that was a great Althea!
3 hot tunes though wish they d pick the beat up in prophet though
3rd Althea in just over a week - or is it weak? they still play their hearts out; that is except Thurdays 1st set. Bobby either checked in or perhaps, was dabbeling with Jerry's daze of old. Baby I hope he don't get burned. Some of know the danger involved. It's his life, he'll do with it what he will.
Estimated.... pretty perdictable. I hope I'm not getting soured on these guys. Ahhh, I'll always need my fix as well, who am I to say?
Bob are you a head or not. Sounds like u are to me. We all have to have a fix. No matter what
HOff.. if you had to play 10 (or 8) shows at the Beacon you might get a repeat..jeez people...that's the beauty of the GD and you know it...they can play the same song over and over and it's never the same, it's about the improvisation and MOMENT...predictable? Of yeah, predict what they will go into after this tasty estimated?
Gotta be makin a disc of this .To produce and release

what now??
Am I a head? I guess that's up to how you qualify it. Started in 77 then really got on the bus in 81. Been to, oh... perhaps 350 to 400 shows in all the various transformations including some many JGB shows on top of that. Not bragging, just letting ya all know who or is it what you're dealing with. I am what I am, I'm tired after 4 or shows in a row and am surprised to hear yet another Jack Straw and another Althea in such short order. Oh by the way, to all, Fridays show was up there with a few of the best shows I'VE EVER seen.
This show is strong as well. Just speakin my peace. Now enjoy The Saint and decide if you're a head. Seems like I've been here before.....
Art still alive and kickin.... lets talk tomorrow.
Peace
Not even close. Love this band

PHIL!
We had fun too Bobb at those shows Phil BomB Sure Did.
wow phil bomb build up from a week, that was one powerful Dew
Yea, me too Fitz; Love is the word. But it is ok to be critical here or there. Now the Dew. If you wern't there Friday please don't judge my feelings. A lot goes into it. It's more than the music dude. Many things need to fall into place. It may be hard to realise that from your easy chair. How old are you, maybe 35? It really doesn't matter... anyway.....
Peace my Brother, may we now stop this judgemental crap?
So what are we up for...a Samson encore?

In some ways you're right Art...it's just like proper English by putting a period at the end of a sentence....unless Jeff takes it to another level.
Thank you once again Taperrob!!!
the price is right!
Wow, what a pleasure. Thanks Taper Rob once again.

Streaming on iPhone... No commercials!?
Hi Andy if you rstill out there it's me dee
Nice second set despite the over played Althea.
I called that Johnny b encore!! The estimated was my highlight. Again a ticket from a kind soul for 60 bucks second night in a row.
The let it grow dew to close was everything you would expect
Can someone post the entire setlist. Thanks
Althea is never over played. Especially not with JK
Let Jon sing. Who wants to hear bobby sing lazy river road? P.s. terrapin all stars with stu Allen! Why the fuck not?
Couch tour and terrapin xroads! Life may be sweeter for this I don't know!
What's with the spring tour blanket not being spring tour specific?
Best coast t xroads for the win!
Bob H., I hear you and agree. Been to lots of shows like you and speak my piece. Some of these folks would get very frustrated at early years (Europe and before) when they did not have the song selection, or they took 10 min between songs, or they were an hour late, or everyone flubbed lyrics, or........I just love the music and take it for what it's worth, and right now this is better than the last few years of the GD by far. Keep those perspectives coming my friend.
And at 60 years old this is way fun.

Just trying to piece it together since no one posted a full summary- is this right? Looks like short sets but maybe long jams?
I myself would be happy with two eight-song sets and a double encore!
Thought the show was all around high quality despite the repeats from Thursday.
First set didn't really let up from the Stranger on. It was moving forward. Crazy Fingers was the centerpiece to a very strong first set.
Set II had repeats but they still sounded fresh. Coulda done with a Wharf Rat instead of Built To Last or Althea. They seemed to have it together for most of the show.
Setlist was:

Who cares about repeats? I must have seen Estimated/Eyes 30 times back in the day. As long as the playing is tight and energetic, which I thought it was last night, its all good.
Last night was, in my opinion, the best of the three shows I have seen at the Beacon. The crowd and the band had tons of energy.
To me, this was the closest Furthur has come to the Grateful Dead because John K. seemed to dominate at times, the way I remember Jerry doing. I know this is subjective, but I really enjoyed Bobby and Phil being in the background for long stretches. Of course, there is no one to compare with Mr. Lesh in my eyes.
One more to go, tuesday night.
Couldn't agree more about last night's show. By far the best of the run (didn't see Friday's show which also sounded great). And if they want to play Althea every night, that's their choice. I'm just glad they invite us to listen. I've been on the bus a long, long time, and (IMHO)last night's second set was the real deal.
...last night's second set was the real deal.
I am not looking to pick a fight here. But, for me, it can never be the real deal without Garcia. It can be great music, an amazing time, but it'll never be the real deal, even when it far surpasses the worst of the GD from the 1980s-90s, and heaven knows it was awful at times, especially when you hear the worst of it these days when every amazing show is available at the click of a mouse.
(I don't buy the notion that everything post-Pigpen can't be considered the real deal. As great as Pigpen was, and even accepting that he was with Garcia the center of it all in the early days, he was not the keystone the way Garcia was.)
I'm not knocking Furthur--hell, I enjoyed the heck out of myself last week. I take it for what it is and hope for the best.
Because when I start comparing or worrying whether this band is "legit," I find myself enjoying it less and less.
GD Channel played the Europe 72 Morning Dew (London, 5/26/72) as I crossed the GWBridge this morning during an annoying, sluggish trip. Let's just say that the insanely great version of that song elevated my mood and spirit. That's the real deal, with every member of the band (and the apparently dosed recording team) kicking serious ass. (For any Weir bashers out there, dig his work on that Morning Dew. Stellar and absolutely essential to the tune.)
I couldn't agree more. Everybody's right. JK should step up; he and Jeff C are beyond compare. Phil, he is beyond that. This is not the GD with Jerry and Brent and the rest. It is Furthur, and they rock the joint most every show. The jams differ greatly from GD to these guys. Futhur jams have to many elements to mention, from fusion to psychadillia.(sp) - I just hope they keep it together for years to come. I Love this band and the music as well. I'm glad a few of you understand where I'm coming from on the repeats. It's all good, and as I said, they all do and did play their hearts out. I can't see how the current band could get any better; but I said that last year; and yet they have, at least from my perspective. It is the real deal. They're a band beyond description.
Peace
I care about repeats cuz I've heard Althea 3 times in my 5 shows thus far. They could have played a duprees or Candyman or peggyo or sing me back home or even far from me . They have lots of tunes and covers to choose from- how bout a cream puff?
What a great day for a show at the Beacon! After spending a Sunday in spring strolling upper East and West Manhattan and ending in Central park boogying down to the dj sounds of the Central Park Roller skating Dancers, I headed to the show with a bounce in my step for sure.. I hadn’t been back to the Beacon since it was refurbished and hot damn, it is beautiful.
Overall Review: Strong show with a good tempo throughout. Only Estimated was a bit slow for my liking, and that only really in the first jam section. There were about 4 spots in the first set where they took off into “improv jams” and these were really tight, jazzy, sweet. In the second set the jams were mainly the segs between songs. Also, the songs came quickly. During the 1st set there was only one moment of break, the rest continuous music, and pretty much the same for the 2nd set. It was a JK night!
1st: Feel Like a Stranger- good, long jam in the beginning, kinda noodly, couldn’t tell if that was planned or because Bobby was pulling a classic Booby and was incessantly fiddling with his equipment for the entire song. End was real tight, lotsa drama.
Deal- excellent, they jammed the verse and stayed there for like 6-7 times, trading between keys and guitar, really fun!
Birdsong- Excellent harmony on the chorus, here was one of those sweet tight jazzy (and really fast!!) jams, keys were chasing guitar licks like crazy. I didn’t recognize it as birdsong, but my bud thought it was the jam with a faster tempo, revved up like 4x… dunno?
Just a Little Light- It was clear to me this is a JK pick, played very nicely, JK really pushing the builds…give me… give me… Just a little light!
Mobile, with the Memphis Blues Again- well played, small Bobby flub that I only mention because I am a dick, overall good groove
Built To Last- good, but my mind wandered during this one, reflecting on my NYC day.
Masons Children- Although I have seen better live, they absolutely shredded this. Great jams, good punches.
Set was 1:15, set break was 51 minutes
2nd- Jack Straw- excellent, really got the crowd right into it, Chimanti upped the anti, big smacks at the end with that pause with Bobby swirling his strum hand ala Pete Townsend
Althea- place was crowded so I didn’t get a chance to pee during break, snuck out quick and missed first 2 minutes, but loved what I heard when I got back. I know this has been heavy in rotation, but it’s damn good, and I only got one Beacon show, so really don’t care if they played it every fn night.
Estimated Prophet- This had the “weakest tempo” of the night for me. The G-C-F first jam seemed hallow because of that and really didn’t have much of a build, but I was surprised by the rest of the song, played well, started to get me in, then Bobby went for it, “Hiya, Nena!” Gave it his hardest 4x and the crowd appreciated it for the most part, some people harmlessly mocking it a bit, but not mean spirited. He used to really get us with that back in the 80’s! Song went into a jam at the end, then a sweet jam transition into…
Mountain Song- loved it! Big Phil Bombs! They do this soooo well, love it, love it, love it! Well executed, tight jams throughout at each critical juncture. Super jammy at the end, as to be expected, then bam!
St Steven!- Super strong, tight jams, spot on/ in synch haults and whatnot, and took off at the end into a great jam.
Born Cross Eyed - same as St Steven… tight tight tight in synch shit, really good.
Let It Grow- really good, danced the most during this, long extended jams, the slow transtitions/wrap up were a little weak, but not bad
Morning Dew- what can I say? JK nails this every time, it was sublime.
I split before Johnny B Goode at 11:21, got to NYC at 8:30 am and needed to get cruising down the turnpike.
I give it an 9 overall, not much outer-body stuff, but a great, tight, upbeat, well executed show.
If this aint the real thing, it's close enough to pretend.
That's my point. I don't want to pretend or need to pretend. I try to dig this for what it is, which is a band that does a good and sometimes better than that (and sometimes worse than that) job at the music that so many of us love.
And what that says to me beyond what the band plays and sings is that the songs and the lyrics--especially the best of the Hunter songbook as well as many of the others, including the covers this band does--continue to resonate with us.
Hunter has earned his props among the Dead crowd, as have Barlow and Weir and Lesh, but he deserves far more recognition from the world at large.
He's surely in my pantheon of great songwriters, which on the rock/pop front includes Dylan, Lennon/McCartney, Jagger/Richards, Joni Mitchell, among others.
Oh yea Fred, real close, or like I've said very real; plus I like to pretend. And R Butze, thank you for your acknowledgement. It is appreciated. It's likely I've seen you out there. You're speaking my language. I'm 7 or 8 years behind you, yet I fully understand. It's too bad some of the youngins don't get IT. I'm glad I do. I'll be back to the end, and hope it never comes.
I turn and walk away; then I come around again. It looks as though tomorrow I'll do pretty much the same........
Peace to all; no matter what your view.
Nice review teacherman! Your oppinions are pretty spot on to me.
Jk and JC rocked it last night, not that everyone else didn't. It was nice to hear JK well.
Among others, my highlight was Mountain Song.
Even though there were repeats, I'll lovingly take them! I feel like this band does keep getting better. It will be fun to see what Furthur will break out down the road.
SHS, regarding, Hunter, please, he is beyond most you've mentioned. Perhaps Dylan surpasses. But as far as real poet, lyricits are concerned Hunter is unreal, maybe we can put him in the same plane as Morrison, McCartney and Dylan."Ain't it just like the night to play tricks when you're tryin to be so quiet. We sit here stranded yet we're all doin our best to deny it"..... shall I continue. I agree Hunter is towards the top of the heap. Heap, not a great word; but I must say I agree whole heartidly with your post.
Peace; I must sleep as work beckons in the morning. Again, Peace to all my associates. Mark, Kathy, Howie, Chris, and Spike. Thank You, too much fun; and hey, I'm still sucking air. Unreal if you ask me...
Peace!
did anyone else notice Kimock 3 more days on the PA after the Sunday Beacon show? So f'ing cool...
I love Furthur...but i get to see the Q in less than 2 weeks..WOHOOOOO
bob h...sure we hav crossed paths. Hunter is unreal, a true balad master. I love reading his lyrics. Funny the only reason more don't know about him is he is with the GD and beyond.
I'm sure they did those two songs again because of the way Bobby was playin' the first time around. I'm sure it was absolutely no fun the other night for the other band members with Bobby playing so erratic. They smoked both tunes second time round!
