Could have been a better 1st set to open the East coast. Well last time I saw them in this building they opened the 2nd set with St. Stephen. Uh yeah that was in '77 man!! Hope for a better 2nd set for you guys!!
OMG I didn't even see the post and am not at the show and they did the cosmic effen thing and did the same opener for the 2nd set that they did in '77!! Can't believe it. Very very strange indeed!!!
Sorry it was the 2nd nite in '76. Opened the second set with St. Stephen then Dancin and Music. We'll see what they have in store.
I believe it is the last time that they played this venue. June '76. I was a college kid at the time and loved this show. One of three at the Music Hall after their layoff. Very Sweet.

yes I remember the two incidents. The second more vivid than the first. A very bad scene. In Pittsburgh if memory serves. Have to sign off now but I will make tomorrows show. Until then.

i'm here pam - thanks for the shout-out - my shitz apsos are fine n' dandy - lovely wife remains, lovely - nice to be back on the bus - kind of you to remember the dear departed - lookin' forward to our 3rd annual mann soiree and everyone's invited to pre-show @ my house!!
I had published this in the Pittsburgh thread, and am doing so again so that anyone wishing to reach out to these people can do so. I try to imagine what these parents are going through right now (and for the rest of their lives as well), but even then can't truely grasp at it.
Having recently lost my Mom, the sense of grief is tangible and yet so intangible. Cosmic confusion. Listen to the river sing sweet songs to rock my soul.
Any one wishing to send a letter of condolence to the family may contact them here; remember to be kind.

Everything was ridiculously tight - MUCH tighter than the Dead ever were. The transition from Wheel-->UJB was unbelievably precise.
First set highlights for me: Nice rocked out Playing to open - followed by Crazy Fingers just like the old days. I loved watching Jeff and John trading solos in Brown Eyed Women as Phil sang "and it looks like the old man's getting on." And Built to Last always brings a tear to my eye.
St. Stephen ripped. Cosmic Charlie sounded as good as ever. Mountain Song->Wheel->UJB - all played and sung well with lots of nice lyrical jamming. And the musicianship on King Solomon's Marbles was admirable. That song has a lot of moving parts and they didn't miss a beat. But a long Black Peter was a little much after folksy midset, though played well. Shakedown was tighter than ever, except that Bobby managed to get the most annoying sounds out of his guitar on that one.
This band has come a long way. It is scary how JK can turn the Jerry off and on at will. They have gotten much better at finding a balance between intensity and control and Phil remains a force of nature well into his 70s. We were up close on Phil's side, and my seat shook all night...
That looks killer folks, thanks for the setlists and reviews,Eddieboy!
>>>>Everything was ridiculously tight - MUCH tighter than the Dead ever were.
While this is likely true in contrast to the shows you experienced and it is true to the large part of the shows I experienced, give the Dead more credit than this. They wailed every tune they ever created. Beyond the wailingness level of Furthur. I like what Furthur is doing, don't get me wrong. Give tapes from '73 to '78 a listen. Try the second set of 8-1-73 for some ridiculous tightness.
The Dead certainly had their moments of tightness, and I agree that tightness was especially needed to bring off many of the more complex mid 70's "jazz" period songs like Slipknot, King Solomon's, etc. But they never had whole shows so choreographed from beginning to end like Furthur does. While the choreography makes for more consistency, the down side is the lack of spontaneity. No more watching Bobby play the first two bars to Around and Around, only to have the rest of the band launch into Sugar Mag like Binghamton 79. But I will check 8/1/73 when I get a chance. Thanks SailorSaint!
agree with all of the above. I think to get the most enjoyment out of Further, you shoul;dnt compare to the Dead. All I know is when I am listening to them, it makes things better and when i am watching them there "aint no place I'd rather be." last night I enjoyed second test alot. In the first set I'm not a big playin in the band fan, especially to start a set. BTW was a treat I don't seem to see alot and I really enjoyed they love each other, though i wish my girlfriend was there with me (she will be tonight!!). second set I especially enjoyed opener of St stephen and cosmic charlie. Though i have seen it regularly of late, KSM showed the talent and style of this band. I enjoyed closing of set with Shakedown and NFA. cant wait til tonight.
On a diffeent note is it just me getting old or is the nitrous scene out of hand? Is this really what we want to be associated with Further coming to town? If drugs are your thing cant we try something that is more private and not so public? Just my thoughts!
Found this on youtube... Tour Opener! Crowd sounds amped!!!

Yeah but if I wanted to hear tight back in the day I would listen to king crimson......I mean, isn't just about any band tighter than the dead? Futhur is great but comparisons to the GD are irrelevant. Looks like a good show tonight though.
I love my sprawling lurching any-note-at-any-time-is-possible 2 drummer GD. Long live the psychedelic slop!

I concur
One might argue that the St. Stephen last night wasn't all that far off from the court of the crimson king.

This show's highlights were the beginning of both sets.
Playing -> Crazy Fingers
and
St Stephen -> Cosmic Charlie
these were the highlights, lots of energy, lots of jam, and innovative
the rest of the show was really good, but it is the first 30 minutes of both sets that are the real jems at this one
Quick review. Agree with first 30 min., except the jam in King Solomons was also very fine. I do not think that set I was "B list" songs, thought it was a good set for a first night, to get the team going. And they did a great job. Some nice jams all night, Phil was great, especially the second set, dropping some nice bombs. It appears that they have worked on the "new songs" (Big Bad Blues,Mt. Song)as they explored a bit more and on Mt Song had some nice jams, especially moving into the song. Transitions were tight as well. As far as tghtness? Yes this band is tighter, they appear to get to the meat and potatoes of jams a bit quicker rather then some of the noodling (which I also enjoyed). Where it also shows is between songs and transitions. Some of you may remember way back in the 70's that the band would take sometimes 10 min or more to get their acts together between songs, tuning, scratching butts, whatever, THAT was anoying. I just feel that Furthur gets better each time out and that makes it fun. BTW I also heard Ruben and Cherise and thought they were going to do that only to hear Built to Last. Sound in the first set was not crisp but vastly improved second set. Great time, lots of smiles, good crowd. Lose the nitrous.
Watching you tube video of 2nd set through apple tv and I am loving it! Wheel > UJB > King Solomon's Marbles ...
Furthur is it for me (after 30 years of bus riding).
I like all the friends but this is what does it for me!
Can't wait for my trip to NC to see the band live again.
Until then I am grateful to sit in my favorite chair and watch on the big screen tv!
Well It's a start.everybodys sayin how tight they are ,I like loosey goosey, but I can dance to either Couch tour Until Summer the time is right for dancin in the streets..................Happy Easter Friends.
Sorry to be in the minority, but I was in the front row for the entire show (except the encore, which I walked out of), and except for Lesh being precisely where he needed to be, I thought this was a half-assed show that never really got off the ground. Weir was obviously having equipment issues the entire show, playing his little pantomime by the words and also forgetting a number of lyrics outright (an example was "You know you're the reincarnation..." during Hell in a Bucket). I thought Kadlecik's playing was naive and uninformed and the drummers and keywords were about average. Weir was by far the weak link in the chain and I thought he turned in an execrable performance. Show was a near dud except as I say again for Lesh who was outright superb. It is he who totally caries this band. Maybe it was an off-night for Weir but I was watching the interplay on stage while leaning on it, and it was obvious the band was in significant disarray.
I thought it was the worst post-Dead performance by any member(s) of the band I have ever witnessed. I have never walked out of an encore before but did so on this night. Big Bad Blues for example is a song that has to come out like a snake and eat you alive, and it positively lacked teeth that evening. It was white-bread and watered down, lacking any real grit, slinkiness or snaz (a really good version of The Same Thing would have a similar type of effect).
I don't mean to be a snothead or superior, but I thought the band kinda sucked. Having seen Lesh with Dylan Tour in 99, The Other Ones, many runs of PLF at the Orpheum, Beacon and Hammerstein, The Dead etc as well as the original band over 80 times, I thought they were very self-indulgent EXCEPT FOR LESH who I have great admiration for. Thing is, I think the band knew they sucked. Hopefully things will have/have improved for the rest of the tour and it was just opening night jitters, but the band kinda made a fool of themselves on stage in my opinion. I could go on about how the jams were kinda lacking sparkle etc but I think I've said enough.
P from Boston
ps Highlight of show by far, King Solomon's Marbles
was in the third row and I enjoyed it immensely. let's just say I disagree with Ecce. The shakedown was a monster. the entire band was tight, tight tight. St. Stephen was spot on. Entire second set was great fun and the brown eyed was a highlight of the first.
haven't been in the Music Hall to see the dead since November of 78. Great to return!
My GF and I were at the show and I totally agree with Ecce Homo. This was by far the worst Furthur show we've ever seen after having caught them on both coasts over the last 3 years. It was very disappointing. We were far away where the sound was sub-par and I couldn't see interaction so I don't want to comment too much about that, but the entire show fell apart in the second set (for me). That encore was horrific and they were off the stage 4 minutes before they had to be.
I hope it improved over the weekend.
It appears Ecce Homo is a Phil lover and Bobby basher. However everyone has their own opinion. The constant banter about forgot lyrics....I wish people would give it up. They have been dong that for 40 plus years, so nothing is new. I do agree that the sound was sub par for the first set (sitting in the balcony did not help)but improved greatly in the second set. Yep, I think everyone noticed that Weir and even Lesh were having some sound issues. However after listening to this while working out on headphones (ear buds) the keyboard/piano was very good, Weir was good, Lesh was great JK was equally as sound and had good interaction with JC. Was it the best Furthur ever, nope, but it was far from the worst. Having seen over 300 GD shows, this was way better than some of their shows of their last 5-10 years.
Finally listening to this show!! Wow! I remembered it being killer but this first set is better than I remembered!!! They boys came out swinging, ripping and jamming!! This first set is as SOLID as it gets!!!
