He's one hard core yak!
My prediction for the 4th song of the night: Oh! Darling Not only does it seem we're getting Abbey Road, but the song placement seems to be jiving too. Come Together - 1st song played on 3/4; Something - 2nd song played on 3/5; Maywell's Silver Hammer - 3rd song played on 3/6. Ya gotta love what the band is doin' ... they're out there having fun!
Lets bring enough ENERGY that PHILLLLLLL wont want to leave!!!!!!!
Wish I could be there!!!!!!! Just listening to Morning dew form the first boston night now, sounds hot!
Furthur, come back to the Pacific NW!!!!!
when i got my ticket at the box office the time schedule for Furthur was as follows:
1st set 7:30-9:00
break 9:00-9:30
2nd set 9:30-11:30
My first Furthur show was at the Oakdale Theater; December 9th maybe? That first mini east coast run.
awesome to see them there again..
have a great show tonight zoners !!
Hey ho, let's go!
Hey ho, let's go!
Pigpen died on March 8th. Here's something I wrote to honor him:
I never knew him
but his name was Ron
by the time I was born
he was already gone
his mark on our world
still lives today
even though its been years
since we last heard him play
with his hands of gold
upon ivory keys
and a voice that made us all
weak in the knees
he gave us the blues and rock n roll
Pigpen McKernan had a lot of soul
Also, Mexicali Blues was written in Middletown, CT. Maybe Furthur will play it for the first time tonight...
Cannot forget Charles Ives and his innovative 'crazy rhythms' , one wack mofo from Danbury!
Terrapin, Let it Grow, and Unbroken Chain are all up for tonight
weather report suite, scarlett....fire somewhere...cold rain snow...my friend....
Can't forget Operator and of course the continuous run of Abbey Road Oh-Darling 4th song.
Iko Iko for Fat Tuesday.
^^made the same prediction about the iko--would be great!
anyone else staying at days in on rt 10?
Is Z-Man going to be there? I want to shake that guy's hand. Besides the live stream he's provided us from the Orpheum, his recordings on Live Music Archive are outstanding.
...
My son's first show without me....Have a really good time Ed!!
Heres wishing you a Cumberland, Terrapin, Wharf Rat, a couple of Pig tunes (2 souls?) and anything else on your wish list.
Talk to ya after the show!!
hell yeah mexicali!! its gonna be a dirty western first set with el paso and cumberland and hopefully a bluesy swampy make you feel like your drowning in the bayou 2nd set for 'pen...god bless!!! two souls in communion both body and miiiiiiind!!!
Since we're due for JACK STRAW and EYES OF THE WORLD, why not just play the entire setlist from the great 1974 Dillon Stadium show!
And Stuart Sockel - I'm also down with hearing The Stranger (2 Souls in Communion) tonight - or any night!
Lots of exclamation points in the air today!

Is there some connection between Furthur and Abbey Road? Is Phil a secret big Beatles fan? Or maybe JK?

Nice looking first set.
Bill Bubba--right. I guess if Furthur was going to pick an album that EVERYONE knows (and loves) from the archives of rock and roll history, Abbey Road would be as good a choice as any.
thanks for posting the stream recording.. sounds real nice, and making me smile :-)
I do think there is some mystic sort of connection however. Maybe I'm overthinking it!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR THE STREAM!!!!
I'd be surprised if they didn't pull out an Iko or Women R Smarter or LTGTR early in 2nd set

KILAUEA...FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN
Short version Pig would have been proud of tonight's show. Before Easy Wind Bob tossed a coin and obviously he lost cause John sang it lol, it was very funny.
Bob did extremely well on Oh! Darling and the end of the set was really good.
I took two Flip vids and will post tomorrow.
Second set was very cool and they did a great job on Hard to handle and th He's Gone was very sweet. The placement of Lovelight did not work in the middle of the set.
The Scarlet> Fire was the best one I have seen them play, wicked.
The high light of the show had to be the ending. I mean the Days was on a totally different level, they RAGED on it, it was the best one I have ever seen and then they jammed out of it for like fours minutes which was AWESOME and then into Eyes? It was incredible.
Loved this version, the entire band was so dialed in both Jeff and John were amazing on it.
Then a rocked out Sugar Magnolia, with a faster tempo brought the house down.
The SSDD was off the hook and then a quick encore cause of curfew but it was smokin' they ripped it up big time.
The love affair continues
Very good, all around. Excellent light show. Good sounds and rare set list.
Damn, I'm starting to think that the band members are reading these forum threads. Most of what was mentioned on here was addressed in the show.
One word sums up this whole night: BEAUTIFUL!
The band played everything so tight last night, it was just way too easy to love it.
Furthur likes Connecticut almost as much as they like San Fran and NYC.
where does oh darling come from?
nice abbey road........those guys are some serious hipsters.......
"Were there some NO2 problems there tonight Vince?"
I was not at the show, but I can assume there was.
That stuff is a complete joke, it eats away your brain and draws a crowd of people that are simply not there for the music.
It can really dampen your experience once some nitrous high dreadlocked-gangster is talking or looking like they're about to fall to the ground right beside you.
But more importantly, this show looks amazing! How was the Foolish Heart?
>>>>but I can assume there was.
Why?
this show was a curveball. i enjoyed it, although i did not enjoy the sound in different spots inside the venue..seemed to be pinging off the walls and bouncing around too much..i finally found a decent spot along the main concourse midway through the 2nd set, got to hang with the spinners for a minute in the tunnel hehehe...good setlist, keeping a lot of big guns like terrapin wharf unbroken for NY obviously...i was really digging this song selection although it did not give the first set the ability to flow
vince, the foolish was shaky..john was fumbling with the lyrics and even repeated the leap from ledges high and wild but the jam in it was great..i give JK credit for even spearheading that tune because there is a lot that goes into it on his part
Saw two nights in Boston and was stoked, beautiful energy. After reading these posts I got the chills, love that feeling. Light it up boys!!!!
the setlist looks off the hook. They always play foolish heart once a tour and they NEVER play it anywhere outside of New England (dammit) oh well.
How did it sound?
Foolish Heart rocked
I can never get enough of that sound, and couldn't believe it when the riff started it up
They did an extra round of the chorus or verse at the end (I forget which) which was cool, I wanted more, and then, Boom!, hard stop, encore.
Many highlights, especially this and Eyes; always a great Lovelight here too, very spiritual;
He's Gone was super poignant, people were grinning when they hit the brakes and started that one up.
also, Wallingford is the shiz. Just down hang up on the sides, where the sound does blow
Let I forget:
Dark Holler!
Great show folks, last year on 3/8 they played R&C, Scarlet>Fire, and Days Between as well. This shows looks to be a more fitting tribute to the Pig.
Foolish Heart - Charlotte, NC - first of 3 in 1 tour in 16 days...
eddie haze - they added an extra bridge at the end & the ending itself was strange... they'll do it in Hampton as well
How about them ending the first set with that quick "Help On The Way" riff. Maybe they're hinting at what they'll open up with in NYC...
I will have to listen to it again. What John did was reminiscent of the Foolish Heart from 3/19/90 where after the jam Jerry came back and sang the final verse, he tried to pull it off but it was just a slight goof, over all this was a solid and jamming version.
I thought the sound was great in the sb area I mean for the second set it was loud and you could hear every one really well and the the drums came through perfectly.
The other thing to not is except for the airport search coming in, this place is so loose to move around freely . I mean they let us all dance in the wide aisle between the front and back sections and during the break I walked right up to teh 7th row to see Lyn and Bob.
You can't complain about that although once the music started the aisle to eh stage were packed like sardines. I think it was a drag for peeps who had their seats up there lol.
As for the music the 1/2 Step was rock solid, Easy Wind was very good, Dark Hallow was perfect sing along and Rueben & Cherise was awesome. I think they have not played that since Utica?
I am uploading two vids to you tube right now and will post later.
Right
It is clearly a goof to go back to the bridge, but they just got it off hard at the end.
I agree with Ted's characterization of the place.
Saw my first Phil & Friends day before Thanksgiving 2003. Almost went to DSO for the first time instead, and then, d'oh, it hit me!
Big New Orleans theme, with the Reuben and the JBGoode. Mardi Gras, you know. Props to some of the spinners in masquerade!
Looking forward to the videos Ted. Thanks!!!
Here is Operator
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HspSInqGvxM
Just awesome how these shows are available on archive.org the day after! Thanks Tapers! I can't make any shows this tour and am in a hotel on a business trip- enjoying last night's show right now!
the sound is good on last nights show
the recordist did a great job !
Nice Ted
rocking to Operator right now
Ted, thank you for your reviews. I can pretty much say ditto without watching and listening all over again which at this point my tired mommy brain can't quite take. I wish I could record my thoughts during the show.... then I might just have an actual show review of my own... until then thanks to all of you for yours!
I did lift off during the Scarlet Fire jams! Yay!!!
See you @ RCMH
Thanks Eddie here is the Hard to Handle and from teh 7th row lol
That place was so loose last night.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajgHA55OwLM
The place was loose but the band was tight. They are definitely exceeding expectations (yeah yeah I know what do they owe me... or no expectations), but whatever, they are doing it. The band is pretty hot and Joe Russo is nailing it.
Who is it in the band that likes Connecticut so much? They always give us GREAT shows, even dating back to the Grateful Dead's shows at Dillon Stadium and Yale Bowl.
These are just a few of the classic songs that were first played live in CT:
"Mr. Charlie"
"Sugaree"
"Half Step"
ah, ted... we were neighbors when you made it down low... thanks for the link.
I thought Furthur was great at the Oakdale theater the other night. All the players had black tee shirts on. Bobby and Phil and John in jeans too. Phil had an open, button down shirt over his black tee shirt. I heard Mississippi 1/2 step as I was entering the arena, and enjoyed that while we got drinks at the bar. We went in and I was thoroughtly thrilled with Easy Wind, which I've never seen the Dead perform. We had about 20th row on the floor on Phil's side. The sound and the view were excellent. The whole band seemed to be in excellent health this night and really psyched to play for us. The audience seemed to be having a really good time too!
Operator was a real treat too, and it was around then that I was thinking this may be a Pigpen memorial concert. Apparently he passed away in March 1973, possibly on the same date. After Operator I turned to my buddy and said, "This is where they might play the Beatles tune", and within a second or so Bobby started belting out "Oh Darling", the fourth song on Abbey Road and in the same order of this show's setlist. JK ripped it up nicely, and Bobby sang it well too. Phil seemed exceptionally psyched the entire night, and I thought the band were really ON this night, and playing in fine form together. Reuben and Cherise put a big smile on my face: a great JGB tune played and sung well by JK. Never saw the Dead do that one either. I thought they might return to Reuben at some point in the show after the jam at the end that seemed to just keep going…but Dark Hollow grabbed my attention and put another big smile on my face. How does JK make his guitar sound like a pedal steel??? Well we left to go back to the bar during Money for gas…and never made it back in to the theater until the second set, so I missed Foolish Heart, but Oh well, I was with old friends I hadn't seen in five years and we needed to chat a bit!
2nd set: I was really blown away by Hard To Handle and Smokestack Lightnin' back to back, and Spoonful kept that old time groove goin' and I continued to think about Pigpen when next I knew they were playin He's Gone, continuing the remembrance of comrades passed away. Lovelight was another nice surprise of a great night of old classics. Scarlet / Fire was smoking. Phil was really sounding and looking great, using a lot of the frets up high on his bass. It really was a great rendition of that classic pair of tunes. During Days Between, I finally sat down and gave my feet a break. Eyes was a nice surprise, and one of my favorites, no matter how many times I hear them do it. Sugar Magnolia pretty much signaled the end of the set, and while it was performed well, the boys seemed rushed, getting into Sunshine Daydream in what seemed to be record time. We beat the crowds and left during Johhny B. Goode, as my friend did have to get to work the next day, and it was getting late.
I woke up around 6:00 AM and cruised back to Vermont, glad to beat rush hour through Hartford and Springfield!
BT
looks great!
Even after NY and Philly, this show is still surviving as one of the best on this tour!
