That alpine show was my second. Sweet transition into scarlet. On the 6th revolution of the end part of mags they jumped into scarlet, no slowing down. First time I had heard them jump from one tune to another without a jam between.
Still stop whatever I'm doing when listening to that show and wait for it and smile.
Awsome show they tore the old building down. I was amazed start to finish. I had a choice seat in the Phil Zone. Loved every bit of it. Two great sets of music. Hope to see these guys furthur in the future.
The show was transcendent. I mean exactly that. I haven't seen such top notch ensemble playing at that level in a long time.
Lesh and Wier have a powerful "sound" together. Their rhythm section is an engine that is absolutely smoking.
The guitar leads were crisp, electric, thoughtful, playful.
I did not feel at any time that I was listening to a band trying to cover grateful dead tunes. I felt like I was witnessing something new.
I was absolutely transfixed.
A super tight show, that was loads better than the Columbus show this summer. Great sound and strong vocals all the way around. Some very nice nuggets for me were Dancin,Phil singin BirdSong, The scarlet and fire was nice also, sugar mag with the closer shunshine daydream, and cold rain goes without saying.
A very nice show to have been at. Of course my ony criticism is the idea of having a vocalist that does an outstanding job at Jerry tunes and not letting him sing all of them. I had no problem with Phil doing a stellar birdsong. BUT Bobby, I love you bro and the thing is that you do your material so well we love to hear you, I always have, I turned to my wife as you were starting into estimated and throwin stones and remarked how much I was looking forward to hearing these songs. All we the fans ask is to let John do even more Jerry tunes. Stranger, looks like Rain, Cassidy, Saint, Sailor, Me and My Uncle,Black Throated Wind, and On and On your catalog is unbelivable and you do it so well. I am always aware of Jerry's abscence it is just some times it is even more painfully clear than others. I am so grateful that you and Phil have decided to continue on and I will accept whatever configurations and arangements you offer. I look forward to the coming spring and summer shows. Thank you, for a real good time!!!
that show was so good...take everything back in chicago post......sound was of the hook
Best post-dead show I've seen since PLQ in early 2001. Off the hook.
Hey Now! I've been seeing all the Post Dead bands heavily since Jerry died and, to me, Furthur is good, but not consitently killer. But, still going to see them! Worcester next for me. I think many people agree(myself included) about the Bobby singing Jerry tunes thing, but hey, he's gonna do what he wants to do. Remember, after Jerry died, Bob came right out and said he was gonna sing them all.
I think one thing holding this Furthur band back from consistently taking us to where we need to be taken at shows is John not totally RIPPPING the leads. He seems to get us to "8", where we need to be taken to "10". Does anyone feel he's gotten to new heights on this tour?
Thanks!
I agree- John doesn't put it over the top- but neither did any other guitarist I've seen with post-dead incarnations. It's like everyone's afraid to really let it rip and stay in a safe, conservative zone. Jerry hit a lot of "wrong" notes along the way to the heights he would sometimes scale, and that is the difference. He had nothing to lose. These guys they have play since are scared. It's all too "nice". Let the frigging wagon careen of the cliff now and then- you don't get to the peaks any other way.
whats the deal in not completing any songs.....
smooth transitions, loud and clear.....excellent sound...I was all over the venue and you could hear in the back just as clear as you could 5 rows in front....gave up my seat for more dancing room.....it was so good...the best show i have seen in a long time.......they must of added some new speakers some where....cold rain and snow was so good....phil didn't sing his usual jill lyrics....the sunshine tease after scarlet begonias was sweet. The tempo was so fast my feet almost couldn't keep up. Berry's promised land is one of my favorites and i am so glad that they jammed that in cincinnati.....after that show i wanted to quit my job and jump on tour........man....Yuse guys pulled it together and showed cincinnati what jamming and good music is all about.....
Thank you FOR A REAL GOOD TIME. come back again please soon. the fire on the mountain....reminded me so much of Hart....i could ALMOST feel him there .......LONG LIVE THE DEAD!
oh yeah throwing stones........was so good......i can't believe how good it was.....
Thanks bobby......that whole place was dancing....dancing.....hard
"These guys they have play since are scared."
I agree with everyone up until this point. JK is human and is not going to hit it every night. Not every show is great, hell I have seen some shitty Grateful Dead shows in the late 90's. JK does not miss notes and you should give it up for that....what you view as not taking risks, I see as not playing sloppy. The way I see it, this band is the only game in town and they are great. I was watching this new generation of Heads dancing and really getting it...that's what it's about too.
It is not the Grateful Dead, it is the spirit of the Grateful Dead and it's all good.
I am still smiling from those Chicago shows.
Great show. But the sound was lacking IMO. No low end from Phil at all and lots of echo. I thought the Dead were pioneers in making arenas sound good? We were a few rows up directly across from the soundboard.
>>Of course my ony criticism is the idea of having a vocalist that does an outstanding job at Jerry tunes and not letting him sing all of them. I had no problem with Phil doing a stellar birdsong.
Wow that quote took a turn...
But overall, this looks like one of the best flowing setlists of the tour. I think it also has some of the best allocation of vocal duties...Not too much Bobby, or Phil, and plenty of JK vocals on songs which he is suited to sing. Setlists are MUCH better this tour than in the summer.
Listening to the stream on archive.org right now and love the clear section from Greatest Story Ever Told that was inserted at the start of the ending Sugar Mag jam- very nice. Very nice faux slide playing by john on Sugar Mag too. My earlier comment may be errant after enjoying the energy of this show. Too bad the venue was so cavernous and boomy, but overall great ensemble energy.
was the arena packed full ? how close to sold out was cincinnati ? its the 2nd biggest room on the tour ( after MSG )
The floor and lower bowl were full. Some of the upper seats were covered with some sort of sound proof/keep out of these seats type thing.
My seats were row 6 in front of Phil. Sound was grate and the setlist was choice. I saw the 3.3.2010 in Chitown and Columbus in the summer. I would say Chitown was a little better than Cincy but not by much. The fireworks medley during hte second set in Columbus made that one unique. There is always something good/memorable that happens when these guys tune up and hit the stage. This has and always will keep me coming back.
Thanks to Phil and company for coming to Cincy.......nothin like sleepin in your own bed after a show! Cant wait for the next one whenever and whereever that may be.
We just completed a mini tour of the two Chicago shows and the Cincy show. Without question, this band is playing as well as anything they have ever done, and that includes with Jerry. I will go so far as to say that this band has gone.....FURTHUR! The sound...is perfect. The jams...were perfect.... Three shows in a row, each as different as anyone could possibly imagine, and yet, each was perfectly played. Every time I hear this band, I view it as a blessing. How amazing that we could be given this opportunity for a second time. I for one, am very grateful, amazed, and mystified that anything can be this incredible.
16.......min bird song...phil thank you so much.....
For whatever reason, I won't try to figure it out, Bobby and Phil have captured that spirit again. Maybe it's John, maybe it's just the chemistry of the band altogether. I dunno, but I'm so happy that it's happening.
The second set was as good as anything I've ever heard at any kind of Dead-related show, ever. Going back to '76. The closest was the PLQ show I saw in Pittsburgh in April, '01. But that felt like excellent musicians in an excellent band playing Grateful Dead material. Furthur feels like Phil and Bobby tapping into something that hasn't been around since maybe 90, maybe even earlier than that.
A few comments on earlier posters:
No, the sound wasn't great, but it was much better than a couple other shows I've heard at the Coliseum. I loved how they boomed out the backing vocals in a few places, very cool.
Pinman and Starkdar had a great point about wanting the wagon to fly off the cliff once in a while. I'm not sure that's John's choice, though. Jerry was a leader in the Grateful Dead, but the bass and rhythm guitar players are the leaders here. Especially on Seven Hills, I think Bobby cut things short. This is my 3rd time to hear John with Furthur, can't even count how many DSO shows. You may not think he's getting past an "8" with the slightly more structured jams in Furthur, but he did get to that "10" many times with DSO. Give him time, he can get there, if that's what they're all going for.
I can't wait to listen to the cd's tonight, especially the end of set 1 and all of set 2.
This was the first Dead related show I've seen since The Other Ones way back when. Smama and I were pleasantly surprised by the vending scene and how little things have really changed in this long running circus.
Thought the show was very enjoyable. I agree with many comments above about Bob singing and John playing. But in reality, it's just amazing that this is still happening at all!! I encourage them to do whatever they want...clearly it's working for them. This was the last of a four show run and everyone seemed energized still. Looking at the lists over those nights is also impressive...What a wide variety of mostly older material...not much of the 90s stuff and few if any repeats.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned what I think was the highlight of this show...King Solomon's Marbles!!! Holy Skeleton's Smoke!! The jam that grew out of the end of He's Gone and then the quick, tight drum solo that kicked straight into Stronger Than Dirt. This was Dead music at it's jazziest best and the boys absolutely delivered. Danced my ass off. Milking the Turkey was some stellar jamming and really took me back. This song really showed how good Russo is for this band. First time I've seen him since Fat Mama and man he can play....great pick for the band.
The Days Between that followed was a good cardio break, but was probably the lowlight for me for the night. That was quickly turned when Phil picked the first notes of Fire.
All in All...a great night of music, laughter and love. I wish these guys the best and I hope the circus comes back to town real soon.
Peace

kudos and much love to the TAPERS!
Rob, the King Solomons...Im all over it. This was what I feel is the essence of the Grateful Dead....now reincarnated. I've heard about 4 of these KSM's this year alone, but all were note for note right off the hot wax. This take, however, transcended into the heavens, calling upon the angels to bow and weep. In retrospect, the three shows I saw represent one 10 hour event over three days, with no repeats, and each and every song I heard was played to what seems was it's greatest potential. This event is not a concert at all, and these guys are not a "rock and roll band" and should never be compared to one; it is a band beyond f-king description.
sunday night in cincinnati in November. Boys were on. glad i drove for twenty hours for this one. Second set was my favorite from the year. Blew away east coast shows later that tour. The althea from first set was there. Great crowd.
