Going to see my morning jacket at forecastle then back to couch tour until All Good!! Have fun kids
Is tonight the dew????? Or do they save this gem for sunday? Always used to say never miss a Sunday show.
So, I'm sitting at Laguardia right now, realising there's a show tonight nearby, and trying to remember why I'm flying to Buffalo and then driving to Binghamton tonight and proceeding to Bethel tomorrow?
Bad planning on my part (although the travel plans do necessitate me flying out of Buffalo next week - must have been something to do with that).
Woody Guthrie's 100th birthday!
Any word on the sound check?
Queen b & co. checking in. It's a beautiful night here on coney isle. Enjoy everyone.
Taperrob's stream is live.

Mountain Song >
Dear Mr. Fantasy
Fantasize!
make us happy.
New Furthur song debuted! The Mountain SongCampfire to campfire or porch to porch, many folk songs have been passed down orally from older generations to younger ones. As they get passed down, the songs change with each new performer, and ownership of that song dissolves from a singular into a collective.
‘The Mountain Song’, as played by Furthur, is a great example of this tradition. It began, as far as I know, on the outtakes of David Crosby’s If I Could Only Remember My Name, which featured a song called ‘Mountain Jam’*. It was a simple, repetitive song stretching eight or nine minutes, with only one repeated lyric (‘Gonna make the mountains be my home…’). Even so, the progression, melody and the passion of the musicians on the album made the song so hauntingly beautiful that it stuck with me from the first time that I heard it.
I play in a band called Blue Light River, a group for which I write the songs. My good friend and bass player, Scott Harvey, one day suggested that I find an old Dylan bootleg and write another ‘Wagon Wheel’. (For those that don’t know, Old Crow Medicine Show’s massively popular ‘Wagon Wheel’ is only half written by them: the chorus is actually a Bob Dylan song called ‘Rock Me Mama’ that can be found on the Genuine Bootleg Series Vol. 1, Disc 2). The idea stewed in my brain for a couple of weeks, until one day ‘Mountain Jam’ came up on shuffle on my iPod. I immediately set to work, and soon the Blue Light River song ‘Mountain Town’ was born. Using David Crosby's refrain as a chorus I wrote three verses and just like that, another incarnation of the song was born. It was a song that strongly represented the folk tradition; it used the original music to create something new that simultaneously respects and builds on that original.
It was that same tradition that created the song that Furthur plays, ‘The Mountain Song’. After hearing Blue Light River’s song, my mom, Jill, did some research and found lyrics written by Robert Hunter that were meant to be added to David's original composition. Seeing the potential, she brought them to my dad, Phil, and me, and together we came up with a third incarnation of the song. Using David's chorus, my arrangement and music for the verses and Hunter’s lyrics, we built a new song that pays homage to and builds upon my song, which in turn was built upon the original.
I’m guessing that the journey for this particular tune is far from over. Just because Furthur plays the song one way and Blue Light River plays it another doesn’t mean that there can’t or shouldn’t be a fourth or fifth incarnation of the song. Music isn’t meant to be inert, it is meant to grow and change. That is why ‘The Mountain Song’ is so special, because it is the product of at least seven different musicians that has developed for over 40 odd years.
-Brian Lesh
* The song was originally created collaboratively, as part of an ongoing cluster jam involving members of Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, all of whom happened to have been recording at Wally Heider studios in San Francisco at the time (1970). The results came to be known as the P.E.R.R.O. (Planet Earth Rock n' Roll Orchestra) sessions, and one of the participants, Paul Kantner of the Airplane, later released an album of that name, which included a version of "Mountain Song " with Paul's lyrics.
Mountain Song
Walkin' in the Mountains - D.Crosby
I went walkin' out last summer
Tryin' to find a breath of air
I went walkin' on the mountain
A friend had told me I'd find you there
Mountain Town - D.Crosby/J.Garcia/B.Lesh/R.Hunter
Built a fortress on a hill
I built a castle in the sky
I built a lean-to in the village down below
A fountain where the land was dead and dry
I built a palace overlooking seven seas
I built a church upon a stone
Gonna let my pastures go to seed
And let the mountain be my home
Gonna make the mountains be my home
('Cause the sky above me is gold)
Gonna make the mountains be my home
(The river is dark ...)
Gonna free my soul to roam
(The river is dark ... down to the sea)
Gonna make the mountains be my home
('Cause the sky above is gold)
A monument of marble raised
Against the day I die
And on the capstone just one word
And that one word is "why?"
Gonna leave my dusty bones
By the path on which they fall
Halfway up some mountain trail
Where the timberline stands tall
Gonna let the mountains be my home
(I'm going to move)
Gonna let the mountains be my home
(I want to breathe)
Gonna free my soul to roam
(I'm going to move on)
Gonna make the mountains be my home
(I think I put on my saddle and ride)
I hear the golden eagle's
Disappearing cry
Wings of beaten lightning flash
From skies beyond the sky.
God writes testament in stars
Believe no word you read
Until you see what action
Has been mothered by the deed
The mountain makes no promises
A thing I understand
Rather look down from the height
Than up here from the land
Gonna let the mountains be my home
(Such a long time)
Gonna let the mountains be my home
(I want to breathe)
Gonna free my soul to roam
(I'm gonna move mountains)
Gonna make the mountains be my home
(I'm gonna move)
Gonna make the mountains be my home
Just got to breathe...

The Eclipse seemed kind of out of place to me, but yeah, this one pretty well ripped from start to finish.

what a second set! this has been. One of the better if not one of the best second sets I have heard from furthur.
Top Notch stuff tonight, great song selection. But the jamming was incredible every tune was played to perfection with inspiring reaching jams. No noodling or waiting around. Just great intense thoughtful smart and seasoned jamming from all members regardless of there natural ages.
Really one of the best second sets I have heard in awhile. I would say this tour for sure?

ABSOLUTELY PURE VINTAGE DEAD - BOTH NIGHTS AT MCU PARK.
great fun in coney island again tonight...more crowded than last night
Great show !!!!
Stellar second set - lack of screens and sidestacks meant you had to move more center to hear well and front and center for decent volume and view - the show could have been MUCH LOUDER without being too loud at all and enhanced most of the audiences experience.
That said - if not very surprising and pretty straight ahead DEAD - not a lot of risk taking - still a very fine show with a second set that IMVHO Jerry would be pleased with.
Excellent representation of the modern dead incarnation. ohh and ...

Enjoying a replay of TR's second set stream on some decent equipment. Am I imagining a Moondance tease towards the end of that terrific jazzy jam leading into Cryptical?
Jerry was smilin' last night!!
Good morning Zoners.
I will describe this shoe as a tale of two shows.
We were about 20 ft from center stage for the 1st set and I have to tell you this was one of the best first sets I have seen Futhur play.
When Phil came out before show to test his equipemnt he was enthusiasitically received, at first he politely ignored us but when he came out a second time and played a few notes and after he finsihed he turned around and flashed a bog ole Phil Lesh grin.
It was a very auspicious begining in a place called Brooklyn. When the rest of the band came out they were all smiling and feeling the love and they just exploded into Shakedown Street.
It was wild and John was unleashed big time. With this gold guitar he had he just let it loose.
The rest of the band was right there and the crowd up front was way into it.
Joe was a monster, he must be gearing up for his PL&F gig next Friday, at one point in the jam he just laid down this fill that was sick.
The Allgator was great and they jammed into a super fun Good Lovin'.John just was dominating the music, it was perfect. They started it old school and then fired it up circa 1982 with that faster tempo and Bobby was just dialed in. Easily one of the best versions I have heard them play.
The love was pouring on Bobby and the band was brimming with smiles and confident nods after they finished this one.
I am not sure if Masterpiece was a break out but it was picture perfect Bobby and the band just gave Dylan the justice that he deserves.
Jeff was on the baby grand and offered up a sweet solo which John built off of nicely.
At the end they all nodded in agreement that Bobby nailed it big time. Phil flashed a big ole grin and we started shout outs to Bobby and he just look up affectionalyy in acknowledgement to us.
Then Phil just pulls the Mountain Song right out of thin air and he was just so into it and the band just soared on it. Phil's playing was amazing during this version, I mean you felt like the band was already deep into the second set this entire set and then a a nice jam into a KILLER Dear Mr. Fantasy. I mean this song I think gets over played by this band so when I see it in the second set I am alittle bummed but on this night it was one of the best songs of the entire show. John just completely unleased during this one.
For all who witnessed this it was one of those moments that was perfect. John is just tearing it up and he is almost finished with his big ripping solo and looks over at Phil for the green light to just keep it going and Phil just flashes this big ole smile the like "what the fuck are you asking me?" and John smiles back and steps back and turns to Jeff and just explodes.
It was wild.
Then a barn burning Sugar Magnolia to end this perfect set.
The SSDD was off the hook.
The crowd was stoked and rightly so
Set two was not nearly up to the same level of intensity as the first was and this was namely due to John. He was just like completely in a different place and was not nearly attacking and driving the music like he was in the first set
I could not believe it.
I mean the band was right there and granted this set looks sick on paper. On second listen it will come across as meandering and flat at numerous points.
I was happy to hear Cryptical again and it was good but the spark was not there and then to have to see another understated and passionless Other One, just like in Pawtucket, was a bummer.
I mean if you just listen to the one from last November in Albany you will now what I am talking about.
When they went into St. Stephen it was clear what they were doing which was very cool and they continued to go old school but to me this seond set did not get back on track until New Potato Caboose.
The jam out of this was excellent and they should have gone into Cumberland instead. I mean this set was starting to look very similar to the Mann from a week earlier but that Caution is incredible.
This one was ok and again John was not driving the bus. The ending picked up but it was another oppurntunity lost.
The Eclipse was the biggest surprise and was very cool and had some great back up harmonies from Sunshine and Jeff.
The China Doll was poetic but was understated and John and Jeff did shine on this version which received a mixed reaction from the very mellow by now Saturday night crowd.
I am not a fan of late second set PITB it just seems to be out place but this set ending sandwich was the jewel of the second set and a short jam out of PITB lead to a very welcomed and passionate Wheel. It was excellent if not alittle laid back and this flowed into a nice heartwarming and thrilling Rider to close out this last run in NYC of 2012.
Saturday night was not my first choice but hey that is why we keep going back.
See you all at the the Vibes
THey played Anthem!
It could almost have been a '68 'Frisco show.
Ace was on it both nights!
They were just exactly perfect.
XO
I agree with Ted on most parts, particulary the 2nd set. The crowd was ready for a big dance before the acid jams, but the St. Stephen jam, which did have part of the Eleven, was on fire. I really enjoyed John's China Doll...close your eyes and "you know who" is always in the house. I really thought that 2nd set was going to be Bethel. It will be interesting what shows up tonight !! Enjoy Brothers and Sisters...until next time !!
Nod to Woody?
I Know You Rider? (Traditional)
need help how do i get to hear live streamin for bethel show tonite
Ted,
Nice meeting you at the show between the setbreaks. I had a lot of fun both nights, but the playing was indeed better on night 1.
I just completely disagree with you about the cause of set II's challenges on 7/14. It didn't have jack to do with John. Bobby was a clumsy oaf and fouled up the flow several times. In the transition from Cryptical into the Other One Phil's body language said it all. He was just standing there with his left arm hanging, shaking his head, looking at John as if to say "how the heck are we going to reclaim the momentum Bobby just killed so we can explode into the Other One??!!??" They worked on it for a while and did the best they could, but it still fell short of it's potential. I think you were about five feet in front of me during this part of the set. Just goes to show how perspectives differ from person to person.
Bobby did a similar flow kill in the jam in St. Stephen. However, the John-led recovery led to an interesting jam, which went into the "Elevenish tease" part of the St. Stephen jam. Actually, if memory serves, I remember thinking that John was actually trying to lead it into a Blue Sky jam. Will need to listen to the recording. This in turn seemed to be cut short by Bobby, before John would have liked, for the conclusion of St. Stephen.
You're right about the Cumberland. They were going into it and it would have been so hot. It was Weir who downshifted and opted for the Caution instead. That's probably what was on the setlist, but instead of going with the flow he went with the setlist. Just my conjecture of course.
There was one other place, might have been the start of BCE...not sure, where Bobby started it before Phil & John were ready.
Things were tight in Philly & on 7/13. I think Bobby just had an off set where he wasn't in tune with John & Phil. No biggie. That's what you get with improv.
On a general note, I find that a lot of Bobby's musical faux pas tend to come when he trys to lead the band and conduct the music with physical gestures. I feel bad for him when this happens. Bobby's a wonderful, talented musician. I just don't feel that he's well suited to leading a band. He may have felt the need to do it by default after Jerry died, but now he doesn't need to anymore. Heavy is the head that wears the crown. I feel like if he would just surrender the musical "leadership responsibilities"...play in the band instead of feeling like he also needs to conduct it, the music would be better and he would make less mistakes.
BTW, to a certain degree, I also feel the same way about this regarding Phil. I think he's less encumbered by it than Bobby, but I believe that he too would play better music if would play more and lead less.
I guess this is the long way of saying "too many cooks in the kitchen." And, not to belabour the metaphor, but in this band, the lead guitarist should be the master chef. Not that he should pick all the songs or anything like that, but the music would be better if Bobby and Phil didn't feel the need to lead.
Disappointingly predictable OMSN Encore. 2nd night of Bobby's 1st set Dylan tune played at a dirgelike tempo. But these are just artistic choices that I would have preferred to have been different. The items mentioned above are more performance related.
Anyway...peace & love & here's to hoping for next year at Coney Island with all my friends, my favorite band, the Cyclone and dipping my tired dancing feet in the ocean after the show.
I'm not sure I want, or that I'm ready for, Phil to play "better". I already feel he holds himself back a lot of the time. And gauging from all the incredible incarnations of PL&F, I find him to be quite a fine, if not extraordinary, band leader. In other words, his big mind and great talent has plenty of room to both play the instrument on the outskirts of greatness AND to lead a band. Nothing suffers.
"the lead guitarist should be the master chef."
And my one remaining complaint about John is that he appears to always defer to Phil and Bobby in this regard. There are times when it seems he could be grabbing the beast by the horns and taking total control but in the end he steps back and let's Phil or Bobby make the call. I know he's in an unusual situation but at this point, if this is a true band, be should be an equal and not have to hold back at all.
And IMO Bobby has always had trouble trusting the flow. He thinks about it a tad too much. Phil does not have this problem.
my favorite show of the tour...lots of phil vocals and basically playing the entire Anthem of the Sun album
