, Come Together - nice and groovy.
Second set was one long jam and you cold feel the Band coalescing Playin'>Colors of the Rain>Wheel>UJB> - sweet jams, moving images, familiar thoughts, the phil bombs at the end of Wheel shook me >Let it Grow - nice sing along "And listen to the thunder shout I AM I AM I AAAAAAAAAAM I AM!!! Made even more prescient by the early AM thunder storms that rolled thru as i finally fell asleep early Wednesday morning. The Wharf Rat was beautiful and the Help>slip>BCE>SLIP>Franklin's was awesome (particularly since i called it earlier in the day - its in the thread somewhere) and well played, the way the Band stopped BCE and dropped back into slip ON A DIME was early 70's vintage and did we ever listen to the music play! Encore JBG, was um, well, not my wish list encore but it was well played and got me out the door with a smile but not as fast as a Day Job or I Fought the Song did once upon a time...
Overall, well played, well mixed, great venue totally cool security and the only real problem i had was that we had to drive 40 minutes to find a diner to quell the munchies from all the burnables!
Thanks Band, thanks Reading, and thanks for the vibe - 'Till next Time!

Long story short, agree with the most glowing of these reviews. Real strong performance to me, probably best playing of the six Furthur shows I've seen thus far. 12/12/09,2/15/10,2/22/10,7/10/10,and 7/11/10 being the others. Fantastic sound where I was on the floor, and just a chill, relaxed venue that just let us be us!

Thanks for all the great reviews, and especially Josh Done's clarification about the Slipknot-> Born Cross-Eyed ->Slipknot.

That was a unique jam, and most lists gloss over that sequence.

I liked how the Reading security handled the venue. You could bring your cold beer out to the smoking area if you wanted to... Not like Baltimore.

Some cute Wookette shared her flaskette of Whiskey with me out there, and that was fun. Unfortunately, I lost my favorite Hematite down the ventilation grill. I passed it to a fellow who seemed to need grounding, but his body responded by Spazzing out and dropping the poor rock.

RIP Hematite.

Musically the show had many great moments, punctuated with some beer break tunes. the Baltimore show, in comparison, was more cohesive and energetic in its flow.

This night in Reading was full of great Vibes, and there seemed to be a Surplus of Gorgeous Young Women who liked to Dance, and Drink Whiskey. I thought that was fantastic!!

Love you, Beautiful Reading Women. You made my Night.

Stu, I agree that the Baltimore show was much more energetic, but it was missing the sense of flow that I like to see at a show. Almost every song was played great, but there was nothing connecting the songs together. Most songs would just end and then they'd start the next song. There were actually more open ended jams in the first set (out of the blues tunes, Crazy Fingers, etc.) then in the second set (Hard to Handle being the only song that really went out of it's structure at all, and even then not much). I was never really surprised by anything in Baltimore, whereas Reading (especially the second set) had plenty of "Wow" moments for me. I had a great time each night, but for me they were two totally different vibes, which is actually one of the great things about this band.
