i wish they would play maggies they way they used to as well
seems like a better show than w-b weds nite
Just got home. Show started and ended really strong... but they really lost me (and most of the Coliseum) after Alabama until Knockin. Almost an hour of spacey noodling just got boring after a while. Drumz had some nice moments.
Home from the show too. Really enjoyed it and remained engaged during the Darkstar, jamming, drums portion In fact I thought it was great, Mickey was awesome. Really dug Lost Sailor>Saint, Looks Like Rain, and really the whole second set.
Good times! Looking forward to tomorrow night.
Who sang Knockin'?
Just got back from the show - good times. Highlights for me were a great jackstraw, peggy-o, and GDTRFB. Encore was, eh. Drums is really amazing and should not be used as a piss break. I believe Warren sang Knockin - it was great and very unexpected.
Lot was chill, no issues really. Tents everywhere, balloons everywhere, dollar beers & grilled chesses got me through the afternoon. Crowd was good, nice collection of peeps. MSG tomm....
Just got home.. first of all the parking lot scene was terrific! Nobody bothering anyone, 5 full rows of peaceful vending on shakedown, and more NITROUS then I have ever seen in my life, seriously it was crazy...
Onto the show...
Jackstraw... Very very nice opener, great vocals and spirited playing by everyone GREAT START
BEW... Great to hear, well played, bit sloppy at times especially in the beginning but overall well played until the end where it kind of lost its steam... Now I may have been seeing things but from where I was it looked like Phil was visibly upset at the end of this song, throwing his hands up multiple times and glaring at bobby.. Unfortunately this seemed like an ongoing trend for the evening... More on this later...
Baby Blue.. very sweetly sung and played...
Easy Wind... WOW... at this point it was the song of the set.. Warren tore it up
Death.. powerful heart-wrenching version.. great to hear
then here we go again.. Bobby starts Lost Sailor, everyone looks at him like he has 9 heads... he stops and they play a great don;t ease me in...
Sailor>Saint... awesome way to end a very very good first set... yet I was really not digging the vibe between Bobby and Phil, again maybe this is just me, I WANT TO HEAR WHAT OTHERS THAT WERE THERE THINK....
The acoustic set was beautiful, Phils bass was thumping, Jeff sounded amazing and everything was just beautiful, One of the best LLRAIN I have ever heard...
Second set.. Alabama rocked, seriously rocked, Warren was amazing on this one... then, I hate to say it, but unfortunately the Jam out of Alabama (if you want to call it that) was a TRAIN WRECK.. Phil was again looking angry and nobody except Mickey and Billy found any kind of groove at all... Phil tried to start Dark Star about 5 times before anyone else caught on... They finally pulled it together and sang an amazing first verse of DS with some really powerful harmonies... This was followed by anpother train wreck jam that led to drumz> space.. Mickey was literally beating the shit out the beast wow...Space like every other jam of the second set went nowhere until it finally reached a snoozer of a Knockin...
GDTRFB was possibly the song of the night everyone ewas on fire, but Bobby literally ran off the stage after and didn;t even look at phil... Touch encore.. eh... weak version...
So In summary the first set through alabama was amazing and then it all fell apart...
I was NOT digging the vibe between Bobby and Phil... Going to MSG tomorrow and I hope the made up tonight..
How can Phil keep getting mad at Bobby? Life is too short to not be happy?
How can Phil keep getting mad at Bobby? Life is way too short to be wasting it mad at Bob Weir.
good show and very fun...a few miscues, slow spots, and dead ends, but overall vibe was really nice...here are some poorly written notes:
The Dead
4/24/2009
Nassau Coliseum
Uniondale, NY
Set 1:
Jack Straw - a bit slow, but well-played, vocal mics all could have been higher in the mix
Brown-Eyed Women - nice, with the Weir flub as noted...crowd cheered; enjoyable miscue...mics still low
It's All Over Now Baby Blue - I liked this very much...mics getting better
Easy Wind - warren kicked it up a notch, vocal now nice in the mix, rockin'
Death Don't Have No Mercy - killer, bob started and I thought uh, oh, he sounds fine, but warren better sing also...which he did
Don't Ease Me In - LS miscue prior to this, fast paced and energetic
Lost Sailor >
Saint of Circumstance - oh yeah...niiice
I could see the crew setting up the acoustic instruments, so I knew this was coming...what I didn't expect, because I''m not sure it's been mentioned, was the Billy played on a small kit and Mickey had a similar small percussion set-up, both out in front of the main drums and close to Phil and Bob...
Set 2:
Masterpiece @ - really nice, good crowd reaction @ "coliseum" line
Peggy O @ - phil on vocals, again, really nice, phil's bass round and warm throughout the set
Looks Like Rain @ - BIG crowd reaction, good Bobby vocal antics, superb acoustic jam and intensity at the end, nicely stretched out, really nice to hear this one again
Set 3:
Alabama getaway> similar to don't ease, energetic
Dark Star v1> crazy bass lines from phil led into this, kind of jazzy riffs to tease, almost sounded like bird song, could have easily gone off elsewhere but materialized into dark star, jams got a little clunky at times but overall good
drums> AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
space> super weirdness from Bob to start it off, strange voices, then lost track a bit (space, not bob) when the full band entered, some very MIDI sounding passages, darkish and out there, not for the uninitiated...my sister, who has seen and enjoyed many good phil shows, texted me at this point and wrote "I like pl better" and then sent a second text that asked "is this trippy style normal? don't like"...ha ha!
knocking on heavens door - really nice spacey version, with a reggae lilt towards the end...I thought this was great, but might have fared better in a different spot in the show...bob dispensed with the "mama, take this badge off of me" and instead sang "come take this badge off of me", which was kind of strange...warren very strong on the vocals
GDTRFB - entire place up and jamming, including the tapers...caught a glimpse of a person ion a full red dancing bear suit on the floor who must have been ROASTING to death...tons of energy from the band and the crowd
Encore:
donor rap - phil in good spirits, glad to be back at nassau
touch - nice, well played and better than NYC...similar vibe from band and crowd
crowd happy and band happy at conclusion
random notes...drums low in the mix first set, but much better second...chimenti sounded GREAT all night on the baby grand...bob fairly energetic and with it...phil laid down some insane bass lines at times...huge bathroom lines...smoke 'em if ya got 'em (zero enforcement)...big dylan night...generally agree with jason as our comments reveal, but not so much on any bad vibes between bob and phil...bob is bob, and I think maybe phil was just as much at fault for those train wrecks as anyone else...interesting to note though that during one of those jams, phil was laying down rapid fire bass notes and hopping up and down like a kid in a candy factory...so I think maybe sometimes even when the jams end up as trainwrecks, the guys are having fun getting out there...the perspective from the audience is sure to differ from that on stage....
I parked the vanagon next to my friend's cream 70s westie on the north side of the marriot...nice scene over there and very little if any of the "dark side" of the lot...killer sound system in the westie provided pre-show vibes for about a 50 yard radius...post-concert wrap-up more of the same...
however, my sister was on the other side of the coliseum and said she never saw anything like the nitrous scene that was going down...she had to laugh because she had been concerned about not having a cup for her beer...total free-for-all ballon scene...we encountered this exiting the arena and I'm glad I wasn't anywhere near it before the show...just awful...never even saw shakedown...easy exit and no hassles for hanging in the lot
btw, still looking for an MSG...thanks
Hell Phil and Bob been at each other since at least 1968 when Phil and Jerry kicked Bobby out of the band.
but hey it's just Bob being Bobby.
keep practicing boys. I'm with ya!
dubstar- great review, thanks!
does anyone have an up-to-date count of how many non-repeats vs. repeats? i remember them saying they practiced ~180+, but i stopped keeping track after worcester.

I can't believe I was there. The show was phenomenal.
1st set and acoustic set were good. From Alabama thorugh the end of the show was COMPLETE GARBAGE! The Roseland set was better - WORST GD related show I've ever endured....Steal Your Wallet Tour 2009!
After acoustic wasn't garbage...it wasn't great, though. Had it's moments...poor song selection...lost it's momentum after the acoustic. But not garbage and certainly better played than Roseland.
Great first set!!!! Loved the vibe...even Nassau lot was cool!!! Space in second set lost it's edge but overall a GREAT time!!!!!!!
Can't wait to do it up again tonight!!!!!!
Had a blast back in Lawng Island last night!
Personal highlights:
Jack Straw (jam before final verse)
Easy Wind
Sailor->Saint
Dark Star (1st jam before the driving charge into Drums)
Knocking (reggae Bobby)
While there were obvious flubs, there were always flubs. I thought Bob Weir was at the top of his game. He sounded great. Dark Star started slowly, but quickly began to sizzle in moments. Solid show. Solid B. Thanks fellas. See you tonight at The Garden!
Look folks, speaking as one who's been going to shows for over 35 years.....
(a) I'm happy they're together and playing, (b) they're still my favorite guys to listen to playing my favorite kind of music, but, (c) given what we all know they have been able to do in the past, their performances on this tour have lacked any consistent fire. Sure, some individual songs have been great fun, (Easy Wind, Death, etc.), but overall none of the instrumental breaks or extended jams have made me see any stars like the old days, not even close.
So, I guess I'm just trying to enjoy the fact that these guys are still playing the music I love, that no one else can really play quite the way that they do, even if they aren't blowin' my mind...
Bill and Micky have been hot though!
Nassau reminded me how much I hate the acoustics and sound in these arenas, and I hope MSG sounds better tonight.
This is the VERY BEST phil & Friends line up and the VERY BEST Ratdog line up and this My friends is the VERY BEST band in the land!!!!
Are they perfect -- NO
Do they screw up -- YES
We are the luckiest people in the world to have the privelege to be there again tonight -- ABSOLUTELY!!!!!
I can't wait for MSG!!!!!! Shakedown baby!!!!!
I love you all even..... the haters!!!
Wake up to find out that YOU are the eyes of the world!!
Myles
Criticism doesn't mean hate.
I'll have some of what myles is having, please.
"This is the VERY BEST phil & Friends line up"
Sorry, you can romanticize all you want, but this doesn't touch the Q. Not even close.
shakedown, preconcert scene
more shakedown
more
Probably one my best picuture....ever? Haha
here ya go....more from yesterday's 75 degree afternoon
last one.
Off to The Gardennnn
last one...really...
Good Morning ya'll,
Once again another memorable night of music.
The Shakedown scene was in it's full blown glory and good vibes all around.
The Jack Straw, was played slower but the band really extended it and the end jam was very nice. I was sitting in 110 and the sound was good but for the first set Phil was not loud enough. First show out of four I can say that about.
They started BE Women at the faster tempo yeah! Although Phil wanted to slow it down so that was kinda of weird. They really extending the jam bewteen the verses and it was great.
Baby Blue was very good, alittle spoken word by Bob but I will forgive him for pulling this jewel out.
Easy Wind
"I've been balling a shiny black steel jack-hammer
Been chipping up rocks for the great highway"
Once gain Warren scores!!
I bolted to the bathroom during Death Don't it sounded good in the halls. Sorry my bad I forgot to take my Flomax.
Made it back for Don't Ease and decided to go to the back of the floor, which was open and no problem to get on.
I have heard the sound is not strong on the floor and this was the case, but I wanted to stay since it was my first time on the floor this tour. Vibes and dancin' were fun too.
Lost Sailor was amazing and the audience loved it. Driftin' and Dreamin'
Saint took off, this must be the place , and it was a blast the band really soared and Bobby did all that fun vocal stuff at the end too.
"Sure don't know what I am looking for" everyone was howling. Right on!
They need to play this in the second set some night
Break time was the usual salmons swimming upstream but everyone was stoked, a much better first set than Wilkes- Barre.
Lucky us that we got the short mini accoustic set, it was maybe the highlight of the night.
More Dylan and Bobby was on. It was perfect.
Peggy-O was beautiful and Phil did an amazing job. The entire band sounded so tight during this mini set.We were in Heaven.
LL Rain was sublime, we had been waiting for Bobby to sing to us our favorite love song and he and the band did not disappoint. It built to an sweet emotionally peak and Bobby, tastefully, brought it to a soaring close.
If they play this electric it will be incredible!
It was like 10-15 minutes before they came back and you started having this oh oh something big is coming our way...
D'oh Alabama! They began to rage on it but the band started to sound a little disjointed, after such an amazing acoustic set???, and they pushed through and ended it strongly.
Then jumping right into a thick instrumental session.
It was clear very soon that Phil wanted to pull out the DS. I did not sense Phil was frustrated with the band and Bobby and Warren really stated to enguage each other.
Then they started to sync up again and it went very deep, I think this was much better than Roseland, and as noted above the jam after the first verse was really good.It must have been close to 30+ minutes.
Then into drumz and I beleive the first repeat by Bill and Mickey. What they played tonight must have to be a song/ piece because it was the exact same thing they played in Wilkes-Barre, which I loved. It pushed things to an even deeper realm tonight.
Then a even longer space than Wednesday and it was like wow are we gettin the Dew or Wharf Rat? Then a total surprise, Knockin on Heaven's Door. This was really breathtaking and they reworked it so that it bloosmed in this post space roll. The entire band was perfect and Bobby was inspring.Warren played with a passion that was very appropiate. The raggae feel was nice at the end. I want to hear this one again soon.
I was surprised that they busted into GDTRFB, they are not ended the set yet? But they were. This version had the energy almost out of control ,and the band at times too, but the response from the audience and the ending was INTENSE!
Jeff really played it out!
What a way to begin a huge three night run.
Touch was very good a total sing along. The lights were the best all night on this one too.
Three Dylan tunes too
Happy Trails
good lovin last night would have been better than dark star just ot keep warren and the young people at bay . sometimes the chance to observe dead space becomes highly desirable.perhaps tonight the energy saved in dark star appears again in concentrate. If the band has to put the save light on to keep the higher consciousness thing going i understand.this was a new york trib to the dylan thing and perhaps to the rift that will grow again bewtween the bobby layed bach people and the phil bring it people. knockin afeter dark star is a good jazzed up interlude for the current round it seems that one man gathers where another xxx spillsover into the mystic
Second set from last night is playing on http://www.gdradio.net right now. Knockin just started.
I'm pretty sure I heard a good lovin' tease...
It is amazing how things have changed. I used to go with friends and have a fun time at dead shows. However, last night, I felt like I was a parent watching his kids perform. As they started each sing, I kept hoping that there will not be any flubs, etc.
Anyway, I also noticed that Bob seemed to start Lost Sailor then stopped. I als thought he did that with LLR. he started the first verse, stopped, then stared again? Also, at the end of the show, when they all took a bow, I could have sworn that when Bil & Mickey came around to the front, they stopped at the piano and started to jokingly clean the top. Did anyone else notice that or do I need new glasses?
You are absolutely right on that one. I forgot to mention that I did hear a lovelight in that ending DS jam too
Billy definitely wiped down the piano, but I don't know if it was done jokingly, to me it looked like he was really wiping it down...maybe like shining up a classic car, because chimenti sounded really good? who knows...
Thank you Warren ...stellar performance
My Mrs says the Drums were her favorite part (I liked em too) but that's pretty weird
Loved DS, LS-Saint,Peggy O; Warren's Singing; Bobby's long pants (bout time he got dressed)
Jeff Holy Cow Chimenti
Not my favorite set list. 3 slowish Dylan/Bobby tunes!? well played but snore...
Speaking of Bobby-he seemed front and center physically and sonically. His guitar playin was a revelation as was his interplay with Jeff. Given that seemed to be the most happening aspect of the show (IMHO) seems natural that it dominated the sound. I'm listening to that guy since 1970 and I aint never heard him so loud in the mix or so assertive in the jams-it was pretty kool-definetly elevates the status of rythym guitar players everywhere!
The uninformed space traveler might think it was the Bob Weir Band but it sure had its moments.
