I heartily disagree. Bob barely sings the melody, more speaks the words. I wrote a Haiku about it for the Ratdog Haiku thread a while back:

Sing Motherfucer!
What I was thinking when Bob
Sang Lazy River

And I, Sir, disagree with your disagreement. I have a 'Doggie version of Lazy River Road from 2007- Munhall, PA I think, not sure off hand- and it is pitch-perfect, my favorite version.

Yes, Bobby sing-speaks it but I prefer that to him straining beyond his range. All of the solos are layered and sweet and they bring it all together.

(no, I'm not a Ratdog sycophant)

Just a really nice version of a fine latter-day Hunter-Garcia composition.

I was at the first performance 2/21/93 and I REALLY like that song...the last time I heard Bobby sing Lazy River was the last New Year's run and his lack of delivery overshadowed any sweetness the rest of the band brought. It's a pretty, delicate melody, but only if you sing it.

Greensboro first set was 87 minutes 2nd set was a little over 120. Not bad for guys in their 60's.

7p-11p makes sense 30 min break.
Look for heavy Bob on 2nd set, Could very well start off with accoustic maybe do a couple three songs before the drummers come on but I don't think a full blown acoustic set.
I think a scarlet will be played tonight. There was a vase with some scarlet b flowers in the white house today when they me the pres.

"phil does the jer songs justice... don't fuck with me on this one."

LOL!
Naw, I completely agree. Like Phil on Bird Song, Dark Star, etc.
Personally, I'm okay with Bob OR Phil tackling ANY Jerry tune they see fit, and considering they stood up there (and sang harmony) WITH him for 30 years, those are the guys I WANT to hear doing Jerry tunes. That said, I just think each has certain tunes that they sing better than the other. Lazy River Road, SOTM, or He's Gone I like hearing Bob while Scarlet, Franklin's, and MOTM are Phil's.

VERY nice to see A Hard Rain in the setlist, and also VERY nice to see it being the Weir version. I enjoy the P&F version with Jackie on vox also, but Weir sings that song (at the slower pace that builds to a crescendo) with SO MUCH passion it blows me away.

Glory Road is a tune by Ray Siske (sp?) an Asheville area singer/songwriter whose bar gigs Warren would sneak into when he was just a kid. A great "cowboy" song IMHO....

"i'm hoping tom thumb comes back."

Ditto brother man!!

Also wouldn't mind seeing Broken Arrow played more often again. Always one of my favorite Phil tunes. Perfect for his vocal range and ample opportunities for solo work.

.....And then there's my dream. The dream I'll never give up until we're ALL dead and gone:

If I Had The World to Give

Always one of my favorites, and the Red Rocks breakout version 8/30/78 is just amazing. Crying shame it didn't hang around (though I understand it's tough vocally and musically to fit in a set) and I would LOVE to hear Bob and Phil (together ideally) tackle it.

Smile Smile Smile!!!

Washington pre-show

It’s quite a contrast between the Greensboro venue on show day and this, the home of the Washington Capitals (who began their playoff run this week against the NY Rangers). Unlike the sunny, 75 degree weather at Greensboro, it’s a cold and rainy day here in the capital, with the temperatures in the 40s to start the day. Also in contrast is the area around the venue, with no parking lot, instead having a huge indoor parking garage attached to the arena. But, it’s one of those newer arenas that takes up an entire city block, and people have been arriving early. Everyone is in great spirits after a musically very successful start to the tour in Greensboro, and is everyone rested after a day off in DC.

One cool thing before the show was seeing photos of the band members visiting Barack Obama on the day off, very cool stuff. Huge smiles all around. Truly a mutual admiration society.

The show started quite promptly at 7:15 with two rockers Cassidy>Passenger. Phil then surprised us all with a terrific, fun Pride of Cucamonga, a rarity that got everyone dancing. A touch of Pigpen with Easy Wind, and the highlight of the set was the closing sequence of Alabama Getaway>Big Railroad Blues. Kudos to Jeff for some great organ on Alabama. The set was, as a great man once said, more fun than a frog in a glass of milk.

The second set began with a huge surprise, a mini acoustic set, featuring Peggy-O, Glory Road, A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall. Then things got WEIRD, with a spacey, deep, roof-raising jam as the band headed into Dark Star. The jam that preceded Dark Star was truly WAY out there. It was reminiscent of 10/26/89’s depths. The reaction to the first notes of Dark Star after this jam was huge. The sound filled the sold-out hall, and then more craziness ensued. Phil was playing some particularly meaty notes during Dark Star, and his new bass has such a clear, perfect tone that it was fun to follow the music along with his playing. Very nice. I could listen to this all night long. Dark Star then went into King Solomon’s Marbles, a touch of Blues for Allah. Another intricate Drums and Space went into Comes Together, Dark Star and a terrific Bobby-at-his-rock-star-best Sugar Magnolia. The house went nuts! The sound filled every nook and cranny of this very cool venue. A terrific 1970 encore of Uncle John’s Band>Ripple sent us all home smiling. Or, on to Charlottesville…

I dont know. No catastrophic Bobby blunders. I'm very proud of him. Warren melted faces too, especially first set. The acoustic set was awesome, but then the next 90 mins was uber slow and spacey. Good space but a bit too long for my liking. Didn't even notice Tipper Gore until the end when they took a bow.

Overall, I'm actually pretty damn impressed, especially since it was only the 2nd show of the tour. Surprised that the place was packed, as well.

Um, as for Bobby folks... If you haven't done so yet, read page 54 in the David Gans & Peter Simon's book "Playing In The Band." Jerry kinda breaks it down about ol' Bobby... He is the shit - Most people have just kinda followed along with history and thought it was cool to hassle him - which he takes well. Nothing wrong with being the (Rat)dog in the band to kick around.

But Jerry sheds light in this book and many other interviews about Bobby's approach. They couldn't have done it all without THAT approach folks!

Just arrived home from the show. Very spacey, which is not my usual preference. I like the rockin' tunes where you dance you're ass off. hightlights for me were Big Railroad Blues and Sugar Mag. also enjoyed UJB and Come Together. My buddy and I contemplating Charlottesville Wed night. See how I feel in the morning.

Re the sound...really great. I thought all the instruments were very clear. Was at about "30 yard line" on Warren's side."

Your correct Patsa.
I would like to know how amny of these posters actually saw the Grateful Dead and have any idea what the scene is all about?
Trashing the band members is certainly not what it is about. the music is about going out on a limb and not being afraid to fail. It is about the unknown, about what is possible, about the whole audience and the energy that is exchanged between band and audience, between band members and band members, between audience members and audience memebrs--it is a family and family members accept each other and our faults.
Enjoy the music and try not to judge. For gods sake some of these boys are pushing 70
Peace all!!
I cannot wait to celebrate this in Albany and Worchester!!

By the way Benito how right you are about Highgate. That may have been the most difficult show ever for me. I was so worried for Jerry then. As I also know they played Albany soon after that and rocked the house. It was a sweet memory for me to remember Jerry at his best.

Waves of energy
saw the show last night.
what struck me after the euphoria of the first 5 minutes wore off was this:
they've gone back to playing like they used to play.
so many night since jerry left and even some of the last couple years with garcia, they played unextended uninspired jams to tunes that typically were cornerstones of the identity of the band.

Last night, they came out of the gate with a nice extended cassidy.. and the second set (or third if you count the acoustic mini set the second) was so spacey, so exploratory, with many crescendos and ebbs, during dark star, king solomons all the way thru to sugar mags, that i realized these guys could have done a tidy set of rockin #'s with truncated jams and load up and leave town. They did the exact opposite and let the grooves build and develop.
The Drums segment of Billy and Mickey have such an ethereal feeling balanced by the hard thumping of the mini "beast".

Loved the show
loved the energy
loved the extended explorations

and Phil diggin way deep on a hard rain!!!!!!

Morning kids-

First show of four for me on this run (DC, 2 in Philly and MSG). Going in, I was a bit worried that I might not have it in me to keep my enthusiasm up for all four. After last night, I can honestly say I’m very excited for this tour. Was it a perfect show? FAR from it. The second set just meandered too much and they spent too much of the set way, way, outside – although I couldn’t help but be bemused that they just didn’t give a f**k about keeping it peppy and entertaining for those who showed up just wanting to hear Truckin’, Sugar Mags, Touch, whatever. That said, they were totally there for the show, and the potential for real magic is there with this band. Very good first set with concise versions of the songs. Passenger and Alabama ripped, in particular. Jeff has a great pumping organ sound on the rockers. Nice acoustic miniset with a passionate Hard Rain. Really, all the second set songs, and several of the jams, were spot-on. A lot of the space, particularly in and around the first half of the Star, was pretty self-indulgent, to me. But they did hit several very cool, funky jams in there as well. KSM was very intricate and well done. One of the best versions of Come Together I’ve heard any recent incarnation do. Mickey provided great drum rolls through the choruses. Great Sugar Mags with Bobby in charge. The double encore was very sweet. The Ripple was so touching and poignant that my wife and I both had tears streaming down our faces. Bobby did a beautiful job and truly SANG this one – no half-singing half-talking at all. Phil seemed truly moved by the very warm reception from the packed house.
I might just sneak off to catch one more btwn now and Philly, as two weeks seems pretty far off!

Oh, and as for the ticket scene, it seemed in equilibrium to me. A few miracle seekers here and there, but not many people either wanting or selling, which would argue for the ticket price being just about right for the demand. I think the sweet spot for prices on this tour would have been around 80, not 100, but it’s just not that far off to make a big stink over.

Heres my take on this show...Bobby was really well behaved and did a great job all around(surprisingly YES)his acoustic sounded great, good vocals and great guitar work. The only thing i can beef on was him cutting off BRRB too soon, it may have been time to cut it so it may not have been his fault..The drummers were good, the drums was solid. The whole Dark Star thing was really well done, and i'm not a huge DS fan.

The main thing i'd like to say is that they played as a collective ONE whole, no real individuality or showboating, they played together as a well oiled unit of jammyness..
So it all kinda meshed in together for me, it was clear they were doing their best and it was working, they know it sounded good.

Phil sounded great on vocals also.Very solid as usual.

Warren was good and kept in a good groove of not taking over, perfect IMO..

Jeff was good also but he seems to be having a hard time finding his spots to be heard, when he did he was good.

I was almost expecting Bobby to start hopping around on stage during Sugar Mag, they ripped that up good..

Bobby deserves huge credit for it all coming together, there were moments where i was expecting him to screw up the tempo or mumble an important vocal verse, BUT HE NEVER DID, he kicked ass the whole night..

Bucky would have loved this show, he came to mind more than once last night.I was thinking THEY REALLY DO read Buckys posts. :-)

Hey everyone...
WOW!!! First of all thanks to all of you that have taken the time to submit your reviews of the shows. I am going to the two NY shows and am growig more and more psyched by the minute. It seems as if my biggest fear for this tour appears to have been unfounded (knock on wood) Listening to the shows Bobby sounds amazing. I can't believe it myself. I have been seeing a large amount of Phil and Bobby shows over the past few years, and I ALWAYS leave Phil shows wanting more, sadly I find myself not even wanting to stay for the Ratdog encores... Looks like all Bobby needed was a kick in the ass from Phil to get his ass back in the groove...

Can't wait to post my reviews on the NY Shows...

Why is ARCHIVE being all screwy right now... says last night's show can;t be found???

Quasar 1, dnem 0

This was the balls to the wall 6 guys, 12 arms, one mind take no prisoners monster! The outside was OUTSIDE, every curve had purpose and flow and Warren is playing BUBBLY and meshing perfectly. Cya in Cville.
Peace,
Jake

>>The outside was OUTSIDE<<
agreed man

what great theater,
no spotlights an any one individual, literally. they were of group mind and sound.

hey now, easy there. A lot of the outside was there, but not all, to me. but overall, I LOVED the show. also, a little tougher for me, as we met up with some folks who had never really been on the bus and you want them to be entertained and i could see that quite a bit of the second set was lost on them. they loved the "in" parts, just no so much the "out".

hey I can't take credit for that review up there, that was just a courtesy cross-post off Dead.net (the link in the beginning of the post).

Can't wait to hear these shows. My cousin, about 10 years my younger, called me this morning to good natured-ly curse me for indoctrinating him into the Dead Head world. Greensboro was his first Dead related/family show. He was/is a Phish fan but was visibly moved by what we saw/experienced. Now he's hooked. Asked me if we could drive to MA this weekend . . . from NC! LOL.

The magic lives on!

What I have listened to so far clearly demonstrates this band is getting better each night.
Cassidy is much tighter than Roseland. In Sugar Mag Bob plays GSET chords and the SSDD is righteous!
By Friday who knows? It may be incredible.
((((Patiently awaiting mind blow))))

Agreed Sully!!

Sounds phenominal, which leads me to believe that all these "Dead" incarnations later, this lineup is proving that less (and Lesh) is more!

I was nervous with just Warren and Jeff joining the original four, but the sound they're producing is clear, tight, and well rounded. No competing for leads which we DID see in previous tours. Kudo's to Bob and Phil for having the foresight to believe in this lineup, and kudo's to Warren for finding his place in the band. Can't wait for Denver and Los Angeles!

The quality of the recording is terrific, and thus far (I'm only up to Hard Rain) musically they're blowing me away.

Man I can't wait for Albany (through Philly on my journey).

Seeeeey'all there.

Highgate 95 was a train wreck. Jerry was VERY high and not with it. For me it was scary. But everyone sees the show through their own eyes. You must have been the eyes os the world!

This show is a rocker tight from start to end strange segues but a 20 minute first half of dark star this show rocks. It seems while trying to rely on some old standbys they are also trying to get a new fresh identity and mix it up a bit

Listened to parts of both shows. Sounds good, but still not "sold" on spending $100 to see it. Of course I have till the middle of May before they hit Shoreline, so we'll see... Definitely better than I was expecting and Warren and Jeff are great additions, and I am not a huge Warren fan.

The Bobby news is the best thing I've heard on the scene for a while. If he's found his way back to something like his old self, I'm just so happy for him on a human level. The setlists are good news too on the spacey level - if Weir [and the other 2] are willing to do the Anthem/Aox stuff like this, then it's very comforting to think that they are willing to go along with what is obviously one of Phil's major preferences - and that bodes well for their human level communication - and thus more experimentation and give and take on all sides.

They've never really been *that* comfortable together since Jerry - who was of course the glue - passed on. Maybe in 1998, but since... hmmm.... however this now feels like a genuine melding.

Let's hope it lasts through the tour [remember 2004...]

late review here, apologies ...

wound up getting super high to the point where i guess i missed the whole first set!

oh well... looking at the setlist, no big deal.

what a second set though! i totally loved every minute of it. from the opener, peggy o, all the way through to the end. smokin'.

i do think this might be the last dead tour though, that's what i was thinking. wish i could catch msg, but planning on hitting the tues medowlands show. no way i can do one show on the last tour, especially having missed a whole set!

honestly, it was better than i expected and i even went to the three nyc shows a few weeks ago! holy fucking drums!!

Just got done listening to the Dark Star Suite.

Let's just call it what it is:

THE PHIL LESH SHOW!

Peace.
