It's a George Harrison cover. A bit poppy, but very Beatle-ish. Furthur does it justice.

Hey everyone.
Hope you are all doing fine this New New Years Eve. Just got back from the Little Feat show at the Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown, NJ. Classic Feat start to finish with a Scarlet Begonias Jam in the middle of the Fat Man->(can't remember)->Get up Stand up->Scarlet Jam->Fat Man, 2nd song/jamof the night. But I didn't sign in to give a review of the Little Feat show but it was killer.(FYI any Dead/Phil/Furthur/Feat fans sirius and the net will be broadcating live from the Keswick in Lansdale, PA @ around 9:30 eastern tonight 12/31, check out the Feat site for details). I really wanted to wish everyone a Healthy and Happy New Year! And to thank taperrob for his tireless efforts to share streams, info, etc., with the our community my hat is off to you taperrob, thanks again for everything you have contributed to us. I would also like to say that after some 35 years of following this band of good time pirates through good and not so good times I would not have traded this journey for anything and have no regrets and just want to go FURTHUR. Last point for the year all the anxious folks out there me being one,try to chill a bit if it's meant to be there will be a stream, peeps are are trying to get us the updates but let them have some fun, it just seems like Furthur mania is getting a bit out of hand(peeps ready to anything to get Nokia tix(I'm was just as guilty on that one)but it made take a step back and be thankful for the ALL the shows I've seen and not get to hung up on it all it all works out if you just go with the flow IMO.
PEACE

Encore:
Attics Of My Life
proving once again, they know what I want better than I do
David Nelson Band does a great Give Me Love, with Mookie singing..............LOOKS KILLER!
Last hour caught fire from St. through encore. Alot of fun with greatest audience a band could ever have! God bless the Grateful Dead, and of course Happy New Year!
whew! glad they got that out of their system. hopefully, something better can be arranged for tomorrow's three sets.
it was very packed in there. I think they were expecting people to hang out in the very large bars, where they have speakers set up. very few people spent any time there tonight, but perhaps on New Year's Eve the lushes will come out.
Dance/7 Hills/Any Road really put a damper on the middle of the show, and after ending up with two nearly-acapella songs, I was wishing I had coughed up the bucks for a seat.
The Eleven and GDTRFB, as good as they were, did not salvage the show.
Felt this show was very slow. It wasn't so much that the band was warming-up, but each song was very measured. The band was really in some tight grooves, and most of the segues were really good ones, obviously well-rehersed. And that was sort of how most of the set sounded, even the jams, very well-rehersed, without quite as much near-edge-of-control jamming. In fact, somebody needs to tell Joe Russo to wake the fuck up because it's NYE tomorrow, and we'd really like to rock out the old and roll in the new. Then again, I think the somnabulistic drumming may have been part of the plan.
My $.02
YMMV
Damm first set starts with shakedown and ends with lovelight with a estimated and cold rain thrown in. They must not be on at all if people thought it was slow .if this was 2001 that list would have killed
your 2 cents is rusted and retarted
i could not have been more inpressed espesialy with joe
joe russo is a fucking amazing drummer
you cant drum like that
john mollo can
billy cany micky cant
hes a fucking champ and a real cool guy, he was killing it last night
wasent the best show iv seen by any means, but it rocked, damn straight. that first hakedown>estimated was ridiculously hot
not a slow show
there where like 3 new songs, so im sure that contributed to people kinda losing intrest
Dance/7 Hills/Any Road a damper??? just bc you don't know them. 7 Hills is awesome and Any Road is a great cover!!! stop your whining & give someone else your tickets Clifton Hanger. Notapillow knows what's going on. Tonight is going to blow minds. New cover to start the 3rd set
this show was Phenominal, I have never heard welcome to the dance as peppped up and I completelt disagree that it put a damper in fact WTTD and 7 hills hade HUGE moments I mean peaking soaring notes from John while the band was nose diving like and eagle and barelling down like a freight train, it was sooo tasty. Honestly the scarlet>fire was probably the low point for me, thats how good everything else was, the Playing went wayyyyy out there finally came back, everyone called the shakedown opener, the cranked it up in the middle....shake it down shake it shake it down now, and the attics was just mind blowing really really tasty stuff from the back up singers all night.....I would rate this as good as any of the RR, Eugene, Nateva or NYE shows from last night....it ws fucking gooooood. Have a listen, Jeff was awesome all night as was Russo I love it when the step it up. Tonight is gonna be a barn burner!@
I think opinions on the show can be warped by any particular reviewer's position within the BCGG Hall. It's easier to find faults from a distance and it's easy to be biased towards the positive when you're up front.
I'll let my up front bias out here now...
I was 25 ft in front of Phil. I didn't hear or see any slow drumming - cept for the intended depressed dirge of DDHNMercy. I thought Joe was killin' it.
IMHO, I thought the whole event was musically strong with 3 small exeptions:
JK's approach to Shakedown lacked the filigreed delicacy of Garcia's. Jerry used to fill this tune up with funky, hooky, licks between the lyrics and JK kept this thing dialed back till he got his opportunity to solo.
Cold Rain and Snow was solid but the hook lick was under played.
Bobby mailed in the lyrics to 7 Hill of Gold- reading from the teleprompter and was buried by the band most of the way through that thing. The jam was good though - as were the jams at the tail ends of the other new, less familiar songs of both sets.
Otherwise for me it was all solid - classic GD music. The first set felt like a 2nd set and the 2nd set was all gravy + the Encore was SWEET!
Lookin' forward to tonight!
Happy New Year Y'all!
>>New cover to start the 3rd set
That will most likely ring in the New Year...Just sayin'.
I'm still wrapping my head around the first set: Shakedown to start the show is always welcome to me and this one did not disappoint. Estimated was fun and they really started to go wayyyy out (in the second song - some folks seemed to get lost, but this is what I live for), there was a sense of mystery - what's coming up (someone was thinking IKYR, but not even close) - Crazy Fingers was fine, then a return to Welcome to the Dance, which was completely different than I remember it - the band had that look that they were going into unfamilier territory, then John and Jeff start going off on each other, higher and higher (call it cheese factor or bombastic drama). Old head remembering Cold Rain and Snows from Kaiser daze, gets his wish. Tennessee Jed was a fan favorite and it ripped, even with Bobby passing some assigned vocal duties to JK. Seven Hills seemed to bring more new experiences, which slowed some of the crowd down, who wanted the familiar. Lovelight seemed to have a tentative start, then finished strongly with the crowd going crazy.
Seems that they started the first set playing continuously for at least an hour and were truly out there much of the time. Not like I remember from Grateful Dead until Cold Rain and Tennessee - and I liked it. Want to hear that again.
The kids are jumping all over me right now, so maybe more later...
Ya know, I think they should have saved 'The Eleven' for New Year's.
Ok so here is my little review of last nights show. Coffee in hand and cobwebs swept as far away as they are going to get this weekend. First set opened strong and rockin' with a funky Shakedown and was followed by a great Estimated. For me it was a special moment because I just moved back to California. Crazy Fingers was solid but just ok. I think I've been a little spoiled with the amazing setlists that Furthur has produced in their short tenure. You get a show that has a couple of new shows and it is easy to allow your energy to get sucked away for a while. First set had that feeling at times. I will say that Jeff, John and Joe played with great intensity during Welcome to the Dance and Seven Hills but the band never found the groove on either of them. First set ended as strong as it started with a kick ass Lovelight. Maybe a little clunky in parts but Bobby had all his silly mojo working on this one. Jammy, fun and a perfect way to end the set. Wish the band had ended the setbreak a little quicker, 55 minutes was very long but did open up a little room as some folks called it a night. Silly Deadheads because the band delivered in the 2nd set. I loved the Any Road opener and it was played very well with tons of energy and I think it will work well in the future with some of Phil's themed setlists. At this point we blast off and the rest of the 2nd set is a sing a long dance party. Each song jammed well and building into weird little spaces. St. Stephens and Death Don't are the highlights for me. Joe knocked the St. out of the park and for me that is hard to say since I am firmly planted in Camp Molo. Kudos to the whole band for the 2nd set chemistry and a huge thank you to Sunshine and Jeff. They give this bands vocal sound that little something something. Watching Jeff scream his part during St. was so much fun and I truly dig that dudes vibe. All in all I would have to say it was a great Bob driven show but the true gem will be NYE. I won't be at that show as I was a one and done this round but will give it a listen on the XM as I drive down to see family on the Central Coast. Love being part of this community and wish all Deadhead everywhere a wonderful and dance filled New Year.
reading this I get the feeling everyone was at different shows. lololol
I was suppose to be in San Fran for the circus For the 30th and NYE but Jet Blue cancelled my flight and fucked up my New years !!! So I hope everyone has as much fun as I was planning on haveing !! Peace and love Happy New Years everyone ....

my view of 12/31/2010
thanks for the updates setlists and reviews !
have a great new years zoners !!
Mchammr - I musta been 3 feet from ya on the floor... Thanks!
You know, chris (phil20)summed it up nicely. Good parts of set one, and energy drained out of the crowd a couple of times. Overly long set break but set 2 was nuts. St Stephen was wicked good, esp coming out of a strong, strong china cat. i love the fact that these guys are breaking old chains. Maybe china-the eleven in their future?
What i saw and heard last nite was a band that has grown tighter and more comfortable in their skin. Phil only sang one lead (thanks, Phil) and JK did a great job. JK and Jeff have bonded, it seems to me. The interplay between lead and keyboard was so integral to the GD, and it is to Furthur. Great stuff. And the bid you goodnight was soooo sweet. Harmonies were dead on and echoed in attics. a great show.
im with phlip...people get discouraged or bored because they dont know the newer tunes...energy level drops, and the music will suffer..the show looks like it was interesting, i'm looking forward to the recording...and looking forward to streaming tongiht thanks to sirius radio!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKMbK6J8Bp0
The band pays its respects to being home and the recent local weather: Shakedown (San Rafael) Estimated (obvious) Crazy Fingers (' your rain falls like crazy fingers', 'cloud hands reaching from a rainbow) and Cold Rain and Snow. Nothing spectacular, but solid, and they took it out strong with the Love Light finisher. Not having heard Seven Hills before, I would have liked Bob's vocal up more in the mix to hear the lyrics. As for Set 2 - really appreciated the extended jams in Playin, China and especially St. Stephen. You are quibbling if you think that 'edge of control' can be summoned - nobody else goes places that these guys can go, and these were fabulouos sections. If you've been doing this long enough you know that, on occasion, the performance magically opens up places deep in your being and can genuinely inform your life. You may have noticed the memorial our crwod set up in front of the sound board to our friend who passed this week, and who had a ticket to this show. While I know that DDHNM, We Bid You Goodnight and Attics aren't going to satisfy your dancing jones, for our crowd these selections were transcendent and very cathartic. How often can a musical performance bring tears? Incredible.. And any time you have 15000 deadheads singing Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad....its ALL good.
Killer show last night. The band is definitely putting their own stamp on these jams as they evolve with their own character. Shakedown was good with some funky twists in the jam, Estimated very well done and Bobby sounding like he's meeting his full potential vocally. Crazy Fingers was a highlight, just because it's one of my favorite songs and, with John, was executed with more justice than i've heard since, well, Jerry died. Really liked Welcome to the Dance, which i never thought i'd say after hearing the early Furthur shows, but the backup singers added way more power to this song. Thought it was "Colors of the Rain" at first, but this song is MUCH better. Cold Rain and Snow was excellent, again thanks to the backup singers, plus the 7,000 backup singers in the audience. Tennessee Jed was interesting. John sung it with like a giddy kid; he seemed to love it. He and Weir were doing the verse trade and Bobby totally flubbed his opening (2nd) verse, so John took the rest of the verse over -- good recovery. Bobby came back in the 4th verse. But don't get me wrong, aside from that initial flub, this version smoked! I am a little biased though coming from Tennessee, but if you like this song it was most excellent. 7 Hills of Gold was a first for me, and i thought it was a great song. I kept wondering about the meaning of the lyrics, realizing that there were 7 people on stage, and at times 7 people in the GD. Maybe it has something to do with the "heart of gold band" and each members respective "light." I'm probably totally off there, lol. Anyhow, it was very well executed musically, couldn't really understand the words though. Lovelight was super fun!
2nd set started strong. I really loved the last George Harrison album when it came out in 2001, so it is SO NICE to hear them playing it in this band. Great lyrics, especially for the new year -- "if you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there." Very taoist The Playin' was the best version i've heard from this band. Very colorful and psychedelic. I noticed on fall tour (des moines?) they played an almost 20 minute version, and this version followed suite in its exploratory sentiment. Killer, full version, reprise and all. The China Cat was well executed, the high energy transition into IKYR and all, except when it fell into the 2 beat which would be the beginning of IKYR, it took another turn for a couple minutes, and eventually fizzled into silence. This would have been weird, until the opening notes of St. Stephen began. I believe John played the late 60's opening, which i prefer, rather than the 77 opening. This version was thoroughly explored, another beautiful psychedelic foray, millennium jam and all wonderfully executed, until Phil - yes Phil - dropped the return bomb too early. It's very rare to hear Phil mess up like that. Who knows, he was probably the only one on time, but the rest of the band was clearly not ready to go back into the St. Stephen theme, and nobody else flinched. So wouldn't call it a total train wreck. Phil recovered and the band, in sync, kept it going a few more measures until Russo gave the signal. Still a killer version, and worth a listen. The Scarlett/Fire was your typical great version...i rarely hear a bad version of these two. Death was most excellent, with Bobby screaming with passion and the backup singers giving this song the feeling of a New Orleans funeral dirge. Awesome stuff! I always love the Eleven, although I'm always wondering about the intro, where the band is playing in 6 time and then enters into 11...but John stays in 6 for a couple extra measures. At first i thought he was messing up, but he does it every time, so i guess it's on purpose? Anyhow, i like how the backup singers are filling in some of the verses that Bobby used to sing himself. Another great version, and the outro is one of my favorite musical themes in Grateful Dead history... half the band in six, half in 5. That's pure bliss for me, as my heart beats in 11 time. After that, there was another great crazy dissonant jam, that was getting pretty wild until Phil sort of rammed the opening theme to GDTRFB. Again i don't think the band was ready for the transition, kind of forced. Phil seemed a little anxious, but it was probably a curfew thing. Great solid version with JK dazzling my brain with great guitar runs. The final 2 songs -- We Bid You Goodnight and Attics -- were pure church. Consider my soul thoroughly moved.
As an afterthought, i'd just like to say this band's maturity can be seen by how they handled their mistakes. From JK filling in for Bobby's mental voids in TN Jed, to the St. Stephen flub, this band did a good job RECOVERING -- even glossing over -- some minor mistakes rather than letting it all fall apart. Overall it was very tight, and one of the best FLOWING setlists i've heard from this band. Kudos to Jill for that, and kudos to San Francisco for the great vibe! See y'all tonight!
^^^upthecanyon (Rlappi): Your review is spot-on, details and all.
It's all coming back to me...
I thought both sets were great...LOVED the Shakedown/Estimated/Crazy Fingers intro and Cold Rain and Snow is one of my favorites. The whole night had great jams...very psychedelic...like they do in SF. I always like him, but I was more impressed with JK last night...he was on all night. The ending with mellow songs was really beautiful...I liked the way they did Attics last night...with minimal instruments instead of pure acapella. I did not feel a loss of crowd energy during the newer songs...but it was a very stoned crowd and sometimes they quiet down just to listen...the band knows when they are hitting it and don't need a screaming crowd on every song. Sometimes the music is so amazing you just want to listen...
San Francisco got a great treat last night! I expect tonight will be killer!
"Seven Hils of Gold"...Seven Hills of San Francisco....California Gold Rush...just a thought.....
Always interesting to read my fellow-Zoners take. I really enjoyed the show. The Estimated had a nice timing groove to it, a little reggae at first, a little jazzy later. Nice Crazy Fingers. I agree with Cornjulio, there are moments that I long for the greater rush of enthusiastic response from the audience. I expected it during some of JK's great vocals on Cold Rain & Snow and it barely generated a buzz.
First time seeing the cover of George Harrison cover of Any Road and you could just hear how perfect that song is for this band. I loved the Playing In The Band and thought the vocals from Jeff & Sunshine throughout the night were spot on. This is a "band," and I continue to enjoy Chimenti's colorful adds and think I keep hearing McCoy Tyner runs all night. Loved the way they teased the Rider during the post China Cat jam then dropped us into the Stephen. Nicely done.
The vocals on And We Bid You Goodnight and Attics were sweet. Remember kids, Jesus loves you the best.
Happy New Year!
I had fun and am not complaining. It was my first Furthur show of the year!
Peace
I loved the show and if you didn't you must be an asshole!
Phlip (Philnc87): New set to start the 3rd set...
Me: That will most likely ring in the New Year...Just sayin'.
OK, I eat my words: they started off the (10 minutes early) New Year (and 3rd set) with "We Love You."
Phlip (Philnc87)- Insider? Psychic? Or just a brash, but lucky guess? You decide!
killer shows, everything was well played
stay tuned. ( few hours till Lift Off )

Sugar Mags>Time to open the second set, SSDD to close it.
http://community.deadvids.com/
For me the 1st set started hard as Weir's guitar was BLAZING loud where I was, but as I moved around the sound was much better. Cold Rain & Snow was just fine and JK & Phil were grooving through the 1st set.
2nd set was a psychedelic mind-melt; just another great, fun night in San Francisco with 8,500 freaks all dancing and twisting, the music twisting and dancing us all.
2nd set was a real trip.
Just a little rock 'n roll. That's all we ask.
BTW, very nice to see Louie Fuckin' Lardo, Garyfish, MarkD, Sinatra, Rob Scalione, Catchabigone, Emily, and a few others in that big ol' rockin' crowd.
Also saw that crazy John Barlow again, dancing like a damn fiend in the balcony concourse, along with a few thousand others of us.
Damn crazy spinners. Does EVERYONE have to dance?
Damn good time at the Civic tonight.
Awesome night

that sucks, Mike.
second set was incredible. Nice light show too.
I was 5 feet from Barlow for 2 or 3 songs during the first set, and he was conversing, with his back to the band, essentially the entire time. in fact, most of the floor was rampant with talkers, and with people who were there for a party to which the music was secondary. I expected that on NY's Eve, but didn't think it would be as bad tonight.
I also found the show rather slow, with the three "new" songs and two acapella closers. I'm expecting much more bang for my buck on 12/31.
a fun warmup show. not one for the archives.
Saint Stephen!
Whats up with all of the "talkers" on this recent tour? I experienced many talkers in St. Louis and it seems every show I read about someone mentions it also...whats the dealio with the seemingly lack of interest with these fools?
Phil called and said tonight they will debut this:
Phil vox on Santa Baby. I mean, who else??!
savin' it up for friday night
"2nd set was a psychedelic mind-melt"
I want some of what what he was on
I do say Set 2 looks good
My only NYE..2005..seems like a long time ago..
Fritz had died a month earlier and Tulip Fairy Natalie..who I shared a Hotel room with..a month later
Heres to 2011 may it be a good one for you all
>>Santa Baby > Born Cross Eyed > Santa Baby > Bob Star
lmao
People talk more when the music is not sufficiently engaging. When it's really cooking, you shut your mouth and shake your ass.
Wow..GDad, was that five years ago? I was down from Alaska that show...still looking for an extra (face+) for tonite.....510-224-1131
Not slow at all - tempos were quite brisk, except for thetunes that are supposed to be slow. Had a great time, but didn't meet a single Zoner. Maybe tonight? I plan to be in the same area tonight - just above the balcony walkway in the left corner. Come by and say high!
The show had it's good points, but there was the all to common problem of flaccid John. He just did not deliver the 'pow!' when it was needed. This was most notable during St Stephen, where the rest of the band was cooking, but he went limp when it was his turn to slam dunk the muthafuckah.
"Mamma said get some blood to that penis... don't be dangling around, no flaccid John."
Highlights were crazy fingers, scarlet>fire, death don't, GDTRFB, and attics.
i'd like to comment on the "talking" issue many of us have been forced to deal with...lots of times its the people who cannot handle their drugs--they get all jacked up on ecstasy and LSD and never shut up--the other part of this is to accept the fact that 1 in 10,000 come for the show people...some people prefer to become the show, which is unfortunate
Maybe, John wasn't in the right heartspace last night.
Set 2 was smokin. Death Don't > 11 was the real highlight for me, but really the whole set was raging after they got the obligatory clunker out of the way.
Couldn't tell from where I was, but was Bobby playing a Strat with Tele headstock? That's what it looked like to me.
Barlow and his crew were on the balcony next to us the whole second set. I asked him for some good reading; he recommends Tao Te Ching.
SWEET POSTER!!
>>>>Maybe, John wasn't in the right heartspace last night.
No, I do not think that was it. He seems like a real nice guy, and I know someone who knows him pretty well, and they have confirmed my suspicions of him being a very nice guy.
>>>>>Death Don't > 11 was the real highlight for me
Hmm.... seemed like John was completely lost during the 11. It was such a train wreck that the band basically cut it short.
There were no obligatory clunkers with Phil and friends just sayin
>>>>There were no obligatory clunkers with Phil and friends just sayin
which lineup?
>>>>There were no obligatory clunkers with Phil and friends just sayin
Have you listened to There And Back Again ?
Fun night, some of the jams were really great, and the harmonies were excellent - thanks to Jeff and Sunshine. Go Team Furthur.
I will say it's not my favorite Phil and Friends line up, I miss the more original sound that Phil brought with his previous incarnations, this reminds me a bit of DSO, not that there's anything wrong with that, I suppose.
1st set:
liked the cold rain & snow/tenn jed even though JK flubbed the words, good crowd energy
2nd set
Parts of the Playin jam, Death dont and GDTRFB-
some real A-hole chirpers on the floor
3 out of 5 stars
NYE should be better
how do I stream it, not attending
I agree, that Playin was surprisingly hot, thought I heard hints of Stranger, maybe tonight? There were definitely a few sparks flying last night. And Bobby did good on Death, for sure.
And after the show, I did not hear ONE frickin nitrous tank.
Oh, how the little things make it nice.
>this reminds me a bit of DSO
with or without jugglers?

>with or without jugglers?
With jugglers and glow toys. IT'S the Circus. Furthur is recreating the GD and allowing the fans to be part of the experience. Furthur also can boast a better Drummer, much better Bass Player, and even a better Bobby! And the back up singers can harmonize better than DSO's fake Donna. I'd prefer my Furthur with More SLESS though.
Decent show. Playin' jam was hot. Crazy Fingers was great to hear, though they definitely could have gone Furthur in the end.
Great to see so many folks, and glad I made it out from NY.
Memo to sound team...when everyone on the floor is talking and not listening, you may want to raise the volume a few decibels. It could definitely have been louder last night.
I would expect a stronger more consistent showing tonight.
Damn Westies...bring some energy. A couple of musical moments that would have brought the house down back east barely brought applause. Very little for the band to feed off of, and unlike the Dead, not too many Easties making the trip.
Let's make some noise out there!
thanks for all the reviews and setlist updates zoners , have a great one tonight !!
heres a few pics from a fun night in San Francisco...
>>>liked the cold rain & snow/tenn jed even though JK flubbed the words, good crowd energy
That was one Bobby Weir who 'flubbed' the words to Jed...he was supposed to sing the second verse and blanked, shook his head in playful disgust and looked to John to bail him out.
You must have been very far away from the action or on some real good drugs not to notice that.
I thought the Shakedown was easily the highlight of the night with some really beautiful and unique jams in there.
Overall, the show was about a 2 or 3 out of 10...it never even came close to going off...to working...they tried in the GDTRFB but it was too little too late by that point. Too bad they don't seem to want to let John be John...or maybe it was just an off night.
I'm very much hoping tonight is MUCH better.
Bobby was firing off steely shards of electric guitar brilliance throughout the second set. a few missteps here and there, but I thought the show was very solid and had some truly great moments. Phil was super stoked with how far Playin went and how effortlessly they flowed back in to the Playin theme. It seems like when they rely on verbal cues in the mikes more than visual cues the flow isn't as good. The first set seemed this way even though i felt it was well played, but the second set had great flow.
Guess you made it up to your usual spot on the rail, huh Canyon? Nice!
Looking forward to sending off 2010 tonight!
Russo is a monster. And I'm not normally one to sing Bobby's praises, but he killed Death last night. First set was ackward, and floundering, but that second set was amazing start to finish. GDTRFB into Bid You Goodnight then an inspired attics. That was truely special. Those back up singers are spot on.
And a big thanks to Louie Fuck'n Lardo for grabbing those awesome seats. Wasn't able to get up and down the stairs as much as I wanted, and didn't catch a lotta folks, but enjoyed the ones I did meet up with.
All in all a phine night.
My pleasure ntfdaway. It was great hanging with u and then garyfish for second set. My energy level was low and I struggled a bit at times. All in all fun time. Hope to see more folks tonight.
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYY YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!
Rob Scalione, you're a good man, I was happy to see you last night. Hope for many more opportunities to hang & party next year. Have a GREAT New Years Eve!!!
And here’s another point of view on the crowd energy question; as a born-and-bred westie I don't think there was anything wrong with the "energy" last night, and I don't automatically equate a lack of constant chimpanzee-like screaming or singing loud & lustily at every moment with "low energy".
I think that constant roaring "energy" is great in general for rock & roll; it brings explosive excitement and can make a good show great, but IMO it can also have an effect on an improvisational band that IMO isn’t the best…it easily can push the band outside their own head and into more "please the crowd" moments.
That type of crowd frenzy is like a drug, and I think it's hard for any musician not to be influenced into, "Oh listen to that ROAR! YEAH BABY! I'll throw in THIS lick and that will REALLY get 'em going!!!"
I don't want the band to be playing directly for a crowd response, I want them searching for & playing the music that’s in their ear & heads, and l do my best to follow their lead. I think sometimes a constant Metallicaesque frenzy can shallow the band into more of a crowd-pleasing place instead of a seeking place, which is fine, but isn't what I'm looking for personally in this type of music. I love the quit, drippy moments where the band is floating, not being pushed or rushed back to "the rock".
Just my opinion, and not a complete one, as there are times when that manic rock crowd frenzy and ripping up-front driving music is exactly what I’m looking for, but as usual I lean back to my mantra…
"Don't give 'em what they want, give 'em what they SHOULD want."
Words to live by.
Oh, and as for endless talkers, I don't know if it's just a "westie" thing or not (I really doubt that) but whatever; they can all STUFF A DAMN SOCK IN IT!!!
And that includes me, as we're ALL susceptible to that dreaded lapse of manners sometimes.
Please for the love of God, SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!!!!!
Glad to see you too buddy... Thanks for hanging in my neighborhood for a song. Happy New Year!

Oh yeah, I ate that one too.
Our teen joined us at the show, but said he enjoyed the Jackie Greene's B-day Fillmore show (set with Phil) more.
"..and who was THAT drummer?" he asked.
Not that Russo isn't good, but Molo caught his attention and he wanted to hear more. Apple doesn't fall far from the tree..
The Caution>Rat last night was fantastic. A great sign of things to come. I have a feeling this will be the last NYE show from this band and they played a really good.
I wish they had done a Weather Report Prelude and Part One but other than that small regret they put on a great New Years show, at least in my book.
I think it's the only GD type show, of the hundreds and hundreds I've been to, that I drank way too much. I had a friend at the bar and I guess I was thinking that free drinks wouldn't effect me like paid drinks. Glad my wife was there to drive me home!
^^oops...wrong thread...

Thanks for sharing.
What a great treat for me on a day of just working around the living room and kitchen! I've been waiting for a copy of this show to pop up, nothing on the archive yet. Definately mellow compared to 12/31 and alot of the other Furthur shows but really well played. 7 Hills, Crazy Fingers..Great! Tennessee Jed is perfection! The jam after all the verses are done ROCKS! Thanks for the tip! I'll watch the 2nd set with the wife 2nite all cozy!
