I've been seeing comments like this, and wonder what sort of control she has over what the band plays, or if this is just some speculation on the part of fans.

I also read in the Hampton thread someone wishing for a recreation of the '89 set list from said city. Is this what people really want is to know beforehand what they'll play? One song, as with playing Abbey Road was cool, but to go in knowing what they'll play? I'm a little disappointed they even have a set list. Gone are the days....

it's been pretty widely acknowledged that she and matt busch (bobby's manager) alternate making up the setlists. sometimes phil/bobby add input, sometimes not. jill's talked about it here on the zone, and again last week when they were chatting on furthur board...

Hey I have heard things about Jill creating the set list but I seriously doubt it. I can assure you no one is telling bob when to play sailor saint or estimated. I had heard that several years ago bob created a software program that spits out a list based on criteria such as last played and even considers what has been played at the venues since even the GD last played a particular venue. At MSG in Nov that St Stephen was the first of any "dead" incarnation since the infamous 10-11-83. Even when the dead would play if you see the movie dead ahead Jerry is back stage making up the Halloween set list in'80. This is certainly a fascinating topic and part of the core of the mystery and lore of dead set lists.

Regarding who makes the setlist, in all respect to all members I hope the band or at least bob and phil do the list but come to think of it it may be fun for the band to be handed a print out and they themselves don't know what they will play.

Regarding setlists:

Phil, Jill, and Bobby have all explicitly said that Jill and Matt create the setlists... of course, Phil, Bobby, John, Jeff have their say and may make edits.

Recognizing themes/colors in sets is something I love... some Grateful Dead anthropologist needs to write a book on the subject someday.

I want to catch a Revolution so bad! Phil always has a shit-eating grin on his face at one point during that song-he wants a revolution.

just back from the show.... first set was hot... everything played very well... Jack Straw smoking.... Sailor/SaInt really well done... energy lagged a little until St Stephen which was really jammed out... Help/slip very strong JK tearing up the Slipknot... nice double encore... Bobby ROARING on Masterpiece..... I think your buddy who saw 7 in the NE must have roadburn.... This was a very good show... a little Bob heavy, but super tight... Fox is gonna rock!!!
