I know it is a little early but what are your predictions.
A sick SHOWWWWWWWW
super sick...
I am feeling an estimated eyes actually!!!!
Oh yeah a sick city show!!!
hope to hear a jazzy Shakedown, and more jazz covers, Coltrane!
Any suggestions for a good pint before the show?
I am sure this show is gonna be one of the best
they love MSG
On the MSG website it says to enter at 6:30?? show starts at 7:30. Does security+lines really take 1 hour? Any zoners meeting for drinks before the show? Where?
There are tons of bars. Blarney Rock is close to the garden and Rattle and Hum is a cool micro brew pub.
i do chinese every time before th MSG shows... and booze up there, then dose, then go in...my ritual...
any guests showing up? branford, to get ready for Byrne?
jazz at the byrne with branford
Do you think any guests will sit in on Sat. night?
TIR NA NOG
Shakedown fer sure and One More Sat Night.
Shakedown opener?
^^^
Bkwheel, for a really good pint try Gingerman on 36th near Madison.
Great selection of brews on tap from all over the world.
Another place for good brews Blind Tiger.
Shakedown opener please.
thanks Sycamore Gingerman looks primo !
I am so ready for this show the mind swirls w
possiblities
Lookin for 2 extras. Help me out Please! Brookstd85@gmail.com
What's Blind Tiger about? Never been. Gingerman is almost like a midtown office party... kind of sedate. But over fifty great beers on tap, and some nice comfy couches to chill on, make it a great spot near MSG. Always a favorite pre-show spot for me, even if to avoid the standard Heineken or whatever commercial brew.
Blind Tiger is the best beer bar in the city. Great atmosphere, great people and a fantastic selection of beer. It's in the west village, so a short cab ride or a couple of stops on the subway.
I wanted to get this out there before all the haters....
the the best of my knowledge the internet blogs were not big in 1993-95. I am sure if they were, we would seen a ton of....jerry was off tonight or so and so F*(#$% up the lyrics.
My point is there has been far to much of the ( it was a bobby show...or phil cant sing or this was not worth 100 bucks)
I only saw them play 3 shows in 95 and they were not good! But I still am thankful that I saw the shows.
I have not seen any MSG bashing yet....
But lets face it JG is not going to be on the stage on Sat...
Lets enjoy the fact that the core 4 are playing again...and if you ask me the MUSIC that the DEAD is playing sounds great! Now It is not the Grateful Dead... But going into this I did not expect it to be and hope no one else did.
I caught albany and woooooster and will be at MSG...the MUSIC is only getting better with each night!!
Enjoy the weather and see you all at MSG!
very well said John Green
We should enjoy to the fullest while we can
Life can be short !
NYC & THE DEAD WHAT NEED MORE BE SAID
a long history for sure

haha, so true. I bought the first few shows and its all I have been listening to. I think they sound great and of course there are the forgotten lyrics and lost jams, just like in the Grateful Dead! All I can say is as an 18 year old who loves this music I am very grateful they decided get on the stage again together so younger people like me can see them play together. I don't want a replica of a grateful dead sound, Just seeing them play together with so much history on the stage will be an experience I will remember forever, especially seeing them next to my dad who saw the Grateful Dead all throughout the years. So psyched for tonight!
I agree with J Green, I'm happy they're together and playing, and I'd rather listen to these guys playing my favorite kind of music even if the sparks are few and they're not sending me off into the stratosphere like the old days, (not even close).
Something is up tho with Phil and Bobby... or just with Phil not being happy about how the band is playing. A couple of times this tour he's stopped in mid-jam and thrown up his hands when it seemed the band just didn't go where he wanted ...
I am expecting:
Chinacat
IKYR
St Stephen
11
OMSN
Bertha
El Paso
Throwin Stones
NFA
New Speedway
He's Gone
Watchtower
HSF, Eyes and Shakedown will be saved for NJ...
Just my .02
They will complete 'Star tonight, and with both verses.
They will pull out all stops and take no prisoners as they perform brain surgery with a rusty scalpel on your tender heads.
Certainly:
Stephen
Other One
Eleven
NFA encore
Look for Phil and drummers leading them through a bunch of old school psychedelia with a bit of Bobby cheese through in.
Enjoy The Show!!
XXXOOO
dsg
I agree totally. What's with all the complaining? To be in the room with them all together is a blessing!
Really looking forward to tonights show. Its been way too long. I would have thought that they would have pulled Branford out for the Garden. Don't have the cashola for the NJ shows.
Think there will be a shakedown sceen tonight?
Hoping for a St. Stephen myself and a Shakedown opener and hope not for a One More Saturday night and if so a double encore!
What time are they hitting the stage?
Enjoy the day all - its awesome out right now!!!
It seems the 4th song has been the blues slot, and usually one that used to be in second set. IE g.m. schoolgirl, he's gone, death etc, so what song do you think will there tonight. Ship of fools, another he's gone, another high time?
heres the deal people....like others have said...buuuttt...
im betting on a bird song, watchtower, tomorrow never knows, dark star vs2, the other one would be incredible, possible here comes sunshine opener, one more saturday night closer, and nfa encore.....estimated would be genius....black throated wind bobby!
cant wait....wheres all the spinners gonna be?

>>haters<<
This has to trump every other stupid-ass term on the internet. Yeah, we listen to these guys on a daily basis, collect recordings, spend hundreds of dollars (and a good portion of, if not all, our vacation time) trotting around the country, check forums and trackers for conversations about every little detail, sitting home on weekend nights listening to online broadcasts, face the confusion and wrath of our family and friends, border on clinical addiction...and we HATE because we are critical and discerning?
Pull your heads out.
One thing I've always found uncomfortable about "hippies" is their love affair with IMBALANCE and lack of ability to WANT to be discerning; their jejune definition of "negativity" is anti-productive. People don't learn and grow without things like CRITICISM, and if you've ever read about this band, you know they were critical of each other and themselves. This Flowerland idea that they "just are" and that they somehow occurred from spontaneous combustion couldn't be further from the truth. HARD WORK and BRUTAL honestly is at the very foundation of this band.
Lets go Rangers! Lets go Rangers! Oh wait, thats tommorrow...Here we go Phil, here we go! Have fun tonight everyone lucky enough to be in the "worlds most famous Arena". Maybe a rockin St. Stephen after space like the fall 83' show, now that was fun.
No, No, No, Go Caps. Rock the Red!

we want it OUR WAY lolerz
David's observation aside..... I bet the folks who are hearing Uncle John's for the first time tonight in NYC don't care that it's been played twice before. Practice makes perfect ;-) It's only important to the armchair deadheads keeping stats ;-) Years back, we had no idea walking into the show what they had played the previous night or the previous week for that matter.
We'll never have THIS Uncle John's Band on 4.25.09 ever again!
I think this will be #3 on the purchase list for me.
looking around the room for remaining brain cells now......
Is the second set going to play on gdradio????
Unbroken Chain
Never got a Duprees Diamond News in the parking lot Chametzoo?? lol
Chametzoo. I was saying anything wrong just saying. I'm an old stat head what can I said. And yes years and years ago when I first started going to shows you find out what they played the night before, either in the lot or there was a 900# you could call and find out.
And there have been alot of converstions on these reviews about repeats so I was just adding to those.
But I didn't mean to upset you.

I wanna hear set 2 NOW!!!
I still have mine DDNs. I always refused to look because I like surprises :-)
I remember having to call the 415- number to get setlists and tourdates and all that before I got to rec.music.gdead in 1991
<<..what's the deal with the delayed streams>>
Ah, you can tell who doesn't remember life before the internet. Getting to listen to the show and hour after they play it is FINE with ME.
it's all good dave, for all the jackasses comparing these guys to U2, REM, and whatnot, the fact that was the first three-peat is simply astounding.
NO ONE else is doing anything like this, not even in the same universe, NO ONE.
btw the cassidy was sweet, a bit rocky on the ending jam, they just need more practice LOL

Michael McMorrow: Oh yeah, I remember DDNews... but that wasn't until the mid 80's, no?
What's the encore here?
Tom Thumbs Blues maybe come on...
Just tapped into the gdradio.net stream a little while ago, and I'm really likin' what I'm hearing. That Cat>>Shakedown ("CatDown"? "CatShake?") was excellent, and the audience responsiveness through the whole show is amazing.....it's bringin' lotsa smiles to my face knowing lots of my friends are there getting blasted first-hand. I'm with Andoo---that faster funkier Ship o' Fools is fab. And the Sugaree is primo. This gig is vastly exceeding all expectations, which were admittedly pretty low after all the "meh" reviews a lotta Zoners posted after previous gigs. Seems like someone told Bobby, "Look dude, this is NYC. Don't fuck up" and he came through the way we know he can. Amen to that.
I'm suddenly very psyched for Phila next weekend!
Mid 80s sounds about right for DDNs... I started seeing shows in 79.

that show looks weak on paper....bunk
BRAVO!! F#@kin'....BRAVO!!! Yeah you right NYC!!
Burphly, shows looks pretty sick to me on paper, and is sounding sick on 365...bunk sounds like some SPS lingo to me...
I am simply wondering why Burphly would increase our carbon foot print by using paper when you can see the list right here? IMHO, I believe it appears strong to very strong but I am not familiar with Burphly's history/experience that contributed to his assessment...
Where's that 2nd Set stream at??
(Yes, the internet has spoiled us bad....but in the cosmic, karmic balance of things, I figure that near-instantaneous access to the audio is fair compensation for living in the age of $100++ ticket prices! Nowumsayn?
They should really just be broadcasting live audio/video of the entire tour. I would have paid $15 a show for that!
So what if the entire Internet ground to a crawl for like 6 weeks every night while umpteen bazillion deadheads got their fix each night
Alright Susan, let's call Barack Obama about this.....I'm sure HE could convince the Dead to give us simultaneous aud/vid. And If they have to build more bandwith & internet infrastructure, so be it! Consider it "shovel-ready high-tech stimulus" and get on with it.
Yeah, $15 seems fair. I'd pay that.

9:40 p.m. on the west coast and all is well Thanks to TaperRob and GDRadio. I am at the edge of my seat for this one.
Thanks to TaperRob and Friends!!! I signed up just to say that. And add that the Space/Cryptical was pretty cool! It sounded like they were one!!
just got back - excellent show
unreal.
Just back from the show. Above all else, the band is totally unpredictable at the moment, and you never know where they are going. Here is what we got:
Cosmic Charlie-sounded like they were headed toward Truckin', not enthrallling, interesting choice for opener, looked like they were having lots of fun. China Cat, very nicely turned out, and they repeatedly reminded us of what we already knew, which was that they were going into I Know You Rider, only they didn't, and banged out the Shakedown chord to everyone's recognition, surprise and delight. Warren's Ship, nothing special, He's Gone with a new vocal improv at the end, went a bit long. Surprisingly beautiful Cassidy, Bob's performance on it stellar vocally and instrumentally. Note: keyboards too low much of the first set. Sugaree nice, but they got a little lost in the jamming.
Second set opens with Drums, and some weird keys, and then Phil's crazy vocal arrangement on Cryptical, which must be heard to be understood. Into, bang, Other One, and the show cooks relentlesssly from there. Born Cross Eyed, and then floating around until St. Stephen chords hit, and the roof blows off. And then before it is over, they are spinning off into The Eleven, and then they are back to St. Stephen, and it is finished and back to The Eleven for real. And more floating, and then it sounds like The Wheel is there, except it's not, it is instead a slowed down tempo UJB, an arrangement different from anything I have heard before, and fine as they come, audience singing along with love pouring over the place. Before breath is caught, Unbroken, and as it winds out into a further jam, Purple Haze riffs from Warren, and then is it Watchtower? No, Gimmie Shelter (Bob's first?) with feeling and exhuberance, and then One More Sat Night, but also done with feeling and not out of routine. Lovely Brokedown encore, and lights come on too soon.
Great band, guy in the parking lot insisting that while he knows it is heresy, show is better than some Jerry shows he has seen. Certainly exciting, band challenging itself at every turn, lots of risks, many pay off.
"St. Stephen chords hit, and the roof blows off."
Hey didn't I call that in a post above???? LOL

the roof JUST blew off Madison Square Garden
I'm a bit too tired to do a complete review but needless to say, this show blew away everything else ive heard from the boys during this tour.
the first set in my head played out more like a second set - very nice jamming with minimal meandering. the cassidy was extremely jammed out to the point where i forgot what song they were playing. who can complain about a midset shakedown?
phils vocal rearrangement of cryptical while they were doing space was unfreakin believably good and the other one that followed was great. there were some real miscues in second set, like how they completely botched the end of st stephen, and the drummers falling behind at the beginning of the eleven, but it was an overall great set and the place was going bonkers for shelter and omsn. i couldnt decide if it was a purple haze or foxy lady jam during the eleven but it was unexpected and cool.
msg was so jubilant after brokedown palace that the boys came out in front of the stage and did a bow.
this was a really damn good show.
just back...MONSTER SHOW AT THE GARDEN...great sound where I was...one big crazy dance party...much more flow than last night...yes, the pink guitar was frequently played...chimenti really took sugaree over the top with his solo; all band members heads turned and eyes locked on him during this, a really great moment...yes, there were some rough spots but overall a really great show...
I forgot something funny...I have no memory of china cat being played at all and I was about 25 feet from the stage at that point...no drinks, no nothing...it was a surprise to me to see it on the list...go figure!
anyone buy the official MSG t shirt and have any idea what the 400 on the shirt means???
Just got in. My first show of 5. Thought it was terrific. Great for dancing throughout. Great sound on the floor. Crowd was pretty tuned in and very active. Don't remember everything perfectly.
Cosmic Charlie was very well performed. So cool and unexpected as an opener. China Cat Sunflower was lots of fun.
BTW, I didn't have any problems with anything I heard from Bobby this show. Wasn't wanking a lot with his instruments Did a great job the whole night as far as I'm concerned. Jam could very well have become Rider, but glad it became a smokin'Shakedown Street instead. Lots of fun. Crowd super in to it. I really liked it in this position. Crowd was all warmed up for it.
Ship of Fools was pretty fast. He's Gone was great. A couple tiny disagreements or minor mistakes all got nicely resolved. Cassidy was strong though not perfect. Sugaree was a monster for the most part. Chimenti really jammed and jammed on it and made some terrific energy happen. Something happened and the entry didn't carry cleanly into the last verse. Not the end of the world.
Set II:
Drumz >space> to open was inspired. Very nice. Very cool. Yes, the Cryptical Envelopment (with Phil Vocals) was a unique an interesting new presentation. It sounded like Phil's vocals were "within" the music. Word fail. The Other One was good. Not perfect, but had lots of great moments.
Born Cross-Eyed > Good
Jam > Don't remember
St. Stephen > Damn good
The Eleven... Good
Uncle John's Band...who can ever complain?
Unbroken Chain > Very nice. Loved it
Gimme Shelter > Scorched earth!. Balls to the wall rock and roll. A primo highlight.
One More Saturday Night Rocked as you would expect.
Encore: Donor Rap
Brokedown Palace Sweet.
I don't know how valuable this was. All in all, I thought this was a great show. I am loving what this band is doing and the way they are doing it. Except for the kill the songs by committee (which was at a minimum tonight), I can only hope this band will keep on doing what it's doing.
Anyone need a crappy Philly ticket? I have one extra per night. 5/1 306A, 5/2 410. Got them from official online on-sale, but my mailorder tickets were better. Will sell for actual cost: $105/ticket (face + all the fees).

listening to the stream... wow...
Warren harmonizing with the crowd during BDP is so cool.. or maybe its becuase you can't really hear Bob and it sounds like that.. haha.. either way very cool gig tonight
just got back. show was a scorcher. Bob nailed Cassidy and Jeff went wild on Sugaree. The buildup to the last verse of St. Stephen was done nicely. Gimme Shelter was a surprise and it rocked the house. Sat night was killer, Bob rock star Wier. UJB was nice, had a sweet ba-da, da-da,da-da,da-da ending. Warren had nice vocals throughout, great voice. Band sounded much tighter than last night @ Nassau. Privileged to have been amongst the 23000 there. Peace & Love
wow. MSfuckingG!
im still glowing.
fuck.
see ya all in LA in two weeks.
Can't wait for the DVD.
Just got back from the show, my first of the tour. As an 18 year old who loves this music so much, this was a really special night for me.. Seeing the four on stage together for the first time. A really awesome experience, so much history.
Cosmic Charlie starts the night, a real nice groove. The sound in here is wonderful.. Everything is blended very nicely. Bobby is really up in the mix which is great. A small jam into China Cat, the place exploded. They played it at the perfect tempo and had an infectious groove. Bobby's lead line was so clear and loud.. very impressive to play that part and sing at the same time. Huge unison chord into Shakedown, this was really awesome Warren's vocals were great. This is when the crowd really started reacting, the energy was high all night Ship of Fools came next and I loved how they played it... up tempo from the original version Warren sang beautifully. This went directly into He's Gone... Amazing! The audience really became a part of the song here singing the last line of each verse in unison. Bob kept to the old phrasing at these points which was great. Thousands of people singing in unison at once is wild, the song faded away with a cool vocal outro. They flew into Cassidy next which was really beautiful. The first Bobby song of the night with an great jam that seemed like it was shooting away into another song but flew right back into the last section of Cassidy... After listening to the first few shows of the tour it seems now they are acting as a group mind more knowing when a jam has reached its peak or needs to go someone else. Sugaree was beautiful. Listening to the whole garden sing "Shake it, Shake it, Sugaree" together with the band was awesome. Jeff took a solo on the acoustic piano and this was truly amazing, the band built and built and Jeff was feeling it! Everyone exploded after this. End of first set.
Second set opened up with sounds of the jungle and rhythm devils kicked in. Bill and Mickey really seem to be having so much fun playing together and there playing has been amazing. They started to go into Space and I started to hear chants which I thought was some of Mickey's sample work but soon realized it was Phil! He sang Crpytical Envelopment in space! This was very musical, a really cool thing. Naturally, a jam went into The Other One and Phil's bass was heavy in the mix, this was great. Next came New Potato Caboose, this block of Anthem of the Sun was really good, good music. A jam into St. Stephen, the garden exploded here also they really nailed this. The middle section was awesome with Phil taking the vocals. The jam into the Eleven was great, right before going into the song there was a moment of unsureness however they got right back on it showing how they really have progressed playing together. Uncle John's Band begins. The harmonies on this were really great. Unbroken Chain intro starts, I was psyched to hear this. This is such an intense song musically. Warren started up Gimme Shelter, his vocals on this were great! He really has an amazing voice. The whole Garden was once again full of energy which was brought up another level during One More Saturday Night, the whole place which by the way seemed to have zero empty seats including behind the stage was dancing or movin in some way or another. Brokedown Palace was the perfect way to end the night, The whole crowd once again singing in almost perfect unison this time.. it was really wild how great it sounded.
After the band took their bow you could tell how psyched Mickey was, waving his arms to every part of the Garden.
also to note, I recommend buying a wrist band before the show and picking up the recording after, well worth the 25 dollars. They quality of sound is amazing, I'd say they are maybe a little more clear then the recordings available on dead.net
Hey Lord Henry..an 18yo writing review here..
Memories
Thanks Vincent P...and other Reviewers
Makes me maybe want to go to LA Forum..the Westcoast MSG
I'm definitely not giving a full review at this time of night or in my slightly still enebriated condition.
I did want to say that out of the four shows that I have been to this tour tonight was pretty sweet, tighter playing all around. A little undervolumed is my only complaint. my first favorite set is still worcester, saturday night, 1st set.. some of the magic was out.
1st favorite overall show was Nassau last night, the band was tight and rocked pretty damn good.
all in all they sound like they are getting better as we go on.
unfreakingbelievable!!!
i havent been to the other shows this tour, but most every show had plenty of negative or neutral feedback.....last nights show freakin rocked!!! as you can tell, not one person really has bashed the set who was there....thats cause the boys were on fire.....some really magical moments....every song felt like a welcomed beast captivating and inspiring.....cant wait for jersey!!!
Vincent, thanks for the review. I have a son older than you.
We 'older' heads are thrilled that the music will live on because the torch has been passed.
I mean, Phil is 4 years older than my mother.
None of us get to live for Eternity on this earth. But knowing the music will outlive us all is the most important thing and I do believe that the DEAD would think that too.
Grateful Dead. What a prophetic name!
This was one the very best shows I have seen EVER.
Anything left for tonight?... Warren show?
I'm happy for all of you were there, though sad that I missed some of my favorite dance tunes
Lucky shits.
I just got done listening to this on live365.
Can't wait till it's up on archive.org
Unbelievable. I can't find the words.
2009 and the Dead can do this.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart and the tips of my ears. I am not exaggerating when I say listening to this music now, at this time of my life, brings tears to my eyes
What a night...the boys did not disappoint. In fact, I will say they DELIVERED! Cosmic Charlie was a bit uneven and then everything else was just ON. 1st set gets an A++ Enjoyed the 2nd set opener of Drums>Space and dug the "science fiction" version of Cryptical. A thundering O1! Things began to get strange during Born Cross Eyed (it's a tough song to play regardless); but the wheels came completely off during the St. Stephen>11>UJB. I cannot ever recall hearing UJB sung as slowly as it was last night (save for the final reprise which got the crowd fully into it) I will say this; as good as Warren is for many of the songs, this is one song that he just cannot play properly. The lead guitar parts in the beginning were totally MIA. Unbroken Chain started out a bit "thin" sounding to my ears but worked itself out nicely and the Warren must have turned it up to 11 when he started Gimme Shelter. Hands down the best version I've seen of any of Phil's bands.
OMSN was to be expected and while Brokedown was nice to hear, I can do with out the William Shatner version that I heard last night: Sometimes just play the songs the way they are meant to be played and don't get cute with the arrangement! 2nd Set gets a B-.
Overall the boys brought their A game to MSG and kicked my ass
Did anyone see the young girls (3 or 4) dancing with a few older females behind Jeff and inside the black onstage partitions? I was wondering if a couple were Bobby's daughters? They were cute as hell, dancing hand in hand, twirling...
Yo Myles! Had my eye out for you.
I was on Phil's side watching side stage and saw the kid's dancing. There was a whole scene going on behind the drumz as well. Very enjoyable show. UJB sounded good to me.
How many people got snagged in the DWI check going into the Lincoln Tunnel after the show? Added 45m to my trip home with complete field test. Gimme Shelter is right!
My last Dead show at The Garden was 9/22/93, the last of a great 6 show run. Last night, The Dead walked into the lion's den, and took me back to that place. The vibe was incredible, and the band delivered in a big way. It really hit me as to why I go, because - they play without a net. They climbed up to the high wire, grabbed the trapeze, and played like nothing else mattered. Lost thier balance once or twice, but never fell. New York can be a tough crowd, but the feedback between the band and the audience last night was something I haven't experienced in quite some time. EVERYONE was on the same plane. No, they can't turn on a dime anymore, but they can turn on a quarter!
Highlites for me were Phil's bass during Cassidy, the China/Shakedown, Warren's guitar liftoff during Sugaree, Phil's eerie vocals on Cryptical, the Cross Eyed/St. Stephen and a beautiful heartfelt Uncle John's. The first chords of Gimme Shelter took me right back to Phil's last show of the Nokia run, on 11/18/08. Rock f'in solid - Mickey POUNDING the drums like a madman.
The non-stop roar of the crowd after they left the stage, and I mean deafening roar. Phil attempting to quite everyone down for the donor rap, and me and my buddy agreed there was only one possible closer - Brokedown, and they pulled it out of the hat.
An incredible display of devotion, determination, and triumph. Will this show sit in my top ten of all time? Maybe, maybe not, time will tell. All I know is right now there are no words anyone could possibly write anywhere on this page that could even begin to remove the ear-to-ear grin I'm wearing right now.
Peace to to my friends David, Dylan, Geoff, Jill, Keith (Fitzman), and of course The Boys in the Band.
How about the Jimi Hendrix teases....either Purple Haze or Foxy Lady in St. Stephen (and possibly reprised somewhere either in or after Gimme Shelter?)
That end of set 1 Sugaree seams particularly sweeeet! Tasty, with soul.
.... gotto stop listening and jump in to mommy mode, until tonight!
Yes, it was there, the Foxy Lady tease, Warren showing his Gov't Mule side.
I don't know if anyone else noticed (everyone has different reviews obviously) but it was a different band between set 1 and set 2. It's like someone got the memo after the lackluster Set 1.
Pretty decent set list during Set 1 but it was sloppy, choppy and way to angular. Also the levels were all fucked up. Bobbys guitar should never be louder than Warrens. That aside it felt like Warren wasn't really positioned to step free to do his thing. It felt like he was being held back by Bobbys weird MD thing. The solos during Cassidy and Sugaree never really took off - I was frustrated.
But then Set 2 seemed like a result of them talking backstage during set break "um..this is MSG. let's nail this set." The St Stephen was really fluid and jamming, Born Cross Eyed was tight, Unbroken Chain has a NASTY warren solo during the jam - doing EXACTLY what he's good at and Gimmie Shelter brought the house down.
I'm looking forward to more shows on the tour but the moral is that Bobby needs to chill out and let the music breathe. Don't do the overly arranged Ratdog stuff....let the Dead music be loose and free, let Warren do his thing, let Phil and the drummers find their groove. If anything will make this tour go wrong - it's Bobby. But again, seemed he got the memo just in time for the 2nd set.
anyone buy the official MSG t shirt and have any idea what the 400 on the shirt means???
I believe it has to do with Henry Hudson navigating the Hudson river 400 years ago. I am not positive though..
i thought the 1st set was better, more fun and much less boring, it sort of felt like a 2nd set at times...i was really looking forward to the 2nd set, but i was pretty much bored the entire time.
I thought cryptical was terrible, the spoken thing i didnt like, was psyched for the other one but thought it to be boring, not very powerful, i just found myself standing around...born cross eyed was cool, enjoyed that, bob did really well on the vocals, got me dancing again and optimistic from there on out-
st. stephen was well received, i was hoping for that tune all day and i could smell it toward the end of BCE so i was getting pretty excited; i thought it was just OK, nothing special, got me dancing for a little, they seemed a little lost, oh well-the 11 was horrible, extremely slow-pretty much from then on i was waiting for the show to end-gimme shelter was good, they seemed really energized to play that song, warren especially, more so then the grateful dead songs, lame...UBC is one of my favorite songs and thought it was weak, UJB was awful...
overall it was what i expected, which was not much at all-i love phil, but this band just isnt that good, at all-i love the music and will see 1, maybe 2 of the philly shows since it's where i live, and i know they will be fun, like last night but i wish they would pick up the damn pace, make me dance hard!
the "transitions" were nonexistent and they would just come to like a stop or crawl when done with a song, weird. Obviously this is just my opinion as it seems people really enjoyed the show last night, I hope they play much better in Philly, we'll see...
Listening to the stream. The crowd is jacked!
Lots of emotion in the vocals esp. Warren on Sugaree & Phil in the middle break down of St. Stephen. They sound pretty comfortable to let it go where it wants.
Seems like a perfect show. More "song oriented" songs in the first set. Deeper, spacier, trippier, introspective, songs in the second.
Chimenti really brings a lot to the table.
Classic set! Shakedown was the newest tune!
Hands down the BEST show so far!! Glad to see that Bobby didnt "hack it up" with that odd vocal timing and phrasing. (at least for the most part)I liked the 1st set better, seemed a bit more lively, not that the 2nd set was bad, i just liked the 1st set a little more. The only thing that i didnt like was Phil singing Cryptical the way he did. I didnt even know what song it was at first. "Personally" I thought it was terrible. But like I said, aside from that, it was the best show by far. My Opinion
>> Glad to see that Bobby didnt "hack it up"
I personally thought the Brokedown was crappy. First time Ive heard that song played and got no deep emotions.
Well..Like I said..for the most part..Bobby overall had, what I beleive, was possibly his best night on this current tour. The only thing that I personally thought was train wreck material was Phil hackin up Cryptical...Please Phil, dont ever sing Cryptical like that again ;-[
It was way better than I expected. Weir is playing (if not quite singing) the songs the way they were written and he is clear in the mix. Warren is doing a great job of blending in rather than being a virtuoso soloist. At least last night, there did seem to be more of a collaboration/conversation than for a long time. If they toured 3 times a year for a few years, they might even get back that telepathic tightness...
one of my fav post jer shows, never have see tne garden rock like that, my bud and i have seen many there, it was such high energy... people in the isles, standing on seats, singing along , dancing everywhere....the crowd helping weir when he forgot the words... what a fucking zoo...just a real rock show, warren was so rock and roll and psychedelic...felt like a acid test show = many dosed people, including myself...WOW! and the crowd was so loud and in with the band, really playing of each other...i was jsut so shocked by the crowd, so raowdy....
the music was so experimental, as someone said, they play without a net,a nd sometimes fail, but alst night more often than not, they nailed it....wild night...partied until 5:45 am. ended the night in a hot tub in the new jersey woods watching the sun rise...i cant stop smiling " steal your face right off your head"
All i can say about last nights show is... WOW. Amazing, inspired music.>>>>>>> really was, so much chance taking and power chords, heavy shit...
could even begin to remove the ear-to-ear grin I'm wearing right now.>>>>>>>>> the best part of nights like last night, then melting out to times square is like nothing else on earth...
listening to this music now, at this time of my life, brings tears to my eyes>>>>>>>>>>> i cried early thinking how much fun i had last night, and we jammed to an old dead tape from hartford 84, like old times in our college dorms staying up all night dosed and listening to tapes...
great time...
Just listened to the Cryptical Envelopment>Other One Born Cross-eyed again on the Cd they make at the show which is perfect quality.. that was just awesome, Phil singing Cryptical was the coolest thing.. I'm surprised people weren't psyched on it. I have heard old Grateful Dead recordings of them playing the Other One over space. Really cool.
Buy the recording before the shows people! They are a worthy investment.
Three words about last night: FULL CALIOPE MODE. It was not to be missed. Sure glad to have made the Amtrek from Philly. The garden was lit up like a beacon in the night, a homing device calling the children home to roost. This was a night for the ages, a statement from the boys never to be forgotten. Timeless. Can you answer? YES I CAN!!!!
Hey Vince (Puleo), I grabbed a shirt last night and was wondering the same thing - "What's that 400 mean". It's got a pirate on the front in a boat, so you're explanation is better than any I've been able to come up with. I'll stick to the Henry Hudson story.
Cya at the next show,
Steve
I've seen hundreds of GD and offshoot shows over the 30 years and this MSG show was grade A.
The almost entire Jerry song first set was terrific... Cosmic Charlie was a bit off, but as a rarity, more than welcome.
A Shakedown at the Garden is almost mandatory and dang... Ship-He's Gone-Cassidy-Sugaree... Paeons to our last brothers (Jerry, Neil Cassidy, etc). Was almost expecting a China Doll or Black Peter, but the muissuc and I both felt that would be a little too over the top.
Second set was a mind melter, Unbroken Chain was as painful vocally as always, but the Gimme Shelter (which they had also soundchecked with) was incredible.
The Brokdedown Palace reminded me of the last time I saw the Jerry-Dead- '95 Giants Stadium.
Shows as awesome as last nite, the inventiveness, energy and spirit; are unfortunately a reminder of how far Jerry dragged the band down in the 90's...
Can't wait till Izod!

>>>The only thing that I personally thought was train wreck material was Phil hackin up Cryptical.
I thought it was original and way cool. It had a What's Become of the Baby vibe.
just listened to the Cryptical...LOVED IT! Very dark, scary, psychedelic and WEIRd. Cant wait to hear the rest of the show
yes the Cryptical was so sick! musically awesome... the whole Anthem of the Sun Block was just amazing for me. I heard that the last time they played Born Cross-eyed was 1969.
Actually Born Cross Eyed has been in the post GD rotation since the reunion shows in 2002 I believe.
the whole show rocked
Whats Become of the Baby vibe? Sung by Theresa (Yoko Ono Williams)? WOW!! now thats a REAL train wreck!
Actually Born Cross Eyed has been in the post GD rotation since the reunion shows in 2002 I believe.
Ah, I heard this on the Grateful Dead station on serious, I guess they meant the last time the Grateful Dead played it. Awesome, either way.
"New York Sing To Me!!!"
Best "Post Jerry" Show Period
phil singing the cryptical would have been a personal highlight for me. I have always loved his rendition of cryptical since busting it out back in 98 or 99 and his vocals are unmatched.
>>>>>Best "Post Jerry" Show Period
I very may well have to agree here. I'm still chewing on it. In fact - I'm still high from last night.
WOW. Great show.
>>>>>Best "Post Jerry" Show Period<<<<<<<<
>>>I very may well have to agree here. I'm still chewing on it. In fact - I'm still high from last night.<<<
Obviously, you are still high. Good show - Yes; Great Show - Yes; Best "Post Jerry" Show???? Let's not get carried away now.......
Aside from the Alpine re-union and a very few select P+F shows - it's tough to come up with very many that hold a candle to the depth of emotion and the sheer Grateful Deadness of Sat. night's show.
I guess that all Im saying.
Let's DO get carried away - that show carried away everyone who was there. I'd love to be carried away like that a few more times before this is all over. :-)
BTW - I am STILL high - and the chemicals have long worn off - but the buzz from the music still hasn't - so Im gonna have to go w/ the original assessment - I hope they top it w/ Branford in N.J. though.
Also - what everybody is calling the Foxy Lady tease sounded like a Spanish Casstle Magic tease to me - must DL soundboard now.
I hear ya......just busting stones on a Monday morning
It's all cool Keith!!!!!
Two days later and still high~!
We have the band we need!!!!!! Now we need to get them to admit it and book the summer/fall/NYE!!!
Dead Phish is the dream many of us still dream about
>>>Dead Phish is the dream many of us still dream about<<<
Sorry Myles, count me OUT on that one......
"Dead Phish is the dream many of us still dream about"
not me...
Fitzman, drop me an e-mail, try to hook up in Philly.
Light Years Better Than Nassau Show!
Also - what everybody is calling the Foxy Lady tease sounded like a Spanish Casstle Magic tease to me - must DL soundboard now.
I'm pretty sure ti was Foxy Lady.
After listening to the cd bought at the show for a 3rd time I have to say this again, if any of you guys are going to shows in the future and plan on buying the soundboard recordings from dead.net or whatever it may be I highly recommend spending the extra 10 on the cd's they make at the show. They are selling all of them at each show and are noticeably clearer.
Hey Tom!
I lost your e-mail.....mine is in my profile. let me know your plans.......are you going to both?
See you loonies in N.J.?
We do indeed have the band we need again.
And - though Sat. was the topper for me - Nassau was still pretty damn good IMO.

Finally got a chance to listen myself.
So, let me get this straight. Phil Lesh, at age 69, puts together an brand-new, sonically adventurous version of the song, channeling exactly the spirit of adventure that went into the making of Anthem...
That ain't no train wreck; that's a reason to be glad we're alive.
Haven't heard it again yet, but that Cryptical was da bomb!!!
Great show, tons of energy, the boys delivered the goods all weekend.
I give them an "A" for effort.
As far as Cryptical goes...to each is own

Couldn't agree more..
I heard the Cryptical from the SBD...LOVE IT. I love Phil. That is all.
Speaking as someone who was there dead center next to the soundboard on the floor I will say that the cryptical was awesome in its spookyness... It was a total mind fuck and it was amazing... The entire show was amazing... I was down on this band after all of their jams at Nassau the night before seemed to end in a train wreck.. MSG was a different beast all together.. THEY BROUGHT THE HOUSE DOWN... Marvelous!!!
hahaha didn't mean to hit a Phish nerve...
One bandwagon at a time for me!
Myles
A wonderful blissful evening , I have been at shows
since 1969 and this was up their with the best of
their shows ! Jerry must be proud of his pals
So glad to see some enthusiastic commentary here. I know I am only one little man, but for me -- as some others said -- simply the BEST post-Fat Man show of any incantation of these guys... I just listened to the digital SBD of the show and YES it was as good as you thought it was...
We had always heard it said - "There is NOTHING like a Grateful Dead concert," but beyond that -- There is nothing like a Dead concert AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN IN NEW YORK CITY!!!
very well said Rob, many heard & felt the magic in msg. A show for the ages . Blessed to be there we were for sure.
Just one more thing I ask ,
Hope that the DEAD come back to MSG
the sooner the better
NYC MSG DEAD = APEX
he's gone was awesome
