I thought the set sounding great... A wailing Cassidy; a set of three songs sung by JK in a row; what is essentially a Furthur original...

Their schedule is pretty intense...

Syracuse, Fri>Atlantic City, Sat>Buffalo, Sun... complete opposite direction

Agree on the weird routing- who booked them in NJ between Syracuse and Buffalo during a 4-night run? That's an 8 hour drive for the crew tonight... was thinking Buf will be tired, but maybe tonight is the tired show, that's a hike from Syracuse to NJ too. Hire a new booking agent.

What a great show! My bro and I made the last minute trip from NYC. Tickets easy, dinner great, show hot, drive back to midtown-sucked. But I'm here now and ready to provide you with this overview of the shows highlights.

Set one: started at 7:12pm. RR blues is always great and rare. I was wanting "a little light". It had a wa wa sound to it nicely done! Col rain is a face and bucket ripped.

Set two: start of Viola was sooo loud! it was an explosion oF feedback with Phil pounding the initial base line. Bertha was standard. Caution totally hot- I like the way they have done this. The return of the viola stanzas was very well played and explosive. A slight pause and "hello; help>slip>franklins. Slipknot was like 1976 and john played great all night. It was 10pm when "franklins" ended so I knew more was coming . I was getting zonked and tired but jammed out anyway. "morning dew" was a poly glot pastish if you will of emotions and haunting Garcia sounds. The guitar play was stellar.

Great show, great band- heart of gold band.

Second set looks sick on paper! How'd y'all like the venue? Saw the Phish Halloween run there last year and loved the venue, hanging on the beach and boardwalk, etc. Kinda weird town but fun, unique place for sure. Live the help>slip>frank in the middle of the set....among other things!

IMHO that was the best second set put together with this band

It flowed, it ripped your face off, made you smile and made you cry

EPIC!

V1->Bertha->V2-> Caution-> V3 sandiwich, was just right on! WOW!!! I have to listen again but i would say i have to put it up against the PLQ Viola in Asbury park. Phil was just driving Caution into a fury! Viola Bombs away

Glad I made that show, almost didnt go.

First set at MSg and second set at the Boardwalk made for a wonderful week.

I needed that, thanks guys!

Overall the best I've seen live from this band, though I haven't seen them since the Tower in Philly. But been couch touring a bit lately.

First set started out so strong, then kinda settled out a bit.
Mason's>Cassidy transition was just killer, and I knew it was going to be a strong show at that point. Knew that second set would be great.

Second set was just way solid. We were about midway back on Phil's side, first row just off the floor. Sound was really good there. Though JK guitar could have been louder, it was nicely mixed from our spot with everyone clearly audible and a balanced mix, so I'm OK with that. Phil bombs, JK playing and singing great, without the feel of a cover band, just the music playing the band.

My wife, who's not one to rave about the shows really loved this one and agreed that the sound was great.

Ripple was just beautiful, outstanding version. Rich vocals from both the band and the audience

Great venue, great crowd, fresh Victory HopDevil and Headwaters IPA on tap through clean lines, and White House Sub Shop was as great as ever!

Easy drive back to Phllly burbs, home by 1215. My legs is done!

sorry to hear the comments about JK being too low in the mix

At the Portland show, sitting to the side of the stage, I remember thinking "finally, they have JK turned up loud enough" (in the second set, though - first set, I was still thinking he was too low - as he has been at most shows I've been to)

I don't need any more perspective, saw GD over 100 times in the 80's and early 90's. have seen tons of other bands and I know what sounds good, ok, and great. just throwing out some opinions while at show. didn't mean to bring negativity or piss anyone off. love this shit

I have been to 11 shows since 11/16/2010 (Reading, Pa) and this includes 2 Red Rocks show, and last night topped the list. EXCELLENT SHOW!!!! Here’s why: The musicians seemed rested, focused (didn’t see Bobby mess with his amp once, don’t think he changed guitars even once!), sound was great everywhere (was mostly dancing behind soundboard, but was in 100’s and 200’s to see friends), and the band just worked to knock each song out of the park. They weren’t frenzied, rather, they let the songs work for them, patiently working them (not too tightly) until the moment was ripe to push it hard. It was just a treat, every note. Tempos were more energetic than typical Furthur show of late, and JK’s volume was good. Also, the staff at the venue was great, lax, but still doing their job, could pretty much smoke when ya wanted, as long as you weren’t blatant, and best, could dance in most open spots. Back of the sound board was especially fun because they left it open without seats, so mostly only seated ticket holders, thus lots of space. The only hindrance was they kept a walking space all the way in the back, but not obnoxiously so. Here’s the play by play:
Set 1: Masons Children- good tempo, tight and loose, fun opener, got everybody moving immediately.
Cassidy- mellower tempo, but still good pace, good builds, executed well.
Just a Little Light- surprise for me, love a happy brent tune, really good sound.
Big Railroad Blues- RIPPIN”! JK went off the hinges and pushed it hard. Crowd got really loud when it ended, everyone so happy to get the effort from the band.
Cold Rain and Throwing Stones were good, nothing special.
Welcome to the Dance- very good, they really gave this time to develop, the sound and groove were great.
Hell in a Bucket- excellent, strong, played hard.
Set break was about an hour, total hassle to get into the smoking section, but saw so many phriends in the hallway, was fun and easy to get around.
St II: Viola v1-Bertha-Viola v2-Caution_Viola v3- Holy MFn Shit!!!! Played straight thru with one small rest. We all were sweaty stinkn hippies with huge grins after this. I thought they’d have to take some out on a stretcher. Dance dance dance baby, shake that shit, yeahhh. So excellent. Although the Viola jams were not as exciting as last Saturday in Wilkes Barre, this is completely understandable given the Dagwood sandwich they piled up here! Bertha was fast and good with a little vocal flub by John (don’t see that much) and Caution just kept building and building and goin and goin… man that floor was jumpin.
Help/Slip/Frank: Ok, I think I have seen this 4x in 11 shows (Tower, Mann, Wilkes Barre, AC, if memory is correct). The difference last night was PLACEMENT! The other three this came at the end of set II and by putting it here, earlier in the set, they had time to let it breathe. So the groove was just right for my ears. Help was superb, and then Slip was clean and sharp. As they came to the final part the sound was just incredible. I’m talkin Make Believe Ballroom 75 shit (released as One from the Vault, but hey, I had it as a tape for years). No kiddin, the sound was spot on that ’75 show where Billy Graham introduces the band. Franklins Tower was incredible, so danceable during the last 1/3 especially.
Born Cross Eyed- well, I was exhausted at this point, sounded great.
Mountain Song- I love this, needed the breather and water, so missed a little but when I got back it was in a tight pattern, excellent.
Dew- Must have been the highlight for many. JK nailed it, everyone in unison at end…”Guess it doesn’t matter anywaaayyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!”
Rider- really didn’t need another dance number, but off we were again to the races, just smoked it.
Doner Rap- Knew I heard Phil say, “We have some more for ya.” Not one more. Turned to my bud and called it, “We’re getting two” I said, still still catchin my breathe.
Encore_ OMSN, good.
Ripple- Sweet, emotional, but just a little too quiet. I was thinking Sunshine and Jeff should be aloud up to the front mic to take this one over, their back-ups were beautiful.
Leaving the place everyone was screaming YEEHHAA’s at the top of their lungs. Smiles everywhere. Great show, one of the best.
Pleasure meetin ya Jeremy, thanks for streaming!!! As always, thanks TaperRob, too. And especially…THANK YOU FURTHUR!!!!!!

This was an amazing show and a real great time had by all. It was loud with crowd applause which I think got the band all juiced up. sweet venue. Amhearst was up there but NJ might take the cake. Maybe some day we will here a wacky scarlet>cryptical>other one>cosmic>fire>stephen>uncle johns>good lovin'
with what they have been playin' int's realistic. Is there any truth to the rumor that tis is the "farewell tour" as Phil has taken Jerry's spot on stage? reliable sources speculate...lord knows its been a long ride.

Crazy Fingers...

I don't think so...

I don't think Phil and Bobby would do that without telling us...

In fact, I believe the switch was purely for communication reasons. In other words, the switch was initiated as to heighten the music potential! Not for any sentimental reasons.. I personally believe it had done wonders.

While there are many rumors circulating, Phil and Bobby have said countless times that this Furthur is where as they want to put all their energy... that they will play until they can't play anymore.

Maybe the heavy touring will stop soon, but I'm sure opportunities to see the band will not end anytime soon...

Great time at this one. Nice drive down from Delaware with my brother, great beach front room with a balcony right down the boardwalk from the hall, great dinner before the show, hooked up with some friends and headed in.

Nice old hall, couldn't help but think of all the Miss America pageants I watched from this place as a kid. Security was friendly and I didn't see anyone get hassled all night. 24th row seats right in front of Jeff, things were looking good.

Band came onstage and very little fiddling around, right into Mason's. Sound was very good immediately and they were obviously fired up. Nice opening jams and a fantastic transition in Cassidy which also featured a number of good exploratory jams. Just a Little Light was a nice surprise, one of Brent's better efforts IHO, and while it was well played I was hoping that they'd keep the jam vibe alive and go somewhere with the spacy bridge at the end. Alas, not to be, a pretty straightforward version but well done. BRR Blues SMOKED, Phil and John were digging in big time. I hadn't seen this since the '05 P&F's AC show so that was a nice piece of continuity. Cold Rain was well done and strong, kept up the pace very well. I wasn't thrilled to hear the opening notes of Throwing Stones, I was tired of this by '85, but it was a good if not exceptional version. I liked Welcome to the Dance better this time then other times I've heard it, nice little jam in there, but the crowd energy definitely came down a bit here and that wasn't helped by the incredibly slow tempo of Hell in a Bucket. This is another song I could never hear again but I thought it could fit in well as a tear-it-up set closer in this case but the slow beat held it back IMO. They made the slow tempo work, but I thought a little more energy could have been brought for this one.

All in all a very good set, especially the first half. I would have preferred a stronger ending but it was obvious that they were having a good time, the sound was great, and I was sure that we were going to get our face's melted in the second set.

And boy did they ever. The opening note of Viola was one of the loudest, most jarring things I've heard in almost 40 years on this scene. No piddling jam, just right into a slam that grabbed you and never let go for the rest of the set. Great jam into Bertha, a standard but incredibly high energy version, back into Viola, more fantastic jams into a Caution that just wouldn't let go. Phil was just ON FIRE. Back into Viola to wrap it up and the right into Help. As teacherman stated above, it was the placement that was key here. I'm so used to seeing this close out a set and you knew that wasn't happening tonight. Just an over to top version, a Slipknot! for the ages, and by the time they got to Franklin's the place was a madhouse. The sound was so good at this point it was like having headphones on, and the band was clicking on a level that would be hard to surpass. Just amazing. Born Cross Eyed kept up the completely psychedelic vibe which was mellowed as they went into Mountain Song. I'm not as big a fan of this as a lot of folks but the playing remained superb and it led into a Dew to die for, John just nailed every aspect of this version, fantastic dynamics. By this point I'm just holding my head in my hands because the execution is so good. Rider was a great high energy close out with a total sing along at the end. Great fucking set.

OMSN was expected and well done, but the Ripple took me by surprise and made a perfect ending to a great night.

These guys are playing at the top of their game right now, the execution all night was on an extremely high level. Even songs I don't want to hear or ones where the tempo is off "work". It was the best I have ever seen John play and as great as he was it was Phil for me that made this work; his playing was absolutely fantastic from start to finish, great tone, powerful when appropriate and subtle when needed. I can't remember how many times this night he would pull out one of his patented "pops" at just the perfect moment. the man is truly a genius on the bass.

I don't know how many of these I have left, I really don't like traveling for shows anymore and if the rumors of Phil not touring anymore are true this one could have been my last. We'll see. But if it is I can say with absolute certainty that I went out on a huge note. I might have chosen a few other songs to hear, but I can't imagine this band playing better then what I saw this night. Big time music played with a big heart.

Agreed - now phil can see jeff and john at the same time. He was truly leading the band in the second set. I think he just was on the other side out of habit.

All the speculation about Phil switching sides is a bit amusing at times. That being said, let me speculate for a moment. It seems to me that the switch was prompted to (a) afford Phil and Russo a better route for communication (when Phil was the other side, it appears that he could not often make eye contact with Russo because of Phil's stage speakers and Bob's rig); and (b) balance the sound of the band on stage, by having the melodic players (JK and JC) on one side and the rhythm players on the other side (which gives the band a more natural stereo effect). Remember, for the last 13 years of the GD, Jerry and the keyboardist (be it Brent, Vince and/or Bruce) were always on the same side. I always thought that was so in order to give the band a stereo from the stage and not just the PA. I could be wrong.

I wonder if anyone considers that they may be moving shows all over the place to avoid the utter fiasco that the Grateful Dead had with more people outside the show than inside? Ya gotta admit it would be as good a reason as any. At least they'll continue to be able to play in smaller places. For the love of god I'd hate to see this turn into a stadium band. Stop the trouble before it starts. All ready seeing the finger mob @ shows where tix are still on sale. "I need a miracle." no you need a job/life.

Well Chuck, I agree with ya on the stadium issue, although I had some super-fun stadium shows in my day. But a lot of these shows are return venues, and if ya consider Ratdog and P&F, well, they've been repeating places for some time now. As for the "finger mob," there are a lot of people in our family with alternative lifestyles, and that's a good thing! We are one of the most (and possibly largest!) artistcally inclined communities around, something to be very proud of. As long as a person respects the communities we go through on a given tour, they have evry right to hold a finger up. I'm not judging your comment, I am merely suggesting acceptance of others.

I heard they're jumping around cause they're trying to ditch the whistler.

communication might have prompted Phil to move tp the far right of the stage but why now after so long with this band and so many shows? It probably is a communicaiton thing, but seems he a great spot where he was before to interact with Russo and Jeff. I hope we get much more music for years to come, but I do not think it owuld be the Dead's nor Phil's style to announce a final tour. That's too much planning for these guys. I do think they are ready for Europe. How about 3 nights at the Rainbow Theater in London?

just b/c this thread is still going and b/c I have 20 minutes to be at work and I'm caught up I'll give my .02...

Good to very good show, not epic by any standards but a hell of a lot of fun...Came in little late (during Mason's) which sounded sick from the outside concourse. Saw Shmegg and co in the beer line and we all managed to end up haning in the same spot for the whole first set. First tier 5 rows up one section back on Jeff/JK's side. A money spot indeed for sites and sound. The sound was MUCH better than MSG for me but hey I was a hellava lot closer which usually makes it sound better...

Got in right at the tail and of Mason's and they launched into Cassidy. Pretty good version, you could tell they were still warming up but it was defnitely well played and had some good peaks.

Just a Little Light was a nice surprise and decently well played but did not touch the many sick versions that the Q laid down....

Big Railroad Blues...eaisly the highlight of the first set. The extended jam in the middle absolutely ripped and really got the place going. JK went apeshit and this totally raged...

Cold Rain & Snow...Was pumped to hear the opening notes but the jam in the middle was a little abridged and it overall the Cold rain left me a little, cold. Went through the motions but nothing special...

Throwing Stones...Slowed tempo but the jam in the end ripped pretty hard and happy to see in the first set rather than the second...

Welcome To The Dance...piss breakfor me (and evidently everyone else there cause the line were fucking horrendous...)

Hell In A Bucket...Decent way to close out the set and I think my first "live" bucket since 1995.

First set overall a solid B

2nd Set

Viola (verse 1 & 2)>Awesome Phil Bomb to open up raging all the way...>

Bertha>...was super pumped when they went into Bertha but was not FULLLY jammed out to potential JK and Jeff were doing a little "back and forth" jamming during the main jam, which was ok, but I wanted to hear JK grab this jam by the balls and blow the roof off the place (like he did in Big R x R). I would not say that he was "leashed" but the arrangement (him going back and for the with Jeff) did not exactly allow him to be unleashed.

Viola > More sickness, Phil nice and loud thumbing away like a mad man, whole band ripping...

Caution> More total frenetic sickness, crazy jammin and Bobby was pretty good on the vocal and didnt kill any buzzes...

Viola (verse 3)> More sickness, great closing verse. Lot of energy in the room now...

then they LAUNCHED right into

Help On The Way>Very well played...

Slipknot>Nice extended Jam, good peakage...

Franklin's Tower...Pretty rippin, the Listen to the Music Play verse > Jam was all and everything that it should be...Pretty solid H>S>F all around...

Born Cross-Eyed>...Sick

Mountain Song>...I really dig the Mountain song. My favorite new tune by Far...

Morning Dew>Very glad to catch it, and very well played....Excellent not rushed fully peaked out jam in the end, just the way it should be...

I Know You Rider>Nice Bonus, band was riding high and kept the energy going. I love the way the all sing the Headlight verse. Shows reverance and respect...

E: donor rap

1 Mo’ Sat. Night > Whateves...

Ripple > Nice way to Cap a solid fun show...

Went wandering off along the AC boardwalk (nice weather btw) ended up gambling at Ceasars for a few hours. My wife won 400 bucks! So I cant complain!

Great seeing the freaks I did, wish I could have seen more of ya both in AC and at MSG...

ONWARD...:-O

teacherman, I agree wholeheartedly about some incredible stadium shows (also a fan of the screens & visuals they provided) & understand what you mean w/ regards to the alternative lifestyle which of course I have no problem with. Live your life as you wish as long as no others are harmed. My only issue is this is what caused the MAJOR problems that the GD had in the later years & I would hate to see it happen to Furthur. Some great examples, I've never been to Red Rocks or the Greek to name 2, but know full well that overcrowding became the reason the Dead couldn't play there anymore. I don't think of myself as judgemental in anyway, but if your behavior is impacting the music negatively in any way, this affects more than just yourself. Yourself meaning anyone in general & not you. There were many towns (Hampton for example) where they were banned from playing for this reason & only this reason. I personally thought it was disrepectful when the band would plead "If you don't have a ticket please don't come to the show" and 10,000 additional people would be there. While we are a peaceful (for the most part) family, our size can be intimidating to small towns. NYC or PHILly don't think anything of it cause there's major $ being spent. Just sayin....
