Here it is girls and boys - the proverbial "home game", in which I get to play host to a cast of thousands (OK, dozens) at my 3rd annual Furthur BBQ pre-show. You are all invited to stop by for ribs, taters, spagarus and cold brezewskis. For me, it's BBQ then pit. I'll be the one in the dashiki. Mountains Of The Moon.

This was a nightmare show for me last year, even though it's about as close as they get to my digs in Newark, DE. The venue isn't bad, but parking and entering were horrible last year. Hope to get in earlier and with less hassle this year. Got my sites on Merriweather tomorrow night for the big fun as it's my son's 24th and we're in 11th row center. Should be cooler too. The boys always seem to gel well around 3rd/4th show of the tour ;). I do have one extra tonight if anybody is in dire straights. Cost is very negotiable.

They need to come back to Newark! Took my mom to that one. Took my son to Merriweather Post for his 18th birthday in 2003. Have a great time.

Killer heat last year, just like tonight.

Getting in was a real bear, which surprised me because it had been much easier in the past.

Hey everyone, just heard that the Mann is allowing people to bring in two unopened water bottles for tonight's show. Also, don't forget there are two entrances - usually the one at the top of the lawn is less crowded. Have a great show and stay hydrated!

John was playing a gold custom prs that was plugged into a mini computer sound system, it had a real nice sound to it but he has been switching guitars every night this tour. I think that they should just give him all of jerrys old guitars

I'll start with climate: It was steamy until about 5:30 when it got overcast and the breeze picked up. Show started at 7:30 and at about 7 dark clouds started rolling in and there was wild lightening (I'm thinking if they don't play Lazy Lightening today we'll never get it. But they did get a lightening song in there at the end) and wind for about 15/20 minutes. Which cooled things down a bit, but no rain. The Mann was prepared this time. No problems getting in at all. Although we were among the first rush.

First set just blistered. Trucking opener, what can you say. I heard Cold Rain teases, so when it rolled out it was fun to be surprised (although CRS would have been just fine too). Nobody's Fault was a good follow because it has that Smokestack feel to it. Then the FIRE ... which I was hoping for because it didn't follow Scarlet on Friday. It was just what you want, thick and chunky but creamy too. A nice Cassady, Weir just doesn't disappoint me with this song. On Temp and in tune and into Peggy-Ohhhhhh. Although it was not immediately recognizable to me.

Then the Jed, which honestly was one of many highlights, which you don't really expect with a Jed, but the crowd loved it and gave the band an ovation, which gave them a pause before launching into Esau. I loved it and so did lots of others. Then the Deal, which is always a money in the bank closer.

Of course me and Homey J (my wife)were drenched after the first set and the second set didn't let up with a scorching China>Rider to open. Reminiscent in its energy to 2010 Mann. Props to Jeff P. for strong lead in the harmonies leading an 8,000 folk sing-a-long.

The spacey jazz jam was a surprise after that jumping start, but honestly I don't think any of us could have kept up the pace with the heat. Joe Russo was a monster in the space and Caution Jam between Dark Star. His trio chops coming out with strong support from Jeff C. Gypsy woman was another highlight with JK and Bobby playing so hard and tight together into the St. Stephen which I thought was heavily teased in the spaceyjazzjam.

Then Unbroken Chain...missed the breakout by a day in Philly in 1995 so they owed that one to me for a long time. I loved it, but was struck by the dissonance of Chementi.Purely intentional and it worked as everything reassembled and fell into Prudence. Which if there was a clunker for me this was it. Just because Weir insists on singing and playing at a slow tempo (don't mess with the classics dude!) once it got to the JK/JC part everything good and Jeff and Sunshine save the vocals. All was well when a sweet Wheel (there's the lightening) followed which I had also heard teases of in the spacejam.

Homey J was hearing GDTRFB all night and yep there it was. Boy did she boogie during that. It was fun to watch her blissed out like the girl I fell in love with 25 years ago. Couldn't have ended any better with WBYGN great version JKs lyrics a bit garbled but the emotion in the voice was unmistakeable. That was church bitches.

OMSN. somebody got it right when they wrote about the tie-dye shirt and cargo pants wearing folks heading to the gates while the kids (an old folks) in the hall shake their bones ... it was fun fun fun especially with the Bobby scream.....Those bones are achy today and my face hurts from grinning.

Great show.... WBYGN was beautiful, the guy next coined it when he said watch them ruin it by playing one more Sat night....not complaining but I think they should give that tune a rest...at least a break from playing it as an encore on Sat night.

Furthur Review 7-7-2012 Mann Music Center, Philadelphia Pa

In short this was a smokin show, great execution, inspirational jams, fun set list. Note: Phil’s bass was turned up, could feel him in your chest often.
Set I (7:42-8:53)
Although a basic first set in performance and energy, the highlights merit the gold standard

Jam>Truckin: Fun, basic E jam, thought we were getting Truckin, heard it in there. The Truckin was okay until after the crescendo, then JK smoked it!

Nobodies Fault But Mine: Whatever, they can take this out of rotation IMHO

Fire On the Mountain: Killer! JK slayed it.

Cassidy: very Good

Peggy-O: Although they do a nice job with their new arrangement, my ears want to hear a classic 80’s rendition, so it’s not fair for me to comment

Tennessee Jed: Big fun singalong, very good build to the climax ending

Deal: I love how JK and JC trade leads back and forth in the main verse. This emphasis on the first half of the song is fantastic. Although it does mean we don’t get the big Don’t ya let that deal go down jam at the end, it’s a worthy trade off.

Set II (9:43-11:30)

11 out of 10! Excellent by any standard. This was by far a dancing set, both tight and loose, giving you centered focus, then opening up for flailing of arms and legs!!!

China>Rider: Although a slow start and for the first few minutes, before we knew it Jk was shredding his China licks, the whole place was bouncing. Then Rider went down like the boys were trying to prove something. I mean, shit, they hammered this out, superhuman force.

Space>Dark Star V1>loose to fast tight jam> V2> Caution: Holy Shit! In the first minute of the space I thought they were bringing out something from Blues for Allah, it just had that dark sound, then I could hear Phil following a Dark Star bass line in there and I was pretty sure it was coming, which it did about 2-3 minutes later. It was a good version, JK, BW, PL each singing a line, then all singers…Shall we go?... together, really nice. I loved the jam as it sped up. Caution was great as always. I LOVE this song live, and although it wasn’t a hyper-energetic version, the power was there and I danced my ass off to it.

St. Steven: Sorry, was really exhausted and needed water, so I wandered a bit to get air and whatnot.

Unbroken Chain: I have seen this live 15-20 times post-Jerry, and what I heard last night was exactly what I have come to expect… superior, tight jam, melodic sound, emotional jam ending…fantastic.

Dear Prudence: Beautiful sound, this best describes the Furthur version. They emphasize the beauty of the song, both lyrically and rhythmically, rather than the huge Jerry-esque jambuild version. Love Furthur’s as a different thing altogether.

The Wheel: Nothoing really to report, good, that’s all

GDTRFB: Everybody dancing! BIG fun.

And We Bid You Good Night: Soooooo beautiful. Superb harmonies, enthusiastic in synch audience double clap response, band and audience in each others’ embrace… love.

At the end of the donor rap Phil said, “And now you guessed it, we have ‘one more’ to play. And of course, that’s just what they did, OMSN.

The second set was so good, can’t claim anything to be a particular highlight… amazing.

Always a fun day at the Mann. Although the sound of nitrous tanks got a little much, a beautiful family vibe filled the park. Everyone kept chill under big shade trees, and for me the highlight was that my band Self Indulgence played two half hour sets and everyone seemed to appreciate our efforts.

That’s all, off to Merriweather!

I was at the Mann last night.
I feel so satisfied and fortunate, that I believe I can let MCU Park be. I think I would only be setting myself up for a lessened experience.
Check out the setlist, cause using words is like "dancing to architecture".

Stellar and Epic come to mind. Peace and enjoy.
Stu

Amazing overall show, loved the energy and tempo, we has seats in the balcony ( HOT!) but we we're dead center and it was LOUD, which was a first for me at a Furthur show. IMHO at least for me it the best Furthur show I've seen.

It's been a few days since the show and I wanted to add my 2 cents worth here. It took me those few days to realize that we witnessed a 'throwback' show from maybe the early 1970's Grateful Dead era. The first set was for dancing and twirling; the second set was a definite psychadelic space jam and perfect on a hot night! The band wanted to make a statement that they could still bring on the jam and they sure as hell did just that. We knew we were in for a ride when JK started noodling after China>Rider and they just kept on going - I called the Dark Star early on from Phil's bass cues to the band. The Caution was MONSTER and really blew the roof off the place - and then the familiar notes to open Saint Stephen brought the twirlers back into the front of the stage. An absolutely lilting and lovely Unbroken Chain took off again into space which was balanced by a nice version of Dear Prudence which transitioned into The Wheel turning and turning. The band worked out through GDTRFB and brought the set to a lovely conclusuion with We Bid You Good Night. The encore was a foregone conclusion for which we were already hoofin' it into the heat of the evening and down the road we went....

Thanks you friends for being so groovy and kudos to the band for providing a nice excuse for the 3rd Annual FURTHUR BBQ. God willing there will be another chance next summer! Safe travels on the road to the rest of the summer shows! You have a phriend in Pennsylvania.
