Another sparkling sunny day on the coast! Soaking up the sun and waves at Asilomar right now. We've been so spoiled by the weather on this tour - perfect at Cuthbert, Red Rocks, and now Monterey. Here Comes Sunshine opener? See you all later :-)
Okay, I will start the OMSN placement prediction game: open set II.

End the tour with Sat Nite? Weak. Close 1st set. Loved it (love may be a bit strong but kicked things off nicely) to open the show at RR last sat.
Just heard there was a bit of a scene down there in one of the lots with cops and some loser gate crashers... Be careful down there phriends!
I never said I want to have them play OMSN as the encore. I just said it was a possibility. 8-) (Not that this is the end of the tour)
Can't wait. Do believe that there will be a stream here: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/eight2theuniverse
At least they said it would be streaming tonight... Sound was a little fuzzy last night but it was better then only reading the set list.

E; One More Saturday Night
Thank you all goodnight
Great Show! Thank you!
Crazy trippy crowd - great scene!

so how was the 11 sandwiched in there?
funny E????
bob had an idea....
What a psychedellic blast! They dialed it in and delivered it. Crazy, fun scene. Thank you Phil & Bobby & band! Loved, loved, loved it.
Just home from the show and it was solid but not the best I've seen this band deliver. The first set was a little clunky for me with the highlights being Comes a Time and the jam in Throwing Stones. School Girl never found a groove and Bob's tempo on Friend of the Devil never matched what the rest of the band was doing vocally. Althea was good but seemed to move very slow. I know others have complained about some tempo issues and this was the first show I noticed it but it may have more to do with the sound in the fairgrounds vs. other locations I have seen Furthur. Second set had an amazing song selection but the transitions seemed off for most of the night. The intro to Truckin was weird but not in a good way. It just seemed like they kept slamming the songs together trying to make a segue way and it didn't seem to work as well as past shows. Morning Dew was very strong but still lacked a little punch and didn't measure up to the one at Shoreline in June. Help Slip 11 Franklin's was fun but again the transition between Slip and 11 and 11 back to finish the Franklin's seemed force and not natural. Saturday Night encore made it easier to beat the crowd out so it was welcomed for me. Speaking of the crowd, it was a crazy night at the Fairgrounds and I was shocked to find out it was a sellout when I arrived to buy tickets. Had to hustle for half hour or so but found a couple for me and my wife. The security was completely clueless and was the worst I have seen as far as keeping some kind of order before the show outside. The line to get in was at least an hour long and you had to feel sorry for those that waited in it because most of the crowd with me included just snuck past security and entered the show. They didn't let people take in stuff that was allowed the night before and that had lots of folk making the return walk back to the car to drop stuff off and parking was a joke. Despite the fact that this is the most negative review I have done of Furthur I still had a blast. Love being and dancing with family and any chance to hear Phil drop bombs is a treat. Thank you for a real good time and can't wait to check them out again.
PLEASE TURN JK UP!!!
It's like after Brent passed, those first couple of shows in Richfield- the guitars were turned up much more than previously. It made a HUGE DIFFERENCE!!!
just turn the guy up, he deserves it and dammit I need him to be a lot louder in order to be astounded properly.
"COME ON MAN"
So, I guess I won the OMSN placement prediction game with OMSN encore. Is there a major prize in play here? 8-)
Here's my quick review. Had good seats in the very small stands on JK's side. Once I saw how crowded it looked on the floor, I was glad I did. I needs my space, yo.
Set 1
Feel Like a Stranger - felt too slow at first, ripped at the end pretty nice overall
Althea - Good version, JK a little off time on vocals.
Good Morning Little Schoolgirl - Didn't care for the arrangement much, sounded "bar bandy" to me. JK tried to save it, but crowd gave it a courtesy cheer at the end. Wasn't great.
No More Do I - meh, ok. not my fav
Friend Of The Devil - Pretty good, Sunshine's baackups sounded a little country which was kinda cool and kinda not, JK ripped pretty good.
Viola Lee Blues - Awesome, obviously the Monterey Pop tie-in made this feel super cool to see. JK going for it. Was forced to wonder if they were thinking about it/Monterey Pop or if it was just another time playing Viola for them. They must have a little.
Comes A Time - nice version w/JK and Sunshine clearly having practiced.
Throwing Stones - Good overall, smokin' tight jam that was satisfying.
Set 2
Golden Road - well played, high energy, great jam.
Shakedown Street - Strong version, different take on the jam at the end at first, then more standard.
Truckin' > fun, good...Truckin'.
Let It Grow > got very rippin', good times.
All Along The Watchtower > I really enjoyed it, I guess I was too funked up to realize Bob botched the worked/skipped last verse? (according to my friend.)
Morning Dew > knew it would be great and it was. Shoreline was probably a little better tho.
Help On The Way > very good
Slipknot! > excellent
The Eleven > SURPRISE! enjoyed the surprise, good version, well executed.
Franklin's Tower - great, JK really making an effort.
Saturday Night - was hoping for a surprise, but made the best of it.
I thought Saturday was light years better than Fridays show.
The second set Saturday was one of the tightest sets I have ever seen Furthur play! The transition to Truckin' was strange, but everything else just flowed perfectly! Incredibly powerful Morning Dew,then I couldn't believe they went into Help on the Way! I also got the Viola Lee Blues I had been waiting for,and it was a perfect choice to go in to Comes A Time! Both nights were excellent, but I thought the second night was much tighter! The first night was really pscyhedelic! I hope they play there again, love Eddieboy!
I'm with Eddieboy--hope they play there again. That was a fun little venue. I would go there in an instant for another show.
Listening to http://www.archive.org/details/Further2011-10-08.F urther-Monterey-10-08-11
Just listened to Let It Grow and an amazingly smooth transition into Watchtower. This is a tasty aud (recorded directly in front of the booster speakers behind the soundboard).
Saturday set II was one of the finest sets I've heard this band play, light years ahead of the weak performance on Friday. Comes a time, Shakedown, Help > Slip > Eleven were all fantastic!! Good times and a great venue all around!!
What a great weekend. What folks have said up here is correct... First night was a little looser, and way more open/psychedelic, owing largely to the setlist. They were reaching the first night, and despite some chunkiness, there were no trainwrecks. Good time, far out.
Second night, very well executed. This is the tight band that can just drop perfectly crafted Dead songs one after another... Very much enjoyed it, but it was a little more restrained than Friday.
Overall, the crowd was great and well-behaved (owing, I think, to the dominance of L over E on the lot, and the lack of cheap beer inside), and I didn't see too much dark shit. Big, loving, dancing crowd, pretty fired up for a Bay Area show, IMHO. Security was lax, at best, but everybody stayed nice. The cops got pretty harsh second night with the exit scene, so I'm not sure how welcoming the town would be in the future.
Went to the 3 Red Rocks shows, and despite the excellent (certainly phenomenal on paper) 2nd set of Saturday's show, and a pretty solid Sunday show, I had more fun at the Saturday show at Monterey. The 1st set just seemed so much better than the three at Red Rocks (perhaps my expectations for that venue were off the charts - 1st time after 26 years) and the show just seemed consistently good->great the whole way through. Certainly, the venue didn't have anything to do with that perception, though we did have some decent seats up in the grandstand on JK's side. Perhaps being "back home" in the Bay Area (well, at least closer to home) put me in a more relaxed mood. Very solid show in my opinion with the standouts being Viola, Comes a Time, Let it Grow, Dew (not quite as shredded as Red Rocks', perhaps), Help->Slip->Eleven->Franklin's, and many other solid renditions.
As for the venue, don't hold your breath on Furthur (or any other Dead-related formation) returning to the Fairgrounds. Judging from the response of the hotel manager where I stayed, it sounds like there will be a number of local merchants who will voice a strong opinion against having the band back at this venue again. Could be he was just one of the extremely uptight ones, but I have to assume there were others who felt this way as well. Kind of interesting when the motels back right up to the fairgrounds - seems like an odd arrangement to begin with (well much more so with 6000-plus freaks wandering about).
We were at the Embassy Suites and you wouldn't have noticed the band was even in town. Dennys late on Friday night was a hoot.
How was the Embassy Suites? Good room price? Would you stay there again?Just wondering,Eddieboy! PS I was at Seaside Inn in Seaside. It was cheap but nice, cranked music both nights all night long, and never got one complaint! I dig Embassy Suites, nice chain! The lady where I was asking asked me what a hippy was! I told her a music lover with long hair like myself!
Yea, it was a nice room, with separate living area to watch football and whatnot. We got it right after the show was announced and it was $165/night. Not bad if you're splitting it. Came with free breakfast buffet and happy hour cocktails which probably knocked off $75 per day on the rate
I paid $65/night at the place I stayed, but it wasn't nearly as nice as The Embassy Suites. The lady who checked me in was asked by her friends and fellow hotel people why she wasn't charging more for rooms! That is why I book rooms and buy tickets as soon as shows are announced so they don't sell out or have a chance to raise prices on me!
