it is going to be one hell of a holiday! 70 degrees, clear blue skies. Cant wait for this one.
Any tips regarding the Patriot Center. Was there a shakedown last time? how was the inside in regards to ..... ya know.....
I was there in 2005 it was rather freedom in side college kid aile a tendents and so on. Heard there was a good shakedown last fall however seems like the world will be partying everywhere maybe heat will be everywhere else! (~):-}-
The heat came round and busted me for smiling on a cloud day..... Im calling A masons and LSD encore!
Went in '05, I recall that they had a "beer garden" up on the concourse (a big enclosed area) and that was the only place that you could buy or drink beer. Got there late and don't recall a Shakedown outside but we could have easily missed it. Staying at the Mason Inn this time, walking distance, looking forward to it.
Went last year. Nice venue. Good sound. We were sitting right beside staff, security blowing smoke everywhere. I missing this time for Hampton.
jonezin... see you at the Spaceship!!!! April fools... should be amazing
Went to last years feb show..Due to temps in the 20's and ice in the parking lot it was 2 isles of shakedown..Inside is or was okay no prob..Like that one guy said..place is run by students..so be cool and all should be well.. Seeya on the floor.
I'll be at the spaceship also Ramble..Can't wait for that also!!! :-)
Might jump in the car for Fairfax... you never know when the bug may bite you! Only 5 hours from home.. back in the day driving to Chicagoafter work for a show was no big deal... but I'm getting old
man what a run in NYC.
I hope they left something for us in Virginia on Thursday!! hopefully the festive atmosphere will translate to a funky up tempo dance dance dancin in the streets kinda set
10th row in front of Phillip Chapman Lesh.cant wait for the BOMBSq
Take a look at the set lists from the last night in Boston, Wallingford, and the first NYC show and notice what they haven't played since those nights. And they could easily repeat anything from the first three nights in NYC (Dark Star was played 5 days apart on 3/6 and 3/11). It's going to rock big time.

have PHUN!!
beers @ patriot center?
First show of 6 show run for me. Been salivating. They will be well rested with 2 of the last 3 nights off. And the song store, save for a few missing items off the shelf from Tues, is WIDE OPEN.
Hi. Does anyboby know what time they open up the parking lot? My wife has been making necklaces and wants to try and vend for the first time. I'm assuming we should be there when the lot opens to set up on shakedown. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!
This show has Shakedown written all over it in every way.
Lots are always open as the lots are part of GM student parking...Shakedown last year was the lot right next to the venue...and yes they do sell beer.
thanks for the tips Brett
whats everyone hoping for tonight? I got my fingers crossed for some Viola Lee Blues and Feel Like A Stranger. besides that I am grateful for whatever is played

They played Franklins two shows ago at Best Buy -- but maybe they'll repeat it given it's been a while since Help.
Help>Slip>Alligator opener
Oh, forgot to mention they'll do Sing This Altogether in the first set (probably close the set), as tonight they start doing the sequence of songs from the Stones Satanic Majesties Request album, so Philly you're in store for a treat!
Checked into the Mason Inn, I can see the Patriot Center from my window. Beautiful day down here, ready to go.
Back in the USSR to open the show.
Warning!!!
They have a major sting operation going on in the lot, many undercover police (I suspect University but I'm not sure) dressed like heads busting people. The staging area for processing the folks is right below our hotel window and it is not a pretty sight. Be careful.
HAPPY ST PADDY'S, will one of you cats get phil a cold heineken already ;) much love, enjoy the ride! how bout a dylan tune already, desolation row or masterpiece bobby!
teddym......I'd be surprised if Phil imbibes anything anymore.

doesn't say anything about weed or doses.....lol. Not funny people getting popped. It is Virginia after all, and the word has been out for a long time that this crowd likes to party. Be careful people. Happy St. Patricks day.

5 of the songs so far have "whiskey" in the lyrics...
Big Boss Man is due if they're sticking with the Whiskey theme.
Let's see......Minglewood: couple shots of whiskey, Whiskey in the Jar, Dire Wolf: sat down to my supper, was a bottle of red whiskey; it's St. Patricks Day! Now in second set I'd expect Easy Wind: gotta' find a woman be good to me, won't hide my liquor try to serve me tea
Anyone know what this line is from?
"Well see that girl all dressed in green"
there were a number of songs that they soundchecked but never played live. my thought is that jerry felt a bit of freedom during soundchecks to try stuff out but may not have liked the results enough to do it in front of an audience.

Whiskey is the first time ever played.... I know GD never did it - Although I did have to double check with Deadbase... Only release on that was on So Many Roads as a rehearsal from 2/16/93.
Oh, and Jer & Grisman did release Whiskey on Shady Grove in 93...
Dressed myself in grreeeen, went down unto the sea....
the Dead played whiskey in the jar acoustic w/ Warren Hayes in Denver last year (phil singing)----super great!
and it stoned me
...dad made whiskey and made it well, cost two dollars and burned like hell.
Hand me my old guitar and pass the whiskey 'round
BEW BBM are possible in the 2nd if they are still on the Whiskey theme. And we haven't heard a cryptical yet.
new potato?
New Potato??... No Potato, they did it Tuesday just before the medley!!
I stand corrected... 05/07/09 Pepsi Center - Denver: Whiskey was the 3rd song 2nd set acoustic! We learn something new everyday....
Went to the barroom, ordered drinks for all.
Three days in the saddle, you know my body hurt,
It bein' summer, I took off my shirt,
And I tried to wash off some of that dusty dirt.

With liquor and money, they're loaded down.

You got me working boss man, a workin' around the clock,
I want a little drink of whiskey, you sure won't let me stop.
...gonna drink all day and rock all night...
forgot about that - last one I'm going to call - Peggy-O. Gnight everyone - resting up for my first shows since the Mann. Four in a row (missing the last night). Hoping for some Satanic Majesties (my favorite stones and one of my top 10 albums all time) - keeping my fingers crossed.

Looks like a compilation of individual tunes for a second set. With good flow this could develop into something good but it doesn't appear as they have another agenda to do something with a theme from night to night like they did with the Beatles tunes. We'll see!!
For all we know they could pull out a Danny Boy or When Irish Eyes are Smiling!!

Hello from Eugene OR, thanks for all the updates
I have taken my wife to two furthur shows. She made me leave after 2.5 songs in second set at Portland Memorial last March and made me miss most of the first set in Redmond WA this past September in order to have a nice sit down dinner with our friends while furthur raged on. She doesn;t understand why I don;t want to take her to Shoreline in june on my birthday.. ah well...
Hey Julian, I was literally in Providence RI in '85 and my friends had the tour books of tickets back then from mailing in and they offered me a front row ticket. My wife pulled the "I don't feel well" routine and made me drive her back to Boston so I missed the show. I'm not married to her anymore!!

Great show. Second set was all I could ask for. Phil just lacing out the bombs all night long, playing lead bass on Two Djinn, Fire!, Throwing Stones, especially.
Sound was excellent, esp. up front, but even way off the back of the floor.
Patriot Center has become a great place for a show. Very hassle free, lots of room (show wasn't nearly sold out), good sound, plenty of parking, etc.
Second set was full length, ~1hr45min. Long songs, ya know.
I hate to say leave the wife at home as lately shows have been sausage fests, butdont get bogged down this needs to be appreciated. My wife is very cool- tells me to go an enjoy...and when fashion week comes to town...enjoy wifey! hahahahah!but love lets us work around eachothers interest.

Sorry about the double post, the second post is the finished product, my 5 minutes timed out on editing...
GOOD OVERALL SHOE LAST NIGHT. PATRIOT CTR HAS BECOME A REALLY NICE PLACE TO PARTY. NO HASSLES OR SECURITY. EVERYONE IS REALLY MELLOW. NO LINES OR SHAKEDOWN GETTIN IN. SMALL BUT NICE PARKING LOT SCENE WITH SOME GREAT STUFF AND FANTASTIC FOOD. THE FOOD IS GETTIN BETTA EACH TIME. ALMOST GOURMET. HAD A STEAK BURRITO THAT WAS AMAZING.
ARENA WASNT SOLD OUT BUT WAS PRETTY PACKED. PLENTY OF ROOM TO MOVE AND DANCE. FIRST SET WAS FAIR AT BEST. ALLIGATOR WAS A TOTAL MESS. JK JUST DOESNT OWN THIS SONG. AND THE SOUND WAS PRETTY BAD DURING IT. MINGLEWOOD IS MINGLEWOOD. DIRE WOLF IS ALWAYS A NICE SURPRISE AND WAS GOOD. GREAT SING A LONG AND WELL DONE. YOU CANT REALLY MESS THIS ONE UP. WHISKEY WAS GOOD WITH THE VOCALS AND SOUND REALLY SHARP. CANDY MAN WAS PRETTY. DJINN WAS OK. CUC WAS NOTHING SPECIAL. AND DEAL FUNNY ENOUGH WAS PROBABLY THE HOTTEST NUMBER OF THE SET. ABOUT AN HOUR 1ST SET FROM AROUND 8:10-9:10.
REAL LONG SET BREAK--OVER AN HOUR. BAND DIDNT COME BACK ON TILL ABOUT 10:15.
2ND SET WAS AS GOOD AS THE FIRST SET WAS LAME. IT JUST TOOK OFF. WEATHER REPORT WAS SUITE!! FANTASTIC VERSION. NAILS.
TO HEAR THIS SUITE IN ITS ENTIRETY IS A PURE TREAT. REALLY REALLY SPECIAL.
MUSICALLY, VOCALLY, SOUND WISE-- EACH PART JUST ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. COULDNT HAVE HAD A BETTER OPENER. PROBABLY 20+ MINUTES.
FIRE WAS ALSO GOOD WITH THE PLACE AND ENERGY NOW TAKING OFF.
AND FINALLY-- CUMBERLAND.
THIS SONG USED TO REALLY SUFFER FROM WEAK SINGING. BUT BECKER AND PEHRSON HAVE REALLY SOLIDIFIED THE VOCALS. GIVE THE BAND CREDIT. THEY REALIZED THE WEAKNESS--VOCALS AND THEY WENT OUT AND DID SOMETHING ABOUT IT. THESE TWO REALLY UP THE ANTE VOCALLY. THEY ARE STRONG.
CUMBERLAND TOOK OFF AND JUST FLEW.
THIS ENTIRE OPENING TRIFECTA-- WEATHER REPORT/FIRE/CUMBERLAND WAS FREAKIN ROCKIN. PROBABLY CLOSE TO 45+ MINUTES FOR THE 3. REALLY SPREAD OUT. THAT OPENING 3 WAS MONEY! EVERYTHING ELSE WAS NOW ICING ON THE CAKE.
ASHES IN THE 4 HOLE WAS ACTUALLY A GOOD SPOT. NEEDED A LITTLE BREAK. COULD ENJOY THE SONG THERE. NOT A SET ENDER. NICELY DONE.
PRETTY INTRO INTO TERRAPIN AND THE TERRAPIN OVERALL WAS REALLY GOOD AND LOOOONNNGGG. REAPER IS A TERRAPIN FREAK SO I REALLY ENJOYED THIS. BUT I JUST KEPT DAZING BACK TO HAMPTON '87--THE ULTIMATE TS. OBVIOULSY THIS WASNT THAT BUT IT WAS GOOD.
ONLY COMPLAINT WOULD BE THE DRUMS. THEY JUST DIDNT EXPLODE AT THE CLIMAX. KIND OF WILTED. REALLY MISS MOLO. RUSSO SEEMS TO BE THE WEEK LINK. BUT THE BACKING VOCALS AGAIN HAVE REALLY ADDED POWER. THE EXTENDED SUITE WAS FINE.
SOTM WAS PRETTY GOOD-- AS GOOD AS IT CAN BE WITH WEIR HANDLING IT. REAPER MRS ASKED DURING IT-- WHY IS BOBBY SINGING THIS? KIND OF SUMMED IT UP.
FEELIN ALRIGHT WAS A NICE ENDING. LIBERTY WAS PRETTY CRACKLIN TOO.
2ND SET OVERALL WAS REALLY SMACK. AND IT ENDED AT ABOUT 11:50.
BWAHAHAHAHAH NWO SHSHSUSHI AND COMET O PAPA.9~
setlist:
...
im curious as to what is underneath that marker. what was supposed to be in between feelin' alright and liberty.
great show, awesome crowd..amazing energy and a bumping shakedown.
I agree with the above, Alligator was kind of sloppy and then a slow start to Minglewood but things picked up after that.
Whiskey in the jar was a nice treat complete with green lights, a giant 4-leaf clover behind the stage and went into a ripping dire wolf.
I really enjoyed Candyman, John was timid at first but really let loose leading up to the "if i had me a shotgun" line.
Two Djinn was a freaking trip...the piano solo threw everybody off but it was groovy. right into Djinn>Pride.
Deal was a great great way to close the set. absolutley smoking.
LONG set break..over an hour. but once Weather Report started it was all worth it. From there the set just took of. Phil was on fire playing lead bass and the rest of the band just followed.
Really enjoyed Fire>Cumberland (obviously) but Feelin Alright was a pleasant suprise. The band tore this song up.
I was a little dissapointed with the Liberty closer but it was actually very solid and a great way to end an awesome show.
great venue, staff and lots. The security on the floor was all over the place but didnt give anybody any trouble
Great show. It did take a few songs to get the sound dialed in, but from Dire Wolf on it was all great, and even though the sound wasn't perfect at the start the Alligator was really nice and you could tell that they were into it and that it was going to be a good night. Minglewood was really slow but it worked. You know it's a great night when even the songs you don't especially want to hear (Candyman, Fire, Throwing Stones, Liberty) were played to perfection. Lots of whiskey references in the first set which I loved because I had a bottle of Woodsford Reserve back in the room. Candyman was over the top, John just nailed it, and the closing trio of Two Djinn, Pride Of Cucamonga, and Deal was fantastic. Two Djinn and Pride both got way out there, and the Deal had the energy of an old JGB version. Second set was was all gravy, hearing both a WRS and a full Terrapin suite was great, they just nailed both of them, Cumberland SMOKED, even Throwing Stones (a song I never want to hear) was fantastic. The Feelin' All Right was a big surprise and really well done, and the Liberty encore was full of passion. John has really come on with this band, there were moments when he just took complete control and ripped. We had great seats right down by Phil on the side and the vibe in the building was completely relaxed which was nice after we had to watch a ton of heads getting processed by the cops right below our hotel window (apparently they were using one of the meeting rooms in the hotel as a processing center). They even busted a kid in a wheel chair, we couldn't believe it. But it was a real free for all in that place, and it really is a nice small hall. Looking forward to tonight, but they hit my sweet spot last night for sure. And it was my brothers 58 BDay, he had a great time to say the least.
The Minglewood was slow and dirty (as opposed to slow and boring). I liked it a lot.
They soundchecked Candyman so I was stoked for that and they nailed it.
Deal was the hottest song of the first set imo. Very crisp PoC too.
I thought Feelin' Alright was not a great way to end the second set, even though it's a song I'm fond of, but whatever. After everything that had come before I was pretty dazed.
Major problems with my original seat (Section 2, Row K, Seat 1). When the hall was being set up and the seat-placers were writing the letters in chalk on the floor next to each row, they forgot the letter "I" in my section. So every row after H was off--major confusion!!!--and after a few songs of dealing with seat nazis and lost Heads (and all their friends they'd promised to stub into that row) I up and found someplace else to be. Eventually landed with friends in Section 101; spent the rest of the night grooving on the excellent sound and unimpeded sightlines :-)
Folks with tix in 2/I ended up being escorted to the back to stand by the soundboard. Bummer for them but there didn't seem to be any other way to solve the problem.
The key to my enjoyment of this band is ignoring JK's guitar playing most of the time, and not looking at him when he sings. But now that I've had a few shows of practice it's very easy to focus on Phil and Bobby, who are really the reason I'm there. I understand why the background singers were added but I could take or leave 'em. Chimienti and Russo were spot-on as always.
Wow. Amazing that such a modest and talented musician who brings so much joy to the community could bring you so much pain. How terribly sad.
WTF??
I like JK...every time I've met him he's been very nice. I enjoyed him in DSO for years. But his guitar playing in this band does nothing for me. Other people's mileage varies, obviously!
So please shove your sarcasm, whoever you are. It's sneering assholes like you who stifle real discussion in this place.
Deliadelion,
They really sold a letter I? NO arena ever has row I; none. It always goes H then K, everywhere. It's like the 13th floor of a building; you just don't do it, because peeps think it means row 1. Sounds like a MAJOR f'up by the ticket people, not the seat people. I was in K, seat 5 btw.
BTW, JK is great in this band.
Bzl:
I might have had an easier time with the seat snafu if I hadn't been in the aisle seat. Thanks for telling me about the 13th row thing, I had no idea! Somebody fucked up somewhere, that's for sure.
As for JK...people are entitled to their own opinions--even about him. In Furthur I find his guitar work to be not very interesting, so I focus on Phil and Bobby instead.
Clearly that aesthetic choice bothers a lot of people: they can fuck off. Especially the newbies. The absolute last thing philzone needs is MORE people trying to tell the rest of us what to like and how to think.
Deliadelion,
It's good to hear that you like JK. Maybe I'm too sensitive, but if someone told me that they couldn't enjoy my band unless they trained themselves to focus out my guitar, and closed their eyes while I sang, I'd find that a bit offensive. And newbie or not, no one's trying to stifle discussion here. It'd just be nice if it was on a little higher level.
But as long as we are still down here in the gutter, I thought you'd like to know that I'm not just any sneering asshole, I'm your very own sneering asshole. And judging by the volume of crap you spew, it looks to be a full-time job.
"...it'd just be nice if it was on a little higher level"???
Shit, you really are a newbie. Carry on.
are we done yet hope so
Feeling alrighT
I had mixed emotions while I was at this show. Now listening too it again I am thankful I was there!. It wouldnt have been my choice 2 set However the quality of music that further recreates or produce's cant get better then PERFECT. The music seems to be getting better and better . I know some shows dont roll together like the other ones do. I didnt recall any line flubs or miscues', cant wait til someone posts this show on the archive.... Lastly The line up is cool with me I think JK is feeling more as part of the band .But this will never be the grateful dead, Jerrys gone and music is more tighter then ever. I,ll try to enjoy these shows because the sun is setting on that era. I'll truely miss all those musicans when there gone....(~):}
i was excited to return to this venue after seeing the show there last year...only complaint about anything is the disgusting amt of undercover cops swarming the scene there...i saw it last year and saw it four times as much this year, and this was the only lot i have hit on the tour...luckily i met up with a few friends and kicked it on their bus for a while, got to escape it..but anyways the show..GREAT, a really awesome show. i took a seat upstairs across from the band so i could view the entire stage...alligator was a shaky version to open, which was disappointing as i am a big fan of that song when played really well..minglewood i am normally not excited for but for some reason this version had me boppin around like a rooster..whiskey in the jar was a treat and i was happy to hear phil singing it i thought it was a nice little ditty..dire wolf and candyman were well played, candyman needed a second to get going..i am a fan of two djinn and i like where it was placed and used on this particular night, backend of first set but not late enough to make it a 12 minute ordeal, this was a shorter version that i prefer..pride and deal were sweet closers, the place was out of control during deal, JK was just giving us ride after ride...BEAUTIFUL weather report suite to open the 2nd set...third time this group has played it and in my opinion the best. bob couldnt get the intro correct until this night, and i saw the previous two versions at msg and broomfield..phil raged the fire on the mountain and i really liked JK's vocals on this one...followed up with a fun cumberland--not quite a total meltdown version like this band is capable of but almost there...throwing stones was placed well and nice for the first of the tour..terrapin was great to hear as always, REALLY liking the mastery of the suite ending, sounding better each time...standing on the moon i was NOT expecting so soon after bostons but i'll take it, even with weir vocals...feelin alright was a great way to sum things up from this night, had the whole crowd grooving...people can talk down ono liberty as much as they want but its a fun song with funny lyrics, and it was played the way it should this night, nothing like the trainwreck version from broomfield..
the security here was great absolutely no problems inside the venue for myself nor did i hear of any from anyone else
Great chioce to open with Gator, mighty fine at that, pass the whiskey round for the 1st five songs had the reference, fun stuff. Pour the wine for me with a fine Deal closer and this first set was very good. Solid second set after the Terrapin suite I figured that was the show right there, Stranded on the Moon and Feelin Alright at the time I took the Liberty to say good night and thank you for the gift. Phil still brings it. Sitting in section 115 row K looking straight ahead the sight line was between Jeff and Sunshie. There was a huge void in the stage area with nothing there. Odd I thought as though the void at that part of the stage was you know who that was missing. Mixed emotions everytime I see this group. Love music miss the Man
