under the stars.... what a time for all.
Don't have a lot of "requests" as with all the shows... anything goes...
Weather is looking SWEEEEEEEEET!!!!!!!!!!!
Music never Stopped opener
"There's mosquitos on the river, fish are jumpin' up like birds..."
Big Dark Star themed second set with an acoustic Ripple to end the encore...
All local websites here have weather on Saturday: Partly cloudy - upper 70's, possible low 80's!!!!!
Partly cloudy means AMAZING SUNSET!!!!!!!!! Lows around 50, so quite warm for this time of year after sundown
"Big Dark Star themed second set with an acoustic Ripple to end the encore..."
Now your talkin'
how did you post that image?
how did you post that message
Heres where it all goes down: talk about your partly cloudy skies at sunset... ahhhhhhh: .
Can you say SHANG-RA-LA!!!
~can't wait to pop my first beer in the lot after the drive and take in the majestic view and warm dry Eastern Washington air!!
Temps are now looking like mid 80's!!!!!!!
~and yes I will admit it, I am strangely looking forward to hear a few Doobie Brothers songs under the hot mid-day sun. I'll be the one up in the tiers dancing my butt off to China Grove, Listen to To the Music and Rockin' Down the Highway!!!
**Trivia: When is the last time The Grateful Dead played with the Doobie Brothers?? Winner gets a beer on me at the show!

Last Gorge weather update. Looks like it's gonna be a cooker. Lets hope for some nice breezes off the river. Saturday night looks like a warm night too. Lows in the high 50's.... Shakedown's gonna be nutz!
national Weather service has the high around 75 Saturday. I tend to trust them more than the commercial sites.
Based on the Shoreline setlists and the alignment of the planets at this hour, I’m making these predictions. I used to make predictions by set but this band has thrown out those rules.
In no particular order or set:
The Music Never Stopped(opener!)
Big River
Althea
Candyman
Iko Iko

Im thinking a "best of" from the tour.. all the best moments/tunes crammed into three sweaty booty shakin tribal stompin sets under the stars!
Does anyone know if there will be any type of video stream tonight in addition to the Sirius broadcast?
Almost ready to leave! Got the grub and goodies packed in the pack, strawberries, bananas, my world famous apple cinnamon oatmeal phatty pancakes... and speakin of phatty... : ) It is a beautiful day for a 2 hour drive to the gorge... Won't really have texting capacity from the venue but am sure another zoner will keep everyone posted and of course the BROADCAST! you are all with me in spirit....
Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul...
Michael
Looking for extras if anyone knows my number is 847-494-9457
thanks,
robbie
what's the show time with this one?
I NEED RIDE FROM GORGE TO AIRPORT AFTER THE SHOW. PLEASE PLEASE PLESAE CALL 847-912-0169
Thanks
OK, just signed up for my (2nd) 3-day free trial. Only took a minute of surfing to find the offer. Had to set up a new email account. Wish I was there in body rather than in spirit.... the show is going to melt. The 5-hour show is not out of the realm of possibility - I was among the lucky ones there for EPIC Phil's closing of the Warfield 5-18-08 (almost a year ago today), played till almost 4 in the morning. Actually this is the one year anniversary of the Workingmans Dead>Americal Beauty show with David Nelson on the Jerry vox.
The Boys are going to have Fun tonight....
Saw a reference to Derek. Will he be there 2nite? Just checked his site, nothing going on until tomorrow in CA so very possible....

Everybody enjoy tonight!!
Anyone else think that it would been kewl if the GD played some old shows at setbreak?
clusterf**k as usual from XM
This show is at "The Gorge," right ? I always thought The Gorge was in George, WA - hence the name. Yet it says Quincy, WA everywhere is this one of those things where it is just NEAR the other city (George) - like when they say the Buffalo Bills play in Buffalo sometimes, but when they really specify it, they say Orchard Park NY ?
smile smile smile !
.. stoked for 1st note back on Eastern L.I.
....... what a wonderful world tonight
anyone at the gorge who can give an update?
Albany NY here!
Yeah I hope it is just running late not some mess up with Sirius/XM like some dude forgot to pull the auto program tape

Jack,
Saratoga is a great place...The state park and SPAC are just grand!!
this may be a stupid question but it there a way to see the posts as they come in or do I have to keep refreshing the page?
They just started. . . meandering jam.... Derek is on stage... and... yes... Morning Dew with Derek! Warren on vox!
Let's get this party started! Bring on the Sirius stream!!
Is anyone else gettin locked out of Sirius?
WTF
Ted were not locked out but the show isnt playing
I'd really like to listen to that ABB set, but I cannot get live365 to work for me. I have the latest version of Firefox. I have the updated Flash player. I've uninstalled/reinstalled it a dozen times. It simply will not let me onto the station. bummer.
I read a post where they said the Brothers Band ended at 10:20. That could make for the delay.
Phil's checking the equipment

Most recent the Dead Albany Knickerbocker 4/17/09--sorry I know it's the Times Union these days, but it will always be "the Knick" to me (saw the GD first run of shows there, too 3/24-26/90!); 'least it's no longer the "Pepsi Arena"...

what is up with Sirius? Anyone getting the feed? While this 71 show smokes I want me some LIVE DEAD!!!!
Was hoping they would encore the Music never stopped and made the tour a Music sandwhich! They sound great! Enjoy and hope for a return tour!
well my son goes to NC State.
That's exactly what he did. Can't say we all didn't see it coming. Shame though. Anyway, I own Desperate Annie's across the street.

I've been very drunk in your bar...don't think you owned it back then. you going to Mtn. Jam?
Phil is blasting. I hope it sounds the same way for the people there. The recordings from Chicago make it sound like he was loud in the mix, but the first night, he was barely there in the room.
The music just stopped!
Didn't Bobby say it will never stop?
Bebop Baby how can this be....
Took over in late '93.
Mtn Jam still a possibility, but not looking good at the moment.
Ive been wondering why Warren choose the Explorer looking axe as his primary for The Dead even in Mule he doesnt use it much I'm wondering if was consciously tring to change his tone from ABB or something.
organ sounds great. never loud/clear enough at the shows i got to see.
they gotta tour again.
Ahhh...I was sober from '93-99 and moved up here to Lake Placid area in '96...I'll have to swing by next time i'm in town
Jeff is playing Brent's old Hammond B-3
gotta love warren on loose lucy
crazy fungers
Buck I went to School at Plattsburgh St ,Im sure you must have gone to the 83 Lake Placid show
Hello Jackstraw from Wichita - How about a Tony Luke's special right about now?
sorry just saw I typed funger instead of fingers.
Been drinking for a while
The PAF/soapbars are more mellow than those 'hot' Les Pauls. ABB is a hard rockin sound ya know? The Dead is rockin but not so much
They do this song nice justice. Phil is relentless.
How about the '80 Glens Falls show?
does he have the leslie with the backwards flag on it?
Gotta go babysit the boozers and recent (today) college graduates. Enjoy the rest of the show, folks. I hope to do the same around 4am.
nope...I lived in Boulder and Crested Butte from 1980-86.
damn...a Skidmore graduation party...ahh those young rich girls all boozed up...
BTW 'was at '83 Placid. Sweet sweet Sugaree, and '83 SPAC...Monumental, monsterous, thundering Dew!!!
Adam my 1st show was the Aug 79 GF show
Warren had the Leslie at Shoreline, didn't notice the sticker. too far back on the lawn.
It's what I live for, Buck!!!
I was at that show Jack...and RPI the year before..now that was an experience
Yeah Buck I imagine we stomped some of the same ground Im in that 40 somethingish range as well
only the second time I ever dosed...and ohh man did we trip out
my daughter just grad from the rpi field house
brents leslie had a backwards flag decal and i think phil has been toting it around.
Jackstraw where are you? In bed already?

Hey Now France!!!!!
phil !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
phil belts out the dark star!!!
yes bonjour to our friend in France...salute
my guess is that we will be lucky if we get a short run of The Dead in SF at New Years. Philathon at the Beacon in Novemeber ?
yeah got the Sirius feed--courtesy of Mogulus--HUGE props to them! from the computer to one of my stereo set-ups: going vintage tonight with the Nikko NR-719 receiver and modified Acoustic Research AR11B Loudspeakers; I stepped outside and put it this way: my immediate neighbors are getting this show, too; whether they want it or not!
Greta Jam out of Crazy Fingers into...Dark Star!!! with Phil, Bobby, and then Warren trading-off verses! Very Sweet and Gooey...
It's midnight in Manhattan.....
hey France...Sunlight blossoms!
That my quess as well but Mule has been doing the New Years shows for awile now so I wonder if it wont be till next spring at the earliest
you think the beacon instead of nokia
Ide think the Garden if anything but no way to book that for a week in Nov
nice chimenti piano space jam vox populus organic
Dead Mule Bros. for new years then.
sneaky bastards...I thought for sure we were getting UJB
One thing for sure this tour you aint guessing setlists LOL
Imagine nine nights @ MSG in late fall ..
more pictures please
they forgot the words again
Nokia in NYC is better then the Beacon. Its GA and smaller the the Beacon.
well less predictable than tours of old or recent...but....i called for Maggies Farm out of a space jam (started as a joke in Albany and became a running gag at the Worcester shows) ...and damn if they didn'y actually do it in Buffalo.
omg
There is a interview with Bobby on dead.net where he says that they just re-learned all these songs and doesn't want to wait too long before they play them again. He kind of laughs and says they need to go back on the road and work these songs some while they are still fresh.
Tom Thumbs Break out
chimenti at shoreline and tonight is on FIRE
OK...Dead Mule Bros. for 10 nights in November at the Nokia it is.
......
Buck I ended driving back for that weekend from WI I loved 2nd night Worcestor
Gotta Love it!

As always THANK YOU TAPER ROB!!!!

I read they extended Dickie a invite for the Beacon run and he turned it down oh well we all know how fragile egos in a band can be tis the reason we all had to wait 4 plus years for this to happen again

that link was posted cuz someone said they couldnt get the sirius feed. dont think there's video
Lets just say I attended until 85 shows tended to take precendent back then
hey "Buckaroo (Buck Mulligan)" and others this is the link to the site you want to go for the second set--they are streaming the Sirius simulcast feed
http://www.mogulus.com/davidaron
I have it going out from my computer (through the headphone output) into a stereo receiver and speaker set-up so it's quite a bit better quality and enjoyable...
there is also fun but fast and very furious chatting happening...
I streaming from Serius.
The guys talking are pretty lame.
Guy made a reference to Board postings regarding Warren.
Whatever.
Lambert is definitely a home town annoucer hes never going to be overly critical
that was Branford & I thought he made some excellent points, great insight

Warren and Bobby are singing it.

Never understood why they shelved passenger I always loved it

BTW did anyone else know Mickey did the drum sequence for the Mirage Volcano thing
This space is pretty deep right now!
anyone want a hit?
Drumz
wow
lift off!!
One of the most exciting highlights of the volcano is its hypnotic music score. Hart, the legendary Grateful Dead drummer, and Indian music composer Zakir Hussain worked together to create and perform a soundtrack exclusively for the volcano.
During the composing process, the two studied legends, myths and history about volcanoes. As a result, they incorporated instruments from around the world. The musical masterpiece infuses chants, percussion and other tribal elements.
“Zakir and I studied the science of volcanoes,” Hart explained. “We took our time, found out what they should sound like, what they shouldn’t be like, and got the spirit of the volcano.”
For these composers, the importance of music stems from a deeper, sacred level. The Mirage ignites the Strip’s new flame.
“It’s about spirituality,” Hart emphasized. “Volcanoes are scary, but they also appeal to the spirit world. We tried to get that spiritual content to it.”
He continued: “Music is invisible, it’s mysterious and it has innate, inert energies that we have yet to explore. That’s what music does, that’s what it’ll always do.”
In addition to the intense music score, the volcano’s sound recordings come from actual eruptions. The volcano’s state-of-the-art sound sonic sound system allows the audience to actually feel the rumble.
“We have the greatest sound system around this beautiful lagoon,” Hart said. “Without this delivery system, [it] could not have been possible.”
What a great space!
don't need any fire tossers now....got our own shit
mickey did the mirage volcano? what a country!

Yeah thx Trob and also a big thanks to Jackstraw from Wichita for posting the setlist!
Appreciate that info in the poopstorm of endless drivel and forecasting that generally populates these threads...
I mean I don't care if you think Chimenti should get a hair weave, or that a cover of "London Burning" would be perfect...
Just the facts, Man !!
So thanks again for the meat and potatoes.
Troop, when I said it was a "bookend", I was thinking post-GD. I know they played it 1st set in the '72-'73 era. And I was there at Alpine in '89. I think Phil, and this is only my opinion, has assigned certain attributes (spiritual or otherwise) to certain songs; maybe he always felt that way about them, but since PL&F, or maybe since Jerry's death, he's solidified those feelings and has taken a stronger stance with them. He still isn't uncompromising, though; an example being his 7-song 1st sets for a while there.
Maybe one of the PL&F aficionados can tell us if Box of Rain has come before the very end of those shows.
they started the last show of the tour with the music never stops..and ended it with what a long time to be gone and a short time to be there..

anyone have it for the other sirius broadcasts,
Jackstraw from WVA - As you read this on Sunday morning, know that the stars aligned last night about just after midnight (Dire Wolfish) as my wife hijacked me into bed for a session to be remembered - XM in the bedroom but no chat - so I missed your shout-outs but was up there in spirit, no Cialis necessary thanks to God. The Asian persuassions rocks my boat, bro. Stay tuned. Remember Tony Lukes, tank on. Philly was quite the scene! Mr. Dean
Oh Zeno, post GD. HAH-HA...Yea, love Madison 73's Box....
Awesome mega-upload sound quality is outrageous - I have been BLASTING IT around the basement all morning - even my deadhead dogs are dancing in the aisles right now!
TAPER ROB - You have made this tour one to remember. A big Philly Hug for you, bro.
And to all the other tapers out there who posted on "the archive" - you are blessed souls.
Thanks for recommending the mega-upload Adam, it was looking a little sketchy to me until I saw your approval.

YOU ROCK~ BROTHER
*****PLEEEEEZE GUYS~ BRING US MORE MAGIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!********** possibly ONE in phlorida, where a disabled old man can make~ TOUR WAS OFF THE HOOK
TOP ~ BOTTOM THANKS Y'ALL
Back from the show- Well, the Doobies and Allman's were good- but the boys disappointed... very out of synch often, very uncomfortable moments where they just couldn't find the pocket and the energy rushed out of the crowd each time- they just never got it going long enough for us to really trust them. Many folks were falling asleep during their sets. The few highlights were not enough to save this very awkward show. I would've been pissed if I hadn't already enjoyed 3 hours of tight bands prior to these sets. I've been going to shows for 26 years and was sober- and hoping for the best after the previous few setlists I saw. Warren was too good for these guys last night- even Phil- especially Phil, was off beat many times and trying to force awkward jam/groove changes that were just wrong- and after way too long trying to figure out what the hell they were doing Warren would finally pull them out of the mess with 20-30 seconds of bliss, only for the whole mess to happen again and again. Yuck.
440 posts and we finally get a review ! Cheers !
Northwest Michael and wife backstage at the Gorge 5/16 enjoying an Ice cold tasty, the sunset, and our 12 year anniversary!
ABB was rockin during this photo : )
Yeah- sorry for the bummer of a review- i know I didn't go into much detail- here are a few random thoughts:
Music never stopped- weak- very tepid rendition
Loose Lucy- very tight and fun
Crazy fingers- aweful- Bobby's rig was feeding back most of the tune and the rest of the band was just biding time until he could figure it out- which he didn't
Dark star v1- very nice, too short- felt like they were trying to make up for the horrible crazy fingers- and then just an odd turn into Dire wolf- which was very fun and great to hear- even with 40,000 of us singing Bobby the forgotten lyrics.
Tom thumb, Mystic, Women- mailed 'em in- weak tom thumb, unfulfilled mystic, standard women are smarter and then set break- sure was hoping they would rectify things for set 2
Passenger- hot version- things might be turning around after a halftime huddle
Hell in a handbasket- pretty weak after a powerful turn-on-the-dime transition from passenger
Althea- 'nuff said (Bobby just can't figure out what the heck tone he used to use for this one and it was sloooow and boring as hell)
Eyes- ah, here we go- a B grade rendition, better toward the end, a very odd jam change that went into a really cool place for a very short time and then
Rush limbaugh techno jam- been there, done that how many times now? And it wasn't even a good version of the "lip-synched drums"- Billy looked bored
Real drums- the highlight of the show- huge AND large
Space- pretty decent space but dragged on way too long after a while with not much new ground (or space) covered
Days- very nice volume swells and slide textures- some nice dynamics and powerful moments, but with Bobby singing it the tune never really fulfilled it's potential for nostalgia and lyrical intent, but a nice version despite this
Dark star v2- short, mailed in version with the aweful repeated coda of "diamonds, diamonds..."
Saturday night- another high point, and disappointing at the same time because we knew the show was coming to a close and they really never got it for more than a few moments here and there, and barely at that. Nice triple ending from Bobby- where was that energy the rest of the night?
Box- very nice version with Phil's new ending- "such a long time to be... to be... to be..." (no "there")
And then? Where are the other two tunes they got down in CA after much better setlists and performances? WTF?! Just Mickey gushing about the tour and "this is the last stop"- so PULL OUT THE STOPS! I felt disenfranchised. The boys were just plain "off" for most of the show. except for warren- tha man is amazing- after ripping it for 90+ minutes with the Allmans her was really the only Dead player to really be there with the energy required and the chops to pull off a BIG show in an epic venue. It was actually kind of sad- many fathers and sons there- with embarrassed fathers and bored looking sons. Many old heads (the ones who weren't too drunk and passed out on the grass) were looking dismayed and very much not into it. Younger folks who were attitude-adjusted seemed to dig it though. So I finally understand the old joke- "what does the deadhead say when the acid wears off? "What's that horrible music?"...
It's a shame really- because the tunes are great- and the sound was awesome- they just had to play the frigging tunes half-way decent and find the groove- they seemed old and half-assed if you ask me, which you didn't, but them's my 2 cents
The Doobies were very fun and rocked hard- they had a blast playing a big venue again even though the crowd resisted repeated attempts at sing alongs. Really nice to hear great harmonies and I was surprised how hard they rocked out.
Allmans- great Mountain Jam opener, and they blew the place up with Elizabeth Reed to close- they even had an onstage meeting debating an encore and decided they couldn't top that so the quite while they were ahead. Warren was a bit laid back and let derek really take a lot of the leads and Derek was awesome- the kid can really play.
Then the Dead- after sunset- big vibe of expectation, and the first few notes of Music Never Stopped- great sentiment- but it was like driving on a flat tire.
But hey- $58 for 2 good bands and one almost good, formerly great band, a hike on the way over and the way back, and great company with a long time friend- I'm ok with that.
I learned a long time ago that some shows rock and some don't- so they were just doing what they do. It just happened to be my only show of the tour. Oh well
OK here goes...
The day was stunning weather wise as we predicted. All well getting inside. We made it in about halfway thru the DB and they were good. Rockin China Grove, Blackwater etc.. nice start to the day. ABB just falt out smoked. THey did that the last time they opened for the Dead here as well. THey really throw down. The music was well... just exactly perfect....
So we get to the Deads set and MNS was a good opener. I immeadiately remembered that they opened the tour with this one so found it appropriate to open the final show with it and being at the gorge an all perfect.
Didn't think anything was off a this point. Seemd a bit rough, but first song, dialing in the soundsystem etc...
To me the whole first set was strong. Loose Lucy was fun and great way to kick off the festivities.
THis song felt appropriate for the last show as I was feeling the band was saying thank you.. for real good tour ; )
Crazy Fingers was jammed nicely and things seemed very promising. the whammo! Darkstar.. This really through me for a loop. WAY too early for me and though played well. I just had in my head that DS shouldn't be treated as a first set diddy. It's exploratory dammit.. Almost blasphemy to me to play it third. I know I know they were going early to envelope the show with it but it just didn't make sense to me... whatever.. lol
Dire Wolf, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Into The Mystic, Woman Smarter.. were all pretty rippin, well played Tom thumb was a highlught to me. brought me right back to mid 80's diggin phil days. Very happy to hear. Mystic was amazing. very powerful, truly a gem in the first set. Women was cool and played well....So the first set gave the night some promise and I think everybodys head was good then..
Set 2...
Passenger was great. they always play ths well and the Q always played it well. No suprises, straight ahead rock... Then THings to me started to fall apart quickly... though some friends absolutley loved this set, I kind of agree with pinnman here... from my persective Hell in a Bucket started off a bit rough then they pulled it together then it just fell apart. It seemed like the music was carreening out of control and the boys just couldn't hang on... it seemed out of synch and bizzare. Cuoldn't quite put my fingr on it but Hell just petered out. The rest of the set seemd to take on that whole petered out vibe. Not sure if they were just giving up or tired or gave way to much down south and didn't have much steam left.. not sure... Althea was not that great, and I think the tune needs more work before they bring it out again.
Eyes of the world seemd to salvage the rough 2nd set start and I actually though that was the song of the night. Very well played. Warren sounded beautiful and I was almost in tears. I sing that song to my boys so was thinking about them.... the jam s were good here. THen drums... after listening to everynote of the tour I knew what was coming and they were fab... Space was ok and I felt maybe thru Eyes they had gained some momentum back. Whell would have been perfect... but no... Days Between.. Don't get me wrong. I love this song. And I love listenong to it on CD's.. but live i person it is really slow and it was nice but really almost depressing... the whole show grinded to a halt.. I mean people were starting to leave..
Darkstar v2 wasn't really a suprise.. we knew it was coming.. then OMSN.. I was like huh? thats it? especially after some of the killer shows they have played... OMSN was painful to me... then Bob kept dragging it on and on and on.. lol... BOx of Rain. one of my fav GD tunes was great but to little to late to save the 2nd set..
It seemd they really could have doneit a bit differently but whatever.. Im not writing the setliset! I mean a Playing in the Band in there .. a Wheel.. Gimme Some lovin to pick up the energy.. but no... we get a depressing Days, predictab;e DS and and overplayed and predictable OMSN...
I don't mean to sound harsh and these guys are heros to me. I've been on the bus a long time. I hope they keep going. They have what iot takes.. I say the band is set. I like Warren and Jeff is killer.. I think they just gave it all for the home crowd in SF and LA... 110%... Not much left for the gorge. But as you all know in Deadom... Sometimes you get the gold and sometimes you don't. haha.. Overall it had some gratmoments... strong 1st set. Eyes of the wWorld... etc.. and in retrospect listenng to the discs will show it in a better light.. I can zone on Days Between in my living room and dig it.. Heres hopin for a fall tour! I lift my pint to them and toast to all here who are bound to cover just a ilttle more ground.. peace... michael
more pics coming
>>it seemed out of synch and bizzare.
^That's probably why I enjoyed it.
The more bizarre the better
Too tired to write a full detailed review--here are a few thoughts
Highlights:
The opening jam into MSN
Crazy Fingers
Both halves of Dark Star
Eyes
Days Between ( I've never been a fan of this song, but I thought Bob really nailed some of the lyrics and really won me over)
Drums/space
Hell in a bucket (Hadn't heard this for a long and really enjoyed it)
Lowlights:
Loose Lucy (it's just a dull song)
Althea (Warren sings it slowed down and it drags the song out too long--boring)
Women are smarter (fun to dance to but unremarkable)
Box ( I thought Phil vocals were off and it just wasn't a very stimulating rendition)
I thought the Allmans kicked serious ass! Really great set from the ABB
Other than that I had a great fucking time seeing many old friends, meeting new friends, drinking, dancing, smoking and dropping. It was just what I needed on multiple levels. So, in general it was a perfect weekend. The Dead can still stimulate the enviroment that I enjoy. So the music isn't always perfect--was it ever?
Thank you, The Dead!
Love you guys!
>>> I learned a long time ago that some shows rock and some don't- so they were just doing what they do. <<<
Exactly. And sometimes when they're searching for the sound, they may not find exactly what they're looking for. But to experience the searching with them is always good in some way.
I was chilling on the hill the whole night, soaking in the sunset, twilight and the stars. A slower show was perfect for the occasion. this show wasnt for the kids who need to bounce all the time but for those who really listen this was musically great.
the biggest difference I heard in this show was they turned warren loose a little bit, his tone was course... musta been the ABB groove still hanging on a bit. Reminded me a lot of the Q.
Highlights of the first set were Crazy Fingers, Tom Thumb and Into the Mystic were in the right place at the right time.
Passenger got us all moving in the second set, Bucket was OK. Althea through to the end we just sat back on the hill and tripped through it. Im loving Chimenti these days and the Althea and Eyes will be on my personal playlist for a long time.
I always love days between and for the mellow vibe of the people I was aroud, everyone loved it. The space was long... but who was going anywhere, best drums/space I heard on the tour.
Phils voice broke during Box of Rain and it reminded me that he is in fact a mortal... they all are. We are very luck they want to be playing through retirement age.
FALL TOUR PLEASE.
So Dawn Pete and I our Saturday started off with our plane flight from Santa Rosa, ca being cancelled and we had to drive an hour and half to Oakland and barely made our flight.... We arrived in Seattle at 2:10 and Keirstin picked us up in the RV. Well 2 1/2 hour later we arrived at the Gorge and get Vip Parking and walk in. We missed the Doobie Brothers but get to our seats just as the Allmans are finishing their 1st song. Great Allman brothers show!!! I went last Tuesday In Oakland and thought Derek was on fire for this show. Much more interplay between Warren and Derek. Again great Allman show even though the crowd was hot from the Sun and not paying attention. Where can I get a copy?
Ok whoever said his show was rough and not that good must have been on the Lawn. We were 10th row center and danced and rocked hard. The local crowd was very mellow around us but we San Fran folks showed them how to boogie down hard. I Thought the show was the best of the tour. I've seen he Grateful dead over 150 times before Jerry died and this show restored my faith in the Dead family.
????
Did I miss something?
>>Highlights of the first set were Crazy Fingers, Tom Thumb and Into the Mystic were in the right place at the right time.<<
That's how the Sirius broadcast came across to me, too. Passenger, Days Between, and Dark Star v2 seemed to be the solid parts of the 2nd set, but I can definitely understand why folks who were actually there could be disappointed with Days Between as both a song selection and the vibe. Dropping something like that after a barn-burner of a set makes sense, but segueing from space is a long, long descent. That's just too much dark glop.
The day was spectacular. Clear and sunny and it seemed that every turn on the road to the Gorge brought a new vista or a new view of a snow cap mountain. The amphitheater itself is impressive to say the least. Despite the expense of the show and the venue having its hand in my pocket for everything short of a place to pee the hospitality was sweet and I felt privileged to be there.
This was a family affair for me, and the venue was the deciding factor for my wife and I to bring our three young children and we drove up from Portland on Friday.
It was unbelievably gratifying to bring my kids to their first "Dead" show and share a slice of my crazzzy side with them on an experiential level. Even though the Dead did not deliver an over the top show that so many other venues witnessed for what I was seeking it was a perfect experience.
The vibe was back.. we had 5 seats in the 14th row and the mellow crowd and show made for a great experience. I am grateful to all the heads who grooved with my kids -- the glowstick lady, the balloon man, Cassie the Dinosaur and our neighbors --the vibe and what makes me keeping coming to these shows (as much as the music) was the connection.
Identifying constellations in the night sky with my 9 year old while the Dead played space --what a soundtrack--what a gift.
God bless the Dead for giving us a time and place to keep sharing this.
Phil was dialed in all the time. Eyes of the world was his best run of the night --Tom Thumbs (1st of tour) was strong. Women Smarter was the kids highlight. Passenger>Bucket was great as was the Saturday night closer. Message to BOB --Days Between-- I can wait many days between when I want to hear YOU sing that song. Please. Bob --give up the ballards --you guys need to polish the vocals. the music was great. But the vocals were awful to real awful a lot of the night. And what is up with no guest appearances when you have the Allman Bros and Doobies in the house?????
With my kids sleeping by the end of the show I got to sing loudly
What do you want me to do to watch for you
while you are sleeping?
Well , please don't be surprised if you find me dreaming too...
thanks Phil -zone.
I was there and had a blast, but this place is not easy to get to. We stayed at a hell hole of a hotel in Quincy called the Sundowner for $125 a night. Should have camped, would have been cleaner..but this was a last minute trip and the only room we could find. Flew to Portland from Oakland and our buddies picked us up and we drove straight there. It took from 3:30 till about 8 w only a few quick stops. The place is beautiful, but was pretty toasty on the hillside, 85 or so I would guess. I heard it gets much hotter in the summer. The views of course were magical.
As noted, the Doobs were surprisingly rocking and played well. The Allmans played well, but it felt like they just ended, no encore and the crowd didn't even seem to care, which I thought was strange, but I think the heat was getting to folks. After they packed up, you could see the buses leaving, so we knew this wasn't going to be the Bros/Dead jam fest as some had hoped for.
Finally at sunset the Dead came out. The 1st set and start of the 2nd were pretty good, but we had been hanging the whole day in the sun and I think everyone was looking for a little more pop to keep us dancing into the evening. Slowed down versions of Women and Althea along with the scary Rush Limbaugh space into the very sleepy Days between, Dark Star, Sat Night had many folks sitting and even laying down in the grass. Never saw so few folks dancing at a "Dead Show" (although more than were dancing during the Allmans.) I think everyone was expecting something a little more rocking to cap off what was otherwise a beautiful, if not over the top, day at the Gorge. Ironic thing is that I chose to blow off Thursday Shoreline since we had already made this plan. My wife was a real trooper this weekend, but in the end as we pulled into the driveway, she said the Gorge was great, but maybe we should have just gone to the two Shoreline shows instead. Oh well, half the fun is the adventure of it all and we had been to Shoreline so many times, a road trip to a new place sounded like fun, and it was, but the show was a bit of a let down over all...
>>definitely understand why folks who were actually there could be disappointed with Days Between as both a song selection and the vibe. Dropping something like that after a barn-burner of a set makes sense, but segueing from space is a long, long descent. That's just too much dark glop.<<
I agree w/ this.. not the best choice... Don't get me wrong.. I love Days Between.. but after the long space.. which was great.. A Gimme Some Lovin or Wheel would have really turned this gig from a good show to possible great show IMHO..
Hate to say it but I agree with most of Pinman's reviews too. Although I thought Hell in a Bucket was a highlight, not because it was perfect, but because it was interesting (like watching the tightrope walkers' balance wobble).
I'd been listening to the LA show on the drive to the Gorge and expected that sort of tight barn-burner for another Saturday show. That was out the window halfway through the first set. I thought Dark Star was kinda boring despite some worthwhile jams. I thought it was funny that the energy in the crowd picked up noticably when they started Dire Wolf, and everyone around me perked up and started dancing.
The second set had it's moments, but just didn't have any real Flow to it. Big songs, played adequetly. But it didn't all come together in any cohesive way.
I really like the "techno drums" segment. Even if it's been replayed many times. It has enough structure and repeatability to it that it deserves a name, IMO.
Days Between was interesting too. I enjoyed Weir's vocal delivery, but at this point I was just bored. I hate to say it. I was tired, sunburned, and just couldn't wait for the show to end. I was hoping they'd pull a rabbit out of their hat (maybe an encore like the two they did at Shoreline), but when Box of Rain started I just sighed. Oh well. It was a fun weekend anyway.
The one saving grace, for me, was the quality of sound in the ampitheater. Perfect!! And that was worth the price of admission just by itself: hearing the Core Four (Phil especially) doing their thing on a crystaline clear sound system at maximum volume in a very large 'room' full of Deadheads, even if the music played was lacking something. In that regard this felt like a good old Grateful Dead concert, minus Jerry, but with a wonderfully mellow PNW crowd that I consider another family in a way.
Left same thoughts in Other Suff thread - I flew from Philly Friday eve to SLC and then to Spokane and then met up with buddies at the Crescent Bar condos in Qunicy mid day Saturday - certainly was a trek and the middle of no where..and this only added to the intrigue (and relief on arrival). We got to the Gorge (my first time) around 6pm and we mobbed by those looking for tickets, seeling our few extras for a bit under face. We headed right in and found a spot near the top of the hill (and this truly is a hill) and settled in - the crowd was older and seemed heavy on ABB fans but obviously a lot of overlap - everyone seemed well-behaved, although I saw a few patrons get upset when some tried to boogie during ABB (less of an issue with Dead set). By the time the Dead had started, the temperature had dropped from a balmy 85 to a cool 55 or so by there was never a threat of rain and was quite comfortable. The sound I felt improveas the night went on (was near the top, left of center)and the venue was really cool - however, a bear when it comes to finding your friends once the sun goes down as navigating that hill is a struggle even with lights on.
The show itself served a s a nice complement to the 2 Philly shows I saw - not as upbeat but actually felt was tighter/better played (no clear flubs like the beginning of Hard To Handle 5/1). The songs seemed fresh to me and really enjoyed the "comfortable" pacing of the first set (although have never been a face of Tom Thumb's Blues...sorry Mr Lesh) - Bobby's voice sounded solid, as was his phrasing and nothing seemed sluggish - Mystic was solid and Man Smart was a perfect set ender and was well received.
I read a lot of criticism of the second set, especially about it losing steam during Days Between but found this stretch of music somehere between enchanting, spellbinbding and inebriating - suspect many of those leaving the show then were ABB fans. That said, Passenger and Eyes rocked early in the second set and most seemed to enjoy One More Saturday Night.
Overall, get the sense as has been suggested, that the more they play, the better they will sound - does not guarantee a great show every night, nor the setlist we desire every night, but does allow for the intigue and promise of a moment or two every night that we can take home and savour (independant of the cost of the ticket). For me, I got alot more than just that in Phily for 2 and the Gorge as for the first time in a while, the wonderful scene around the show and my friends and fellow Zoners with me complemented the music and did not need to make excuses for it, as was the case in years gone by.

If this were true, the same must then be said for the decision to descend into DS>Wharf Rat>DS after the long space at the LA Forum, but, no one to my knowledge has claimed such on these boards.
My suspicion is that there is an "anti-days between" bias being played out here, since there is evidence on this board of folks who are free of any "anti-days between" bias finding this Song perfectly placed.
Don't get me wrong, I'll be the first to admit my own Anti "BOB singing Days Between" Bias, but I'm currently undergoing voluntary FLAC therapy to treat it.
No anti-Days Between bias here. Not a bit. Above, I meant to imply I enjoyed it as I was listening to the broadcast, but it doesn't surprise me that the people there might need something else in that moment. Dark Star crackles with energy, or at least the essence of that song is crackling with energy...a cerebral [and sometimes] somatic energy. Days Between, at least for me, is an emotional drain. After a deep space, or mellowish set, I'm prepared for the cerebral. It's an energy giver. Unless the prologue is particularly well done, after space, I'm not prepared to be drained any further. I'm anemic at that point. It's all about context, and I think they miswrote the act in The Gorge play.
Fair Enough
I definately don't have any Days Between bias here either. I actually thought Bob sang it pretty good... Placement was the issue for me... a space>wheel>days or space>OtherOne>Days etc.. would have been amazing...
i used to have a days issue, but i loved it here. missed a lot of the drums/space. Had been on a terrace on the lawn with family for most of the show. As soon as Eyes started, I used my ticket to get down to the seated area. became one with the music as I moved and grooved on the concourse walkway behind the fence on warren's side. sound was crystal clear, and I loved every second. Used my stub to get to the aisle of the 30th row for the start of drums. watched, and listened....and had to pee from all the water consumed during the hot day! Usually, I dance during drums. This time, I went in search of a HoneyBucket. or whatever the urinals are called. finally found the village....took forever! got back to the family terrace and space was still going?!?!? Days was perfect here, I felt. but only because I'd missed most of thr the D/S. I got to chill and stare up at the stars. What really sucked the life out of the set, I felt, was the OMSN.
Other than that, I agree with most of what's been said.
TMNS was a great way to open....mosquitos on the river, fish were rising up like birds.....
Loose Lucy-usually not a fan, but the placement was perfect and I was feelin it
Crazy Fingers-the electricity in the air grew 100 fold as this one started up. fun fun under the setting washington sun.
Dark Star-for real? I had just written in my setlist to the effect of "nightfall" And then they play this.....perfect placement. i need to listen to it again to really evaluate it.
dire wolf was a rockin good time...got everyone in synch, except bobby, who couldn't avoid a fuck-up free first set. didn't matter though, cause all were having fun with it.
into the mystic. along with eyes, my favorite of the night. right before it started, i turned to my girlfriend and said how cool it would be if they played it....and they did. a moment i will never forget.
women r smart...might have been overthinkin' it a little, but I was seeing a theme/story being played out in the music, and I was loving it. everybody was up and moving and a good clap almost got goin......
wasn't too impressed with the passenger or bucket. i think phil's band does a much more powerful passenger.
hell and althea were ok, but they felt kinda forced....
box was a beautiful encore.
It is simply unethical that on a yearly basis that Phil/Bob/Dead/ABB/Young/Phish(I know, but I'm going for the venue in Aug.)/Etc. do not play the Gorge for multiple nights.
This must end!!!
Whoever has Phil's ear needs to work him over to do regular runs.
Last time P&F played 2 days at the Gorge (with Dylan and String Cheese) there place didn't sell out the first day and was virtually empty the second day. That's why they don't play there at all anymore. They didn't even sell out the place in Snoqualmie a few years ago with the quintet that was only 30 minutes from downtown Seattle. Bobby plays the Showbox because he doesn't mind a small venue, but Phil is too big for his britches and won't stoop that low up here- even though he digs that shithole in portland for some reason.
Having been at the show and enjoyed most of it at the time.. (The Dead's Set) I have to say that listening to the aud and sbd recordings in a more controlled environment ( my truck and car) with no show distractions like where I was viewing and hearing the show, company I was with, people around me, mindset at the time etc... I have to say it translates a lot better. It's funny how any given moment in time there are so many filters that block us from where we want to be. Being at the show live I felt it was dragging a bit, was starting to get cold and felt dehydrated and was distracted by all of this. AND there is always the big vacuum left by Garcia not being in the room that always lingers whenever I see a version of this band.
That said, I have spent time after the fact listening to the show and have really grown to love the performance. The first set has some real jewels and the playing was really really good. Some of the 1st set inspiring moments for me are the Crazy Fingers>Dark Star.. At the time and still now the DS feels out of place but it makes sense to me when you arrive at the 2nd verse in set 2. Beautiful reading of both pieces.
Tom Thumbs Blues and Mystic sound great to me as well...
The real kicker is set 2... Passenger>Hell in a Bucket are strong but the real stuff starts after Althea for me.. Eyes>Rythym Devils>Drums>Space>Days Between> Darkstar... is the heart... and its a big one... god a friggin gift that at the time although appreciated has now really had yet another profound effect on my life. Damn they did it again to me : ).. A lot of this is subjective and of course the recipents circumstances while experiencing this music really plays a huge role. My feelings during the actual performance has been amplified through revisiting.
Eyes has always been a great piece for me. And since I've had children it has always been a song I have pointed out to them growing up and have played and sang it to them over the years.. and as many of thier songs do, Eyes has revealed new personal meanings to me as I changed and grew... I was very moved that night despite the distractions of the reading of Eyes. I teared up thinking of my beautiful boys and how much I love them... drums and space were awesome but the choice of Days Between really bugged me at the time. I felt the energy drain and it just seemed loong and cumbersome, darkstar was predictable and well... that pretty much was it for me that night...
Thank goodness for recordings... after revisiting the show Days Between was exactly perfect.. Maybe not so much seeing it live after a long drums space sequence... but for concept and idea flow within a set it is outstanding. Weir handles the lyrics really well in this rendition and it is beautifully played with a lot of care. A continuing commentary on our human condition and just how amazing our time is here that started with Eyes of the World.
"There were days
and there were days
and there were days between
polished like a golden bowl
the finest ever seen
Hearts of Summer held in trust
still tender, young and green
left on shelves collecting dust
not knowing what they mean
valentines of flesh and blood
as soft as velveteen
hoping love would not forsake
the days that lie between lie between"
After listening to this sequence a few times I swear I am even closer, more finely focused and overwhelmingly appreciative of what I have.. the love I have for my boys has been amplified and aligned properly...
Darkstar(v2) we zoom back out and look at the big picture.. again perfect setlist placement... All of this performed very well. Reminds me of Jerrys take on experiencing playing live and seperating his feelings from the performance. At the time may not seem significant but listening back to what went down was.. "crackling with energy".. In a way it is much the same with life.. we can look back zoom in and zoom out and grasp the big picture and understand how we got to where we are..
The Box of Rain encore... just a gentle reminder of the message... perfect..
This show is beautiful and if you dig a little you will find a shining diamond. Maybe not as extravagant a show as MSG, Philly, Cali gigs, BUT sublime, deep, subtle, magical and amazing...
Thank you guys for playing this music always from the heart and giving me once again, though not fully realized at the time.. a long overdue wonderful soul rattling : )
Yeah- funny how they were always better live than on recording- but I agree this show is much better on the recording than it was being there.

Perfect
I think that ultimately what has come up for me is that this band, and any other permutation, is not the Grateful Dead, and I really, really keep wanting it to be- despite my best efforts to quell that desire and expectation. These guys had some nice moments at this show, but it's just a whole different beast now. I must admit, based purely on setlist, that after seeing what they were playing at most other dates on this tour, I was pretty disappointed to get a typical late '80's setlist. I felt sorry for Denver, then got the same up here. I guess I was hoping for a late 60's early 70's Pig-fest like they were getting elsewhere. That material plays to the strengths of this personnel configuration- Warren was built for tunes like Caution/Viola Lee Blues/Golden Road/TOO, etc. But that is probably the one aspect that remains consistent from the original band- inconsistency. This show was a pretty big "air out of the balloon" for me after the amazing Elizabeth Reed to close the ABB's set... but that usually was also true whenever the Grateful Dead played after bands like Santana, ABB, the Who, etc, that just bring a higher intensity level overall. This current band just doesn't elicite the nuances and subtleties required in my mind for a "mellow" setlist. And the envelope filter/wah-wah festival got old real quick, as did Bobby's William Shatner/Paul Harvey vocal delivery on classic Jerry tunes that require that someone really SING. Sorry if I bummed anyone's trip- these are just my own thoughts- but my bus may be heading elsewhere at this point...
To each is own...but I do agree with the fact that Bobby is REALLY tearing the heart out of alot (but not all) Jerry tunes. I dont hate Bobby, its just that he has absolutely NO FEELING when he sings Jerry tunes, and you just HAVE TO have feeling! ITS A MUST!!!
