This is for Emerson. Are you saying that John was out front with his guitar? That would be so great because I haven't heard that when I've been there. In Monterey the first night you could barely hear him. Second was a little better, but no where close to where he should be as the lead guitar.

Brent...that's what it seemed like from the stream to me. JK definitely sounded louder and aggressive. But that's one show from and audience stream.

Grateful Dead music needs lead guitar and rhythm guitar.

Got to Portland right about 5:30 last night, walked to the Civic Center and got in line about ten minutes before the doors opened. Went through what seemed like a relatively relaxed security and found only about 15 people in the arena. ended up front row against the rail in front of what would become Phi on his "new side." Loved being so close though it made needed trips to the bathroom next to impossible. Met lots of cool people up front and short of the people who tried to cram themselves up front it was an excellent scene. Unfortunately we were also in a position to see 6 totally passed out people carried out by security (lets control our drugs of choice a little better, people).
I thought the first set was strong. Highlight for me were a solid passenger opener, a fun Come Together, smokin, smokin (did I say smokin') Deal and what seemed like a bonus song of brown Eyed Women after what appeared to be a Feel like a Stranger 1st set closer.
Though the set list of the second set was incredible. For my particular taste it got a little too spacey during the Dark Star and Other One, though the idea of seeing St Stephen, Dark Star, Stephen, 11, Other One was pretty amazing. I also love little cool set list things like the China 2nd set opener and Rider closer. Both were also fun, bouncing right along.
Overall a great time, awesome seats, great company (from the people around me to my unbelievable girl friend!!!), tightly played jams. I started seeing the dead back in 83 and though I would never say it is the same, in some ways i would say its better (ex. unpredictable nature of the set lists) and I cant really think of a place a would have rather been last night. As it said on the bumper sticker I bought after the Show, "Jerry would love this band"

Dark Star is really quite out there at this show, possibly the spaciest, weirdest one yet from Furthur. and of course diggin the Mountain Song placed in a set full of gems...
