Saw Jerry Garcia Band on my birthday (11-22-91) at the Rosemont Horizon. Like to hear a sweet JGB tribute tonight while sitting on the couch 20 years later. Columbus was a live treat for me on Wednesday. Let there be songs to fill the air!

dont forget John K is from or grew up here is the northern burbs of chicago he must have seen the Dead play at the Rosemont before. He went to Highschool in/at Palatine so these shows must just be extra special for John. Imagine you were watching these guys at this venue and now your playing on stage at that same venue. And, playing with some of those same musicians that you watched. Thats got to be way cool for John! I am the same age as John i saw some great bands GD or Non GD at the Rosemont. Rush played there all the time and he has made mention that he was a big Rush fan. How cool is that, well i hope we get a great night of music , i will be there!!

Well there was my second set --dark star...11 ... Mountains...st. Stephen etc. again just missed it by a night. That's ok because Columbus was top notch. If I were younger I would have hit a couple shows in a row and gotten it all. (I knew it was all probably coming in Chitown). This way it leaves me wanting more. So I'll be back...if they'll be back. Columbus reminded me that it's not always the song selection but how the whole show pans out. What I have always loved about the grateful dead music is how it speaks about life. The ups and downs. The disappointments and achievements. Grace and redemption. The Gospel. It's all good. It's a vehicle that can help us grow and learn and enjoy life as it is and how it can be.

Well, well, well...you can never tell.
Rosemont Review:
First off, great shakedown last night...I met up with old tour buddies and met new heads - good time.
Sugar Mag to open took me back to my first show in 1988. I was sitting 1st row with gdts tixs and it was amazing...this was the second time in my life I sat 1st row - the other was 1999 ABB at the beacon. The next tune was lame and then ratcheese song..wtf?? I could do without those tunes, next up Pride and Phil was playing great all night, changing tempo's and dropping bombs..good tune. Then, another tune I could have done without Peaceful Valley into a kind Deep Elm Blues - nice version into stagger lee - now the show was showing signs of life. Great Cassidy into motherfuckin' Sunshine Daydream!! Dude, 1988 Rosemont. Great version.
Set II
Playing in the Band - Hell yes, sweet jam and things are looking good into :-( Mr. Fantasy - why??? this was the only song in the second set I could have done without - heard the GD play it too many times sooo much better. Well, what came next was pure bliss. DARK STAR - the name says it all and this version was better than the UIC last year - kind. Into the Eleven - I want to point out that the transition between songs were real, real smooth and tight. Right into a KILLER version of Moutains of the Moon - WOW - great jamming and it was excellent. Wham, right into a great version of St.Stephen>Shakedown....Rosemont was Rockin hard now = powerful. Right into the best Wharf Rat this band has ever played - it was flawless and moving and impressive. Really, really good. Bamm, right back into a nice playin reprise - good music.
Encore = Liberty - WHY?? what a bunch of shit, really bad way to end a show. Come on guys.
Overall, I had a real good time. Second set was good and the vibe was right at Rosemont. I feel honored to see the greatest Bass player up close.Phil is playing his ass off and all the Furthur haters are suckers for not seeing him - I prefer this line-up over any friends any day - bring it boys, it just sounds right. I though Weir look as white as ghost and real skinny - I hope he's OK. He sang good, but looked like he had a blank stare in his eyes. I would have bought him a buritto after the show.
I like Furthur and will catch this wave while it's still here. Sunshine Daydream :-) peace

ha! just listened... amazing. Isn't the original lyric "doobie".

Anyway, I think Peaceful Valley is a really great song and a perfect example for one looking to hear JK's voice come into it's own.

I highly recommend the recording posted above...

This Mountains Of The Moon is amazing.

I am envious of this show in because of one aspect... JK singing Dr. Mr Fantasy usually signifies that there will be no ballad with John on lead vocals... such as the Syracuse show (which was great nonetheless)... however, the ballad spot was occupied by Sugaree.

I'm glad they let the Wharf Rat happen after the Mr. Fantasy... THAT is what brings the show to equilibrium... and lets this bird that is a Furthur Concert transcend!

I enjoyed the show. It was what you'd think from looking at the setlist, kind of a slow start but it came together as things went on. Sugar Mags opener was good fun and decently rocked out. Next few songs definitely didn't evoke a huge audience response, but they were well played and moved along efficiently. Ashes brought some jams, I was enjoying listening to Phil's take on this tune. Things picked up energy-wise from Pride onward. BW/JK traded verses on Deep Ellum, while JK sang Stagger Lee, I believe, by himself. Cassidy brought the best jamming of the set, and the transition into SSDD was smooth, foreshadowing the second set. Bob did a bit of his trademark hollering at the end, but kept it briefer than normal when it's the show closer. Interesting to hear this tune frame a first set.

Second set was pretty much exactly what we hoped for after a workmanlike but not mind-blowing first set. I agree with prior comments that Mr Fantasy was not the song I was hoping for out of Playin, but JK's setup riff to lead out of Playin' into Fantasy was kickass, and the tune was rocked quite nicely. I was surprised Jeff's organ wasn't featured more during the intro, but he definitely filled the mix by the end of the tune. As noted above, all the transitions were real good last night, very smooth in most instances with some solid group interplay throughout. Transition to Dark Star was authoritative and very welcome, leading into a super-fine long sequence through the Playin' reprise. I always forget what a titanic tune Mountains of the Moon has turned into, with extended jams between each of the verses. Phil sounded strong on vocals. St. Stephen was highly rocking and the backup vocalists really help increase the power on the verses. The biggest Phil bomb of the night kicked off Shakedown, which got the crowd very excited and made for a kickin' dance party. Wharf Rat was also very well received, played and sung with great intent, as seems to be the case every time I hear Furthur do this one. One of my favorite tunes ever. Then they jammed on Playin' for a good several mins before hitting the reprise, which I appreciated, at first fearing a quick reprise/out when Phil reintroduced the theme out of Wharf Rat. Thankfully that was just a queue and everybody freaked out loosely for a few mins before pounding out the reprise. I also agree Liberty wasn't my dream encore, but it was fine and had me vividly recalling my last Garcia-era Dead show, 5/29/95 at Portland Meadows, which ended with Liberty. Heading up to Madison now, looking forward to another show!

p.s. Bruce(Huerfanista) above called Liberty as the encore - how the hell'd you guess that one?! And yes, as someone else commented, there was a very Throwing Stones'y jam segment in Liberty, which made it a slightly more interesting show closer than it might have been.

Which also reminds me that Bob was dropping Greatest Story hits during the main jam in Sugar Magnolia.

Show started right around 7:40-45 against a 7:30 start time. Crowd was very loose, our 200 level center/rear section was probably half full, which made for lots of elbow room. Floor and 100 level were mostly full. Sound was good, sounded a tiny bit brash where we were, but everyone was audible.

I see a lot of prior show comments about getting JK turned up. While not ear splitting last night, he was certainly present throughout with some nice peaks (esp. St Stephen, which he ripped). Last night bolstered my sense that they deliberately keep JK a BIT under wraps in order to keep Weir's guitar big in the mix. Fan of Bob's guitar playing that I am, I have no complaint with that approach as long as JK cuts when he needs to, which was definitely the case last night.

A note on Ashes and Glass: This was the first time I've heard any Dead-related enterprise do the song without the rolling, rollicking instrumental bridge, and I was bummed. Anyone else?

just listened, you are correct it's a different arrangement. like the original and like this arrange as well, lots of room for John to stretch out at the end of the song. Which is a trademark of this 1st set, the songs are all clocking in at 7+ minutes, and all have some nice jams in them

A few thoughts about this show (okay, more than a few):

The first set was, as noted, a little slow getting started. Lots of songs unfamiliar to the audience at the beginning just didn’t get folks engaged. They jammed Ashes and Glass well though, and I kind of like the song, but it didn’t get people going much. Pride helped and was well played. But then Peaceful Valley…well, I really like the original, but Furthur’s version lacks all the delicacy that makes Ryan Adam’s recording so haunting. The jam out of it was very fine though, and it set up for a rollicking Deep Elem, which Joe just killed on the drums. Highlight of the set for me there. The Sunshine Daydream to close was also notable, with a long, rhythmic final note that sounded for a second like they might try to go into something else. Super fun.

But the second set, they came out on a mission that was palpable as soon as the jam out of Playin’ started. It was focused and intense and morphed brilliantly into Dear Mr. Fantasy. Sorry to hear the other reviewers didn’t care for it, but I thought they ripped this song, and the jam into it was just oustanding. Plus it really got the crowd with rocking solos from John in particular. Then Dark Star – wham! – here’s where things got serious. After the verse (they only sang the first one), Phil quickly pushed the band into a quicker tempo jam which then evolved beautifully and really started to approach the Zone. John even pulled out some Tiger roars when things were getting deep. But they flubbed a transition—couldn’t tell if they were going back into the Dark Star theme or into Eleven at this point—and had to regroup with a couple minutes of aimless space. It wasn’t a terrible train wreck, but it was the first indication that they were really playing on the edge the whole set, taking a lot of risks modulating theme and tempo, and not everything went perfectly. But it was sure adventurous and a very intense experience.

The spaceyness drifted to almost silence before Bobby built the Eleven up from nothing. Solid jam out of this that worked its way nicely into Mountains of the Moon. I love the way this tune has progressed, and this version was killer. Not as groovy as the excellent version from Raleigh this summer, but more out there, and with two extended jams, the second of which was so far out that I didn’t expect them to come back to the theme. But wow, amazing version, one of the highlights of the set. Intro to St. Stephen was perfectly timed and they slammed through it with authority. The jam before the final verse stretched pretty far from the theme, and they were all locked in close before the transition back into the “St Stephen will remain” verse. In the final lead up I thought they were going to lose it, but no, everyone hit the riff together and roared back into that last verse. Just peering over the edge, then getting pulled back. Exhilarating!

Shakedown was massive and featured some tasty extended soloing from Jeff. And listen to Phil play in completely different time in about the four measure prior to Jeff’s solo in the middle jam. He is an evil genius. The jam out of Shakedown started to come apart at the seams a bit and appeared to be heading for a stall at the end, but then something hilarious happened. Phil got a little frustrated, took his hands off his bass and was sort of covering his face like he couldn’t believe things had fallen apart. But maybe 4 seconds later John slid directly into the opening notes of Wharf Rat without missing a beat. Phil looked over at him surprised, started pumping his fist in support, and then started playing again. Once more looking into the abyss and getting caught in the nick of time. Wharf Rat was a monster, excellently played and sung. The jam out of it had a hard time finding the Playin’ theme, which Bobby eventually reintroduced from a near lull, and from that point they closed it out with authority.

Liberty is a fluff song of the first order and I was disappointed when they started it. Lots of folks bailed in the first few bars. But pleasantly surprised doesn’t even begin to describe how well they played it. Shocked more like. It got really stretched out and entered territory I thought was impossible for this throwaway tune. Seriously, go listen to it.

All in all, it for sure wasn’t the cleanest show they’ve played, but in the second set we were on a voyage with the band, and if it occasionally veered into chaos, it only made it all the more exciting. I’ll take a risky set like this any day over a perfectly played, more cautious set. I love that the band is trusting each other enough to do some serious delving.

Good review jamie - the Liberty was played well, but after that second set - man, I just wanted something heavy. I had a blast - come back soon Furthur.

I thought the Liberty was kind of heavy. During that middle jam it was like they just plugged back into the energy from the rest of the set.

that Liberty was a perfect fit if you were there in the past and could relate to why it was played.
JK stating lifting off again and Bobby had to kind of look at him and say hey.......we're landing now.

if you were there in the past <<<

I was at every Rosemont show since '88.
So, why was it played?
What did I miss?

I listened to it again - it is a good version with throwing stones riff, just not on my top 25 list.
