Or·phic (ôrfk) adj.

1.Greek Mythology. Of or ascribed to Orpheus: the Orphic poems; Orphic mysteries.
2.Of, relating to, or characteristic of the dogmas, mysteries, and philosophical principles set forth in the poems ascribed to Orpheus.
3.Capable of casting a charm or spell; entrancing.
4.often orphic Mystic or occult.

Does no one else think it odd that this band "The Orphics" has been added both to the Tweeter and Meadows shows? Two shows where Ratdog and P&F will be sharing the stage. There is an obvious greek mythology connection between the "Orphics" and the "Odyssey" tour. It gives one pause...

I was tempted to just post this to make it look like I know what I'm talking about but I'll give credit where it's due instead.

Edward Zajec, Syracuse U.
****************************
The Orphics compositions differ from the rest for being closely modelled on the tonal musical system: ... By paralleing the role of meter and rhythm in music with the role of grid and figure in picturing, it was possible to establish a correspondence of units in time to units in space. Following this idea, as the composition unfolds, each frame closely portrays in space, the sound organization of a particular measure in time. Within this spatial framework (which is no longer arbitrary in relation to the musical score) the passage of time is shown through changes in color relations founded on a system of scales: a sequence of colors arranged in a unique order , that is general enough to serve as a tuning for the composition of color in space and time.

The Meadows site never listed disco. phil's site(s) and their own site lists them as an opener. The mind runs with all types of thoughts. But I guess those are left for the rumour board. all i know is that i am counting the days til the meadows show. if phil has a suprise, well that will be the cherry on top. after that show i can restart the count til the jones beach show.

THANK YOU PHIL & FRIENDS!!!!

Phil's band is:

Jimmy Herring - Guitar
Warren Haynes - Guitar and Vocals
John Molo - Drums and Vocals
Rob Baracco - Keys and Vocals
Phil Lesh - Bass Bombs and Vocals ;o)

I don't think Jimmy sings a'tall, but please correct me if I'm wrong...

Hey, Florida Head here. I saw P&F 3 times and Ratdog twice down there in April. I have tickets for the shows at Tweeter Center, Meadows (Hartford), and SPAC. I just wanted to know what the venues were like and how is the security, etc., etc. If anyone could fill me in I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks alot!

Here's the deal fla-head. Great Woods is 1/2 hr from Boston. Decent generic looking amp, sometimes weak sound. Scene is sort of sketch, lots of local pigs and rent a cops. Hartford is a dump, its unfortunate that their playing here, city is pulseless. The amp is bigger than most, but right next to a major highway, that you have to cross to get to the gig. Very few cops and no curfew are the few advantages. SPAC rocks, what a great place, my favorite east coast venue. Scene is kind, state park right next to it, where you can park and party for a whopping $4. Sound is killer and the place is huge, with an upper deck in the amp. Overview, weather is looking great for this 3-pak, GW will have some energy on Fri, Hartford, well hell, its on the way to New York, sort of, and Sunday will be the golden nugget. Time to step it up and shake it down!

If you are a toker, stay away from the back fence area of great woods. Lots of plain clothes. Saw phish do a couple shows here in 93 or 94, lots of people got busted but most were being juvee. If it rains, the middle of the field turns into mud slide city. Frisking is normal...

BTW-

orphics was a local boston based ambient-electronica type band spearheaded by Matt Roth on accordian, should be interesting.... However, this was two years ago when I lived in Northampton that I remember orphics, living now in northern maine may have caused me to miss somethings.

Also for camping, an hour away in plymouth, MA... 95N for 13 miles to 93 north exit 12, 93 north to route 1 about 6 miles, get to route 3 south (exit7) head to route 44 west, exit 6b (carver), about 27 miles to that exit. take a left off the exit onto Samoset st. less then a mile take a right onto court street. And you'll be at the Mysle Standish state park...

If you wish to head west, go 495 N to 90W ($) then take exit 4 (about$2.10) and head north on 91 to exit 18 for Northampton (look out for the statie), head north on US 5/10 about 1 mile, take a left at the center of town, head up main street aka route 9 for about 16 miles look for signs for D.A.R. state forest, take a slight left for the US marine corps highway aka rt 112 about a mile and a half on year right is DAR, very nice, Very clean, good fishing in lower highland pond, great swimming areas....

Anyways, those are kinda out of the way and very cheap, 2-3 bucks a night.

Just saw the setlist for Ratdog tonight....oh man, I wish they had saved that show for me. All I can do is Great Woods this time, but I am some kind of envious of any doing multiple shows. I'll be bringing along my 5 year old son to his 1st show (and my 2 year old daughter). That is very meaningful for me. A real family affair.

Regarding the Bob vs. Phil phoolishness.....I have seen both bands and they are both outstanding. Phil is just the coolest, really keepin' the flame alive . What he is doing with this band is nothing short of monumental and I honor him. Bobby on the other hand has really impressed me with the maturing of his musical vision, as well as his leadership. Ratdog really really rocks! I will always love both of them dearly and I am just mystified by the anti's of either persuasion. We are all so freakin' lucky. Quit your damn complainin' and eat what's on your plate.....and be grateful for it

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Tim Benson (Benceslc) on Thursday, July 19, 2001 - 12:47 am: Edit Post

I agree wholeheartedly w/ dancermantis. Bickering over which band is better is just stupid. It's like comparing apples and oranges. P&F can do things that Ratdog can't do; and Ratdog can do things that P&F can't do. We are lucky that we have two wholly unique musical visions of essentially the same topic. This Bobby vs. Phil thing reminds me of the punk community. Like arguing which band is more punk, who is and isn't a sellout, etc. All that bullshit does is divide the scene, which isn't good. And it's what we have in the post-Dead scene as well. Why can't we just relax from all this crap. We are extremely lucky to have the two bands, and even luckier to have them playing together on the same night! So, just enjoy the music. Be glad that rock n' roll still exists.

Molo & Herring do not sing, just Warren, Rob, & Phil, but Warren is a cross between Brent & pure lion's strength. Rob Barraco has a sweet, easily harmonizable range... & folks can argue Phil's vocal prowess, but I personally love his voice...

If ya have yet to see Bobby post-dead, I say check him out: he DOES do Dead tunes & a bunch of his RatDog classics, as in Blackbird.....

Happy Phillin' Sisters & Brothers~

i love you all

Just a guess bro, I would freak if Phil busted out Wave to the Wind or If the Shoe Fits. And what about Toms Thumb? Bob Weir sure semms to be singing alot of Jerry songs, I have trouble finding my groove in that. So Many Roads, that is just downright wrong! Sorry if I sound like a jerk, just an opinion.
PS I hate my job, does anyone else?

One More note, last year about an hour before Phil's gig they announced the setlist on WZLX. Personnaly I hate the station cause it plays the same boring songs everyday. If it happens this year, I will have to take action!!!

Having been reading the postings lately regarding Weir. What is wrong? Ratdog is a fine ensemble who, in the multiple times I have seen them play have done nothing but amaze me. And as for Bobby playing Jerry tunes- Why not? There seems to be a double standard where it is okay for Phil to bring out Jerry tunes but not for Bobby. Is "So Many Roads" more sacred then "Morning Dew"(which Phil has played). IMO there are certain songs that should have been retired after Jerry's death, such as "Dew", "Brokedown", "Stella", and even "Touch". Let's not knock Bob for showing reverence to one of his best friends by continuing his musical legacy.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Clancy Whigham (Tweeker) on Thursday, July 19, 2001 - 04:05 pm: Edit Post

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I feel the songs Phil is bringing back are more geared towards..., well jamming. Don't get me wrong Phil struugles singing, but his band steps up where his voice leaves off. Morning Dew has wonderful lyrics, but man, that jam explodes at the end. It easy to forget about Phils voice after 10 minute power jam. Stella is a tough one to touch, but at least Warren sings it, he has some soul in his voice which I believe is needed. Brokedown should not be touched, dido for Days Between. Where songs like So Many Roads really built upon those finger picking notes and Garcia letting loose voacally at the end. Personally I think Bob Weir has great stock of his own songs, more specifically his non-dead tunes. His new stuff is nice, great Bob Weir tunes. But I cant listen to Bobby sing Tennesee Jed, Loose Lucy or Loser c'mon, his band does not have the musical fluidity to back up Bob's out of sync voice on dead songs. Also, I don't like Mark Karan, he plays the same lame solos at every show. I understand Bob misses playing these songs, it must suck, it just doesn't flow through me like it used to. Not trying to start a war in here, wondering if anyone else feels this way.
Peace and Love always, getting ready for the northeast 3-pak.

I'll take my lawns seats over the pavilion seats any day. Half the fun of the show is wandering around the crowd and meeting y'all. Plus, if your near "sketchy" people, you can move. My biggest pet peeve is being stuck in reserved seating next to RUDE people who pay no attention to the show and just talk and talk and talk... Especially since you pay more for reserved.

It's now only hours away!!!!!!!

p.s. The side stage is usually up on the left side after the main gates, in a fenced-in wooded area. That's what I remember from a few years ago.

To Tweeker:
I have a special place for Brokedown myself; it was the last Grateful Dead song I ever heard live (encore at the second of two Giants shows in 95).
Despite that I hope to hear it. I don't believe any song is sacred. Lets not let great songs die, keep them alive by playing them. Old and new memories can be shared and blended into one. But then again there is always the chance they screw it up royally... but thats OK too. Have a kind tour. B

Warnings for the Tweeter Center aka Great Woods..went to see Aerosmith there last month, not as many bike cops as i've seen before, but be careful and keep drinks in plastic cups(colored ones) and just be mindful of looking around all night..never know who's watching you! The crowd is usually pretty cool about alerts, so just relax and enjoy.
I heard something about Ratdog takin stage at 430pm and by the way, who are the "Orphics"...i feel like i'm missing out here, please clue me in.
Otherwise, we're off and running for Mansfield, MA at 330-345, tailgate for a while, then inside for the fun and festivities!

Never saw a Dead show but got hooked on live Dead through the GD hour about five years ago. Been buying every thing live, love those Dick's Picks. Caught Phil at the Orpheum in April of 2000, and it changed my life. Saw him with Dylan last summer, caught The Other Ones at the Fleet, two nights at the Orphuem in the fall. Tried to see Rat dog in Worchester but got "burned" no pun intended. dissapointed Phil did not come to Boston this spring, but freaked when I saw the Oddessey Tour line up. Will be at Tweeter,Meadows,Saratoga ,and Hershey with my 18 year old son. KEEP THE MUSIC ALIVE.

My fantasy setlist (or at least I will be hearing this in my head): 1) Passenger - jam - Mountains of the Moon - Caution Jam - Hard 2 Handle - Dark Star v1 - Mason's Children, 2) Jam - Viola Lee - Dk St Jam - Pride of Cucamonga - Dark star V2 - Viola v2 - Blues for Allah - King Solomon's - Viola V3/ enc: Golden Rd - Bid u Gdnt
Oh, yeah, you could substitute Other One for Dark Star. Not that fussy

As for the venues, Greatwoods (that will be the day I call any venue by its new sponsor name) is really harsh in the lot - semi-plain clothes cops/security on bikes and golf carts attempting to sneak up on you. Forget about vending of any kind. Thorough frisk at door. Will go thru EVERYTHING, and WILL bust - a prison bus is kept behind the fence and is filled at every gig. Not a place you want to hang out either before or after. Hartford is not as harsh - some surveillence of lot scene that used to be totally
out of control until massive riots at Dave Mathews in summer of '99. Mostly looking for tanks, that was perceived to be cause of riots (and rightfully so). Saratoga used to be cool, but last year were really cracking down on vending, but OK otherwise. Better off parking in woods than main lot, very difficult to walk between 2 parking areas (DEEP ravine between), so if separated from friends, will not be able to see each other. If inside, they will not allow any food/beverage - including water bottles - inside pavilion. They actually gave me a hard time for having a water bottle that was not the brand they sell (but they let me keep it at the door). Very smarmy ushers - used to classical stuff - expect to be looked down upon. The anything goes place is Camden (Philadelphia is the hometown of the Whippet Mafia, after all).
Enjoy!

it's seems incredible at a time when the music never stops, and phil IS taking the music to the next level that venues are now reported half filled, etc.
what happened to "love is real and not fade away" - have you not heard or seen the recent amazing setlists or witnessed the incredible never before acid jazz jams which are now happening every night from the first note on- not a wasted note or underplayed melody or uninspired moment throughout the shows??
this band is on fire and believe me- see it while it's happening and get out there and support our scene-
not too long ago stadiums could not hold the masses- and i'm sure most are glad it's trimmed down.. in all directions.. and the jump to arena-type venues was a bit excess all of a sudden but if the wheel is turnin'- grab your friends and those "pure deadheads" who may think the scene without jer + band is off.. and come out and support phil as he keeps the scene ALIVE + WELL..

THANK YOU PHIL + FRIENDS>> YOU ARE AMAZING!!!

Woohoo - even my 5 yr. old son is psyched! Though I don't know any of you I am sure I will see many of you. I'll be the one dancin' with the adorable 2 year old......been lookin at setlists trying to come up with some predictions for tomorrow. Hoping for a Franklin's for my boy (on of his favorites)- he says that "roll away the dew" means to push away all the bad stuff. Cosmic Charlie would be simply amazing (and looking like a distinct possibility) - we both love the chorus "Go on home your mama's callin' you" Hell, I'll take whatever I get and love it.

Whitetooth, even if you have pavilion seats, you can go up and chill on the lawn, but not the reverse. Parking lot will be hoppin' with security and cops in golf carts lookin' for trouble. DONT FORGET THE PLASTIC CUPS. If they stop you, they'll search everything, even your car, and they will take it all. Be smart!! I'm really hoping for a sweet crowd tomorrow night. Quick tip for those of you like me who hate the "after show traffic jams"... Don't park in the main lot, park in the lots before Great Woods. Some charge, but it's worth it!! Easy in and Easy out. For me, it's worth the extra $10. At least that's been my experience. Anyways, be kind to all tomorrow night, as we're in for one hell of a LONG night!! -TZ-

Hey guys, this FL Head has a long drive from south Jersey tomorrow. Hopefully I will see you all there. By the way, where is everyone getting together before the show? I will see you there unless something happens with the nail stuck in my tire. It should be all right if it has been in there for a few weeks and you've been driving around a lot right? I just discovered it today. Anyway, someone let me know on the nail question. Well, off to bed, see you guys tomorrow. Look for the black Civic w/ FL tags. Don't be afraid to stop by and say hello, or, you know, bring a tire patch over. Have a good show everyone.

agree agree...cant phil and the guys just play a damn song once in a while? i feel like every song gets deconstructed to the point of nothingness 2-3 times per song! finally it comes back around. these kinds of jams are superb technical and soulful displays, but are such a challenge to absorb that they become tedious after a while. weren't the lyrics and vocal interplay one of the most badass things about the dead? boasting of women and poker and singing of love and the river and the stars and the moon? I guess a band led by a bass player and lacking a true singer is bound to confront these problems, and I agree with an above post. Start playing lounge jazz. Blow 'em away phil.

"....lacking a true singer..."

You must be unfamilliar with work of Warren Haynes. He's about as "true" a singer as they get. Perhaps Phil can replace him with Michael Bolton for fall tour.

Mexically Blues>
Weather Report Suite>
Jam>
The Other One>
Jam>
Estimated Prophet
Phil is absoulutely great.but having Bob out there adding the vocals is the frosting on the cake. Maybe there will be a Crusader Rabbit Stealth Band tour in the future, one can only hope

Great Woods holds 19,000, does any one think this will come close to selling out? I'm planning on going down and scoring some tix in the lot. I called ticketmaster last night and they still have good pavillion seats, but for $40. Pretty steep.

Great Woods shouldn't sellout. Plus, it is a 4:30 start that will keep people away. I too am hoping to just buy a lawn ticket.

Rumor has it that James Taylor is going join for short acoustic set. I stress that is a rumor!

Just a little FYI to pholks...

I've been to two shows so far this summer at Great Woods; Paul Simon and the Allman Bros.

I was neither patted down nor saw anyone patted down at either show. It's kinda understandable with Paul Simon but I was sure they were gonna pat me at Allmans. Unless the scene at the gates looks sketchy I think I'm just gonna go piece-in-pocket!

Have a wonderful time tonight, everyone!

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Mark D.V. Turner (Dancingmantis) on Friday, July 20, 2001 - 10:18 am: Edit Post

A note of caution: if you are planning on getting a ticket at the show be forewarned...I have heard from several folks that they will only sell reserved seats until those sell out (if they do). Since that seems unlikely, don't count on getting lawn tix at the gate. Guess they want to take advantage of people having come all the way to the show. Can you imagine something like that happening?

Only 6 hours and 12 minutes till showtime.....

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Tee Zee (Ztorin) on Friday, July 20, 2001 - 10:28 am: Edit Post

I'd still be cautious crossing the gate. Don't assume they won't pat anyone down. Last year they even made me unfold my blanket, and I was just waiting for the dude to slap on the latex gloves and probe me. Weather is working with us tonight!! weather.com shows the hour by hour forecast as 75 by 4:pm and slowly dropping to 62 by 11:pm, clear skies all day/night long!! Looks like it's gonna be one of those nights.. Maybe we'll get a shooting star!! Make a wish... Surprise guests would be great!!? If James Taylor did actually show up, what do you think they'd do? Scarlet-->Fire & Rain-->Fire???
See y'all on the lawn early to secure my spot...
Hope everyone has a blast tonight. Be kind to all around. I really hope there's no nitrous scene tonight, seems like it's nothing but trouble anytime you see it. Fare the well brothers and sisters...

Scott, Tuesday's posts show Ratdog going on right around 4:30/4:45 and playing for almost 2 hrs. That's just what I read though. Orphics are probably going on right after the gates open on the side stage, but the jury's still out on where that is exactly. If you go to the GW website http://www.tweetercenter.com/boston/seating.asp , I believe the side stage is in the "Garden Cafe" spot on the map.

In regards to buying lawn seats at the box office today, I was at the Area One Festival at Great Woods on Wed. and was able to buy a lawn seat that day at the venue box office, and by the looks of things, the seats certainly weren't sold out. Howdy folks! Just another warning for the people headed to Great Woods, I mean Tweeter Center....

I have seen over 30 shows at the venue and the thing to worry about the most is the parking lot.
a few rules of thumb:

1. Drink Beer (alchohol) in a cup, preferable one that is not clear plastic.
2. Keep the cooler out of site and closed up, this will prevent any imprompto searches by security staff who will be patroling the lot in golf carts...
3. Try to park around the back of the venue, if you are heading in later, you will be able to hear any opening bands you decide to skip and also any sound checks goin on....
4. Be kind !! and enjoy the show !!

See you in Hartford.... any words of wisdom for the Meadows?

Called Great Woods, they will be selling both lawn and reserved tonight. Just thought I would let all the kind heads out there know. I am going to be screaming yahtzee in the lot all night, I too have sweet little one waiting with some cold sierras on ice.
Quick note: I was young when I was able to see the Dead, 25 shows in the last 3 years while attending high school and was playing sports. 7 years ago to the day I saw the best show of those 25. The list might not jump out, but man it was magic, and the High Time... enough said Here it is...
Deer Creek 7/20/94

I Stranger, Peggy-O, BIODTL, High Time, Memphis, Childhoods End, Dont'Cheese

II Box, Samba, LL Rain, Here Comes Sunshine, Corrina>Matillda>D/S>UJB>Miracle, AM DEW!

Who cares what they played for the encore, get this show on tape and it will give you the chills. Thanks for changing my life Jerry, I appreciate it everyday!

Re: P&F vs. Ratdog - Unfortunately, I've
got to disagree with a couple of posts above. Ratdog WAS a decent band that has decended into monotony. I've seen them several times, and they don't improve - same tired setlists, bored band and audience. I'm willing to consider that perhaps Bobby will be inspired by being back on the road with Phil, but I know what I heard from his band in past years. Phil, though, just like a fine wine, keeps getting better all the time, and this lineup is amazing. Better, in fact, than any of the shows that I saw between 92-95 (except for the Philly Unbroken Chain bust-out in 93, but again, that's Phil). Too bad I can't be in Mass tonight, my curiosity has been aroused, but I'll wait for Merriweather next week and settle for the Frog Brigade opener.

That's funny because my experience with Ratdog since my first show a week and a half after Jerry died (which was actually Weir/Wasserman) is that he is getting better and better...just my opinion, but he is definately playing many more songs than he was six years ago and wrote a whole new album's worth just 2 years ago.
His band is far more comfortable, I think, then they were before, and if you go to ratdog.org you will see that they were originally only playing one set shows, and now play 2 (or if you saw him between 6 and 2 years ago)...the point being that their list is growing . But you feel/see what you do.

I have a hard time getting past the name "Ratdog". I still have to call them Bob & Rob or Weir & Wasserman. Really who can proudly say, "I'm going to see Ratdog"?

The shows that I've seen have been hit or miss from the outset. When I saw them in the fall struggling with Maggie's Farm I had this strange revelation "A lot of these songs are the ones I used to wait through until it was Jerry's turn again. Wait! Oh No! Jerry's not going to have a turn!" I better take it for what it is, in this very moment...

As it's been said every time this subject comes up. When it comes to music, just with all art forms it's subjective. And can not bee compared.

Philly - Absolutely, That's why we kept going back. 110 shows out of a 30-year history all of them could have been a hit or a miss. 110 shows between 94 - 95 your odds for a miss just increased. The point is its subjective. A comparison between one band vs. another is ludicrous.

What about tonights show?
How was it? Was the band tight ? How was the Jams? How was the crowd? Into it or not?
This is supposed to be a show review forum isnt it? Wheres my miracle ANSWERS??
Another thing, how has the crowd been thruout the tour? Has it been an older Dead crowd or has it been a bunch of lost youngens that need to be converted? Are tix selling well?
We are going to hit the Phil and ABB, and what Im hearing on this is that tix arent selling that well. We dont have to worry about a cancellation do we?

Well first I would like to say hello to everyone, I am new here to this forum ( as a contributer that is ). Just got in from the show at the Tweeter Center which is about 1 hour from home base here on Cape Cod. OK that said, Bobby came on at exactly 4:30 with ElPaso and there was only about 300 people inside! EVERYONE thought that the show was 4:30 Orphius, 6:00 Bobby, 8:00 Phil. Well I don't think anyone saw Orphius since they played on a side stage around 3 pm. I got to my seat halfway through Music never stopped and I was amazed how empty it was. The guy next to me asked if there was a lot of folks outside, I said yeah about 20,000 enjoying BBQ and frisbee. By the time Ratdog was finishing up around 6:45 it was just filling up. They sounded alright, Mark Karan was his usual self (don't take that wrong, he just - well always sounds the same, LOL. ) and Bobby sounded great. :o{ I missed the first 5 songs and I heard that El Paso was awesome as the opener. I would like to have heard AFlowers ( a Bobby Darin tune for you old timers like me ), first time I saw him do that was the scare the children tour with Wasserman acoustic. After the break Phil and his band opened with a nice jam/groove into HCSunshine. Bobby came out and joined for FOTD/Watchtower/FOTD jam. The ending was a bit odd, they finished fotd, stopped, and then repeated the last verse, stopped, repeated a 3rd time. Kept thinking it was done, kind of neat. As Bob was leaving the stage he got a huge ovation as he stood with Phil then he warmly hugged Phil and everyone went nuts, it was great to see:) The second set ( listed in a post above ) was great, Sunshine of your love was groovin and a huge fan favorite. They played a lot of improv tonight, at times it seemed you were always waiting for them to get back into something and it would just fizzle for a while and well, you get the picture. Of couse this is just my opinion, they really did sound great though even with the 10 minute "space jams " between almost every song. Nuff Said. Terrapin was different, it came back around to a real groove when they got into Inspiration, it was like a boogie version, new for me anyway. NOW ...Stella... that was truly awesome, I must say I closed my eyes for a minute and I could really feel the song, I was thinking of you know who. We headed out during lovelight, it takes 3 hours to get out of the parking lot there if you don't get moving. But you could here it fine and it sounded great. Phil made a mention during the show that it was dedicated to someone named Mimi who just passed away, a member of the GD family. Anyone know her name or the rest of that story? Also right before lovelight Phil made his speech about organ donors and asked everyone to give blood, he said he was lucky to be here at all and thanked everyone for their loyal and undying support for their music. Well I am not as technical as most of the posts here but there is my 2 cents worth, peace all.

That was it! I was there! Got there late for
bobby, sorry I missed Artificial Flowers :) but I
was quite impressed with Ratdog... I had
sworn them off several years ago after I left
one of their shows feeling worse than before,
but I have to hand it to Bob, he's gotten a good
band toghether. Anyone who wants to
compare it to P&F is just plain crazy. It was a
particular treat to hear the full WRS, which was
done quite well... he also does the let it grow
power jam that got put in there in the late
70's... along with the whole preulde part...
When I got there, the pavillion was about 2/3
full, and filled up towards the end. Real
enthusiastic crowd for bobby, he got massive
applause afterwards.

The Quintet came out ragin, with a here
comes sunshine opener as the sun shone in
over the sandy wastes of the lawn into our
hearts and minds... Bob came out about 10
mins into the jam which led into FOTD. Not the
best version ever, though it was good to see
Bob and Phil share the stage again... missed
the crusader rabbit gig by a hare so I was glad
to see it. Phil and Bob traded off verses on the
FOTD, and Bob deserves some sort of award
for being up there when Phil sang it... I'm not a
detractor of Phil's unique vocal stylings, but
this wasn't the most elegant fit. Jam went into
hot Watchtower, with Bob leading the band
into the verses by throwing his arm up in the
air. Went back into FOTD and somebody
fucked up and I think Bob sang the wrong last
verse... full stop, bobby laughs and counts the
band back into it. Audience is forgiving, Phil
and Bob hug... happiness all around. Short
break thereafter, was afraid for a second that
they were going away for setbreak.. but then
into an absoultely ripping celebration. I think I
first heard this one in florida on the spring tour
and then again at the berkeley greek. I think
this song is maturing nicely, and the band
seems comfortabel with it. Into Cumberland
which got insanely psychadelic in the middle...
73-74 pitb meltdown style with warren taking it
OUT in a big way... what song is this...who am
I? Where are my dougnuts!?!!? But back into
cumberland, end of set. Whew!!! Got a stub
from the super-cool couple next to me (black
jack-straw t-shirt) so ran up and got my friend
Katy @ the setbreak. Back down in time for the
opener... super-jammed intro to the 2nd set... I
was hearing Night of 1000 Stars, woman next
to me thout UJB but meandered off into
Forests of Fennario. This one has also
evolved, which a good thing compared to the
muddy soup version I first heard on NYE.
Could make out some of the lyrics.. have to
read 'em I guess. They came to a complete
stop after forests, during which I ran to the
bathroom by the entrance next to which were
these speakers blaring the most horrible
music possible.. some sort of dance-pop that
sounded like a corporate logo. I hope there
wasn't some poor dude on a bad 'shroom trip
huddled up in the bushes near those
speakers... but emerged from the pits of hell
into unbroken chain! I've heard phil do this one
so well with P&F, from 4/99 @ the warfield on,
espeically one really good one at the beacon
with the pevar/herring/barraco linup. Damn
fine band that was, but THE quintet ripped into
sunshine of your love. Hello Warren!! This guy
sure has some energy, but then so does the
rest of the band. Phil taking a real muscular
tone and doing some nice chord work.

Into another long jam with hints of a reggae
dark-star into is it terrapin... no, it's just going
to be one of those times when they ALMOST
play the song you think you're about to hear
but when it happens there it is... whoumph!
Terrapin... here phil's vocals really shone, this
is a tune that I like hearing him sing.... has he
changed the key any of you musical folks
know?

Oh, I almost forgot... some time in the first set I
think Phil announced that he was dedicating
the performance(or their part of it) to the
memory of Mimi Farina, who just passed
away, and Phil said something about her
bringing music where it was needed the
most... in prisons and something else... God
bless her. (loosely quoted)

cont'd

But back into the almost terrapin that does
become terrapin.. long nice jam meanders
into a stop on a dime into Stella Blue. Perfectly
sung by Warren, he's really nailed the lyrics
and phrasing to this one... It's always crazy to
me that Jerry and Hunter wrote that back in...
72? 73? because they lyrics speak so
eloquently from a latter day jerry. Like a little
window forward in time, a moment frozen in
the end of the beginning. But into a nice stella
jam, that morphed into a few other strange
beasts before going into the double-timed
inspiration lyrics... locomotive all cylnders
firing into an interstellar orbit. And just when
you thought it had left... double ultra
whoomph.. Golden Road! I don't think I
danced as hard to this one as I have to others,
but the common thread is that they all make
me get up and move and feel happy. What a
great song to revive... this is one the dead
couldn't have done justice to... The could have
pulled it off in 78 maybe, but the the sheer
amount of cocaine they would have needed to
do it at that time would be enough to buy a
small south american country, and the vibe
would have been too weird anyway... but this
band RIPS through it every time I've heard it.. I
remember the first time at the wiltern in LA up
in the balcony dancing madly in the aisle with
fellow intrepid travelllers... but this version was
no slouch. It reminds me of Celebration...
same character speaking at different points in
his life. Nice jimmy jam, though during the
show I would completey lose track of which
guitarist was doing what... like phil says in
Anthem to beauty... fingers on a hand. A
packed great woods lights their lighters, in
good east coast tradition... reminded me of
those old boston garden dead shows
crowd-wise, which was a good thing, drunken
idiots and all. The nice part though was with a
full set of Ratdog and Two sets of Phil all the
rowdies had rowdied themselves out so they
didn't ruin my stella.

Phil comes out and gives one of the longest
and most meandering liver speeches, talked
about saving the life of somebody you would
never meet (twice!) and at some point even
apolologized for being so long winded. Band
Intros... Lovelight! I have to say that this was
always a personal low-point for me at dead
shows when bobby sang it, because the
poppy arrangement always got in the way for
me. Warren does it more bobby blue bland
than Pig or Wier style, and it was a scorcher,
working the crowd once more to make sure
we were thoroughly sated. And afterwards
someone (Phil?) says "And Leave it On!" a la
Live Dead. Louis comes on with What a
Wonderful world, and I hitch a ride with this
crazy wasted guy in a jeep playing the last disc
of so many roads (on tape) jam->days
between, whiskey in the jar, so many roads.
Take the T to the Park St. Station, really not
quite sure where the hotel is, and discover the
most AMAZING mural in the train station there,
done by a woman whose name I already
forget in 1978 though it seemed like it was the
type of work that several people's lifetimes
went into... ceramic and words weaving
around through 8 or 10 big panels, describing
the history of the subway and boston, with the
most incredible little nooks and crannies,
everything flowing into the next. I almost could
still be there but got a little self conscious that
folks might notice the crazy haired guy (open
jeep ride) with the saucer eyes gawking at the
mural. But it was wonderful!!! Made me feel
like I had gone to full-scale world class art
museum where the curators had aesthetic
sensibilities unusually similar to mine. I would
have to say that I would reccomend going to
see the quintet first, because they seem a little
more impermanent, but this mural was
almost as good as a show! I know elements it
have already worked themselves into my
unconscious mind and will manifest
themselves in dreams and visions... or maybe
it's the other way around. I don't know, I just
don't know, if I'm goin' back again.

-H

Don't know what the big deal is about Phil and Friends is . Caught the whole Ratdog set and they smoked.People are alot more critical about Bobby than Phil.Phils set was kind of weak except for stella.Whats with the Puff Daddy version of Terrapin?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Peter Dunn (Integraldance) on Saturday, July 21, 2001 - 04:20 am: Edit Post

just settled in from a nice ride home and killer
night at Phil and amigos. Thought it was
amazing with great music, nice scene, A-level
vibes, great folks and the following stellar
moments: Warren on Stella blue, he nailed it
with aching tender accessiblity and soul
openness, nice soloing, Phil on Lady with a
Fan as his whole great being was really in the
notes and chords of the song, the whole band
and crowd in riotous celebration and rev
boogie on encore Lovelight (it could have
gone on and on - simply timeless and
awesome), the whole band on Terrapin part
two, where I can't explain for those who
weren't there what happened, yet it was
spot-on nice as far as I was concerned. The
crowd was great on the whole, sharing good
vibes and groovin' and being open and kind
and engaged, and such. Bobby's presence
onstage with Friends was great, though his
mike I think was a little off, and I think he could
do a whole show with them easily and up their
whole thing an even higher notch. Kudos to
Rob Barroco (sp.) for kind and expansive and
full vocals on Here Comes Sunshine, radiated
through the whole place.

My guesss is that there were about
17,000-18,000 in all, as the pavillion was sold
out and the lawn looked pretty full, though not
too packed.

I saw in the area of 40 dead shows and many
jerry bands, and I have to say I have as much
excitement, and expectancy when I go to Phil
shows and Further shows now as when I
went to old shows, and agree with the 110'ers
above - results are about the same on the
whole - largely on the mark, some amazing
shows, some slowbies, a little off and here
and there, and by and large great music and a
great time.

I can't tell you enough about how good it felt to
be at this show. Where else can one go and
openly talk and celebrate with strangers,
unhesitatingly share smiles, experience
numerous moments of
musical/psychological/spiritual communion
between a band and an audience, here old
classics and new ideas/renditions, and have
a guy selling fresh quesadillas from his grill
120 feet from you car at shows end. Gotta tell
ya I believe this is great stuff, and if you leave
your ideas and expectations at the door and
open to the new current spirit moving through
the air, shake your body as much as it so
wants itself, and ride the groove, you may find
some nice soul satisfaction.

Grateful they're coming to Boston so often,
though sorry So Many Roads is not real close.

If you want to see Bobby and crew, get there at
the start b/c he goes 430-630, and then it's
Phil from 7:10 til 11 p.m. I miscommunicated
with a friend and we got there missed Bobby.
Would have loved to seen them play.

Believe most of the reviews I scanned above
were right on the mark. Great show.

Final moments to also convey, the crowd was
"Golden Road" ecstatic as the band romped
through that number and its
oneness/freedom/joy engulfed the entire
venue. The crowd and the band also rocked it
out, lowered it down and reveled in large parts
of Unbroken Chain, and the hard-to-imagine
riffs and jammin on Cumberland Blues, (not to
mention the singing) was tight/open and
delightful. Celebration is also a really nice
newer tune that is a heart-warmer with a nice
feeling.

If they were playing here again this summer,
I'd be back as major priority. BTW, there are
some great photos of this show (about 12-15),
if you click on the setlists part of this website
on main page, and then click on the Ratdog
setlist.

Love to all you out there in grooveland.

grateful.

who cares about the set list, the show was awesome! We got in just as Phil was takin the stage, needless to say, missed Bob completely except when he came out with Phil for a bit. Otherwise, the show was fantastic, the crowd its usual mellow and plenty of groovin going on! Only thing missing was Jerry, but I"m sure he was there in spirit with the rest of us.

Carol,

You have missed a very importan part of Phil's resurgence into music. Phil was diagnosed with the hepatitus c virus about 3 years ago? ..help me here people...and almost died, until a very nice boy came along, and made Phils wishes for a transplant come true. Phil has been a staunch evangelist for the cause since.

peace

I did want to posta review here, because I went to Tweeter on awhim last night, missed Bob completely but drove up from CT and got tix at the BO and waltzed right in. Excellent venue! Friendly beer maids ( and chaps) and really no waiting for the restroom, everything was accessible.

The show: a solid B in my book. Phil was hot, the band seemd juiced after a days rerst, but the setlist was a little week, in terms of length. I mean, do we really neeed to make an entire second set out of Terapin? Lovelight was of the hottests I have ever heard, and sunshine of your love was really powerful. Cumberland was also a highlight. Other than that, I was very happy but nothing else blew me away...Hartford tonight, I m calling Shakedown opener, and eyes opens the set two.

This all in all was a swell dance concert.

Needless to say I was glowing when I heard the opening notes to Here Comes Sunshine! No reviews here, just wanted to say that I was really feeling the crowd. The parking lot scene was beautiful (except for the power trip cops trying to fill quota's). So many kind souls. I met so many great people last night! Good vibes, good groove, great music!

Could have done without the $3 waters, $5.75 beers or $10 burrito's though!

Other then that.... Magic was in the air!

So just a quick thanks to everyone for touching my soul and making for such a great evening!

if you want to check out a little about mimi farina and bread and roses follow the links on the setlist page..i'd bet she at least partially inspired Phils community service ideas..Bread and Roses benefits were at the Greek Theatre, Berkeley.

here's a song sung by mimi:
http://members.tripod.com/~SingingBear/breadnroses.html
"As we come marching, marching come join our rally call,
For the struggle of the homeless is the struggle of us all.
No more the drudge and idler, ten that toil where one reposes,
But a sharing of life's glories, Bread and Roses.

Our souls shall not go craving from birth until life closes,
Hearts starve as well as bodies, give us bread bur give us roses."

had a great time at the tweeter center. security was tough in the parking lot(as usual) but if you kept your beer in a cup and everything else hidden then you didn't have a problem. caught the second part of ratdog's set--they sounded good. truckin and new speedway both had a good groove to them. as far as the quintet goes they sounded as good as ever. unbroken chain was good and seeing weir on stage with bassmaster p for the fotd-watchtower-fotd was great. celebration is my favorite new phil song. i wouldn't mind seeing it everynight. made some new friends on the lawn and had a good vibe going all day. next stop-saratoga cant wait

Last nites show rocked from start to finish! I was so glad to see Mr. Weir and company come out to the stage and start things off with one of my all time Dead Tunes "El Paso" It sounded great being played acoustic and then one of Bobby's Strings broke on his axe. But no big deal he finished up the tune and then things just got better and better! The Ratdog set just absolutley rocked! What more could I ask for a beautiful Artifical Flowers a smoking Corrina and then the meat and potates of the set kicked in with Stranger>Music>She says>Truckin' Wow! It just sounded amazing and completly blew my mind! When I thought things couldn't get better they pulled out SpeedWay Boogie>Jam>WRS>Let it Grow! The WRS made me feel like I was listening to a Dead Tape from 77. The only thing that was missing was Donna's Vocals!! After Bass/Drumz which I thought was a little short by Ratdog Standards they broke out into Ashes and Glasses into NFA. Simply amazing work! I know a lot of you who are true Phil Phans think Ratdog is just a little better than a Dead Cover band. But come on you gotta give it up for him! This over 2 hour setlist absolutley Rocked. If I sat down with Bob Weir myslef and told him what I wanted to hear I couldn't have come out with a better setlist myself!
The Phil and Frinds sets were amazing also! It was great to see both Bob and Phil and stage together again! Phil n Frinds sounded better than ever! I only hope that the two of you will perform together again!
Thankyou to Bob and Phil for providing this great show! Looking forward to the both of you coming back to the Boston Area again soon!

The parking lot scene was a veritable tragedy for some. The piggies booted family from show for having their tarp out too far into the fairway of Shakedown Street! Those pigs suck in Mass.

I thought last nights show was good, but certainly not great. Bobby's set was very tight from the second jam in truckin' through the rest of the show. WRS was a nice treat and Speedway was a surprise. They started off sloppy (although the El Paso was night) but finished very very strong.

Phil's sets were somewhat of a disapointment. As I said, I felt the show was good, but not great. I guess it is a testament to the talent of this band to say that I was disapointed with a good show. It seemed to me that Warren's vibe (...don't get this wrong...I love Warren) took over and led the band into a gloomy kind of Gov't Mule feel for most of the show. The theme of the show seemed to be light (Here Comes SUNshine, Lay of the SUNflower, SUNshine of your love, loveLIGHT, etc) But the FEELING was definitely not light. The jams were very loose and the band didn't really seem to come together until the Terrapin (even the Unbroken was a little loose). The jams up to Terrapin mostly seemed to devolve into nothiness with Warren and Jimmy moving down scales together (again and again and again). Phil was far to quiet in the mix and Rob was not as active as usual.

Sorry to be critical....like I said, it was a good show, but I had a first-timer with me and would have REALLY like him to see them in full glory his first time (Lucky for him I took him along to Hartford as well and he got a real taste of what these guys can do)

Is Forests of Fenario the same tune as "Lay of the Sunflower" listed in the official setlist on this site?

I know they were singing the words "forest of fenario", but it was my first time hearing the song, so I can't say the title for sure.

For Phil, this show was weak. Again, that's for Phil. It had many peaks and great moments, but isn't in my top Phil shows. In fact, it's near the bottom of the stuff I attended. The colaboration between Bob and Phil was really rough. Pathetic may be a better word. Nothing like the China Rider at MI or the Cassidy from Hartford. It was also the first venue since WI that was really packed. Not as much room to dance as other shows this tour. Also had the quietest lawn of any show since WI. Still had a great time, of course, but this will be one of the last tapes I hunt down from this tour.

I'm with Jake all the way - Nice review - no need to apologize for being critical - I remember a time were every song and every tuning and every car in the parking lot was AMAZING - we all go though it - I think I was eating clowns at the time or gooney birds or was it.... - As time goes on I think we all get a more critical ear. There is a interesting reference to Jean-Luc-Ponty in Frank Zappa's Book that reminded me of Warren that night... over and over again - Rat Dog was hot, WRS was a real keeper and there were a lot of fine moments in the Phil set, but....

Had a great time at Great Woods, overall an
excellent day of music. I was not overly
impressed with Ratdog, I had higher expectations
based on reviews I've read elsewhere. The biggest
problem I have with them is the band just isn't
that good. Mark Karan has very little interesting
to say with his leads, and the rest of the band
doesn't seem to have quite enough energy for my
tastes. Bobby sounded good himself, and the set
list was fairly nice, but outside of the WRS->Let
It Grow the set did very little for me (although I
really enjoyed the WRS).

Phil's show was well played and had numerous high
moments but wasn't necessarily the best show I've
seen from him. Not that it was a bad show, just
that it was a good show not up to the highest
possible level. As someone posted earlier, it is
a testement to how good this band is that after
Friday's show I can sit here and say it was good
but I've seen better from this band. Highlights
for me included Cumberland and the Terrapin/Stella
Blue combo at the end. Plus, the Golden Road was
positively awesome, and Lovelight was a great
choice for the encore.

We had great seats for this show (2nd row, dfc),
and it was really cool to watch the band working
from that vantage point. They all look like they
are having a blast up there, especially Rob. I
could also faintly here Phil calling out
instructions from time to time, although it was
hard to hear exactly what he was saying.

The FOTD->Watchtower->FOTD with Weir was fun, but
somehow felt a little forced. Like this was the
"obligatory" jamming with Bobby rather than being
spontaneous. Oh well, it was still fun and it was
great to see Phil and Bobby jamming together
again. Weir looked like he was having a good time.

Wwwwoooowwww! Back in NoVA now...it was tough laying down in my own bed last night, thinking, "Wonder what Phil is playing RIGHT NOW!"
Jeez. What a great weekend stint I fell into. Friday at the Tweeker (sic) was fun, but definitely had a mellow, understated, reverential second set. I was redeemed in my girl's eyes because I had heard the Lovelight tease all night from Phil and they finally kicked it off for the encore. And Warren is MADE for singing bluesy stuff like that. Great ending. Stella left me a little flat, honestly, though it was a beautiful, respectful rendition. Slow, too. Sit down and close your eyes time.
Gotta say that the Quintet is fuckin' GREAT! Herring and Haynes were getting all over each other's phrases in the second set...playing each other's notes and intentionally leaving us all wondering where one fretboard ended and another one began. Stuff to make a guitarist want to practice moremoremore.
Why can't Herring get more volume in the mix? I can always hear him, but definitely behind Warren. Herring played some WICKED fast runs throughout the night. There was a lot of chromatic, descending, falling-down-the-rabbit-hole weaving lines...a WHOLE lot o'notes.
Barraco is truly a joy, as well. He harmonizes with Warren perfectly. Bouncing up and down on his bench...lovin' it up. What a lucky and talented guy!!!
I missed the dedication to Mimi, so maybe that explains the tenderness of the second set.
My shot at the theme of the night: love and light--->Here Comes Sunshine (with a glaring sunset right in the band's face), Sunshine of Your Love, Lovelight, etc. are just the more obvious references.
All in all a wonderful show for me and my lady...and still well worth the 8 hour, nine state trek to be there! And Hartford to look forward to...

Okay,

I have been reading the reviews in lurk mode now for the past few days since the shows. I honestly think that Great Woods was an 8 not a five. The first set was a little sub par. But song selection or not I thought the entire second set was blazing. I won't go into specific details but I thought they jammed the tunes out impeccably well. I was fifth row center and could watch the interplay on the stage. The band was clearly loving it. I will take a monumental version of any song in the Grateful Dead Canon over a badly performed chestnut anyday. I will give this show a B for the First Set and and A for the second set. So it averages out to a B+ in my little grade book.

Gotta love the New England Crowd!!! I caught the entire west coast run and I have to say these were better. Sorry you west coast heads. But the east coast is a much better place to hear this band. West coasters are too mellow. The band needs a little outpouring of enthusiasm to help them along.
How bout that revival of the "Tears of a Clown Jam" They played it up and down the west coast. Was this the first time they jammed it since then?

Thank you GREAT WOODS!

It's been a few days now. I'm a bit late, but I got some spare change to throw on this ol heap of opinions.

lot scene was tough. on my way to meet some folk at the flagpole, saw two cars getting gone through and everyone getting patted down. on my way back ten minutes later, both cars were dead quiet. like a ghost town. everyone got carted away. then, down the row from me, I saw a group of kids get busted twice by two different sets of cops, all within 20 minutes. one for underage drinking (everything got confiscated), the other for possession (bag was dumped out on the pavement, stamped on, then soaked with water). The kids were cuffed and taken away. welcome to mansfield. those fuckers.

the crowd was wild. tons of energy, but not always properly directed. lots of drinking. lots of slopiness. lots of agression. that's boston for you. but it's not pleasant to deal with. I was 5th row center. halfway through the second set, my female friend feels wetness splatter on her shoes and legs. she turns to see a quite large flacid penis urinating within a foot of her. this guy was barely conscious and had no idea what he was doing. he put it all away after he got smacked on the chest.

on a lighter note....I was unexpectedly moved to see bobby play with phil. did anyone else see phil give bob a kiss as they hugged and walked off the stage? I can almost swear that happened.

overall, the show was uneven. it didn't gel as a whole. it wasn't cohesive and it didn't always flow. it was certainly below-average phil (but we all know that their average show is unfuckingbeleivable!). the jams between songs were a little unfocused and meandering. there was much musical and energetic tension.

that being said, it was also a remarkably emotional show. there was passion everywhere. between phil and bob, the dedication to mimi farina, the long and heartfelt donor rap, the song selection, two wonderful warren ballads, and especially phil's voice which was particularly impassioned on unbroken chain and terrapin...such warm, deep, textured tones, breathing new life and wisdom into these old gems. (can't beleive the globe music guy -- steve morse -- said that phil's vocals on these two songs in particular were the show's lowpoints. where the fuck was he sitting?)

the psycheldelic cumberland breakdown was insane. sunshine of your love was nailed perfectly...thank you warren. (clapton would be hard pressed to pull off a more successful version...he might need a tape of this for a reminder of how this song is meant to be played.) the jamming highlight came out of terrapin before they reeled it back in for a tender stella blue. golden road sounded like candy. lovelight was inspired with immense energy.

then there was hartford.....

Okay back to the whole work thing(THIS SUCKS!)
We left Friday @ 4:00 on a ride that should have taken 1 hour and 15 minutes took 2.5 hours. Got into the lot and sure as shit the blue shirts in golf carts were out bustin balls. Did have too much time to hang so dipped sassy and headed in for the 3rd row center(direct center) as soon as we were heading down there the band came on and the place went wild. HC Sunshine seemed appropiate although I wanted Shakedown(thank you SPAC) then Bobby coming out for FOTD was great and was awesome to see Bobby and Phil next to each other>Watchtower which was beer time for me. Came back for Celebration Which was phine and then Cumberland which smoked. Set break hanging with about 10 phriends gorgeous evening. 2nd set Lay of the Sunflower (not familiar with) Unbroken Chain this was my first and I woke up singing it the next day fabulous>Sunshine of your love (Warren!!) Then I think this next part was the cream of the crop Lady with a fan>Stella Blue> Terrapin> Golden Road this was unbelieveable!!! Screaming yahtzee and then some. And for the Lovelight this is by far the best one that I have seen and wow did I get my rocks off!! Thank YOU Phil & Friends for a great show to start my weekend! Now off to Hartford review...Oh 2nd set Hello Hartford!!!!!

It has been a week and now the time is right to review this show.

Plan early and get there late...

Didn't have time to enjoy the scene, no shakedown at all??? I miss the massive preshow drum circles ... Anyways, I'm not to waste the time ranting about the parking lot...

We get to the gates at 4:00 PM, almost no one going in, so I stand in amazement, toting the little one on my back and attempt to go in. Lady who is checking our bags says that we can't bring in fruit that we cut up for my son... turn around and eat it under the shade of some maples, not having the chance to enjoy it. Attempt number two to get in, yields no frisk and we make our way to the grass. We pick a nice site and sit for about two seconds before the little one decides to explore the whole venue, dad duties call. Sometime during one of our runs up and down the hill bobby starts up with el paso... little one is in delight and dances as faast as his two year old legs can take him. However the el paso is a tad slow but nicely acoustic. It gets chaotic in the middle with the broken string deal and some yucky feeedbbaaaacck from bob's guitar. The vocals are tight and things progress. A double ending with out much flare leaves me a bit shaken. Bob puts all fears to rest with an incredible rendition of Artifical Flowers. Happy happy...
Corrina, WOW WOW WOW WOWOWOWOW, my son is charged up and ripping up the concourse and beer tents... hopefully he will not make this a habit later on...hahahaha. Anyways, we play in the sand and play with bubbles, where the heck are all the other bubble people? It's a fine time and we are having a grate day. Bobby's set simmers down with an auto pilot stranger and music. She said is ok as well. Loose lucy fun but no great shakes. But Truckin is tight but missing the true E-Bombs of Phil, I look around a realize the place is getting fuller but still tons of space to chace the little ace around... THEN COMES....
Weather Report Suite...SWEETNESS AND LIGHT
It's 1974, well maybe not, but damn... why didn't the dead revive this???? I guess the only good thing that came from the fat guy's passing was the boldness that the surviving members got in song selection. YEAH YEAH, there was not that wonderfully fluid oversoloing but, close my eyes and I'm almost there... The Let It Grow "jam" was tight and decent, losing it for a couple measures to explore some otherone territory but coming back around to close it proper. I did not pay too much attention to the Ashes and Glass>NFA as the little one was down on the hardtop raising hell with the phones and the vendors. He managed to snag out some bananas from the daquiri blenders, so that makes up for the lost fruit...

Phil's set coming next....

So now we come to the point of the show where all the anticipation and anixety will be released, or so I hoped. My wife and I both felt that Bobby would be hard to top but Phil's friends would be ample to do so... We had a nice break and met another family playing in the sand, the kids went at it and had a good old time. By the end of the show there were several kiddies grouped together and everyone was chill. We were to the left side and ready for the onslaught.

The opening jam had some beauty to it but not much in dynamics, it kept coming back to a mountain Jam type theme with some hints at theotherone and china doll before breaking away into HCS... very nice and very tight yet no ground breaking stuff... still better than most of the weak to tepid versions that the dead pulled out in the mid nineties. As the final Jam began to alleviate, Bobby walked out to a nice ovation and contributed to the jam before Jimmy herring steered it into FOTD. FOTD was a bit sloppy but pretty fast, not really exciting for these ears... dancable however. Bobby's verses were good while phils were solid. Somewhere before the end of the song in the last solo spot Bobby began to play with watchtower, Jimmy picked up on it and wham bang there we go. In one instant, the show went from misha-misha to plus caliber. Not the excaliber but 30-.06 caliber. Watchtower smoked and bobby nailed the lyrics. Made me smile, as this is one of the forgotten gems from the dead repitore of cover songs. Finally we found ourselves back in FOTD with an energized jam and double...whoops...triple ending. hmmmmmm this reminds me of something. Bobby leaves with a hug and kiss on the cheek to Phil.

After a few moments, Celebration starts up... Blown away was I, like a whirling dervish, I could not have been happier until my wife pulled me out of the clouds of sunshine and light to tell me that someone made off with our water!!! What? Pisser city... We went off to pay the reapers price of3.50 per bottle to make sure the little guy was happy. Wow 10.50 for three bottle of water, yippy damn mother#@%&ers. They actually smile when they hand you back your 9.50 change... At least there were monitors displaying what the PLAF boys were doing.

Got back from lines and bathrooms to finish off what sounded to be an incredible cumberland blues.
During break I notice at least four people being medically assisted out of the scene, man that sucks. I connected eyes with a guy on a stretcher with him being strapped from head to toe to the stretcher. His eyes wild, my wife put her hand out and says it'll be alright, the medics push her hand away and cart him off under the faded light. Please be careful of what you do out there, be respectful of the scene and your own scene, we don't need any worse of a name for ourselves. Ah hell, what do I know, I'm just a "touch head", shoot I'm being hypocritical...

Second set opens with a jam with lots of twists and turns, much tighter than the opening of the first set, finally it sounds like china doll but unfolds into forest of fennario. WOW, great job by Warren Haynes, nice tight solo and wonderful tranisition into Unbroken Chain... Perfect. mighty thunder bass and huge bolts of lighting emmiting from the big middle jam. Yikes, this is the best unbroken chain I've ever heard and I was there for the first couple. looping into jam we catch hints of the other one and china doll again. the Jam gets furious and boils into Sunshine. Although well played, it came no where near the ones I heard Eric Clapton play back in the early 90s in Mansfield. Warren belts it out with authority but the jams during it get too phish like for my taste but return to the theme seamlessly, pretty tight. The final jam drifts into Lady with a phan. opps, fan. Very good, very long jam in the middle with lots of beauty, I know this terripan is going to be large and thunderous. Oh boy, this is going to surpass the plaf show in augusta back in nov of 99. Maybe it will be on par of march 90 knickerboxer version (YEAH RIGHT) I am drooling in xtc. Unfortunately??? the song gets left into a jam and once again we come across the otherone, darkstar, mountain jam, and china doll before (I think) stella blue.... MAGNIFICENT... WHOOO HOOO, may I be forever grateful... Not as good as Jerry belting it out in the desert of zona back in 94 but damn good!. happy am i. the rest of the set was good and but not like stella. Thanks. Then to the horrors of my ears a supercharged terripan finishes the suite... I don't like this version but hell, I am picky.

Finally this break neck tromp through terripan land leads into my first ever Golden road... OK it was supercharged like terripan but it was awesome... lots of voltage and crazy fun.... with my son sleeping in his stroller, all was spinning spinning spinning. happy heads we are.....

Lovelight was good but it was too full of warren's spidery leads, lots of fun however, but at this point they could have play vogue and made me ok to leave... If I sound disapointed, I wasn't, just let down a little... but that was to be resloved at CT... a different planet all together....

7/20/01 Tweetah Centah-Mansfield, Mass.

On 7/19 at 10:00 I gave LadyTC a hug & kiss goodbye, walked the Spazmonster one more time and took off for Mansfield. Well it was a really long drive for me but WAY worth it. As I got close to Mass. I played phone tag with one Cryptical J. Sockman( Now there’s a vanity plate) whom I was going to meet for the first time and then tour with. I got there just as they opened the lot so the flag was waving very close to the gates of the venue. It was weird the guy right next to me was a sometimes zoner so right away I was in good company. However many in the lot I saw were so not as fortunate, it wasn’t even 5 minutes after I parked before I saw people getting busted for various things. The vending was a carry with you or else sort of affair. This was definitely back on the East Coast and watch your ass country to be sure!

Ratdog- What can I say about these guy’s that hasn’t been said already….Nothing. I was trying to get with the dog but just can’t. The hard driving factor from PLQ just plain dusts away the softer & gentler Bob stuff, IMHO. There were moments of coolness none the less. Nuff said.

On to the Show!

Phil Lesh Quintet Set 1: Right from the start this show sounded Great! The opening jam was tight and very up-tempo, when the H.C. Sunshine came around I was ready for one hot show. During the H.C.S. I could see Rob starting to get off in a big way and taking every one with him. As they jammed out of H.C.S. Bobby walks out to a huge round of applause and without a break they go into Friend of the Devil. This is one of the tunes that has been Phil-A-Sized and this version was no different. The addition of Bobby gave me a nice trip down memory lane, when they fired into the Watchtower we got the full-on trip down the cheesy, saliva flinging, hot sauce highway! Bob was playing it up for all it was worth. The transition back to F.O.T.D. was awkward, and the additional rhythm guitar was kind of in the way. Once they got back into it full on is the only way to describe it and when it was over and Bobby took off he was rewarded with a giant crowd Love-Fest for his time. After a short break to remove Bobby’s gear the boys fired up a Celebration. What a grate tune this is & how diverse, each time I hear this tune it seems a little different. This version was a shorter but hot version none the less. Once through Celebration there was a short little jammy thing to take us into what may become the definitive PLQ version of Cumberland! HOT as hell and about 14 minutes long, there may be longer versions out there but I doubt they’d be as hot. With that the set is done, let the set break festivities begin!

At almost every show this was the Philzone meeting time at the tapers section with the Reddy Kilowatt being the beacon in the sea of tye-dyed hippies. Folks we are a pretty boring group as I see it and that’s just the way I like it. One important note: For Zoners it’s like 8 out of 10 who smoke, you NON-Smokers are way in the minority so put a lid on it!

Set 2: Sun Jam opener (I’m still not sure if it happened here or if it was at the opener), these structured jams are the big part of the special shows and by keeping an eye on stage was the key to knowing when they were in one & at this show I didn’t pay attention. They would read and play from the sheet music for each of these jams. So if it was the sun jam, it was short and had a big Celebration jam (missing from setlist) attached to it which then flowed nicely into Lay of the Sunflower. What a hauntingly beautiful song this is, perfect for the PLQ. After a short break we were bathed in yet another beauty..Unbroken Chain. I do believe this is THE tune for Phil with Broken being the only thing close. On this evening he lays this tune on us with as much tenderness as he can muster and the crowd could feel it and responded in kind, SO NICE! From there it’s time to liven up the place with a Rocker, Sunshine of your Love tore the place apart! Those heavy Cream riffs really shake up a venue with Warren pounding them out. So after another trippy little seguway we are brought back to a more mellow state with Lady with a Fan. Phil again treats us to a MUCH improved vocal. After some sweet noodling and teases from Jimmy, we are bathed in deep blues and stars from Candice, and then from the band comes the always touching Stella Blue. I was surprised when they went from instrumental to vox on this last fall but man this was the right choice. Warren really has this tune down pat, and what a pleasure it is to hear this tune now. We sail out of Stella on one of the better transitions of the night into the Inspiration! WOW, what a trip! This thing kicks some serious butt and the crowd loves to join in BIG every time. Since this part of Terrapin is SO damn big it’s only natural that the Monster Rocker Golden Road would follow next. Bombs going off Warren & Jimmy tearing it up and all the while the invisible man in the back is cranking it out, Oh Man what a Cacophony of Joy!
The Lovelight Encore was a nice nightcap for a rather mellow a spacey night at the Tweetah. I have said that these guys’s lacked a softer and gentler side. Tonight during the second set I was gladly proven wrong what a beautiful show! The depth of this band is really starting to reach what used to be with the GD, no longer can people spew about this being heavy metal Dead music anymore. Pick up a copy of this show and find out for yourself!

The After Party- Back in the lot I made my way to the Crypmoblie for some fine Grillin’ & Swillin’. We tried to party hard but were foiled by the local Constables. Oh well that would be more than made up for on the road with these guys…….
