What's better than a Sunday with FURTHUR @ Radio City? NOTHING!
Friday night that is what is better
Who cares - they didn't even Phinish the Philly run yet!!!!!!!
^^^thats what im talkin about!!
I had to type something in the first line in order to open this thread. All the Philly shows are great and all the Radio City shows will be, too.
this is the only show i could make spring tour, so its gonna be the best.
Have upwards of 3 extra's for Sunday night. Anyone in need?
It would be very cool if they played Althea and Crazy Fingers in the same night.
Have 1 for Sunday. Orchestra by soundboard. Can't make it. Text 908-489-7374 if interested.
text sent patrick- I am looking for a sunday
Oh yeah Joe Yed. I have a feeling we are gonna get some jewels tonight, especially in the first set. I am call a early '70's flavor for it.
Second is gonna have to have Morning Dew in it and that Fire on the mountain that some guy was screaming, obnoxiously I might add, during the Abbey Road medley from 10 days ago.
See you all there.
Does anyone know if they are selling tickets at the door? Tanx ~
Hey Tom

help on the way? - our tickets just fell through last minute - email me if you have any extras. Is tonight sold out? we had everything set up, the guy I was supposed to meet up with claims he can't make it to sell me the tickets. I think the prick sold them to someone else. this is crazy
How about::: Bertha>Gt.Story>Althea>Big Boss Man>Uncle John's>GDTRFB...
Sound checked Chest Fever and Sunrise. So thoughts are good Larry and Teresa are in the house.
What is Chest Fever?
New york has been sooooo cold these past few days. I bet Radio City is gonna serve up some "Campbells" soup mix for tonight!! That's what my friend Larry says, but hey I'm only the messenger!!! Have a great time tonight Ted. Got your Stella last night but I'm back in Boston tonight waiting for the stream. Yeah and wash that Campbells down with a nice Mountain Dew for tonight!!
Taper Rob knows already!!! Wow, I was on the road for four hours and couldn't beat him to the punch!! Yeah.... IT'S ON!!!!
That is crazy they checked Chest Fever. Literally was listening to it yesterday and thinking "I could see Furthur putting this in the mix." I almost even posted it i had such a strong premonition.
I wish i had the same mojo w/ lottery #s...

Anyone have a last minute ticket...first round on me
Phil told a breakfast gathering this morning that there will be a guest tonite that's never been on stage with them before. Rumors of McCartney seem hard to believe, but ya never know.
Remember the "Campbells" soup thing PLUS yes I did hear about another piece of news but my sources aren't talking. I will pass it along as it becomes available.
what a great song and would love to hear th e boys run it through
Good evening all - what goes around comes around - and the way it goes up it sure comes down - it has been a month of ups and downs for me for sure - today was UP as I made a hole-in-one on the 184 yard Par 3 hole 17th hole (played more like 210) on my 'home course' with a driver! So for all of you out there, I'd like to buy you a 'cosmic cocktail' on me, come on by!!
i am hoping for a stream please!!!!!
How about Robbie Robertson or Levon Helm? Chest Fever>Broken Arrow>The Weight
Any one got a notion about when the stream will come up?
You know Phil sat in at the Ramble this year. That could be a good call. I know they have played with Dylan plenty, but not with the Band backing him up.
Could be Levon but Mr. Healm will never be found in the same room as ROB-BIE!! Oh it goes way back.........
Congrats, Adam, I'm not that into golf but I know a hole-in-one's a Big Deal!
I'll have a shot of Patron!
Levon maybe...Robertson highly unlikely, didnt he have a falling out with everyone
Hence the expression ROB_BIE Self explanatory
Taper Rob---are you at RCMH with Nokia N-series in hand? Thanks for everything!!
I will admit it was for a decent sum $$$$ wise. I'm a 14 handicap (read: 'bogey' golfer) but indeed I do have my moments, as do Furthur. Yes, a shot of Patron it is, my friend.
They should be about ready to go. 7:40 Fri night, about the same Sat. Its 7:35

china doll?

BORING!!!
"Recorded on AOXOMOXOA, 1969. Due to an experiment in recording technology, this song is practically unlistenable, yet it has always been intriguing to those who follow the Dead's lyrics. Personally, I remember spending hours attempting to transcribe this song from the album; picking up the needle and putting it back down; consulting with friends who had their own theories. Garcia has been quoted as saying that the key to listening to the song is to get some nitrous oxide. I don't know about that...
Only performance known: (Thanks, Josh Frankel, for pointing this out): April 26, 1969, at the Electric Theater in Chicago. "What's Become of the Baby" appeared in a monster encore which included drums, "Viola Lee Blues," "Caution Jam," feedback, and "We Bid You Goodnight." "

Waves of violet go crashing and laughing
Rainbow winged singing birds fly round the sun
Sunbells rain down in a liquid profusion
Mermaids on porpoises draw up the dawn
What's become of the baby
This cold December morning?
Songbirds
frozen in their flight
drifting to the earth
remnants of forgotten dreaming
Calling...
answer comes there none
Go to sleep you child
Dream of never ending always
Panes of crystal
Eyes sparkle like waterfalls
lighting the polished ice caverns of Khan
But where in the looking-glass fields of illusion
wandered the child who was perfect as dawn?
What's become of the Baby
this cold December morning?
Racing
rhythms of the sun
all the world revolves
captured in the eye of Odin
Allah
Pray where are you now?
All Mohammed's men
blinded by the sparkling water
Sheherazade gathering stories to tell
from primal gold fantasy petals that fall
But where is the child
who played with the sun chimes
and chased the cloud sheep
to the regions of rhyme?
Stranded
cries the south wind
Lost in the regions of lead
Shackled by chains of illusion
Delusions of living and dead

I know all 3 shows were great, but since I could only hit one, I think I picked a good one. TW killed Sunrise. It was awesome. Triple encore, not to shabby. These guys love NYC
Disagree...Some intense wonderful moments to this show but it was slow going at times...and not my fav...at all.
indeed.... those "intense wonderful moments" make it all worth it... all of it. <3
Really good show, I think the What's Become of the Baby was pretty trying but they made up for it. I'm tired.
I was peaking on mushrooms AGAIN tonight, and the St. Stephen > WBOTB? > 11 was amazing, but I can imagine for those without the third eye open, it was pretty trying. Given that, it was an incredibly intense performance, and the rest of the show was just off the charts good. What can I say? They came, they saw, they conquered.

Thanks TRob!! You're a godsend!!!
BEW... I agree.
I was at Friday and tonight and was way more into Friday... didn't love elvi singing most of the 1st set (was john sick?) and I wasn't trippin so wbotb was just way to long and drawn out for me! Take that out and throw in a fire or a deal or scarlet-fire and you have an epic show!
I am thankful to have blissed out at the show. I love when Larry is home. I loved all the guests tonight. Very Phil and Friends moments with a Ratdog Jazz attack sneaking around this great big sandwich of sound where all the ingredients were being slathered about and getting all over the plate and running onto the counter. whooooah, you all making a mess! someone clean this party up. And then there was Russo. This man has the power. The quicker picker upper! A shepard, a stewart, and for certain, a pilot. He corrals the wild animals into pasture. and releases them into the wild at will. No joke, they had his drums piped into the soundboard something fantastic.
Just got in all I will say is this second set SMOKED Phil's birthday show.
So much to share but they did a HUGE UJB that was raging.Just like they used to do with Larry back with Phil and Friends.
I will write a full review after work today. I'll say this, when you think you have seen it all they do this to you
For all the peeps who walked out during Days...BIG mistake lol
Sweet dreams
What's Become of the Baby TOO intense? enjoy your lame phish and don't bother us at Furthur. shut your fuckin' mouth while SOME of us try to listen and enjoy the rarity of the moment. assholes walk out during Days Between? later LOSERS!!! obnoxious drunks please stay home if you are so bored by GREAT MUSIC. who talks all the way thru Unbroken Chain? the assholes all around me. "You're constant battles are getting to be a bore."
Definitely all Phish's fault.
Definitely.
Nice, quiet, appreciative music freaks around me near Sbd. Most eclectic lineup of guests I've ever seen at a Furthur or P&F show.
Loved the "Greatest Story" riffs in Sugar Mags.
Lighting director really did some beautiful work... loved the undulating red illumination of the (proscenium arch?) in Sugar Mags, and the cool retro-video-game medieval stuff on the screen during St. Stephen.
Place just sounds gorgeous!
So excited to hear What's Become of the Baby and I'm so happy they played that... beautiful song.
Yes, I'm sure there were plenty of folks too impatient and left during Days Between. I can only imagine the Attics...
a really fun and special show... it is tough to review as a 'normal' show because the guest dynamics were such a huge part of it. the dead and their subsequent incarnations have always had a mixed track record with guests. think hall and oates... for me, this night was really fun because they were having a great time up there, pushing the envelope and playing some beautiful, beautiful music. the ship>roses>ship was gorgeous, stunningly well sung and just a sweet take on these jerry classics. diana krall on ripple? just too strange and perfect. set 1 was lite and short overall but it had a great, loose vibe even though the band wasn't totally in synch.
set 2 was a monster. throwin not my favorite song selection-wise but wow it picked up power as it went along and was a thrasher by the end - tough! sunrise - enjoyed because of novelty factor and teresa w brought the house down with her stunning vox. then liftoff achieved with st. stephen, which i have heard at all three spring tour shows i've seen - this one was the finest, so out there... "baby" was a rare, rare treat, very long in fact but done with psychedelic purpose and it was very ghoulish-feeling phil mad-doctor darkness vibe... eleven brought it back up, then a ridiculously sweet uncleJ's... and for me, unbroken was the highlight - jammed it this way and that, just shredded the thing and nailed every intricacy - have seen these guys perform it a few times and this version was off the hook, beyond solid. wheel... ahhh.... DEW was unimaginable - so subtle and patient in the way they built up the final jam. epic. sugar mags brought us home...
then the encores... i have always loved the essence of "days" but don't think i've heard it really performed solidly once. this version was slow-growing, purposeful, very, very deep. what an ode to jerry -- as was the case for so many tunes tonight esp first set. "fever" was fun and slinky - a vibe the band rarely has. then attics, just stunning. the harmonies and good vibrations from the stage were touching, for real.
not your 'standard' dead show by any means - for me, it's a classic that i think will stand up really well with posterity. yet another night to be so grateful for - how many more will we get? at this point, we have been playing with haus money for a LONG time and it is time to keep appreciating and appreciating what we have here in FURTHUR. 46 years and counting. all thanks and love to the Supreme and god bless FURTHUR.
here we go....ted hit it right, half the people left during days between big mistake.....i ripped saturday for the most part and went last night thinking it would be good. Got down to pp in front of phil with lots of empty seats for some strange reason and i was very gladly greeted with some great music. Just when you think youve seen it all they bring it on.It was like the grand ole opry in the first set, definately well rehearsed and very clear and thank god a fast and good cassidy, then they took a very long break of about an hour and thats when all hell broke loose....Good ashes into a killer sunrise followed a great st.stephen even though phil flubbed a verse and started laughing and into a long jam back into st and then things went totally weird. They turned off all the lights and basically the whole place including the stage was pitch black and then feedback and moaning and i turned to my friend and said "it sounds like whats become of the baby" and sure enough...Well the baby went on for like 20 minutes with theresa doing her wailing thing and then into a very good 11.I was pleasantly surprised with a great uncle johns band and it was quick tempo, phil was pushing it ,he did it on st. stephen also and then a great, the best one ive ever heard unbroken chain followed by a quick and moving and great wheel into the dew which started off a little slow but they let john have the rope and he took it to another level at the end and it was great and the weir played a slow but good sugar mags. Now we are all predicting box or brokedown and my friend and i saw a guy hand chimenti 2 pieces of paper and we thought that that was strange that he woudnt know a song so we were very suspicious about what was going to happen and then they went into days between and im telling you half the people left and by this time its already about 11:25...it was a great days between but no guitar solo and then the band starts looking around and lo and behold the grand ole opry comes out and phil introduces diana krall and they did this imprompto bass-piano jam while everyone on stage is watching and this went on for about 5 minutes and then into fever which also went on for another 15 minutes with diana and elvis and weir all taking verses and elvis playing a guitar solo and then they are still standing there looking around like they didnt want it to end...then a great attics with everybody singing and playing non accappella....imo sounds better with instruments,it was great and then they all came stage front including diana and theresa elvis larry and the gang and did the we are not worthy bow.......im still smiling....were going to binghamton ,for what i dont know but were going...see everybody there...just when you think your out you get sucked right back in.....i thought last night was 5x better than saturday and just as good as the best buy shows...i rate saturday rcmh as the worst of the 8 nyc shows i went to over the past 2 weeks...we were joking about how if your at home and listening to the stream and your holding your binghamton tix in your hand how you must be bumming right now...but we will be there even though i am predicting lots of cheese for upstate new york...see everybody tomorrow night
Interesting show is the way I'd describe it. I saw the Wallingford and 4th nightt tower as well as this run. The Sunday show rcmh was my second fave. The first set was not overly jamin but was sort of a tribute set. Not great but Samson was good and cassidy standard: the ship roses was okay and fotd could have been any cover band in America.
Set two is where it gets interesting. The light show I must point out was very good but not terrific. It was inconsistent and the images were different each night. It seems the video board could have been used better. On Saturday it was sick all night. But on to the music...the one ever ones talking
about is WBOTB. I was ripped out of my mind on guinness and skunk number 1. It was odd but almost hypnotic. The
show truly does not become a "dead event" until st Stephen... From Stephen to sugar mags was solid hot grateful dead
music...the encores totally sucked. Waste of energy- I would have left but thought Casey jones might come after days.
fever' was a bad call. Pretty much any tune would have been better.
Overall a very fine and extremely trippy show with a hot second set sandwiched between aperfunctory first set and boring encores.
If my buddy left during Days, I will kick his ass from here till the next show he's at. Many thanks to everyone that blessed that stage.
I was one of those people who left during Days Between, not because I wanted to miss the song but because I was spent and needed to go home and sleep for a 6am wake up. I regret missing Diana Krall's reappearance and the Attics but I feel I got my fill over the two nights.
The Diana Krall sit-in was special. She and Declan rarely play on the same stage. She seemed a tad timid on Ripple but she was a trooper.
Speaking of troopers....gottas love Teresa Williams. "Hey Teresa, good news we'd like you to sit in with us during the second set. bad news it's for Sunrise and What's Become Of The Baby"! Not that those are bad songs, they were novel for me first timers but WBOTB is not exactly a great showcase for her talents. Sunrise was nice though. She sounded terrific. I'm sure she was splendid on Attics too but I don't know because I was home eating a chocolate chip cookie when they were singing it.
...
My only show of this tour and I picked a good one
Was under the weather and was tempted to bail during the 'Days' but thought better of it - figured they would bring out LC and/or Elvis one more time. Glad i did - that Fever was HOT as well as the Attics.
Very solid show IMO - the What's become of the baby was an interesting one in the mix - nice to hear it live.
The second half of that second set was on fire!
Best post-Jerry experience I have ever had. loved the guests, eclectic setlist, and paying homage to the 1980 run by closing first set with Ripple.
Feel sorry for those who left during Days and missed Fever and Attics.
I feel like the band owes me an entire sets worth of show.
The guy who is featured on the Austin Powers soundtrack and dresses like a detective straight out of 1950s (calling Dick Tracy, calling Dick Tracy) comes out for the third song and proceeds to take over the entire show. They should have renamed this concert Elvis Costello & Friends featuring Phil Lesh and Bob Weir.
Is anyone surprised by this? Costello has been pulling stunts since the 70s with his SNL appearance. The guy is British and has no right to be singing classics from the great American songbook.
Just my two cents (pence).
NWONWOSUSHI~~~!!!!!
Scuba Steve,
I think that kind of nationalistic identity (he's British and has no right to sing classics from an American songbook) gets us into a heap of unnecessary problems...
Elvis Costello is a Deadhead just as we all are here; he is in love with the music. He saw the band... in England. So what?
To rumrunr21, who posted the entire 2nd set list in the antney1 chat near the start of the 2nd set last night....GET A CLUE.
First off I have to say, this being my first time at RCMH, this is now, hands down, my favorite venue. My seats were second level first row straight back....thanks to Gabe for the hookup via Philzone.
After coming from the Tower were I had, arguably, better seats for the 3 shows I saw there my RCMH experience felt like business class on Singapore Airlines. Clean carpet, plush velour, no lines for the bathroom or drinks and perfect sound from where I was seated.
Granted I was down close at the Tower (row 9, then 3 and then 16) but it was a bloody mess filled with some very sloppy people. Perhaps RCMH was the same down closer? I don't know.
As to the show itself, I understand the criticism re: the guests. It slows the usual tempo down a bit but, for me, I thought we, or at least my wife and I, got the perfect mix. Elvis was strong but he should be. We bother taking the stage if you're going to be a wallflower. Step up and ad something that will make the experience different for those used to seeing the bank w/o you. He did just that. I knew we wouldn't see him in the second set until the end as they have the room in the first to work in the kind of stuff they did.
I was mesmerized by the WBOTB. I was wishing that I was back in my party day a bit but was pretty transfixed as it was such a departure from the 10 or so Furthur shows I'd seen up to this point. The, almost, pitch dark stage was eery (sp).
It was interesting that J/K only got one tune although with all the guests I guess someone had to take the hit.
The Cassidy and Samson I thought were strong as was the St. Stephan. Phil had a similar slip of the lyrics at the Mann in Philly in July. I think last night was sans teleprompters for Phil and Bob? I think Russo really shines on this tune.
The Dew was my third and I'll probably never be quite as blown away as I was with the one at the Mann this summer but I put that off to that being the first time I saw J/K perform it so I had no real expectations and was pretty blown away by how he pulls it off. Still loved it as I did at the Tower last week.
I was very thrilled when they encored with Days as I love that tune and I had a pretty good idea that we would be in for more as I was not sure how they would end that tune on it's own. The crescendo (sp.) is great and Bobby handles the VOX well but I do think J/K needs to hit those Stella Blue type solitary notes louder and/or cleaner. I want to listen to the Stella from this run and see he sounds in those quiet spaces.
I loved the interplay between Phil and Diana Krall. I could not hear her well on the Ripple so I was glad they brought her back out and let her stretch it out a bit.
I've been to 5 Rambles and just 2 weeks back caught Teresa doing the Attics so I knew I was in for a treat and it was a perfect way to end, what I thought, was a great show.
Just my two penny’s worth:
I remember having the privilege of seeing Pink Floyd when they did their Dark Side of the Moon tour. Got to see them five nights in a row. They were note for note identical, but loved them all even though I knew what to expect each night.
The great thing about the Dead et al has been their unpredictability and knowing you'll have something new each night to sink your teeth into. I had the privilege of getting on the bus in 1973. Now I went to my share of dog shows in the 80's & 90's like it seemed they were phoning the shows in or were never able to get in sync. But I'd always want to go back the next night again and again because enough of them were magical.
Since I'm a west coaster, I'd give my eye teeth to get the privilege to have what you east coaster get the honor of witnessing. I'm just thankful for all of you that stream the shows and put up the recording for the rest of us to hear. Thanks for sharing the love!
They've been gracing us with their presence for 45+ years now and they've earned the right to do whatever they feel like up on stage, especially since they are doing it with such professionalism and grace these days. So fuck you all that can't take that, quit your bitching and moaning, you need to enjoy and treasure what you have. Treat it with the reverence it deserves.
For those of you that can’t deal with that, I suggest you go read the original folkloric story cycle of the Grateful Dead, from whence they were endowed with their name. I truly believe they were chosen for that name, not the other way around. That might give you a little more perspective.
What a unique time and ineffable experience we get to be a part of and share. The love and transcendence that it brings. Embrace it for all that its worth.
Peace and love to all, especially those of you that get “it.” Gratefully yours’ for all eternity!!!
3rd night to a beautiful 2nd run in NYC at the magical RCMH....i was a lot more comfortable walking into this show, knowing the scene, knowing the venue, knowing the security..good vibes all around--even the NYC crowd was a little more quiet than usual!!
things kick off with our sunday sermon, a fun samson, getting everybody in the mood, nothing spectacular or out of the ordinary, although bob did toss the tambourine this particular night, thankfully earlier than some others--i'm not a fan of this intro, let russo beat the skins..i saw larry campbells gear set up before the show so i knew we'd see him, and he walks out for some CHEST FEVER, hadnt seen this done since he played for the phil a thon in 07--11/11. nice intro and good version. next this dude walks out on stage. i am in the 3rd mezz so i cannot really make out faces but by the hat and attire i thought jackie greene had made an appearance. did not take long to figure out this was not the case..elvis costello? i honestly would have never guessed..i thought he did a good job with tennessee jed. someone mentioned FOTD might as well have been any cover band--you are right, with the exception weirs little riffs. i enjoyed the ship>roses>ship..i thought it was super interesting..i would have liked to have heard JK sing at least the ship of fools..side note: this is the first ship of fools in quite some time and the first time furthur has played it at the slower tempo the GD used..furthur has played it faster the few times they've done it..cassidy was pretty standard, good transitions in the jam though...ripple was a good set closer with diana coming out and a full stage crankin.
set break was fun i scored my hampton tix--thanks nick! got to see a lot of familiar faces
was not sure what was going to be in store for this second set. a nice throwin stones to get people shakin the bones..things started to slow down and as i saw TW walking out i told the guy next to me they were going to do sunrise..it was beautiful. i liked the vocals on this one better than the one from furthur fest, although i was significantly closer to watch TW at the fest..st stephen got the 3rd mezz shaking like a madhouse, completely reversed as whats become of the baby began..earlier in the night the guy next to me said he would like to hear something completely out there and different like 'whats become of the baby'...there ya go pal, not many people make that wish and have it come true..it was outrageously psychadelic, longer than the one from FF if i am correct. the vocal volume was a little loud making some of the lyrics completely inaudible where i was..despite some peoples lack of enthusiam for this piece i think it is something worth seeing/hearing..i wish they would turn the lights on so i could see what the boys are doing..i know it wouldnt be as psychadelic but it sure would be neat to see..i had a feeling this was just the filling for the stepehen>eleven sandwich and i was happily correct...a little roughness as they were kicking in but it was a minor timing issue ...uncle johns was very sweet with LC adding some beautiful fiddle parts..up next is what i'd been waiting for for some time--unbroken chain..had been almost 3 weeks since the last, and it was at best buy...certainly not the best version but it certainly had its moments..wheel was short but sweet, a nice jam on the back end leading to the dew. we knew we were getting it..it was awesome JK really got time to use his dexterity to his advantage and give us each and every single note..had a feeling it was coming and bam sugar mag..honestly what else after that 2nd half of the 2nd set...place was up and roaring, my smile was ear to ear...
the encore left so much speculation i did not even bother, and glad i didnt because not in a million years would i have guessed this..days between? was it ever used as an encore? by anyone? many people left during this, i was stoked. i love this song i think it is a hunter/garcia masterpiece..talk about RAW emotion, there it is. there was no way this was the end, and the guests came back out for a rippin fever..it would not have been my choice but you know what thats what these shows are all about. the curveball, keeping us on our toes..crazy shows like this remind you why you see these guys and why you keep going back.
was it the best show? no. was it the worst show? not at all. was it a great way to end 3 nights in NYC with the boys? ABSOLUTELY
What Became of the Baby was horrible in my trained ears(I am a working musician)...I know improv etc, and hated it. Sorry guys...BUT the rest of the sets were heartfelt and epic...albeit sometimes a bit weighty and ponderous.
Kapt Curt hit the nail on the head
this show was ridiculous!
Had the advantage of 7th row and you could see the musicians listening and watching each other and having a blast which translated to the music.
Saw 4 shows in NY out of 8 they all killed
I think people want to sound like they are professional critics or something and they just end up sounding like professional assholes
Hey Ted, I told you something special and different would happen. Good for you I'm glad you got to hear it. I had to go back to Boston so I missed out but that's the way it goes. By the way today is the 42nd anniversary of the epic show in Modesto with the Dark Star/ St. Stephen Eleven/ Death/Lovelight which was recorded. WOW 42 years but what a show. I loved the sound of TC on organ back then. It fit so well with the tunes.Well, I'm sure they will pull some other stuff out. Everybody enjoy the "One never Knows Tour!"
Complaining about Elvis. Classic. Elvis is one of the best songwriters, singers and performers alive. You should be thanking Furthur for letting him "steal" some of the show. Would you rather have heard Bobby sing Rooster or some Ratdog song? OR Phil sing, well, anything?
I know it's a free country and all, and what turns on one person doesn't necessarily turn on the next, but it boggles the mind to hear people criticize this show.
This was a special night, one of those special nights that you'll hear about for years. The band was powerful. The sound was spectacular. The guests were amazing and added to the mix perfectly as they inspired this band to push deeper and play harder and more passionately. Elvis's voice was incredible and his love of these songs was evident. Larry's guitar and fiddle were spot on. Theresa's voice was awe inspiring on Sunrise. What's Become of the Baby was mesmerizingly weird, the kind of thing that has been at the root of the Grateful Dead experience for four decades, unpredictability, improvisation and true creation of music. Am I singing it out loud at the venue, or when I'm in my car? Certainly not, but what a bold and completely out there choice of music to play.
Appreciate what you saw last night. It'll never be repeated. Not exactly like that, with all who were involved. It was a stellar performance by a remarkable group of musicians feeding off of the energy of each other and off of their equally amazing audience.
Last night was a definition of this whole scene for me. Everything that has kept me coming back for almost 30 years took place last night. Energy, emotion, powerful music created on the spot and the right crowd of open minded free thinkers appreciating what was before them. It was all there.
My cheeks still hurt from smiling so much.
You really don't think that if I can't parrot everyone's opinion the Dead "Killed it" last night my opinion doesn't cut it...? We are open minded here...Don't think this is cool or realistic Falk...Point of information...it actually matters if a critic is tone deaf or not...if you are saying it doesn't matter that was my point about The Baby last night exactly.
Things went down that we don't understand...
A) A gargantuan weekend of all kinds in RCMH and New Yorkers have to find a reason to complain re song choices, guests, late encores...
B) Outside of SF/Bay Area NY has seen more GD, Furthur, RD, P&F, etc. shows and still people can't appreciate that.
Many states/regions/cities would die for just one show, yet alone multi-show runs multiple times a year. Maybe Furthur should skip NYC the next time around if they can't appreciate how much love the band showers upon them. God knows they could phil it up wherever they parked the bus.
I doubt in time I will ever understand why people from New York find reason to complain.
Easy now. Skip NY because a couple of people complain?
Remeber, it's this type of passion that keeps it going, that allows for multiple night runs/sell outs.
The disecting of the shows is part of the deal. I can see why some don't like the guest thing, luckily for them it's a once in a while deal and they will have plenty of chances to see the boys w/o Mr. Costello.
Like I said earlier, I loved it but I know that those same people that complain will be back enabling this journey to continue.
It's like the athlete that complains about the very media coverage that fuels his and his sports' popularity/large financial gains.
Can't have your cake and eat it too.
One thing I know for certain now....NY get's the goods, this is fact. I'm off to Pitt. Wed. and wonder how it can compare to what I saw and heard last night.
If at all within my power I will not miss another RCMH show.
BEW my comment wasnt directed at you yet you chose to think it was hmmmmm
and upon further reflection you chose to attempt to lend some legitimacy to your criticism of Whats become of the baby by stating you have "trained ears" and yet you give no specifics as to why in your opinion it was "horrible" you merely use conclusory statements with out offering any evidence whatsoever
Tell us oh master why was it "horrible" please edify the unwashed masses who thought it was right in the vein of the GD experience
was there too much harmonic dissonance for you?
was there too much discrepancy between the tempos the various players were using?
please oh you of the "trained ears (working musician)" help us simpletons! please peel back the curtain and show us what we dont know!
How long was that "Baby" last night? It seemed like it was an hour. I mean I enjoyed it from a "wow, how bizarre that these geriatric guys are actually performing a dissonant, throwaway album cut from 44 years ago" perspective. No stage lights to boot.
I always thought it was ballsy as hell for Phil to bring it back and I'm glad he did and I'm glad I finally caught. Not so sure I'm jonesing for a second dip at in "Baby" pool though.

It's too bad they didn't bust out Barbed Wire Whipping Party last night to give the critics something really meaty to complain about.
Well Capt'n said it well! - I don't know what there is to complain about. These guys keep bringing incredible energy and music and I have to tell you after 34 years I'm still going back whenever I can. These last two tours (only seen the new york area ones) have been the best thing since the 80's in my opinion (humble as that may be). All i can say is thanks!
"I feel like the band owes me an entire sets worth of show... Is anyone surprised by this? Costello has been pulling stunts since the 70s with his SNL appearance. The guy is British and has no right to be singing classics from the great American songbook."
SO, Mr. Scuba Steve Trekkie,
What's your take on Furthur covering Beatles, Stones and Pink Floyd? Does Furthur have a right to cover the "great British songbook"?
If all this "musical miscegenation" offends you, how about staying home next time and watching Star Trek reruns...
Hey even the dead did ALOT of shows where they were clearly out of tune. I mean they used to tune for @3-4 minutes before each 1st set tune and still be off but that was other stuff talking I'm sure. But we still loved it and kept coming back for more. I mean I've been there for over 40 years and I will admit that I "lifted the needle" quite a few times on Aoxomoxoa when Baby came around and I'm quite sure that many of you did too. That doesn't diminish the importance of them playing it last night one bit. Finally after 42 years they played it. The most credit for the "tune" should go to Hunter though because if you just read it it's quite brilliant. I mean a modern poet would be acclaimed a genius if it were written today!!
great show and great fun! loved the whole thing with special guests and all. Elvis costello was fabulous with sincere appreciation for the dead's music. sound was very loud, but why not in such a prime venue. Whats become of the baby was mesmerizing and intriguing. I thought it was well done and very hyptnotizing. Light show added to the psychadelic affect. Really loved the encores and fever was appropriate show music for a NYC venue and show with special guests. Great job all and thanks for a hot night. sick jam during Dew stole the show.
My 5th show of the 2 NYC weekends, and except for the first Saturday nite Best Buy which I thought was weak, each show had its own personlity and plenty of high points. Sunday 2nd set with warren, Tuesday Phil birthday celebration with the medley, Saturday night "throwback" show to honor Bear, and last nite with the guests.
Not only has Futhur done a great job of expanding the setlists, but changing placement of songs around. Sometimes it work, sometimes it doesn't, but they are experimenting and still growing. I enjoyed all the guests, loved the first set, but thought the second set was choppy in parts. But that's OK..thank you Furthur for a real good time.
Sam L.
I dunno, I can really understand what some of the posters were saying about some of the complaining. As a NY'er, yeah they do come here a lot and the real reason I think why is because of MONEY..Of course they will sell out these venues. As NY'ers or the ones who attend these shows I'm willing to bet anything that the RCMH tickets are a heck of a lot more expensive than what the Binghamton show will be. I love this band and what they are trying to do to keep it going, even though I think John NEEDS and SHOULD play a bigger role, but we pay to see FURTHUR not FURTHUR and Friends. I want to hear those guys not Elvis Costello. If I wanted that, I would go see him at his show which I never ever will do. I think the complaining comes from people wanting to hear Furthur and if they have a guest, let it just be one tune not a whole set as the band is still growing together and I rather pay $100 to see that..
Richard
did you complain about Warren at Best Buy?
One footnote not mentioned above. As indicated on the setlist photo, and confirmed by listening to the stream, Ripple was in a different key than usual -- C instead of G -- no doubt to accommodate Diana's voice. Very simple song, of course, but if you're wondering what sounds different about it, and why the guitar parts sound so different...
Set 1 of the stream sounds fantastic. Looking forward to set 2, including WBOTB. The initial breakout of that song on 12/17/04 was one of the greatest musical moments of my life -- though that was helped by being in the right, uh, frame of mind...
"As a NY'er, yeah they do come here a lot and the real reason I think why is because of MONEY..."
Richard Memeger,
You certainly take a cynical New Yorker's view.
There may be a more benign explanation for the phenomenon you observe.
I understand that Phil has a second residence in NYC, and loves to spend time there. Do you think that might also be playing a role here?
The point I am making is that they are a full time now not an ALL Star band. Grateful Dead had onle a handful of guest as well as Ratdog. I rather see John play along side the legends. Of course its great to hear Warren singing Blue Sky with the boys, but with that I rather hear the band and the people I came to see and the music sound I like..No disrespect to EC..
Ok time to jump in as the water is fine.
There some great reviews here that are spot on and are greatly appreciated.
I will not try to sound redundant and will focus on some details that really should be mentioned.
Larry came out with that cool black sunburst strat and I did call that one back at the Best Buy
Larry played the entire beginning and really ripped it up
They jumped right into Tennessee Jed and I have to say that experience Elvis has in Bickershaw has left a positive impression. He ripped it up and with him playing the acoustic guitar it really fit in quite well. Larry and John both took wicked solos.
I am surprise no one is raving more about FOTD, man was it good and extended and very tight. Elvis and John both took great soloa as did Jeff too.
Casidy man have been the highlight for me as the band continued the 70's tribute and played a excellent version. Phil was wild on it and the two peaks were quite enjoyable.
I knew it had to be Diana Krall although her hair was not spoofed up lke on all her album covers.
Ripple was played in a different key and it worked out well, she was alittle timid but I thought that honesty really gave a nice interpretation of teh lyrics. Wow
Vibe at break was very relaxed and highly social and peeps were in now rush, it was in the air that some was afoot.
But Throwing stones? LMAO as mention earlier it started off well and built to a great peak. A solid rocking version.
I will say publicly to have seen Sunrise and scratched off my bucket list makes me a happy man. I think many took her for granted when she was with Phil and she was treated like a well deserved royalty after this one. Incredible performance and that sun dress she wore?
Larry is one lucky man.
The smile on her face after the audience roared and raised her arms to the rafters was all about the love.
This St Stephen had a wicked jam into it and then to jam out of it before the last verse was great. It was funny when Phil flubbed, he lost it laughed and flubbed again lol
At first I thought they were doing Tomorrow Never knows as Jeff was playing that cool sitar sounding buzz thing. The stage lighting was amazing. The rig they have with the long rectanular colume we splashed in red and being aluminum they had these errie glow. Phil was only lighted by these reflections.
Theresa was light by he light on her mike stand which really was a cool twist.
I will say this was like being in a Buddhist temple listening to the ommm of monks.
I loved it.
Then to follow up with a sick ragin Eleven...heaven man. They soared on this one and then into the best Uncle Johns' Band'I have heard from them it was stellar and they raged on it big time. A EPIC version and then I knew that Unbroken Chain was coming and as mentioned early it was classic then a killer Wheel.
By now this had the Mann show written all over it except tonight they played it backwards
Morning Dew was a beautiful version, I immediately thought they were playing it for Japan and John really got me crying on this one.
Not a crazy powerhouse but very moving.
I loved it.
Loved the ragin' Sugar Mag and then Days?
Blew me away although they ended it kind of abruptly but it was clear they were not done.
I saw a set list that had Bertha to be played instead but Fever was really fun and they all were in the groove.Great lights during it as well.
image{my picture}
You knew it could only be Attics and the audience (((((loved)))))) it.
I think I have never seen Phil beaming like he was and the words that he spoke were quite touching and this was before the donor rap
And you wonder why we fuckin' love this band so much?
They give us fever and I know they feel the same.
Richard,
You made several additional points, as well.
Notably, they all pertained to $$$.
i loved last night...god forbid they do something different...shame on you people...but i gave up on further haters...each to his own...i kind of wouldnt mind a special guest everynight
and the one comment from above is 1000% correct....theyve earned the right to do whatever the fuck they want to do when they want to do it...1979- present...as a matter of fact ill be in binghamton tomorrow...bring it on...go further...yeah people
Opps I apologize for the grammatical errors I should have proofed it more. That last photo is from Fever.
This one is from Morning Dew.
See ya tomorrow in Binghamton and
OMG I can't wait
NY'ers are getting WAY too jaded and saturated with this band... Bitching about unbelievable shows................ While out west(NW) we've had a WHOPPING 4 shows since this band formed...
I say they fire their tour manager
>>I would go see him at his show which I never ever will do.
Your missing out on one incredible artist.
If I had to choose between an Elvis Costello show and a Furthur show (venue, etc all being equal) I would take EC nine times out of ten.
"As a NY'er, yeah they do come here a lot and the real reason I think why is because of MONEY..."
Uh, yeah, they REALLY need the money, don't they? Sigh.
Richard M., you made some good points,I will give you that, but you have to rethink "a handfull of guests"......I could probably reel off about 15 right now. Duane A., Greg, Dicky B.,Mick Taylor, Bruce H, Nevilles, Tower of Power, Etta James, John Cippolina, Steven Stills, The Beach Boys, Branford M, Bob Dylan, Pete Townsend, .......... I always find it a treat to have guests, it is an honor for all.
Yeah, Jerry would've been appalled to have Elvis as a guest.

Great review Ted. Any Johnny 2 Times, I absolutely agree. Next time you New Yorkers complain, realize that coming from the Northwest, I am dropping close to a grand just for my wife and I to see one Furthur show in Shoreline (just bought flights, $300 a piece, Tix like $75 a piece, Hotel around $150, and I am sure I will drop over $100 in the venue.
Of course, it is well worth it. It will also be my birthday.
Furthur, come back to Oregon this year!!!!!
Looks like Jerry's long lost effen twin in that photo!! I remember that one. Great line Esse!!
"SO, Mr. Scuba Steve Trekkie,
What's your take on Furthur covering Beatles, Stones and Pink Floyd? Does Furthur have a right to cover the "great British songbook"? "
Ha, more like they are claiming back what is rightfully theirs/ours. The Stones would be nothing without Howling Wolf. The Beatles would be just another 60s boy band if not for Bob Dylan introducing them to you know what. And Pink Floyd owes their namesake to two great bluesmen. Noticing a pattern here?
We created the blueprint. The Brits arguably improved it. But its still our blueprint.
Unless you are talking about New Order or the Smiths ;)
Been on the bus since '81. Been in scores of theaters up and down the East Coast as well as the 2nd City and SF. RMCH has taken over as the nicest venue, so far! Beautiful, spacious, outrageous sound.
Saw Sat and Sun. Saturday was #6 for me in this run. Well played, just not thrilled with the list. Was lookin' for a rocker and got a space theme.
Sunday was outstanding. To me, guests are a treat. They put out 3.4 hours of music (including Donor Rap!) Good variety. Diana Krall and Phil interplay in beginning of Fever was straight out of Birdland! Teresa was great on Sunrise.
Only issue for me was What's Become of The Baby. Lighting effect was cool, concept of performing it was novel. However, it's a throw away song from that album and if you're going to do it, good lord, 17 and a half minutes????? Let's pray it's not a true addition to the rotation.
Off to Binghamton!
I'm gonna break the trend here and say something positive.
This show was GREAT. This venue was GREAT. This crowd was GREAT. The lighting was GREAT.
I'd really be curious to know what kind of show would have satisfied all the complainers on here. C'mon people.
On the main page setlists links (left side), they have some shoutouts to zoners on the picture from this show:
"Thanks Zoners, MK, SA, Bah"
They used TaperRob's picture for the background, too.
Nice work, Zone!
Setlist.com does not include "Baby" in the encore (or list) for 4/26/69. Set 2 from Further Fest last year shows up as the only other What's Become of the Baby?
i have always felt bad for the people who are too limited to stretch out their minds and enjoy the different places these guys can lead us to.you guys will never know what your missing!
Is 'Blues For Allah' just a "throw away song from that album?" After all it was rarely played and it’s soooo long, good lord (or should I say bless allah?) Talk about stretching your mind! Hopefully Furthur will add it to their repertoire. That would really give the ‘critics’ something to bitch and moan about! Joke'um if they can't take a good mind fuck!
P.S. Thanks to all for the wonderful photos!!!
Phil can embrace a 17 minute version of What's Become Of The Baby but we youngsters can't?
Phil & Friends also performed "What's Become Of The Baby" on 12/17/04 (first night of a LEGENDARY 3-night Warfield run)
for all of the whiners who dont want the guests and dont like the experimentation
perhaps this is more to your liking
http://www.deadonlive.com/index.html
I will say this about the sound. During the 1st set it was not that good. Vocals were to loud and not enough Phil.
It was better for the second set but it was not outstanding, Wallingford was much better. I think it had to do with the stacks hanging from the ceiling.
I was sitting in front of the sb as well.
Ok continue on with the love fest
Native NYer – grew up on LI been living in the apple since 1986 after college upstate, moved to the UWS to be within in walking distance to the Beacon. First show Roosevelt Stadium 1976. Seen a lot of shows since then but I lost count after about 3. I saw Fri Sat Best Buy and the 3 at RCMH although I missed the first set Sat. I am very thankful that these guys can still make it out here and get up stage and as long as they can do it I will be trying to get inside.
The guests were great Sunday night. My fav of the 5 shows I saw was either Sat BB, the 2nd set RCMH Sat, and Sunday was really good. Best song of the run was the return of a damn good Space – hooray!
So with all the pleasantries let me put in my “complaints” since as per my NYC lease I am entitled.
John K seems like a very cool dude and can sing the Jerry songs better, or least as good, then anyone. He is not a lead guitarist though and he sure as hell does not lead this band. He plays the songs but that is about it. Sorry, but that is how I see it.
Has anyone noticed that Bobby is starting to sing Jerry’s songs rather than scream them? I very happy Bobby is looking, playing and singing so well. When was the last time there were more comments about Phil flubbing lyrics more than Bobby? Hey I forget the words all the time so it does not bother me but as I said Bobby is singing for real and it is a beautiful thing. Rock on!
Jeff
great observation about JK itis something I have been talking to my friends about He is more of an ensemble player rather than a leader
I wonder if it come from him idolizing these guys for years before playing with them
Jeff99a, I noticed that about John as well. I followed DSO for a good 10 years, and believe me, JK can LEAD a band for sure. He is incredible. I think what we are witnessing is deference to Bobby and Phil. I saw 4 of the 5 Tower shows, and a few others since Furthur formed with John and hadn't noticed it to the extent you mention until the Tower shows. I think that for whatever reason he has become more comfortable in the role as a "player of the song" the way Jerry constructed the lead rather than taking it balls-ass off the chart. Hopefully, he will eventually step up his playing so that he "pulls" Bobby and Phil more than not. But until then it still is some damn good music! I certainly prefer an organic growth of energy over a practiced/rehearsed rendition of Dead music, I think what JK is doing is some of both, withholding (to an extent) his ability to do much much more.
Jerry's influence in the band - and in the entire scene - was much greater than pure guitar-playing ability. You've heard Bill Graham say how Jerry would show up way before the show, before the staff was even there, and he would just play on stage by himself for hours. That means that Jerry woulda been Jerry even if there was no Grateful Dead. Would John still be John if there was no Furthur??? I don't think so...even tho I like him.
Jerry asked Phil to play bass.
Jerry taught Bob how to play the guitar.
This might be Phil and Bob's time to showcase themselves as a thanks to Jerry, and his GREAT PASSIONATE SPIRIT.
Totally agree that Jerry is an entity unto his own. But my point is that JK is much more capable than what he is showcasing currently. I've totally felt the magic akin (not making exact comparison!!!) to a dead show (as best as I can recall from way back then!) at a DSO show with JK leading the charge. I loved the 4 Tower shows but remember thinking that JK was holding off
I enjoy the discussion. These new York shows were great in my view. The 3/25 strikes me as the most focused, but 3/26 and 3/27 were also significant in different ways. The MANY complaints about this band since 09 have gradually lost their relevance. Bob is a great singer and Phil also in his own unique way. Likewise, John is tremendous. I agree that there could be some additional lead guitar excitement, but this is going for the A++ in my view. Thanks for updates, links, and recordings! Onward to Atlanta!
I loved the Sun night show. Very neat song selection. Guests were great and fit in very well. Just some random thoughts:
Only one John vocal all night? Gracious of him to let Elvis do his thing but....
Cassidy-One of the special things I miss about real Dead shows is the way the audience and band would "come together" to make the moment greater than the sum of it's parts. The music and communal experience had a liberating effect on people's egos and behaved together as a catalyst for making them scream in non-selfconscious delight and ecstacy, which somehow caused the band to play louder and longer and better. It was something the band and audience organically and unconsciously learned to do together over the years.
I just knew that, when I heard Jerry constructing a solo and I got excited about where it was heading, and the music compelled me to scream, that others would pick up on it and the room would erupt with energy from the crowd and this would influence what Jerry & the boys played.
It was a trust thing that was learned over many years. I just don't think the modern, aged Furthur audience has that energy to give to John anymore and I don't think they are open minded (in an unconscious way) to allowing John's solos, as good as they are, to take them out of themselves and making them ecstatic.
So, I think the Cassidy was great and, had it been the Dead doing such a version 35 years ago, the crowd would have erupted and it would have been much more notable as a result. Ditto The Eleven and the Dew crescendo.
Well, enough about the current state of affairs and mourning the loss of the magical ingredients required to make "it" happen. I am truly grateful for the band we have today and the fine, fine music they are putting out.
Ripple at Radio City...that's pretty cool.
Throwin' Stones - Being a Phil guy, I'm OK with hearing good old Bobby tunes that I haven't heard in a long time, especially when they are placed interestingly. I still disdain each and every one of Bobby's "vocal improvements..." whole damn government, fuckin' shame, look at it right, look at it right, look at it right, never stopped, no, no never stopped, etc. ad nauseum. But that's just my personal opinion about his masturbatory tinkering with GD classics instead of writing the next Sugar Magnolia, Truckin', etc. Such a horrible waste of energy and talent.
Sunrise - what a pleasant surprise. Loved it. Don't care if I ever hear it again.
What's Become Of The Baby - I dug it, but it was long and draggy and is really a poor excuse for a Space jam. Why can't they just play a nice Space instead?
Unbroken Chain - Interesting contrast in the Chimenti solos between this and the Eyes from Friday. This one was somewhat dissonant and edgy and it seemed like they were right on the edge of not being able to bring it back together. I enjoyed it, but it was a little stressful.
E: Days Between - I had my coat on but sat back down as this was such an interesting choice. The majority of the song was one huge, gut-shaking Phil bomb!
Jam>Fever>King Bee>Fever
Very nice jazzy jam before and I thought there was some hot jamming during the song as well. Diana Krall was great on both piano & vocals. Chimenti also joined on the organ.

Attics Of My Life...and Ripple in the same show!!! So sweet.
Fantastic analysis of our collective experience, Wewantphil! Thanks

WeWantPhil - I'm right there with ya. The crowd definitely appreciates the music and the experience, but let's do it the old school way where people are so caught up with the moment that we all clap, in unison, with the entire beat of a song (like Bertha, or UJB) I keep trying, but not enough people join to get it going through the whole venue.
Hey, everyone has right to their own opinions vis a vis shows. Sometimes negative reviews do open my eyes to some flaws or inconsistencies in shows or certain tunes. I thought Friday's show was excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed the band, song selection and venue. However, there were a few hiccups along the way, including JK having equipment problems that short-circuited the jam at the end of 1/2 Step. There has never been a "perfect" show. Let's be nice and respectful of each other, and of the musicians who play the music. Remember, the Grateful Dead spirit in music-making is about risk-taking. Risk-taking inevitably invites failure, but when it pays off WOW! Those are the moments we and the musicians live for. Insofar as NYC getting special attention or treatment, that's true; we get a lot of shows and a lot great shows. But its true because the GD's most concentrated fan base resides in NYC, Northern Jersey and Long Island, and it has been that way since the early 1970's (followed by Philly, New England and Upstate New York). They play the shows where the fans are. I am not dissing the Bay Area, North Carolina/Georgia or the Midwest. There's lots of us in those places too, but there's just a lot more of us here in the Greater NYC area. That's simply the facts.
I jumped on in 81 and absolutely love furthur and what they are doing for an "apparent" final chapter to the original gd.......i have seen about half the furthur shows so far and rarely have anything but a great experience.....I do have some reservations about off stage decision making, almost entirely regarding vocal arrangements....that being said my worst furthur show is still 60x better than working.....and a show in which they let JK sing is 110x better than working......then again i havent worked since 81.......
thank you all members of the gd family

There are many ways of being caught up in the moment. That's one of my least favorite, right up there with loud singing along. I'd rather be caught up in the moment of listening to the actual song as it is actually being played.
All I can say regarding some comments on inconsistencies with Furthur is that we have to remember that the Grateful Dead were famous for blowing the big ones--the big gigs, and they seldom have been perfect in any way, and if they were perfect they'd be shocked and appaulled because perfect is not Grateful Dead. The dead are not trying to be perfect at what they do, they are the only ones who do what they do! It's flawless in that the Dead have a monopoly on there own genre which makes their music infallible! Its so true. As I write to you I tell you that if you came to expect perfection you came with false hopes and expectations. The dead hated the studio because concerts and live performances were where they truly shined. By the same token, studio almbums and studio cuts are "supposed" to be flawless. Renditions of the dead in the studio, we would all agree, is not the dead at their finest hour. Why do we tend to abhore studio dead? Because it tries to be perfect. Its almost ironic that the persuit of perfection actually leads to failure. Rock on Dead fans and kiddos nationwide!!
Conflicting opinions on here just mean that we all care in different ways, but the key is that WE ALL CARE. That's a good thing.
If my methods of being "caught up in the moment" distract anyone in my area at the show, I'm always willing to accomodate them because good vibes conquer all!
Well said Joe.
I had a guy behind me that wanted me seated during the enire show INCLUDING....the intermission.
I stood when he stood and sat when he sat.
That being said he was an ass. Asking me to sit during intermission was really odd.
I have a decent ass, FYI.
I was on the rail in row A so I had a great view. Had I had someone in front of me standing I would not have been so accomodating.

Musicians distinguish between playing loud and "blaring." Sometimes the music should be loud, but if you push too hard it looses it's musicality. It's the same with clapping or singing along or screaming at the top of your lungs...it has to be natural and spontaneous, not contrived or boorish.
So, while I appreciate Essephreek's preference for careful listening, if everyone did that it would be like a chamber music concert (and the band would be totally freaked out that there was no energy coming from the cowd). That being said, I would prefer to share a show with people who err on the side of careful listening rather than yapping, drunkenness, or "clapping along" during the quiet parts of Morning Dew (eeeeediots).
Getting away from genaralities though, I would hope that there would be times when the music would move the Essephreeks of the world to spontaneous cheering.
My personal experiences at Dead shows led me to a belief system that the interaction of the band and the audience in the creation of musical moments can have great transformational power. So, along the lines of "him not busy being born is busy dying," if during those moments the music is calling for your energy and you shy away from sharing it, then you were not true to the moment and you did a disservice to yourself and the community. Of course, "to thine ownself be true." If you're not feeling it then you shouldn't stand up and cheer just because others are doing it. I'm not going to say that careful listening during those special moments is leeching, per se; I'm just saying that there would have been more positive energy with more participation.
Again, this is all situational and the "right" thing to do is going to vary from moment to moment and person to person. Everyone's an individual. I just like talking about some of the things that make this band, music and community so special. Some of these things, e.g., channeling energy, border on mystical experience and are difficult or near impossible to talk about.
Anyway...what a fun show and tour. And, noting comments above about John, I too hope that he steps way out front, from time to time at least. I just happen to think that Phil & Bobby are complete sluts for strong musical leadership. Meaning that they play best and get the most fulfillment when supporting/playing against/playing off of a strong lead guitar "voice."
Again, same issue as before. There's being strong and standing behind your artistic vision, which can include forcing others to follow your musical path at that moment and there's blaring. More of the former would be welcome, but it's important to differentiate it in terms of, "is it right for the moment."
All the best...
