Both the Cumberland and the LL Rain were very well done. I haven't heard Bobby get into it like he just did for LL Rain in a long time. That's a good sign.

Have not been there since 85!
Great memories of 84/85
My brother is there right now.
Just got in from taking a ride to Cary to scope out the Koka Booth Amphitheatre. Looks like it'll be a very intimate setting. Listening to last night's show on the archive during this break. (Oh yeah, and finishing up my first eight page school paper due tomorrow morning at Duke Div.- 48 years old and still doing schoolwork...yikes!)
We need streamers for the next 2 shows.if you have a smartphone it is easy to do.Just install the ustream app and go live!!

Can't wait for the day we talk about the old times where couch tour didn't have live holograms and was only audio streaming.

love it kykind!
Thanks Kevin for the stream tonite!
Very well played. Random thoughts-First set Jerry songs a bit slow but Bob and Russo were really on their game tonight. Tons of extended intense jams Jes gone was extra special and did I say Bob didn't mis a beat with some great playing. John and the gang did Jerrry right on So Many Roads. No complaints here and I tend to be somewhat critical. Oh and there was a girl they were doing cpr and mouth to mouth up near the side of the stage who apparently came to before they hauled her out. Wouldn't be complete without some drama. Last thought No Dylan songs in the mix. Peace

Looks like a yawn fest.
I guess I lost 4 lbs from yawning rather than sweaty dancing? This show smoked!!!
Cumberland Blues is never a yawn fest!
Thought they had it cued up in Philly, but turned out to be the revamped (imo?) jam-intro for Caution.
Liked the Caution a lot better than usual, especially as the Feedback was not present.
"Looks like a yawn fest."
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Clueless.
What I wouldn't do to turn back the clock to June 30 and July 1, 1985. Now THOSE were some good shows at MPP.

I'd also like to turn the clock back even more and hit these June 30 and July 1 shows:

yawn fest...clueless, awesum show!!!....goin to Bethel....hopin for a Bertha
Another great time at a great venue. The drive down from Delaware was a lot busier than we expected, we hadn’t counted on running into Sunday vacation traffic returning from the July 4th week so we had a few anxious moments worrying about getting there on time. But the traffic cleared up half way to Baltimore and we arrived with enough time to grab a bite to eat and have a drink. They parked us in one of the back lots on the west side of the venue which turned out to be a lot nicer then the large main lot and made getting into the venue via the back entrance a breeze. We got in about 30 minutes before they hit the stage which gave us just enough time to grab a beer, run into a few old friends, and meet our seat neighbors. We were in row M of the center section, 5 rows up from the railing above the pit and right in front of Phil. Perfect. The weather for me was a non factor.
Bucket was pretty standard and they had to get the sound tuned in but it was a good strong start and the view from our seats was amazing. Candyman is one of those songs that I got tired of hearing 30 years ago but this was a note perfect rendition, the sound got dialed in quickly and from here on in it was never a problem. I took it as a very good sign that a song I didn’t want to hear was done so well. Althea was another one that I could have done without, it’s been turning up at shows I’m at a lot, but once again they just nailed it, Jeff and John both doing a great job. Cumberland Blues is always great and this one did not disappoint; nice jams and a tight flow, very tied into the music by this point. The first few notes of Looks Like Rain had me laughing, another one that I would have never put on a “what I want to hear” list but Bobby gave it the full treatment and once again JK just nailed it, a nice tribute to older times. Cold Rain and Snow was a surprise and very strong, a crowd pleaser, once again John was impressive. Cosmic Charlie was a perfect closer and one that I really wanted to hear. All in all a very strong set, much better than it looks on paper.
Ran into a few more old friends during the break, made the obligatory bathroom run, and back to my seats to discover that a couple of friends who were sitting two rows in front of us but dead center decided to spend the second set on the lawn. The folks they were sitting with, including one of my best friends, told us to come down and take their seats so I ended up dead center two rows up from the railing for the second set, literally one of the best seats in the house. My wife decided to stay up in our original seats for the dancing room but I could look over my right shoulder and see her so we still had contact for the set. Things were looking good.
Sailor/Saint is another combo I got tired of back in the early 80’s (it showed up much too often back then for me) and I had just seen them open the second set in CT with it a few months ago so I wasn’t thrilled to hear those opening notes. But by this point I knew it was one of those nights where the execution was making up for what could be seen as a lackluster set list, and sure enough they pulled off a fantastic version. There are a few songs that this band does a better job on than the Dead and these two certainly (especially Sailor) fit into that category. I was thrilled to hear a second set Bird Song but I thought the version in CT was more interesting. Still, no complaints, I’ll always take a song that opens up and the transition into Help on the Way was great. I hear this one too much as well but how can you complain about that? Very strong Slipknot, everyone was firing on all cylinders, and the Passenger just exploded out of nowhere, huge surprise, it took me a few seconds to regain my bearings and figure out where we were. The Franklin’s was expected but extremely high energy, great stuff. So Many Roads was note perfect, John killed it, and I was happy to see this almost 17 years to the day since the last show. Very well done, and while I never want to hear Throwing Stones by this point I was taking whatever they served up. I think most people expected an obligatory NFA ending but I was glad that they stopped where they did as I was anxious to make an early night of it with the long drive home. Got back up to my wife before the encore and we heading out as they tore that old building down. Rolled into the driveway at 12:01 after an uneventful drive home.
This was one of those shows where you could never guess at how good it was from the set list. They had the perfect groove going from Candyman on, one of those performances where you can feel every beat and every note. Smooth as silk. I can’t say that it was the best Furthur show I’ve seen (7/11/10 holds that for me) but it was certainly up there and as far as the whole experience goes (seats, sound, crowd, etc.) it was fantastic. They got the sound dialed in fast and held it all night, everyone sounded spectacular and played great. I like watching the interaction of the band and our seats, especially in the second set, really were just about the best in the house for that. Phil simply continues to amaze, there are times where it is impossible to believe that this is a 72 year old man 14 years after a liver transplant. Bobby was as strong as I’ve seen him with this band, Jeff has been a monster for the past few years, and John (whose new rig sounds great) has stepped up in a big way. I didn’t really take notice of Russo all night, but that’s just because my attention tends to go to the guitar players. A very impressive BAND in every sense of the word. With the rumors of no more big tours who knows when I’ll get a chance to see Phil (who is the reason I go) again, but (excepting a few songs I could have done without) this night could not have gone better.
Nice review Tom. I enjoyed the first set but found the 2nd set sadly lacking after Philly
Thanks Keith. If they played as well in Philly as they did at Merriweather I can see that, it was certainly a more adventurous set list. I had a chance at 12:30 pm on Saturday for a seat in Center Orch. A Row Q (about 23rd row in front of Phil) but I couldn't pull the trigger on it as I had already decided to do other things and really didn't want to deal with the heat. In a way I'm glad I saved myself for Sunday because I had a great time and felt wonderful but from the reports of Saturday I missed a good one. And I always enjoy running into you.
Any chance that you're seeing Kimock in Philly on August 5th?
A great recording of this show:
