True Cali Set there....holy shit, sounded friggin awesome. I've heard Terrapin Suite before, but I thought they particularly nailed that and the Peggy-O Wow, not to mention the Steve Jobs He's Gone......Wow much improvement from last night (so I hear) glad you southern Cali folks had fun, drive safe and remember that your "cold" is not cold, it's just kinda hella cold.
Eyes - he's gone was the highlight.... Very sweet.... Looking forwar to one more in LA.
And it looks like the old man's, gettin on.
song selection on Set 1 looks better than set 2. In fact set 2 song selection not looking to good. Other than Eyes & Terrapin does not look like there is much room for exploratory jamming?
To me it seemed like a redemption show for Bob, and he did very well. For the most part the show sounded real good to my ears. Then again I was in a real good "space" heading in the doors!
Have hopes that Phil is going to jump up in the driver's seat tonight
First off, I am just a lurker here who jumps in when I go to a show once per year. I was smart ass with crossed arms in the 80s waiting for bust outs I never got. Loved the Dead but only have the time and patience to do Furthur once a year. Could not imagine going again tonight, much less on tour. It's a fun night out, but...
Bobby and Phil played very well. The setlist was OK for me, best at the very beginning, impressed by Jack Straw not opening or closing a set. My issue was with John. He seems like a nice guy but there is no gusto there. By all accounts he was too low in the mix, and his tone remained virtually unchanged - does he even own an envelope filter? I cringe when Bob or Phil (esp.) sings a Jerry song, but then John sings and it just comes across so shallow. Nice guy, great job he got, respect that he built DSO, but just seems like a placeholder to me.
This band is a shell of the GD, who I would go see night after night because Jerry, in all aspects, just JUMPED OUT AT YOU. It was just fine, well played, a fun night out, loved the $13 22 oz Firestone Union Jacks, looking forward to a quiet night at home tonight. Having said that, Monterey should be an unusual and cool scene.
Drove 300 miles south for through the rain for last night. Killer seats. good energy, things were smooth. First set was bouncy and well played. My 21 year old non dead head son said "this is legit." Last night's lyrics contained were many references to birds, sailors, rain, and uncertainty. Birds - Fish are rising up like birds, ain't no bluebird ever gets too heavy to sing, eagles fill the sky, wondering where the nut thatch winters, wings a mile long, there's a seabird crying, ghost wind howling. Rain - all night pouring but not a drop on me, it's been raining that Tennessee honey, rain fallin' down, your rain falls like crazy fingers. Sailors - phantom ships with phantom sails, you're a lost sailor, the sailor coming out again, Uncertainty - were they ever here at all, i don't know now, I just don't know if I'm going back again, what would your mama think, lie to me like I lie to you, things went down we don't understand, drifting and dreaming, maybe going on a feeling, sure don't know what I'm going for, you decide if he was wise. I probably missed a few more but you get the idea. The weather was awesome, no rain at all. The early 11 o'clock curfew had Bob tell Phil to rush the donor rap, then they played a 2 minute lame ass Johnny B Goode.
I forgot, "sullen wings of fortune beat like rain."
I think it's interesting that the 2 venues at which they've played the Terrapin Suite (actually thought this was the 1st time on this tour until I checked the setlists) so far are Utah and LA. Really surprised they didn't break it out at RR given the epic surroundings and the epic qualities of the suite. Still, glad they're spreading the great tunes all around. Hope you SoCal folks have a great show tonight.
Definitely a solid show. I'm excited to see what is in store for tonight. Got the Eyes of the World I wanted last night. Promised land tonight? Watching ushers try to kick people out of the middle aisle was hilarious.
Re: John "does he even own an envelope filter?"
Uh, how many (or few) shows have you been to?
"I cringe when Bob or Phil (esp.) sings a Jerry song, but then John sings....just seems like a placeholder to me."
Well, since Jerry is occupied at the moment, whom do you suggest sing and play Jerry parts?
"This band is a shell of the GD...because Jerry, in all aspects, just JUMPED OUT AT YOU."
Do you have ANY idea how many times Jerry mailed in, in the 80s and 90s? More often than not, and bandmates would attest to it. Didn't stop me from going, just as Jerry gone doesn't stop me from still going to enjoy the legacy of this great music. It's still enjoyable, if you have expectations that are based in reality.
If John is good enough for Bob and Phil. he is good enough for me. And, yes, Jerry can't play or sing tonight.
I thought you could be honest here. I qualified things by saying I'm not into this band enough to go alot, so I don't. The majority of GD shows I say were phoned in and, frankly, frustrating. With regard to Furthur, John is just not dynamic enough for me, and he did meet my already reduced expectations. Like I said, nice guy, proud of him, I had a good time. There is ALOT of talk here (by some) about how he is being held back, doesn't bring the fire, etc...maybe what I saw last night was just a manifestation of these things. He CERTAINLY is not loud enough, not good for a lead player.
Phil and Bobby are doing exactly what they should be doing with their treasured music, and playing amazingly well for their age. Of course they can't have Jerry and are doing fine. Those of you who love it enough to go alot, I'm happy for you.
One of the reasons I check out this site is that there are some funny, smart and honest people. My favorites are the ones who are all 3.
C'mon.
edit to say: majority of GD shows I "saw". Hope everyone enjoys the rest of the tour.

setlist:
i
They're not the Dead John
This band, the music and lyrics, moving and powerful, has changed US for the better. Be silent naysayers! This is the BEST live band on the planet. God bless FURTHUR and all deadheads everywhere! LOVE each other! Grateful Dead forever! See you in Buffalo thru indy;o)
11:00 curfews suck!!! Looks like a smokin' first set!
"They're not the Dead John"
This is incredibly difficult -dare say impossible- for a lot of people. Honestly, and not argumentatively, I don't get how they don't get that.
But I do agree, John could be A LOT more aggressive, or maybe rather PASSIONATE. Reminds me of Larry Campbell in that way. I wait for them both to be taken over by the music and to convey that passion through their playing and it not remain a personal thing (if it is a highly personal thing). Maybe they don't love it enough to be overtaken. I'm not them, so I won't say. And then maybe the soundman could help John fool me and just turn the guy UP!
I don't post as often any more, however, I feel like I have clarify...
John played in a different band before Furthur for 12 years... I saw that band quite a lot for the last three years John was with them. All this band played was Grateful Dead music. He most definitely loves this music enough to be 'overtaken' as you said.
I've seen him break through several times and it is incredible. However, this band was his... he co-founded Dark Star Orchestra.
While Furthur has now been playing for over 2 years, boundaries may still exist between what he feels like he can do before the nod of approval from Phil and Bobby. This is totally understandable. Of course, I do wish Phil would just wink at him every now and then and say "go for it".
But who knows, maybe Phil or Bobby have done this. This is a claim based on my observations.
But, what I can tell you for sure... that radiating spinning ball of energy exists within John and when it comes out its beautiful.
oh man, I know that gdtrfb>nfa is coming and I cant wait...NOV tour
how come there's no aud recording of this one on Archive.org?
Thought I'd check in and add my two cents.
We saw the Eugene shows (loved them), listened to Taperrobs copies of Montana, Utah, heard Red Rocks 1 & 2 after the fact, caught a live stream for RR3. (Had a good friend at that show who ended up having the best time at any show in years!) Heard the Vegas broadcast on Sirius so really felt like I had been plugged in for the whole little tour and was excited to be doing the LA shows.
The Music Never Stopped opener was solid and fun, and everything that followed was tight and polished. I thought the Magnolia Mountain really soared. (Those who think John lacks passion in his presentation might want to pay closer attention! He may not be loud enough, but he certainly brings the heart, IMO.) New Speedway made me dance, and closed a real nice set.
The second set took off for me at the Eyes>He's Gone. Lost Sailor>St. was good, Crazy Fingers got swirly, and the Beatles tune was fun. But I thought it all took off at the Eyes. From there through Terrapin was excellent to my ears. And the GDTRFB rocked right along - not extreme, but moving! Maybe the fastest JB Goode ever?
All in all, an excellent show. The first set had a nice flow to it, and the second set was plenty fun before it got deep and fun. I thought it was worth thr price of admission and would gladly go again in a heartbeat!
One more thing - because I have to say it -
I read John Garnetts post while on the road, and it kept pestering me. I thought I could post a review and leave it at that, but I can't.
John brings up a point of view that is so contrary to mine that I must comment!
For me, the shows were always about the opportunity to listen and dance to music I can't find anywhere else. I mean, there never was anything like a Grateful Dead concert. It wasn't a cliche, it was a fact! People who went to shows only to stand with their arms crossed waiting to be entertained were missing the point as far as I was concerned. For me, going to shows was sort of like paddling out in big surf -it took all of my attention and full participation to maximize the day's fun. Dancing with the Grateful Dead was very much like surfing, it had a similar flow in my mind.
Saying you had been to a show and could not imagine doing another one is sort of like saying,"I've been to the beach once." or "No thanks, I've already seen a sunset." I tend to think every show is a precious opportunity to participate in a live music community experiment and am thankful for each show I get to see. This rant is not to slam Garsurf, to each his own, I just felt the need to comment.
Yes, to each his own, and that exactly was my point. I fully disclosed that I was a bit jaded (arms crossed guy) at many shows that were just not often fully realized due to later years issues with the GD. But I am also extremely indebted to what there music has done for me.
I was just giving my own review and feeling about things; to each his own. Even when he was checked out, Jerry's performance floated on top of the whole mix. To me it's almost like John K is going through a filter - Bob/Philter? At least start by JUST turining him up!
Whatever it is...yes, this is a very good band. I know the GD canon well enough to say that their interpretations are worth, in my busy life, seeing 1-2 times per year...the beach, I go much more often.
When I do go to a show I have a great time and exude happiness to those around me, but am also deeply considering what I am hearing. Isn't there room for people like me?
Of course there is, John! And I agree that turning JK up would be a dramatic improvement.
See you next time by, NYE maybe? I'll be the guy dancing in back - see ya then or on down the road. Either way, be good, be well, and enjoy the days!
Been sitting in my office all afternoon recording my grades at a leisurely pace. I'm checking out this show, and I really think it has its high points. Bobby sounds good on Lost Saylor, and Phil really gets with it during Saint. Now I'm headin' for Crazy Fingers.
