So where's the farkin torrent already? Lazy ass tapers. What no one got the balls to go stealth?
Seriously though. Once in a lifetime for you lucky fuggers that went. Happy for you all! And more than a little jealous!
Levon set list?
levon only sang one song as he had no voice he sang ophilia ,his set lasted 1 hour and 50 minutes and they played alot of songs, hope that helps and it fun .ps phil did attics in the middle of levons sets and everybody closed out the nite with the weight about 20 musicians on stage
levon's set guest danny louis , marco benevento and all of phils friends set in at some part of the night.sorry thats ill i can rember it was a long nite
^^^when you say "all of phil's friends", we're talking about the last Phil line-up, right ??
Particle dude, Molo, Larry & Jackie ??
The actual "all of Phil's friends" would need more room on stage than Levon has, methinks....lol
I believe he means all of Phil's friends from the opening set
lol......that makes sense.
I'm getting too literal today......
wow, man that musta been sweeeet!
i'm gettin' one of those peter t tascom thing a ma bobs...
Acapela "Attics" with Phil, Amy Helm, Teresa & Larry was just beautiful.......
looks Grate !!!
it sure would be nice to see Phil and Levon do a Phil Ramble for Phil Campbell County where the Tornadoes devastated everything, one of which is a Family Church of ours.
>>>>>. "Attics" with Phil, Amy Helm, Teresa & Larry was just beautiful.......
It was a "death bed" moment for me. That's for damn sure.
Intensely breathtaking.
So was it announced prior to ticket sales that Phil would be there ??
It was Phil & Family & Friends at The Barn last night. Getting to see Phil interact and react to his son's playing was very special. The three of them harmoninzing on Sigh No More was just magical. Who am I kidding the whole thing was magical.
The Cumberland and Rider ripped, Teresa owned the Birdsong and everything else was really well played, great choices for the venue.
Levon cut 5-6 songs out of his usual set to give Phil more time, but they came out and showed no matter who is playing they own that barn. Brian Mitchell on keys and vocals just killed it all night long. What a talented guy. Best horn section I have ever seen. They brought Jackie out and he led a rousing Rock and Roll Shoes.
Thanks Phil!!! Thanks Levon!!
Is anyone gonna tell me if it was announced prior to ticket sales ??.......lol
It appears to me that way more people were in the know than I would expect from the Rambles.
it was announced on the zone...
anyone take pictures?
Special Event
Friday, June 17, 2011
Midnight Ramble, Woodstock, NY
Gates open at 6pm, studio doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 8pm.
Sold Out, No tickets available...
SORRY, NO COMPS OR GUEST LISTS!! The Levon Helm Band
Guest, Phil Lesh
Only ticket purchasers will be admitted. No comps, guest list or ticket switching from another date.
Turtle, was it an official announcement, or could it have been considered hearsay until it actually happened ??
Or was helped along by Jackie's tweeting ??
I knew I was gonna be sorry I missed this one.
It was announced from day 1 on Levon's site that Phil would be there.
>anyone take pictures?
Security was extra tight, no photos in the studio.
Well, very cool indeed.
Only pity is that nobody else will likely hear what went down.
But that does put the 175 attendees in an instantly special frasororititerny.....er....club.
^^
It was announced on the zone, but tickets didn't last long after that. I clicked directly over to Levon's site as soon as I saw it here, but it was sold out. Back to the thread on philzone, someone had posted they'd just gotten tickets, so I didn't miss it by long.
There aren't many tickets to begin with because it's a very small place. I'd sure like to be there next time. I'll have to start paying more attention to what Levon is up to, I guess.
Phil needs to stop this furthur nonsense and get back to the business of being important.
What a great time! I will so be back for more Rambles. That Birdsong was magical. Thanks to all for a great vibe great show and a very special evening.
Weir will be there in September. Look for it to be announced late July.
it was announced on levons site as all of the rambles are. he announces a few at a time .they dont consider it a phil or moe or any other band show its a levon show with special guests so everything goes thru his sites.so keep an eye it an you can see who is playing an act quickly as theres very few tickets
It was Phil & Family & Friends at The Barn last night.

Rumor on doggie board from person with very high credibility that Phil and Friends including both sons will be playin' some shows in the fall.

i think phill kids the the main part and everyone did the harmones but it was a long nite so i could be wrong
^That's about how I remember it. We were in the seats behind the keys. Got to see Levon pop out of the green room and watch it. He was beaming and bopping!
>>>>Rumor on doggie board from person with very high credibility that Phil and Friends including both sons will be playin' some shows in the fall.
Sweet.
Maybe Julian Lennon could open...
>>>>>. "Attics" with Phil, Amy Helm, Teresa & Larry was just beautiful.......
I caught them doing this last year when Levon rolled through town, without Phil obviously, but it was just perfect.
It was Phil & Family & Friends at The Barn last night. Getting to see Phil interact and react to his son's playing was very special. The three of them harmoninzing on Sigh No More was just magical. Who am I kidding the whole thing was magical.>>>
...Yes, magic was exactly the word i would use
The Cumberland and Rider ripped, Teresa owned the Birdsong and everything else was really well played, great choices for the venue. >>>
right outta the gate babeeee !!!
what a nite, the air was filled with excitement as we entered the winding lil road in anticipation of the journey we were about to embark upon. As soon as we got checked in, away i go to the community food table to drop off our donation of butter cake, homemade whipped topping and berries. There was so much food and fellowship, the mood was mellow and wonderful, with folks just wanting to chat and introducing themselves like we were all old friends gathering.
I had two cases of jam, i ran into a couple of very kind staff members (((dolores))) that took it from me and promised to get it to the intended folks. we get in line, doors open and away we gooo. Once in it's much smaller than i thought, but just awesome and very welcoming in every way. we find our nitch and jam spot right in front of fireplace ( behind seats and straight on view in center). getting settled in i find that the nice guy i've been chatting with to my rt is a zoner and we had actually bought tics from him for a prev show in tic folder
Looking around we also spot some other familiar faces, so everything is falling into place just the way it was supposed to be. There were no drunks spillin n swillin or yellin ( Bobbyyyyy ...j/k)...all were def in the zone of utmost respect for Levon and the special priveldge of being at his treasured home and studio. ohhh, there go the lights, here they come.....
once the music begins for me, it's a very personal and private experience, i will keep the memories of friday nite always very close to my heart.....just know that the music = magic and deep soul stirren that at one point brought me to tears.....seeing Phil with his sons, sharing their passion for playing together, with us, was such an intimate experience that everyone who enjoys Phil, should have a chance to see.
I will NEVER forget the smiles on each of their faces, and the nods to one another as they were playing........Priceless !!
the highlights for me were...
Cumberland
Comes a time
Attics
Acadian Driftwood
Peggo O
Mountains
Rider
Keep your lamps trimmed n burning ( Teresa, rips this up, myyy gawd !! )
...there were so many more
...on the way out the awesome lady security came over to me and whispered in my ear...Phil and his family were sitting at the table inside, and they each had a jar of your jam in front of them......
this is the review i put on furthur board the other day, thought i'd share with you folks
my oh my what a night friends!!!! 24 hours ago i woke up, got my shit together, picked up a trunk of 500 GD tapes (thanks matt!) picked upa friend hit the ramble a nd drove straight home, not a wink anywhere in between
my first ramble...
you could feel the special vibes in the air everywhere, being greeted and welcomed by all the staff---"this is your first time?? OH YOU CAME FOR A GOOD ONE!" we had a couple beers in the provided cups smoked some herb enjoyed the beautiful property...people were already lined up ready to get in and doors werent even opening..i saw a friend from tour roll in completely unexpected, couple familiar faces, tons of new---we brought a dish, a caprese salad, just a slice of tomato, slice of fresh mozzerella, basil leaf, cracked pepper/sea salt and olive oil---we put it together on the side of the highway a mile f rom levons we were super self conscious about our dish, i don't know why...wasn't sure what t o expect etc....so we walk up put our stuff on the community table and turn the corner....
so i'm having a smoke outside before showtime, lo and behold russo is milling around i chatted with him briefly he told me he was incredibly stoked to be there for the ramble (his 2nd) and he was extremely happy he was getting to play WITH levon--exact words--great guy got a handshake he even remembered our names at the end of the conversation
well we finally walk in...HOLY SHIT no pictures can show you what this place is REALLY like....it is CLASSIC...so much smaller than i even thought....we had seats most were taken we copped a couple in the very front corner stage left next to the keys/organs/etc...3rd row (last row) so i got to stand and SHAKE MY ASS all night long...everybody was so kind no bullshit no talkers, everyone was there to see the music....
the excitement when the band walked out was intense...larry on guitar of course, russo on drums phil w alks out with grahame and brian and jackie greene slides in on keys...was an interesting lineup, fun as hell...
Cumberland Blues
Chin Up Cheer Up (Larry on pedal steel)
Comes a Time (Neil Young)
Quiet Your Mind
Peggy-o (Larry on Cittern)
Never Satisfied
Uncle John's Band (Larry on mandolin)
Mountains of the Moon (Larry on Bouziki)
Back Down South (Grahame song)
Acadian Driftwood (Larry on fiddle. )
Bird Song (Theresa on lead vocals)
Sigh No More
Mountain Song
I Know You Rider
phil was ecstatic to be doing this he was having a freaking blast, so were his kids...they sounded fantastic vocally, and pretty darn good instrumentally...he mentioned it wasnt quite fathers day but i think that was their communal gift to each other
theresa williams was absolutely stunning as usual (a goddess in my opinion) her vocals, light guitar playing, and general ambiance provided a great angle for both the other musicians as well as herself...she was doing some deep thinking and being blown away by all the solos
set break free to roam around the parking lot grab some more food maybe run into another artist...we just met up with some folks we knew got some food, burned a few...the only downside to the place has got to be the bathrooms...they are like single toilets unisex and its not like the lines were long, just took forever, but in their defense, the sound was fantastic ANYWHERE in the barn..including upstairs in line, and even while in the bathroom taking a leak the sound was fine it was bizarre
did not have to even put anything on our seats to come back to them with no random wooks in them...levons band was incredible...i was totally blown away.. they have a filthy good keys/organ/accordian player i think his name is brain mitchell? very good...they had a small 4 piece horns section a trombone/tuba player (who actually performed tuba solos---my first experience with that!) a killer tenor sax, wild trumpet player, and a soprano/alto sax player..they were just blowin all night long adding such a killer dimension to the music, culminating at one point with them parading around the barn while the band (and them) continued playing...played a lot of tunes i didnt know, but played deep elem blues, attics of my life (with phil on vox) larry did some intense acoustic guitar work, ophelia (the band), lots of random blues, and encored the weight with everyone...at most i think there was like 14-16 people on stage, no one was stepping on anybodys toes....jackie came in periodicially throughout this set and we also saw danny louis from mule do some keys as well as marco benevento
most of this set phil was sitting directly across the room from me watching from the same angle but on the opposite side...he was absolutely loving it, it was heart warming to see phil having so much fun without even having to play..jill was in the house!
i really cannot believe how awesome the rambles are....truly a one of a kind experience well worth the money
William great review and too funny. We were right next to you. We flipped those seats up and boggied down all night long. Said to you or your friend we had the best seats in the house, and we really did.
Next to the magic of my first Grateful Dead concert in 89. And the pure love felt at Phil's first shows at the Warfield in 99. This night is right up there. We are a lucky few!
from jambands http://www.jambands.com/news/2011/06/18/phil-lesh- nods-to-mumford-sons-zac-brown-band-kings-of-leon- sits-in-with-levon-helm/
The Grateful Dead bassist opened the show with a new band that featured his sons Brian and Grahame on guitars, Phil Lesh & Friends member Jackie Greene on keyboards and Furthur/Duo anchor Joe Russo on drums. Lesh let his children chose his setlist, which resulted in covers of such modern acts as Ryan Adams (“Chin Up, Cheer Up”), Zac Brown Band (“Quiet Your Mind”) Kings of Leon (“Back Down South”) and Mumford & Sons (“Sign No More”). The group also performed Greene’s “Never Satisfied,” as well as The Band’s “Acadian Driftwood” and the Furthur/Brian Lesh original “Mountain Song.” In addition, Phil Lesh & Friends member Teresa Williams—who performs in Levon Helm’s band—took over Bob Weir’s parts during the latter song.

All the reviews I just read above were RIGHT ON target . . . great vibe being there, loved every minute, felt so fortunate to see the interaction with Phil and his sons!! That was priceless!!

some of his thoughts on the ramble, and i'm excited to ck out his band as well...
~ In other news, I’m excited to tell you that I joined a group called Trigger Hippy. We’ve been rehearsing some in Nasvhille and have some select dates planned for summer. It’s an awesome lineup: Steve Gorman, Nick Govrik, Joan Osborne, Audley Freed and little ol’ me. Check us out: www.triggerhippy.net Look out ya’ll!! We be on the facebook as well ~
cumber~lyn & sideshow--
it was way cool meeting you two!
and in such a random way
i'm still floating on the sweet music's energy from that night
Is it true that Levon only sang one song?
It would not surprise me, Pete, given Levon's constant throat issues.
his throat is truly in horrible condition...
he attempted a few verses in like only 2 or 3 songs, and Amy and Teresa were right there to aid in finishing the line when it faded at the end..
>>joined a group called Trigger Hippy.<<

Thank you for sharing! I was at the ramble and loved it, amazing place...I assumed many of the songs Phil and Son's performed were orinals b/c I did not know them and was wondering if I would ever get to hear them again...looks like I have some digging around to do find them but look forward to hearing them again!
bones
he attempted a few verses in like only 2 or 3 songs, and Amy and Teresa were right there to aid in finishing the line when it faded at the end.. >>>
i thought he did attempt a couple of other times, truly bittersweet. Was great seeing you guys hope you enjoyed the rest of weekend. We toured the mansions on the Hudson and their beautiful grounds. and SS got to see and walk his bridge over the River as well. Weather was grande on Saturday.
...and that lil Inn is our new, best kept secret around
he only sang one song and a verse of the wieght,he had no voice ,never tried any more
It's okay, so long as Levon keeps bringing great musicians together...
So the $150 is to see him play drums?
I'm just askin' as that seems to really pricy especially on the weekends when the guests are not particulary special and Levon sings one classic the whole night.
yes 150 to seen him play drums .you never know if he will sing the throat problem keeps poping up.but its still very cool but much cooler when he does sing
guests are not particulary special >>>
i think you forgot the sarcasm icon, at least i hope you did....dude !!..."not particularly special", c'mon !!
...and for the record,......it was priceless ~
would'nt let me edit.....Pete, i just reread the post above, sorry ! but i would pay the 150.00 again, actually we may go see taj guesting next. The experience is well worth it !
i think a not so popular guest would be better, especially is they were special to me, as it would'nt have been so crowded, but this was expected and ok with me.
>So the $150 is to see him play drums?
The man has put together a 12 piece band that talent wise is as good or better than anyone else out there. You do realize they all get paid too? To see them interact and enjoyment they have playing with each other in such a beautiful, intimate setting is worth the price of admission alone.
I've been to a dozen rambles, saw opening acts I had never heard of who ended up being great, saw Steve Earle, Norah Jones open, saw Levon sing up to 5 songs, saw him sing no songs, it doesn't matter. You cannot put a price on the magic that the band and that barn give you.
yep ^
((( Phil&Pham )))
Levon and fam...
$150 tickets keeps idiots away. Seems like small price to pay actually.
<<<$150 tickets keeps idiots away.
not necessarily
actually Peg, there were'nt many yaa hoo'ers at all, most all were very cool and mellow. It was awesome. maybe you speak from experience, and the one you went to had some, but this was my only one, and all were in agreement of the idiot factor, not there.
we were in line, and jackie was standing right beside the line, a few feet away (before show)...and it was just "known" that you don't go over to him, and all respected that and no one approached him ~
Was Jackie smoking cigs?
<<<<actually Peg, there were'nt many yaa hoo'ers at all, most all were very cool and mellow. It was awesome. maybe you speak from experience, and the one you went to had some, but this was my only one, and all were in agreement of the idiot factor, not there.
was just funnin, seemed way too easy...
no,nanc.... i did'nt see him smoking. there was NO smoking anywhere near the entrance or barn. you had to go way into the lot or sit at the bonfire(designated spot). Really was nice how all obliged, very respectful. Also you were given strict instructions upon entrance of all the rules, and security was enforcing, especially the cell phone thing. But they were very cool about it, at the same time.
i heard he was hangin at the bonfire at one point by a security friend i had made thru the evening, i was outside getting air. I did'nt go over( smoking area) cuz i detest cigs that much. No need to meet him anyhow he gave me what i needed ...on stage with Phil
ohh, i thought you had a bad experience there or something...lol ! Hope your well, maybe we'll see ya soon ~
im embarrassed to say that I pulled an italianmojo
but yes, he was smoking outside, lol....
>>>Was Jackie smoking cigs<<<
Hopefully seeing Levon struggle to sing was a message.
And do these Rambles sell out every time? I would imagine they do, and I would imagine whoever the guests are the overall nature of the event makes it worth the money.
Keep on Ramblin' Levon!
saturday's was not sold out..
peggy and I were pretty close on pulling the trigger on it.. lol
>Hopefully seeing Levon struggle to sing was a message.
apparently not.
I really need to have a chat with that boy
ohhh, wow...i did'nt actually see him smoking. I left my phone and camera in car, was'nt about to be bothered with that when there is music going on
>>>I really need to have a chat with that boy<<<
Something for him to look forward to!
He's playing some solo shows in SF and at the tiny Kuumbwa in Santa Cruz this week & next. I'm sure he'd be happy to see you.
Interesting that these Rambles don't sell out. Being from the other side I'm not well versed in the geography of the region; is this place far away from things in general, hard to get to?
The ticket prices for those rambles are not cheap, Lance.
well, "far away" is relative in the east coast compared to the west coast.
its about 2.5 hours (maybe a little less) from northern NJ and NYC...
that's further than it is to go see a show in Philly..
we don't travel too far, normally...
but I know that in CA driving that time for a concert is rather commonplace..
>>>im embarrassed to say that I pulled an italianmojo
LOL, E!
"saturday's was not sold out.. "
It said on his site that it was, I tried to get tickets and couldn't.
^^^I think he meant next Saturday.
yes from Hartford it was about 3hrs, but lance there is a lot to do in the area, so very easy to make a weekend out of it. We stayed in Woodstock ( Inn was nice and priced right, not to smarmy like others i've stayed at) town was def more tourist~y than last time i went there. but the area is beautiful.
we went did some antique'n and hit a nice lil town called Rhinebeck ( Terrapin is a cool restaurant there), hit a couple of parks along the Hudson and saw the Vanderbuilt mansion and grounds, also learned some cool history facts on the way. you could easily find a something of interest to do in area. We ate at an awesome restaurant, that made me a homemade soda with ginger, fresh lemon, and infused herbs....delish !
$150 is definitely not cheap, but these events sound pretty special/memorable overall, and considering if you go to a regular show and pay $75 for the ticket, then all the other well-documented (beaten to death) expenses, it sounds like it's about equal.
It sure sounds cool to me.
BYOB, that saves me a least a hundred bucks right there.
right.
compare it to a $75 priced ticket.
then throw in that its 200 people in levon's home.
THEN factor in that its all BYOB..
and you can leave and come back all you want, and drink all you want, as long as you behave, and keep it in a red cup, and take your garbage with you.
If friday's show was in a venue in and around NYC, I probably drank appx $70 worth of alcohol (if it was bought in a venue) throughout the evening..
edit: yeah, what Keith said
>I'm sure he'd be happy to see you.
we'll see. I just posted to his facebook page
ohh, yeah i did'nt think of that, we don't usually drink at shows, and did'nt at this either. was a sober weekend all the way... well, except for the incredible high i got from the music, with a most awesome hangover ~
hey - just wanted to put my 2 cents in. I was fortunate enough to have caught the friday ramble with Phil and it's a life changing concert experience. you cant put a price on it and i like the "keeps the idiots away" comment. there is no funny business, not taping, no pics, no nothing - JUST the music. and the bands deliver. Everyone is totally accessible, but the vibe is that you just dont act like an idiot. I had a tshirt w/ an old pic of phil on it complete w/ wrist bands and he said, "now that is a handsome guy" hahahahahha, it was classic. i actually felt funny wearing it in front of his sons. Its just a different experience. Funny thing is, i typically would wear phil flags anywhere and everywhere -but at the ramble i felt out of place. It's like a church - and after all the live shows i've seen this will go down as perhaps the most special. I recommend anyone that is a fan of music go as quickly as you can to a ramble. Levon has had a tough couple years and he is a gift that you should experience. He still plays teh drums like no one else. His band is so damn good - phil stood side stage w/ his jaw on the ground. I could go on and on. What a great night. We had to drive back to CT 3 hrs and got 2 hrs of sleep, had to give the babysitter $160, then a ride home, and then 2 crazy kids at 7am. Worth every second.
just a couple more comments - i did not know most of the songs covered, but it really didnt matter. They crushed them all and you were loving them like you had heard them a million times. the acadian driftwood and the birdsong were both highlights for me, and Jackie Green blew us away. So talented and so much heart. Besides how moving the entire experience was, i'd say another great thing i got out of this was an appreciation for Jackie. I knew he got it, but had no idea just how much. So bummed i just missed him at Bearsville a few wks ago too. Damn it!
>>but I know that in CA driving that time for a concert is<<
2.5 hrs? that's like a weekday shoe...
>>>>I would imagine whoever the guests are the overall nature of the event makes it worth the money.
Absolutely. The Rambles are a celebration of everything I love about people, music and community.
I was lucky enough to be there to see Phil last week and it was my third Ramble overall. The first two occasions blew me away and I was totally unfamiliar with the guests (several artists on both occasions) prior to hearing them play the Ramble.
Seeing Phil of course was a pinnacle for me, but I have to say the atmosphere - while still very very cool - was a bit more "amped" than on the occasions when I went to see relatively unknown guests. If the Phil Ramble was your first, you should go check out an unknown there... totally cool in a different way. MORE mellow if you can imagine that! And Levon makes sure you get your money's worth as I've never heard a bad note in that barn. In my experience, the talent is consistently stellar and the sound is unbelieavable. Plus the setting... the barn. You have to see it to believe it.
As for Phil... too many HOLY SHIT moments to count, but some of my favorite parts were seeing the look on Phil's face while watching his sons play, watching the Lesh boys jam with each other like they were in their basement, and watching Phil "be a fan" (grooving, clapping, smiling) for much of Levon's set. Peggy O and Attics both brought tears to my eyes. Also, I was right there with Phil when he put his hand over his heart and dropped his jaw as Amy and Theresa stepped up to sing the last verse of The Weight.
It was an honor to be there.
thanks for the reviews. does anyone tape these rambles? it would be great if this music could be heard by more than the 200 lucky folks who got to be there.
No recording of any kind at the Rambles. It's a bummer. Hopefully the soundboard will be available at some point.
id pay $150 for one of these before Id pay $20 for a TRI studio stream.

so sad
So you can bring booze as long as you solo cup?
Also what's the closest airport to fly into?
yes.
drinking is very easy, and hassle-free
its appx 1 hour from both SWF (newburgh, ny) and ALB
You can bring whatever you want, as long as you put it in a cup. They have tightened up a little. When I first started going, they let you leave your cooler right outside the barn, so you could grab a beer and get back in the show in about a minute. Now you have to leave it in your car, so it may actually take you 3 minutes to get a beer.
Albany airports about an hour away, but doesn't service too much of the country. Newark NJ would be the closest major airport, about a two hour drive.
