The Q brought the goods...full on powerhouse mode, like they picked up where they left off in 2001. From the Shakedown opener it was on...LEvon>Rider was a HUGE highlight as was the incredible 2nd set Viola Lee Sandwich with She Said and King solomon's Marbles mixed. Into the Mystic was pure beauty and bliss from Warren, Arcadian Driftwood was really nice vocally. Have to say I love Rob on keys, he is very tasteful and i love his voice. He sang H>S>F and also HCS and maybe a few others, lots in 1st set, i know it was his bday though no celebration..sometimes Chimenti squeezes in 2 many keys, Rob has real nice chops. Jimmy was a little reserved but let it fly a couple times, especially in King Solomons marbles wow he shredded that and Warren listening really nicely to Rob and Jimmy and just doing his thang, tons of Beatles teases and Elanor Rigby riffs, his Midnight hour was rockin, as was his Golden Road which he did some cool lyric rap in. Molo is just an animal, jumping up and down and talkin to Warren all night, he loves his part in S of H>S>F, it's just monsterous and Phil was usual beaming self, smiles all night. Said at donor rap that "this was the best set of music he thinks he's played in a long time", ha, welcome back Q. The Q is a powerhouse, they will only get tighter and tastier.. a little rough on the transitions and alot of noodling but only to slam it back in when they hit those songs, and chorus parts. They really know what they are doing...I liken it to taking the ferrari out on the track, a couple test runs and it's going to be like back to the future..seize ya tomorrow.

That's what I was thinking all night. Well, I thought it might have been an old American muscle car - especially when they hit full throttle on Cumberlands Blues - you could see and feel the giddiness of the five drivers as they hit the straightaway.
second set was *amazing*...
yar mateys, north of my golden city, up over the stunning golden gate bridge, up over the marin headlands, after the 101 goes all the way up into the clouds and drops back down again to sea level, there is a little fish shack with the unlikely name of terrapin crossing. it was here at ye olde shanty that a very capable, very open, and very talented band known simple as “the Q” took the stage last night and decided to “push the envelope”. ha, you wizened old cats of yester-tour are saying, that envelope has already been pushed, and pulled, and pushed AGAIN so often that is now just a torn wreck of parchment… not so my friends. after a solid and even, ahem, respectable first set, this group of five players could have easily nailed shut the night with a solid, respectable second set, and gone to work on the shrimp scampi. not these dudes. not on their watch. no. instead, these five cats took their set-break, had just a little scampi, got on the same page as the rest of us ship-o-fools, and delivered a second set that took the afore mentioned envelopment and fucking ripped it to shreds. ye old envelope became a tap from which all the energy of the world flows, a tap that can go drip drip drip or flow like a waterfall, wave after wave after wave. Q owned this tap last night… and more, Q owned the fountainhead itself, if only for a few sweet moments. ‘setlist’ is a frail attempt at putting structure and form to a musical masterpiece where the greatest strokes were the spaces in between, that song called jam, that musical place that phil owns with his friends. good job Q and thanks for the love phil. see ya tonight!
Nice Job Steigs
Brian, Steigs - Thank You. So glad to hear that it was one of 'those' nights. Thanks for sharing!

From Other Stuff thread:
Okay, not a review, but some notes after looking at the setlist and remembering my experience. Shakedown, no surprise there! No shake it down down Bobby, neither... lots of poking around... smooth as silk they jammed into Pride of Cuc, a great version that left me grinning and saying (sorry) "Can your Furthur do THAT?". Doin That Rag, perfect to welcome Rob back to the band and stage, his voice meshes with Phil's better than any other high harmonies he's had... Acadian Driftwood, careful more than enthusiastic, shared vox between Rob and Warren. Dire Wolf, an actual bathroom break song yay! Amazing HCS, the grins going back and forth between the guitarists... Into the Mystic, the real gem of the first set, with tempos changing and jams visiting places I'd never been before, quite different to all the other lovely Warren versions of this song. Cumberland was predictably explosive, Rob all over every note, Phil looking SO emotional and involved. Great first set!
Golden Rd > Viola 1 > Bertha > Viola 2 > She Said > Viola 3: nearly fiftyfive minutes of non-stop cooking. When they finally finished, we all realized that they hadn't stopped for a LONG time. I think it was the second verse of Viola took on some real strange twists, sort of a reggae-remix kind of arrangement...
I'm leaving the adjectives out, y'all know it was mindboggling in every instant, right? I LOVED Phil's face as the band eased into She Said, after a very delicate transition. That's why I said earlier that this was very much a tune-up nite, searching for the Group Mind which will serve them (and US!) so well for the next three nights...
Levon was rollicking and bouncy, more lively than I remember the version he did with The Dead in 2004. (Speaking of which, bring back Over The Hills And Far Away!). Levon segued brilliantly (of course) into IKYR, and I thought were going to have a shortish second set... ha ha! Help > Slip > KSM > Slip > Franklin's!!! That was 35 minutes more! As I mentioned above, there seemed some considerable musical tension from the end of KSM back into Slip > Frank, and someone else mentioned Phil started Franklin's with the wrong verse... but the playing was dynamic, awesome, one of those moments when you just had to stand there transfixed trying to absorb all the notes and emotions of the moment...
"That was the most exciting set of music I've played in a quite a while!" Yessir, my Captain, that was amazing. Killer Midnight Hour to follow, smiles and redemption and more killer solos from all concerned... two hour fifteen minute second set, keep your strength up folks! The famous Grilled Cheese fingers came through during Franklin's, most welcome indeed, made my night much better!
More notes... Welcome back John Molo! Um, I've been fascinated by the new rhythms that Russo suggests to Phil, and was quite interested in Jaz Sawywer's gig a few weeks ago... but NO-ONE Plays The Band like Molo... listening to Phil, communicating to the rest of the band, herding the cats back from the shred, holding it all together so our minds call all be blown at once. Man, I remember that guy... I used to think that no-one combined individual and ensemble drumming with the panache of Mt St Molo. I've loved his drumming at a close distance with DNB for years now, but in truth, Phil really brings out another level of performance from the guy...
The room was good. Looked and sounded grate pretty much everywhere. Got my water bottles quickly. Only one bathroom for each gender in the main room, very inefficient, but friendly staff help you stay in line while you dance and wait your turn. I mentioned fantastic sound throughout, full and detailed, so you could actuallky hear and distinguish each bass note clearly... such a rare treat. It was incredibly full and clean and not even close to really LOUD. Perfect for these ears... they have two separate entrances / exits now, I liked that...
Interesting side-note to the valet parking sitch: a couple of San Rafael Police Officers stood a few feet away from the line of people waiting for their cars to be delivered. I felt well checked-out. I suspect they're there so they can get a GOOD look at each person's behavior as they get in their cars and drive away. Prepare to look normal and competent, folks, just in case... Hmmmnnn.... I wonder if that's partially why the whole valet scene developed, it's not really necessary otherwise.
Real, paid, non-miracle tix tonight! Lucky me! Perhaps another non-review tomorrow...

She Said
Nice review but i must add one thing. I have the 2004 tour and The Dead never did Levon ( nor has Phil or any formation of members of the Dead before last night). They did do Madman Across the Water.....
wow man, whats with the bobby bash? i personally like when they shake it down, down!! plus, bobby is a founding member! no bobby=no shaking goin' on!!
That is so far from the truth it is staggering.
Thank you BBeard...
Bobbys shake it down shit ruins the song for me .I'll be groovin and not remembering that ending then WHAM! It really sucks
any word on purchase Q shows via download?
if you don't like bobby how can you like the music at all? it takes the work of all the boys to bring that sweet hippie funk into the realm of what is. i'm just saying if you dont like the end of the song banter then you must not have liked ron, he started all that. just don't bash, say you don't like it and move on, the dead are about that right?

(((LEVON)))
Thanks for the correction re Levon vs Madman Across the Water! I'm actually as much an Elton John fan as The Band, and I was so excited to hear the song I never thought about Levon Helm till writing this review the next day! Ha ha... Re Bobby bashing - I was saying it lightly - if I told about ALL that went down with Bobby it would burn off both of your balls too! Suffice it to say tastes, like mileage, tend to vary...
