Unfortunately Bear has left us though his legacy never will. It will be interesting to see how the set list reflects his impact on us all. RIP Bear.

Look out of any window
any morning, any evening, any day
Maybe the sun is shining
birds are winging or
rain is falling from a heavy sky -
What do you want me to do,
to do for you to see you through?
this is all a dream we dreamed
one afternoon long ago
Walk out of any doorway
feel your way, feel your way
like the day before
Maybe you'll find direction
around some corner
where it's been waiting to meet you -
What do you want me to do,
to watch for you while you're sleeping?
Well please don't be surprised
when you find me dreaming too

Look into any eyes
you find by you, you can see
clear through to another day
I know it's been seen before
through other eyes on other days
while going home --
What do you want me to do,
to do for you to see you through?
It's all a dream we dreamed
one afternoon long ago

Walk into splintered sunlight
Inch your way through dead dreams
to another land
Maybe you're tired and broken
Your tongue is twisted
with words half spoken
and thoughts unclear
What do you want me to do
to do for you to see you through
A box of rain will ease the pain
and love will see you through

Just a box of rain -
wind and water -
Believe it if you need it,
if you don't just pass it on
Sun and shower -
Wind and rain -
in and out the window
like a moth before a flame

It's just a box of rain
I don't know who put it there
Believe it if you need it
or leave it if you dare
But it's just a box of rain
or a ribbon for your hair
Such a long long time to be gone
and a short time to be there

Came upon unfortunate circumstances. Had to off my ticket for the night. A stream would make my night if someone was kind enough this evening.

I would LOVE a stream and I predict an earth-shattering He's Gone that may leave it's own AfterShocks....as did Bear.

(I'm A) Road Runner
Lyrics By: Holland, Dozier, Holland
Music By: Holland, Dozier, Holland
Money, who needs it Let me live a life free and easy Put a toothbrush in my hand Let me be a travelling man I'm a roadrunner baby I'm a road runner baby Any place is my home I'm a road runner baby You look for me and I'll be gone

Well you can love me if you want
But I do declare
When I get restless
I've got to move somewhere

I'm a road runner baby
Just got to keep on keeping on
And I love the life I live
And I'm gonna live the life I love

Don't want no woman
To tie me down
Gotta be free baby
To roam around

All my life it's been like this
If you love me it's your own risk
When the dust hits my shoes
I got the urge to move

I'm a road runner baby
Anyplace is my home
And I love the life I live
And I'm gonna live the life I love
Roadrunner baby

This was played a couple of times by the Grateful Dead in 1986, but more frequently by Jerry Garcia with solo bands in the mid-70's and early 80's and by Bob Weir with Kingfish in the mid-70's. It was recently revived by Phil Lesh & Friends in 2002. Note that it's the Motown song done by Junior Walker and the All Stars, not the Bo Diddley song.

This is the version recorded for Garcia's second solo album ("Compliments Of ..."), though not released on the original album.

So what does everyone think about Tuesday. They open the 2nd set with The Medley and then do GD from there on? I was actually checking and the Medley as recorded was only 17 minutes so it will not dominate the set. But boy will that be a show for the ages. The most *first time played since, I would guess their first few shows that they played in the '60s!! It will be interesting. Hope there is a stream during that one!

RIP Owsley

Set I was rather subdued, especially compared to the energy of last night. I found out about Bear less than 5 minutes before the start of the set. Kudos to their professionalism for just doing their thing as they deal gracefully with the vicissitudes of life.

Samson & Delilah OK. Solid, not raging. Not necessarily what you want to hear right off the bat after hearing about the passing of a "family" member.
Queen Jane Slower than it used to be?
After Midnight strong.
7 Hills of Gold Sounds like it could develop in a St. of Circumstancish way. Nothing to write home about as of right now. Of course, anything that keeps Bob Weir from further tinkering with GD classics is a good thing.
Brown-Eyed Women Solid
West LA Fadeaway. Am I wrong, or does Bobby periodically/often wait a couple extra measures in between stanzas? It adds nothing and interrupts the flow you expect from the song.
They Love Each Other Not a barn burner on the best of nights. I guess it was a pretty decent version.
Because Gorgeous!

Set 2: w/ Warren Haynes was very strong.
Blue Sky Great. Lots of good jamming. Good interplay and unison lines between the guitarists.
Roadrunner> Fun, upbeat. Jammed out. Warren Vocals.
Viola Lee Blues(v1)>
Caution> BW Vocals. Would have preferred Warren for a change and it's always such a struggle for Bobby to try to figure out what to say.
Viola Lee Blues(v2)>
Shakedown Street> nice surprise. I'm personally jonesing for Gimme Some Lovin', Dancin in the Streets and Keep on Growing, but this was great.
Viola Lee Blues (v3)
Death Don't Have No Mercy Bathroom break. No need to repeat this with Comes a Time, Sing Me Back Home and lots of fine Jerry Band tunes waiting in the wings.
King Solomon's Marbles (no WH)> very strong. Nice transition into...
Franklin's Tower Solid, and I'm all for having all 3 parts of the suite either together or separately as they've been doing.
Had to leave to catch the train.

That's all I got....

""Am I wrong, or does Bobby periodically/often wait a couple extra measures in between stanzas? ""

He's been known around my circles as "extra measure Bob" for quite a few years now.....

"So what does everyone think about Tuesday."

They'll close the first set with the medley.

Grateful Dead played it twice on the spring '86 tour, 3/21/86 Hampton and 3/31/86 Providence.

Seeing Warren doing Blue Sky is a little bitter sweet for me. Its a tune written by the great Dickey Betts less we forget. And Dickey...IMO got screwed by ABB

I thought I should say this before y'all jump on me. My above statement is not directed against Warren Haynes..maybe he thought of this as a sort of tribute...I dont know. He is a fine singer,& blues guitar artist. The song makes me think of Dickey..which in turn makes me think of how he got screwed. Peace

This was a great show...

Phil gives a short speech in spirit of Owsley illustrating how he was a true member of the Grateful Dead. He the said "I did something I haven't done in a long time: I had STEAK" Owsley used to only eat meat.

Some notes on the show...

Phil shook the floor at moments.

Furthur's arrangement of Samson was great: Bobby plays tambourine and sings the first few verses over a tribal drum groove and nothing else.

I loved Queen Jane Approximately, developed nicely with an awesome solo by John. Jeff took one too if I remember correctly.

John soared on After Midnight... I did notice most people around me on the floor were static; I find it hard not to move during a song like this.

My first time experiencing Bobby's Seven Hills of Gold, they've practiced their vocal harmonies... beautiful unified sound over John's slide.

The energy of set I reached it's highest through Brown Eyed-Woman. John, as usual, presented a flawless version. Jeff and John traded solos and a few amazing moments came from that. During Phils part, "Looks like the old man's, getting old", everyone in the theater burst into celebration more then any Brown Eyed-Woman I've heard with Furthur.

West La-Fadaway was cool as it was a first for me however, like They Love Each Other the songs were fluid but did not take off.

Because, the subsequent Abby Road song for tonight, was beautiful! Again, the harmonies were impressive and the crowd surprisingly quitted down and decided to listen. Thought it was a perfect way to end the set.

long set break and a bunch of awesome conversations were had... With another mic set up everyone was sure Warren was going to sit in however, I did not imagine him to be there for literally the whole second set save King Soloman's Marbles.

John and Warren played well together, but John may have been a little too polite. I may be bias in saying that, as the show went in a direction with Warren being there that I wouldn't prefer to a show without any guests. That said, it was special to see Warren with them for the first time since the last incarnation of the Dead.

Blue Sky was powerful. Viola Lee Blues sequence was wild; every segue was seamless. Bobby seemed to open up on Death Don't... a look in his eyes.

I felt as though Joe Russo internalized a heavy rock sound in the beginning of set II with Warren there. I noticed this during King Soloman's Marbles when it felt John was playing catch up with Joe's playing. His bass drum was almost two loud and anchoring down a high atmosphere, free-flowing song.

Franklin's rolled through and everyone rejoiced; images of all the great moments had with Phil & Friends surfaced from my sub-conscious.

Donor Rap Phil says: "This community means everything to me"... and the band gathered without instruments and microphones were prepared for everyone in the band including Jeff and Joe.

...I may sound a little obnoxious here but I feel obligated.

Many of the people in the audience simply could not handle the Attics... they do not have the capability to listen. There is a lot of space in this song, during the silence between verses people would loudly shout things such as:

"RIPPLE!!"

"ROBERT HUNTER!!!!"

completely arbitrary spurts of words from people who obviously do not think before they speak.

An accpella Attics of My Life is something special... it saddened me to see such disrespect.

There was even a moment when entering the next verse where someone had screamed something and the shout completely discombobulated John and he missed the start of the first lyric, having to creep his way back in the harmony.

It was almost as if they were doing this on purpose.. I know that of course isn't true but on a small scale, it shows how some can be completely unaware of their actions.

The haunting Attics sung last night, the day after Owsley Stanleys death, the eve of Phil Lesh's 72nd birthday... it is a vessel for transcendental experiences. We mustn't forget this... getting drunk and yappin' will only bring you 'round and 'round the same circle.

I hope don't come across as being to harsh but I whole-heartedly feel this to be something that needs to be addressed.

I plan to go to the Nokia Tuesday to try and scalp a ticket.

This was the only show of the run I could catch - one of the great venues & I feel really fortunate to have it so close to home!
And what a show it was.
A couple of highlights:
-I'd never seen the acapella open of 'Sampson' & I think it was awesome... and let me just say to those who don't like hearing Furthur/The Dead mess with Grateful Dead classics, remember the musicians do this to keep it fresh for themselves - not to mess with you. Dylan has caught endless flack for this, and of course, he says that a big inspiration for changing-up his performances was none-other than Jerry Garcia.
-smokin' After Midnight with lots of nods to other tunes in G maj during the jams
-big Brown Eyed Women, "the old man's gettin' on." Nice one, Phil.
-yes, the Because was monumental and brought a hush to the crowd. That alone was worth the ticket... a woman next to me let out a whoop with the first note. I concur!
Long set break - my buddy Tom pointed-out the Warren look-alike on stage was Farmer, Warren's guitar tech... a good omen, yes?
-Blue Sky is one of the most joyous, righteous songs ever written and they nailed it. Good to see Mr Haynes - and yes, MerryRikster, I thought about old Dickey too during this...
-Loved the Roadrunner as it brought me back to college days when The Rhythm Pigeons [Vanderbilt, late 80s] would tear this up at Exit/In. OK, that's kind of an inside reference!
-I love Viola, still the best time machine for conjuring-up the heavy 1968 sound. My favorite - and this section delivered the goods. Bobby brought out his A-game slo-mo lead guitar. He and John were clearly there for Warren, and when you consider how 3-guitar jams are typically cacophonous train wrecks, you gotta appreciate how these three guys worked together.
-KSM was off the hook and the Franklin's did a perfect job of bringing the set to a close.
-Attics was a real gift from the band - something meaningful and heartfelt.
Kudos to Jeff & Joe too- really the best I've seen this band play [though the first night last summer at Coney was pretty special!].
Now on to finding the boards...

Appreciate the reviews! You all have something special to say! I for one didn't get any tickets and not really into going into the City to try and scalp. So I'm closed out! I'm glad the Heads are posting strong so I at least have a sense of what the scene is like at the shoes! Peace

"the eve of Phil Lesh's 72nd birthday"

He'll be 71, let's not age him faster then time already is!

"I hope don't come across as being to harsh...

Not at all. People need to learn to listen, although after 38 years of this I doubt they ever will. I once had a friend say that he couldn't relate to the lyrics in Attics; I just stared at him.

ABB would do an instrumental Franklin's Tower inside of Blue Sky so we sort of had a psudo-sandwich....

Thanks to all who give their open and honest opinions/reviews. Having the abiblity to connect to last night's show for those not in attendance, with both the "celebration" of Bear and the Haynes sit in, is priceless. And yes, I can't stand when people even talk..at all...when the music plays, much less yelling during an unbelievably poignant moment such as Attics. Guess you take the good with the bad. See ya'll in Fairfax and Philly.

I agree with Vincent. An acapella Attics is a rare special treat that was meant to honor Bear. We were privy to a very special moment and there are those who just don't or can't get it, or know when to keep their mouths shut. Some people just can't handle their drugs or liquor and ruin it for others. I don't care who I offend with that comment.

Let the words be yours - for me - my 35th Furthur show, and it was by far the best. Warren brought the energy up and every band member was on their A-game. Mad props to Jeff & Sunshine who deserve WAY more credit than they are getting for their vocal prowess...

Magnificent!

Quick thoughts: At this venue (Best Buy/formerly Nokia), The riser behind the floor in the center in front of the sbd is THE place to hang out to catch the best sound on tour (and sightlines if yer tall enough). And most peeps hangin' there are also there for the same thing. And most peeps work together to keep the babbling interlopers out.

First set was well played and paced, not over the top, just well crafted versions of each song. They Love Each Other was played with the most enthusiasm. Because was a vocal showcase - very lovely.

Rumors abounded re special guests especially with it being Allmans offnight, when Art Farmer showed up to set up Warren's gig there was no doubt. Blue Sky a nice touch. Roadrunner a tour de force, with a funky new time-shifting arrangement so different I didn't know what it was until the vocals. Viola Lee was an utter powerhouse - they took off so intensely and over the top I thought the place was gonna melt down. The jamming shifted tempo's a lot but held completely together. It reminded me of the jam out of Truckin' to open the Sun MSG show - that teased Caution but went into Cumberland. This jam teased Cumby heavily then dropped into Caution. It was again way over the top in energy. By the time they reprised Viola and went into Shakedown then back to Viola they seemed to be back to earth, rockin' out hard but not into the stratosphere. Death Don't was a nice tribute to Bear - this was my 1st Best Buy show so it didn't bother me they'd already done it. King Solomon's was played with a lot of enthusiasm, Warren initially left then came back halfway through. Warren and John did some nice dual leads on the main theme. Franklin's brought the set to a quick conclusion - they had played 4 nights in a row and the 1st 1/2 of the 2nd set was VERY intense, so much so it felt they'd literally burned themselves out. Attics acapella was really nice and interesting - again, this was about the vocals. Joe Russo kept time metronome style. Show ended in plenty of time for me to find monkey on a stick on a pita w/Tahini and fried onions/ peppers/ mushrooms, and enjoy it during my leisurly walk back to GCT.
