Indeed
yeh, a free year to somebody who's not even a customer.. dream on. it's only when paying customers drop the entire XM / Sirius service over the screw-ups of one channel on one night - and amount tens of thousands of lost revenue (not $12) that somebody will notice. good luck with that...
bummer
Poopy indeed.
Phil loves Cumberland.

Satisfaction is way over due since Furthur started dominating the phuniverse...

Come on it's supposed to FFFUUUNNN regardless, roll with it, go with the flow pick up an instrument or even have a pots and pans jam, try not to get to negative or caught up it's not worth it in my humble opinion HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Good call Help I remember USA TV Network UP ALL NITE broadcast the bulk of the show commercial free, Ken's Countdown is really worth listening to. Extemporaneously counting down in what seemed like a very altered state of consiousness he even threw Father Guido Sarducci co-host for a loop if you haven't checked it out it's right up there with the Marx Bros.

MojoHand > Nice pics - Thanks & Happy New Year!
I was at the show and it was a great first and second set.
However, I did not get the countdown to New Years coming 10 minutes early?
Also, the 3rd set was a great list of songs that they have played a lot lately. One of the things that has made Furthur very interesting has been the digging deep into the GD family songbook. I guess I should not complain, but it just seemed too canned to me. The new cover tune at "Midnight", well, I didnt get that.
Even though, had a great time and Happy New Year to all.
GOOD TIMES AT BGCC!!!
My only quibbles were with whatever that tune was after the 11:50 PM "spectacle," that seemed to suck the energy out of the room till Sugar Magnolia hit - and that (IMHO) ridiculously lame version of High on a Mountain. If you ever heard the source of that tune you'd know what I mean.
Otherwise the band was cranking hard throughout!
Here's hoping your 2011's Go up to 11!
Grateful Ted
SF, CA
They played "We Love You."
Was that a Rolling Stones song, like from the album with Rainbow and 2000 Light Years from Home?
Skud - thanks for clearing up that mystery:
From Wikipedia:
"We Love You" is a rock song written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, first released as a single in the United Kingdom by The Rolling Stones on 18 August 1967, with "Dandelion" as the B-side. It reached the top ten in Britain, peaking at #8, but only made it to #50 in the United States, where "Dandelion" (which reached #14) was promoted as the A-side. The song features backing vocals by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
Recorded on 12 June, during the sessions for Their Satanic Majesties Request, the song is a droning Moroccan influenced anthem of defiance. Outwardly, it was a message from the band to its fans, expressing appreciation for support in the wake of their recent drug busts. It was also an ironic, tongue in cheek slap in the faces of the police harassing them and the Stones' true feelings about it, putting on a cooperative and friendly face while inside they were seething with anger and indignation (as is represented by Brian Jones' unforgettably surreal[citation needed] Mellotron in the background). "We Love You" is a psychedelic collage of jail sounds, Nicky Hopkins' foreboding piano riff, and otherworldly tape-delayed vocal effects, featuring a visiting Lennon and McCartney on high harmonies.
Allen Ginsberg was in London for a pro-marijuana rally in Hyde Park. He met Jagger at McCartney's house, and Jagger invited the Beat poet to that night's session with Paul and John to record uncredited backing vocals for "We Love You". Ginsberg, waving his Shiva beads and a Tibetan oracle ring, conducted the singers from the other side of the studio glass to the tempo of the stuttering Mellotron track. "They looked like little angels," he wrote later of the Stones and the Beatles, "like Botticelli Graces singing together for the first time."
Mick Jagger – lead vocals, backing vocals
Keith Richards – electric guitars, backing vocals
Brian Jones – Mellotron
Bill Wyman – bass
Charlie Watts – drums, percussion
Nicky Hopkins – piano
John Lennon – backing vocals
Paul McCartney – backing vocals

"However, I did not get the countdown to New Years coming 10 minutes early?"
maybe the clocks were running late
Painted Mandolin --- Thanks for clearing that up , I was thinking it might be the Stones version
Really a rather obscure song .
Back in the 80's I had a Bootleg Stones cassette and that was one of the songs on it.
"maybe the clocks were running late"
That can't be. The clock to the right of Phil was 11:50 PM.
I have no idea why they did it so early. So weird.
Weirdest show for sure

"That can't be. The clock to the right of Phil was 11:50 PM.
I have no idea why they did it so early. So weird."
The only explanation is that it must have been getting early :-)
Wow. Had a great time the other night. The only complaint were all the repeats from last year (11- count 'em!)- the opening notes of Truckin' let the air out of the room. Could have been a much heavier third set, but oh well. Hope everybody had a safe happy time.

Send it to Bad Canyon, so he can make a DVD of the entire shoe...
maybe they did things early so that Sugar Magnolia would still be played at Midnight??
how do i get it to bad canyon? i have a cold rain and snow , china cat, shakedown , parade and sugar magnolia full as well.
china cat video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gi0YnOecuuE
Hey Socaldead:
I was half-joking about Canyon. He's making a DVD of the entire Terrapin Station set from Furthur Fest, though he may be interested in the future?
Maybe you can break down the video into parts that fit youtube's limits, though it must be frustrating not to have it all in one piece. Thanks for sharing your vids!
Ok, I think this show musically was a very good show even though several songs were songs that they played last year and that is fine cause who doesnt like sugar magnolia or caution. But I have to discuss the scene itself. I have been seeing dead related stuff for like 15 years. I am no stranger to both the good side and bad side of dead type shows. But what I saw this new years kinda put a damper on my impression of what is going on with the scene. About half way through the third set a man started punching in all directions and hit several people really hard in there faces as he walked from the floor to the doors. One happened to be right next to me. I got lucky and felt this weird energy coming at me and moved quickly but the lady next to me was not so lucky and i think she was okay overall, but her and her friend left the show, and it was definetly end of the night for her and I doubt she will ever go to a furthur show again. Not exactly a great way to start the new year. She took a crusty fist right to her face as did a few others. After this man had hit several people and made his way towards the exit, I figured security would have seen this lunatic and dealt with him. But about five minutes later he came back to the floor and started attacking people again. I saw one girl get pushed full force into a trash can face first. At this point I was like "I am getting out of here" and i moved towards the stage cause it was just too scary and crazy for me. Luckily people at these shows are, in general, really cool and were helping out with the injured and getting them medical help. I think this is the first time in my life I wished that there had been a little more security at the show. Like I said before, the show was awesome even though i saw some nasty violence. I just think that the crowd for furthur in california is attracting some real negative vibes or maybe its vice versa. Will I go to furthur again in the future, for sure! In california, probably not.
Amidst the floor at countdown, my vid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jIF4hbj5EI
what was the guys problem?
why did'nt several people just grab the asshole and throw him out ?
Heya Drake...you can cut up each song and upload them individually (long as it's 10 minutes each) then you can create a "playlist" on youtube that will enable the viewer to roll through all the songs in order with just one click.
That's what I would do anyway.
any program recomended to cut pieces in half ?

I'm heading over to the venue in a few minutes and I'm bringing my hat-down West Coast Energy in full force tonight.
My first NYE with this bunch was 32 years ago. That night changed my life and since then I've been to more of these parties than I can think of.
What a great ride it's been and how fucking great to able to do it one more time with Phil & Bob and all of you freaks, in a room I've been rocking in for 31 years and have seen multiple NYE shows.
That Wheel keeps turning. I've made it through once more and I'm hanging on for dear life!

I don't know, but I know I did a better college show than this. Hell, even my adult contemporary dj gig sounded better and that was me wanting to kill myself most of the time since I had a playlist that often had Celine Dion 3 times an hour.

why does he keep saying they will decide very soon whether to pack it in for the night. they have hours to figure out how to fix this. they should try hard and consult experts.
What is an ISM line? or whatever acronym he said.
Was this whole broadcast reliant on a cell-phone connection? Or are landlines involved?
Sure this is a buzzkill, but it's funny that there's thousands of us all experiencing it together.
God bless the Group-Mind.
For good or for ill.

So Bobby pushed Matt Kelly out of Ratdog because Bobby found out that Matt "Uno" Kelly was a Fed? Outrageous.

hello friends .....does anyone have a user/password for sirius I can tap in to? Pleas ehelp!!
Nice looking set in SF
What year is this Miracle>Terrapin on Sirius?
On Sirius is 12-31-78
I'm down for bed now. That's all too much for one NYE. Ominous omen on the future of 2011? This is the season of what now?
it's not working Neb.
so the deadvids, now has a video, is still same as sirius?
or did they get busted?

this stream sounds good 2 me.
Happy New Year Zoners!!
I think they got busted or reported...
I have always had trouble getting that feed
Oh, yes. I have this on DVD. This source is very, very nice.
they do play some good quality aud recordings on Sirius. Maybe I'll extend my membership.
Deadvids did not get "busted" what happened is that sirius/xm dropped the ball (well really it's who they were working with) and they all feel really bad. So I'd just blame W. Bush! if it were me.
zoners make me laugh lots!

must end set with GR as they opened with it at the beginning of the year
right?
For using XM feed with the vid? Not thinking that was too legal.
I think what is happening is that there is an communication infrastructure issue in BGCC that is the problem (router, etc..) which is owned by ATT
this is reason for no streams
Yes, I agree TU .. Hugs

I think so
Silly children.
The music lives...
1st set Caution into Wharf Rat stunning.
2nd set was absolutely amazing, as good as I've seen from them from I know You Rider on. Damn, DAMN good; tears coming down my face!
3rd set was candy & cake after the meat, and ripping all the way.
It was ALL damn good rock 'n roll; those that must critique this band go ahead, but great good God damn this was another brilliant, you-had-to-be-there show.
Happy fuckin' new year everybody; it was our night in SF tonight!
the show certainly ended on saturday, rock steady
Yes You Heathen they were very good tonight, all the stuff you said I liked also, much better than the night before..............
That's because we know what's good, Catch.
HAPPY GOD DAMN NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!
Hang on tight, here we GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...
Happy 1/1/11 yall......))
An older wiser man now am I than when I went in.
Babies and small children all around me for the New Year circus parade! The wonder in their eyes!
A beautiful and hopeful portent.
Happy New Year Everybody! It's great to be alive!
Long Live the Grateful Dead!
Hello, I survived the wookie war and had a great shoe.
Lots of notes to savour. I'm still digesting...whiskey? of course...
>>>Long Live the Grateful Dead!<<<
Yes indeed.
How I love the Grateful Dead...
And all you freaks and the glorious after-shocks that keep coming from that crazed bunch!
Long Live the Grateful Dead!
So for a more straight review, I'll say that the New Years thing was cool but odd since it was all ten minutes early.
The parade and count-down with Walton and others was fun, but it was EARLY!??!
But it made the Sugar Mag/Sunshine Daydream that much better, as the REAL midnight hour was during that absolutely OUTSTANDING version.
Phil dropped some bombs during that SD that I thought would bring the old house down.
BABOOOOOOOM!!!
ROCK & ROLL!!!!!!!!
We GOT some tonght!!!
>>>Taperrob should be in charge of all streams
fly him out and stream it up
So true.
First set looks lame, the other two look pretty strong. That third set is a wig-flipper.
wha?
new year?
i slept thru it.
hint: start taking a collection to have taperrob out there next year
^ i think that's pretty legit, actually.
how about the spring tour?
what, 20 shows @ 60 per = 1200 clams. zoners could work to transport you and put you up along the way, and we'll throw in 2 squares a day. whuddya say, rob? give up yer life for a month for us?
>>>but it was EARLY!??! >>>
guess it doesn't matter anyway
<<<hint: start taking a collection to have taperrob out there next year
HA!!! it would be sooo worth it!!! In fact they should pay YOU as their QC agent.
>>>
hint: start taking a collection to have taperrob out there next year
That would be awesome, but I think you may have been very frustrated this year because you probably would not have been able to get a connection.
There's a lesson in SIRIUS' lame trip last night.
"when life looks like easy street there IS danger at your door."
The third set looks like a fun good old GD sing and dance along. Can't wait to listen to the rebcast.
At least I got to hear Mountain Song live last night. Blows against our empire but we will get by. Happy Eleven, stay outa heaven.
>>>>>How was that Viola Lee?
The hi-light of the show for me
>>>First set looks lame
Yep, if you can't stand an Alligator opener, a kick-ass Caution, an emotionally charged Wharf Rat, and Party-worthy jiggin SOTOTW and Cumberland...oh and the two newer songs were just fine too.
Nobody around me was complaining about that first set as they were trying to catch their breath.
The Caution>Rat last night was fantastic. A great sign of things to come. I have a feeling this will be the last NYE show from this band and they played a really good.
I wish they had done a Weather Report Prelude and Part One but other than that small complaint it was a perfect New Years celebration, at least in my book.
I think it's the only GD type show, of the hundreds and hundreds I've been to, that I drank way too much by the end of that third set. I had a friend at the bar and I guess I was thinking that free drinks wouldn't effect me like paid drinks--glad my wife was there to drive me home!
>>Nobody around me was complaining about that first set as they were trying to catch their breath.
Good...on paper, it looks lame to me. The rest of the show looks killer.
"yEAH... who is the girl?" same girl as last year.....))
So in the sober light of day I sure thought it was all good. Didn't love Mountain Song, but the jam out of that into I Know you Rider was really great, and the IKYR itself just went to another level.
Other One & Let It Grow were super (this band really nails Let It Grow) a pindrop Stella with a GREAT JK finish and then a ripping full Viola with manic climax to finish the set.
But no! It's their great party anthem Golden Road to ROCK US OUT of 2010. I'll keep paying money to see sets of live music like that.
The parade was a blast as always, and the 3rd set was all great. The countdown & balloon drop coming ten minutes early along with the song they played during that was sort of odd (is that something new or another cover?) but I loved the Sugar Magnolia/Sunshine Daydream (I just love that song and always have, and it was a GOOD one!) and we were on our way again.
The 1st set was meaty, well played, set a great tone for the show and it was all great fun, but for me this show will be remembered by the 2nd set.
And Russo; he was brilliant all night.
If everyone there had half as much fun as I did then everyone had a damn fun time!
GOTTA LOVE THE PRANKSTERS WHO DID THE COUNTDOWN TO 2011 WITH 11 MINUTES LEFT IN 2010!
wher'es da rebroudcast,, worked ,,my butt off all day,, and was kinda pissed,, cause I had to work ,instead of listening to the showw,,,hence no stream,, No Regrets,, Happy new year ,, and if a rebrodcast happens post a link ,, Ty TG
>>>>Good...on paper, it looks lame to me. The rest of the show looks killer.
No... the first set was killer. I am not usually excited to hear alligator or caution, but they were both great. The wharf rat was worth the price of admission alone... I loved hearing it early in the show... great placement.
That was great fun! I have nothing to complain about Everything was aces in my book!
Wharf Rat in that placement....reminds me of 11.30.03 and 4.20.01

Hugs and many thanks to Emily for the help last night with the setlist early on!
Glad that you had a good show. You deserved it!
and fwiw, I was really hoping for an actual countdown between the Sugar Mag and the SSDD....but I believe the clock turned during the "she can make happy, any man alive" lyric....
also, kinda funny to see someone dancing like a crazy hippy in the kids' dance pit sidestage....until I saw Phil go over later and realized it was Jill. I was wondering why nobody kicked her out....
Really great night! Thanks to Lance, Garyfish and Sinatra for playing your parts in an awesome night and Boognish for warmin' us up! Nice to see my fellow freaks at the soundboard for the first set, though I never made it back down there again.
GREAT setlist! I LOVE that old stuff!
We had to decide between Claypool and Furthur, and we chose Furthur because that's where our friends would be. I feel like I only saw a handful of you, but I could feel ya! That was great!
Happy new year, everyone.
any word on 'we love you' ? that song was awesome and very psychadelic... excellent choice for first song out of the gate! WOW.\
also, thought I heard them tuning Revolution as they were about to play Truckin. There was also a very noteworthy jazz theme that I can not place that was played for a few moments before the truckin started as well then it then it fizzled out..
every song was really jammed out, sans sittin on top of the world which ended without a john solo (similar to the MSG jack straw) with a Jeff solo only...but I will say it was really well played too and that maybe John wouldn't have been able to top the jeff solo anyway..
personally I was hoping for the blues for allah to pop up here, maybe darkstar>b4a>kingsolomon>bfallah but no dice, though, just as it was getting very 'egypt' sounding at red rocks prior to the days between, there was a similar spanish/eastern sounding jam that could have slipped right into blues for allah tonight but instead, we got the let it grow. that is ok because I danced my ass off
this stella might be as good or better than the one at red rocks...or even ashville...
seemed like they were playing all the home town favorites
loved the show, but it also really makes you appreciate last years nye show, which still may be the best show furthur has played
finally, during the Truckin jam, there was a more pronounced 'mind left body jam/theme played, actually near the end of the song which lasted a little longer than the ones they played in rochester and philly.
really loved this show, and last nights and I'll be back next year for the next meltdown..
peace
STREAMING last nights show herehttp://www.freshjamradio.com/ow ,,, mmm yummy
oh yeah, the viola lee blues jam actually knocked me backwards and nearly fell down if it weren't for my seat. literally. this has never happened to me. close, maybe better than the chicago version or even msg. what am I saying. it was probably better...
technically, this tune played the part of darkstar before darkstar was written, back in 66 and 67..and that is how they played it tonight
one final note about the 30th, the cold rain and snow with john singing was a major highlight of the show complete with the 1966 style ending...very nice!
Is "We Love You" the Rolling Stones Version ?
^^^^^^STREAMING last nights show herehttp://www.freshjamradio.com/ow ,,, mmm yummy^^^^^^^^^

the 3rd set would have woke me up
but that was just on paper....
3rd set just starting
I will confirm that this is indeed the Stones "We Love You" (listening to the stream)
SWEET!
was wondering if the "we love you" was a misprint since it really has not been mentioned...sounds cool...hope they bring this one to Broomfield
Great scene. Wonderful show. It all felt like medicine to me. Thanks to the band, the GD family and everyone keeping the spirit alive.
Did anyone happen to hear what Bob said just before the final bows? Thanks.
What a wonderful show and to a very good new years for all. The music was grate, the tribe was abuzz,
smiles, smiles, smiles.....oh MP, I saw her dancing too. Might have even filmed it..Ha Ha
The ending of Unbroken Chain is really good. Sounds like they added some echo to the vocals, more so than in the past.
sounded like a "Moondance" tease before Truckin...
i needs a shoe.....
looks amazing. i love you all.
>>>Did anyone happen to hear what Bob said just before the final bows? Thanks.
"Now keep your resolutions"
also noteworthy, I think this was the first Furthur 'uncle johns' played with a jam at the end instead of just ending it 'album style'...a capella
will air on gdradio at 9pm eastern
Listening to the stream right now. sounds pretty good.
I really enjoyed the show and had a blast dancin' around with some fellow Zoners.
I'm feeling pretty happy and satisfied--even after getting attacked in the park by wookie speed freaks. Though I thwarted the aggression with slippery ninja technique.
Happy New Year to all.
Dang that was a fun party! Happy New Year! Thank you Furthur and thank you friends.
>>>>> I am not usually excited to hear alligator or caution, but they were both great.
Maybe they could played you something killer next time like Essau > Day Job instead.
I had a ton of fun. Although this band doesn't quite hit that spot for me, it's always a great time with more than enough glimmers of more to keep me coming back to the local shows and dancing my ass off all night long.
Great to rock in the new year with some of you, and Happy New Year to all!
I did not notice the dancing, are you sure you did it, or was it the yellow ring that did it?
lol......
and I agree 100%, froggy.
i just got that confirmation as well. Stones 68 - 69
the "We Love You" is great !!
this show is great !!
Thanks to uncle john and gdradio for the excellent stream !! killer sound!!
that stella was jaw fucking dropping
Now that is a great wheel.
just checking in now after new years day festivities... and Happy New Year to all.
Last night was a fun, awesome, rocking Grateful Dead dance party in San Francisco.
Furthur played a lot of really great music, and I thought the sets were interesting. Some inspiring moments, and stellar jams. Phil dropped a bomb early in The Other One that caught me off guard and froze me. Awesome!
A fabulous New Years celebration. Really, just fucking perfect! I am very happy. Cheers!
i saw/heard john play an acoustic unbroken in dc at bossa and that was unbelievable......at this show he was just tearing it up , i just wish sometimes he would break out his fiddle on the furthur stage from time to time that is surely a treat
http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=49066162 0344&comments
here is that acoustic unbroken chain
The yellow flash was pretty awesome.
>>>> Maybe they could played you something killer next time like Essau > Day Job instead.
Oh please, no....
>>>The yellow flash was pretty awesome<<<
I was hanging with you folks in front of the mixer for a good while (and a damn fine time it was) but I noticed no "yellow ring/flash". What'd I miss?
You all are sure fun to share a show with.
Carry on.
wow. wow. WOW. Russo is an animal!!!
Nice stuff on TS .....
Perfection!!!
Froggy was wearing a beautiful green ring, and when the red lights hit it, the eye would interpret the colour mixing as a bright yellow flash. Pretty neat stuff! And yeah, what a great time.
what a great time
blown away and so grateful
the bombing was stunning near the philrig
the sound was so sweet - the mix perfect
russo - yes amazing
bobstar - yes "shards" description worked well
phil - "our leader"
philnjill - big smiles - jill the dancing fool
the 2nd countdown (of 1) at midnight - was most interesting
father Bill Walton digging it - and barely able to walk -but totally able to smile
1st set a treat indeed - Alligator - r u kidding me- the rest was gravy after that
-the viloa was so a fitting indulgence (I just hope that it was not a 42 year span bookend for me, and that there is more in store)
I do not know how long it can last - but IT is still magical, and I am still stunned!
another deposit, and another withdrawal
glad so many of you were there, we were one
Long live the spirit of the fn grateful dead
every second is what you make it
and every second is precious
(lance gets it, and he expresses it well)
thanks to all - no exceptions
"I have a feeling this will be the last NYE show from this band and they played a really good."
I am hoping that we will all be back in less than a year to ring in 2012!
Laughable, at best!
Play less Grateful Dead Songs
and play more DSO songs Please!!!
obvious troll is obvious
still finding confetti in my nye attire! We were set up on the rail in front of JK and the confetti cannon. Was a blast! Happy New Years everyone!
It was a blast
we love you...........shoot me now....
LONG LIVE THE DEAD
I was there, and to be honest, I'm gonna have to agree with the critics peanut gallery.
No mess ups, no bad moments, just nothing particularly memorable. The Alligator>Caution wrap around was nice, but it seems like the boys didn't really rehearse for this run, and are more interested in playing new furthur songs (mountain song, mountain top, bad boy blues) than digging deep into the vault. We've seen them do it with east coast shows, why not for your big home-town show. WHO STARTS A SET WITH CASSIDY?! Who plays Wharf Rat 1st set. Do we really need to hear Unbroken Chain at every Furthur or Phil run?! Why give us a crappy Saturday night encore on a Friday NYE?! Not an 80s song the whole weekend.
Not trying to be a complainer, but I traveled to see them, and honestly other than the Attics encore on the 30th, and little bits of tasty jamming in Playin', Viola Lee, and Caution, nothing that really impressed me.
At this point I have seen around 10 Furthur shows and dozens and Phil and Bobby events. I feel like Furthur is becoming a compromise of commonly played popular songs.
Real happy to see Phil and Bob still playing together. There will always be critical elements since these fans (myself included) expect so much from their spontaneous and surprising musical pasts.
THis band ain't the Phil Lesh Quintet, it aint the Grateful Dead, its an agreeable pop collaboration of Dead sound. Obviously not trying to dig too deep.
Thought NYE had it's strong moments for sure. For a 4.5 hour concert, they probably played about a normal (3 hour) length of a good Furthur concert, if that makes sense. The rest was just OK, at best. New songs did nothing for me, although the jam out of Bad Boy into Caution was pretty cool. Each set had very high highlights- Caution>Wharf Rat>Sitting. Rider through the rest of set 2 and Sugar Mag, Terrapin>Help>Slip>Frankiln's in set 3.
I dug the We Love You as a cool, psychedelic start to the new year and it going right into a very hot Sugar Mag which was actually played at midnight was also very cool. We Love You was just an extra/bonus song before the new year started, was how I saw it.
Thought the Wheel and UJB were kind of tired and weak and I never need to hear Unbroken Chain again, but the last jam was pretty hot before getting to Terrapin.
But, NYE is a party and it was a great one. Was with friends I have been seeing show with since the mid 80's, mellow crowd from my vantage point. Never waited to used the bathroom or get a beer. Heck, even the very long line to get in moved quickly. A great night all around and am glad I was able to go.
Happy New Year!
Dylan, your review confuses me. I think if you do a count of the number of songs in rotation that it is well over 100 so they must be digging somewhere. They are not trying to follow the Grateful Dead approach to sets, thank goodness for that as the last few years were very predictable.....and they are trying to bring NEW music into the mix. I am glad the are not the Q or the Grateful Dead or Rat Dog....I think they are still development. Sounds to me that because you traveled and did not hear what you wanted in some prescribed order might be a bigger issue. Then again everyone has thier own perspective....and that is ok as well.
one more saturday on a friday.......hells yeah. critics.......how many times has that been done........? checking dead base X...7 times.....you guys are losers if ya didn't love that.....beecha cha's.....compaliners....eat more acid.....
Furthur really can't win, regarding setlists - they're either called a tribute band when they pull out the Grateful Dead material or they "lose interest" of many fans when they break out new originals and covers.
2010 in Northern California has been very interesting to me, mainly because I live in the Bay Area, but also because most of the 8 shows were special occasions: NYE, Phil's Birthday, Furthur Fest (3 shows), return to Golden Gate Park, then New Years Run again. These occasions seemed to call for particluarly meaningful and thematic setlists, not to mention the 6-album run at the Fest. So there were very few opportunities to "waste time" on new songs and nontraditional covers (Mully Gully breakout and Time being the exceptions). On the top of my head, I know that I experienced 5 Other Ones over those 8 shows - was that a bummer? No f-in' way! Each was different, whether flowing, pounding, slow (and long), intense, or varied. Loved them all.
So, I was wondering what this run was going to be like. Well, it looks like Furthur wanted to play some of those new originals and covers that I never heard before - a new experience (good). On NYE, they played 11 repeats from last year, but some of those 14 new songs were special to me, like the entire first set, which brought Pigpen and Jerry to the forefront (no 80's songs for Brent, though), not to mention the Stella Blue in the second. And some of those repeats I wouldn't have wanted to miss, especially the Viola>Golden Road 2nd set ending.
So keep it coming, Furthur. And please return home soon and often this year.
I know, not critical, so glitter my ass and call me Sally.
muhlberg---thats your problem right there--you have only been to ten of their shows...if you went to ten grateful dead shows during the same length of time furthur has been around you would be saying the exact same thing...and this is in no way a negative response to your post...because i can totally understand...i've had the privelege of seeing this band 38 times so far, doing entire tours, and when your on tour, they dig deep in the vault, especially in the most obscure freaking places...one perfect example i can think of is 2010-07-08 Artpark north of Buffalo NY..the entire first set were first time played of the tour, including a first ever big river...barely any tour cats came because it was out of the way from the next stop, which was already going on..all good festival..
i think that furthur thinks what they are playing is really a treat for everyone out in SF...i was not at new years eve but i've listened to both shows (they were the first ones i missed since the last SF show at outside lands)...all the big guns like the 3rd set on NYE are finely tuned versions of what they have been working on all year. a culimination if you will.
i think we are all lucky as all hell that these guys are playing let alone still writing music..the new tunes are great and they've all evolved quite a bit from their first versions, it has been a neat thing to see over time
i think furthur is great and im stoked for the colorado shows as well as some spring dates here in the east...i walk in everynight with no expectations and walk out blown away..
but what do i know, these are just my thoughts...
Personally.... I had an awesome time. I thought the setlist was played really tight. And to me..... Minus the WharfRat and Stella Blue the rest of the songs were burners.
The 1st set highlight had to be that Caution.... It was bone crushing and had some solid jamming through and through. I'll take a cumberland set closer almost anyday of the week. They play that one really well.
Set II In my opinion was the weakest of the 3 but thought the Rider was through the roof, and the Viola> Golden is again, just some great playing.
Set III..... Let's call it my Spinal Tap set. During the countdown and segue into "we love you" I saw the image of Nigal from Spinal Tap saying "we love you" during listen to the flower people... I know, but it was New Years. But from the Wheel to the Truckin was how a 3rd NYE set should be. The terrapin suite was so good. Russo is a monster.
The other Spinal tap moment came in "Unbroken Chain" with the "love your brother" line..... Again I know, it was New Years...
Awesome scene... The civic center, although cold at times was a great place to see a show. Tons and tons of dance space. I'll go again should we be so lucky to get another NYE run.
Observation-The first song they played in 2010 was Golden Road and the last song they played in 2010 was Golden Road. off to see the wizard...
Brian,
Actually 'We Love You" was the last song of 2010 since they somehow screwed up the countdown/parade by starting it and 11:40 PM.
