another grate show...loved the live stream with video, fed it into the tv/stereo and rocked out in the living room...many thanks to all for making it happen!
What a show! How about Bobby singing his heart out on Sugeree. Tonights show was the best Weir has sounded vocally for awhile. There was no spoken word stuff. Warrens playing is climbing to new heights will Phil and Bobby pushing him on. And Jeff's playing tonight and most nights was top notch. Jeffs solo in Sugeree was smokin. This bands energy seems to rise and get stronger with each new outing and they seem to continue to Top there previous set.
damn, the video feed must have been better than being there. I thought they were kind of lethargic, and Warren especially was rather tepid. every time he had a chance to step up and throw down, he backed off, like at the end of John's or Sugar Mag, and I kept waiting for them to segue into another song during Bird Song, which was going nowhere. it was hard to hear Jeff sometimes.
it was definitely nice to finally catch a show, though, rather than reading about them on the zone. more of an exploratory show for me. hoping for a rocker, like they got in L.A., on Thursday.
fire dancers were a nice touch.
but Stephen is really good as an encore. I was getting tired of it mid-second set, but the encore spot worked well, and the no-hurry-take-your-time Eleven with Jimi Hendrix riffs was nice. The Unbroken/Other One combo worked pretty well, and I kept asking people what song they played between the two, and it took several confirmations before I believed only two songs had been played before drums.
The mellow crowd was pretty dense, top to bottom, and there wasn't an incredible amount of ticket action outside. if you showed them a ticket for tonight, they let you buy $20 lawn tickets (with no service charges) for the Thursday show. the woman in front of us dropped and was carted off by Rock Med, but was conscious. $12 for a Sierra...that's out of control.
they can do better. I give 'em a 6 on the 10 scale. but I have seen NY's Eve shows with fewer encores, I think.
I was there and was very happy with the show. Bobby was at his best tonight. Guitar work was loud, aggressive and intricate. Like the way Bobby and Warren's guitars intertwine ... it's quite the attack. Don't know where the previous poster was sitting but could hear Chimenti clearly all night and Warren was unleashed -- not holding back at all.
Very cool music but got to say this is not the dance band the GD were. They just don't groove in such a way that ya gotta dance. That's a bummer but on the bright side this version of the Dead plays real trippy improvisational music with a virtuoso at every position. Great stuff but good luck dancing to it ...
Looks very solid
hey it was only 8.75 for warm bud light on the east coast...but at least we got the dance version of the Rush Limbaugh Techno Boogie...and hundreds of nitrous tanks hissing away in the lot.
Great show... it met and/or exceeded any expectations I had when i first heard this tour being announced.
One thing I could not help but notice (and I am surprised that I have not seen any mention of this before) is that our dear friend Mr Lesh did not seem all together there. He seemed at times confused as if he was wavering in and out of clear consciousness (or at times perhaps just his ability to connect said consciousness with his body). The rest of the band seemed aware of the situation.
I also could not help but notice that Phil's vocal delivery during the donor rap had a strange quality to it.
I found myself searching for an explanation for what I was whitnessing... such as.. 'perhaps Phil took too much acid' or some such thing. In my heart I think I know the answer. I would not want to start a rumor, but I suspect that we may be witnessing some of the last shows from Mr Lesh. I dearly hope that I am wrong.
If indeed, I am correct, I feel deeply honored to have been at this show (shit.. and to be exposed to his work at all).
I think I speak for us all when I say 'we love you Phil'
that's odd Joshua, I didn't hear anything wrong with Phil..you sure it wasn't just your state of mind??
anyway, I thought the band sounded GREAT, was really happy with the show. no complaints here..okay, maybe that Bird song could have ended sooner, seemed to get repetitive at times, but overall was very powerful. the show flowed and the energy was there. surprised at the quality of the music, much better than I expected. Bobby had a very good night..they all did.
and bonus points for the FIRE DANCERS. they were excellent and make the drums so much more fun! very impressive.
Phil definitely seemed a little off watching the webcast... to me it looked like he was annoyed at Bobby for screwing with the arrangements and not following directions. There were points where he was just playing straight root notes during The Eleven and the look on his face was like "please let this be over." This is certainly not a trend or anything though; back in Albany, Phil was sprightly, dancing around the stage and the fretboard like he was 23 again. So I wouldn't get worried about this being it, at least not based on his performance last night.
Thanks for the show, Westies!
Maybe Phil had an off night, it happens. Didn't sound like it during the 1st set, he was way strong and in charge in the mix. I didn't stay up to listen to the 2nd set so I can't comment there, will have to hear the tapes.
RE: Bobby screwing w/ arrangements PO'ing off Phil, very possible. The Bird Song vocal was tough to listen to. Otherwise fantastic playing, so you got to take the good with the bad.
watching and listening to the feed I thought Phil sounded great though I suspect he was a bit fatigued last night. Chi>Den>LA>MV, 5 shows in seven nights at 67 years young....get some well deserved rest guys, come back strong Thursday and Saturday...no rest for Warren though...ABB tues/wed in Oakland, dead thur, abb fri in portland and on to the Gorge sat, then more abb shows post gorge...I don't know how he does it but I'm glad he does. Thank You Warren Haynes!
" I thought Phil sounded great though I suspect he was a bit fatigued last night. Chi>Den>LA>MV, 5 shows in seven nights at 67 years young...."
Make that 69 years young...
Nice show overall. I was very impressed with Jeff. Bobby had some Shatner moments, but not nearly as many as I would have expected. I can see what people mean by Phil being a bit "off" but I wouldn't call it a "bad" night. He just seemed a little more laid back than I'm used to. Warren was fantastic.
I was a little disappointed not to get Cryptical, but really enjoyed the post curfew St. Stephen>The Eleven. They went into about a minute or two long Allman Bros jam in the middle of St. Stephen, but it was over before I could pinpoint the song (long night). Did anyone else catch that?
First off, I'm on the airplane ... Online trippy. Second, I think you gotta roll with these shows. Some up, some down, somecyour not quite so sure. I am sure that last nights show was fun 4 me. The encore was the best yet of the shows I saw! Yay!!!
they do that whole Jimi Hendrix thing during St. Stephen.
I was at a different show.................
Don't want to be a bummer here but my reviews would be completely different.........
but I just came back from that east coast crazy energy..............
If I had ever seen the Grateful Dead perform the two shows I just saw the Dead perform this weekend, I would likely have de-materialized on the spot.
I stand firmly by my previous assertion.
It's better now than it ever was.
Only, it's not..
But really, it kinda is.
The jimmy Hendrix thing ......Purple haze in and out was very cool. Nice jam.
I'll take any Jerry energy that I can get and definitely got some last night! IMHO
well the it's a good thing you didn't see the Grateful Dead isn't because you wouldn't have been here to see last night plodding
exercise in futility..........
I think they were worse than RATDOG last night and could not even be on the same stage as JERRY...........
thats why they call me drainbow now instead of rainbow................
It just wasn't that good. I wish it was. I REALLY REALLY DO!!!!
Well folks, I was gonna check in on the board gatherings last night at the show, but as the colors in the sunset began to dance I knew it was best to just sit back... and wow, what a show.
H>S>F was perhaps uninspired but tightly executed. A fine job for an opener. Much fun. Good lovin' was slanky and slow, but not Ratdog-Reggae, so it was fresh. A song you can always take another solo on, but they didn't let it drag out. Kept everybody moving, but this wasn't the set-closing type of Good Lovin... Just fun. Cassidy was filler, but no major flubs from what I could see. They got deep in Birdsong. Real deep. Actually, this has always been kind of a "fast forward" song for me, but this "full" treatment of the song was as good as I've heard. UJB was well played, also got pretty out there, great playing by Warren, and they actually got 90% of the vocals right, and that's as good as it gets! It was almost like a 2nd Set 1st set! But of course, I didn't know I was about to get skull-fucked!
UBC was very well executed. Phil's vocals started low, and were not great anyway, but he got all of them out, and the band was in tune with all the changes. I've seen some good Phil/TD UBC's last few years and this tops them all.
From there, the second set hit deep space... TOO was teased at the end of UBC, but then they jammed into it for a long time, just built it up and deconstructed the jam again and again. They were having fun, and Phil was doing mad scientist shit. At one point before the second verse Bobby just put his hands down and stared at Phil. But not one of those invidious "I don't like you any more" stares we've seen before. Just a, "wow, Phil..." kinda thing.. Awesome moment. They really took apart TOO in each of its pieces, weaving in and out of space a la DNF doing Any Naked Eye. And Bobby added "coming in circles" refrain to the chorus, which was kind of a neat retro touch.
FIREDANCERS, FOLKS!
Drums was long and just kept getting better. The beast was raging. It was obvious Mickey and Billy were digging it. The crowd had the firedancers to keep them from the piss line, so everybody just stood there agape and got down! What a perfect segment of the show... And space was space, good bar sounds from Mickey, some of that voice-over crap Mickey does (that seemed to work OK)... except one of the snippets was rather nondescript, and all you could hear was the word "racism," which brought a sudden and slight weird vibe to the moment... Like, what do I call this, "Racism Jam?" "Mickey's child molester voice drums?" But enough of that, I'll save the complaining for a Mickey Hart review.
Sugaree was fun but too slow (out of space it was a natural flow). I'd take a Jackie Greene Sugaree any day. But hey, who asked me? Anyway, Gimme Shelter was solid Warren showing off and being awesome. A perfect fit for this band? No. A rockin' and loud way to bring a set home? sure.
Sugar Mags is filler to me, but it was solid. Bobby got all the words. I guess that means it was good in my book. Bobby was doing 80's style girl screaming, and that means it was awesome, even if ear plugs would might have been advisable.
After Donor rap, when I heard the first notes of St. Stephen, I knew this was going to get wild... Of course, I knew they could send us home with a solo Stephen, but I had a feeling they wouldn't... and they didn't. St. Stephen rocked hard, and then it seems like they were exploring "Millenium Jam" before Warren broke into the 11 for real. Great stuff. Slightly off-kilter, as the 11 often is, but it never fell flat. And I must say Bobby's vocals held up here too...
"What Now?... What Now?... What Noowwww?"
Crosstown Traffic? Holy shit. I actually picked up a Foxy Lady/Crosstown Traffic hybrid, but that was probably more my head than the tune. Dug it though.
At this point I also looked across to the left side of the lawn at the bottom (at the top of the seats?) and saw Nancy's balls a-flyin, and they made me very happy.
Touch was icing on the cake, lagniappe, the type of shit you stay for when everybody else head for the exit. We will get by, indeed. One of the best show's I've seen.
Over all, this kicks the shit out of TD '04 and '03, and was as good as most any Phil incarnation (I won't take an opinion on the Q tho, that's blasphemy). Also tighterAnd my first time at Shoreline, I was the happiest asshole on earth walkin out.
Bobby was smart to stay away from the blue strat. Pinky and that hollow body thing he has sounded great- especially the latter. I can actually dig his playing with it. Warren is also stepping out, leading the band in places, not just being the yoeman. He's a big player, they should continue to let him step out and earn his pay... Drums were ON, and I felt honored to witness such a drawn out Drums-Space segment; in the past this would have been a bathroom break.
A late night for a Sunday, but no regrets. I'll be putting my head back together today, and trying to figure out how to pull Thursday. Sunday will be very, very hard to top.
>> Very cool music but got to say this is not the dance band the GD were. They just don't groove in such a way that ya gotta dance. That's a bummer but on the bright side this

The GD haven't been a Dance band since 1969, but that never stopped anybody!
sorry u 2 feel that way. I was wondrin' bout the drainbow... That's why they call me jenbrightsky . Btw I definitely have seen my or our Jerry. ... Pllllleeeease .

One more song in that Encore would have qualified it as Set 3...
And thats the way it is...from Southern California..

Wow... Very excellent and totally honest review with no slant Jackohearts.
Thanks!
jack O' hearts, Good call. Foxy Lady. No Samson, I just thought about that. For some odd reason didn't even expect it either?
>>>"Bobby had some Shatner moments"<<
That is hilarious!!!!!
Damn, what do they have left for The Gorge!? It's actually close to a full week between the LA/1st Shorline and the Gorge show, so anything goes basically. The Gorge is a new clean slate setlist wise.. Dark Star has NEVER been played there. As well as Scarlet>Fire and a few other monsters. It'd be lovely to hear a Dark Star> Eyes in honor of the blanket of stars above your head at the Gorge...

Lucky Gorge folks!
Watching the video and audio cast, thank you so much all who made it so.
It seemed Phil was having the time of his life the 1st half of the second set, smiles and he really got into the changes in Unbroken Chain.I think that was the best part plus the encore
UJB may have been the best one so far too.
He kinda hung back for the post space and let Warren,Bobby and Jeff shine.
I saw the " oh shit" look before the 11 but come on the guy had the highest standards.
Plus that one was better than MSG no big fumbles.
Phil is fine and what he said at the donor rap was very cool and heart felt.
Welcome home!
Thursday will be another hot one and maybe more driving to get those Shoreline folks whipped into a frenzy.
Take it from your friends back east, it will be really, really good if that happens.
Does anyone have a web link for the fire dancers? I may want to hirer them for a bbq this summer.
>Damn, what do they have left for The Gorge!?
You'll definitely get a Dark Star.
>They really took apart TOO in each of its pieces, weaving in and out of space a la DNF doing Any Naked Eye. And Bobby added "coming in circles" refrain to the chorus, which was kind of a neat retro touch.
THAT'S A FACT JACK!
I have to admit, it sounded pretty darn good just the way it was..but seeing Sless in the audience kinda bummed me out, I wanted him on stage too - sless is MORE.
I watched this show. Bobby on all vocals of birdsong was a real let down. Musically, it was all right, due to a competent Phil Lesh playing it how it is supposed to be played. I like the earlier version(4-28) I heard when warren sang a verse. Oh well. The second set started strong. Drums was the same deal that they have been doing this tour and is kinda getting repetitive. I miss how they used to ride the energy of the band going into drums and the spontaneousness that the rythem devils used to have. I also missed the old fractal infused video feeds that meshed band members and tripped you out. This attempt at video shows how far along the band was in 92-95 as far as technology and computer aided psychadelia is concerned. On this night in Mountain View, they seemed to do is blur the members in and out of focus. I must say that Candace Brightman is truly missed on this tour. The lights in general seem generic and lame, especially given what we were given as far as a light show is concerned back in the 90's. Even the eightys were better. To me this doesn't make any sense. it has been 15 years, hasn't technology improved in this time?! Even other ones/dead tours in 98, 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2004 were waaayyy better, visually. (Obviously I think the band is better now, and that is what counts). Anyway the sugaree out of space should have been a stella blue(warren), the fact that it was Bobby on vocals was a question mark at first, but then reinforced by what appeared to be a lost and confused Bob Weir, the same one I remember from new years as not knowing where he was at. This may be due to a local connection, or maybe he got a little too wasted in his home town. Either way, the energy was diminished at that point, and put skids on an alright show. It was painful watching weir finish this song, and I was so uninterested that I pulled myself away from the screen to mess around the kitchen. It was horrible. A train wreck. And unfortunately, besides the solid Gimme shelter, the rest of the show was butchered by Bob Weir, god bless him. The sugar magnolia was weak. And the little 'pep' thing that he does in the beginning of the sugar mag jam, before the SSDD, again seemed unwelcome and uncomfortable for the rest of the band to follow. No one smiled during this. Bob: please save your egotistical showboat routine for your Ratdog faithfull and just do your job with this band. The Dead is not all about Weir, it is about the Grateful Dead. Sing the songs right...even if they are your own. After a descent SSDD, weir seemed to not be able to wait to get back stage for whatever awaited him there..he basically ran off stage. Even Phil seemed disturbed by weir(or something) as he did his donor rap. They came back out for what could have been a killer encore: St. Stephen. This was done nicely, and the band seemed to again be smiling in unison, until Weir came back too early for the reprise. Clearly phil is in charge as the rest of the band waited for his cue to bring the song back despite weirs attempt to end it prematurely. Then a descent the eleven, which was saved only by Phil and Warren singing the back up vocals how they are supposed to be sang(unlike MSG earlier in tour). I still can not stand Weir singing the song incorrectly with the 'this is the season of WHAT NOW'. Drop the NOW buddy, this is not ratdog. He clearly wants to be the leader way too much. Anyone with problems with Phil's voice can not tell me that Weir sings better. Don't get me wrong, when it comes to reciting a Dylan tune, there is no one better. His voice really started bumming me out as he came back for the "what now" reprise over and over again. I actually turned the telecast off at that point and completely missed the Touch of Grey...which if it was sung by weir, I am thankful not to have watched. I am sorry. I went to Philly and Chicago, and all I am saying is if I had made it out for this show, which I was planning on, earlier in the tour, I would have left pissed. The LA show looked awesome though. Maybe they were a little tired. All I know is the band sounded way better out east, I will even say Denver and LA rocked. So what happened in Shoreline? I never thought I would say this but thank goodness I didn't spend the money to make it happen. Just my 2cents.
The vibe was mellower but come on you are missing the boat here, that Sugaree got real good and if you think Sugar Mag was a throw away, it was as good as the one in Philly, then I don't know what to say.
I am sure Thursday will be more "on" as far as higher energy and rockin tunes.
Last night had some amazing moments that stack up with the best they did on this tour.
the sugar mag in philly kinda bummed me out there, too. The song is awesome, maybe my favorite weir closer(where is the Around and Around?) and basically always has been. I guess I just dont like the way bobby starts the jam before the SSDD. It is clunky and unnecessary, interupting the flow of the song. Although it bothers me, I am aware that this is the way he has been singing it for years(post Jerry), including all the incarnations of the dead. I wish he would jam it like he did with the Grateful Dead. The SSDD did not dissapoint last night, though. It was solid with an acceptable amount of showboating or what is expected on this stage. I just have a problem when he takes his songs to 'Ratdog' levels of cheese, and anyone who thinks he sings em the same way he did with the dead is dead wrong. His cheese level has always been there through the years, I know. But since Jerry's been gone, it has been through the roof, hence one of the reasons I love Phil's Bands these last 10 years. For instance, Bob sings every song with Ratdog, does that mean that it is right, or even sounds right, for him to attempt that with the boys? I don't know what his hang up is. I know he feels like he channels Jerry. All I am saying is this seems like it is a collective attempt at Grateful Dead music, not solo stuff. Maybe what is going on is purposefull attempts to bum people out to keep the crowds from getting too out of control like what the band did in the 90's with easy answers, eternity, shoe fits, way to go, samba, etc. In my opinion, that sugaree ranked up there(minus the jamming in between the lyrics which I loved) with any of those 'throw away' tunes they played then. Come on, how is it any different than playing easy answers out of space in seattle 95 after a blowout show through drumz? That being said, I am sure the 14th will be way better.
i feel like im in a bad episode of the old tv show "sliders" because the show i saw in la and the reviews i am reading of tonight dont jive at all. ive been on the bus long enough to know the differance and i saw a band fully engaged with each other. phil was his normal pschyed out self dropping bomds all over the forum. no disconect or anything. ive said it before and ill say it again, look out the window and not thru the rear view mirror. life is straight ahead and it looks good. peace, love and many more tours!!!!
The only really shitty thing about last night's show is DAMN Shoreline sound system ! 20 years, and the Bridge School is the only show that has good sound.
I miss The Spectrum already and pray The Dead show up with The Altman's tomorrow night at The Fox in Oak-town- Jackie too !
How can a reviewer know what Bobby/Phil/Warren/Billy/Mickey think when they are playing music? I always find this funny with Deadheads. It's been going on since day one. All they are trying to do is play Dead music for their fans and make a connection with the audience. And having a negative review from someone who watched it on TV/computer compared with someone who was at the show. Unreal. The show clicked last night including a massive encore. If you can't handle it don't go. I saw the show from the 5th row and they were on. Of course, there were a few mistakes but that didn't stop me from dancing. I made it to the kitchen at 2:30 AM. PST time. One more show at Shoreline. Hooray! A much mellower enriched life out in the Bay Area that destroys living back East. You only wish you saw the music that's been played out here. Why do you think The Dead/Santana/Airplane and other bands live out here?
first of all, I love this band. "Many more tours", indeed. As for the west coast lifestyle, lets see, I saw vegas 94, 95...all three shows each year. I went to Summer sessions 99 at the greek, both shows. I saw Kimock Band July 2000 at the GAMH in San Francisco, all three shows. In 2002, I saw phil at The Frost, and two more shows at the Greek, red rocks and aspen labor day weekend, i went to Dead Rocks 03, then "Q" reunion shows at the Warfield late sept 03, and I was at the New Years shows this past winter(08-09)...so I believe that should straighten your theory about me, if it is me you are talking about. Those are among the many, many Dead, Phil related shows I saw out east and in the midwest. Believe me when I tell you, the spectrum shows were better, and I'll say first night Chicago. Really, all 4 philly/chi shows were better than shoreline, and yes I watched it on my cpu. I don't care if you were front row and went backstage. Who cares. I would be living in Cali if I weren't obligated to care for my ill father, I was supposed to be living there, as a matter of fact, in n.cali..today. I think I know when they are on and aren't. They were probably tired from tour. Oh well. Many of my close friends who live in N.cali now are planning on going the 14th and I fully encourage. My opinion counts. Maybe what you should do is check out the archive and listen to night 2 philly, and night 1 chicago and then post your silly message. If you'd like I will burn you copies of the sbds I purchased at those shows, as I fully support this band.Laid back, phuleeeez. Do your homework before you front.
Not comparing shows on what was better. From all accounts and reviews Philly probably was the best shows of the tour but does it really matter. I listened to the show on archives and had friends who taped it and I agree it smoked. Everybody has their own opinions and experiences at a Dead show and that's part of the fun. But you can't say these guys aren't trying to make it happen. And being at a live show is 10 times better than listening to it on a CD. That's why I like live music whoever is playing. The CD's are for the memories. Moved from East to West in 1976 and saw every Dead show in the Bay Area ever since. The energy is mellower out here but the quality and venues where we see our music is priceless and you mention some of the gems. Every band loves playing in the Bay Area and usually plays their best. Let's see what your friends say on Thursday. You're cool! Until then.

There is a word for a statement like that..oxymoron..??..
Contradiction pehaps..
But those dots..in my mind..do not connect..
Your passion tho is apparant...
What is important...
Is Zone healing vibes..sending out from the Western Shore..

>>>>A much mellower enriched life out in the Bay Area that destroys living back East. You only wish you saw the music that's been played out here. Why do you think The Dead/Santana/Airplane and other bands live out here?
Now if that is not a pompous and ethnocentric statement I don't know what is? lol lol
It was two great shows both in LA and Shoreline. The thing is from what my best buddy told me the LA show, he was there, was better than last night. Not the encore but the show in it's entirity.
Now it one thing to get shown up by the east and the megalopolis but by LA?
OMG!!!!
Only kidding it's all good.
Now make Thursday even more special and it is ok to sing along, we won't tell ;)
Plus New Mexico has it over the west and the east anyways
my six year old daughter wrote a review:
"On Sunday I went to a concert. It was a lot of fun. I met a kid (another zoners daughter) and we became friends. We had some candy and some pretzel and french fries. It was good. We left at 11 o'clock and we sat on the grass. I couldn't see the people that were playing the music."
it was a great day for us a family, thanks to the Grateful Dead and all that still sail...
Hey Now,
This is all so funny, Im not sure what it is but it seems we as deadheads "well some of us anyways" seem to have this desire to segment things East/West Phil/Bobby Set 1 Songs/Set 2 Songs eras of the band what have you.
I think it may be a side effect of the LSD anyone watch "House" tonight must be some that left brain-right brain stuff and LSD has slightly warped ours
Peace
Personally I've never been to a Dead show where Weir comes out and starts bitching and pointing his fingers at the crowd. That set the tone for a crap night IMO. What a douche.
I thought that he was joking around....I saw Bobby and the rest of the band laughing there asses off while they were talking to the audience. looked like they were having a good time on stage and bob was being a prankster by try to sound serious by getting everyone to their seats. just sayin.....that's the way I saw it.
Great review, Canyon's daughter!!! Best one I've read all tour.
For me I felt closer to the Grateful Dead at each of the five nights at the Warfield last May with Phil than I did last night, which while good felt more like nostalgia than something current and alive.
Personally I find this band to sound like a bunch of guys from other bands that used to play together a long time ago. Good and sometimes very good, but always safe and a bit cautious and predictable, careful and always somehow slightly, subtly apart, with nothing ever really getting too deep or raw. Obviously that's only my take, but there it is.
Warren is a very good player, but there is no player that can fill that chair in that band. He's good, sometimes excellent, but always of this earth. He's never someone that confounds my ear or twists me into a pretzel with a single note, convincing me that he's not from "around here".
The keyboard playing is professional but always completely obvious and straightforward; cookie-cutter blaa.
Weir's guitar sounded good and he sang his own songs well enough, but he's not going to take any band over the top on his own at this point.
But the worst was Mickey. He was just embarrassing with his foolish look-at-me mallets pounding jumble, and worse than how it makes him look and sound, it has a very negative effect on Billy's playing, washing out his subtle grooves. And I'm a big Mickey fan, but for me his work in this band is a completely self-centered waste. Boo.
Phil sounded great and was the only thing that came as advertised, IMO.
For me the show worked as a nostalgia event and was fun overall, and the band was never bad, but was a bit dull most of the time, even when it was good. Just like most nostalgia acts are.
IMO their only hope is that they just haven't played together enough yet, especially considering how many different songs they've played.
If they had another full leg or two of the tour, cut down their play list and repeated songs every three or four shows they'd get more comfortable with each other, relax with the music and get deeper, harder and edgier. But at least for me that is not what's happening now, and the tour is basically over.
BTW, I think Phil just had a little cold.
>Anyone with problems with Phil's voice can not tell me that Weir sings better.<
Weir sings better than Phil. Far far better.
I thought I would put in my 2 cents since have seen some very positive and very negative feedback on this show in this thread and find it odd that people are taking time to write reviews after watching or listening to a show via computer with all of the sonic limitations and complete lack of context regarding the set and setting of the atmosphere and vibe at the show. One might consider them quite irrelevant to be honest compared to those who were actually in the house...just a thought and no disrespect intended for anyones opionion.
Anyway, my bottom line is that this was a very good show at least dead center behind the soundboard in Section 202. My only comparitive point of reference is limited since it was my first show of this tour but do typically see all Phil or Bobby or David Nelson Band incarnations in Northern California and sometimes Hawaii and was fortunate to see at least 50 shows with Jerry in either the GD or JGB from 87 to 95.
My expectations were exceeded and it almost felt like days gone by to be back at the Shoreline with the coolest music fans on the planet to hang out with and dance along with what the 2009 version of the best band this region has ever produced.
I can't wait for Thursday and tonight the Allman Brothers at the small Fox Theater here in Oakland should be a good time as well with perhaps some guest suprises but we shall see.
Peace out and it was nice to see all you cool folk again at Shoreline which isn't perfect at all but has history as it was basically built for the GD by Bill Graham if any of you know the Bay Area history.
Steve in Nor Cal
>>>If you'd like I will burn you copies of the sbds I purchased at those shows, as I fully support this band.<<<
Greg, you realize that by doing this you are ripping off the band you claim to support. If someone wants a free copy, let them download the audience recording.
(Maybe you were being sarcastic and I missed the boat, wouldn't be the first time...)
This was my only stop on the tour, and my expectations were to have a great time with my family, and my family. Expectations exceeded!
The music was enjoyable, but safe is the word that comes to mind most. Still, fun to be there with all the smiling faces and feeling the love and energy that flows when we're all together.
And that was the overall feeling of the day for me - love, energy, and family. All the moms and kids enjoying the day together. And thousands of people just happy to see each other and be together one more time.
BIG THANKS to all you folks who made the day so special for The Canyoneros! Best Mother's Day EVER!
Steve in NorCal is right on.
I never thought I would say this but thank goodness I didn't spend the money to make it happen. Just my 2cents.If it's the economy I understand but for you other folks too bad.
This was the first show of four nights. A good portion of the Deadheads are going to two Dead shows and two Allman Brothers shows in the same week. You can't beat that. So far so good. Allmans tonight at the Fox(Amazing Theater). Yeah! We could all be tired at Shoreline on Thursday but we will be their supporting the band and hanging with friends.
Agree with Larry and Steve, I went to two shows at Worcester and had a great time, the band exceeded all expectations. Never tried to compare to the Grateful Dead. Just plain happy all these guys were on stage together...and playing much better than 2004. Gregulator gave me a headache and has way to much to say after watching it.....not being there. He has a right to an opinion but....
Ok... here is my play by play of the show...
I had seats dead center in row twelve... sweet!!
Set 1
Help On The Way>
Slipknot!>
Franklin's Tower
This was well executed. Right away, i was pleased and surprised at how much energy they were playing with. Based on the early shows in the tour, I was afraid it would be overly mellow and noodly. I was pleased that Warren was getting creative with his tones and playing somewhat fiercely. Bobs playing was decisive and creative (this was true for most of the show).
Good Lovin'
Good version. It did not blow my socks off, but it was more than adequate. At this point in the show I was feeling pleased that the band seemed to be on top of their musical ability.
Cassidy
This was interesting. During the jam, the band seemed to be opening up the space for warren to fill with his guitar work. At first he was not able to find the right angle, but slowly he worked his way into position and filled the space nicely. I really hope that the band keeps touring. Throughout the night I kept seeing things like this where they would find their groove given a chance. It would be great to see them playing where they have that stuff worked out, and were able to fal into the right places earlier in a jam.
Birdsong>
This is one of my all time favorite songs. I liked this bird song, but did not love it. This is another tune that I think would really benefit from them playing it more. It was played very differently from the way the GD did it. I am in favor of them freshly interpreting the material, but I found myself wishing that they did not deviate from the old way of doing the jam quite so much. Perhaps given time, they will find a solid new voice for this song though.
Uncle John's Band
This was good. Solid vocal delivery and nice jamming. It was nice to hear it jammed in a somewhat traditional way.
Set 2
Unbroken Chain
This vas a very good version... almost fantastic. the high energy middle of the song jam was great. Everything was going well leading up to the soft beautiful jam at the end, and then Warren jumped the gun and threw the rest of the band off kilter. They never quite recovered, though the jam still managed to be pretty good. This will be remembered as the almost perfect UBC that got away. It was too bad, because my friend who has relatively recently gotten into the Dead was there, and I keep telling him how awesome the jam at the end of UBC can be.
The Other One>
This was a really really good version. The jamming was driving, intense, and psychedelic. There were a couple of disjointed moments, but over all it was super sweet. I was really impressed with the guitar tones that Bob and Warren were using.
*Rhythm Devils (Drums)>
What can I say?... just absolutely fantastic. These guys were at the top of their game. The fire dancers were a nice treat too. Mickey is a frickin genius.
Space>
Space started off sort of ho hum, but eventually got to a cool insectoid place. I felt like I was in the hidden valley of the magical praying mantises in the area where they protect their eggs. I was of course heavily distracted by many loud talking folks around me. I asked one guy to be quiet, and he tried to inform me that it is well known that nobody is interested in listening to space. I beg to differ, and think that it should be obvious that the GD and Dead would not have played it every show if they thought no one was interested. Actually, loud talkers were a problem the whole show, but it is more noticeable during space because the volume tends to be lower. All in all i have to say that I love the music, but as a larger group, dead heads tend to be a bunch of ignorant fucks.
Sugaree
This was the best song of the show for me. Bob really sang the shit out of it. The way the vocals and the music came together during the last two verses was just magical. Bob seemed to hit a real emotional place during this song. I do not have good vision, but my partner said he was wiping tears from his face during this song. This was true Grateful dead music. My suspicion is that what came across in that song will not transfer to the recording. That energy carried through the rest of the show.
Gimme Shelter>
This was interesting. After Sugaree, Bob was standing there looking a bit stuck in thought. warren started the song in a way that felt like he was saying 'come on, we can do this'. i know that interpreting the dynamics on stage is a silly thing to try to do, but this is what it looked like to me. The song was ok, but the feeling of the on stage dynamics was what touched me.
Sugar Magnolia
Good version, again, it felt touched by the energy that was started in Sugaree. There was a bittersweet quality to it.
Donor Rap / Intros
As mentioned in my earlier post, I was perceiving something being off with Phil most of the night (I started to take notice during birdsong). I was concerned during the donor rap, because his vocal delivery sounded mentally confused. Listen to the recording and see for yourself. I hope he just had a cold or something. Throughout the night though his body language was very different than in the past few years.
E: St. Stephen>
The Eleven>
Very good version of both. i especially liked what the guitarists were doing leading up to the 'Lady Finger' part. Very trippy stuff.
Touch of Grey
Touch was ok. I think I would prefer that they reinterpret this song if they are going to continue to play it. The way it was played really seemed like it needed Jerry to work. I enjoyed the sentiment of the song though.
I didn't even think of that, dude. Good point, my goal isn't to rip of the band. Sorry about the headache Rick...I wasn't there. I thought I made it clear that I am all about this band. After talking about how pleased we were about the first night chicago, a close friend of mine actually made a roll out petition that me and many others, entering the Allstate night two, eagerly signed in hopes to convince the boys to keep touring. I never said shoreline show sucked...it just lost momentum out of space with the weir vocals on sugaree, the band seemed to be off a bit. But on a whole, I couldn't be happier about all of this music, and I'm hoping for a fall tour, maybe after the allmans tour late summer. Or wherever, whenever..they should keep it goin. They should also try getting Candice back on board as well. IMO. Sorry if my post bummed too many people out. I'll bet the next two will be best of tour. Peace
Here is the funny SFGATE review of Sunday show at ye ole' DUMP.
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2 009/05/12/DDGV17IEEE.DTL
Peace Out, see y'all tonight and Thursday
I think peoples expectations are way outta whack all together. You are not gonna get your mind blown here. What you should expect and hope for IS A REAL GOOD TIME.. Drinka few beers in the parking lot and tell old stories, go in, meet up with friends, laugh, tell more stories, drink more beer, smoke your mind, tell more stories, listen to the music, be thankful these men are still around cranking out such FUN music, laugh more, wiggle your butt, sit down, stand up, drink another beer, scream, repeat as soon as possible!
But DO US ALL A FAVOR AND DON'T LOOK FOR EXPERIENCES YOU HAD IN THE PAST.. THIS IS TODAY, YESTERDAY IS GONE! SHINE!
>>>You are not gonna get your mind blown here
I disagree... i had my mind blown at Shoreline, and so did the people who were with me. This band has mind blowing potential. I think that given time, they can achieve soul throttling too.
"I think that given time, they can achieve soul throttling too."
LOL... been a loooong time since I've had a good soul throttling!
YES! They do have "mind blowing potential" and like Bobby said in the Nassau video, "the only way that were gonna get all this material down pat is by continuing to tour and not goin to sleep when were not touring"...so lets ALL hope that they will continue to tour!!
While I don't know that this lineup has true mind-blowing potential, I'm certainly not going to rule it out from the start. Phil Lesh can always blow my mind, so there's always the possibility.
As for the show, I think I felt it was a bit of a let down, but I kind of expected that after seeing the setlist from the night before. Honestly, I don't think I've seen a "mind-blowing" show of the Dead or any post-Garcia incarnation in this venue since well before Jerry died (were any of the 90s Other Ones shows mind-blowing?..I don't recall) - this place doesn't seem to bring out the best in these guys the way the Greek or the Warfield did/does. Not really much of surprise, given the sterile nature of the surrounding. Certainly, the 45-minute delay didn't help set the tone.
That being said, I think there were some very good, and even a few outstanding moments. I think the sound of the band even exceeded my expectations at a number of points.
First Set:
Help>Slip>Franklins was a nice opener - fairly well executed, but never seemed to get very out there.
Good Lovin / Cassidy - I'm sorry, but after a nice opener like the above, a double-shot of Weir tunes just didn't take me out there. Guess I should've expected something like this, but it seemed like too much Weir too soon. I'll agree that Good Lovin' wasn't horrific, and Cassidy was OK, but that's about the best I can say. Probably should've taken an early restroom break like the many others I saw doing just that.
Bird Song - I thought it seemed pretty well played instrumentally (didn't Weir sing it? Not a good tune for his voice these days) and was well into it when nature reared its ugly head (that delayed start didn't help, nor does my age and those huge overpriced beers). Probably the first time I've ever dragged myself away during a Bird Song.
UJB - I thought this was pretty nice, and got into some nice spacey jamming towards the end - I liked it, but it really ended way too abruptly. I definitely wasn't ready for a set break at this point, but I should've expected it.
Fortunately, the band took a reasonable break (like 35-40 minutes, which is relatively short for these guys).
2nd Set:
Unbroken Chain - As someone else mentioned, this was a really nice version that was almost a great one (not quite the Q, but...). It made a nice transition into
The Other One - this was probably the high point of the show for me. I would've normally liked a Cryptical first, but the transition from UBC was really nice and then this thing took off. I thought Bob was playing some really nice, dissonant stuff - and I could hear him really clearly in the mix. I was totally impressed at this point as to how locked in he was and how he was pushing Warren to play some really good leads (honestly, everything becomes a bit of blur by the end, but I do remember being rather impressed during this segment). Phil then led into the 2nd verse with his signature riff, which could've definitely used some more low-end, but it was nice to hear it just the same. Had the show been at this level for the whole thing, I would've had no gripes.
Drums>Space - while I thought the fire dancers were visually interesting, I didn't ever really get much of a sense of what the whole drum jam was going for. Seemed rather techo to me, and I think the dancers distracted me from the music. Space was OK, but I don't recall much of it (probably having to listen to some overly drunk dudes yak, at this point).
Sugaree - once again, the choice of this out of space was somewhat perplexing to me - could've thought of 10 other songs I would've rather heard at this point, but whatever. I think it was generally well played, though it should've been sung by Warren. Honestly, despite the fact that Weir is one of the core 4, Warren does the vocals more justice than Weir can muster with his raspy, half-spoken vocals (and I'm not a huge, huge fan of Warren's vocals).
Well, here's where the typical drunken chatterer Shoreline problem reared its ugly head. Right as the song is building toward some nice Warren soloing, the guy next to me (he's moved down the row from his previous spot 4 guys away) has to start yelling every 30 seconds, "WARREN HAYNES!!! OUTSTANDING STUFF, MAN!!" - or some ridiculous variation of that scream. After which, he turns to his buddy to chat about how great it is before deciding to let out another scream. The guy didn't shut his trap for more than 30 seconds to listen to his beloved Warren - he'd yell after Warren played one lousy note...DUDE...STFU!!! I attempted to let the guy know he was killing me, but he was too much of stubborn douchebag to acknowledge his obnoxiousness. Anybody who's screaming Warren's name incessantly at a Dead concert clearly got on the bus a bit late (the driver should've kicked his sorry ass off - or just drove off a cliff).
So, after trying to move away from this guy, to little avail since his voice was too loud to ignore, Sugaree was essentially killed for me, and then he proceeded to pretty much do the same for Gimme Shelter. I thought it was an OK choice, though it pretty much indicated the set was soon to end. Didn't really get as rockin' as I would've liked, but perhaps I was too busy listening to Warren Haynes' name being yelled in my ear.
Sugar Mag - end of set, for sure. Probably sounded OK, but was never my favorite, though always a great party tune. Never really brought to the heights of the Grateful Dead without Garcia.
Encore:
St. Stephen - knew it before they hit the first note, and it was really nice. Nice long version (Oh, of course Bob came in on verse 3 a bit too soon, but no big deal) and it was a really welcome choice - also seemed very well executed. There were definitely some cool teases in here somewhere of Hendrix (sounded like Purple Haze, to me) and I also heard a Whippin' Post thing going on. This was a very hot section of the encore - most enjoyable. Also knew they'd take it into The Eleven, and that went a long way towards making me feel a bit better about the show - at least they did ACTUALLY play well past what I believe curfew is at Shoreline. Oh, but I have to agree with the person who was ragging on Weir's whole "Season of WHAT NOW?!...WHAT NOW?!" WTF, Bob!! Enough already! I've seen you do it before, but it's still just as annoying as it was the first time. WHAT NOW?!! Just chill, Bob, please! Somewhere, Jerry is cringing (or laughing his ass off).
Touch of Grey was nice enough, and I'm glad they tacked on at least one more typical encore tune to wrap things up. Hey, I can't complain with a half hour encore or almost mini-3rd set.
Overall, the show has some very good/excellent (dare I say "sublime") moments, but these were definitely balanced out by the so-so ones, and by the disjointed nature of the show.
I'm expecting/hoping that Thursday will be a more cohesive and flowing show. Still, Sunday was enjoyable and exceeded my expectations in some ways.
Good review Alex.
Lance,
Thanks buddy. I wish my reviews/comments were as well thought out and written as most of yours seem to be - I've really liked your reviews/comments about this show (and just about all your other ones I've read).
Hope to cross paths with you soon. Where will you be tomorrow night (general location)?
The Allmans smoked at the Fox last night especially the second set. Warren wasn't tired.
I will be just about everywhere.
I will also be nowhere much of the time.
I am the (long) wind.
After Bob shatners "without love in the dream, it'll never come true", just before entering Slipknot, who gives the monster-like "YEAH"? Is that Phil?
I think Mickey triggered it
that shoreline show was fucking awesome. if you didnt have a blast, and if you didnt think the band rocked..check yourself, not the tunes..
everyone i was with thought it was fantastic..as did I..
its just a state of mind..its up to you how good they sound!
>>>its just a state of mind..its up to you how good they sound!
Hey, if it's just a state of mind, I might as well just stay home and imagine the music. Seriously, I agree with your basic sentiment here, but I don't think it's quite that simple. I'm sorry, but my being in a great state of mind isn't necessarily going to turn shit into gold (not saying this show was shit, by any means).
Like I said, there is some validity to your point.
here's a review of the show that appeared in the Marin Independent Journal
http://www.marinij.com/marinnews/ci_12345019
