Calling the Cold Rain and Snow opener!
No matter what they are on Fire!
I will never forget my first Cold Rain at this venue 4.6.00!!! Also, that help>Slip>Franks to close out setII. wow! I talked to Barraco once and he remarked that that was the first one they did with Jimmy Herring....so cool.
Wish, wish, wish, I could be there tonight. My heart yearns for Phil's bass. Oh well, maybe Wanee... Big Peace All.
Slight Rant...meant in a positive loving way...What I liked about the Colo shows was the reinvention of the music. The changes were unpredictable and the shows each seamed genuinely unique reinvention of our old favorite songs.. And although that band has not had the chance to be repetitious, Further is very predictable ..not so much in set lists as such but more in song interpretation. Each song is played hard and tight and basically the same. Further to go further must now change it up and reinvent the reinvented. Hoping for a great tour and good a stream to give a honest listen.

Wow, I must be spoiled, the stream sounds awful. All I can hear is the crowd singing along and a bunch of people chatting loudly. You get what you pay for, it's free, I'd gladly pay to hear the show like the Allman Brothers did with Moogis.

I'm old school. The technology curve that allows us plebes to sit 'on the couch' (even though I am actually at the kitchen table) and listen to the show live with all the chatter through the tinny speaker on my laptop just blows my mind. It is simply amazing. Thanks streamers!!

Might be as well played as 2-13-70, but there's only so much you can squeeze out of a Bertha, Mama Tried, & much of this material.
love me a rockin bertha!
but there's only so much you can squeeze out of a Bertha, Mama Tried, & much of this material"
Have you heard a 71 Bertha? Or a 83 Bertha, they can squeeze tons out of this stuff, if they couldnt they would retire. That is one of the requirements I think, being able to squeeze new stuff out of old arrangements. Thats been there game for a long time now. I mean how many times do you think Phil and Bobby have done a Mama Tried or a Bertha and it sounds different every time.
I'm thinking that they'll do a really psychedelic second set because they haven't played anything off of Anthem of the Sun yet

Just back from the show, The sound system is awesome, you can't believe how good they sounded. They give us a stadium show in an small theater it was such a great feeling. There was no security in the balcony so the atmosphere was appropriate!

Tonight was not a setlist show.....it was about the performance of the songs. Everything was played to the max. No complaints here
Sound was excellent; Phil was pounding!
As I feared song selection in Boston came back to play a role in tonight's show. The show was good but far from great. Sound was only fair at the open but soon dialed in to near perfection. Having said that thought they needed a wee bit more volume. Love the theater. High lites for me were Bertha, Mississippi, Deal. Loved the Lost Sailor> Saint as I had not seen this in decades,(even though the jams were lacking)!!!! Also loved the China>Rider which was good but lacking in creativity and monster drive. Like I said good show but far from great. Hope they bring more enthusiasms to New York.
Bring on the Beacon!!!!!
A OMSN encore
Bobby just keeps getting more and more adventurous as the years roll on
I thought the show was good nothing to exotic but a lot of songs I wanted to see...I thought the sound was awful the whole show...Highlights 4 me were Bertha, The Deal, Althea, Sailor-Saint Terrapin..Wish JK sang all of Terrapin and SOTM should be sang by him as well. Good time was happy 4 my Dad who really wanted a Terrapin and got one looking forward to 4/9...Peace!!
Good Morning ya'll
This was a hard ticket to come by as many were looking, not sure if they released a couple hundred right before the show.It seemed most folks got in.
I scored one in orchestra that afternoon, so I was golden and grateful.
The band opened with a solid GSET all was well until John soloed. He seemed alittle off in his attack and never matched the rest of the band.
Bertha was a great choice, alittle reverse of something old. Again he was still not on his best footing and after his first short solo passed it off to Jeff who really laid it down and then tossed it back to John who seemed to be coming out of his slight fog.
They did this back and forth that was hot.
The ending was very good.
Althea was a perfect choice, two in a row for John? They really created a lofty airy groove and it was John's best performance so far. He was dialed in now. The sound at the board was good and volume was nice.
By this time it was painfully obivious that the live and let live vibe the Oakdale was to dancing, was not to be. The yellow shirts kept coming through the large open aisle around the sb every few minutes, they did not kick us out but just kept coming and going. So us dancers had to be more vagabound this night.
Then we got the old cowbow duo of Mama Tried> Big River which was really good. Mama Tried was played in the faster uptempo and Big River just scorched. The band raved it up big time at the end and Jeff was on fire.
Another great sing along 1/2 Step that was excellent and well received by the crowd and they jammed out of it and threw in a Dark Star tease on the way to a beautiful Birdsong.
The band being in total sync took us on a lovely ride. Phils vocals and the harmonies shined through.John played some great stuff here. They sang the last chorus and they continue to play and then Phil smiled at John and they dropped into Deal.
They raged on this one!!
Clearly the best one I have heard this band play.
This Jerry trifecta was a slam dunk!!
This might have been the best sequence of songs the entire night.
Break time.
I was down around 15th row with Sideshow Bob and Lyn, it was good to see them, and almost could have been a rail rider for this set with one of my twitter friends.
During the break Bob and I begun comparing notes on past shows and the last Amherst show came up. He hated the second set that night, I loved it.
He remarked Lost>Saint in the middle of the second set? That does not work for me at all LMAO. I am sure many of you here would agree.
Well when Bob started strumming those familar notes I turned and laughed and said maybe we should have not been talking about it?
They do like easing into the second set with this pair and on this night we would get another worthy reading. Bob was really in peak form and gave it his all.
Saint was intence and the bombs that Phil dropped justified a hige smile of acknowledgement from Sideshow. Bobby even gave us some good screams at the end.
Well done the band was dailed in.
It was alittle too conjested up front for me so I bid adeu and headed back to "open space."
The China Cat was perfect choice as these golden hits of JG continued on. I liked the traditional pairing and disagree that it did not go any where.
It was a classic ragin' steam locamotive version. The crowd was toatlly into it and the band soared and the vocals were sweet. John played some sweet loud solos and I thought he might do one one round at the end, he seemed ready, but who can complain?
The Terrapin was huge, full of conviction and the entire band soared. It had this assuring groove and Phil was just right there. Jay as always always laid down a great groove. Another highlight of the night.
Make that four so far.
They went right into SOTM and it was sweet, if a understated, version, some knucklehead laid a stinking fart right in the begining of it...OMG I am scared for life now.
Bob sang it softly almost at points to almost a whisper.
If you love the tune it was a nice reading, if not well you were bummmed LMAO.
They ended it on soft note and brought it to a complete stop.
I knew EXACTLY what was coming next and I start calling out Phil's name.
One minute later Phil and the band just sprang it on us right out of thin air....Eyes of the World.
There is something about this place and Eyes and this version just raged. The band gave it a full work out and it was a thing of beauty and boy did they jam it out.
My favorite song of the night.
Jeff took the forst solo and was just way into it as he was the entire second set. Phil's vocals were on top par and then John's first solo he just gave it all he had.
One happy camper right here it was just what I needed and maybe the highlight of the show.
The Jerry tribute continued to roll on.
I thought I heard a Wheel tease but Bob had to be Bobby and it was about 11:00pm so they dropped into a huge Sugar Magnolia. They did this same pairing to end the second set last year here and I like it alot.
John had that heavy wah wah on his guitar and it just brought the house down. Once again Bobby was in full command and delivered the goods big time.No big Phil bombs at the end but he was in the zone for sure.
A hot SSDD and we were done.Hello Bob ackowledged us freaks with a nod and a wave as he put down his guitar.
In continuing with the Jerry theme I thought Baby Blue might be the encore of choice tonight, they have only played it once, but we got a barn buring OMSN
Now onto the Beacon...anyone have some extras?
Happy trails ya'll
Man, after all these daze so many can look towards the crytical and leave out the total blessing we've been bestowed..... Most seemed to hear what I heard other than some lacking vocals... So here's my 2cents. Sound, Instrumentally was spot on: Vocals many times low in the mix no matter where I ventured; security was fairly lax so I ventured, ala 1983.. Bottom line, these guys bring IT, every show I see. The cowoy tunes as you all call them are classics, written by folks that mastered their craft, played and sung by to many to mention. For me to hear them done did my heart good. Believe me my heart needs some good doings. Many highlights, China Rider played together again was, excuse the 50 something phrase, was killer, Terrapin, killer. The dude that said they need to re-invent; ahhh... I disagree, it's been done and done and then done again. Predictable? Perhaps...but if you've seen over 300 shows or way more (way to many to count) ya get to knowin what to look for. I cunducted the whole second set, just by watching these players interact. It is subtle; but they continually interact. All in all a good solid show that will keep this old DH Biker coming back for more. BTW, did anyone listen to Phil's playing last night? Spectacular doesn't do it justice. The man plays that 6 string bass that leaves me without the proper words. He is IT! Period....
Oh, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the number of young ladies that either just walked up and hugged me; or after a brush while dancing near by stopped and gave me a very warm and comforting hug. This also did my heart good! My guess is at least a couple of these fine people never got to see Jerry play. From this kind of crowd interaction, I take away the FACT that IT is still alive and well. What a lucky guy I am to still get to experience all of this after all these many many years.
Peace
Hey Ted, I really enjoy your reviews; you really get IT. In this review you mention Amherst and Sailor/Saint - I believe out of that came a jaw dropping New Speedway that still sends shivers up my bones. What was so good for me is JK sang most all of it and he and I recalled every word Hunter wrote. Gotta love this band..... And having been around long enough to watch the evolution in process. What a lucky bunch.
Peace
Thanks Bob looking forward to the day I can meet you at a show lol. Maybe at te Beacon?
Bucky you are an idiot. Go home and stay home.
I'm also glad you missed the show. I'm tired of your negativity.
The show was great!!
Brendan, you and Bucky are both entitled to your opinions, neither of you are idiots. That is the beauty of all of this. All of us can contribute, good, bad, negative, positive.
A raging evening, Fitzman is right, this one was all about the performances and an unbelievable delivery. Bird Song was as out there as you can get, even the Sailor/St ripped. Great place,I'd go back anytime.
it was a good solid shoe

I agree(well...great)!!!
Hey Ted, I don't know if you were at Boston 2nd nite. If you were what did you think of that setlist, or anyone else for that matter. I thought it was the best I have ever seen. Hope you are enjoying the tour. I won't catch any more until Summer. Best wishes. RR
Bucky has been pissing some people off here since 1998 at least--- he is an important member of the community
Pinman, yes he has and yes he is. At times I have to agree with him as well. Look after seeing the GD 300 times and other configs 150 plus, you take on a different view. I know Bucky has been around for a long time. Again the beauty of this forum is everyone is allowed to express themselves and should be able to without being condemed.
>>you and Bucky are both entitled to your opinions, neither of you are idiots
Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion and I don't really care, but Bucky's home schooled negativism comes off as somebody who just wants to piss on peoples' picnic and it borders on the unfriendly and mean-spirited.
Having said that I enjoy Bucky's "reviews". They remind me to go out and live life for the moment and approach each situation with an open mind. Bucky's definitely not an idiot. He's probably one of the smartest and most Dead-knowledable people on the Zone.
But to me being intelligent, having other pursuits, or having been part of the Grateful Dead scene in its hey-day doesn't mean much when it comes to Furthur in 2012.
It's like complaining about the food prices at Terrapin Crossroads. It just is.
