I suppose technically, this thread belongs here.... so... lets have at it!
Heading down from Montana today....Bertha>Jack Straw opener would make me very happy. Looking forward to seeing old familiar faces and lots of smiles...safe travels to all heads headed for Oakland. To those who can't make it you'll be with us in spirit..peace.
I can't make tonights show but I will be following along online. I think "Uncle John's Band" would be a great tounge in cheek opener.
Will there be a live stream of tonight's show? I sure hope so!
Yes. A stream would be awesome... anyone?
Perfect plce for the thread misingfinger.
Haven't heard anything re: live stream...
But you may want to keep an eye out on the GD streaming video site.. They had quite a few video streams going on throughout the 09 tour.
Generally a 30- minute to hour delay, but hey... Don't have a problem with that!
deadvids say they're webcasting crazyfingers tonite...
Is anyone getting updates?
hasn't started yet...
Webcasting crazyfingers?
Is that a cover band or something?
It was very strange to me that there wasn't a single mention of this run on www.dead.net. Generally, it seems like they mention everything that anyone in the band is up to. Anyone know why this run is different?
I hope they brought along Bobby's recording system and offer CDs at the show. I have a friend down their primed to get me a copy of each show....
I am at the desk - we would love any updates! Show time is right now...
Rob... are you going tomorrow?
Yes indeed Hlpslpfrnk & Sun. too, how about you?

Evening everyone!
Hard to tell from the stream if the show is cooking or not, but I'm assuming from Phil's enthusiastic bass bombs that they're smoking the place.
Good to have you Deacon, rough stream here but we are grateful...
Deacon... I do believe we are hearing an audience stream.
You think so, do you HSF? LOL! Yes, my old friend, indeed it is. Even these poor bent and blistered old ears of mine were able to discern that we're not exactly sbd-ing here tonight!
Speaking of which, anybody know where the dlds for the 09 shows went to from dead.net?

Nice to see creative set lists. Definitely better then old GD style which seemed like a possibility for this band. Can get that with DSO... I hope a decent recording is on archive.org by next week the live stream is a little rough.

Rob... Deac will be there as well - in the event we need to have prayer service during the first or second set! LOL!

OK Rob. Bring on the prayer service! Rob is the best at that!

somehow i think phil and bobby got through some issues in the last year or two. phil at the warfield in may 2008, bobby there or elsewhere. but they have gotten to a more comfortable place with all this, a place where they can play with john who is not open to all the complaints about "other styles". i really look forward to hearing these shows, hope i can buy them to send some $$ further-ward.

Steve S touched on a point I'd love to extend. I'm perfectly happy to give props to Brother Obama for helping to bring Bob and Phil back together. I see it kind of gestalt thing. I think they realized during the run-up to the election that together they were capable of making an impact that they could not as individuals. And perhaps when faced with an urgent need of such importance, they realized whatever it was that was keeping them apart was insignificant and forgettable. Whatever the case, this year's music has been off the hook. I am so impressed with these guys and am also looking fwd to seeing the Sat/Sun shows with great an...ticipation.

sweet. that would have been a perfect setlist to see. wonder how it sounded. dude's iphone died a few minutes into the second set!
Umm Seriously, only a few, fine words to describe this show_ UN_FUCKING_BELIEVABLE ! Never, (500 Concerts- not just ...) seen ANYHTHING that compares. These guys are on FIRE !
Peace
Just got back.. eh.. it was so so. The sound was awful most of the show in the balcony. Playing was uneven. John seemed nervous and/or tentative. There were parts that came together pretty well, but they kept loosing momentum.
The end of let it grow was my favorite part.
bye... Joshua
Anyone have a positive review? I'm sure there were the natural occurrences of a first show with a new band but was it real;y that bad?
It can hardly be considered bad for the first show. It was really hot in Oakland and this mass of Deadheads were particulary smelly. There was a danky Shakedown Street set up acccoss the street. The funny thing was despite the soaring temps outside, it was cold inside. They have air conditioning ducts coming up from the floor. The show started pretty much on time and at first it was just Phil and Bob noodling for a while before the whole band came in and jammed into The Other One. I don't know what it is but in the past couple of years Phil no longer lays the huge bomb to kick that sucker in. But they did it good with John K adding his Garcialike fills. The first set was ALL BOBBY...When they went into Bird Song they let John K sing the first line and the place erupted. But the second line and the rest was Bobby in his speaking monitone which brought everyone down. I mean Jay Lane was singing more than Johnny. The Let it Grow was good as they took it out there. I like Jeff Chimente on the grand piano. But most times he struggled to be heard over the bombastic music. Joe Russo was ok...he really swung when it mattered but then played through a couple of stops which was annoying...but not as annoying as watching him play from his kit which they had BEHIND a row of Weir guitars and amps. What was with that? His kit wasn't on a riser like Lane's was and all you saw was Joe's head from my perch on the floor. Lost Sailer and St of Circumstance were good to start off the second set but the real moment of the entire evening, the one which easily recieved the biggest ovation, was when John K sang Althea. The crowd finally got what they were waiting for and they howled throughout and gave a deafening roar at the song's conclusion. Defitately the highlight of the night up til then. The rest of the second set Johnny sang the Garcia songs. The Scarlet-Fire was supurb, the only only mistake was Russo's playing through yet another stop, this time at the end of Fire. I'm not sure what Foxy Lady jam there was because I didn't hear it but I will say this: the band was really cooking once they let Johnny K into the party. Bobby even played a Strat in that second set - the first time I've seen him do so. Bob & Phil, despite playing some of these songs for 40 years, stood behind teleprompters while John K didn't to seem need one.
It was a good show, certainly better than the Dead's run through Shoreline. The sound was fantastic from where I was, although as usual, played a bit too loud. But it's evident that Bob Weir has yet to relinquish his claim to some of the Garcia songs...Because despite the stellar singing of John K, Weir decided to send us home with yet another montitone rendering of Touch of Grey which definately was never his tune.
And the show ended just past 11:30 so folks taking BART had no problems whatsoever.
Excellent review Pete, thanks for posting...
This was the first time that I have seen this John guy. John's playing was good for the
music, his vocals were ok at best,he acts a little goofie on stage. The drummers stold the show, That Russo kid is great. The Band kept the tempo up from start to finish. Over all it was a fun nignt of music
Ditos Peter, I had a feeling it be better than the spring fling. Let's hope they come back east
I was pleasantly surprised after going in with very low expectations and finding the whole lineup kind of weird. They seemed to be finding their footing in the 1st set, which was a bit disjointed but still great. The second set SMOKED.
Kadlecik was terrific and, I believe, truly makes Bobby better. Having a guy who is not only a tremendous guitarist who sounds like Jerry and not in a contrived way like some of the others, AND who has actually studied and played every show they have ever done, was a very interesting compliment to Weir. Watching Kadlecik rip during something like Lost Sailor was really refreshing and made the song great. But he really took off during Althea, which, IMHO, was the best Althea I have heard since Jerry died. And the place went nuts. The Scarlet smoked as well, and from there they went off on a nice run.
In terms of the rest of the band, Phil, as always was solid although somewhat quiet last night. My guess is he will be more in the spotlight tonight. Weir was good, not as good as at Shoreline but his voice was in pretty good form. Chimenti was also solid. The drummers were definitely the weak link. Why Billy/Mickey aren't here, Molo is playing with Moonalice and this band gets stuck with Jay Lane is beyond me. Russo was good but not Billy or Molo. And Jay Lane, attempting to be Mickey and flailing around the back of the stage on a riser, standing, was not only annoying as hell but not quite up to what we all expect. Dude, this isn't a Santana concert. Someone get Jay Lane a chair!
Given that this was only the first night, I think this band will only get better and put a lot of smiles on a lot of faces. Can't wait to go back on Sunday.
great review..thanks
""The sound was fantastic from where I was, although as usual, played a bit too loud""
I didn't go to the show but my buddy did and he said it was mediocre on volume and could have been turned up, I haven't seen any of these guys over volume a show in almost 20 years. One of my major complaints is that they are almost always undervolumed in general or on a specific instrument or two.
dude - throw in some minor earplugs if you think it's "played a bit too loud". Half the time you have to deal with some jackass singing along too loud next to you or having someone give a woo-hoo at the peak of a solo and you just wish the volume was cranked up a little more, it is a rock band, not an intimate jazz club setting
I read these reviews with a measure of being perplexed and bemused. One would think that, given the short run of shows and the fact that John was aboard for the first time, that he would be set free (like Warren, etc) to serve the songs in the best manner. Guess not. Maybe that will change the next two nights, but all I can say is that if I would have gone to the time and expense to travel to see this group, that John would have been slotted to sing the songs Jer sang. Instead, it sounds like in many cases, folks were "treated" to hearing Bob bark his way and Phil to woof through songs that John's voice would have easily been seen as a better match. I kept thinking back to what Jerry used to say as an overriding philosophy to "serve the songs". It hardy seems like that was the goal by Phil and Bob last night. Granted, both of them have, since Jerry died, to carry on the Dead legacy by taking the reins of the Garcia songs in many cases. But good Gawd guys, when the opportunity lends itself to having the chance to have someone well suited to singing them, you refuse to let him do them? I don't get it.
But I wasn't there at the show, or backstage, so maybe they were kindly letting John get comfy and fit in gradually. But it sounds like it came at the cost of the crowd largely feeling disappointed and even angry that he was cut out of the mix so drastically. In a nutshell, I don't get it. Once again, I thought the object was to "serve the songs" and not to grip tightly to them as you sang with the teleprompter, leaving John's stellar and perfect-fit vocals out of the loop.
Here's to hoping tonight fits the bill a bit better. Best of luck to John and the band and I hope folks are able to enjoy the shows a bit more tonight.
I was in the tapers section on floor just below the over hang...the sound was very good there...I just listened to the 2nd set...the tapes are smokin!!! The band sounded tight right from the get go....everybody sounded very good to me...if you didn't enjoy this show I'm not sure what to say...can't wait for tonight!!!!
Everything I heard on the budget stream last night sounded great to my ears. Can't wait to hear those tapes! Get 'em posted!
maybe "serving the songs" is the take them for a walk in an entirely new direction vs. re-creation as close to the original
I this show up somewhere? Need to hear it again and again and again.
"my buddy did and he said it was mediocre on volume and could have been turned up, I haven't seen any of these guys over volume a show in almost 20 years."
PLF? Loud? Nahh.....
Heads up...the parking meters all around the theater are until 8PM. Those armless bandits cost $2 an hour making the lots around there a bargain. Many parked thinking that it was free after 6 PM and many were surprised to find a ticket greeting them after the show.
Yeah, "serving the songs" is certainly up to anyone's interpretation, I agree. I just think John is a great singer and it's weird not to take advantage of that a bit more. But hey, it sure sounds like the second set kicked the cork off the bottle, so onward they go. Just hope the band and crowd has a gas the next two nights.

(Cross-post from OS)
I thought the show was really good overall. It was my first time in the building, and I've heard numerous reports that the sound on the floor has issues, something that seems to be "echoed" here. I was in the very front of the balcony (you definitely don't want to jump off this one, it's high!) dead center and the sound was very good but boomy in the first set but in the 2nd I really had no complaints at all; every thing was there, I could what hear everyone was doing without too many issues. The main thing about the sound is the ceiling is VERY high, which is never good for R&R, but where I was I had no problems.
The Jerry dude was excellent, not sounding too much like Jerry, especially when he sang, and played with flow and some really subtle grooves.
Unlike most other guitar players in these groups over the years he fit naturally into things, instead of TRYING to fit into things. He seemed a little tentative in the first set, but by the middle of the 2nd he loosened up and was jumping & skipping at times and seemed to realize that this is exactly what he's been doing for years, and he relaxed and enjoyed himself. My only issue with him last night is that he would end up in the very high register a little too much, which would become a bit screechy, but overall it was great to hear someone on guitar who didn't have to alter their style to fit the flowing nature of this music.
As the show went on I knew that the Phil heads would be missing Molo, but I thought that Russo stole the show. He was great from start to finish, very sharp but subtle, right in the groove, often altering the groove but never over-doing it or slamming it down out throats. He was outstanding and every time I watched him (which was most of the time) I was jumpin'.
When I saw that Lane was going to be playing a stand up Mickey type setup of drums I cringed, but it worked well. He didn't get in the way at all, followed Russo and did some nice things; the drumming was MUCH better than the Dead, where Mickey was hell-bent to be one of the STARS and would stomp all over everything; but Russo was the shit IMO, not as powerful or flashy as Molo, but not as obvious either. His playing was spare but very creative and jazzy. At the end of the first set Phil hugged and hung on to him for a LONG time. Phil also was staring down Jerry dude grinning all night.
And I was more than happy to have the show end 15 minutes earlier without the monotonous drum solo, which I figured was sure to come; thank you boys for not indulging in that waste of time.
Weir sounded really good and his guitar playing during The Eleven was outstanding.
As usual for me Chementi was a non factor. I could hear him but I didn't hear much to draw my ear, and that’s OK with me because I think it's very easy for the keys to go overboard in this busy music and get in the way. Last night he was there, added color but didn't draw attention away from the meat.
Overall I had a great time, thought the whole show was good, and from FOTM on I thought it was GREAT. Phil played like the monster he is, often doing things that weren't wall shattering but were brilliant musical moments, Bob looked healthy, sang well and played better than I've heard him in a long time, but it was Jerry Dude & Russo that made this work for me.
And it was hilarious how every time Jerry Dude stepped to the mike the crowd ROARED. I wondered if Bob even noticed, but on Althea he turned to Phil with a big grin.
Keep this stuff coming; it was rocking and jazzy and spacey and fun. Different in good ways from P&F, and IMO it was way better than The Dead.
For me the show was a (postiive) marked contrast from all the post-Jerry GD machinations.
JK's leads were there in spades. All the licks, like the signature riff of Althea, the supporting riffs in Jack Straw, the intro and all the chewy goodness of The Music Never Stopped, the hugely melodic explorations of Let it Grow were finally in place (to my ears) and had been missig for so long in this mix.
What the show lacked in "hot consistency" was totally made up for with JKs presence and the musical coherence of having all the elements in place, but the key, signature guitar riffs back in the mix the way they should be.
Weir seemed over mixed to me - too loud in the 1st set, until JK stepped up and got comfy.
Chimenti took some wild, driving piano excursions which made for pure pleasure.
The drummers seemed to get it going by mid 1st set kept it going - regardless of Jay Lane's posing, I liked the more Billy and Mickey mix of drummer and percussionist working together... Jay's backing vocals were solid too.
Phil seemed fairly subdued but I asssumet he will step up more as the run continues.
I failed to get anything out of the opening 10 minute Bobby and Phil Jam that seemed to extend there so-called 45 yr old jamming continuum except that it emphasized just how much that missing melodic voice means to the fans.
Sound wise - I conciously moved to JK's side for the 2nd set because he was so buried by Weir's overloud mix. Thing improved vastly for me once I changed my geography in the room.
Althea was definitely the killer chestnut of the show and to see and hear JK do it was just a fantastic and refreshing experience. Needless to say, the Scarlet>Fire>Stephen>Eleven>LWAF>Terraping was icing on this nice multilayered cake.
I am digging this Further thing - it took me Further for sure!!!!

I have recently just started seeing these guys again since before Jerry died and I have to post that last night's show was one of the best I have seen so far. Way better than the Dead. I had no expectations going in and was pleasantly surprised. Fake Jerry rocked Althea. The crowd was energized, the show was fun!
With all due respect, I wish people would refrain from referring to John Kadlecik as "the fake Jerry". Yep, he does have a confusing name, but if we can wrangle our way in remembering tongue twisters like "Kreutzmann", it might also lend a touch of respect for John, who deserves a helluva lot more credit than just comping Jerry (the real Jerry) licks. I know, folks hopefully don't mean any disrespect.....
Im sort of glad I did not make the trip out west for this, now.
Im sure its a great vibe at the shows but I would have been dissappointed. Not letting JK take the Jerry vocals is a shame.
I would not expect anything to change in the next 2 nights. These guys have been rehearsing for a month so Im sure that Bob will handle most of the vocal duties as he did the first night.
Hopefully Im wrong.....
Ok my review from the rail before I read the others. I thought the show was great, real high energy. The drummers were fantastic, really impressed by those two, especially Joe Russo, that cat has the swing really nice.
My only complaint is I couldn't hear Jeff at all. Everybody else was loud and clear. Bob did a nice job with some usual Bob problems with gear and he did get lost a bit at sea during the Saint Of Circumstance but it's OK that's what Bob does. Phil was loud and smiling all night as was I.
this was my first time really watching John hes a good player that does play some nice ideas in jams, wasn't impressed with his vocals(as the crowd seemed to be) but I don't listen this to music for vocals so he works for me.
All in all an excellent night, I cant wait to do it again tomorrow, and with rumors of a big tour swirling i have a feeling I'll be seeing quite a bit more of these guys in the coming months.
>>ROCK ON FURTHUR>>>
Bottom Line for all is that this is a really good band and they sound really good at the Fox Theater but there are some zones on the floor and tiers above on the side areas with less than optimum audio equalization. I've never seen Dark Star Orchestra but this guy John K. on lead that Phil and Bob have invited into the fold for a 3 night run is pretty damn good lead guitarist and after too many shows with folks that just are a little too timid to sound like Jerry I think it is about time we said enough is enough and let's have a high time. Warren is fantastic but have to say that this guy John K. is my choice for the next tour of The Dead. Where the hell are the drummers anyway, i.e. Billy and Mickey since this is a freakin incredible band and Phil/Bob/Jeff/Billy/Micky/John K. would be even more Furthur!
Well I'm glad everyone who went to the show seemed to have a good time, BUT...
Listening to the tape leaves me unimpressed. John K has the right instrument tones but I find his phrasing uninspiring. when he's playing I don't get the feeling he is pushing into new musical areas.
Althea was a perfect example listen to Chimenti's lead he's pushing everyone else to get the music to pop a notch. When John K takes his "lead" he just sort of cruises along and doesn't create a real spark. I got the same feeling listening to The Eleven, Music Never Stopped, and Terrapin.
And I didn't feel his vocals had any real emotion going on.
I'm more than willing to keep giving the guy a chance, this is an enormous amount of pressure on John to step up to a level he may or may not be at.
For me it is not about "sounding" like Jerry. It is about moving into new musical territory. Jeff Chimenti can do it, Jimmy Herring can do it, I thought what I saw and heard from the most recent incarnation of The Dead did it.
I won't pay to see them yet but I'll keep listening and hoping.
I'll listen to the other shows to see what develops.
Hey Steve S, I thought you were thoughtful at first and then realized that you weren't even at the show which really restricts the relevance of anything you say which completely cracks me up that folks have the chutzpa to post reviews of shows that they are listening to on either crappy bandidth streaming audio or possibly mediocre first post online bootlegs. Hilarious in my opinion since thought this section was for reviews by people in the house.
This band fricking smokes some serious dead ass music and I have seen them in all incarnations since 1987 which makes me young in some circles and old in other circles of wisdom.
Peace,
Steve

for your viewing pleasure!!!
What's up SteveO My post is thoughtful and it would not be hard to realize I was not at the show since I mention that at the beginning of the second sentence.
The tape don't lie. Just because you attended the show and had a good time doesn't mean the music was of high quality.
I've been to shows I thought were great and listened back to the show to find it was uninspired. And in the same way I've been to shows I thought were horrible and listened back to the tape to realize the show was pretty good.
I'll keep listening but John K did not inspire me. The songs were played well, Bobby and Phil sounded good, I just didn't hear the spark.
Warfield 2/2/91, I was not there but the spark of Garcia and Grisman comes out of the tape like a lightening bolt.
This is a public forum people post what they want. Since my post regards the show on the 18th I don't see it as inappropriate.
If you have any FURTHUR rules I should abide by on the web please post them in the other stuff folder since this folder would be the wrong place!
No worries mate. I wrote that a bit late in the evening so peace. Everyone should have an opinion always but god dam if I declare it should really be the folks who were at the show since this is the reviews section. Rules, who needs no stinking rules.......
so im listening to the show on archive i realy liked what john was doing until st stephens. kinda of fell apart during the solo or should i say what solo. For all my DSO brothers and Sisters Bob is in charge until john decides he wants to be in charge!!!!!!!!! Jerry was the leader not bobby!!!!!! Great show by the boys to break in the Fox Theater for years to come! Really spacy show, lots of jams! I actually liked it better than the second night, but nobody will agree with me on that. Sunday was the icing on the cake, like someone mentioned the part of something better waiting to happen!
