Let's get the show on the road.
Bobby first set tonight. I'm thinking for tonight,
maybe a baby blue, crazy fingers, end the first set with scarlet or unbroken and maybe open the 2nd set with Alligator
Any thougths?
im liking crazy fingers for tonight
I know Terrapin is coming but I'm not sure about tonight. I guess it is possible (anything is possible) maybe to end the show.
Of course it is a second show in a row and they jammed more last night so upbeat songs might be the order.
i am feeling terrapin for the nj shows
where i s everyone
Weir Everywhere
true enough
same folks over here too
Gotta be an Eyes tonight, in the Phil set, probably Unbroken Chain...
time for a Bertha as well
Feel Like a Stanger
I dig Chimenti's keyboards on Stranger
I'm feeling Eyes for Albany. Maybe TOO or a Scarlet tonight?
When does the show start? Any streaming vid on here?

nice set so far
Is this a link to the audio. If so, I don't see how to listen.

So did Warren sing the speedway. I'm sure he sang the High Time or am I. At least he did on the04 tour.
check gdradio for streams
Phil usually sings Speedway with P&F, but im not sure who sang it tonight
nothing on gdradio
I'm pretty sure Jackie Greene sang NSB it on the last Phil tour.
Oh thanks I didn't know that Phil sang it too.
So if he sang it then we would have Phil
Speedway, Mason's. So this could be the making of a Phil set.
Jackie sang NSB last few phil tours
stream MAY be on live 365 at
http://www.live365.com/cgi-bin/mini.cgi?station_na me=2012_live&tm=6409
but depends on who is taping and can upload it- the first show set 1 was going at set break, second show still never made it up...
Yea I thought Greene sang it. I'm only asking as I am tracking the songs and will a complete for all when the tour is over. Just one of those things I do. An old stat head I am
Phil did sing Speedway in the Q days or am I mistaken?
its still not a live stream
TaperRob is the one who uploads to Live365, and it was his tape that was on there for the first show. He won't be at another show until next week, so you probably won't see the recent shows up on there.

How was the Mason's? That thing can get rolling like a freight train. Love it.
Looks like David threw Speedway in the set twice on Dead.net... Strange.
Anyone know if the Live 365 show that is currently playing is tonights show?
Thanks tons & puff! ekoostikal
Lookin' Mighty Fine!!!!
Not. It is G-Boro from the other night...
SOTM
Nups... did you make that? ^^^^
David must be having a good time at the show for him to write it twice
Nups, is that one of a kind or are there others?
Geez, I can't remember very many, perhaps ANY version of New Speedway that has Phil singing verses.
They'll all look interesting on paper. Curious to hear how it sounds. DC sounded pretty good in most spots.
Seriously that SOTM piece is GRATE. how do we get in on this???
bobby on SOTM...aaarrrfffff! This one should be warren for sure. I hope bobby doesn't sing the wharf rat or the comes a time, by golly. Surely Warren or PHil will sing the Dew.
Hey Onthebusin03-
Check out 11-10-01 from L'ville Phil sings that Speedway for sure. Super high energy show from the night Kesey died

Hey G

Ando, what's up! Phil singing first tune is awesome. It shouldn't suprise anyone that phil sings the speedway IMO. Show looks good so far. SOTM on new years was acceptable, I thought, but don't get me started on Weirs attempt at Wharf rat that night. I'm sure they'll work out the kinks, though. That Louisville 01 show was special indeed...don't forget the Do it in the Road and Revolution(warren), both of which made that show awesome as well. And who could forget the Black Peter with Phil on vocals. I hope he will sing that one as well as the Dew this time around with this band.
actually, I think Bobby sings SOTM nicely
G-
Have You Listened To Last Night Yet?
Me too! The final show of the 2003 Dead tour at the Gorge (how I wish I could make it back there this tour as well!), Bobby sang a truly beautiful SOTM. Made me cry then, and makes me cry now listening to it.

I am hoping for the terrapin flyer-at a siding with this band though. I did listen to that hard rain from last night and thought that was great.
The KSM from last night is kinda slow, doesn't really go anywhere... however, if you haven't listened to the Peggy-O yet, do so immediately. Fantastic.

I was over on Dead.net and saw this post - This has got to be one of the most classic posts I've read in years!!!
*************************************************
hello all,
have been reading and digesting and ruminating the comments on how the music is going, especially the lineup (warren). i, too, have been swayed and even initiated from within me an aversion to warren as lead guitar; upon listening to the the 12th and 14th, i am pleased. what i would like to add to the conversation, wideky differing opinions of which i find myself oftentimes agreeing with despite the divergent views, is that for me to expect anyone sitting in with the core four to be as stunning as in old is unrealistic. the story of the acid tests, and feeling as if a finger on one hand while playing in the band, multiplied times 30 years, tempers my own severeness of criticism on my better spiritual days. and in the end, aint the aversion to replication or imitation the reason we love this stuff? peace to all. hope to connect and share and exalt in philly with you my fellow travelers - David
************************************************
Classic.
I can easily see a Dew coming up here though.

cold rain, stranger, bird song are coming up.
Although I think bird song and eyes are two to be saved for Branford
I just noticed no Dylan tonight.
Think we could get a baby blue encore
And boss man is the only cover
Throw me in a Creampuff War, Terrapin, Eyes, Dew, and/or China>Rider at any point and I'll leave happy.
C'mon...I'm not askin' for too much.
I agree with that post of Davids... As much as we miss Garcia. Trying to duplicate him, style wise that is would only seem a weird character of Jer... I mean it was the man behind the notes who provided the vibe we all dug. Warrens got some good vibe of his own and I like that. But David is correct in that unless you lived it as the core has... things will never be what they once were and well... thats what the band is all about... I look forward to seeing this tour and am thankful the music can still be heard live. I remember heads sitting on the outskirts of shows I attended saying it was never the same without Pig... and watched us enjoying our version... I enjoy watching the younger generation enjoying thier version. Though.. It will never be the same with out Jerry.. peace
no cold rain bro...it's gonna be 70 with not a cloud in sight on friday.

Strange. Maybe he's hearing noises.... ;^)
Gloria, awesome bobby choice; "better than tv!" and as far as chicago goes, I hope they save the spaciest for last, at least before they go out west...don't know who would be wishin for shows that arent spacey. not me. I hope the set2 it goes something like Playin>newpotatoe>Darkstar>rosemary>dsverse2>cauti on>cream puff war>born crosseyed>drums/space>cryptical>otherone mts of moon>strawberryfields>playin reprise...golden road encore
Foolish Heart after the Playin reprise would make sense. This would be an AWFUL short show otherwise (two songs pre Drums/Space and 3 after with a reprise to end it?) AND "Foolish Heart" is a hell of a closer, so my guess is that's correct.
Can anyone confirm of deny?
"Then came Foolish Heart, one of Jerry’s finest latter-day compositions. It had a nice little jam in the middle."

Yes I made that, thank you, and yes it is a one of a kind, you will NEVER find another, honest man.
And it's Basswood, and yeah I use a wood burner, but it's not the cheap little deal you'll find at the craft store. This is a little better than that, I can get the tips (interchangeable) to glow red in seconds. So you can rock out pretty quickly, so when I say I got 7 hours in something, (like the Hunter above) for the typical craft wood burner you can easily equate that to quadruple the time without batting an eye, cause I started out with a cheap craft one so I'm well aware of the time this has saved me. What I have now is incredible.
Now damn nice looking setlist tonight, still holding out for a Terrapin on friday and how about a Jam > HCS > Golden Road opener.
With a little Scarlet > Fire, and a Rosemary > Drums > Space > O1 > Terrapin in set two.
Thanks for the info Nups...
I did not think that you had amateurish tools to create that nice work.
I saw the other woodburn artifact in the Hunter vs. Garcia thread and appreciated both, with the mirror-image stealy-outlines. Very nice work.
If you want some nice white or red Oak slices, I'll cut you some for free. I'm in central Nj and will try to make at least one Philly or Brendan Byrne show. I log and deal firewood so it's par for the course.
Nice work and it looks beautiful.
I'm glad to see u's;don't have any pre-conceived notions and are willing to surrender to the flow....

Are there any reviews from anyone
who actually attended the show ?
slacking on the reviews today... Come on guys only the third show we can't be losing steam already!
There are a few reviews showing up on .net.
http://www.dead.net/4-15-john-paul-jones-arena
Still haven't seen anything on etree or archive yet to hear this show.
Well, speaking as someone who has not seen or heard the show, I would like to say I thought the first set was really musical. Good energy, with some tasteful Warren. I thought Phil played the bass, and Weir probably some kind of guitar. I was very impressed with the drummers, because there were two of them. In terms of keys, I think Jeff Chimenti probably has played before. The songs were performed. Many of them have been performed before, by various people. In conclusion, yes.
The second set was equally played, with several people making noises at the same time, which I thought was nice. There were several songs that had not been played in the first set. After the second set there was some sort of break, which only lasted a few minutes or so, followed by another song. Not sure what that was about.
I hope this has been helpful. Feel free to add anything else you want.
>> we can't be losing steam already!
hey, the Dead are old - so are the heads...
a wet one last night.
despite the grey, cold, rainy evening, there was a bustling lot "scene" and a pretty healthy few rows of shakedown going on.
i was running late so i didnt really delve into a whole lot of pre-game time.
There seemed to be plenty of upper tickets available for way below face, i didnt see any huge stacks of freebies or anyone throwing away tickets and you could definitely get a good lower / floor for below face with some haggling. (i kept thinking of the chancellor's "you aint got a hair on your ass..." statement.)
Once inside, the crowd was well behaved if not a bit subdued. Ive seen other bands at the JPJ and i thought it was those other bands, but i think its just the C'ville crowd. We rage, but we stay between the lines I guess.
The first set had some really great moments, particularly the jam outta Mason's and the jam outta Rag. i think it may have been the slowest Big Boss Man ever and I dont think I ever want to hear another Bobby talky-singy Standing on the Moon. Its a shame, because Warren was right there and could really do that song justice I think.
High Time was sweet, nothin fancy, just love that tune.
Second Set was really fun in my opinion.
The Playin' was a monster, very stretched out.
They teased the hell outta the Crazy Fingers coming outta Playin' and took their sweet time getting there which was cool, but the anticipation proved better than the songs effect overall on the set's energy...if that makes any sense.
I was diggin the Drums / Space for about 75% but found the Space section to drag a bit at the end. I just wanted the drummers to return and get some rhythm going again by the end of it.
It was worth the wait though. Stephen>Eleven was ecstatic and they played all around the Eleven for a good while before actually dropping in. This was definitely the meat of the 2nd set and the crowd finally got movin'
Love Half-Step, but not in that spot, Bobby brakes indeed and it just always remind me how much I really want to hear Jerry belt out "acroooooooosss the RIO GRANDEEEEEEOOOOO!"
I like Foolish Heart, nice surprise there.
Gloria...eh, whose got my heady balloon? and im not paying $10 either ;-)
Overall a fun night out in the hometown and lots of folks coming outta the hills for this one. The sound in the venue was weird the first set, but definitely dialed in crisp and clear the second set....and plenty loud by the second set, too. The band seems to be listening and interacting well but it is strange to see Phil less in the "lead" role, standing back and to the side in his bass corral.
I also realized that I like Warren's playing alot more than I previously had but wish there was more stratification in the overall sound. It would be good if he stood out a bit more.
This band needs a LEAD guitar.
I dont know, perhaps a bit "brighter" tone or something. Maybe he just needs to be turned up. It just seemed that perhaps he was being a bit too respectful. Step on some toes Warren!
I was there and it was spectacular. This was a Grateful Dead concert. It was the best night of Grateful Dead music ever played in this town and, yes, I was at 9/14/82.
Mason's was incredible. It went WAY out there... reminded me of the Cole Field House '81 Bird Song. New Speed and High Time were also really good, as was Rag. Bob butchered Big Boss Man and Standing... just take the man's microphone away, please. It's not enough that he can't remember any lyrics, but his voice is history.
2nd set was totally Off The Hook (with exception of Bob's butchering of Half Step). Playing > Crazy was ~28 minutes, and it was easily a 5 minute Phil-driven into to Crazy. The Stephen middle jam was very long, very intense, as were the 11 jams... 2 vocal reprises during 11 by Bobby. After the Half Step debacle, the Jam back into Playing was flawless, and Foolish Heart was great. Gloria brought down the house, despite Bob's shot voice. Spectacular stuff! Worlds better than DC (which I quite enjoyed).
They're BAAACCKK.
Who sang Foolish Heart?
Still not up on the LMA but thanks for the reviews. Can't wait for tomorrow,it seems like eternity since Roseland.
Bob sang Foolish Heart. There was also a few bars of "purple Haze" in the middle of "Eleven".
How long was the second set?
Thanks!
I'm not a big fan of the 'vocal reprises' by Weir on the eleven. Just sing it the way phil does it in his band(or the way the Grateful Dead did it in the sixties). This is where bobby needs to check his ego. And I was really hoping for Phil to have sung the half step or the foolish heart. It figures bobby would fuck up the big boss man and SOTM, as mentioned earlier. Why, God, doesn't the man sing his own songs? He has plenty of 'em to choose from and most of them are great! So once again, my prayer goes out...please Bob, stick to your own songs! Don't even try thinking it is even close to as good as if Phil or Warren would sing. You can pull that stuff off with your own band, don't act like the dead is your "own" band. This is not ratdog...where bob sings every song. There is something greater going on here with this band and you stick out like a sore thumb when you try being the leader. Why do you think Jerry wanted no part of 'leading' this band?! It is lead by the stars in the sky. Maybe it should be the core three...they did it in 2000 without PHil, maybe they could pull it off without weir.we will just get Jackie to sing bobs songs
>>>>>please Bob, stick to your own songs! Don't even try thinking it is even close to as good as if Phil or Warren would sing.
If Phil can sing?
Has it got that bad?
WITHOUT A DOUBT...This tour is off to its BEST start in the post Jerry era!!! WITHOUT A DOUBT!!!
First, Anybody who thinks that a band is led by the stars in the sky has never been in a band. Secondly, Weir has more experience leading bands than anyone else on that stage, Warren included, (Phil mentions his development as a bandleader as early as 71-72 in "Searching" - Warren was 11) and knows the material and the words better than anyone else, and let's not forget the darker days of the 80s when Weir was very much the only frontman. Third, Warren cannot lead this band: it has its own chemistry, as most of the guys who have joined it can tell you (Brent, Vince, Hornsby, Herring have said so explicitly). Fourth, Ratdog has a catalog of 160-plus songs, which is a lot to remember; Weir is dyslexic and has stage fright every night; they have rearranged a number of the tunes (Warren has also gotten confused with the tunes he's been singing). All this ripping on Weir doesn't help anything, and even if it did, at least put forth an INFORMED critique.
Also, how about Mickey for Most Underrated this tour? Nobody has commented here, but he's brought a new sound to the band, and all that Space/Drums stuff he's been doing is mind-melting, I think
G Brown?
Formally of K-zoo?
Hey Stu, if you want, shoot me an email.
Not sure if we're gonna be making any of those shows, they're not on the schedule right now, but you never know.
I'd love to talk to you more about that. Not sure how burning on Oak would work out, real hard wood. Bass as you know, I'm sure, is super soft. I've done some stuff on Pine too, thats kind of a bitch with all the sap in the tree but burnable. I'll have to find a scrap piece of oak and see how that works out. Hmmm.
>Also, how about Mickey for Most Underrated this tour? Nobody has commented here, but he's brought a new sound to the band, and all that Space/Drums stuff he's been doing is mind-melting, I think
Agreed, lots of new chimes and goooey deep space...much more listen-able than any other era of "drums" imo
>I'm not a big fan of the 'vocal reprises' by Weir on the eleven. Just sing it the way phil does it in his band(or the way the Grateful Dead did it in the sixties).
nah, i like Weir's version better...gets too cluttered with the back and forth, imo...it's one of the FEW Jerry songs that i like Bobby singing.
This show rocked. Period. Those arguing about whom should sing what, or nitpicking about the musical arrangements aren't seeing the forest for the trees. It was a beautiful night of incredible music.
Heck, I'd go so far as to say that the G'boro and C'ville shows (didn't go to DC) beat the socks off some of the shows I've seen from '85-'95.
I am so excited. After much speculation to the contrary, these guys are sounding GREAT! Nothing left to do but
WONDERFUL comments Benito, and I look forward to HEARING the Big Boss Man and SOTM, 'cause I HIGHLY doubt Bob butchered them!
Big Boss Man is generally delivered a bit slow for my ears (but tastefully) but Bob has done a FANTASTIC job with SOTM on many occasions.
Heck, Bob's SOTM from Red Rocks 2007 (sung while wiping tears from his face. This was when Mark was at home struggling with cancer plus the obvious Jerry reference) is my son's FAVORITE version of that song (INCLUDING Jerry versions!) and while I can't go THAT far, I CAN say it was emotional, beautiful, passionate, and VERY well played and sung.
Bottom line is WAY too many people think it's the "cool" or "heady" thing to do to bash Weir, but personally I think it's ludicrous. This band wouldn't exist without Weir, and it blows me away that so many fail to recognize that.
As far as I'm concerned, Bob OR Phil can sing ANY Jerry song ANY time they want, and kudo's to them for adding them to the repertoire. Bash away, but to not recognize that this guy sings over 150+ songs HIMSELF is to bury your head in the sand and not appreciate what is happening.
On with the regularly scheduled Bob bashing idiocy.
has anyone been able to get the show off archive?
i dont think they show is up yet
Been waiting all day, and the show's still not up on the archive.
Okay...I'm officially spoiled.
I've really enjoyed the recordings I've heard, and it seems like the people who are going to the shows with open hearts and open minds just looking to have good times are in fact having a GREAT times I'm going to both Meadowlands shows. Can't wait!
You won't catch me hating on Weir. Yeah, his voice sucks sometimes, but the Dead isn't about killer vocals - never was and never will be. I couldn't care less if he flubs a line or two. He's a great rhythm guitarist, and he's Bob Weir for God's sake.
weir is awesome. plain and simple.
I don't give a fuck who sings it I've always hated SOTM and wish they would never play it!! Same with Black Muddy River Filled With Sewage!!!
I hated em when Jerry sang, and when Phil sings em, and I don't like it when Bob sings em.
Hell I sang SOTM the other day myself and I hated myself for doing so!!!!
So far from the 2 shows I've heard they sound terrific with minimal screw ups and I love the setlists.
EXCEPT FOR SOTM!!! BOOOOOO!!!!
So wait Jake,
You are telling someone that was at the show that they are wrong about something that happened at a show you were not at or have even heard.
You get a big ATTA BOY for that...............
Some people's kids........
In Jake's defense. He did not say that anyone was wrong
Benito, don't take it so bad. I wasn't bashing weir anymore than his bandmates would bash him, jokingly and he can take it, obviously more than you. They are pranksters, after all. Heck, they might make bob sing it just to stirr controversy. Like I said, if it was a trade-off, I would much rather have warren sing the high time, IMO.(than sotm)I Seems like anyone who questions weir is considered a basher. You would have fit in well with the reich.. It's not a witch hunt. Just my opinion is what I write. Ultimately, it is awesome, all of it. And I am very excited to see the shows I'll see this tour, as always. I'm always up for new interpretations, I guess I just miss the way Bobby used to sing/play his own tunes back in the day. Personally, I cant think of a time in gd history that the band came out for a second set, played 35 minutes of darkstar verse1, then King solomons marbles into drumz. Personally, less lyrics, more space and jamming is what I like...then out of space with come together,dsv2,sugarmags was awesome. I know that this night in Charlottesville was a ripper as well. just cause someone critiques your hero doesn't mean you need to gallop in for the rescue, bro. I thought this was the phil zone, after all. By supporting warren and phil, this doesn't mean I am bashing Bob. Ive been a bob weir fan as long as Ive been a deadhead.Personally, I would rather he sing picasso, or eternity than attempt a jerry tune. Or sing bob dylan tunes. The hard rain brought tears to my eyes;in a good way(agian). It is just, when he sings sotm, it reminds me too much of how much I miss jerry, i guess. too painful. But it seems it is set in stone that it is his tune, now. So be it. I'm not gonna let that prevent me from enjoying a show, just like I didn't everytime Ive seen bob sing it before now. The wharf rat is the same IMO.
Hell I sang SOTM the other day myself and I hated myself for doing so!!!!
ROTFLMAO
"I don't give a fuck who sings it I've always hated SOTM and wish they would never play it!! Same with Black Muddy River Filled With Sewage!!!
I hated em when Jerry sang, and when Phil sings em, and I don't like it when Bob sings em."
Phil and Boob I get..But Jer? You must be lacking in the soul department!
Whoa nelly!!
When did I say someone was "wrong"?
I simply said that I was interested to hear it for myself because the Bobby SOTM's that I HAVE heard have been mostly stellar. I said I would be surprised if he butchered it.
I did NOT however claim to know anything about THIS version (yet) or tell anyone they were wrong.
"Some people's kids."
Why do SO MANY of you here feel the almost compulsive need to be assholes?
It's downright staggering considering the scene we all (well, most of us anyway, or so I thought) came from, yet every day people here attack others unprovoked. It's unfortunate and sad. Get a grip buddy.
The "atta boy" goes to you for your COMPLETE lack of reading comprehension and subsequent a-hole comments directed my way.
Greg,
Fair comments and I understand your feelings. Obviously Bob excels with his own songs 'cause they are catered to his vocal abilities and musical style, and yes, ABSOLUTELY the SOTM, Days Between, So Many Roads, or Wharf Rats can be painful just 'cause they make us ACCUTELY aware of Jerry's absence.
That said, I personally really ENJOY those songs (Bob or Phil) BECAUSE they make me miss Jerry. It's sad, and it's brought tears, but it's ALSO brought us together as a community (Red Rocks '07 with 9k people in tears was just amazing) and allowed those songs to breathe new life and while it makes ALL OF US that were there think of Jerry, for me it also honors him, and I'm all for that.
Just my .02
Jake
>>>hopefully they've got the spaced out second set out of their system before Chicago
BLASPHEMY!! If anybody from the band is reading, please ignore this yokel, and make the second set in Chicago spaced-THE FUCK OUT!!! How about Dark Star(v1)->Love Supreme->Mind Left Body Jam->Drums/(Long)Space->Cryptical->TOO->MOTM->What 's Become of the Baby->Rosemary e: Dark Star (v2)->Strawberry Fields Forever
yes! yes! dont forget blues for allah(with lyrics)
lacking in the soul departmant????!!!!!
This from a boob that calls bob a boob!
SOTM and BMW are two of the worst songs in the Garcia/Hunter canon.
This is just my opinion like it or not!
i love the dead
I love em too!!
Greg...U told me that you liked the SOTM from '02 (TOO - Allstate)?!?!
Yeah - I'm on the same side of Bobby, "Please don't make this a Ratdog show" Please let Warren and/or Phil sing the Jerry tunes. Go back and listen to Lazy River on 3-30, when Warren takes his verse it's a beautiful sound and when Bobby takes his it's just plain bad.
I downloaded most of this show and right from the beginning I couldn't believe Bob was singing Speedway, you got to be kidding me and then he forgets the words right out of the gate, give be break, give us all a break!
And then I listened to High Time and man what a difference - Thank you Warren! And then back down hill for SOTM. boy o' boy Bobby ruins it for most of us.
And then I scrolled down to DL 1/2 step and Holy F'n Shit I'm throwing in the towel, Bobby taking vocal lead on 1/2 Step - Fuc Phil what next? you gonna let bobby sing Terrapin.
I'm really looking forward to this tour and won't be happy if it continues in this manner. Bobby Please stop trying to sing the Jer tunes especially when you talk through them like it's a nursery school rhyme, it reminds me of when Mickey was singing Fire.
Phil take the Power back!
I just want to know why it took them so long to get back after the break. The house lights went down & then... Nothing! They kept us sitting in the dark for at least 10 mins.
There was few bars of "Purple Haze" in the middle of "Eleven" that went on for about a min. or so. Very cool if you caught it!
I think they sound better then they have in a very L O N G time! There back!!!
You dont like Bobby singing or spacing lyrics? Save yourself a few bucks & dont go. The older he gets, the more he's going to forget. Be happy for the here & now!
people have been Bobby bashing since I started listening to the Dead in 1987 (regularly that is). I would assume it started before that. Guess some things never change.
Hey, at least he's not Donna Jean, bless her heart .
Every silver lining has a touch of gray... look for it and it will be there
I'm just glad I have a show to go to- and I'm sure it will be just as perfectly imperfect as the rest of the shows I've seen over the decades.
With Bobby...ya know it aint easy bein cheesy!!!
nuff said!
I miss Jerry!!
the show is up on bt.etree.org
>>hopefully they've got the spaced out second set out of their system before Chicago<<
What?!? Here's to hoping we spend four hours (two each night) traveling distant space, in vibrant colors and nebulous forms, with The Dead Hubble Telescope.
Jake, I was at that Red Rocks show and completely agree with you, the SOTM was beautiful and very tearful for me and everyone. While Bobby does fuck up songs, so does Phil and Warren and Jerry. It happens. Oh well. Cant wait for the Denver show!
peace/love
yeah I hear what y'all are saying, enjoy all we get and be happy, and yes believe me I do. And it's OK to have an opinion too. But when that euphoric feeling we got during shows when Jerry was with us is within reach as it may be this tour, and we all know it. It's just hard to not cringe a bit when bob sings those tunes, I'm sorry but he just doesn't give them justice. And it's just that you either like bob or not.
So enjoy the music and thus far I've heard some sic jams come from the recent shows, looking forward to the west coast. peace
"boy o' boy Bobby ruins it for most of us."
No, Bobby "ruins it" for a VERY select group of you, many of which congregate here.
Ross, thanks for chiming in on the Red Rocks show. Hope to see you at the Can. Shoot me a message as it gets closer!
personally, i don't believe that it is a matter or liking bobby or not. It is not that simple. Actually, the big boss man was handled nicely, and the less phil and warren sing in a set the more special it is when they do. The sotm is bobs tune. period. yeah warren did it with phil spring 02, and we all hoped he would sing it more. when i heard the sotm on the stream the vocals were bothersome, but in the end, it was phil lesh playing on it and who knows, maybe(probably) it was phil's decision to have/let bob sing it. so we have to respect that. There seems to be a trade off, and the choices, imo, are great. I also like the sharing of lyrics on many of the songs. Like there are Phil tunes, bob tunes, warren tunes and then tunes like uncle johns or masons that everyone sing on. I am just glad warren sang the doin that rag and played that jam at the end like I remember him playing it with the Q, maybe better. It sounded awesome. Like I posted before, these guys are pranksters at heart and there may or may not be a reason they choose who sings what. I am just glad because when I hear phil play that lead on sotm with his bass, it conjours up the spirit of jerry nicely, and when I hear phil, i know it is real. Maybe it is bobbys opportunity to vent his true sadness that his friend/bandmate has passed and he is still letting go. either way, its bobs tune, now.
someone starts playing Foolish Heart at the beginning of Half Step, then stops... kinda funny
Bob's vocal phrasing in Foolish Heart sucks all the energy out of it.
Finally got to listen to this SOTM, and while it's a far cry from the afore mentioned Red Rocks version in 2007, it's also far from being "butchered" in any way. Bob (as always) sings it with heart and soul and does the tune justice.
Not quite as powerful (as it builds to a crescendo) as some other versions, and not as well delivered as is often the case, but well done none the less.
