Hello Jackstraw From Wichita! How as the trip to Colorado? Hope you are doing well. Philly is much too wet this summer, we are drippin'! I'm just back from a great trip to Ireland (the Darren Clarke Appreciation Tour) in the dunesy linksland. The Guinness was awesome! See you in the chat, bro.
Sets look Siiiiiiiiiiiiick and venue and weather look Sweeeeet!!
who sang train to cry???
Just wonderin' no matter what, great addition to the rotation.
just listening to the stream...should have known better than to even ask...sounds good though.
not a mind blowing show - but again another well executed pretty much on point Furthur show.
The stranger call opener was nice, reminded me of last years shakedown opener, and then they played shakedown - whcih was my third shakedown in my last 3 furthur shows, but ill take it, JK was so amped to jump into shakedown, but of course bob had to change guitars and slow it down, dire wolf was sweet another great call, and train to cry with bob on vocals nice as well - better than a cc rider or deep elem, i thought they would add a deal or something after cassidy but the closing cassidy jam was fat and nice...oh yeah the cumberland has huge and cucamonga is great and for anyone that wants to hear broken arrow ill take cucamonga any nite over that....just personnal opionion...any how set 1 closes with cassidy - i caught the set about 4 row on "the floor" standing about 10' center from the stage...a little lady is yelling in my ear the whole set all the lyrics...you know how that can get...but its great she is so excited...i move around a bit at setbreak get a beer and find a seat right side second row from the top of the seats...i like the perspective better than right up close
set 2 - music is a sweet opener and then a great transition into golden road, seriously - anyone else catch that? It was almost like they left a chance to reprise music the way they jumped into golden rd...and golden rd has definetly become a tune they shine on....for me strawberry fields is ok....i can take leave it - i love the beatles...i just dont get why they are so into the beatles? any way the other one was tight and dramatic with stops and starts and pounding jams and then the highlight of the show is wharf rat - and this is where i give bob weir allot of credit....this is the highlight everyone knows it and they are letting this guy JK take it, and he nails it, in a way that bob really cant match and i think bob love to be center stage and he loves singing the jerry tunes but hes smart enough to know to back off, and JK rocks it and the harmonizing is primo, a nice breezy wheel > uncle johns and suddenly you have a classic run of other one > wharf rat > wheel > uncle johns....help/slip/franks to close out is solid but nothing on edge or anything like that, overall a nice set...ripple encore is another one ill take any nite....eugene oregon rocks...uncle jons band showed up tonight...with the stage sitting on the banks of the river
oh yeah and I swear JK quoted some phish in cumberland or at least a little uncle pen which is a phish bluegrass cover?
Yes, Uncle Pen is a Bill Monroe song that Phish covers.
"i just dont get why they are so into the beatles?"
Because it's the Beatles. You know, the most influential rock band of all time. Just a guess.
Bob Weir sang Train to Cry I think from when I heard it on webcast. I just heard first set from webcast, and it sounded SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I am so jealous, wanted to be there! Love that venue, have fun everyone,my friend Mary is coming tonight for the final two shows, thanks taperrob and thanks for the reviews, love eddieboy!
Listening to the show a day later from TRob's stream and am lovin it! Nice first show of the fall tour! Yikes.
looks like an awesoms show!! super excited to join the boys in coorado- much love, long live the grateful dead!!!!
Friday show was spectacular. Not sure if the boys are just tight, tight, tight or if they want to get as much in before curfew, but especially in the first set, they dove from one song to the next effortlessly, not rushed, not jarring or abrupt. Attentive count and away they went, full power. I was struck by the tightness of playing. John K and Jeff are just locked in with each other and both, really ALL players are simply playing and singing so strongly as a unit. Terrific ensemble playing. End of opening Stranger ripped toward the end and Shakedown was strong. Minglewood was really the only clunky tune of the night. Am still not a big fan of some of Bob's reworking of the tunes and the penchant to divide singing lines up with some measures of filler, but Bob be Bob, I guess. Cumberland ripped, Cucamonga was a perfect choice for a happy, mellow Eugene crowd. Cassidy set closer went OUT THERE, some really interesting, seemingly newer chord changes in the jam.
Second set pretty epic. Golden Road is a real MVP of reworked old tunes. They own it like the song deserves. Strawberry Fields. Wow, am surprised to hear of folks complaining about this choice. It was perfectly rendered, beautifully played, flawless. John K's vocal was as in the pocket as you can get. The Other One transition was powerful and tight, didn't quiiiiite get way out there, but ya can't have everything. The rest of the set was, like the rest of the night, very tight, expertly executed and hairy in a good way at many points. Have only caught maybe 12 Furthur shows, but this one was likely the best as far as how expertly tight the playing was, how much the band plays as a strong ensemble and how that allows them to take more chances and go with confidence. Superb night. Incredibly comfy venue, good sound,, great views, sweet Eugene vibes.
On the down side, the city and the authorities responsible for towing cars, hassling vendors and making a heavy handed presence can all go to hell. It is one thing to try and deal on some level with those who don't bother to go to the shows (maybe it WAS a problem when 40,000 folks were at the shows in the past), but whomever was responsible for the complete over-reaction to the vending/open-container, "problem" just wasted a great deal of taxpyer money with overzealous authorities working overtime, hassling people and writing useless citations

I couldn't agree more. Powerful, out, sonically adventuresome! An amazing show!!!

long time no see ya round' bro how are ya!
My favorite version of "It Takes A Lot To Laugh..." comes from the Jerry Garcia & John Kahn show at Oregon State Penitentiary, 1982. Maybe Bob Weir agrees wth me...
