I can't stand Hornsby ever since he stopped the show at the palace to yell at me for not being in my correct seat. He tries to appeal to too many different people. He also ruined plenty of dead shows. He shouldn't be allowed to cover dead songs.

I was gonna add Box to my list of potentials for this weekend, but that would have been an error!
I agree that Terrapin is likely in the cards for tomorrow too.
The encore was Ripple, not Box Of Rain.

my bad on the encore; grabbed that from setlist.com, which has now fixed it
puts Box back onto my list for tomorrow or Sunday
The show and GOTV were/are great. Plenty of stuff for everyone to do The show was really good, specially the Masons St Stephen/Eleven.
I hadn't heard the new new minglewood arrangement intro, always nice to hear a new twist on an old tune.
When I was over at the kids corner Joe Russo was playing with some kids from School of Rock and they played Sweet Child of Mine.
Keep on Truckin and we can't wait to see you back out West!
The first four tunes were brutal. The boys just didnt have it. But from Sugaree on they found it and the show was very enjoyable.
Joe Russo was all over the place yesterday - caught him with the guys from God Street Wine and that was fantastic.
^^^^
Agreed that Sugaree caught fire, but when Big River is a highlight??
I was on the rail and was not impressed- never got it going. I'm hoping Philly is better, GOTV has little to recommend. Bobby's "solos" were particularly painful. And JK had only a few highlights. Again Jeff is consistently hot
It truly does feel that John is restrained. Jeff and Phil are by far the best in this band
> Bobby's "solos" were particularly painful. And JK had only a few highlights.
wow - that's a stark contrast to Mansfield on thursday - bobby's guitar was fascinatingly unique and John really grabbed the lead role a number of times
maybe the presence of the guests made john lay back
what "guests" ?....did Larry play with them last night?
Good to see I didn't miss much. Had to get out of there by about midnight/Stella. Too HOT and crowded for me. Must be getting old.
It was worth sitting in the scorching heat all day, though, to hear JK sing Carry That Weight. He sounded phenomenal! Glad Bobby let him take that one.
*Name change inspired by Jill
> what "guests" ?...
sorry, i erroneously thought the picture of pregnant Joan Osborne - which was actually Amy Helm, I guess, was of Joan sitting in with Furthur - which was also wrong
so, in my best Emily Latella voice: "Never mind"
ah...well, this Furthur band would do well with Larry sitting in...heck, maybe Jimmy and Warren and Molo too!

Mountainaire
hey now- the show at vibes was honestly disappointing. The venue is not right for Furthur. Its too big and the event is more about shoppping AND the vendors than it is about the music. Nothing really was layed out well and the ticket counter had a lame process for admitting patrons with these cumbersome wristlets...which they ran out of at 8pm when it was 100 degrees...the band sems a little- dare I say- old?....shit Im 40 but the show seemed to drag a bit. Not sure what people were thinking setting up lawn chairs and blankets- what you thought you were going to have cush space near the stage?...nfw...mansfield was by far a better show. First set was decent but it was just too hot and too crowded and I think the crowd tried to be into it but it was laborious. Next time hopefully the whole experience is better. I prefer this band indoors with a decent light show- the stage here was nothing special- no lights or even the tie-dye back drop...hopefully there is a winter tour in NYC again...time to scale back the venues.
Gathering of the Vibes is not just a Furthur show. It's a 4 day music festival. I was there for three days and it was great. You can't compare it to going to a Furthur only show. People set up blankets and chairs because they are checking out bands all day (from 11:00am). Taj Mahal, Derek and Susan and Levon Helm were all great that same day Furthur played. I also checked out some really good bands on the smaller stage.
GOTV was a wonderful festival. Great breeze off the sound when you wanted to go sit by the water, plenty of food, bathrooms and water if one followed directions, many great camping spots and lots and lots of good music. As someone noted, it is not a furthur show but a 4 day festival. I have been going to dead shows for nearly 40 years and thought furthur was wonderful at Vibes but I was not expecting to see the GD, I was expecting furthur
I have been to the Vibes 5 times. I have never been blown away by Furthur, Phil & Friends or Ratdog when I have heard them play the Vibes, ahtough sometimes that may have had more to do with my mental state than the quality of the shows. But the bottom line is that I believe the nature of their type of live performance is so intertwined with the energy of the crowd, and the energy at the Vibes is inherently scattered. There are people there for all different reasons - and not everyone is there for the music - or at least for this music.
That having been said, I thought Furthur played a strong show Friday night with some high points. Levon Helm band killed it, and watching Amy pour her soul into her lead vocal in that heat with that pregnant belly was breathtaking. Every time I see these guys (Phil, Bob, Levon) I am humbled by the chance to hear them making new music after all these years.
Because we decided to go just one day (Friday) instead of camping the whole time this year, we shelled out the cash for VIP tickets. The tent was a godsend during the heat of the day, and the elevated viewing stage was fantastic for 5-foot me. The crowd up there left something to be desired but we tried to let our happiness infect those around us to the best of our abilities, with uneven success.
I've heard the a capalla Attics with Phil, Teresa and Larry in Phil & Friends, with Phil, Teresa, Larry and Amy at the Ramble, but the Attics with Bobby was just spectacular. It even brought that big scattered crowd into focus. An old head next to us, turned in disbelief and said "This is the most beautiful thing I have ever heard." To me, that alone was worth the price of admission, and suffering through the sweltering heat.
Actually, it's not a cappella. Just minimal accompanying guitar.
If any of you were near me at this show, I'm sorry I sang so loud. With that said, I do not regret it, especially because they played so many songs within my vocal "wheel house".
And I'm not sure why anyone complains about this band. They could have retired in 1983 if they wanted to. But they love the music and the fan interaction too much to stop. They love that on any given night, anything can happen. Sometimes it does...
