Back to Spac, chicken shack! Looking forward to another sunny summertime show at SPAC.
I concur wholeheartedly!!!!!
...curious as to what the attendance # will be? I get the sense the bloom is coming off this Furthur rose. Btw, I was at SPAC '83-'85 for the progressively monster-sized shows culminating with the 56K+ in '85 leading to the venues's 25,000 ticket cutoff for all subsequent concerts there. And yes I had pre-purchased ticket for all those shows: was also there in '88 when the dirty, scummy sense-of-entitlement gate-crashers epitomized the harsh dark scene until the end in '95.
Was going to make the pilgrimage back home but the timing didn't work out, and I'm also planning to catch them here in my transplanted home of Raleigh, and I just read the posting on Further where the show has been moved from the 20,000 capacity Walnut Creek Ampitheatre to the 5,000 capacity Raleigh (downtown) Ampitheatre citing "production related matters", which I read as industry parlance for "poor ticket sales". The upshot is that I can now walk to the show from home (a rare tour bonus treat!). Also got word through the grapevine from someone who attended that Bethel Woods was a far cry from it's 15,000 seat capacity, maybe only in the 5,000 range...
And if anyone should run into (my) Brother Al or Sister Martina, give 'em a warm fuzzy for me; you just might catch them by the yellow balloons...
Bethel ticket sales 11,500. I don't care if there are only 10 people who bought tickets, more room for me to enjoy.

Thank GOD you are at the show so you won't be here to f**k up the chat or discussion board. I had hoped you had crawled back under your slimy rock dude. You are a sick person. I am not too shy to call you out and tell you that. I tried to get you kicked out of this fan phriendly place but as yet you are still here. I strongly urge you to be nice to people around here dude.
Hi there and hope everyone is excited for a gorgeous night at SPAC!!!!!!
I was wondering if anyone had any extras for tonight, indoor orchestra or other type of seating......I need 1 or 2.....I am at sshaffer3@stny.rr.com.....
I can meet before show or in SPAC area. I live about 2 hours away and was thinking of catching this show if I could get a primo seat or 2.....
Karen....e-mail sent.
"...curious as to what the attendance # will be? I get the sense the bloom is coming off this Furthur rose."
I don't think it is the "Bloom Coming off the furthur rose", as much as Furthur has just played so many East Coast shows this year.. you know Supply and Demand. Regardless, I would much rather see Furthur at a 5000 seat venue in Raleigh than a 20,000 seat venue. Hope to catch a stream tonight from here in Portland!

thanks for the link totem
I spoke with one of the SPAC crowd control staff. He said only 7,500 tickets were sold (less than 1/3 capacity). That was the most low key I have seen SPAC since the Allman Brothers Band show in 1980.
SPAC
hmmm...
since these set lists must be pre-written. I am curious to see two ballads where John takes lead in one show. Seems a bit lopsided..
"Howard H."'s post furthur supports (all puns intended) my suspicions as I suggested early in this thread.
And, my associate who's seen The GD, et al. going back to 77/78 and who was at this show also stated it was very mellow and "low-key" as well, though the band's playing was in great form and it seems from looking at the set like they brought yet another solid show to the original and legendary summer concert venue among the geysers and Avenue of the Pines; hope all who were there enjoyed themselves and added another psychedelic swirl to the GD music mosaic.
My friend's brother attended Bethel and had reported what he thought looked to be barely more than 5,000 attendance figure there and that THAT was also a mellow scene. (Me thinks the 11,500 as reported in the Times Herald-Record was wishful inflation by the promoter...).
We shall see how they do at the Raleigh Ampitheatre (5,000) next week; if even THAT is not a sell-out, will have to reassess how much furthur the bus is really going to go...
Oh, and to the imbecilic "pabst": what are "now" tickets and just how "awesum" was that '88 SPAC show YOU attended? That '88 SPAC show was god-awful, uninspired and lethargic, and ranks at the bottom for me. Yet, from your posting it's not surprising you might've found it "awesum": must've been the combination of hippie crack and a nightstick upside your head . Now, THAT would be sumthin' awesum!

This band was so connected tonight. Totallyblown away.
This was a killer show!! I thought the band had way more energy than at Bethel. Also, the sound was much louder tonight.
John's vocals wailed on So Many Roads.
See you Thursday.
Tonight was just an utterly magnificent performance. Terrific first set with a Sailor>Saint>Casey Jones to end and a 2d set that was just one long highlight. I think they pretty much play the living hell out of everything and the only variable is the set list.
As for attendance - I was at Bethel. Capacity is 15,000 and the crowd was much closer to the 11,500 listed by the promoter than 5,000.
If Howard cited an attendance figure, I believe him.
Not all of us need to analyze every facet of Furthur's touring, Chuckster. Some of us are just happy to continue to go along for the ride, all these decades later.
>My friend's brother attended Bethel and had reported what he thought looked to be barely more than 5,000 attendance figure there and that THAT was also a mellow scene. (Me thinks the 11,500 as reported in the Times Herald-Record was wishful inflation by the promoter...).
>Also got word through the grapevine from someone who attended that Bethel Woods was a far cry from it's 15,000 seat capacity, maybe only in the 5,000 range...
That's preposterous, and i can prove it: The pavilion alone at Bethel is 4,500 people. It was packed- sold out. ask anyone who attended if there were only 500 people on the lawn.....
Thank you Taper Rob for the streams.
While I am no expert at crowd estimates, I have been to enough different sized shows over the years and have seen the numbers afterwards to know that while SPAC was far from a sellout, it was way past 1/3 full. That 7500 number may have been for presale. FYI, the inside has just over 5000 seats. Also, whoever estimated the Bethel crowd at 5000 has no clue about estimating sizes of crowds. Bethel had way more than that.
I don’t think it’s “analyzing every facet of touring” to post a comment re: when a show (and furthurmore the show you’re planning on attending) is moved to what is in essence a 75% smaller venue little more than one week beforehand, and to make an observation on the emerging attendance trend (in this case downward) which obviously predicated such a move. If anything, there is no more significant aspect of touring--in terms of logistics and routing--besides attendance/ticket sales (projected and actual!) and how it relates to venue size, number of dates, etc.
And even if Bethel Woods is notwithstanding (if the inside seating there was sold out @ 4,500 and let’s say there was another 4,500-5,000 on the lawn, then it’s probably still a fair approximation to say that that venue was only 2/3’s full of capacity, which would jibe with my experience attending Hampton the past two years which also appeared to be about 2/3 of capacity), if there were “only” 7,500 in attendance at SPAC then there’s no arguing that place looked like a ghost town relative to its actual capacity (remember shows there are now capped at 25,000 so that is even less than 1/3 full venue capacity), and don’t think this would go unnoticed by at least the bands’ management and wouldn’t influence considerations of furthur venue bookings on subsequent tours (granted with Furthur as with life the only thing granted is living in the eternity of the moment).
My comment(s) are in light of what I consider to be no longer just a perceptual but an appreciable and significant change in the interest level and consequential attendance as they pertain to “Furthur”, as supported by the evident attendance figures, and the pending Raleigh change-to-significantly-smaller-venue move (and of course we must also take into account the current in-the-tank economic conditions); I merely suggest that it would seem things have "turned a corner". Not everyone has to “care” or concern themselves about this but the point remains.
Yes, I know the more intimate venue the better (but really doesn’t anyone who’s ever sat in the first 5 rows in those old hockey rinks anyway remember the rush of the sheer energy and sound/air movement coming off the stage, nevermind the Wall of Sound!) and I doubt no one other than the promoters and Jerry’s ex-wives--both legal and common-law--misses the 80,000 seat cavernous football field tours. One would figure they’ll always be able and need to play bigger rooms/venues in NYC, LA, Chicago and the like, but given the rigors of touring, Bob and Phil’s advancing age, etc., the days are more likely to come that to see this band (sic) one will need to travel to a bar in Mill Valley and hope you can get in.
I’ll leave the “paralysis by analysis” to those here who fancy commenting on such matters as “when Phil ‘glared’ at Bob, I could tell it meant…” or how they lined-up on stage for the curtain call, or opine about who should be making the setlists, the length of Weir’s pants, the dynamics among Bob and Jill et al, or when Jerry switched from black to the red t-shirts (and back again…). The more things change…
That Casey Jones was fuckin out of this world!!!!
This band is kicking it, and, as Bob says, just getting better. The best out there. I hope they keep roaring!
So - this was my first time to SPAC. Just out of old tourhead curiosity, why are there SO many REALLY fat people that chain smoke? Just wondering. Thanks. BTW - this isn't nycdave. I'm just at his computer...
Hey Now, Older Phan! Thanks for coming back - we missed you and we need you to help tell the stories. Oral tradition is alive and well... Have grate shows!
Sorry if someone posted this already, but is Bobby going to wear that same shirt the whole tour?????
So this is NYC D. When the GD were selling out football stadiums they were in a position to be in control of alot more then they are now.
This is a discussion board. Anything is fair game. Hopefully we can be kind, but even that is not a requirment. People who have intellegent observations are interesting and always welcome. People who say dumb s*** can be ignored. Example: I could tell by the way that John looked at Bob, that he felt that he should be singing this song. Uh, OK whatever. Everyone has an opinion and an as*hole. It's all cool in the car pool. My friend Heather is now using her own name. She is a west coast head who is mellow. I am influencing her in east coast ways. When one thinks that something is wrong, say so. Disagreements about anything, real or imagined is ok in the Philzone. It's all cool in the car pool.
adamdean-not real sure what your trouble is with me but you seem like a real angry baby. Get some help. Telling me to be nice around here and then trolling me months after we had our little spat is creepy. Please ignore me and I will gladly ignore your pathetic whining. You couldn't get me "banned" because I offended noone but you. I think you are an asshole and you think I am the same so we should leave it at that. no reply is neccessary.
^^^Glen Beck is that you? Adding up a list of partial truths does not get you to a correct conclusion. Furthur has gotten so good and defied the critics at every turn. These are smart fellows, with what appears to be a great support structure. Let's hope for the best!
Last night at SPAC, I had several thoughts. Mainly, they were: "this is still a lot of fun"; "it's different - but not that different"; and, "while I miss the energy and intensity of the 'happening' that was the Summer Grateful Dead tours in the 1980s', now that I wear a touch of grey, I really don't miss the massive throng of hangers-on with fingers in the air and the extremely nervous security, and having to pee in the bushes because the venues' bathrooms were insanely crowded and fighting my way to my seat (or worse, my spot on the lawn) because hundreds of really wasted heads with lawn seats were squeezing into every square inch of the venue.
Last night there was a modest but real Shakedown, excellent music and a relaxed atmosphere suited to the age of the crowd.
I was at Bethel too. Neither place was packed. But this is 2011, not 1987. Time marches on. Bob and Phil are doing this out of love for music and the fun times they definitely deliver. Re-living 25 years ago is not part of their plan and I'm totally down with that.
Enjoy it while you can - because before you know it, we will all be pining for the good old days on the Furthur tour.
thanks Heather...so many roads ...so many stories...Raleigh is already becoming a new tale to tell. I am so psyched. I just got notification of my seat at the new venue which is similar to what i originally had ...12th row center. This band is really taking it furthur for me! Listening to the delay stream of set 2 right now.
lots and lots of fun...never been so close. great show
Well, it seemed like the number of folks at the show was just about exactly perfect last night. Both sets, to me, were just about exactly perfect. Oh, and I know for me that when I yell out psychodeallia for no one to hear except for perhaps me; I know that I have seen one of my many top shows. This has been happening since 1980 or so, and it keeps on happening; It fills me with joy and gratitude among other good and happy feelings. What a lucky bunch. Psychcodeallia running wild. Listen for it. It'll be uttered by a fairly old, somewhat overweight, usually bearded, sweaty, dancing dude. I must say that since the FURTHUR incarnation, this has been happening more often than not, and the reason has become obvious to me. Last night....PSYCHODEALLIA, RUNNING WILD, with a 72 year old thumping bass player, Bobby and likely the best band I've seen put together since I been on the bus from 1980 till today. Me; I'm going to keep going till it stops, and me,I'm obviously not getting any votes for Dad of the year; but feel fortunate to have my 18 and 19 year old asking if they can go see that FURTHUR band everytime they hear me say they're coming around, coming around again. What a blessed bunch we are. I wonder how many will be at the XYZLMNOP Show they're scheduled to do next week. I'm going, I can only hope that Phil and Bobby along with the rest of this GOD given Band of Musicions have the health and strength to be there too.
Going crazy out here on the West coast, would so love to see the next three nights, esp. GOTV and Phili!
Good morning! After a little reflection I realize what a totally smoking hot show this was! Glorious upbeat HCTS opener with a solid improvised jam set the stage for a funfilled, very jammy old school show. First set was rock solid start to finish with a monster Sailor Saint into a blistering Casey Jones that blew the roof off the place. So Many Roads had the place singing along and filled eyes with tears. JK owned this song! Second set saw Phil driving a beastly train with huge interaction between JK and Jeff and Phil. Eclipse was short but super sweet and very psychedelic. Backup singers were amazing on this. Other One saw a weird interaction between Phil & Bob but then Phil crushed the lead in, JK ripped leads and Bob nailed strong vocals. Wharf Rat was long and a serious meltdown! Set was like we were transmitted back to the late 60s! Mountains....WOW!!!! Uncle Johns was perfect. Vocals amazing and JK stepped up big time. Then....Boom!!! Viola Lee! Boogie mania! Energy down front was strong, positive, and high with lots of dance room admires, hugs and total focus on the music! Box was the perfect way to cap this night! Phil meant it and band was firing together and huge smiles from Phil!! Incredible organic psychedelic feeling everywhere in spac this night!
I'm having a brain fart. Is "Eclipse" an original or cover? If the latter, by whom was it written/performed? Thanks.
it's pink floyd - from dark side of the moon
And all that you see
All that you taste
All you feel
And all that you love
And all that you hate
All you distrust
All you save
And all that you give
And all that you deal
And all that you buy
Beg, borrow or steal
And all you create
And all you destroy
And all that you do
And all that you say
And all that you eat
And everyone you meet
And all that you slight
And everyone you fight
And all that is now
And all that is gone
And all that's to come
And everything under the sun is in tune
But the sun is eclipsed by the moon
Set 2 of SPAC looks like the best set of the tour so far, at least on paper.
For the record, Bethel had at least 12,000 people, possibly as much as 14,000.
Eclipse is Pink Floyd from Dark Side of the Moon. All that ya buy beg borrow or steal.
Well, duh! (And that was directed at me). Of course! Pink floyd!
All are entitled to the brain fart, don't be too hard on yourself. These guys (this band) can surprise and bewilder the best of us. May I suggest; just be Grateful. It is all still happening, and you are among all of us chosen to be here in this space and time. After all we are the lucky ones.
Here's a review of the show I found:
