Rested my bones from last night, ready for round two! I don't understand all the complaints about last nights show. I thought it was a nice warm up for tonight, although there was a flub here and there. Anyone tell me how to post pics on here? I have good ones from last nights show...

Eclipse
I like that setlist! Was the '1 More Sat. Nite' opener the first repeat of this run? Good placement for that song too, got it out of the way early.
The photos of the lots were nice - love the views, it is such a killer place to do the shows. I miss the 'Rocks too. Haven't seen a show there since P&F in '02.
I'm guessing I'll be sad to have missed this next set to...it feels like it is going to be a good one.
I think they repeated the China Cat Rider.
Oh yeah - Eugene. My bad. I even heard it. But it was not a stand out of the night for me, so I sort of forgot it already!

these first sets are starting to get a little sloppy. A little slow and a little sloppy. I hope they pick it up. That first night first set was good with the Stranger but it has declined from there. This first set didnt do anything for me, nothing here that got me excited( maybe the Round and Round). But I am sure its just me and I am being to critical. anyone else feel like that??

The first two night first sets in Eugene were solid but they were the tour openers. I felt that way about the second night at shoreline in June. These guys are getting on so not everything is going to be epic. They are on fire considering what's been out there for the last ten years. Enjoy the ride and don't be too analytical about what's being put out there. Be glad you can still enjoy even a rough set. Five years from now you might be wishing for that.

First setlist is a raging cagin delight from what i am hearing now. I am ready to see the new york atlantic C show . glad its far away though
I wish the 1st sets could be approached in the same manner as the 2nd sets...like with most PL&F. Bleh on the song set and then the jam set. I'd like to see two big jam sets. I don't need no stinkin' primer set.
Nice on the Stagger Lee. I like how Furthur plays that track. And the 2nd set, minus Eclipse, looks like another beautiful rolling psychedelic lava set.

Rob your a peach! your like a miner picking up diamonds and jewels for people to cherish. you do the taper community proud .
Just back from the show. Meh. Had high points for sure. But didn't seem to flow very well. On paper set 2 looks good, but it lacked continuity. The Morning Dew was strong, as were several others like St. Stephen, but it seemed disjointed to me. I dunno. I'll have to sleep on it and see how I feel in the morning.
Further shows are all about song choice for me. I don't want to hear songs I saw the GD play a million times - no more Masterpieces, Wharf Rats, Candyman, Black Peter, Heaven's Door, etc.
Tonight was great for me - the second set was two hours long.
Yeah, everyone decided to sing their own last verse on St. Stephen, but it was one of those shows where you're sure the song they're playing is going to end the set and then they bust into something else and then something else and you keep thinking "They're gonna do ANOTHER one!?!? Cool!"
Epic set 2. Meltdown. Had to peel myself off the pavement. What can tomorrow bring???
>>>>Tonight was great for me - the second set was two hours long.
I'd like to say it twas a JAMMIN night...Hope you like Jammin too
Some reviews have me wondering if altitude is an issue for the band.
A second set I've only dreamed of experiencing live!
And at Red Rocks too!
...
Sounds incredibly good on the stream! Thank you very much Rob, you are a gem.
Taper Rob = MVP, as always.
Second set was smokin' hot for sure
best caution I ever saw, the boys were really enjoying the fast guitar part
John cooked on the Dew
I thought maybe the monitoring was off a little bit, as the band seemed a beat or two off of each other occasionally
Especially noticeable during Eclipse and Playing, but maybe it was just the mountain air playing with my ears
...10-1-2011 Furthur @ Red Rocks…1st Set was all Bobby...all the time...it was desultory & plodding & there was absolutely no flow or continuity...just one Bobby-picked song after another...Bobby was definitely in charge, leading the way & signaling…well, signaling whatever Bobby was signaling...& to top it off...Bobby's vocals were off key or flat or just plain awful...it was as if...there'd been a pre-show battle over control of the setlist between Bobby & Phil...and this is how they resolved it: OK, Bob...you take 1st Set...it's all yours...go for it!...I'll take 2nd Set...then we'll see how it goes & compare notes after the show...coming immediately after Fri's show...1st Set was a cosmic joke of an unmitigated disaster...it didn't daunt me in the slightest during set break...there was no way this band could play that plodding & flat & plain bad just one day after Fri's show...it had to be Bobby seizing control of 1st Set...in a pique, a sulk...I knew what was coming...Phil would completely take charge of 2nd Set...& this is what happened:

...an absolutely killer 2nd Set…the best Furthur set EVER...that I've had the pleasure of seeing live...just smokin', soarin', roarin' into the night at the Rocks...great jammin’, great flow, great transitions, great inspired creativity on the fly, in the moment…& just look at that 2nd Set setlist!...a set worthy of any great Dead-related incarnation...even the Rocks exhaled a huge sigh of relief...as in: now, that's what I'm talkin' 'bout!...I knew it was gonna be all Phil, all the time...but I had no idea 2nd Set was gonna be that good...it was the greatest disparity between quality of sets that I had ever seen...at any show...by anyone..."The Greatest Comeback Set" in the history of live music...ahh...a bit o’hyperbole...but why not?...the 1st Set was simply that bad...& the 2nd Set was simply that great...in comparison...I don't think Bobby should EVER be allowed anywhere near a setlist for a long, long time...if ever...in any band other than his own bands, Ratdog or whatever...he simply has no creative touch, no feel for it…I mean just look at that thing:

…let’s see…”I’m Bobby,” he thinks to himself…it’s Saturday night…guess what I’ll lead off with?…OMSN…amazing!…such inspired serendipity there…a bit of…”je ne sais quoi” creative genius…OK…what’s next…we’re at Red Rocks…in the foothills of the mountains…you guessed it…SOTOTW…outstanding…(I usually love me some Robert Johnson-inspired songs)…& then one uninspired song after another…consisting simply of songs that Bobby likes to sing…& he sang them poorly…”uninspired” someone commented above…that’s generous…it was shockingly bad…even awful…especially after the quality of Fri night’s show…& what this band is obviously capable of now…but…there is an upside to this…Bobby should never be given the keys to drive this band again…EVER…we saw the result…now Phil has definitively, unambiguously earned the right to drive this bus for as long as they want to play together…and to put the cherry on top of this adventure in “Who gets to control the setlist”…Bobby’s performance & vocals came back HUGE in the 2nd Set…he was back in the groove & on top of his game again…”Playin’ in the Band” being particularly memorable…during Phil’s hand-picked, beautifully inspired, thematic, with gorgeous flow & continuity 2nd Set…”Things go better with Phil”…should be this band’s moniker…and…ironically…Bobby gets showcased oh, sooo much better with Phil at the wheel…Bobby, we do love you…it’s just that…you should never be tossed the keys again…you’re just a bad driver…”Leave the driving to Phil”…and we’ll all be a lot happier…trust me…it’s astounding how much difference a set can make…we were all treated to a great, great show last night @ the Rocks…it’s just that the 2nd Set WAS the show…all gorgeous two hours of its inspired, continuous flow & sonic grandeur…pure, revelatory redemption for the “WTF?” of the 1st Set…I don’t know what the 1st Set was…it seemed to be simply an uninspired bunch of songs that some guy thinks he likes to sing & thought he’d just string’em together…it didn’t work…n’that’s an understatement…listen to the difference a set can make…just night & day…as if in alternative universes…that’s being kind…I’ll never forget this show…the “Biggest Comeback Set” in history…n’that means…EVER…
Bob has a simple mind that works linearly in two dimensions....
Phil has a complex mind that works multidimensionally in at least four dimensions.
I love them both.
Very observant Bennett. I wish I could share your enthusiasm for the 2nd set, but it was too little too late for me.
It's sad that we have to sit around and wait for the 2nd set to come. I really hate the formula. I disliked it when I was seeing the GD, and I dislike it even more now that PL&F tossed most of that junk out the window and hit it full steam from the git-go, showing us the ways of past in the new millennium.
I've said this elsewhere, but the setlist makers need to remember tracks like Stagger Lee and Crazy Fingers more often and how to forget The Beatles and Dylan tracks more often. Throw away 1st sets and throw away novelties aren't necessary with this great ensemble. Balls out from the start. Let's GO!
ps-I think Bob is convinced we enjoy, and want, the rote OMSN on Saturdays and the cheeseball chants off Not Fade Away.
Love the OMSN opener! Great place for it. First set closer even better but take it! Gotta remember....Bobby isn't picking the setlists!
Very sick second set! Ripping!
Wow, I'm surprised there aren't more comments on this night! Best night of music I've ever seen personally, and everyone on the band was on fire! Second set was intense psychedelia from head to toe.
Also, phils donor rap was incredibly emotional. Worth a listen.

love always, adam
1st set was the most boring set I've ever seen and much as I love Phil, the 2nd set was not much better in terms of tempo and band enthusiasm.
I heard terms like epic after the show and all I could think of was, yeah right epic disaster!
Band was not inspired at all!
2nd night in a row the parking lots were full 1.5 hours before the show and have to say parking was the biggest Cluster I've ever seen at the Rocks. Same as Friday night, if not worse.
So for me, at this point, two shows 1 good set and a couple of decent songs!
Saw more people sitting at this one than I had ever seen, including myself.
Morning Dew was the highlight for sure!
Back in Austin after our trip to Colorado.
Agree with all the comments on set one. We were 48th row, dead center. So our seats weren't great, but didn't suck either. The sound was washed out quite a bit by the wind, which had a big impact. It would be very bass heavy, then too much high end, then perfect, then back to crappy. Combined with the lackluster performance, it was .... disappointing. After the hype I’d heard about the sound at Red Rocks I was rather underwhelmed. (we didn’t go to the Friday show)
Set two was an outstanding set list with terrific performances, but you couldn't dance to a single one of them. The entire set was one jam after another and required lots of focus to keep up with. The sound was dramatically better due to the wind dying down and, I suspect, the sound guys getting their arms around things, but it still wasn’t enveloping me so connecting with the show was hard work at times.
But to my ears, it ebbed and flowed too often. What I mean by that is whenever a jam started to get some momentum and you thought things were about to really take off, it would slow down again, then a transition would appear, and you never really got off on the last one.
I had talked up these Red Rocks shows to my wife as being my ideal birthday present, that the band would make the shows special, that we couldn’t miss em’, yada yada.. So when I looked over mid 2nd set and she was sitting down yawning, I thought “Crap, this isn’t much fun for her”. It definitely impacted my perception of the set and was a distraction for me. She left saying “that show was ok, but nothing all that great. I had fun partying though.” Not what I was hoping for, AT ALL. The next day I promised her we’d see a good show you can dance to, while quietly thinking to myself that I hope I’m right.
All that being said, there were some moments we both agreed were good and got our attention. The St. Stephen was solid, Morning Dew was excellent, and the Uncle John's Band to finish was one of my faves... Still haven't heard the SBD yet. I've purchased it but need to find time to listen to it. The Sunday show has occupied what little time I've had to listen since I got back, and both me and my wife really enjoyed Sunday 10/2 from beginning to end. Better seats. Better sound. Daylight for set one. And of course a great performance by Furthur.
So I'm writing this review exactly one week later based entirely on my memory of the show and my personal experience from row 48. Set two may indeed be "EPIC", and someone in a shop in Breckenridge mentioned they thought it was the best live music they'd ever seen. To us, 10/1 just wasn't a great experience all around.
i'm a critic, but there was no horrible music at red rocks- some people need to realize that your favorite band, show or song is long gone and these guys are furthur, they are touring for themselves, and you can stay home and listen to old tapes if you are unable to enjoy yourselves in the present. i feel bad for people who cannot enjoy the beautiful opportunity furthur gives us to keep being heads. why don't you start your own band if you don't like theirs
It is now nearly 2 weeks out since this show, and here's my take, FWIW, after first being there, then listening to the soundboards. Austin, I was one row behind you and just a little off center, and agree that the sound quality got better in the second set. I had not thought about the wind, but that could well be it. The quality on the recordings is good throughout, though.
I personally liked the song selection in both sets, although some of the first set, especially Around and Around, was a little too down tempo for my taste. But I thought the music was excellent throughout, with some good but fairly short internal jams worked into the first set tunes, and lots of jamming throughout the second set. I also thought that JK was more prominent than in the earlier 3 shows that I have seen these guys do, and disagree with whoever said the first set was all Bobby. In fact, JK handled the vocals on three of the first set songs, and I thought his takes on Peaceful Valley (a song I first heard at a PL&F show with Joan singing) and Stagger Lee were both very good. Gimmie Some Lovin was the whole group on vocals. The first set songs that Bobby sang were at least Bobby songs, except for Next Time, and I thought he did ok on that. I also appreciated getting OMSN out of the way at the start. Again, the low point of the first set for me was Around and Around, a song which I generally like, but thought was done too slow.
The second set was a not-stop 2 hours of sometimes psychedelic melt, transitioning into and out of sometimes pretty dreamy jams. The set opening jam in particular seemed more melodic and sweeter than a lot of what Furthur has done in earlier shows. Again, it seemed to my ears like John was on top of his game, not at all like he was on a leash, if he ever was. Even though they really didn't break between any songs in the second set, some of the transitions were a little abrupt. There were also a couple vocal train wrecks in the second set (the last verse of St. Stephen for one, and Bobby jumping to the tree tops looking for his kite a verse too early on Playin') but WTF? It wouldn't be a shoe without an occasional untied string, and again, I thought the music was generally strong and lots of fun.
Of the 4 shows I've seen (one with Jay on percussion and the other female backup instead of Jeff, and the others with the current lineup), it would be hard to say which one was my favorite. They each had their moments, but the fact that this one was at Red Rocks, on a beautiful night with thousands of partying heads, and the overall quality of the playing, made for a really fun night. BTW, my wife, who is not at all on the bus, ended up having a really good time, and I think came closer to figuring out what we see in the music than she ever had before.
Definitely glad I got to go, and look forward to the next time, whenever and wherever that might be. Unfortunately, they haven't come to my part of the world yet, so I have to travel to catch a show.
