Another prankster night at venerable MSG - yes indeedy "what a long strange trip it has been"! Expecting a Cryptical Envelopment > drums > The Other One at this show. Do enjoy the sights and sounds of Manhattan and be aware that Big Brother is watching your every move, boys and girls.
Kenneth Elton "Ken" Kesey (September 17, 1935 – November 10, 2001) I believe Adam hit the nail on the head. We should be in for a doozy !!
Take Adam's advice and DO NOT do anything inappropriate on the streets, particularly if it involves smoking weed. There will be a ton of undercovers patrolling just for that. They will toss you in jail for taking one-hit, even of the total amount you have is only 2 hits.
Separate from that, plenty of tickets getting dropped on Ticketmaster for anyone that doesn't have one.
Have fun!
I heard a rumor today from by buddy Larry Hossman, a man very well respected in inner GD circles, that we will be seeing special guests. Anyone hear about guests?
Crosby and Stills are in town, but they have a show that night also, I thought.
PS It's a Full Moon tomorrow...
I think the Garden will rock! St. Stephen....in and out of the Garden he goes....................
David Crosby and G. Nash played a mini set at Occupy Wall Street last night!
People, it's no joke....don't smoke weed anywhere between 7th-8th ave. and 31st to 33rd st., which is where MSG sits. The cops love to bust people, and NYC makes hundreds of thousands of dollars each year from fines for this. NYC's laws are not civilized when it comes to smoking marijuana.
Now, as far as guests go.....and this is just my selfish opinion, but I'd be just fine with no guests and a show as hot as Portland last week, or when Furthur was here a year ago. It being a school night I'm expecting a crowd rarin' with enthusiasm.
Not to hog the board, but hey i got up very early today and am so fired up for this show tonight. By my count 92 songs played thus far on tour, not one repeat. WHO ELSE DOES THAT? A: NO ONE!
By my estimation tonight we could very well see Shakedown, Alligator, MInglewood, Queen Jane, Row Jimmy, and Box of Rain. I'd settle for Shakedown and Alligator as my choices.
My only true prediction for tonight is a dozen people will be on this board looking for a stream, and there ain't many streams in NYC, just the dirty ol' Hudson and E. River, LOL
loser candyman peggy o jack a roe.

Hey Now fellow Heads - I hope all is well. I have a question re: MSG.
I have seats in one of the Guest Booths wayyyyyyy up top with the crap-ass view & sound, and I also have seats in Orch Sec A row 20. (Stop whinning, y'all wish you had this dilema).
Is there any way to go from the Vendor Booth up top into the Orchestra?
I wanna eat, drink & be 'merry' AND maybe do the Shakedown shuffle to the Orch by swiping my seats booth seats for the Orch seats for a while. Can it be done? :-D THANKS
Brian, looks like you and I figured out half the show. Looks like we both forgot High Time.
So, to you Furthur folks, how about Dark Star v1>Alligator>Dark Star v2> the Eleven> Caution>Cryptical>the Other One>Cosmic Charlie. Do it for Ken!
Ya don't think they are gonna save The Eleven until 11/11/11?
Greg I'd imagine they will, hadn't thought of that, or would it be too obvious?
How 'bout an old school Playin'>UJB>Playin' Jam>Morning Dew>UJB Reprise>Playin' Reprise to end the second set?

Brian, I'm with you but haven't seen Alabama Getaway thus far on set lists and could see an old fashioned Alabama>Greatest Story opener. In which case I see Shakedown opening second set.
I think it is soooo obvious that they will play it on 11/11/11. How can't they. Folks have waited a few decades to see The Eleven played on 11/11/11!!!!!!
Syracuse has a long history with this band, so let the folks up there have their 11 on 11/11/11
Morning zoners. Wish I was able to go, but damn work is in my way. What can you do. gotta pay the bills. As an additional note to the police presence tonight ZONERS BEWARE. NYPD has a stop & frisk policy that allows the police VERY wide leeway in searches. Any activity considered by the officer to be questionable gives the officer reason to frisk you. We all know that in the past MSG has been for the most part very hospitable to heads, but this is not their policy. Stop & frisk has been questioned by a number of legal organizations because it has targeted mostly minorities & in NYC, we are a minority & of course an easy target. So far from what I understand many of these cases have been upheld in court. this of course seems to me to be unconsitiutional, but this is not the issue at hand. Don't wanna be too much of a buzz kill, but please take care. Enjoy the show everyone & I'll be keeping an eye on the discussions & stream (hopefully).
I love this: Tie Dye Empire State Building
As always, setlist clues can be found in the Furthur rotation graph:
http://www.thebarnpresents.com/furthur
As an additional note, the NYPD presence may not be as severe as it was @ the best buy shows since they kinda have their hands full w/ the OWS folks.
ESB lights are gonna be lit up in tye-dye colors again tonight!!!
Playin in Uncle John's Dew........
i'm always afraid to post songs i want the band to play so i won't. for what it's worth let's up the bar here a bit. it is nyc after all. but there are PLENTY out there that could be played and without any expectations, i'm hoping for the best. i remember radio city shows this past march and was blown away, ats all i'll say
Chuckm.......don't underestimate the NYPD, where there's money to be made bustin' people they'll be there. NYPD is a fine tuned, well oiled money makin' machine. Be careful y'all!! And yes, MSG is not as bad as Best Buy, which I hope Furthur never plays again.
Gregory, I hear ya'. Got a little carried away there in hopes they're totally ON tonight, and have IT in abundance. Here's to a great show.
due up tonight:
Bertha

This first set sounds like a second set already... How are the going to be able to top this in the second set?
(~);-}
This is great! What a well put together first set!
Sounds like a sing along nite ....
While the stream is muddy... it also has character. Nothing like the crowd singing in unison at the Garden.
Great UJB.
To note, Eyes was also played in the first set at the last MSG show, last November.
Is Larry still playing?
You know they'll find a way, Capt'n!

A quick fast forward to TRob's post to check out the lamps trimmed and burning and it absolutely blew me away!! Would have had to pick me up off the mat if I'd been there! i agree, i have it on now !! as Bob is on phone with me and running thru the streets of NYC for train...he gave it an honerable mention, and said listen to it tonight...
Epic through and through. The boys never disappoint in NYC. Tonight they blew the roof off of the place completely and thoroughly! Whew!
EPICEIPICEPICEPIC through and through...totally and completely agreed...unbelievably heartfelt by us all...One for the history books....RIP Ken Kesey...11//10/2001.
Rumor on the lot and with phil going stage left, this may be the last furthur tour. We may not see them until the 50th anniversary of The Dead. However it goes, what a long strange trip its been fellas.
"from the land of the HOTT TUNA keep your lamps.wow MS G always rocks"
as much as I love hot tuna, this song goes back quite a bit further than that...
Just got Home..

The New Garden.
The Old Garden used to be about meeting up with people. The New Garden is about avoiding people. The Old Garden had a pair of rings around the arena to travel. Now, it's got an alley on either side in the 300's that ends on both the 7th & 8th Avenue sides. Much like casinos in Vegas, you are shuttled through the concessions area to get between your seats and your friends. As for the "promenade," don't go during halftime. The Old Garden had lines, but there was also space to hang back by the wall and talk about the first set or just watch a MSG Dead Crowd in all its glory. With the New Garden, it's become a mosh pit. There wasn't any anger, but you gotta snake and maneuver your way. The Old Garden, you could lolligag you way around and you never knew who you might run into. It reminds me about what Patrick Moynihan said about the old Penn Station. "We used to arrive in this city like kings, now we scurry in like rats." (sic, total paraphrase but I hope the gist is there)
Very quietly, with the absence of NBA and with the Rangers being the only game in town, James Dolan has destroyed The Garden. Gone is everything familiar about MSG. There are still a few of the old ushers around. But, much like the Beacon, it's only a matter of time before they'll be gone too. I'm left with memories of the Garden. That was not the Garden tonight. It's got new tiled floors, some new food stands to open up in the coming weeks, plenty of liquor stands around, but it ain't the Garden. Maybe someday it'll have its own charm, but right now, it's a spiffed up Nassau. I love Nassau. It's a shithole. Many great times there. I just hope that somehow new memories can be made at the New Garden.
Going to see a rock n' roll show at MSG was seeing music in the same building as The Song Remains The Same, The Concert for Bangladesh, The Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary, 10/11/83, 9/18/87, The Other Ones 2002. That building no longer exists.
I can't wait to see DSO at the Nokia.
P.S. Security is either so new that they don't know what they're doing or so old that they don't give a shit, but you could do anything you wanted in the seats tonight. That was a plus.
I agree that the building has lost it's charm. I also thought the sound was not as good as it used to be. Stayed in my seat so I can't comment on the hallway scene but on the way out I did see the cut-off hallway.
Love that dress Teresa wore. (((((Goddess)))))
dj - dont forget 'get yer ya-ya's out'
"Barnburner" comes to mind. Wow.
DJ, you're right, security as lax as I've ever seen them.
Great show. Larry was awesome. Red dress was out of place.
Great work boys.

>>The New Garden.
just an FYI: the renovation of the "New Garden" has 2 more years to go. the corridors are blocked in certain areas due to the on-going construction.
BTW, those a little confused about the section layouts in relation to the stage; the stage is now on the opposite end of the arena
Fun show. No major highlights for me though Eyes was excellent and the whole first set had a nice jam session feel to it. Sugar Magnolia started off a little rough but they got it together for Scarlet. Tennessee Jed was off the charts well done but as it is not one of my faves I wouldn't call it a highlight but it was really, really well done. Larry's fiddle was a welcome addition to Uncle John's Band.
Up until the old spiritual that Teresa sang it was all Grateful Dead -- no covers, no solo stuff, no new stuff. It was a greatest hits night which I sometimes like but they didn't lay it on heavy enough for me. If you're going to go classic, bring on the China>Rider, Dark Star and Help>Slip>Franklins, et al -- gimme some long jams.
Really this show just reinforced what an amazing musician Phil is. He sang three full songs, Phil vox only, as much solo singing as anybody last night plus harmony and back up on a bunch of songs and he was great -- sounded great voice challenges and all. He sang great, he played great, he was into it. It makes me want to see him play a new configurations with new and different songs. Nothing against Furthur or the Grateful Dead catalog, I just want to see something different from him before he hangs it up.
I hadn't seen an Attics in a long time so that was a fine way to end though I knew it was coming even before the lights went down for the first set. From our seats we could see into the curtained off "back stage" area and it's hard to miss Larry Campbell. We could see Teresa too so we knew some of what was coming before the show started.
Anyway, fun show. The new garden is ok. It seems to me like they just put up paneling all over the place. I didn't walk around at all so I didn't really get a feel for it. As long as I can take the subway home, I will go to shows there.
Outstanding show.
Most interesting Box of Rain ever; I've never heard it stretched out like this before.
Mind-bending The Other One.
The Eleven tease in St. Stephen was sublime.
Theresa is a highlight in her own right.
Larry Campbell is The Master.
Best Furthur show I've seen.
The show rocked last night. It was a tip of the hat to some special moments over the years. The last time a scarlet and fire was played in that venue was October of 1994- by the GD.
NYC always brings out the best in the dead!!
I had not heard Sugar>scarlet since 4.27.91 Vegas...very rare combo. This may have been my final show- crazy if it's true.
Jerry and Phil switched sides for the last time around 82. So Phil is really only going back to his old spot. Good looking show on paper.
"BTW, those a little confused about the section layouts in relation to the stage; the stage is now on the opposite end of the arena"
really? didn't seem that way to me...
EPIC - enuf said. Was a fabulous special night at the Garden - energy level from the crowd and band was at a frenzied height. After the show, most of the band (I think all but Phil) hung out for a few minutes in the side tent, and then I had my first (and probably last) Bobby moment... I said.. Bob... Bobby...(he didn't look up)... thanks for the beautiful evening..(then, he did look up and lit up a big smile and said thanks)...
Sunshine Daydream!
Outfuckingstanding!!! A very special night up there with 11-11-07 nokia Teresa blew the roof off the garden last night!
Outfuckingstanding!!! A very special night up there with 11-11-07 nokia Teresa blew the roof off the garden last night!
What a great night. The crowd's energy was fantastic. Great section with a lot of veterans, sprinkled with the youngin's dancing their hearts out. Lotta fun.
Re: Last night. Hope I don't bore anyone to tears with this diatribe. Last night I wetn to this show thinking about Ken Kesey, the man who gave us Furthur. Think about it...that bus and this band, the connection. This has always been important to me, the history. So thinking about Ken, and acid tests and wishing I could have attended an acid test....last night I think I did. Now mind you I've been to a lot of shows in 30 years, and had various substances in the psychedelic family. After all these years I still like the stuff and it can enhance the show. Heck this music was made for mind expansion. Not saying here it's necessary by any means..not encouraging/discouraging. But last night was something totally different. I casually joked to a friend that I was going to see if I could pass another acid test, but last night I think was the real deal. My mind was blown. Not one aspect of the show really stands out, it was just a blur. From the opening notes of Sugar Mag I was slightly taken aback. Part of this comes from the years of Grateful Dead shows and how structured they always seemed to be in the 80's. I had a flashback to New Years '84 when they'd traditionally start after midnight countdown and break into Sugar Mag, then it was Scarlet so that's where that flashback came from. It just seemed odd opening with Sugar Mag, and the rest of the first set was it seemed over in a flash. Then the house lights came up it seemed the break was over in a split second. Shakedown I'd been expecting as second set opener which was cool. I have no recollection of Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning, or Larry and Theresa being on stage. I'm not really sure......I've never experienced a show like last night, like anything else in life. I didn't see Gumby, or the Ice Cream kid, or God.....it wasn't like that, but my mind is blown forever it seems. Man, the Garden seemed so huge. One thing I did notice was the lighting wasn't as spectacular as it was last year at the Garden, but hey lights cost a lot of money. Anyway, thanks for everyone who was there to have experienced what I'm still trying to describe. Anyway, I just had to share this. Btw, thanks Phil, that was the best Box of Rain since they brought it back in Hampton '86.....I'd say that was the highlight for me.
One more thing, thank you to the Garden staff for letting us do what we wanted, within reason of course. Unlike the Nokia/Best Buy......please Furthur, NEVER play there again, imho.
this looks like the show of the tour so far
Looks Awesome! DMcG - I hear ya 'bout waitin' for tune. Mine was only 13 years and it was Playin' -- a personal favorite. Hadn't seen i since I missed The Other One's open with it (well as the Rusted Root and Tuna)at the Denver Furthur Fest in '98 -- a case of musta had a little too muich too fast ;-) -- and I've seen every post-Jerry Dead combo to come through Denver since then. So I wrote a request email to the band at band@furthur.net with the whole sob story asking if they would please play PITB at Red Rocks, parituluarly at the Saturday show, since my better half would be there that night only (tho' she had to bag it due to our kiddo's cold). Don't know if my request had anything to with it, but if ya check the 10-1-11 setlist, thar she blows. Can't hurt, eh?
NICE ^^^^^ thanks for sharing!!!!
A simply Wonderful show last night which really hit me in all the right way places. First set was practically flawless and full of energy. Inspired and lengthy Jams in set 2 and Larry Campbells contributions were amazing and took the Jams over the top. It was was MSG afterall and having seen The Dead there 30 plus times, it always brings back fond memories and flashbacks even though The Garden looks a bit different now after all the renovations. Where else can you witness a vast sea of Dead heads from 18 to 60 dancing next to eachother grooving to Dead classics from 40 years ago? It all seemed to work last night - at least for me.
The Shakedown>Other One>St Stephen trifecta in Set 2 was as good as it gets for this band - In fact I had always wished The Dead could have played "The Other One" this way during The Brent years - sort of deliberate at first and then just exploding with that signature Phil((Bomb!))that takes it into the stratosphere. It never felt rushed, just kind of "Lets see where we can take it" kind of feel. "Let the music play the band" I guess. Let's face it, Phil's bass is such huge PART OF THE Dead's signature sound and no song showcases it as much as The Other One does. Phil is still a force to be reckoned with, thundering bass lines that shook the Garden top to bottom. I believe for a few minutes they sort of went into an uptempo "Spanish Jam" that was almost tribal in nature. "St Stephen" was absolutely Epic, tight as a drum and powerful as all hell. "Unbroken Chain and Days Between were simply sublime. Everything seemed "punchy" last night, very little noodling and meandering - everything had purpose. Yeah, Bobby occasionally has his moments I guess, like almost missing the "Just like New York City" line in "Ramble On Rose", but would it really be Bob if he didn't? There were tons of musical dynamics last night or "tension and release" which is what really separates the great improvisational bands from the average ones. Larry Campbell really added so much last night - one of the best and well rounded musicians out there. He knows when to play, when to lay back and let the song breathe - and then knows when to let it rip. A real genius-level player on both guitar and fiddle. They guy is a gem! In fact, I think my favorite Phil and Friends lineup was with Larry and Barry Sless on guitar. Anyway, Hope you guys had as great a time as I did, sure was a fun night! Bright lights, Big City, GREAT music with many friends, doesn't get any better.
i am loving Larry's fidd on Uncle Johns Band right now.... it really is a most beautifully mystical magical instrument, esp when played with his passion and level of experience.
...perfect accompaniment to my second cup o tea on this fine day ~
Gotta love the Sugar mag>Scarlet opener & the Fire>SSDD to close. a sandwich worthy of a place @ the Carnegie Deli. Didn't get to listen yet, but looks like a hot night in the city. Waitin on AC w/ high hopes. glad not to see horror stories w/ the NYPD.
I did send 'em a thank you just in case -- never heard back :-)
the renovation of the "New Garden" has 2 more years to go>>>
yeah you could tell it wasnt done....did seem sterile though...
about the show, cluster fuck to get in, and i also had a slight acid meltdown, just couldnt get it going, too much visuals and sounds and everything was too much..... idiots next to us, security being assholes, too high etc...but we went up higher, found a perfect spot with perfect people (hot women always helps), no security, space to dance etc....as 'so many roads' started i smiled and had a fantastic time and show, great sound up higher and the vibe was so much better....just shows you...."you just gotta poke around..."
highlight if the night =
So Many Roads
Box Of Rain
&
St Stephen>
Unbroken Chain
&
Keep Your Lamps Trimmed And Burning>
Fire On The Mountain.
&
Attics Of My Life
I have only missed one garden show out of all the boys have played here and have never had a problem with n.y.p.d.. What horror stories were you expecting?
Up top was the place to be !! Nice and dark ,no hassles at all, light up as you please. good times!!!
willie, NYPD is all about making money for the city. Ever been to Best Buy? The cops are all over taking people out to the paddy wagon left and right. This ain't the Dinkins days anymore.
the good setlist maker showed up
Eddie's review totally nails last nights show. I really don't have anything to add except the following two thoughts:
* any of us fortunate enough to catch Teresa Williams at a Levon Helm Ramble knew from the opening note that she was going to raise the roof on the Rev. Gary Davis' (by way of Hot Tuna)"Keep Your Lamps..."
* the people who have reservations about last night's show are the same ones who we heard complaining as we walked out that night that the Cornell show was "too short".
still fuzzy and wobbly from last night and still having images and thoughts flash through my brain from it... super fun time in the garden... lots of highlights... they always bring it out for New York... wish I was going to more!
I had a fantastic time Thursday. The show was very fun, not epic, but really good. Epic would have been Space Dark Star or something truly weird for Ken.
The new Garden still has the energy of the old and that's more a function of the crowd that the venue. It's new configuration defineately confines one's ability to roam. I was particularly concerned with behind the stage. With no aisle there is nowhere to dance. This stole from the fully round experience that we are used to in the garden. Enough on the garden.
Furthur is a great band. Period. They play with passion and expertise. IMO Tennessee Jed was as good as anything I've seen. The peaks came in waves and the last wave crashed into my psyche. To say the least it rang my bell. I was in complete musical ecstasy.
The rest of the show was great with two 'x' factors. First was energy of the crowd and the desire of the musicians to keep up with it. In other words, New York has the energy and our boys bring it. Second, the Campbell family. It was very obvious that Phil was thrilled to be sharing the stage with Larry. He was keying on him especially during Uncle John's with the biggest smile on his face. I don't understand how anyone thinks these guys are gonna retire. They are having a great time and they are great.
Great show with great friends.
Peace and Love to you all.
Larry amped it up!! I dont c anybody talking about Kadlicek-thought Larry brought him to life-the dude is a little too wax museum-y for me-especially when he sings-but Larry inspired him to some really authentic highs.
The wild thing is- me and the missus were talking about what we'd like to hear and damn if the setlist didnt just mirror our wishes!
Really got greatful deaded at this show -totally immersed in the great love beast unleashed by the wonderful jams
by the way-Bobby sings like he's 17-and I'm still pissed off at Guitar Player magazine for leaving him off "the 50 grreatest rythym guitar player list!!
> I'm still pissed off at Guitar Player magazine for leaving him off "the 50 grreatest rythym guitar player list!!
didn't know guitar player had such a list, but man,
bob weir is the most inventive rhythm guitar player of all time - the 1972-1974 period is simply the most creative I've ever heard rhythm guitar - including jazz guys - it's just totally unique
guitar player sucks up to their readers
What a great night! The band was sooo tight...no major flubs and Larry added a sweet fiddle. The jams, the set list, the vibe...alll GREAT.. The best Furthur ever? NO that will be the NEXT show!
Love and Light!
Myles
Has anyone mentioned the Divided Sky tease at the 11:25 mark of Eyes?
really? Divided Sky? no shit...
Paco66, don't wanna seem like I'm being picky, but Keep your lamps trimmed & burning was a Blind Willie Johnson song written in the '40's & covered by various artists inc. the Rev. Gary Davis & of course Hot Tuna. BTW - couple of other notables that often don't get credited to this wonderful musician - In My Time of Dying, Nobody's Fault but Mine & a little ditty you may recognize called tear this old building down AKA Samson & Delilah. His songs have been covered by a who's who of music inc. Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Hot Tuna, David Bromberg, Bruce Springsteen & of course The Grateful Dead to name but a few. He died at the age of 47 in 1945, but obviously is still a VERY big influence on some of the best. If you like the songs you might be interested in picking up a greatest hits album I saw but can't remember the name of. If you like the old bluesmen, you'll love Blind Willie. Enjoy.
Ooops, that's Paco33. Guess I gave ya double credit.
Yes really, its there, plain as day, goes on for about 15-20 seconds
Gotta check out blind Willie! I thought Samson was penned by the Rev. Gary . I had the good fortune to be turned on to the blues back in 71 and caught a whole lot of the great bluesmen who were still rip pin it up in the clubs and collages. Those were some of the best shows I ever seen! They totally took me by surprise and blew me away by playin' "Keep your lamps " one of my all time fav. Tunes!! That tuna version with papa John would be a desert isl. Choice for me.
Whataya know. You are right. I hear the Divided Sky tease. Subtle, but I definitely hear it. It reminds me of the Maki Madni tease I heard during Here Comes Sunshine at the Tower on 3/23/2011. I heard that as clear as the nose on my face, but I didn't see anybody else make note of it. Same sort of thing. It was JK playing the medley. While everyone else does their own thing. Sounds intentional.
>Eddie's review totally nails last nights show
Indeed. Still thinking about this show.
Willie, i've been a blues fan for more years than I care to admit myself. still kickin myself in the ass for not going to see Willie Dixon when my friend had an extra ticket. this was around 87. He actually got to meet him & got this autograph that cracks me up because it's written so shakily. w/ regards to Furthur, I'm actually surprised by the lack of blues songs that used to be GD staples. Rooster, wang dang doodle just to name a couple. maybe I missed em in set lists not sure. I'd love to see Ain't it crazy (lightnin' Hopkins) or maybe Hoochie Coochie man. You can tell I'm a huge Willie Dixon fan. W/ this band though, ya never know what's gonna pop up when so I haven't given up hope! it's also why I love em so much. I like to think these are the types of sets we might have seen in later years had Jerry stayed healthy, but we'll never know, so we go Furthur.
Oh & about Hot Tuna, my best friend Pat (who sadly passed away last year) who was the one who wanted me to go see Willie Dixon with him, saw them @ the capitol theatre in Passaic somewhere in the late 70's or early 80's when Papa John was still in the band. Papa John hit a note so high that it actually broke a light bulb over Jorma's head. He said Jorma looked up startled & said "Is it live or is it Papa John?" Great stuff. We always manage to run into Jorma & Jack after Tuna shows & my buddy was always trying to get Jorma to remember things & he'd say things like "Sorry man, the memory ain't what it used to be", but that story he remembered & cracked up.
Great show, for sure. My highlight was Shakedown Street as the 2nd set opener. That song set of an explosion of energy that stayed in place for the remainder of the show. Amazing.
